"Calder Plaza, Downtown. American sculptor Alexander Calder created what became the recognizable symbol of Grand Rapids. Located in front of city hall, "La Grande Vitesse" (meaning "the great swiftness") is a monumental, site-specific sculpture. Since it's installation in 1969, it has been the center of a well-attended art festival that occurs downtown every summer. The annual Festival of the Arts is credited with creating an appreciation for public art within the community and opening the way to Art Prize."

"Vault of Midnight, Downtown. Holy casino, Batman. We've hit the jackpot! Vault of Midnight is a treasure trove of comics and "stuff" — board games, collectables and, of course, lots of comics. Between the graphic novels, manga and rare or indie comics, there's plenty of graphic eye candy to be discovered."

"Madcap Coffee, Downtown. Madcap boasts the highest quality coffee and highest concentration of hipsters of all the downtown coffee shops. At their sun-filled location, they roast their own beans and make a mean pour-over."

"Grand Rapids Public Library, Downtown. The historic portion of the building was constructed in 1904 and has always served as the public library. Through the years the building has undergone expansions and renovations, but it's century-old charm remains. Visit the upstairs reading room for hard-to-find art and culture magazines."

"City Flats Hotel, Downtown. City Flats is a LEED Gold certified boutique hotel in the very center of downtown. Each room is uniquely designed in eco-friendly decor. With an event space and blow dry bar in the hotel, it's a favorite spot for formal events in Grand Rapids. Dine, drink or have coffee in their CitySēn Lounge. The happy hour menu is delightful."

"Fed Galleries at Kendall College of Art and Design, Downtown. Kendall College of Art and Design (KCAD) has a number of galleries on campus but the ones at the "Fed" are the ones to check out. It's located in the historic Federal Building, renovated to meet LEED gold standards by the US Green Building Council. The Fed Galleries feature exhibitions by visiting artists from around the world, and sometimes KCAD faculty and MFA students, too."

"Reserve Wine & Food, Downtown. We can't decide what we love most about Reserve: the longest wine list in West Michigan, a locally sourced and inspired menu or the fantastic service. Their stylish interior sets the tone for refreshing lunches, intimate dinners and boozy private parties—trust us, we can throw back the champagne at Reserve. If you're having a hard time choosing just one item on the menu, order a wine flight or an expertly paired charcuterie and cheese plate."

"Courtyard Marriott Downtown, Downtown. The Downtown Marriott is newly remodeled, fresh and clean. You can stay for a good price and, hopefully, get a room with a river view."

"Fountain Street Church, Downtown. The Romanesque exterior of Fountain Street Church features intricate carvings and masonry. The shimmering Byzantine narthex is gilded in gold. The vibrant stained glass windows that line the sanctuary are only rivaled by the enormous organ. Call ahead to schedule a brief walking tour of the interior."

"Grand Rapids Art Museum, Downtown. With over 5,000 works continually rotating through their galleries, you're bound to find something that speaks to you at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. They do a great job of bringing in interesting exhibits and providing interactive tours. You could cover the museum in a comfortable two hours, but make sure to stop at their worthy gift shop on your way out."

"Osteria Rossa, Downtown. A laid back vibe, warm yellow lights and the smell of a wood fired pizza oven make Osteria Rossa the perfect spot for a relaxing dinner downtown. Indulge in plate of saucy, homemade pasta or order Italian share plates for the table. There's also a nice wine selection and interesting beer menu available."

"Grand Rapids Children's Museum, Downtown. Traveling with children can be trying, but have no fear, respite is neigh at the Grand Rapids Children's Museum. With charming exhibits and more hands-on attractions than "do not touch" signs, your kids will find plenty of activities to engage their senses. Most appropriate for ages up to ten, there are plenty of chances for parents to get in on the action, too."

"Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, Downtown. If gaudy and auspicious is your kind of vibe, stay at Grand Rapid's very own Grand Budapest Hotel—also known as the Amway Grand. There are multiple bars and restaurants on site, ranging from a mahogany and leather-clad gentleman's bar on the ground floor to a fine-dining restaurant with sweeping views of the city and the river on the top floor. It's worth snooping around the lobby even if you've booked a room somewhere else."

"JW Marriott Grand Rapids, Downtown. While the JW Marriott may not be a destination hotel, the plentiful meeting rooms, up-scale vibe and energetic atmosphere make it perfect for business trips. The hotel bar, Mixology, has inventive signature cocktails and a great casual menu. However, the best thing about lounge space is the view of the river through the floor to ceiling windows. You really can't beat that."

