Where to Drink Tiki and Tropical Cocktails in D.C.

"The Capital Hilton travels back in time this summer and transforms its lobby-level Statler Lounge into Trader Vic’s Mai Tai Lounge. Now through Labor Day, the White House-adjacent hotel bar revives the same tiki cocktails and fusion bites served on-site when Trader Vic’s was there from 1961 to 1995 (Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon were known customers). The global Trader Vic’s brand claims rights to the original Mai Tai, created in 1944 by Victor “The Trader” Bergeron. — T.P." - Missy Frederick

Yelp
The food was good, the service was great. The ambiance was pleasant. This restaurant could benefit from a better quality selection from their buffet at the price they ask. Many items seemed like a frozen food from Costco that was heated and placed on the buffet.

Yelp
Looking for a lite lunch nearby and found this place. Located in the Capital Hilton Hotel, North Gate has a very limited menu of breakfast and lunch items. There are no dinner options due to hours of operation. The customer service and quiet atmosphere is what I enjoyed most. I was seated at a corner table with dim sunlight, I ordered the kale salad with salmon. Fresh and simple, hemp seeds, golden raisins/cranberries and a lemon vinaigrette. Not a standout meal on the menu but I enjoyed it

Yelp
Breakfast review. Avocado toast with smoked salmon was awesome. A little pricey but worth it. 4 star all around for this place. Nancy made it a 5 star experience. She has a genuine kindness and friendliness that makes me want to return.

Yelp
Not cheap, but food was delicious and service was excellent. I had avocado toast and it was so loaded I couldn't finish it.

Yelp
Great spot for lunch or dinner considering it's a restaurant in a hotel. My favorite is the Capital 80 l, you can thank me later. The steak was prepared well and the salty fries have it the perfect balance.

Yelp
Here is a menu to view. I just went downstairs to take a photo but have not eaten there yet. I will go later for lunch. Thinking the cubano, tacos or flatbread.

Yelp
Fist things first- the menu on the website is NOT their actual menu. Our options for breakfast were much more limited and much more expensive, unfortunately. To set the stage- avocado toast was $21. I ended up getting an omelette, which cost $25 and came with plain arugula that took up 1/3 of the plate. The servers were friendly, but getting a table took forever and I had to ask for my water to be refilled after several servers walked past. Basically, it's very obviously a hotel restaurant. There are some great brunch and bakery places around so I'd skip this one if you have the option.

Yelp
Stayed at the Capitol Hilton for the Cherry Blossom Kite Festival and had breakfast here as it was rated 4 stars and was located in our hotel so I thought it was meant to be. Service - Our waiter Wan was prompt with service but not clear with options. Ambience - well maintained, nice, clean, floor to ceiling windows. Food - Had free continental breakfast and upgraded to a full breakfast which included options such as waffles, pancakes, eggs Benedict and omelets. I ordered a western omelet and it was made with the same egg product as the regular scrambled eggs not fresh eggs. They did have a great French toast casserole, the basil pineapple was very fresh and would be great for spring or summer events. Coffee, juices, cereal, fruit were standard continental breakfast fare.

Yelp
I had an opportunity to attend a conference at the Capital Hilton Hotel. There was a pre-conference social mixer here. It was a reserved event with an open bar and complimentary hour d'oeuvres. The staff was professional and friendly and the food quality was good.

Yelp
North Gate Grill is beyond your traditional hotel restaurant. Located in the Capital Hilton and open daily, the restaurant is beautifully appointed with lovely decor and a fun view of the K Street chaos. Start with a bowl of the She Crab Soup ($9) -- it's smooth with lots of lump crab. Next, order the Capital Salad ($19.5) -- grilled chicken organic greens, crumbled Vermont goat cheese, tomatoes, pine nuts, dried dates, sundried cranberries, champagne vinaigrette. Legend has it that a Hilton exec loves this salad so much that it's on the menu at all of their premier properties (including both Hiltons in DC). Service here is careful and complete. Drinks are filled, plates are served with care, and the delicious bread basket and garlicky butter never runs short. From someone who has eaten in more hotel restaurants than I'd care to count, the North Gate Grill ranks among the best in the league.

Yelp
We had breakfast here two mornings in a row. Our server Nancy was amazing. She is so sweet, kind, thoughtful, friendly. The food was great but we will be back so to see sweet Nancy. Thank Youuuu

Yelp
first-service. The wait staff was so thoughtful to refill glasses and proactively provide to-go boxes-and so interactive/chatty w/our kids. We tipped accordingly. Christmas brunch was great too. Kale and sweet potato mix-not bad! Bacon, turkey, prime rib (a little overdone but flavorful), waffles, eggs, fruit, French Toast casserole with pineapple run syrup...$10 bottomless mimosas/bloody Marys...Such a good last minute find on Christmas morning. Would like to try the regular menu.

