"Oakland comfort food haven Homestead has launched a spin-off called the Humble Sandwich, the East Bay Express reports. Homestead co-owner Fred Sassen says that it "is not a replacement for Homestead but a new venture that we are planning on continuing after the shelter-in-place is lifted." The SF Chronicle reports that Sassen has intended to open a New York-style deli sandwich spot for years, and that these days of takeout and delivery only provided them the chance to launch the project, which uses deli meats from SF meat purveyor Molinari and Acme bread." - Eve Batey

It was close to my house so I went to get breakfast. Ordered the chicken biscuit n gravy breakfast. Basically a breakfast chicken sandwich. They gave me everythingseparate! The chicken was fried in cornmeal, the biscuit was idk not a biscuit and the gravy was watery. Won't be back and won't recommend.

Google
Simply the bomb, no matter what you get on the menu. Neighborhood staple. Locals only type joint. Pictured is the biscuit sando with chicken apple sausage. The biscuit goes crazy… with some syrup? Game over 🥵 The banana bread is so lite and served warm!!! The chocolate cookies also always hit. Personally a fan of how they actually cook the onions all the way through so that they’re sweet with your potatoes!! It’s all in the details. 10/10 service always. Very rare quality joint. I’ll probably cry the day they close.

Google
A culinary oasis near the Port, reflecting the African-American and Southeast Asian community roots of West Oakland — self-described as “Oakland Cuisine”. Fried Fish Sandwich served perfectly crisp (though light on salt), with Asian slaw and fluffy Kaiser roll. Choice of regular, sweet potato or garlic fries as side. Salad also an option.

Google
Was driving by to an appointment and came back to check the place out. Best decision all day. Greatest service. Locals gave us the scoop on the menu and what to get. It's hard to choose.

Mariana AL

Google
One of the very few food joints in the Lower Bottoms. They are very reasonably priced and their food is consistently good, but a bit on the greasy end. They also struggle to understand very basic English; if you order over the phone you may be uncertain whether you'll get what you ordered or not.

David Borel

Google
The brunch must be great, but the veggies sandwich is a greasy veggie burger on a bun that is definitely not "artisanal". Salad is just shredded lettuce, nobody busses the tables or even changed the batteries in the smoke detector, and it takes a long time to get your food. Otherwise, pretty good.

Matt Emmanuel

Google
The meat they use is the best part, serving sizes are solid, and the prices are fairly cheap (except for the drinks that are a bit expensive). Make sure to ask for extra sauce on the sandwiches though. Personally, I don’t think they put enough by default.

Google
Wow, what a gem. Way better than expected. Lots of pesto, great house mayo, tons of huge good quality fries. The chicken is super juicy. Service was busy, but moving fast. Will definitely return. Thank you!!

Yelp
5/5 experience today at 10th & Wood. Apart from the owner being so welcoming and friendly, the food was very filling and delicious. The orange juice is made fresh which is great! I ordered the fried chicken sandwich, Thai chicken sandwich, and spicy friend chicken sandwich that come with fries which satisfied my taste buds. The choices are plain fries, sweet potato or garlic. Ambiance is cozy. They have indoor and few outdoor seating. Check out this place if you're in town and support the locals!

Rodolfo S.

Yelp
No...........how could this be??? They were just open the other day , turn the corner and seen the for sale sign , I dropped to my knees.......it was just a day like any other, no biscuits n gravy with a Thai tea and banana bread after :( end of an era

Leataata S.

Yelp
I come here often to grab our office lunch and everyone is always satisfied with their food. Not only is the food always good customer service is amazing, he's always so soft spoken and inviting. I always get the fried chicken sandwich with yhe pow pow sauce and it never fails.

Denise D.

Yelp
Could there be crack in this food? I can't explain to you how I crave this, whether I am in the neighborhood or not. The fried chicken, biscuits, and gravy makes my mouth water....and is an instant dopamine boost as soon as that intoxicating aroma hits my nose. It's not complicated, but it's just down right yummy. It helps that I kind of adore the customer service I get when I walk into this spot, too. Friendly. Fast. Reliable. And clearly, it appears to be a neighborhood favorite. I'm willing myself to venture to try something new. The Elvis French Toast gets me salivating, but once I find my one hit wonder, I don't need to venture any further down the menu. But for YELP's sake, I promise I'll try!

Kay B.

Yelp
I've been several times and I definitely would go back. Is nice to still have neighborhood cafes.

Ali A.

Yelp
10th & Wood was part of my fried chicken expedition last week. It's a friendly neighborhood joint in West Oakland, where there is a general lack of food options in the area. Staff was friendly and warm, service was quick. The sandwich wasn't my favorite, but it was still decent. I prefer a juicer piece of chicken and a bit more sauce on my sandwich. The meal was huge, kept me satisfied all day, but the taste wasn't what I was looking for. Review for the sandwich, nor representative of the staff or anything else.

