Yelp
The absolute best Mexican place in DC and you cannot convince me otherwise. Being from SoCal, I feel that I understand good Mexican food and what it takes to make a good taco. The food is all so fresh and even when you have to line up in the entry way for your table, you know that it will be worth it. The worst part is watching other people get their food, but it is always worth the wait. They are great about changing my drinks to have a different liquor than tequila and the chips keep you filled while you wait for your food. The staff is friendly and efficient and keeps you coming back here.

Yelp
I recently went on a date here and enjoyed the atmosphere! It was national taco day and they had a great deal with tacos being $2.50 ($3.50 for seafood) and margaritas for $8. The servers were also friendly and attentive. I do wish the protein themselves had a little more flavor, but overall the tacos were enjoyable especially with added salsa. I could tell the ingredients were fresh and homemade. I will definitely be back to try other menu items.

Yelp
We've been eating in house or takeout from here for years. So great. Birria is fantastic! Pork based tacos can be pretty greasy. Salsas are fantastic. Love the new rojo.

Yelp
Best tacos in the city! I will always love this place! Any location but the original location is the best. Some of the best birria in the city! Great service!

Yelp
I was craving tacos, so I opted to visit this establishment for a late lunch on a Friday afternoon. The restaurant was nearly deserted around 2 p.m., allowing me to be seated immediately. I selected a trio of tacos: the pulpo, camaron, and tinga poblana. Each taco was presented on handmade tortillas alongside fresh vegetables. While the pulpo was flavorful, it was slightly salty. The shrimp was delicious, and I enjoyed the juicy tinga poblana with its subtle spice. The complimentary chips were a pleasant addition. While the accompanying salsa was decent, I was not fond of the diluted avocado sauce. I paired the tacos with the mango agua del día. Although its consistency was sweeter and thicker than I had anticipated, the authentic flavor of mango was evident and enjoyable. I came hungry and left satisfied!

Yelp
Solid steak burritos! The green hot sauce Is where it's at. I've been here many times and quality of service and food is consistently good.

Yelp
I heard about this place and how good it was. I've eaten next door but a friend said this place was better. It was! The Mexican mojito was a perfect mix of ingredients. The octopus and shrimp tacos were preectly grilled with fresh cilantro and onion. All of my tacos were good with a splash of a secret sauce with a little bite. They don't come with any extra salsa or anything. You probably don't need it. These are about the best tacos I've had in the city. The service was great. Very attentive and the food came out quick. Ambiance reminded me of a Mexican taco joint. A must try.

Yelp
We stopped in here for a snack before going somewhere else for dinner with visiting family. Which felt ridiculous, but then I had the mango margarita with mezcal, and I was so glad we stopped. It was super fruity, smoky, and had a tajin rim. I would drink it again. And again. The tacos were just the right size to be able to order a sample of many kinds. We had the mushroom, bistec, carnitas, and el pastor, all of which came with a fun twist - pickled onions on the carnitas, guacamole on the mushrooms, etc. They were super tasty. And the shells were grilled enough to be chewy but also strong enough to not fall apart. The ambience is typical tiny Mexican spot with the kitchen right behind the bar, and lots of colorful paint and decorations. The staff was very efficient. This is a new must visit spot next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
when I say I'm going Gods work I mean I'm finding the only REAL Mexican food in DC - the most inconspicuous looking joint in columbia heights has brought my taste buds to new heights. I closed my eyes and I was back on college spring break knee deep in mexico sand and kissing frat boys. - to knock my qualms out first, they charge $3 for chip refills and the chip servings for the table are what the back of the LYING corn chip bags say is a serving size. as well they started cooking onions somehow so intensely that our entire table had to go outside because our eyes were burning like we were the chefs ourselves - okay. birria tacos were perfectly crisped on the outside while still holding that perfect juicy meat and cheese ratio. soft decadent bites with the perfect outer crunch - the steak wasn't too chewy and tasted fresh off the grill. the shrimp tacos had this amazing slight spicy sauce under the perfectly seasoned hot shrimp. - the people around us ordered the fajitas, burrito, and chiliquiles and our mouths were on the floor. they looked INSANE. I shall be back for that as a non taco lover in general the massive portions of assorted fajita meats (3 different proteins per portion) for decent prices had me sold for a return - PSA the "skinny margarita" is just tequila over ice with a ZEST of lime. however. ya know. that got the job done if you know what I mean.

