8 Most Haunted Restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area | Eater SF

"Libations aren’t the only spirits served at this historic Alameda restaurant. Built in 1879, the building was once Croll’s Gardens and Hotel, a venue frequented by soldiers at the nearby Alameda Naval Air Station who were about to be deployed to combat zones. Some swear their departed souls continue to make cameo appearances at their once-favorite gathering place, accounting for the sounds of mysterious laughter and ghostly apparitions in uniform seen late at night. With a cozy ambiance featuring live music, a full bar, and daily specials like cioppino, and shepherd’s pie, you can’t blame the spirits for returning." - Linda Childers

Pleasantly surprised by this gastropub-style spot! We were craving burgers and pizza and everything hit the spot. The veggie burger with a chicken sub was super tasty and the staff was really friendly. Friends loved the half-and-half pizza. Definitely feels like a hidden gem. Would come back!

I went to a lot of restaurants in Alameda and shot a couple of 1400's specials for Alameda Restaurant Week. I loved the warmth and classic atmosphere, and these are the coolest dishes I saw.

Google
we had a family gathering on the patio. there were probably around 30 guests. one wait staff took our drink orders and then meal orders. she was fabulous! the food was amazing! the patio is fenced and protected from the wind so enjoyed everything about it. highly recommend you try it out!

Google
We had the Greek pizza and garlic fries. Very delicious and large servings! Coffee was not great, but it's a bar so I would imagine cocktails are better. Looking forward to sitting in the back patio in the future.

I was pleasantly surprised at 1400 bar & grill. The outside/ inside decor looks like it could use an update, so I wasn’t expecting much from the food/ service. We decided to try this place out because of Alameda’s Restaurant week and they had the most appealing fixed menu. We ended up ordering from the menu and not going pre-fixed. I ordered the prime rib sandwich with fries and my boyfriend ordered the pulled pork sliders and poutine fries. The food was really good! I like extra crispy fries and they use quality ingredients for the sandwich. Also our server was very nice - checked-in, was accommodating. So don’t let the exterior fool you, this place is worth the visit.

Google
My wife and I stopped by for Fish and Chips and a Margarita. Everything was fantastic. The only comment I have that could make things better is, have a bottle of malt vinegar instead of that little spray bottle (I brought my own).

Google
Love. Warm cozy no frills bar with great food. The lamb pizza seemed too different not to try. It was fantastic! We will be back to try the SPAM fries- again- never seen it before, I’ll try it. Brunch looks fun and plenty of regulars so you know that gives excellent credibility. See this place again soon.

My cocktail was amazing. The Mangotini my fav and always on point. Ok I'm a huge fan of todays fish and chips. Truly decadent. Oh, and let's not talk about the homemade tartar sauce the bomb I like it a tad on the thin side so perfect for me.

Yelp
One of my most favorite restaurants. All of the staff is friendly and attentive to the customers. There's just the right balance of checking on you, but giving you the space to enjoy the company that you're with. The menu has a good balance of options, with some awesome pizza choices, Mexican dishes, and delicious classics. Great happy hour, too! Lots of delicious drink and food offerings. With the addition of the pool table and outside patio that is pet friendly, you really can't go wrong here.

Yelp
Tried this place with a couple of friends yesterday. People are friendly and nice - great service! Bar does a nice job with beers on tap and a generous glass of wine! The place is a bit grungy - needs new flooring - carpet is never a good choice in a restaurant/bar. I hear the patio is great so next time we will sit there! The food - My dining partners - loved the Ruben Sandwich - generous portions and nicely done! Comes with choice of fries - potato salad or green salad. My other dining partner had the salmon - she loved it! Salmon was not over cooked - the potatoes were excellent. Unfortunately - I ordered the special of the day - which was a french dip sandwich. I love french dip!!! This one was not great. The beef had a lot of grissle and fat in it and the meat was very over cooked. Usually these are not deal killers if the dip is good. I believe the chef doesn't know what Au Jus is. The sandwich was served with pan dirppings - a float of fat on top of the au jus coated the dipped sandwich in grease - not flavorful or appetizing. Au jus is beef broth not pan drippings. Beef broth from a can would have been better - I actually use boxed broth that I doctor up with herbs and shallots. The broth soaks the bread in goodness and makes well done beef manageable. I had to send the sandwich back - and completely lost my appetite for anything else. However - and this is huge!! I ordered potato salad with my sandwich. IT IS THE BEST potato salad I have ever had!! Lots of crunchy celery not too much onion - dressing is great - potatoes soft but not mushy - I will go back to 1400 just for that potato salad!!

