15 Best Boutique Hotels in London With Turndown Tea, Lush Gardens, and Rooftop Bars | Condé Nast Traveler

"The vibe: Raffish yet mysterious  Location: Chelsea  Top amenities: Hans' Bar & Grill, with streetside dining Best for:  Shopping in nearby Knightsbridge There are 56 rooms at 11 Cadogan Gardens—not that you’d know. An amalgamation of four Victorian townhouses, connected by wiggling corridors and staircases that seem to go nowhere, its meandering premises gives it a homely feel—you’ll likely only become aware of the other guests at breakfast. Hidden off a residential square in Chelsea, just edging north of Sloane Square and near the shops of Knightsbridge, this isn’t a hotel zone, and 11 Cadogan Gardens masquerades perfectly as just another house. Once home to a private members’ club—it still has that slightly mysterious, raffish air—it’s now the only Relais & Chateaux property in the capital, with all-day restaurant Hans’ Bar & Grill backing onto Pavilion Road, the pretty pedestrianized street at the back of the hotel. In the past, rooms looked a little zany, and there’s still a bit of that left—like the odd dramatic black-and-gold four-poster bed, and the sexy dark-walled, dark-carpeted staircase—but today’s decor is largely boutique-chic with a hint of English countryside: think neutrals with bright pops of color found on bed cushions, armchairs, and headboards. In 2021, it opened The Apartments by 11 Cadogan Gardens—six apartments, each spread across an entire floor of a Victorian townhouse across the square from the hotel. Even the one-bed apartments have full kitchens. Back in the main building, there’s the moody Chelsea Bar, the plush library, and the Mirror Room—which, as the name suggests, is wall-to-wall mirrors." - Julia Buckley

"Near the posh shopping area of Sloane Square and occupying a series of Victorian townhouses, this small hotel in Chelsea offers some truly attractive communal areas. And you don’t have to be a guest to use them. There’s a small, clubby bar full of leather chairs and dark, moody lighting for an early-evening drink (or to escape the London drizzle). Our favorite spot, though, is the library. Dreamily quiet, its walls lined with old books and its tables stacked with newspapers, it’s a proper oasis for the freelancer or aspiring novelist—especially with a pot (and then another) of English breakfast tea. For those looking to sleepover, guestrooms are a lesson in English elegance, many with roomy, four-poster beds and picturesque views of the leafy park on the adjacent quiet square. "

11 Cadogan Gardens

"How did it strike you on arrival? You may get lost finding 11 Cadogan Gardens—even my taxi driver did. It’s hidden off a residential square in Chelsea, just north of Sloane Square, and is one of the last places you’d expect to find a hotel. It’s fairly hidden amid the red-brick terraced townhouses. Nice. What’s the crowd like? The crowd is well-heeled and slightly older—some repeat guests have been coming for years. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.I’ve stayed twice, with a renovation in between. There used to be a zany feel to all of the rooms and décor, which the refurb has largely done away with, but although I was concerned it might have drained the life out of the place, I loved the superior (one up from entry-level) room I stayed in. The look is boutique chic with a hint of English countryside—think floral curtains and elaborately carved mirror frames. The superior rooms aren’t enormous but feel cozy rather than tight. Certain suites and higher level rooms still have their original, outré décor, like the “Red Room,” which is more old-school aristocrat than Fifty Shades." We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The Hypnos beds are high, plush, and squashy—I slept beautifully. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase?Turndown includes lip balm, pillow mist and a mini Chelsea bun, just in case you'd forgotten your location and needed a sticky treat. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Good water pressure, plush towels and robes, and toiletries by Mayfair parfumier Ormonde Jayne. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Free and super-fast Wi-Fi (100MB). Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?Concierge William is a delight—extremely knowledgeable, passionate about the hotel and the area, and wonderfully chatty. I talked to him for ages, and never had a sense that I was in the way. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.A new restaurant is planned for 2018. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?William the concierge—seriously the highlight of the hotel. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Low-key luxury with personal service." - Julia Buckley

