Yelp
Matchbox has been my go-to breakfast/brunch spot lately. Their veggie omelet is just sooo good and it comes with equally amazing potatoes. Every time I come here the service is attentive and well-timed without being overly intrusive. What more could you want?! Build-your-own omelets and benedicts are available alongside their specialties. Carnivores seem to love their pot roast which you can add to skillets, etc.!

Olivia J.

Yelp
Stopped into matchbox for a Saturday brunch. It's a bit of a smaller space so we had a bit of a wait as it was pretty busy. Breakfast was good, I had a the matchbox bowl which was a good basic breakfast scramble. My friend got the burger and enjoyed that. Portion sizes are good as well. Overall a solid brunch spot with options for everyone.

Yelp
The French toast was very soft and delicious. The chicken and waffles were a perfect balance of sweet and savory. We were expecting the French toast to look like what others had posted in their reviews, but still very good! We paired our brunch with some delicious coffee drinks! The service was helpful with recommendations and always attentive by checking in on us. The inside of the restaurant is so comfortable, very homey. One of my new favorite spots for breakfast in Grand Rapids. Can't wait to try more of the menu!

Joeita M.

Yelp
Matchbox Diner knows how to brunch! I walked right in without a wait this Tuesday morning with a friend. We both ordered the Lox Benny and of course had to share the Crème Brûlée French toast as a sweet treat! The Benedict was delicious and not too salty. The french toast was the perfect treat after our meal. A hidden brunch gem of GR!

Mary K.

Yelp
Unbelievably delicious food! Crème brûlée French toast was thick and sweet and topped with plenty of fruit and nuts. Matchbox Breakfast had REAL shaved him, not processed him. The American potatoes were roasted crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and seasoned just right Our server did a great job making sure we had everything we needed and made recommendations that were spot on. The restaurant was clean and updated. If I lived closer, I would come here every week!

Yelp
Love this place. Everything is always done really well. They have breakfast and lunch with a full bar and you can order from either at any time. Their matzo ball soup is my favorite item on the menu but I've never been disappointed by anything I've ordered. I also enjoy any of their items that include their pot roast. It's so tender and flavorful. Saturday is busy so get there early or expect a wait. It's a smaller place with a bunch of booth and bar seats and some tables in the front as well as outdoor seating.

Yelp
My friend and I wanted to check this place out because we've never been and I'm so glad we did! This place is located in East Town in a nice area with street parking. The inside was nice and cozy and we got seated right away. The food was amazing!! I never had French toast on challah bread before and it changed my life. Now this is the only way I want to eat French toast. Our server also said they make it in house. My friend had their California burger and fries and it did not disappoint. The fries covered half the plate lol. Since we came here for lunch, I would definitely come back here again to try their dinner menu. The only reason why I did not give them 5 stars is because I wish there were more vegan options.

Yelp
My wife and I had a lovely Saturday breakfast at Matchbox. We were able to get in before the late morning rush. It's a small and lively place with conversations going on all around us, which at times was loud. Robin was our server who also is the general manager. He showed solid leadership skills in modeling hard work and professionalism, in leading his small team. I got the Matchbox omelet, and my wife enjoyed the veggie omelet. Both were amazing. The only downside is the lack of parking. I recommend finding a spot on the street, north of the building. Don't forget to ask for a cup of coffee to go, for free.

Yelp
Great place Alisa was our Server, she was fantastic great info about this place and served us quickly. I ordered the Pastrami Ruben and a Matchbox Bloody Mary. The inside of the location was decorated with pictures. We sat outside, with a great view of the neighborhood. And was very pleasant with minimal noise.

Emma T.

Yelp
I've walked past matchbox many times but never popped in. I'm so glad that I did! The menu isn't huge but certainly has options for everyone. The table for cheese curbs and crab cakes - both of which were lighter than we expected! Then we got burgers, mahi mahi and the lamb. The truffle fries and grits were stars on the plates. Everything was lovely and the service was friendly and quick. This is a great place for when you don't know where to go!