Yelp
1400 Webster St Alameda, CA 94501 ( Cross St- Central Ave) It was Sunday, March 23, and the end of Alameda's Restaurant Week. I decided to drop by and grab a pizza to go, and give this place a second chance. I ordered the "The Alameata" pizza. I was told it's about a medium pizza, enough for 2-3 people. OMG! Pizza the way I like it! The Alameata Pizza is a balanced mix of pepperoni, sausage, and bacon with a thick blanket the cheese. The kind of melted cheese that streams off the pie. Beautiful strands of melted hot cheese. Thick and gooey. When you pull off a slice, hardly anything falls off. All the flavors are just right. The Alameata is a medium pizza, and it's about 14-15" wide. I asked for original crust. It was soft, and lightly crispy. I will be back! The other reviews are correct, the food is 5-stars here. "1400 Bar & Grill" is located in the 146 year old historic Croll Building.

Yelp
Came here on a weekday evening and was quite surprised at how busy it was. Had heard really good things, so wanted to try for myself. Food and Drinks: - Cucumber Jalapeño Margarita: I've had plenty of cucumber jalapeño margaritas that have been delicious - refreshing with a kick of spice. This drink tasted like jalapeño juice and tequila only. It wasn't refreshing at all and it was honestly quite a bad drink. I could only have 2 sips before I gave up. You can also see the one of us got cucumbers in our margarita and one did not. The drinks are also different colors. - French fries: these looked and tasted like they sat in the deep fryer for at least 5 minutes past when they should have been taken out. They were a dark brown and were very crispy. If you're looking for a strong and cheap drink, I can see the appeal to this establishment. Ambiance was like a sorts bar as there was a football game on and people at the bar watching. Not crazy loud, but still pretty loud. There are tables for larger groups and smaller groups.

Yelp
I have seen this place for decades and never once thought of going in. I was with friends and we were walking around so decided to give it a go. None of us have ever been inside. We were very pleased. Clean, spacious and ample selection of food. The span fries were killer but the Wings were a bit dry, sliders were very flavorful. I had an old Fashioned it Was just OK nothing memorable. Service was Awesome As Was the bartender. This was a neighborhood bar that was inviting with nice people Working there. Give it a go.

Yelp
We came into town with a group of 12 without dinner plans. Found 1400 Bar &Grill and we were so happy we did. Not only did they accommodate our group last minute, but the food and service were fabulous! I am horrible with names or I would give a shout out to our waitress. I would highly recommend you include 1400 Bar &Grill when you are in the neighborhood.

Yelp
It feels familiar and homey here, with the antique bar, the warm and welcoming people, and the solid meals. Good memories coming with family and friends from over the years.

Yelp
Maybe I ordered the wrong item, but the burger and fries were mediocre at best. Fries too crispy and overcooked. Lots of people in there, so it's popular. Nice ambiance. Habit or In n' Out are far superior and that's rare to say that fast food tastes better.

Yelp
We stopped by this cozy local bar/grill for Brunch on a Sunday. Easy street parking if you come before 11am, though I can definitely see that the parking situation can be difficult as it gets closer to lunch. We were greeted promptly by the waitress and seated quickly. I do think there may be a bit of an understaffing issue, as our waitress was basically taking orders for the whole restaurant. Waving the waitress down to take our order was a bit of a challenge. With that being said, You can clearly see that this was a local watering hole that is loved by the community as everyone that walked in was on a first name basis with the staff. As for the food, it was hot and delicious. We had the Greek Veggie omelette, shrimp and grits, and the spam fries. Their shrimp and grits was fantastic, with the grits being made with cheddar cheese and jalapeños, the grits can also be ordered on their own as a vegetarian side. The spam fries were salty, savory, and crunchy, worth trying once, though it reminded me of County Fair food. Overall would recommend for the food and atmosphere but understand that service may be a bit slow if the restaurant is busy.

