"Set between two desert hills overlooking the Red Sea in South Sinai, this eco-lodge embodies “basata”—simplicity—through regenerative practices dating back to 1986. Owner Sherif El-Ghamrawy and his wife, Maria Würfel, designed it to support the local community while preserving the environment, a stark contrast to the resort town of Sharm El Sheikh 100 miles away, where chain hotels and mass developments have permanently altered the natural landscape along the Red Sea. Guests stay in beach huts and chalets built from locally sourced clay, animal manure, and straw; salinated seawater flushes toilets, and desalinated water for showers and hand washing is reused to irrigate plants so no drop is wasted. To protect the reefs, diving, boating, fishing, and any direct interaction are banned, but guided snorkeling on the coral reefs directly in front of the property is offered; Würfel collects micro algae on each snorkel and helps lead a citizen-science effort to build a comprehensive database of local coral as waters warm. Beyond hospitality, the property runs a school, mosque, and small farm, employs local Bedouins, and serves meals made from produce grown in its own nearby greenhouse; activities include camel riding. Waste is circular: all organic scraps feed animals, while non-organic materials are delivered to their NGO, Hemaya, which collects waste from the surrounding 30 miles to be sorted, shredded, compacted, and packed for proper recycling in Cairo. After nearly 40 years, it remains an oasis to relax and unplug where travelers can be tangibly impactful, often leaving inspired to live a more “basata” lifestyle." - Sophia Li