Yelp
Breakfast is my go-to at Matchbox, but they also serve lunch and dinner in the fall and winter months. I recently met a friend for a weekday breakfast and had a great meal. We were seated right away, but the space is pretty small and they can get super busy, so reservations are recommended. The breakfast menu leans heavily to the savory side, which is great for someone like me. I've ordered several items from this breakfast menu and favorites include the lox benedict, steak and eggs, and the Matchbox breakfast. I always have to get the American fries - they're small potatoes that are cooked, smashed, and then deep-fried, giving them lots of crispy, craggly edges that are so delicious. I tried something new to me this visit - the veggie brekky bowl. It was a nice portion and I liked the different veggies, including poblano peppers which is not a super common ingredient in this area, so that was fun. I added a bunch of Blis hot sauce which gave it a nice little kick. Other options for lunch/dinner include deli sandwiches, fish and chips, matzo ball soup, and salads. They also have a full bar and a selection of brunch cocktails. Parking continues to be a bit of a pain in this area, but it's worth it for a visit to Matchbox. Get your name on the list and check them out!

Yelp
Me and my friends came because of high score review . The food is ok. But we did wait more than one hour for the food. We wait for our lunch until 2:30pm, it's not lunch anymore. And the AC is so cold, hungry and cold made me crazy. And all the food become cold when they come out due to the cold AC. Really not satisfying this part. We report this to the manager, the manager did apologize to the long way, however, will she only this is just apologize. She did not offer anything for excessive wait.

Tracy H.

Yelp
It's been so long since I came back! But Matchbox is one of those gems in Grand Rapids that I go to whenever I visit. I do highly recommend getting on the waitlist online before you go in just to save you some time because they're ALWAYS packed. The food always meets my standards. The chicken and waffles is sublime! The chicken skin is crispy and well seasoned. The Poutine is a heavy dish but I do recommend sharing with friends and always get the egg on top! The hangover bowl does it's job, cures hangovers lol Ambiance is very loud but very inviting. This place always just gives me good nostalgia. Highly recommend.

Nancy M.

Yelp
Nice selection of food! The service was quick and it is a very quaint eatery! I would highly recommend the CREME Brûlée French toast and the Matchbox Poutine.

Denisse V.

Yelp
Wow I really like Matchbox! I've been here for breakfast a couple times and both times were a pleasant experience. I really enjoyed the service! Breakfast with my husband, you know for some "us" time, is a special treat so we really like to take advantage of these moments. Both times our server was super attentive but respected our privacy at the same time! I'm always on a journey to find the best eggs Benedict. I can confidently say matchbox has a superb one on the menu. The Matchbox! Like my husband says, "If their name is on it, it's got to be good"! The large eggs are poached perfectly. Their hollandaise sauce is creamy and does its job of balancing flavors. Also, get this, the English muffin was not soggy! They know what they're doing ! I usually get the side of potatoes which are crispy and salty. A very nice add on to the richness of the Benedict. I've also had their hash browns, not really a fan of these. They were too buttery and weren't seasoned. Stick with the crispy home fries My husband got the Carlton, a very very savory dish. If you like to be bold in the morning this dish if for you. Will I return? Yes, I would like to try some of their omelets and lunch items! SYOY!

Taylor G.

Yelp
Had a great Sunday brunch here. The ability to add your name to the waitlist is so helpful. We had the steak & eggs and byo Benedict with latkes, both of which were delicious. Friendly service, great food, would definitely recommend.

Amia E.

Yelp
Highly recommend the matchbox Mac and Cheese, that was honestly the yummiest Mac and cheese I've ever had at a restaurant. The espresso martini was delicious as well and made the perfect pairing. Service was great as well as the atmosphere. 10/10 would go again

Jenny M.

Yelp
Cute little restaurant with pretty good brunch. Our group enjoyed ourselves only down fall was parking was annoying we had to find a really far parking spot. I would go again if I'm in the area.

Salina B.

Yelp
Food is fantastic. Service is great. And the Ambience is chill. Every time we go here we are always so impressed. Definitely worth a visit. Reubens are tremendous. Split Pea is phenomenal.