Yelp
Our neighborhood bar and grill...and we love them! Their back patio is the best part. They're so kid friendly - both inside and outdoor seating. But outside has fire pits, friendly crowds and plenty of space for the kiddos to run around (attended of course.) The menu is huge with pizzas always a hit, as well as their seafood. At least one of us orders their fish and chips every time we go and they even had a prime rib special the last time we were there. Spam fries are also another fun order. Drinks are standard but good. They used to have a spiked hot cider that I loved and the beer selection is big. Also, if you're there right at 5PM, make sure to take advantage of their whiskey special. IYKYK.

Yelp
The food deserves 5 stars but the service maybe 3 stars. I would've loved to give this restaurant five stars but the service/waitress we had did not pay much attention to our table. We had to get up a few times to go get more napkins and silverware and so did the couple next to us. We were going to sit outside on the patio, but unfortunately, no staff came out to take our order so we ended up going inside to eat. We ordered the spam fries and pulled pork sliders for appetizers. The spam fries were really good and the pulled pork sliders were good as well. We also ordered the Alameata pizza, it was good, crunchy crust, and the right amount of toppings. I did order two drinks from the bar. Really enjoyed the 1400 colada. My second drink was the Plank Tai and this drink was strong & good. My husband asked for a Coke soda and got a Pepsi instead. They carry Pepsi products instead of Coke. We will definitely try this place again and hopefully the service improves. I would love to enjoy an evening out on the patio and have a few drinks and some appetizers next time. Street parking around the restaurants and they do have meters active during the day. Unless you can find a parking in a nearby parking lot.

Yelp
Been coming here for years !!!! My go to is the Greek wings and original buffalo with half Caesar salad and fries !!!! Yummy ! Everyone is always so friendly service is always quick ! It's my comfort spot for any time of the day . It has a cozy home feel to it :)

Yelp
It's been a few years since I tried here again. Never a good time, food or friendly service. Since Chris and Christian left(love the Boathouse) why bother? Exactly. Yet I tried. Ordered a Margherita pizza. Does anyone know what that should be, look like, taste like? Mozzarella, tomato sauce and basil, 9/10 times. This? Raw sliced, flavorless tomatoes on a cheese pizza. I'm floored at the lack of even trying to make it look like a Margherita pizza. Let alone taste decent. I know, owners have said before when service and food was bad, "don't come back then". Okay, you win.

Yelp
came for dinner with a group after a work event. they were very accommodating for our large group and put half the tables together so we can sit together. I heard a lot of great things about their spam fries and it did not disappoint! also got their fish burger with a side salad. everything was delicious!

Yelp
I like the back patio and the general vibe of this spot. Came last weekend with a burger craving--unfortunately the burger was super dry, not seasoned enough, and it seemed like they split the patty in half when cooking to test if it was done (causing the whole thing to fall apart). Will give them another chance, but it was a bit of a disappointment...

Christian L.

Yelp
first time there today and the staff was really nice. Props to all the staff for being kind and taking my order despite not being open yet. Also, I had the pesto pasta with chicken and it tastes great. The inside is pretty cool with all their decorations and bobble heads. Would come again
google avatar

Tom L.

Yelp
Best staff, best drinks! Try the wing combo, lamb burger or whatever special Benedict they have on weekend mornings (salmon, filet mignon, prime rib...)!

Yelp
It felt like home when we walked into 1400 Bar and Grill to enjoy our Sunday Funday. The staff was respectful, informative, and kind. The Plack Tie drink made me feel like I was on the beach in the Bahamas's again. We finished our experience off by sharing Spam fries, fish and chips and meatloaf and mash potatoes. We were in heaven!!! This is a must try when you are on Alameda Island. Cheers!

Yelp
1400 B&G is located at the old Krolls location on the corner of Webster and Central. Likely a historically significant building with an old wooden bar. 1400 has both indoor and outdoor dining with large Flat Screens in the restaurant. Good for watching Bay Area sports teams. We sat at the last table outdoors even though we had made a reservation. The table seemed like an afterthought and was off to the side. We were seated with half of us arriving early and the other half on time. Water was brought out but not enough glasses or settings. Eventually rectified. The group ordered drinks, entrees (Meat Loaf, Fish and Chips, Pork Belly Sliders, Salad, Lamb Burger, etc.. we ate it all up and the food appeared to please everyone. I particularly liked the Fish and Chips, fries ok but Fried Fish was crunchy on the outside and nice and tender in the inside. The spritzer bottle of Malt Vinegar caught us by surprise as it looked more like hand sanitizer. Overall, good food while the service could be a little better. 20% mandatory gratuity on parties of six or more, maybe that's why our server didn't need to smile or pay much attention to us.
google avatar