Lonarice W.

Yelp
Ordered a chicken sandwich with avocado and garlic fries? The food came the sandwich was good but it's like they chopped up raw garlic and threw it on top of the fries. Just pure uncooked garlic. This is unacceptable!!

Serina L.

Yelp
Talk about a hole in the wall type of place!! This place has a sense of familiarity when it comes to serving the community through food. The owner San seems to know his local community well and just about everyone that walks through the door. My ultimate recommendation would be the fried chicken and biscuits :))

Aaron B.

Yelp
Food was good and service was quick. Hidden location but good. Price was reasonable too.

Leila R.

Yelp
This was our go to chicken sandwich restaurant for years. Wow the quality has declined and the service horrible. Chicken tough and French fries were literally cold inside... as in still frozen. When i told the young kid at the register ( and had him feel the fries) he said 'yes cold' but did nothing. Not even an apology. Did the owners change....we loved this place for years and came weekly ( and recommended to many). Very sad to see such a decline.

Christy C.

Yelp
A gem in a food dessert neighborhood. Run by a really sweet couple and service is super attentive. My favorites are the biscuit sandwich and the Elvis French toast. I have often run into them being closed during their posted hours which is frustrating but I'm hoping that it's just them transitioning out of Covid. A little more TLC is needed in their restaurant but there is heart in the food and service. Love supporting the local neighborhood too!

Eddie A.

Yelp
This is a great friendly neighborhood brunch spot and San really cares about his customers. I've been coming here for over 7 years and the food is always good. I usually get the Power Chicken Sandwich or the Woody with sweet potato fries.

Jason L.

Yelp
Thank you for the excellent breakfast. Efficient, tasty, and incredibly priced. The potatoes were perfectly prepared. Quality sizzling bacon Walked out the door with $10 platter. This place is the new go to for me in West Oakland

Sofy Y.

Yelp
Another go to lunch spot near my job. I love that there are still good places around west oakland and that the food scene in this small part of the city has not been gentrified yet. They give you HELLA generous portions here! Both times I literally ate til I was stuffed and I normally don't do that, but I just couldn't stop. Their food is so good, that even the fries tasted good cold. I'm not super into grilled chicken (as it feels like a hit or more often miss for me) but the grilled chicken sandwhich I got the first time here was so perfectly seasoned and grilled and was hella juicy. The sandwhich fillings were your standard sandwich fare, but if you do it right ofc the most simple things will be the best. Fries slap like I said. Second time I got the patty melt, I'm a sucker for a burger and for rye bread. The patty was big and juicy, and the rye bread was good too. IDK what to say, just hella good and hella affordable. Great place for take out!!

Vuyelwa W.

Yelp
Lunchtime - this is a hidden gem in west Oakland ! Great for lunch and really close to Jack London Square! We ordered and food was ready within 15 minutes! All our sandwiches and salads were ON POINT!! Highly recommended!

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Great place. First time here and absolutely loved it. Will be back!!!! I always work so I never get a chance to stop by. Very delicious food

Patricia G.

Yelp
Omg this is our favorite place to go. The chicken sandwich is to die for. I highly recommend this place. The owner is such a wonderful person.

Art V.

Yelp
I don't often leave reviews...but I gotta say this place has two beautiful things that need immediate recognition. 1. The staff. The folks that work at this cafe are exceptionally warm and kind hearted. They are always polite, respectful and an overall joy to interact with. 2. The Banana Bread. If you find yourself lucky enough to be around when it is available (generally between 11AM - 1PM) it is absolutely divine. In my 54 years on this planet, never have i had a banana bread -- be it store bought, home made, or from a cafe, that come anywhere close to the decadence, density or texture that this particular treat contains. I would even recommend making a point to travel here, from anywhere within a 50 mile radius, just to try it. It's that good! Anyhow, I hope this is helpful for anyone thinking about stopping by 10th and wood.

Jim G.

Yelp
This place has a fore chicken sandwich during lunch. You'll notice this place is one of the only restaurants in the area. If you're in the area and want something pretty quick then go here. They aerve a bunch of other items but it looks like the fried chicken sandwich is the way to go here. The froes are great too, not that you can ever go wrong with fries potatoes. Service is great too. They're nice and welcoming. Overall I'd recommend this place for a bomb fried chicken sandwhich!

Joshua D.

Yelp
Great functional neighborhood breakfast and lunch spot. Really friendly and courteous owners who make an effort to remember everyone's name. Reasonable prices and fast service.

Junior T.

Yelp
I go here all the time as it's right around the corner. I'ts a small "whole in the wall" spot and the food is amazing. The only downside is they don't always honor their listed hours. I've gone a couple times in the morning during operating hours, and they weren't even open with no signage. So just make sure you call ahead and save yourself a trip. The woody and the power sandwich are my favorites.