"Grand Central Market, Downtown. Pin Grand Central Market on your map if you're in Grand Rapids for an extended stay. It's the only spot in the heart of downtown to pick up basic groceries and personal care items.They also have a nice wine and beer selection if you want to bring something back to your hotel room. The deli is open for breakfast and lunch and offers a variety of fresh options, but most importantly, always has delicious baked goods."

"Rosa Parks Circle, Downtown. Rosa Parks Circle is at the center of the downtown area. The location serves as a performance venue, skateboard kid hangout, and a place for community yoga or swing dancing classes. The city screens movies there in the summer and converts it to an ice skating rink in the winter. Other features include a fairly clean public restroom and a bike tune-up station."

"The Artist's Studio at MoDiv, Downtown. When you enter the shops at MoDiv, you may be lucky enough to run into the artists in residence there. If you're not into their paintings, you may be interested in their knowledge of the downtown area."

"Z's Bar & Restaurant, Downtown. Most of our memories from Z's are a bit fuzzy. Their best feature is that they're within stumbling distance of all the hotels downtown and the kitchen is open until 2am. Whether you need a rack of their award winning ribs and or just some greasy french fries, Z's is there for you at the end of the night. Another bonus: the attached party store can make booze deliveries to your hotel room!"

"Apothecary Off Main, Downtown. If you're the type to compulsively buy hand lotion, you've been warned. Apothecary Off Main is full of soaps, oils, lotions, balms, scrubs, creams, candles, etc., all handcrafted in America. There are also a surprising number of men's grooming products to keep your lumberjack and his beard all tidy. Apothecary Off Main is one of the shops at MoDiv."

"Art of the Table, East Hills. Whether you’re entertaining a small group of friends or a small crowd, Art of the Table will have the perfect gourmet cheeses, crackers, sweets and beverages to satisfy your guests. It’s also a great place to pick up that perfect gift for the host/hostess or your foodie friend."

"Cherry Park, East Hills. This park is a local gathering spot for families using the playground and splash pad, kids playing on the basketball court and couples walking their dogs. Technically a "mini park," it's nestled next to a small convenience market and ice cream shop. We recommend grabbing a cone and taking in some nature and observing the locals."

"Rowster Coffee, East Hills. For your fix of pour-over coffee, this is the spot to go. With a daily selection of house-roasted brews and espresso drinks this is a favorite place to caffeinate. We recommend settling in and enjoying the rotating selection of artwork and millennials. We also regularly grab some beans to go to enjoy in the comfort of our own Chemex."

"Sovereign Arms Tattoo, East Hills. Owned and operated by Gareth Hawkins and his band of super-talented artists, this shop embodies the tradition of tattooing. With walls filled with artwork in a style that has been described as "turn of the century American" and "World War II, sailor-style with a hint of Japanese influence" the parlor feels classic and familiar. You might be lucky enough to get a walk-in spot, but some of these guys have a waiting list months long, so you know they're good."

"HyperOptik, East Hills. Offering a wide variety of unique prescription and non prescription eye wear from exclusive eye wear brands from all over the world, this is the place to go to outfit your peepers.When he's not working on finding unique frames, you can find the owner working on his vintage BMW motorcycle in the back room."

"Metal Art Studio, East Hills. This small jewelry shop also functions as a custom jeweler studio. You can have a piece designed and created for you, or you can be a part of the process from initial concepts right down to the cast molding."

"Lee & Birch, East Hills. Located in former auto shop, this boutique offers a curated selection of women's clothing and accessories. The staff is super friendly and they stock well-know premium brands, as well as hidden gems."

"Le Bon Macaron, East Hills. Step into Le Bon Macaron for a Parisian experience in the Midwest, where the macarons taste as good as they look. The flavors range from classic such as chocolate, vanilla and raspberry to unique such as poppy, yuzu, or rose lychee. Enjoy a cup of coffee as you sit in the small cafe, relax and do some people watching, as the French do best."

"Furniture City Creamery, East Hills. Tucked between shops on a brick street, Furniture City Creamery will satisfy your sweet tooth with one of their small batch ice cream flavors. They offer interesting flavors that change daily and have vegan options. And they’re open year round because ice cream is not a seasonal food."

