"Well, Sapporo East closed in 2013, to be followed a year later in the same space by Beron Beron. It was only slightly fancier, with nearly the same layout and menu, and that place continues to survive today." - Robert Sietsema

Small place with excellent food and great staff. The photos of my food were small plates and I was stuffed. $3 beer WOW!!! I don't know the last time I saw that. You can sit at a table, sushi bar or on the floor. If you are in the mood for Japanese food give this place a try.

Google
I ordered the Chuuka Soba noodles and they made a vegetarian version for me. It was tasty. They took some time to make it, so they offered me free beer for the delay. Japanese Soporo beer is just $3 which is cool too.

Came to this place while wandering around the area, got seated right away. we got the soft shell crab roll as an app and for entree miso butter soup with chicken along with shrimp tempura. The food was so tasty and the server was very quickly and attentive. Will be back for sure! Forgot to take pics though

Google
Such a cozy comfortable ambiance. They are always playing old nostalgic jazz or another great music. The staff is attentive, personable, professional and just stellar. I can’t speak much on their sushi as I mainly stick to a grilled mackerel or smelt ( 5 stars all the way ) and the sunomono ! I crave this constantly Yum! Love their veggie gyoza and house salad also. I’m highly impressed by their sake selection, a glass comes with the perfect traditional pour - overflowing. The best ! Great little spot. My home away from home. ❤️

Google
The service was excellent and they have very cheap beer! The food is solid, I really liked the sushi and the tonkatsu - the karaage wasn’t my favorite but everything was really good and the portions are pretty big! Will definitely come again

Google
Japanese cuisine on 1st Avenue. Wide range of items from curry to sushi. The good: - we ordered the udon tapiyaniki, grilled makeral and salmon tariyaki. - Good flavors. - Fish was grilled very well. The not so good: - Extremely small portions. - Miso soup while tasty, was luke warm. Summary: while the flavor was good, the portions were incredibly small, I have attached both photos of the salmon (20$) and the Makeral (16$). You can view for yourself how small the sizes were at those prices, while we liked the flavors, we will not return due to this.

Google
This restaurant is worth every penny. We saw sushis that we have not seen before such as Fried Oyster Sushi and Fried Scallion Sushi. We ordered them both and both we super fresh and delicious. But we do have to say our favorite one was mostly the salmon Carpaccio with ponzu sauce and sliced jalapeno. Now that sushi was so buttery and that ponzu and jalapeno gave it that extra kick! We didn't stop there, we also ordered their Sushi Delux Platter as well as their YellowTail. Overall, a wonderful dining experience and amazing sushi.

This is our family go-to when we are in the East Village. The food is just incredible and we always feel welcomed here with our 3 young daughters. Also, we love the traditional tables by the windows!

Yelp
I had a nice meal, here. I just came to this place with a friend and we ordered several dishes, which were all good. Seaweed salad: as good as you'd expect. Shishamo: very good. The fish was tender and flavorful. Saba shioyaki: divine. You can't miss this. Ika geso: not for everybody, but I love fried squid tentacles, so it hit the spot. Sunomono: very fresh sashimi. A good way to get a taste of different fish without hitting the wallet too much. Eel avocado roll and salmon avocado roll: both were fine; nothing to write home about, but solid. Overall, it was a satisfying meal in which we tried many options. I wasn't stuffed at the end but felt full. Portions weren't too small and service was reasonably fast (yet not rushed). I'd definitely return.

Danielle D.

Yelp
This place offers affordable meals for the serving size. the tempura udon was gigantic & could be shared between 2 people. The sashimi set was just ok, wouldn't get it again. The service was great & the shop is small but cozy.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere, huge sake menu, kind and helpful staff, amazing sushi!! My partner and I stopped in on our way home, it just happened to be on the way and we were hungry, but was exactly what we needed. Nice place to get the evening started, plenty of bars nearby.

Oona L.

Yelp
This place was AWESOME! 8.50 ramen was the biggest best deal of my life. Service was great, we loved both of our waitresses. Most reasonable bill I've gotten in NYC. It's also so cute and warm inside, loved the seating. Will come again!

