Yelp
Long-standing craft beer bar that sits at down a flight of steep stairs, off teeming, hectic MacDougal Street. It's quite a change of pace, just down those few stairs, entering a much quieter subterranean space, cave-like and dim-lit. The decor is funky, the wall on the bar side cluttered with knickknacks, stickers, pictures, and drawings, over exposed brick, subway tiles, and worn wood. Seats at a narrow bar and two small tables by the door. Usually serviced by one person at the bar (never visited weekends).
In 10 years of occasional visits, the distinctive vibe doesn't change, but the deep, lengthy, and interesting beer menu does. Primarily bottles and cans. Always a great selection of Belgians; bring a fellow Belgian fan to share some of the fun, large formats. Generous European representation overall. There are plenty of good, newer local crafts, but not their focus as with many bottle shops around town. Beer selection is well-represented across multiple styles, including malty brews and schwarzbiers, which get less love at other bars. All served in an assortment of eclectic beer glasses.
As close to a beer speakeasy as NYC has. Not a very comfortable space, truly a hideaway for geeks or open-minded beer curious. Superb beer list.