"Jonny B's, East Hills. Sometimes it’s the simple things that satisfy, like a hot dog on a split-top toasted bun. Top it with coleslaw for the Hampton Meeks or kraut for the Kraut Dog. They also have veggie dogs, hamburgers, and sandwiches for those who want something else. They’re open until 3AM on Friday and Saturday so they’ll take care of your 2am hotdog craving. Hangover solved."

"Marie Catrib's, East Hills. The darling of East Hills, Marie Catrib's was started by Marie and her son and she promptly became everyone's mom. Every meal at Marie's feels like a family experience, and with everything made from scratch daily and lots of options for meat-eaters and vegans alike, it's a favorite spot for the whole neighborhood. If the usual hour-wait for a table isn't your bag (it is worth it), you can grab something from their delicatessen counter to go."

"Wild Bunch, East Hills. You can't go here, since this is a private club. But it's such a landmark and origin of local legends that it's worth even a walk by. Sometimes the door is open and you can sneak a glimpse of a pool table or the biker gang that resides here. Rare bird."

"Pickwick Tavern, East Hills. One of the oldest bars in Grand Rapids, the Pickwick has been a staple in this neighborhood for over 75 years. Despite it's somewhat unwelcoming vibe, the staff in friendly, the drinks are strong and you can buy a bag of potato chips for snacking. BTW it's cash only. We hear that during happy hour you can pre-purchase drinks so you can enjoy drinks on sale all night! We haven't done it yet, but it's worth a try."

"The Winchester, East Hills. With the feel of a classic pub in a modern setting, this is our favorite spot of grab a bloody mary on the weekend, or a pint and some snacks cozied up to the bar. Hands down the best patio in the city, we encourage summer day drinking here. The menu changes frequently and is best when sharing small plates with friends."

"Donkey Taqueria, East Hills. Housed in a former service station, this taco joint has some of the best guacamole we've every had, not to mention the tacos. Stop in for lunch and dinner any day, or brunch on the weekends. But whenever you come in, be sure to sample their extensive selection of tequilas."

"Brewery Vivant, East Hills. This neighborhood brewery is housed in a former funeral home, and features Belgian style beers and hearty food. Enjoy one of their mainstay beers, or get adventurous with a seasonal. The cheekily named Big Red Coq is a favorite of ours, and the duck nachos are worth the nap you'll need afterward."

"Maru Sushi, East Hills. A great place if you're in the mood for some boogee sushi. Their creative take on sushi is sun for a night out, and their desserts are really excellent. If the weather is nice, sit out on their patio and take in the bustling street."

"Cakabakery, Eastown. This adorable boutique bakery shines at making desserts for special events. Cakes, cupcakes, cheesecake and cookies—even vegan and gluten-free options are all made in the cutest Eastown building shaped like a windmill."

"Wilcox Park, Eastown. Need a little fresh air? Wilcox Park rolls out the green carpet with a playground, tennis and basketball courts, community yoga classes and tons of green space. We go to watch the squirrels feast on acorns and chatter at every single living thing that saunters by."

"Terra, Eastown. The only farm-to-table restaurant featuring a wood-fired oven named Bernise. Terra takes full advantage of Michigan's farms, breweries, distilleries and vineyards, delivering seasonal menus and a happy hour that's the cat's pajamas."

"Bistro Bella Vita, Heartside. If you want a consistently delicious and more upscale dining experience Bistro is definitely the place to go. Located next to Van Andel Arena, they offer farm-to-table homestyle Mediterranean dishes, brick oven pizzas, and patio dining."

"Dodds Record Shop, Heartside. Dodds is practically a downtown Grand Rapids historical landmark. It is the oldest running record shop in Michigan, and has recently been cleaned up and organized by its new owners. It might be a hole in the wall but when you step inside, it's jam packed with vintage records and character."

"HopCat, Heartside. If you like beer, HopCat offers 49 taps, as well as monthly tappings, and a 250-bottle list of beers. They also have a great food menu consisting of crazy good bar food like Crack Fries. We highly recommend it."

"Parliament The Boutique, Heartside. Parliament offers a carefully picked selection of goods from local makers. You can find anything from ceramics to satchels to a sleepy orange cat. The only downside is they're only open 3 days a week (Thursday-Saturday)."