Yelp
This was a so-so experience for us. We came in before the dinner rush and were seated promptly. It gets harder and harder to flag down a waiter as it got busier though and we didn't get our waters refilled until we paid (I kind of needed it cause I ordered the wasabi octopus), and it also took forever for us to get the check. The ambiance is nice. The chairs are kind of small and low. There are spaces for you to sit on the ground so the interior was designed to feel very Japanese. The food was just ok. Nothing spectacular. The sushi was kind of cold and the rice was a little too undercooked for my liking. However the fish was pretty fresh and I like how large the sashimi pieces were. I wish the katsu was flavored a bit more, it tasted a little bland. The agedashi tofu was my favorite and the tako wasabi was okay.

Akiko I.

Yelp
Great, solid place in the East Village with Japanese-speaking waitstaff!! I can't believe I've never been here! I used to rely on Sharaku on 9th Street (now gone), and this seems so much better in its authenticity with tatami mats, food prep, atmosphere, and the waitstaff I want to kick myself! I also hope to see them incorporate more vegetarian and vegan items into their menu: They're off to a good start, serving bamboo waribashi (chopsticks). It's the only way for a future for us all.

Sunday P.

Yelp
This is an incredibly cool looking restaurant on the corner of 10th St. and first Avenue. They have five dollar beer specials which were incredibly cool and they bring it to you in a frosted glass.

Sasha C.

Yelp
We were actually in the area to eat something else but there was no seating available so we stumbled into this place for dinner for 3. First when you walk in, the smell reminded me of some old vintage train/railcar. It's dark and yellow which I already was put off by. Not the dark and yellow lighting where you feel upscale, but rather you feel like they're hiding dirty walls and chairs. Upon walking in we were showed our table and it was fairly empty, but granted it was an earlier dinner time ~5:30/6 ish. I looked around and wasn't sure if they provided tap water as I was parched and the wait staff did not bring any. Not after we sat down; not after our orders were placed; not even after the food arrived. I had to ask for iced water and the waiter had the nerve to ask me how many cups I wanted. THREE. one for each of us diners. I am appalled, and its a pet peeve of mine dining in NYC and not even being offered free tap to go with my meal. We ordered wings which were fine, fried lightly but tasteless. and small. then I had the beef gyudon and I was a-ok with the qty although didn't leave full. We also ordered the mackerel over rice which seemed to be enjoyable but who can mess up grilled mackerel...and a udon noodle soup which was bland and sad. I didn't realize I could go into shock after feeling like a second class citizen for asking for free tap, I had to ask for napkins for the table, and even a fork for my child. This was one of those restaurants from the time I walked in and sat down I was already ready to walk back out.

Yelp
Been meaning to come here for a long time since it it looks very cute and authentic on the outside. I love the vibe inside, feels very Japanese minimalist and has options to sit on floor like you would see in japan. Servers were all very friendly. Unfortunately food was mostly average -- the curry katsu was very tendony and chewy and shrimp shumai were a bit bland. The miso soup was however very full of umami and quite tasty.

Ruby P.

Yelp
My fave sushi place in New York. The food is always as fresh as can be, the portions perfect, the marriage of flavors incredible, and I love our slightly off server who is always there. Whenever we have friends out for a special event, we go here need I say more? Oh, and the bathrooms are great!!!

Claire L.

Yelp
I really like the udon here, I think it's better than Raku. I have come here for the Niku udon twice now. The broth is very flavorful, the udon is the perfect texture, and the beef is fresh and tender. My friend got the katsu curry and it was just so-so. I've also tried the sashimi here and it's also just so-so. But five stars for the udon, and the ambience! They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Come try the udon!!

Richard D.

Yelp
Good place for sushi and drinks. We wanted to hit up one of the nearby ayce places but they were all packed and cash only. We stumbled upon here and decided to just go for it. The cost ended up being about the same since we got a bottle of sake and ate our fill. We didn't stuff ourselves but we left satiated and happy. Good service and good sushi.

Jatin A.