Yelp
Splitted the blackened fish - large enough for Teo share. Tasty!! Wings excellent! Crispy . Not overly dry. Service- people came out right away and greeted us We sat outside in the patio under parasol on labor day Afternoon. Quiet with jimmy buffet in the backgeound

rose

Yelp
The service was amazing and very warming. Made you feel like home. The patio was beautiful. Suitable for kids and fun enough for adults.

Sara S.

Yelp
It's too bad this neighborhood bar has gotten so expensive. Yes, prices are going up with everything but unfortunately, it's not worth it here. The service isn't great anymore and there's often a strange smell which makes you not very hungry anyway. The drinks are....something. Strange really. Stick with beer and play it safe. Bummed this used to be a fun neighborhood bar but it's overpriced for the quality now.

Yelp
My wife and I love this place! They have amazing spam fries and other foods! The drinks are really good too! It's a pretty relaxing vibe with choice of indoor or outdoor seating. Service is acceptable. Definitely recommend!

Eugenia J.

Yelp
My go-to spot in Alameda! They treat you like family and the food and drinks are always spot-on (the Greek wings and the chili are very tasty!) And on a sunny day the patio can't be beat!

Jonathan K.

Yelp
Excellent place to bring a dog. They were happy to have our pups and promptly gave them ice water which was very appreciated due to the heat. Service was excellent, pizza was delicious and well priced. We will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Great service, ambiance, food and drinks. The local customers hang at the bar and are extremely friendly. Great atmosphere and vibe. Located in a prime area of Alameda, walkable to everything.

Yelp
Waiters, bartenders, owner are all so welcoming and this Margarita and pizza are delicious.

Yelp
Love the pizza and the 1.05 drink you can get between 5:00 & 5:15. That's right folks you read it right. You get 15 minutes to order the drink special at a mere $1.05!

Dina L.

Yelp
Yummy food and tasty drinks. Accompanied by friendly service is a win. Would go back and definitely recommend to friends

Yelp
Former Crolls is now 1400. ( Well, it has been for years ) Their food is fantastic and the owners are almost always on site, and they seem to care that patrons have an enjoyable experience. The service is excellent and friendly. Give this place a try for lunch, they have great daily specials.

Ted S.

Yelp
I give it 5 stars as I am a Huge fan of their version of a Mai Thai (aka Plakthai), named after the owner). He is a great guy and created a recipe that is better than the OG at Trader Vic's!!!

Yelp
Unfortunately my food experiences hasn't been great with this location which is too bad for a local restaurant.

Yelp
First time here. We waited a few minutes to be seated outside no problem We got seated we waited for 30 minutes before leaving. Not one time did the waiter approach us, or even acknowledge us!!!!! We saw the waiter walking passed us about 15 times serving other customers water, giving customers drinks and food. Picking up empty bottles of beer. We were the only NON WHITE customers. I can't help but feel some kind of way. I hate having to "go there" but it is what it is!!!! Even a customer who was sitting at the table next to us mentioned HEY YOU GUYS ARE STILL WAITING. Like if that doesn't speak volumes I don't know what does. For other customers to NOTICE the fact that we have not been attended to. We walked out But not before telling an older gentleman who worked there what happened Then the waiter came to try and defend his blatant act of horrible customer service and discrimination. It took all of me to keep my composure. He claimed he didn't "see us". I said how could you. NOT SEE US. You served the people behind us and to the side of us. BUT OKK. Well WE SEE YOU. I have waited tables before and IT IS YOUR JOB TO SEE CUSTOMER AND ACKNOWLEDGE customers. So don't go there. Furthermore there was only 4 other tables 2 of which had food order and 2 of which had drink orders only. MISS MEE YOU DIDNT SEE US. BUT GUESS WHATT WE SAW YOU!!!!!!!