Yelp
This place was amazing! We tried the chilaquiles with Al pastor and my mouth is literally watering just thinking about them! We weren't too hungry but just wanted something to snack on and this was the perfect dish for that. Wish we had tried more because I'm sure it would not disappoint. Service was nice and friendly and the ambiance was very relaxed. Parking was easy too. Would love to try more of their dishes!

Yelp
Went to try the infamous chapulin/grasshopper tacos but they didn't have it! :/ tacos were not bad, I wish they were crispier or stronger, perhaps double tortilla tacos are in order? everyone recommended the green sauce highly but I don't know what's special about thin spicy guacamole Wish the tres leches cake was bigger it's so yummy.

Yelp
Amazing experience. Staff was quick, helpful, friendly and most importantly...the food was delicious and affordable!! $8 lemon drop? Sign me up! Bonus: the take out containers are microwave safe & of course the enchiladas tasted even better the next day!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a must-stop when you are in D.C. I try to come here for a "snack" when I have dinner in D.C. The pricing is reasonable and the food is authentically delicious. The service is excellent and the decorations are legit.

Yelp
Really liked the feel of this place. Good menu with a lot of different options. We started with margaritas and they were more sweet and I preferred it. Super tasty and well mixed with the tequila. Our entrees we got an assortment of tacos and fajitas. I got Al pastor, carnitas, and chorizo. I honestly thought they all tasted somewhat similar and they were pretty oily and the oil saturated the plate when I would eat them. The fajita was good but we could've gotten one or two more tortillas for how much meat they give you. Overall fair prices for the amount of food and we left full!
google avatar

Kenneth K.

Yelp
The tacos are amazing and very authentic! My wife and I ordered from here on DoorDash and got the Hongos, Pescados, Nopales, Salmon, Lengua, Barbacoa, and Bistec Tacos. We look forward to both ordering from here and dining here in the future.

Yelp
Sooo good. I want to bathe in the salsa. The chips were excellent. Guac was delicious with a subtle hint of spice. Everything was fresh, well-seasoned, and reasonable prices. Nice amount of brisket in the birria. Place itself is a bit small but it still has an inviting atmosphere. Good, friendly service.
google avatar

Jackie W.

Yelp
I picked up tacos here to go, and the food was incredible. I cannot wait to come here and get fresh food. Loved the quesadilla and the guac. The drinks were also delicious. I cannot wait to try more foods on the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved our experience. The tacos were delicious and very flavorful, not too expensive. They were also having happy hour all night (Thursday) which was unexpected and margaritas were $8. The margaritas were fresh with lime juice and did the trick. Definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I am still thinking of these birria tacos. So juicy and perfect! I could eat these every day! Servers were nice and quick and they have both outside and inside tables This has probably been some of the better tacos I've had since moving to DC so I would say it's a must try.

Yelp
I've heard and saw rave reviews for this place and was excited to check it out. When I arrived, I stopped into the restroom, but there was no toilet paper. An employee went to look for some, but came back with napkins because there wasn't any toilet paper in the restaurant. That was a first. There was plenty of seating available inside and outside, and we opted for an outdoor table in the shade. I ordered guacamole to start, which was good, but it doesn't come with chips. The first round of chips for the table is free, but it's a tiny serving. On to the drinks. The first 2 drinks I was interested in, they were out of ingredients so weren't able to make them. I went with the La Pina, which was pretty to look at, but tasted extremely watered down. My friend got a regular margarita but upgraded the tequila. She was asking the price differences for the different tequila upgrades, and the server kept guessing because he said he didn't want to go inside and check the system. When he put her order in, he came back saying the tequila he told us was available, was actually out of stock so she had to make another choice. They also don't have straws, so my friend ran across to 7-eleven to grab some for our cocktails. For the tacos we got shrimp, chicken, steak, and carnitas. They weren't bad, but the tortillas were so greasy I literally had a puddle on my plate after.

Evelyn E.

Yelp
The Birria Torta and Micheladas were absolutely delicious!! Will be coming back! The server was very attentive and the seating inside has air conditioning.