"Rockwell Republic, Heartside. Hip, high-ceilinged hangout with great $6 happy hour sushi specials and cocktails. In the summer, enjoy urban outdoor deck seating. The food is an American/Asian fusion and is made with local ingredients from Mrs. Lee’s Oriental Market, Otto’s Chicken Farm, Nantucket Bakery and more."

"Slows BBQ, Heartside. Located in the Downtown Market, Slows has sandwiches, meat by the pound, several delicious sides and dozens of Michigan based beers on tap. Try the Yardbird sandwich, it's our favorite."

"UICA, Heartside. The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts is a great experience for cinephiles and the art house cinema crowd. The underground theater offers reasonably priced concessions, dinner/movie specials and free gallery admission with each movie ticket purchase."

"Vertigo Music, Heartside. Vertigo has a huge selection of new and used vinyls and CDs, but you can also find a selection of cassette tapes, DVDs and Blu-Rays. Known for throwing parties on Record Store day featuring local bands and Founder's beer."

"Woosah Outfitters, Heartside. Hand crafted art and apparel with designs based around woodcuts and the outdoors. Each product is handmade here in Grand Rapids and each run is a limited edition."

"Fulton Street Cemetery, Heritage Hill Midtown. The oldest cemetery in Grand Rapids (1838) Fulton Street Cemetery is the resting place of some of the city’s original pioneers and philanthropists. Names you might know? John Ball (of John Ball Zoo and grave marked by a giant boulder) and Joel Guild (the first non-native settler in Grand Rapids). With a heavy tree canopy and a dirt road winding through the middle, this park is a perfect escape for a slightly-creepy but serene solo walk. On occasion, the city holds free walking tours of the cemetery led by a local historian but check first before you make plans the hours can be mysterious."

"The Leonard at Logan, Heritage Hill Midtown. If you grew up in 102-year-old mansion, you'll know what to expect from the Leonard at Logan. If not - well, imagine the warm delicious breakfast and free laundry you got at home, except, in a 102-year-old mansion. A 12-minute walk from downtown Grand Rapids, this bed and breakfast offers eight guest rooms (private and detached baths), an expansive continental breakfast on weekdays, 24/7 snack options and a full, customized gourmet breakfast on the weekend. "Midtown Green Park, Heritage Hill Midtown. At the corner of Eastern and Fountain, Midtown Green Park bridges the Heritage Hill and Midtown neighborhoods in the city. It's a small, flat, open green space that many of the neighbors use as an extension of their own yards. There are a few small grills to cook out in the Southwest corner, and a classic wrought iron arched sign welcoming you to the neighborhood. If you're looking to relax for a few hours in the Summer away from the main streets, Midtown Green is perfect for reading a book or catching some sun."

"Blue Door Antiques & Elements, Heritage Hill Midtown. If you like a good treasure hunt you will find it at Blue Door Antiques & Elements. Blue Door is light and bright, with lots of refurbished antique furniture and chandeliers adding to the ambiance. Start on the first floor, sorting through their selection of old keys, vintage pocket watches, and brightly-painted iron wall hooks. Then, wander your way into the basement to find more housewares as well as old wooden windows, vintage door handles, or eclectic lawn ornaments."

"Meyer May House, Heritage Hill Midtown. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Meyer May House is a prairie style design with American Indian accents. Have no idea what that means? That’s ok - free tours led by volunteer docents start every 90-minutes. Whether you’re an architecture buff or just looking for a fun, free activity, visiting this house is nothing short of fascinating. Originally built for a Grand Rapids clothier, Meyer May, it was purchased by furniture giant Steelcase in the 90's and fully restored, including the property next door which became the visitor's center. Even every piece of furniture and art was made specifically for Meyer May by Wright, as well as several architectural heavy-hitters of the time. We can't suggest taking a tour enough - and it's free."

"Little Africa Cuisine, Heritage Hill Midtown. This hole-in-the-wall gem offers authentic, traditional, delicious and crazy affordable Ethiopian cuisine. The small but mighty menu offers a variety of vegan dishes. Out with friends? Order the group platter and dig in with your digits - all dishes are served with traditional injera bread and hand-cleaning bowls, without a utensil in sight. If you’re looking for personal service and more out of the ordinary than you're used to, Little Africa is it. (Pro-tip: it’s cash only, so come prepared. Also, feel free to bring your own drinks and the owner Lou will give you glasses.)"