From the moment we arrived at 11 Cadogan Gardens, we felt completely looked after. The hotel is tucked away in a beautiful, quiet square — the perfect blend of luxury and charm. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely eager to make our stay special. Every interaction, from check-in to breakfast service, was professional yet personal.|Our room was elegant and thoughtfully designed, with all the comforts you’d expect from a boutique five-star hotel. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the attention to detail in the décor gave it a true “London townhouse” feel.|Breakfast was another highlight — beautifully presented, delicious, and served in a lovely setting. The location couldn’t be better either — steps from Sloane Square, with great shops, restaurants, and the King’s Road just around the corner.|Overall, 11 Cadogan Gardens is a wonderful mix of sophistication and warmth. We left feeling relaxed and already planning our next visit. Highly recommended!|⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I went to the Cadogan on the 8th December for an afternoon tea. The Ivy had messed up with my reservation, and denied me access with a very unfriendly attitude, so I tried the Cadogan, where I found a much warmer welcome. I have to thank Jaynab for having been so kind and having made me feel at home. The drawing room of the Cadogan is just lovely, elegant, with a lit fireplace and beautifully furnished. The Afternoon Tea was very good and tasty, overall it was a wonderful experience. Highly recommended.

I only stayed for one night while visiting family, but everything about my experience was exceptional. The reception staff made me feel so welcome, really chatty and informative. unfortunately I do not remember his name.||The room was immaculate, beautifully presented, and felt truly luxurious. Such a treat ||Breakfast the next morning was just as good, with excellent service and delicious, lovely mushrooms on toast and a recommendation to try the ginger & orange juice, really good.||Even though my visit was short, the experience made it really special. I’ll definitely be returning and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for comfort, quality, and genuine hospitality.

I had a wonderful experience booking my bridal shoot at 11 Cadogan Gardens Hotel. It is an absolutely stunning location, with impeccable staff, who are warm and friendly. Myself and team were made to feel so welcome on arrival and throughout the day.||The rooms are amazing I highly recommend you visit a stone throw from Kings Roads & Knightsbridge.

Our time at 11 Cadogan Gardens was so lovely. The staff was so attentive and kind at every turn. Our room was a nice size with a comfortable bed and a gorgeous bathtub to relax in. The whole property was beautifully decorated, charming, and quite clean, and the location couldn't have been better – close to several restaurants, shops, cafes, and other attractions – while still being peaceful and quite away from any noise down below.

Beautiful, luxurious hotel in an impeccable location. Staff + service was welcoming and wonderful. Room was clean, unique and comfortable. One of the best hotels I’ve had the pleasure of staying in. Very unique, can’t wait to stay again.

I hadn’t been back since 2002. The hotel needs a serious facelift. Not only because their bathrooms in the smaller rooms are not worthy of the name bathroom. The seem more like a small closet with a tiny sink and something that resembles the WC a small aircraft. Less than 2 square meters.|We were given a different room larger a better bathroom and a small a very uncomfortable bed. |But the cherry on top of this disappointing cake is the restaurant. Hans Grill. Unfriendly incompetent staff. Take for ages for you to get seated even on a slow day. Service is running around but not doing much. My last day at the hotel: 10 mins to get someone to sit me. After that 30 mins an after waving, asking, calling even begging for service I felt transparent. When a left I complained to the manager (or someone who appeared to be the manager) and she looked at me and simply left. |Looks like the clients that come from outside the hotel seem to have precedence over the clients of the hotel. |The head concierge is grumpy and unfriendly. |Other members of the staff competent and warm. |But it doesn’t compensate the bad experiences.|I won’t be coming back. For this price you have far better hotels in the city, even heritage properties that are light years ahead of this one. The Knightsbridge hotel for example, probably the best small heritage property in that part of the city. Not to mention the Nobu where we recently stayed and was absolutely superb.

Yelp
The basket of pastries is quite the deal. There are three large and exceptional quality for 6 pounds. The croissants are the best I've had since Paris. The scrambled eggs are soft and fluffy and the avocado with a poached egg on toast is delightful. This is our fourth visit for breakfast to this restaurant in the week. While previous visits the service was lovely and prompt, today's service was subpar. The seating was quick, but that's the only thing that was quick this morning. The waiter failed to bring out all items ordered and when the pastry baskets came out all of the pastries were cold and not warmed as before. The poached eggs were hard boiled and needed to be replaced and water was never brought to the table after three requests. I would give this restaurant a 2 overall rating if I had not previously rated it a 4 all along.