Yelp
I love this place! The spam fries are my favorite! The owner recognized me the last time I was in. I brought my friends with me after the SF Giants 10k. He seated us right away. They tried the Siam fries and loved them! This is my go to after that race but I need to go more often bc it's such a neat place to grab a cocktail and some food. Breakfast is my favorite there!

Yelp
Awful service, terrible menu and food. Have been here many times over the years hoping for different. The menu makes no sense. I think this is actually a place that makes all their money on alcohol and the food is an overpriced and neglected afterthought. The only thing thing that's changed over the ten years I've tried repeatedly to like is the prices have gotten higher and the service has gotten worse. So unnecessarily rude and inattentive. Why? Today there were literally two tables and our server couldn't be bothered to be polite or even refill our drinks. Nor could she manage to not have the most ridiculous attitude even though we kept ignoring her rude statements and adolescent hostility. Seriously not necessary. Tipped anyway but smh how hard it is to find common courtesy. Then the food. This menu has barely changed for ten years. It honestly is difficult to find something to order if you are not smashed on alcohol. Nothing is a speciality. There is no theme to the menu so it is literally a random list of food that doesn't go together and should come from very different restaurants. Are they Greek? A few items over the years seem like someone here cooks Greek food. They have a lamb burger, and an entree Greek salad. But that's it. Then maybe they're a burger place? You can get a few burgers or hot wings. Then a part of the menu looks like they are trying to be higher end dining, so there are some full steak meals. But this is a jack of all trades master of nine menu. These are meals chosen by somebody who likes each dish. Not for the general public. Whether you're trying to sell yourself on a chopped meat salad, or bland edamame, or greasy polenta cakes, or a random New York steak (?), or pork sliders, this place disappoints. This menu fails to create a singular dining experience with any good flavors to come back for. The food feels like failed Applebees bar food, and the selection of options (so strangely the same after a decade), looks like what you'd get if if you just picked a few random items off of a very different restaurant menus and did them badly. Greasy not well seasoned, kind of bad bar food, kind of Applebees entrées, kind of like bland cafeteria. But with very bad service to bring it to you. If you want to come sit inside and drink-- just drink-- and then not leave because you're too busy drinking, then maybe this place is for you. I really want to like this restaurant. I like their back patio. I love the history, it could be something that's actually good. Why not update this menu and chef, and provide quality food that is not phoned in? Why not hire servers who try to make this a pleasant experience for diners? Wishing for change in my neighborhood.

Yelp
We had a party of 6 and drove two other nearby brunch spots on a Sunday morning. Everything else had lines out the door, so we decided to come to 1400 Bar & Grill. There was no wait. Plenty of open tables. Parking was a little dicey - had to park about 2 blocks away in a residential area. The waitress diligently took our order, but the order was not diligently delivered. There were lots of missteps and little errors. This was missing a side, the fries weren't done well, and things were swapped. We had to ask for a side of ketchup twice. I always like to give places the benefit of the doubt as being too busy to handle orders correctly, but this place appeared overstaffed for a quiet morning with 2/3 of the place empty. The owner was wandering around as we ate. Probably will pass on coming again, but was glad I got to try this place once.

Yelp
The pizza used to be good. Something happened in the last couple months. It is now awful

Yelp
I honestly don't know what happened to this place. I used to live in Alameda and came here somewhat regularly for over 10 years before the pandemic but the last few times it has been different. Just before COVID, they stopped serving the fries with eyes which I can understand because little whole deep-fried fish may not be everyone's cup of tea. I loved them though, sad to see them go but it was nice to get real seafood. Onion rings used to be the best. Now they are too greasy and cooked so that the crust doesn't stay on. Osso bucco is a meager portion now. Used to be filling. The turkey dinner sandwich and lamb burger are gone. I used to order those a lot and was fond of them. The new buns on their sandwiches are mostly air now. The fries are not worth mentioning. I used to love their blackened fish sandwich. What I got on Sunday was a tiny piece of fish 1/4" thick max and it was too small for the bun. Several bites with no fish and the seasoning was lackluster. My boyfriend's poblano burger was not much better. They used to pile them high with the shoestring onions and instead, his buns touched. The patties at Nations down the street look better. My margarita was supposed to have mango puree in it but it didn't. Not sure it had any triple sec in it either. The waitress dropped off the food but never asked if we needed anything, I needed hot sauce but couldn't track her down. By the time a different one came over, we were done eating and just ordered pints. No more Fieldwork though. I went in on the night before Memorial Day expecting it to be packed and except for the usual barflies watching sports, it was pretty empty. I think that was a sign. The prices have gone WAY up too. The taste, service, menu selection, and portions went down. A tale too common as almost every favorite place of mine devolves or disappears. I gave it an extra star for the memory of what it used to be because I won't be going back.