"The Cheese Lady, Heritage Hill Midtown. If cheese is your drug of choice, welcome to heaven. Indulge in over 140 cheeses from around the globe - most are not only available for sample, but served up by the most passionate cheese-loving people you've ever met (except for you, of course.) The Cheese Lady (her name is Heather, she’s delightful), and her staff are incredibly knowledgeable, super friendly and let you taste until you find one you love. During the weekend rush, you might wait a bit - but with employees handing out samples in line, you won’t notice. And at the counter, you will never feel rushed."

"Flex City Fitness, Heritage Hill Midtown. Whether you’re just visiting or living in GR, FlexCity Fitness is a Michigan based circuit-training concept gym that combines treadmill running, cycling, and strength training into a solid 55 minute workout to burn off all those bad decisions you made last night. This studio is approachable and friendly to all levels."

"Logan's Alley, Heritage Hill Midtown. Near a string of divey, classic American bars on Michigan St, Logan’s Alley has all the features of a neighborhood pub--over 200 choices on their beer list, a great bottle selection, free popcorn (with nacho cheese, ranch, and white cheddar seasoning), bar food (think tater tots and burgers) and lotto games at each table. If you'll be in the city for a while, sign up for Logan's Mug Club - drink every beer they have and get your name on the wall (note: this can take years). Logan’s is unassuming, what you see is what you get. In the summer, the back patio is an added benefit - and it's usually crowded with Logan's-sponsored teams from the local adult softball and soccer leagues."

"Fulton St. Farmers Market, Heritage Hill Midtown. The Fulton Street Farmers Market is the oldest and largest in Grand Rapids. Newly updated and remodeled in the past couple of years, many of the vendors have been with the Market for generations, and even when the market isn't open, you can see the history by way of the dedication/donation bricks making up the main entrance. Open the first Saturday of May through the last Saturday before Christmas, during the late spring, summer, and fall, you can find some of Michigan’s best produce. Make sure you arrive early for the best selection - if the parking lot is full (which happens lots in the summer), grab a spot on Fountain, the street directly on the north-side of the market."

"Grand Butchers, Heritage Hill Midtown. Don’t let the strip mall location fool you. The Grand Butchers is one of the best options for high quality cuts of meat, poultry, specialty sausage, pork and deli items, including smoked jerky that'll challenge you to not eat the entire bag before you get home. Prices are affordable too. The Grand Butcher’s friendly staff is experienced at answering your meal prep questions, and has a charming selection of other specialty grocery items."

"Van's Pastry Shoppe, Heritage Hill Midtown. Walking into Van’s is like being transported back in time 30-years. Forget fancy-smancy overpriced hipster donuts, Van’s is all about the traditional, fried dough you grew up with, and one of the few places you can still get a donut and coffee for a buck. A family owned, Dutch bakery, Van’s has been open since the 1920’s. If you’re there early (think 6am), you’ll probably see some retired early-birds sipping coffee and playing a board game or reading the paper."

"Martha's Pizza, Heritage Hill Midtown. Part of the mini-conglomerate of deliciousness on the Lyon/Union intersection, Martha’s Pizza used to be one and the same with Nantucket Bakery. Now, the pizza shop is attached to [Martha’s Vineyard](www.onthegrid.city/grand-rapids/heritage-hill-midtown/marthas-vineyard), off of Union street. Stop here for Neopolitian style pizza that isn’t too greasy, nor too fancy. And if you're in a pinch, grab dollar slices out the door of whatever they've got made."

"Nantucket Baking Co, Heritage Hill Midtown. This place is so great, locals joke about the Martha's tax - an extra $3-5 added on to the bill than if you purchased the same items at a 'regular' grocery store (which we gladly pay for the great experience). "Duke's Bar, Heritage Hill Midtown. Duke's might have the coolest sign of all the Michigan Street bars here in Grand Rapids. Neon, zig zags, slab-serif, simple. It's the thing you'll notice first when you visit, glowing red and white. Unlike the other dives, Duke's occupies the authentic, gritty, smokey bar vibe. Not quite a sports bar, not quite a place you'll go just to eat, Duke's is the place you can go for 5 beers in a bucket that'll cost you $6 and a good chance you'll spot some tribal tattoos while you're there. You might see the occasional group of motorcycles splitting time between Duke's and the American Legion Hall across the street.At Duke's, the bartenders are cool, the jukebox is decent, and the beer is cold. If you're planning a bar crawl up Michigan, we recommend that this place is on your list."