Mac B.

Yelp
Service was great, menu/kitchen is accommodating, food was delicious and cost is normal/low for the East Bay! I love this spot.

Tom D.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches, drinks etc. and fast friendly service at this place. Definitely recommend it.

John B.

Yelp
Here's a unique spot to try. If you're looking for a fancy brunch place, this ain't it. If you seek authentic scrambled eggs, flavorful French toast and fresh-squeezed oj, you've found a diamond in the rough. Enter, wait briefly in line, approach the front counter and be prepared to be greeted by one of the most jovial men you'll ever meet. Order, pay and stand agape at your budget-friendly bill. As you enjoy your meal, embrace the mystery of how such high-quality food can be had at such an economical price in this day and age. You'll likely do what I did. After my meal, I walked back up to the counter and put a few additional dollars into the tip jar.

Richard D.

Yelp
First timer and absolute recommend food was fresh cooked in a timely manner, the owner even went out his way while helping others to ask if our food was ok. Definitely wasn't expected nor needed but he did and really appreciated that

Rachel G.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and fries! Great service too. Highly recommend. Ambience is fine but we usually take our food to go.

Darryl C.

Yelp
I drove past this restaurant, didn't think much of it, a real hole in the wall, but then someone later recommended checking it out for breakfast. I ordered the Elvis French toast which was tempura coated French toast stuffed with bananas and Nutella, it was hellla good. The side order of egg whites and potatoes was decent but I would mainly come back for the Elvis French toast. The cashier who also served was kind and attentive even though it seemed like he was running around doing everything. Check it out!

Karina E.

Yelp
I love it here! The food is so bomb! The coffee is also bomb! And the people who own 10th and wood are so nice

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
West Oakland gem. Food is consistently delicious. I have to warn you, do NOT try the freshly made daily peanut butter cookies. I did. I am not generally a peanut butter cookie seeker. These are pretty addicting. I often come just to grab two cookies. One for now and one for later. Great service. I'd say the only time I've been disappointed is after covid hours were not very consistent. Well not open enough for me I should say!!

Sonia B.

Yelp
Super kind employees, fast and fresh food, good vibes with outdoor seating and cool inside decore! Portions are perfect and make you feel perfectly full and content! Fav local restaurant to go too!!

Anastasia Y.

Yelp
This place is a neighborhood favorite. I've been coming here for 7 years and have brought family and friends here when they're in the neighborhood. During the pandemic when I wfh, I even came once a week. I think I've tried their entire menu and now the fried chicken sandwich is my go-to. Also, the owner San is the best! Because it's a family run business, sometimes there are unexpected closures, make sure you call ahead before heading there!

Sitha S.

Yelp
Love this little mom and pop shop in middle of a neighborhood. I normally just get the 10th and wood breakfast. But everything here is so good imo. Staff is very courteous and friendly.

Sigrid W.

Yelp
I found this place here on yelp when looking for a conveniently located breakfast spot on the way to San Francisco for the Giants game on Sunday. This cafe was a great surprise. It seemed like the best kept local secret in West Oakland. Delicious food, good prices, interesting location, wonderful service! After we ordered and went to move one of the two tables outside into a shady spot next to the building, my son commented that I always find places that are off the beaten path and just right for us!

Mira C.

Yelp
This place is a go-to local spot! Definitely a great place to for a reasonably priced filling lunch! Would recommend asking for extra sauce on the side for the sandwiches

Matthew P.

Yelp
There is no other restaurant in Oakland that will leave you this satisfied. You fill your belly with deliciousness without emptying your pockets. Anything with their fried chicken is a winner. If they offer the gravy with it, dive in! Crispy potatoes on the side are a hit. Amazing customer service. Banana bread and Vietnamese iced coffee? Yes please!

Erik B.

Yelp
A wonderful spot. The man be hind the front counter is super friendly and the food is very good. Their breakfast sandwich (with cheddar cheese, chicken apple sausage, an egg, and a homemade biscuit) is amazing.

AndRea J.

Yelp
My go to breakfast spot after I get off work and its in walking distance. Dont knock it because of the area its in they're pretty good.

Bridget G.

Yelp
This is such a sweet neighborhood spot. We were walking our dog and stumbled upon it. It's nothing fancy, I had a BLT and my husband had the chicken sandwich- both were great. The service was above and beyond, he was so sweet and attentive. Great for a weekday breakfast/lunch treat when we're both working from home. We'll be back for sure!

Portia P.

Yelp
This is a great little gem in the neighborhood! Food is made fresh in the kitchen. Prices are great, amount of food is fulfilling. I love the chicken apple sausage for breakfast (made in-house). Thai Ice Tea too! Yum. Check them out if you're in the area, breakfast is really goo!

Janea A.