Chris H.

Yelp
No Parking Available - No Parking Available - No Parking Available. The atmosphere here is masterfully done. There's an outer shell of the old classical building with a wonderful tin ceiling. Then tasteful added wood elements and a hint of modern. The place is very very busy, however there is no Parking Available. I ordered the Carlton Breakfast, which is Eggs, American Fries, Pot Roast, Gravy, and Toast. Individually everything was cooked to perfection. The eggs were amazing, potatoes cooked perfectly with a nice seasoning, amazing pot roast, and Yummy bread. Together the portion size was excellent and at $16 a very good value. The person I was with ordered the Jerry Seinfeld Sandwich. She got the half size ($16), it was very large as big as most places full size. It was stated to be excellent. The service was excellent. Had about a 20 minute wait to be seated. Friendly and efficient staff. Overall an excellent establishment. Did I mention though that there is No Parking Available in the area. If your going to build up and area, parking needs to be considered, not just Street Parking only, bull. The food was 5 stars, however I can't condone No Parking. Therefore the overall score is a 4 Stars. Would I return? Yes, but I hope I'm not driving.

Ryan F.

Yelp
The food was great and the mock tail margarita that I had was delicious! I would suggest the ahi tuna and/or the Mac and cheese!

Joseph S.

Yelp
I had a great experience here on Tuesday for dinner. Server was busy but great and personable. Food was delicious I ordered the fish and chips it's a huge plate. Would come back again.

Olivia Y.

Yelp
My friend and I came here after our other East town breakfast spot fell through on a Monday morning. It was still warm outside so we snagged one of their outside tables which was big enough to fit 4 people. I got an omelette, she got the lox Benedict. Food came out quickly and was delicious! Friendly servers. Great portion sizes (had to take some home). I loved they they had gluten free toast as an option as well. Overall this place can be summed up as breakfast/brunch food that's clearly above diner dining but not as frilly/costly as more expensive brunch places. We will be back!

Samrana B.

Yelp
Definitely make reservations online to avoid the wait. They have gluten free options and are able to accommodate any allergies which is always assuring having a gluten allergy. I got the gluten free matchbox breakfast was so good!! The Turkey sausages was just right and they were able to make the hash browns gluten free. My partner got some sort of burrito with potatoes and a soup that he said was really good. We will definitely visit again and try other items on the menu.

Megan H.

Yelp
I tried the BLT and it was delicious! The bacon, lettuce, and tomato were fresh and tasty, and the bread was nicely toasted. The homemade aioli added a special touch. I'll definitely order it again! However I think next time I'll ask for the bacon to be less crispy it was a bit too crunchy.

Duke G.

Yelp
This is an excellent neighborhood spot, it's got a pub feel. The food is very good. The staff has always been pleasant.

Andrea M.

Yelp
Was finally able to have breakfast here and so happy we did!! Our waitress was extremely kind and had great suggestions about the menu. They had quite a bit of cocktails on the menus which was a pleasant surprise AND they were delicious! The portions of the food are huge! You can split an entrée or get two to split with a partner. The biscuits and gravy were to die for! The sausage in the gravy taste as if it was fresh and homemade. Everything was made to perfection. The pot roast in the burrito was so lean amazing. We will be sure to come back again and again :). This place is for sure worth the wait if there is one to get in and have this food! We went on Wed morning and sat right down

Jen H.

Yelp
Tiny little spot with great food and a full bar. Friendly service tops off the whole experience, and it's in a very walkable part of town.

Nichole K.

Yelp
We love this local, Eastown diner. Great for brunch, lunch and dinner! Last dined there with a group of girl friends for lunch to celebrate a birthday. We all had a brunch item (mine was an omlette with the BEST fried home potatoes) and we all had mimosas!! Celebrate! Service is awesome - probably because the place is quite small - which I love. The place has great atmosphere and full bar. Parking along side the street (with meters) or find street parking down neighborhood side streets for free. Go! PS - they do have waitlist.

Sydney K.

