The Best Breweries and Taprooms in Nashville - Eater Nashville

"Smack in the heart of East Nashville, Southern Grist is known for its ambitiously creative beer selection — one glance at its menu and you’ll realize that it doesn’t put any traditional beer constraints on its creations, adding personality through ingredients to every style of beer it produces. From exotic fruits to pickles and marshmallows, Southern Grist fearlessly brews with anything you can think of. If you’re on the move, Southern Grist sells to-go beers in cans and crowlers, but it also has a super comfy, family-friendly lounge and a pet-friendly porch if you’d rather sit and sip through its beer list. Southern Grist opened its second location in the Nations with more seating, a larger bar and patio, plus a fast-casual version of the original’s signature restaurant, Lauter." - Jesse Valenciana, Kellie Walton

Yelp
Schulman's officially has my heart. This vintage-inspired dive on the East side has everything you need for a memorable night. My husband and I stopped in for a quick drink on a summer Friday and ended up chowing down on some of their delicious burgers and smothered fries. We found some street parking a ways down the road, and were not surprised to find this place packed! Even still, we managed to snag a small diner-style booth. They do have patio seating as well - but it's a bit warm for that these days. You order food and drinks at the bar, and then they'll bring your food directly to your table. The bartender was incredibly friendly, the prices are spot on, and our food came out hot and fresh in less than 10 minutes! We each ordered one of their cheeseburgers, which are pretty sizeable and definitely shareable if you're not super hungry. If you like pickles with your burger, I suggest sipping on their pickle beer! This was such a fun addition to a delicious burger. We also ordered two sides of fries - one "Beast" style and one topped with chili and cheese. These comforting classics hit the spot, and I have no doubt we'll visit Schulman's again soon.

Yelp
I had a late dinner here last week and I left impressed with the food, the bar and the service. The menu is very limited but a friend recommended trying the pastrami here so I made the trip to see for myself. It's a small parking lot, and would probably be easier to walk or take an Uber to get here. It's a bar, and it's definitely a good vibe. It's casual and classic. I would definitely return for the sandwich and this would be a great place to hang and have some drinks.

Yelp
Best burger in Nashville. You can fight me. This is such a cool "dive" bar that has awesome service, such a great vibe and I swear the fries animal style and the burgers are better than In N Out.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar! My favorite thing about it, and the reason I return every week, is the fabulous music the DJ plays on vinyl. someone mentioned the vibe is like a 70's bar in the Midwest, and this makes for a fun atmosphere with the dozens of old beer signs and fun floor tiles. A lot of thought went into designing this bar, and the live DJ is the frosting on the cake! Their hamburgers are great, and the vegan chicken sandwich is delicious (I'm not a vegan). Most bartenders are 100% on their service game; others need a little polish. PS - Love the comfy bar chairs.

Yelp
We brought the folks to this spot and it was very cool experience. We sat ourselves in a booth and checked out the menu. A sign at the table advised to order at the bar. We ordered 2 pastrami sandwiches (awesome btw) for the group and I had the burger which was great. My wife ordered the vegan chicken sandwich (fantastic)with an order of fries (hot/tasty) for the table. The food was amazing and cooked to perfection and everything was extremely tasty. The bartender came by and checked on us a couple times to make sure we were good. Had a couple of Budweisers and enjoyed the retro space. The jute box is cool and OG as well as the TV with its tube screen. My 80 year old dad loved everything about this spot and we will be back soon!

Yelp
If you think there's a better bar in Nashville than Schulman's I'm here to tell you you're wrong. Darts? Check. Patio? Check. Beer? Check check. Vintage signage that you couldn't find on the deepest searches of eBay? Check. The best and nicest bartenders in the city? CHECK! Fried pickles, burgers, and pies? Check. A killer espresso martini? You guessed it, check! Must I go on? If you haven't been yet, go. Immediately. Schulman's is the best. Argue with your momma, not me.

Yelp
I hope there is eventually a solution for parking for this area but I doubt that will happen as you usually have to find street parking in the neighborhood to get in. Aside from that, the ambiance has a great traditional dive/neighborhood feel to is where it almost feels as if it's always been there. These crowds can definitely vary on what night you go and what time you show up so don't be surprised if you go and it's completely sparse or others, there is not a seat anywhere in the house. Been a couple of times where it definitely was standing room only. Other times, you can pick your seating. What makes this place stand out is the fun area in the breezeway that they created to be another alley bar feel. For a confined spot, they designed plenty of different feels for where you want to enjoy some drinks and even some bar food snacks. They have a 40oz happy hour special on Friday's which I think is clever and they've been experimenting with menu items so everything is worth trying. Since it's nearby, it's easy to stop in when I see it's not crowded with peeps.

Yelp
First time here tonight and it won't be out last! Loved the ambiance of a 70s Midwest bar right in East! The staff were very friendly and attentive. The beers are reasonably priced, and the fried pickles were delicious! Great place to just hang out, and we can't wait to play darts next time.

Yelp
Great interiors and fantastic feel especially with the vinyl DJ. Really great vegan chicken sandwich and fried pickles. Drinks are pretty good. It is regularly very crowded so it can be a while before you can find a table or get the bartender's attention to order

Yelp
A great local watering hole with indoor and outdoor seating. My group snagged a spot on the patio and really enjoyed the vibe. A decent drinks selection and the fries beastie style were so good.