Yelp
It was ok. Reasonable prices. It's a small breakfast joint ran by a nice guy and his wife. They started to get busy when I arrived and I think they were overwhelmed as it were just them two. My order came out incorrect but they fixed it quickly. I wish the bacon had more flavor but overall it was ok.

Heather D.

Yelp
Yooo... I was visiting from Vegas and searched Yelp for decent breakfast for when leaving the airport.. decided on this place!! Pulling up, I was thrown off a little, because it looked nothing like I expected... bars on the windows and possible sketchy neighborhood.. ha! We went in and found that there was no indoor dining.. but 2 outside benches.. while sitting there, we decided the neighborhood is actually pretty charming. People that walked to this restaurant for their pickup order were very friendly! So anyway.. the dude running the place was awesome!!! So sweet, so helpful, and so attentive!! I got the chicken with biscuit and gravy.. forgot what my friend got.. but both were great!! The biscuit is like a sweet cornbread type biscuit and it pairs well with the chicken and awesome gravy!! I normally don't like chunky hashbrown potatoes, but these are perfect!!! Crispy outside, but soft inside with peppers/onions for added flavor! The neighborhood locals are lucky to have this place! Oh.. and the Vietnamese iced coffee was super strong and good!!

Zee D.

Yelp
Tasty fried chicken sandwiches and fish sandwiches! It's got a Vietnamese twist with the pickled slaw and jalapenos. Love that they have sweet potato fries as an option. The staff are friendly and I'm glad to have a restaurant like this in the neighborhood.

Montgomery P.

Yelp
Great food. Good local location. When it's warm enough to sit outside, that's great. Breakfast omelette is my favorite here.

Linda N.

Yelp
This is a local brunch spot that focuses on the food and service without trying too hard. Upon walking in, there are two communal tables, a self serve water station, and two small windows; one to place your order and the other to pick up your food. There are tables outside where you can sit and enjoy your meal while watching the neighborhood folks... interesting. Pulled Pork Hash - The pork was tender, lost of flavor, moist, and it was not salty at all, phew! The egg was perfectly runny. The potatoes were nicely fried. They didn't skimp with the pulled pork but I would've loved some kind of carb other than the potatoes to accompany it; perhaps some buttered toast or Hawaiian bread. Overall, good dish No lines, good food and service

Ashaki J.

Yelp
I love everything about this place! It's my go to apart when in the area. The owners are real special, always nice; the food is always good. I've only had the fried chicken sandwich a few times and it's always good. My problem is that they were closed the last two times I went there. They are closed on Tuesdays. I went on a Monday morning, then yesterday which was a Sunday morning. Y'all was closed.

Susie C.

Yelp
Went here for lunch on a whim after visiting a nearby park. It's tucked away in a fairly residential neighborhood (and a somewhat run down one at that). But don't let the exterior fool you - the food is *exceptional*. We ordered the fried chicken sandwich - think Bakesale Betty, Cowbird but with a subtle Asian influence. I think they use a little coconut in the fried chicken batter - it was incredible. We are the type of people who would drive some distance to get a sandwich like what they serve here. We also got a grilled chicken sandwich with apple, Brie and pesto which was fantastic. We ordered the fried chicken salad - again, amazing fried chicken. I should also add that the fries with the sandwiches are sooo good - I'm not sure how they seasoned it, but it was perfection. To finish the meal, we got a chocolate chip cookie which was ok. The total damage was less than $40 for the entire meal, a total bargain, particularly given the quality of food here. We will be back!

Elliot W.

Yelp
Love this place. The food is very rich, consistently good and portions are size-able. It's a good spot for a mental health, bad day meal where you just want to feel very full. My typical breakfast order (shared for 2 people): Biscuits and gravy, breakfast platter of eggs sausage and potatoes, Vietnamese iced coffee and a cookie. For lunch, I like their burger. Hours can be a bit unpredictable and sometimes the wait time is a little long but it's totally worth it for fresh delicious food and a very nice staff. Currently no indoor eating due to covid, but they have a few tables out front. It's a cute low key spot to eat and sit in the sun.

Wellspring T.

Yelp
I've tried to order from 10th & Wood four times (in the last month.) Their phone bumps over to v. mail. I keep calling back as the msg suggests -- still no answer. Twice I decided to drive over to order To-Go, only to find the place is all locked up, even tho it IS during their normal biz hours. Today - Sunday was the same when I was hoping for breakfast. Really disappointing. I wish they would have the courtesy to switch their outgoing phone message if/when they have a change of plans. Their food is good, but in the food dessert of Prescott, it is a bummer for a restaurant to be hit or miss.

Liam F.

Yelp
Hospitable staff and fantastic prices! A cute spot for a brunch date or a quick meal to go.. pictured is their biscuits and gravy with fried chicken and potatoes-- $10 a plate! Try the Thai iced tea