Yelp
I didn't taste the food so didn't think it was fair to give a one star rating. I just couldn't stay after being seated at a worn wooden table, a sinking, uncomfortable booth type bench seat, then turn to see discussing spillage and generally unkempt area.

Yelp
I was at a conference at the Capital Hilton and ended up eating at North Gate by default--didn't have time to go anywhere else. It's a really beautiful restaurant, surprisingly. They do a breakfast buffet, which actually looked really good, but I ended up opting for the veggie frittata. It was great, with tomatoes, grilled onions, goat cheese, herbs, and a huge spear of perfectly steamed asparagus on top. It came with red potatoes, which were meh, compared to everything else, and also a tomatillo salsa. They serve this fantastic strawberry jam with entire strawberries in it. We ended up asking for another dish of it and cleaned that one, too. All of the ingredients seemed like they were very high quality (organic tea, beautiful produce, etc.). I left very impressed!

Yelp
3.5 stars Was staying in the Capital Hilton and ended up here for breakfast and lunch during my stay. For breakfast I had the nutella french toast because I simply couldn't resist. Three disks of eggy bread, with nutella in between each layer, served with powdered sugar, maple syrup and a strawberry garnish. It definitely hit the spot and was amazingly delicious, but the $18 sticker shock had me ruefully shaking my head that yes indeed, I was in a hotel restaurant. For lunch the next day I enjoyed a cedar plank salmon (thought the plank needed a replacing...very worn looking) with a mixed green salad. Salmon was cooked perfectly but the salad left a bit to be desired. Really friendly service, attentive to refilling your water, which I always appreciate. A bit weird though: they were decorated for Christmas in early September. What gives, North Gate? Overall, the food was decent, the service nice and the prices way, way higher than they should be. Would give 3.5 stars if possible.

Yelp
Wonderful service. Food was delicious, but very small portions. The portion of potatoes au gratin was about the size of a diamond cut baklava. The steak, supposedly filet, had some fat like you would find on a sirloin. But, it was still absolutely delicious, and a great experience. Right inside the hotel. Hours are limited, to allow for time to prepare for the next meal. Andrew was so very friendly and helpful with everyone he came in contact with. Lauren, although professional, should smile a little. This is the service industry after all.

Yelp
Wonderful service. We went for breakfast. Our waiter showed us the options at the continental breakfast. When I mentioned that I'd like to simply order one plate of food rather than the buffet, he got me exactly what I wanted and quickly! He also made sure to bring my husband the honey he requested for his hot tea. Great place for breakfast and great service.

Yelp
Good food. A bit overpriced. If you are looking for this type of atmosphere, you can go better in DC. Try Lincoln or Baby Whale!

Yelp
Good place to start your day even if you are not staying at the Capitol Hilton, just blocks from the White House, with good selection of plates and finger foods.

Yelp
Great service very good food - buffet is a bit pricey but when traveling not above the expected norm. Accommodating for GF options. Wait staff is great - as are the omelets. Stayed at Hilton Capital Hill over 4th of July weekend - and note crowded in the least!

Yelp
Staying at hotel and did not want to leave for lunch. Atmosphere was very nice, service was good and staff was attentive. Had the turkey sandwich and friend had crab cake sandwich and both were very good. One downside was for the turkey sandwich, fries and a soda with tip $28 and some change. Good thing I liked everything except the price. Would recommend trying it.

Yelp
A friend of mine stayed at the Capitol Hilton on a recent trip to DC. I was staying with friends in the area, but met the out-of-towner at her hotel to have breakfast at the North Gate Grill. When I say that this friend had recommended this place for breakfast perhaps that means nothing to you - but I know she can be hard to please - so I knew that it meant a lot that she had been there for breakfast earlier in her trip and thought it worth her time and expense to go again. We opted for the breakfast buffet which coast $22. There was so much to choose from, you simply could not go wrong. Omelettes to order with fresh ingredients, fresh baked muffins, cereals, fruit, toast, yogurt, baked aple french toast, cinnamon buns, juices, and it was, of course, all you can eat... which wasn't really necessary for me, but allowed me to try a few things that I would have let be other wise. It was a great start to a long day sight-seeing in the city.