Yelp
We came on a Wednesday around 11:30, easy to get a table. Its hard finding great Mexican food in an area where there really aren't that many people making authentic recipes. While this place had all the charm of being our long searched for taco spot given that they serve handmade tortillas, we left disappointed with our meals. We ordered a variety of tacos. Bistec, pulpo, al pastor, carnitas, nopal, los norteños. Los norteños were the best because they had bistec, chorizo, nopales, and a mole on them. The sauce really pulled them together. All the rest were not very flavorful --and the Al Pastor, while having a good adobo, was clearly not from a trompo/ made on a spit. Why is that so hard to find on this side of the states? The tortillas were hard and slightly cold (not fresh, despite being hand made. Ok, fair, since they probably buy or make them in bulk for the restaurant, but they only last so long in their prime condition..) The table salsas were quite good. We preferred the green salsa. The service was ok, they were attentive at first and then hard to find midway through the meal. Will we come back? Maybe - since, again, there are hardly any taco spots in the DMV. Will we be excited for them? Not really

Yelp
Quick and efficient. My wife saw them on Tik Tok and we decided to give them a shot. We walked in on a Saturday afternoon and were quickly seated. The waitress was nice and friendly and cracked a few jokes about my food likes. The complimentary chips and Salsa were DELICIOUS and I don't usually like/eat salsa. They were so good I asked for a second helping. The food came out piping hot which was GREAT, but it definitely wasn't enough. We ordered the following: Birria De Res - extremely hot but tasty and flavorful. Shrimp Taco's - 2 shrimp with lettuce and sauce Steak Taco - I do wish this wasn't cooked so tough Goat Taco- I liked this one. Carnitas - probably my favorite All in all, it was a cool trip. Not enough food for me so I can't say if I'd go back but not bad at all.

Yelp
I've been here quite a few times and I would consider it my go-to spot for tacos. Very fast service, speedy and attentive staff, and great food. I normally stick with the tacos (I have not eaten their other main food items). Their churros are very good as well!
google avatar

Donna-Marie T.

Yelp
This place is really authentic in feel but has changed in flavor in the past few years. The flavors use to be very authentic but had been watered down presumably to accommodate the neighborhood. My favorite is the pulpo taco. Service is really great.
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
If you're expecting something fancy, keep it moving. If you're looking for a hole-in-the-wall with amazing, authentic Mexican food, this is the place for you. The food was good, although I got the birria tacos and thought the tacos were small. Customer service was very good, and I liked the decor inside. This place gets a lot of business, and I would definitely recommend giving it a try.
google avatar

Steven Z.

Yelp
The tortas here are massive and very tasty at an affordable price. The cubana is my favorite for it's mix of fried chicken and ham. Tacos are okayish, meat was fine but the tortilla wasn't that great

Yelp
Great authentic food in a cozy neighborhood. Reasonably priced and fast service. I recommend the pulpo and octopus tacos.

Yelp
Taqueria Habanero Review: Delicious Tacos at a Great Price Taqueria Habanero offers great tacos at a good price, starting at $4 per taco and going up to $6. They also serve fantastic tortas. We tried the al pastor, bistec, and shrimp tacos, all of which were delicious. The tortillas are mostly corn, adding to the authentic flavor. The service was fast and efficient; we sat outside, and the staff came quickly to take our order. The atmosphere was chill and relaxed. There's another location by Rhode Island Ave, making it convenient for more people to enjoy their tasty offerings.

Yelp
I love coming to Taqueria Habanero. I've been here a few time for lunch and their tacos are always on point. I'm a fan of their Al Pastor Tacos, Barbacoa Tacos, Carne Asada. I've tried some other things on their menu and haven't been disappointed. Today I had their Chilaquiles with red salsa. I opted to skip the extra protein today and it was delicious with the egg on top. Always ask what the Agua Fresca of the day is. When I went it was Hibiscus (Jamaica in Spanish) and they had Pineapple. I recommend their Aguas, but if you're feeling festive get any of the margs. So good!

Yelp
Tacos done right. The corn tortillas are hand made in house. My al pastor had marinated pork with a hint of pineapple. A little sweet to balance the spices. Then t he ere was pulpo octopus taco. So easy to overcook the octopus leaving it tough, but they get it just right. Finally, grilled shrimp. Light Russian dressing on the last two, and diced onions with cilantro on all three. Flawless, and under $13. You can't beat it.

Yelp
Sucked and Disgusting ! Place did not have any Straws was a fly in my water, and I watched a worker behind bar wash out 4 glasses that a group had just used with "Hot water" and no Soap! Plus I was charged $3 for a chip refill when the bowl of chips is tiny and i ordered guacamole. Not sure how clean or organized this place is or if this was a bad day but definitely will not be back here again.

