"On the Upper West Side, I found an outpost of the creative, nontraditional omakase from chef Don Pham of Sushi Ishikawa that pulls from his UES original and is known for offering omakase priced below $200 and for past over-the-top touches like nigiri topped with gold flakes. The menu is seasonal and offered at two price points—$125 for a 15-course menu and $155 for a 16-course menu—with an optional five-course sake and wine pairing for $55; current dishes include bluefin tuna belly topped with black truffle; jumbo shrimp topped with cured roe and foie gras; Japanese milk toast with uni, red caviar, and truffle; and striped jack with a chile vinaigrette, crispy shallots, and Thai basil. The UWS location is half the size of the one across town with only 12 counter seats in a tiny, minimalist space featuring a wooden sushi counter and white and gray marble cabinets, and Pham says he kept it small to ensure guests have the same experience as on the East Side. It opens for dinner starting January 15 and will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 5:30 to 10 p.m." - Tanay Warerkar