Yelp
We really really wanted to love this place. We have fond memories of Southern Grist in this location and were so excited to see what's billed as a local beer bar and tavern in their spot. We went around 5pm on a Saturday night. Almost every table inside was full but we were lucky enough to snag two barstools. First off, I absolutely love the decor. The old school beer signs remind me of growing up in northern Wisconsin, I recognize more than a few from my youth. They nailed it too with the full backbar and old tv playing Miami Vice. There's seating outside in front and also another covered bar in back situated between the two buildings that's quieter since the music inside was blaring. And sadly this is where my love affair ended. The music was so loud we gave up trying to have a conversation, I can't imagine how loud it must be the nights the DJ is spinning. For a place billing itself as a beer bar there isn't a draft beer tap on sight. So okay, we'll pass on a beer and order a cocktail. My husband ordered a vodka martini. No can do. The cocktails are premade so the only option was a gin martini. Even though we were sitting and looking at hundreds of bottles of liquor they couldn't make a martini. So he chose a margarita, which only comes frozen slushy-style in a very small glass. I had one of their premade Negronis. Next we looked at the menu to enjoy something from the kitchen. Another pass for us, the menu is limited with the only vegan option being a fake chicken sandwich. I get that they're a bar and so are keeping the menu simple. We didn't come to eat anyway so not a big deal. What is a big deal for us is paying these prices for premixed cocktails in small glasses. Unfortunately for us our hopes of this becoming a place in the neighborhood where we could enjoy a great drink isn't happening at Schulman's. 5 ***** for ambience 3 *** for noise level 2 ** for only premade cocktails I'm generous with my four star rating because I am happy to see it doing well, and hope maybe in the future they'll take a tip from a real Northwoods bar and make their drinks in-house.

Yelp
Love the ambiance! Super cute place with great drink and yummy food. Love that they have a delicious vegan sandwich!

Yelp
Such a great addition to EN! Old school dive bar feel with a hip touch. Great collection of old beer signs. Nice outdoor patio and cool vibe. Pastrami sandwich is fantastic! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Brand new. Very nice buildout and a classic bar interior. Clean, comfortable, and inviting! This place has all the potential in the East! I only worry about the staff. I understand it's the first day but there is simply no excuse for being so painfully slow and unaware. The food is basket fried bar snacks, we had fries and something wrapped in bacon. The eclectic mix of staff is like a 90's sitcom cast, not a well-trained team of hospitality professionals. All and all this location is great and Porter needs something open late with an atmosphere. I wish them all the best and look forward to returning soon!

Yelp
Good corner bar, need to try it out again on a less crowded day, but it was good and simple. Alright vibe.

Yelp
I can't believe no one is talking about their burgers! We needed a late night meal after a comedy show & found this gem with kitchen open until 1:30am. Husband & I both agree their burgers could compete w/ the best of them in Nashville! The crowd was young but a Saturday night at 1:30am I'd guess nothing different. The vibe was still so chill. Was able to snag a table, sip a tasty beverage & avoid a Waffle House regretful morning. Bartenders & staff might just be the friendliest & most welcoming in Nashville. I've already recommended it to a cpl friends today & will definitely be going back.

Yelp
This is purely a food review. Let's get this straight. It's a cool spot. Now the food. The cheeseburger is great and my goto for this simple menu. One of the best burgers in town. The fried bologna sandwich is pretty good though it would be better on a bun. The problem is the pastrami sandwich. They shave the pastrami and because of this it lacks the feeling of eating pastrami. It's more like just eating bread. The bread is chewy and which makes you wonder if there is meat in there at all. Please change this to more of a traditional type of slice and this one could sell much better. Because at the moment it's a dud. The fries are eh. Not worth it in my opinion but we all like different types of fries. I'm looking forward to trying the veggie "chicken cutlet" sandwich sometime, just haven't gotten to it yet. Reason is the burger is pretty good. That's all

Yelp
This bar has been open less than a week and it is already on the social map for being awesome. The ambience, music, food, drinks, staff are top-notch for sure. If you're looking for a step back in time several decades, this is the place. The bartender, Ryan, was a consummate and courteous professional. I will be back again and again and...

Yelp
I like this place. Excellent burger close to my house. I'm a bit of a burger connoisseur, so take that for what it's worth. :-)

Yelp
Here's the thing. This place knows it's identity! I'm not big on the new dive bar idea. It sort of reminds me of buying a pair of new ripped jeans. But, the vibe is cool and the drinks are good. Not what you would get at an actual dive bar with rich local history and stories to tell. But, if you dig that vibe and want to filter out the seedy, sketchiness that you'd get at a long standing dive. This place is for you. Parking, meh. But that's everywhere.

Yelp
Trendy little bar on the east side. The food is trash but the ambience and the drinks make up for it

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood down the street. Love that it's opened late night. Love how they transformed. Love the dart boards. Customer service was awesome. Bartender was great. Food came out fast. All good things. Pastrami sandwich is labeled pastrami dip so I was assuming that the sandwich itself came with an au jus to dip the sandwich in. Didn't come with jus, but very tasty. Nice portion of fries. My 2 cents on preparation: They needed to either be fried longer or blanched them then drop them for the 2nd fry for a crispier outside, creamier inside. All in all come back and check it out again. Great addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Favorite burger in Nashville currently. Cool atmosphere and nice people. Reasonable pricing. It's too bad they don't have more parking in the lot, but there is street parking. It's very good and it's consistent.

Yelp
I realize it's all the rage, but I had nonexistent service and despite a wall of bourbon they were unable to make me an old fashioned. I get not offering "pretentious cocktails" as their website proclaims -- but not even an old-fashioned? Thumbs down. Not sure what they're thinking. Only positive is location and decor.

Yelp
Although good obnoxiously loud music, overpriced like most places. Good decor, trying a little too hard to be old school. Decent vibe. I'll be back for another run. Good set up

Yelp
We went there late evening Saturday night. Great, Vibey place, crowd was large and cool but, we immediately left due to the DJ music being pumped, way too loud, thru the ceiling speakers and it sounded like ass. Looking forward to trying again on a non-DJ night.
