Tucked away in a quiet corner of Kyushu, this unassuming udon shop has become a favorite of mine during my travels. What it lacks in frills and flourishes, it more than makes up for in authenticity and quality.
One of the first things you notice upon entering is the shop's traditional decor that give it an undeniably local, time-honored feel. This is clearly a place frequented by the neighborhood regulars, not just tourists, which is always a good sign.
And while the menu may be limited to just a two udon variations (with or without egg), each bowl is a masterpiece. The noodles themselves are perfectly chewy, with just the right amount of bite, and the dashi-based broth is rich and flavorful without being overpowering. It's the kind of simple, honest cooking that allows the quality of the ingredients to truly shine.
For all the fabulous meals I enjoyed during my time in Kyushu, this humble udon spot has stuck with me as a highlight. Sometimes the most rewarding dining experiences come from the most unassuming of places - and this is certainly one of them.