Yelp
Beron Beron lured us into its premises with the nice lights outside (and also because it was raining and we were on the way home). We were seated indoors, and we chose the more traditional on the floor experience, which was new for me. The service was all right. The food, on the other hand, was good but nothing to write home about. The spicy tuna roll comes with 6 pieces, and got the job done, although I can't help but want for those two extra pieces (is it that customary to serve 6 regular sized sushi pieces?). I thought the chicken Katsu Curry was delicious, although Rozena found the curry to be ordinary, with the Japanese style lacking (chicken Katsu has a specific look to it). The beef teriyaki was a bit disappointing, and felt rare/medium rare, even though I ordered medium. It was a bit disappointing -- maybe it wasn't their night, and I'd have to check in sometime again.

Cyrus A.

Yelp
Solid, no frills neighborhood spot! The food is always delicious - sushi tastes fresh, and different hot dishes have consistently hit the spot. For the sushi in particular, I think it's a steal, with lots of well made rolls coming in at under $10. This place has become my go-to option for when I'm feeling like Japanese food, but don't want to spend a ton or wait an hour for a table. For anyone on a budget, I'd say this is one of the better deals in Manhattan!

Robert B.

Yelp
They were playing Hip Hop music loud and some of the songs had curse words. When asked if they could change the music to something calmer, they refused. They did however lower the volume slightly. As there were customers with children I don't think this was appropriate music for a restaurant. And they were not accommodating.

Renata G.

Yelp
I placed an order to-go through Yelp. When I went to pick it up, I thought the restaurant looked charming with cool decor. I didn't have to wait long, grabbed my chirashi bowl and a side salad and went to the park to enjoy it. The fish was subpar, it really wasn't the best quality. And the salad was the most basic you can imagine. The meal filled me up but I didn't enjoy it.

Dom G.

Yelp
Walked past here on my way home on a nice sunny day. The special sign - Draft Asahi for $5 and cans for $3 caught my attention. I decided to sit down and give this place a try. I ordered some appetizers to share - gyoza and fried octopus. My favourite out of the two would be the gyoza. The octopus was a little bit on the oily side but it is fried after all. I also ordered an udon bowl which came with a variety of tempuras. These were also nice. The beers were reasonably priced so I stayed for a couple. I sat outside and soaked in the sun whilst enjoying my food and drink. Life is good.

Yelp
Fun yummy sushi spot in the east village. Restaurant is cute and pretty quiet which is pretty nice. Sushi was really good, especially the Manhattan roll! 10/10 choice and I loved the spicy tuna so much I got a second order. My friend really enjoyed her udon! Service was very friendly and helpful. Great spot!

Megan S.

Yelp
Quality ingredients and warm, soft rice made the sushi feel like a great value. Ordered delivery after having an excellent dine-in experience a few nights ago. This will definitely be my go-to neighborhood sushi spot going forward. That said - I ordered the saiko yaki at the restaurant the other night and unknowingly consumed a tiny bone. The bone is still stuck in my throat several days later and I'm considering going to urgent care if it is still there at end of week. :) It was delicious tho so I'd do it again

Jenn T.

Yelp
We were in the neighborhood during storm outside and decided to stop in. We were seated right away and requested to sit on the floor for the experience! I have never done that before and loved it. We ordered a sake and a couple of items. The ambiance was perfect with the dim lighting and decor. And whoever's playlist was playing that night... just amazing! The staff here was really attentive and the food was great. And the coolest thing was the bidets in the washrooms! So don't forget to check it out before you leave. If I could recreate the whole experience I had at Beron Beron again I totally would.

Yelp
Delicious, generous eel sushi. It hit the spot. A small, authentic Japanese restaurant. It's on my return list

Yelp
Our old date night spot back then still here. Beautifully updated. Put favorite is still the fried asparagus rolls.

Izzy L.

Yelp
One of the less expensive meals we got in nyc and we were super content. The appetizer's came out right away and the restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere. The waitstaff was super sweet and definitely made the experience enjoyable!

Emi B.

Yelp
Uhmmmm a lot of similar type of izakaya restaurant in the area. Beron Beron was okay..

Lyn N.

Yelp
Friendly service and tasty food. The Niku udon broth was favorful and perfectly hot. However, I gave 3 stars because of these - some of the sushi pieces were quite dry and one of the servers brought our ikageso out so aggressively that half of them fell onto the table and she swore. I'd go back to try other dishes and hopefully with better experience & update this review.