Yelp
I love this place! I've been coming here since I moved to Alameda 3 years ago. They have a patio outside so I can bring my pup, which always a plus. During Covid 1400 has traffic flowing one way, hand sanitizer when you come in, tables apart from one another, everyone wearing masks, and when you get to your table directions to keep your mask on until you are done ordering. Everything is clear and easy to follow. We walked here last night and were seated quickly and had drinks in our hands within 3 minutes. We placed our order and enjoyed the nice weather while we waited. I ordered the reuben and my partner ordered the house made veggie patty. My reuben came out hot and looked as good as it tasted - AMAZING! My partner's veggie patty was full of veggies and had great texture. We usually order pizza - which is made in house and also delicious but we were glad we tried something new. I would definitely order the reuben again!

Yelp
Look no further for the best service, food, and vibe of Alameda at 1400! Yani truly as an owner had us captivated over the Benedict of the Bay! My father had a chorizo Benedict and myself the classic .. just epic!! Thank you !!

Rozalynd M.

Yelp
This place is a gem! It's a great bar with an impressive staff, and friendly regulars. The first time we stopped in, we went for the standards: wings and fries. While having our drinks the guy that pulled up to the stool next to us ordered the spam fries along with something else. We had seen them on the menu but weren't sure about ordering them. He shared his order with us! Not only are they served in a spam can with chopsticks, but they come with 2 amazing aolies: wasabi and chipotle. We were hooked! Hubby discovered his favorite Scotch (Laphroiag 10yr) here. We have since come in to get the Alameata Pizza (big enough for 2) made with house made sauce and sausage, pepperoni and bacon; heavily topped for $22! Tonight I got the meatloaf and hubby got the Prime Rib. Don't sleep on this place! If you are in Alameda, come through! If you are in the Bay, this is a destination!

Yelp
So I ordered here for the first time tonight for short pick up order. Listen, if you advertise that your pork belly slider has BBQ and Cole slaw on it - PLEASE MAKE SURE IT DOES! One small piece of garish on a horrible piece of fat without a HINT of BBQ sauce on a sweet bun - doesn't make it better. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!

Yelp
Great local bar and grill to visit. I had a Greek salad and Spam Fry's, yes Spam Fry's. Staff was super friendly and the owner touched the table a few times to say hi and then tell the story about the Spam fry's after I asked. All in all a nice place to grab lunch or dinner and watch a game.

Yelp
Had breakfast here recently. Nice spot. Great decor with old school pictures. great food and excellent service. I ordered the Corned Beef Hash. It was perfectly seasoned with green peppers and onions served with seasoned sautéed potatoes. My husband had the pancakes and bacon. He loved it. Pancakes were hot and fluffy and the bacon was thick cut (I believe). The owners stopped by to say hello. Very friendly and courteous staff. Can't wait to go back for Prime Rib.

Yelp
I came here for a bday party and didn't realize it is the old Croll's. 1400 is a pizza and burger place located on the corner of Webster & Central in Alameda. The name refers to its address on Webster. I ordered two orders of buffalo wings ($16/dozen). Others ordered burgers. The wings were very good. They were meaty, crunchy and spicy. I had a nice sweat going after eating all of them (no one in my group wanted any). My friends said the burgers were really good as were the fries. I think the prices were around $15. I also saw that the pizzas were $22, but I didn't see how large they were. Regarding the ambiance, the overall space was quite large. There is the main area that includes an old school bar with high tables and regular tables, a take out area for pizza, and the outside patio, where we were. The outside area was really large with long tables, adirondack chairs and a fire pit. It worked really well for our large group: 4 Stars. Likewise, the service was good. We only had one waitress, but she was on it, and the food arrived quickly. Any special requests for condiments, et al, were handled quickly: 4 Stars. I don't come to Alameda much now that my parents are gone. However, I'll have to remember 1400 when I want good food, inexpensive beer, and nice service.