Yelp
Matchbox is the best. I've been here a few times now, and they never disappoint. It's the perfect place to meet up for dinner and drinks after a day of shopping in the area. The atmosphere is simple but warm, with the little flickering votives on the tables. Our server was really great. She was making drinks that night too, and recommended the perfect cocktail! Chica Cherry Cola--a Coke and bourbon with a hint of grenadine. I can't wait to go back even just for another one of those. The burger I got was really tasty as well. Can't wait to hit up Argo's next door again, and get food here after!

Montserrat D.

Yelp
Dishes were a good portion size, staff very friendly, buttermilk pancakes were amazing! The home fries could have been a little more crispy! Gravy on the biscuits and gravy was very good and not too overpowering. Hollandaise sauce and avocado on the matchbox tied everything together perfectly!

Chelsea B.

Yelp
Matchbox is one of the best brunch spots in town. Anything with lox or pot roast is perfection! Just make sure you join the waitlist to get a table on weekends. Great service and cocktails are incredible! The ruby mule is my favorite

Sinai P.

Yelp
Never new there was a fun brunch place like this here! I think everyone should try out Matchbox before waiting hours at Wolfgangs. The interior was so woody and warm. I got the Lox bagel-it did not let me down! Scrumptious! Free street parking availble

Rachel D.

Yelp
This is by far one of my FAVORITE restaurants in Michigan. The diner is absolutely amazing. It's a smaller, more intimate diner located in the heart of Eastown. The interior is absolutely gorgeous with multiple different options for seating, a bar, booths and tables. They have incredible drinks for not only breakfast time but lunch as well. There is a great half price happy hour that I love too. The food is OUTSTANDING. Two of the head chefs, Robin and Jojo, always come out to ask how I am enjoying my meal and see if there's anything I need. They accommodated all my requests and made truly outstanding food. I have gone alone, with my family but also with a big group and they handled it excellently. I can't wait to go back!!

Monica P.

Yelp
The menu is creative, the quality of the food is excellent, and the portions are generous. One of my favorite places to eat breakfast.

Sarah W.

Yelp
I wish I lived in GR so I could come here more often!! I absolutely LOVED this food and our server Claudia was super nice! Also the food was perfectly cooked. A 100% great experience!

Natasha H.

Yelp
OMG! This place is absolutely amazing, the sneaky link and I go often and we would always get this one server who was literally the best fucking person on the planet. I'm pretty sure her name is Lindsey, anyway she's great. Haven't seen her in so long but the sneaky link and I have had to tone things down a bit, block is hot. Food is so good like the chef could get away with anything they want. Just such a cute little place with a fantastic vibe. I will admit that parking is a bit rough but worth it.

Kylie C.

Yelp
We tried this place out for happy hour/early dinner (I've been wanting to get over here since it opened!) There was no wait at about 5:40 and plenty of seating. Our server was friendly and helpful, but once the rush hit (about 6/6:15-6:30) we ended up waiting quite a bit before she came back to take our food order. Both my friend and I did "build your own" drink with sparkling (3 choices) and juice(s) (could pick up to 2). I was torn between the harvest risotto and the burger, and ended up going burger route for the fries (and because it's a popular dish). I asked for it to be a rare as they could make it - it was a nice deep pink (solid medium rare) which is a win for me when eating out. My friend just wanted veggies and fries for dinner, so she ordered the bacon'n'brussels. Per her, they were delish, not al sentv, but no squishy (just right). Their fries were amazing - not too greasy, moderately thin, and not soggy! Overall I'd definitely return (to explore their other menu items, brunch, etc).

Esther C.

Yelp
Luckily no wait this afternoon when I arrived around 1:30pm! Matchbox is a cozy diner with friendly staff and decent flavors. The menu has great items if you're looking for something more than classic breakfast/brunch foods. For example, I ordered the crab and lobster eggs benedict (a July special) that tasted amazing! The Lox Platter was nice but a bit too salty. The side items also seemed a little disproportionate to the amount of salmon and bagels provided (a LOT of onions and capers) - but that may be just personal preference. Street parking is available as well as 3-4 parking spots behind the diner.