Victor L.

Yelp
The ambiance of this place is really cool, especially if you can get seating on the tatami mats. Best to come here with a group as they have good sharable plates and a nice drink menu. The bathrooms have Toto washlets, which is a bonus. The food here is just okay. The nabeyaki udon broth was too salty and the beef teriyaki didnt have enough flavor, both were too expensive for the quality. I liked the ika geso and the raw marinated wasabi, those were reasonably priced. Id recommend this place for the decor and casual dining experience.

Lindsey J.

Yelp
Ok I must say I am usually very very kind on the star scale here on Yelp but there were some totally ridiculous things that happened here. I'll start with the good - cute interior including those tiny tables where you take off your shoes and sit criss-cross applesauce. My friend also ordered sake which they brought on ice in a Japanese style bucket. Like Vegas style HA! Love cute details. Miso was good, my rainbow roll was standard. Here's where things got weird- I wanted the sashimi platter (which is what I ALWAYS order from sushi restaurants), and kindly requested the substitute the white fish for something else. The platter then comes out with TEN pieces of salmon and two tuna.... I was like wait what??? Why would anyone order a sashimi platter if they wanted a huge plate of salmon with some tuna on the side?! I then kindly requested they replace at least two of the salmon with, say, yellowtail. Nope because MP is higher, yet on the alacarte menu it's the same price. Ok that makes no sense but fine. I ask which specialty rolls I can add cream cheese to... "none". Uhhh not true, this isn't my first time eating sushi LOL. I order a rainbow roll and they bring it out with little cubes of cream cheese on each roll. Thanks for trying. My friend ordered the chicken and said it not only looked weird but tasted weird. I'm thinking ok it can't be that bad... she doesn't touch it and then proceeds to PROJECTILE VOMIT multiple times the second we leave. Like no joke at all.

David N.

Yelp
Fantastic place for sushi and more! Old Skool feel with a new skool vibe! Amazing service, sushi and appetizers were fabulous. Outstanding customer service, staff are very helpful and energetic. You must try the DRAGON ROLLS yummy yummy ! Couple's friendly

Eitan J.

Yelp
The food was mediocre, the restaurant smelled like a dumpster, and the service was amicable but slow. Hard to recommend the place given the putrid stench and passable food.

George M.

Yelp
Given the location and the number of people inside, I thought this would be a lot better. The sushi was not really good at all and the black cod was nice and fatty but not that good. I don't think that I will return.

Sam K.

Yelp
This was just about the weirdest restaurant experience I've ever had. My friends had been here a couple times prior and had a pretty good time, remembered the food being tasty so we were pretty excited. The first weird thing that happened was when we were being seated one of the chefs walked by and whispered something that we couldn't hear to us. He walked away right after. We looked at the waitress and asked what that was about, she just said, "oh he's so annoying." Like what waitress says that about the chef in front of guests? After being seated outside we ordered some appetizers, gyoza and seaweed salad. Pretty good stuff, then our first entree showed up. A crab avocado roll that my friend and I were splitting. The waitress brought it out with zero soy sauce and walked off before we could request some. I got up and asked her if we could have some for the roll and when she came back she just gave us the full bottle with no small bowls to put it in. Again, she walked away immediately giving us no time to ask for them. We thought, okay whatever, let's just eat the roll. The roll was great until the last piece which had zero avocado, straight wasabi spliced in with the crab. My friend started coughing and dry heaving because of it. It felt intentional, how does a sushi roller put mostly avocado into a roll and then stuff the end of it with wasabi? The waiter came out apologized for it and voided it. But then the light above our table went out and we were in the dark? They were able to get it on a couple minutes later but at this point we were so weirded out by the whole experience. Our entrees were brought to the table and we were excited to eat and get of there. Three of us got curry rice and one got the udon. Food itself was fine but the waiter mixed up one of the orders. We finished, paid and left. Soon after getting back to our apartment we all started feeling pretty awful. Clammy and nauseous. We all felt this way for multiple hours. I don't know what was in the food but we felt ill. I've never felt compelled to leave a review till now. The weird chef whispering to us as we sat down. The waiters seemed to not care much at all about our experience as guests. The sushi spliced with wasabi inside of it. The light going out. And the sickness we all felt after leaving. I used to like this place, but this was the worst restaurant experience I've ever had.

