I was in town for a conference and was hoping for a good meal before the craziness of the conference began: I got a great meal. I arrived right as they opened, as I had to go set up my exhibit in the early evening. I opted for patio seating, which meant a lovely open-air (but covered) patio, with heat if I needed it.
I began with Winter Thyme, a relatively new (I think) and delicious (I know) addition to the cocktail program, with gin, blood orange & ginger shrub, thyme simple syrup and blood orange juice.
And then it was on to the food. At my friendly and knowledgeable server's recommendation, I began with the Southern caprese, a pairing of grilled green tomato and fried pimento cheese, accompanied by basil peach jam and creme fraiche (and I believe a little sriracha as an option as well). There was a fantastic balance between the grilled, somewhat acidic tomato and the fried cheese.
For my main, I opted for the Comfrey Farms duroc pork chop, accompanied by butternut squash, brussels sprouts, celery & turnip root puree and apple mostarda. This was exceptional. The cook on the pork chop was perfect, with a little crust on the outside and incredible tenderness on the inside. The apple mostarda was a great pairing for the pork, and the vegetables were all nicely done and created a balanced main. This was one of the best pork chops I've had in a long time.
For dessert, I went a little lighter (I was pretty full after the first two courses), with a chocolate and Grand Marnier creme brulee. It was very good, though perhaps not as special as the first two courses, probably just because it was less unique.
All in all, this was an outstanding experience from start to finish: great food, friendly and efficient service, and a comfortable environment. Highly recommend.