Brian F.

Yelp
Fantastic food fantastic service. Absolutely hands down best poutine and cheese curds in west Michigan and maybe the entire state. I added curds to the poutine and hoping this reviews standardizes this as part of the poutine ingredients. I seek out poutine and curds and my ventures have led to much disappointment. My search is over. Please do not change these menu items (like the Pasley Pig in grand haven did :( )

Tanya T.

Yelp
Super cute spot in GR! Perfect for brunch or lunch. Delicious food, nice decor and great atmosphere. Not much parking so you will need to park in the neighborhood behind the restaurant and walk. A nice touch were the mini coffee pots they bring to eat table. Expect a long wait though so definitely take advantage of the online wait list they have, I wish I had. We all liked our food but between the long wait and the slow service I had to give this 3 stars.

Aaron S.

Yelp
I hesitate to recommend because we love this place so much. Amazing food & staff. We absolutely love a dinner perched up at the bar.

Melissa X.

Yelp
the chicken piccata is so good! i dine in so that i can get my food as fresh and hot as it can be. the chicken breast is moist and i don't even usually like chicken breast like that :)

Sarah S.

Yelp
This place has so much character! Came here for Sunday brunch. My two young kids got crayons with their menu. Used their Yelp waitlist tool and was able to walk right to our table. The bloody Mary's are a favorite of my husbands and comes with a lot of garnishes to snack on. Everyone enjoyed their orders...beef sandwich, benny (open faced breakfast sandwich that you can choose 3 components to go on your English muffin and fried egg, breakfast burrito, pancakes, fries. They have the best breakfast potatoes (extra crispy on the outside and soft on inside) that come as a side with a lot of the breakfast options. It is small inside, but that's part of the charm. Our server was very accommodating letting us order a lunch menu item 30 minutes before officially being lunch time. The Swedish mini fish you get at the end is a fun treat.

Hankerton H.

Yelp
$14 for inedible potatoes and awful taste. Thankfully I used a gift card. Will not be back

Chris V.

Yelp
I went here and was so stoked to try one of their Rueben's, but I was ridiculously disappointed. I saw there were two sizes for my sandwich order, and I was told the larger one (which was $24), was very large. I instead ordered the smaller $16 Rueben and it was the saddest plate I've received from a restaurant in a very long time. The plate had a pickle on it (it was massive) that was as large as the half of a sandwich. I am not kidding. On top of that, it included a large helping of fries which was easily 2-3x as much food as the sandwich. Dude, I ordered a $16 Reuben. This menu item makes absolutely zero sense. It was tasty for what it was, but come on. The fact they are charging $16 for FOUR bites of a sandwich with almost NOTHING on it, a pickle as large as the sandwich, and a TON of French fries inspired me to write a review and warn others. I wanted to love this place, but the value and composition of what I ordered and received was absolutely insane. At the very least, if you're already set on going, I recommend ordering something else.

Amber S.

Yelp
The service was great. But I was really shocked at the price of the Reubens for what you get...I ordered a half sandwich and it was $13. A full would have been $20. for a few slices of corned beef and one piece of bread...go down the street to Schnitz deli and get a whole sandwich for less than the half sandwich price here.

Jen P.

Yelp
In town for soccer game and we are an early dinner. The service was phenomenal. They went out of their way to make pancakes at 4pm for my girl even tho not usually available after 2. Regular and sweet potato fries were perfect! The Lamb burger was yummy, the Joe Maddon delicious and the grapefruit IPA hit the spot! Love they have potato latkes and matzah bam soup on the menu. What a great find! And covid safe and took our phone number for potential contact tracing. Thank you Matchbox!!

Natalie D.

Yelp
I like this place for, what I'd call, comfort food. The menu has sandwiches, burgers, fried chicken, mac and cheese, and other goodies. One of my favorites is the matchbox burger because it has everything already on it that I'd typically order, like cheddar, bacon and an egg. The atmosphere is nice and modern looking, with pops of vintage diner vibes. Great place for lunch or dinner, I've yet to try their breakfast, which is served all day!