Chloe S.

Yelp
look, i'm a little hungover, i went to yelp to check if beron beron takes reservations, and got caught up mindlessly reading reviews. this place is good - i go here all the time - great interior good food with all the standards at a low price point. yall are such babies though! complaining about like, uncomfortable chairs and a fan blowing too hard on your teriyaki... and i feel like some of you are lying when you say you've eaten sushi before. stop demanding that cream cheese be added to your RAW FISH. please. grow up! anyway yeah i recommend this place it's great

Simon P.

Yelp
Got the katsu curry and a spicy tuna roll for takeout. Great quality for the price. The curry is packed separately with the rice and the katsu to keep the crunch of the katsu and not soaking the rice too much. The curry is typical Japanese curry with some carrot and potato pieces. Exactly right amount of curry so you can finish it with the rice and katsu. The katsu has crunchy skin and flavorful inside. The spicy tuna roll is also well prepared with the right amount of sauce and spiciness. Would love to try dining in next time.

zoe a.

Yelp
if there were a 0 i would add it. i and my friends (8 of us) walked in and was going to eat outside but it smelt like straight sewer, so we went inside. it smelled like actual horse dump i was so overwhelmed with the smell i didn't even want to eat anything. the hand towels were supposed to be warm not cold. the server looked so confused after we left before ordering. isn't sushi supposed to smell fresh? might have gotten food poisoning!! i don't recommend this place

Gus H.

Yelp
Excellent beef in the Udon. And the deep fried squid tentacles was a perfect side. Definitely will be coming back.

Farah K.

Yelp
This place is located at the corner of 10th Street and 1st Avenue. It has an expanded list of items to choose from its lengthy 7 pages menu. The layout is quite unique inside with raised booths, cool light fixtures, a small sushi bar but a longer counter to sit at, and some chairs and tables, as well as mats to sit on, Japanese style :) Food was mediocre; service could've been better; ambience was relaxing. Not a place to visit more than once.

Jonathan T.

Yelp
Terrible service, terrible food. Waitress made us with a group of 6 that we had to order this sushi deluxe for $27 because we couldn't order the special sushi rolls that come in one piece each. So, when I asked the waitress why can we order the sushi deluxe that comes with 9 pieces but we can't order 4 pieces of unagi eel sushi? She couldn't answer me but kept insisting we had to buy the deluxe. So, okay we went and got the deluxe and when it came out, they had one piece of unagi eel roll ( eel piece on top of rice , sushi ) on the plate. I was appalled when the plate came I took the piece and put it on my small plate and went up to the sushi bar and asked the chef to make me 6 pieces , he didn't even hesitate to make me it. And on top of all the terrible service here, the sashimi salmon we ordered was all terrible.. the salmon lost color it was overall not fresh at all.. I don't recommend anyone to come.

Henry T.

Yelp
I guess this place will suffice if you're ever in the East Village area and craving inexpensive Japanese food. Honestly, their menu was an eyesore to look at and they should definitely have it redesigned. After spending about 10-15 minutes looking through the menu, I had their pork katsu since I heard good things about their curry. My party and I also split an order of spicy tuna and shrimp sushi rolls. I thought my pork katsu dish was overly dry and somewhat bland. Sitting in front of their Dyson fan really didn't help with the dryness of the meat. The sauce that they provided definitely helped with the blandness, but I can only add so much on the cutlets before it becomes way too salty. The sushi rolls were pretty standard and there was really nothing much to brag about. The staff were accommodating and catered to our needs. They also offer tatami floor seating here if you're a fan of that. I haven't tried their other offerings here, but I'd shy away from the katsu curry dishes. Brownie points for them for providing warm towels for cleaning our hands before dining.