Yelp
If you are a frequent visitor to London, you know all too well how small the standard hotel rooms are. Imagine my surprise when I was greeted by a spacious room complete with king size bed, workstation and solo chair by the huge flat screen TV. This hotel is tucked in a quiet neighborhood of knightsbridge and easily accessible via Sloane square station by underground. The bathroom was newly renovated with enough toiletries that made our stay even more comfortable. The staff, especially the reception and concierge are genuinely helpful, and I will definitely consider staying here next time I am in London and highly recommend it to others!

Yelp
Mostly good. Excellent attentive staff, great location, close to Harrods, and quiet. But, it's costly.

Yelp
We redeemed travel credits for a 3-night stay, and we were extremely pleased with the sumptuous room and attentive staff. The location is ideal with refurbished Pavilion Road around the corner, Sloane Square tube station 3 short blocks away, and walkable to Kensington, Knightsbridge, and Chelsea.

Yelp
This was a rare gem we came across in London offering a traditional elegant English experience. Hotel staff was superb and accommodating. We were very satisfied with the room and overall experience. The breakfast downstairs in the restaurant was the best breakfast we had in our two weeks traveling London. We hope to stay here again!

Yelp
A traditional English hotel that functions like an exclusive 'home away from home' overlooking Cadogan Gardens. We try to put clients up here if we can because it feels like a relaxed, stately home but has all the ammenities that one would expect from a modern hotel such as the Sanderson or the St Martins Lane Hotel. The rooms are sumptuous, the bar and restaurant are very glamorous and the concierge service is one of the best we have used in London. Single rooms start around the £100 mark, but doubles go for around £200.

Yelp
Usually my family and I's food here is pretty good and reasonably priced. Yet today, unlike normal, our pastries were not warm, but cold, and we didn't get what we ordered in quantity and content in regards to the pastry basket. Also, you must ask for water here or else you will not get any and will die of dehydration, tragically, although perhaps the rain of London shall revive you. If you are lucky...

Yelp
Stayed 2 nights (Oct 4&5) because near a friends apartment. Finally found our room down a convoluted hallway. Not well marked. Deluxe king. Room and bath were small but fine. Problem came with misinformation received from the concierge regarding a football match's availability of tickets. We were told not sold out and no problem getting tickets. Traveled all the way to the stadium to learn it was indeed sold out!! Extremely disappointed. We called the hotel from the stadium but the "concierge" was not helpful and denied telling the 4 of us that tix were available. We all got his information incorrect...I don't think so. So okay hotel with an okay staff.

Yelp
This hotel is a time warp - I halfway expect to see Charles Dickens come down the creaky, wood-paneled staircase. The area (Cadogan Gardens) is residential, so it's very quiet. It is also just a few blocks away from Sloane Square (a tube stop). The service here is just as good as any five star hotel and at half the price. Definitely consider this hotel in your travel plans!

Yelp
I stay at No.11 Cadogan Gardens right before the Olympics and I absolutely loved my stayed. The first thing you'll notice is that place has character. It is down right awesome. From the dark red and black bar to the oil paintings to the old fashion lift. It's awesome!!! I had been living in London for law school and my parents came to visit. After a lot of research I booked 2 rooms at No. 11. My parents arrived at 8 am and the staff had their room ready. After 7 hrs on a plane they were extremely grateful. The staff is first class. They always greeted you with a smile and asked about your day. The rooms are fantastic. The beds were extremely comfortable. The bathrooms are old fashion but very nice. They have everything the modern hotels have but with character. The bar and restaurant are very nice. The bartenders are twin brothers. They make a hell of a Hendricks and tonic. The restaurant serves a great breakfast and afternoon tea is amazing. After having afternoon tea there I was hooked. If you are looking for a unique hotel in a great neighborhood I suggest you check out No. 11 Cadogan Gardens. You won't be disappointed!!

Yelp
this hotel is quant, tasteful and well located. The staff is terrific, especially Will, the concierge.
