"Zoom out. What’s the big picture here?To kick things off, everyone meets at the "office"—which is actually the back of a bar on Rampart Street, which is the most New Orleans start to a guided tour imaginable. The group had about 20 people, so it felt just small enough to be personal, and just large enough that you needn't worry about being the center of attention. Tell us about your fellow tourees. The group was a mix, and though it was predominantly out-of-towners, everyone seemed pumped to see the cemetery. (Guided tours are now compulsory—it’s the only way to really explore this place.) It’s not a physically challenging tour, but it’s a good couple of hours. How are the guides, then? Our guide was a natural storyteller. She brought the history and high points of the cemetery to life (pun very much intended) and put things within the context of the city's history as well. Talk about engaging. Anything you’ll be remembering weeks or months or years from now?Everyone wants to see the tombs of local legends (like Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau). But it's the decoration on the stonework, the above-ground peculiarities that will stick with you. So, who will enjoy this tour most? Some people just love cemetery tours, but this is also great for visitors who want to feel spooked while learning local history." - Paul Oswell