Yelp
Beron Beron NY Manhattan East Village 6pm Friday 21st April 2017 Five Stars This is a great japanese restaurant with affordable prices. There is floor seating, sushi bar, or four top tables. It's not easy to combine them so I wouldn't bring a big group here. We both ordered the custom bento box. Tiff had sashimi, sweet potato tempura, age Tofu, miso soup, seaweed salad, white rice plus botan Ebi and eel and a green tea. I had sushi, chicken thigh teriyaki, fried chicken lollipop, hijiki, and miso soup plus a Sapporo. Everything was delicious. The chicken thigh had a nice sear. The frenched chicken drumette was deep fried to a golden color. The burdock root salad had a crisp woody taste. They even had brown rice. Service was on and off but overall a great experience.

Alexander L.

Yelp
Came here for our 2 year anniversary. Girlfriend ordered curry I had the nabeyaki udon. My food was alright, about on par with what I expected from the area. The place itself was really cute and we loved the ambience, but that's where the positives ended. I spent about 5 minutes in the bathroom trying to open the door because it was stuck, and when I came out, it was to weird looks from the staff. My girlfriend had a terrible stomachache that night and we hadn't eaten anything else that day. The wait staff also gave us attitude the whole time. If you want Japanese food literally walk around in a 2 block radius and go anywhere else.

Christine W.

Yelp
I love their karaage lollipop! *** Locals Mostly older couples and families come here as it's slightly pricier. It's authentic Japanese food though made by actual Japanese people. *** Travelers This place is not so crowded so if you want to just sit down and eat and have a great time and great food, come here! East Village has a lot to offer. *** My Recommendation If you want a great deal, definitely get the dinner bento with eel sushi. Best bang for your buck! What makes their bentos unique is the option to get the Karaage lollipops that make it yummy AND fun to eat! IG: @foodisseur

Yelp
The food here was soooo good and came out pretty fast. I loved the steaming hot miso soup it was so fire! Deff recommend 4 the munchies and dinner in general :)

Anisa A.

Yelp
Loved it all! And I think kotatsu tables? Great rolls - just what you need. Lovely outdoor seating as well as inside.

andromeda f.

Yelp
love this place so much. fresh, homestyle japanese food served by cool waitstaff. lovely interior, pleasant music, spotless tables. try the black miso cod, nabeyaki udon, or chirashi. you won't be disappointed.

Emmie C.

Yelp
This is a good find! Reasonable price and lots of stuffs on the menu. My favorite thing about this restaurant is the 4 tables on the side, where patrons take off their shoes and sit on the cushions. The waiters don't rush you to leave and you can sit there chatting with your friends for a long time. Their toilets are also the Japanese ones with buttons to warm the seat and water to squirt your rear.

Jeff B.

Yelp
I haven't been here in quite a while, and I seem to remember the food being better. My wife and I agreed that it was basically just ok, and for the price, you can get better. That being said, for one thing maybe we somehow caught them on an off night? Also, just simply great decor and excellent, friendly and attentive service.

Kristia B.

Yelp
It's not everyday that i get to embrace Japanese culture by choosing their traditional style of dining while seated on the floor with shoes off (regular tables and chairs are available). I even tried chopsticks, but still haven't gotten the hang of it and eventually asked for regular utensils. The ambiance is very relaxed, especially with the low lighting and music. Conversations amongst the diners were also at a minimum, which I truly appreciate. Our server and the kitchen moved quickly - delivering our water, sake, appetizers, then entrees. Our dining experience moved like clockwork. We were in and out in under an hour. I ordered the chicken teriyaki (boneless chicken - white and dark meat with teriyaki sauce paired with a small salad and brown rice) for $16. There was nothing spectacular about the meal except for the crispy fried chicken roll, which was something I had never tried before and thought was delicious. On another note, the toilet was something to see - so many buttons and features. Wow! I'm just glad that the flush button is still placed on top. It would be awkward if I'd have to ask for help.

Joe B.

Yelp
My wife really loved the fact that you can sit at a low table on the floor. It's very authentic. The food was very good. My favorite was the Ebi Shumai we liked it so much we made a 2nd order. The chicken cutlet was super crispy and juicy in the middle I recommend having the spicy mayo with it. The rolls we had were very good as well. I thought the spicy fried chicken roll would have been breaded like the cutlet but it was different not bad though. Service was great and the food came out rather fast. So if your looking for something different with great Japanese food this is the spot.