Lucas B.

Yelp
Muy poca birria en la torta de birria. Skimping on the birria in the birria torta. But food is good.
google avatar

Mircea R.

Yelp
I called and very politely asked if they had outdoor seating. I got hung up on and subsequent calls were not answered. Shockingly rude and disrespectful, even for 2024. It's no wonder the restaurant industry is in trouble.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food, but small portions for the price. Came to taqueria habanero with some friends because we've been looking for good, authentic Mexican food in DC. Surprisingly, it's been more difficult to find than we thought! I ordered the huarache with steak and I also shared the guac and chips with my table. I was excited to see huaraches on the menu because it's not available everywhere. When my plate came, it looked and tasted delicious, but I felt that the portion was quite small for $15. I know Mexican food in DC is pricy either way, but where I'm from, I would be able to get a huarache triple the size for the same price. I also am someone who gets full pretty easily, but this meal did not fill me up. Still looking for my go-to spot in DC and this is definitely a contender, but the portion size really is a factor for me.

J B.

Yelp
I drove around DC last night looking for good Mexican food. After passing several of the standard places I saw Taqueria Habanero on Yelp. I did not go wrong and highly recommend. I started with the reasonably priced freshly made tacos. The fillings are awesome! I had the goat taco and the pork and pineapple. Delicious! For the main course I had the enchilada's with salsa verde. Perfecto... I sat outside, which was quite nice. Had I known there was an outdoor area I would have brought my dog. Service was very friendly! Great people working there! Only downside is the margaritas. They are very good and appear to be made with fresh lime juice. At most restaurants, I usually drink one and may drink two. I drank 3 and without hesitation can convey that they have minimal tequila. They were very weak. Nonetheless, the food and service are not to be missed.
google avatar

Joyce W.

Yelp
Taqueria is a causal neighborhood spot with 99% authentic Mexican food! The first basket of tortilla chips are complimentary and it comes with a classic salsa and salsa verde. Their birria tacos are one of the best I've had in the area! No reservations available but there are plenty of seats available both indoors and outdoors. We didn't wait when we came in for lunch on a Saturday. Will definitely come back again and check out their extensive menu!
google avatar

Yelp
I was craving tacos & looked up the highest rated tacos in the area. I went in & the ambiance was nice. Very cultural vibe of Mexico. I ordered the salmon tacos & the salmon looked a little weird but the tacos looked ok. After eating 2/4 tacos my stomach starting cramping. I thought it was maybe the margarita but after eating another taco I starting feeling sick. I knew it was bad because I couldn't tell if I had to vomit or pass a bowel. I then went to the restroom due the stomach pain & flustered feeling I had. My guess was the salmon was not fresh but I'm not sure. I'm very very disappointed by this. My bill was $75 & my food was not worth it. Support this restaurant for yourself.

Yelp
I'm a white boy born and raised, now don't get me wrong. But these were the god damn best tacos I've ever had! I guess papa was right, I shouldn't never judge a book by its cover. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This cute hole in the wall restaurant has delicious food, but it's overpriced. The first violation is that there were no taco Tuesday specials...disrespectful. Given that Taco Tuesday is my favorite holiday, I expect deals. Nonetheless, I ordered two salmon tacos and one shrimp taco with a side of rice and beans. We also ordered guacamole. My tacos were actually really good as far as flavor. However, the tortillas were too thin and broke apart too easily. There also wasn't enough salmon and shrimp in the tacos. These folks literally put two shrimp in the shrimp taco. That was sad, but it was good. And the salmon portions were a tease. Prepare to spend a good amount for little food. The rice and bean portions were about 1/3 cup each. It was enough for me since I supplemented with tacos, but they should serve a bit more for the price. The watermelon aguas frescas was okay. It tasted like artificial sweetener--not great. I didn't finish it. But to be fair, I'm more of a water person. The chips and salsa (and guacamole) were delicious. But only the first basket of chips and salsa were included...these folks are penny pinching for real! I miss LA, where chips and salsa are bottomless! My friend enjoyed her salmon taco, but she did not enjoy her pork tacos and didn't finish them. I would come back if money wasn't a thing or if someone else was paying :-)

Yelp
We took our niece who just started at University of Maryland, and was already tired of dining hall food to Taqueria Habanero the other night. I loved how bright and colorful the restaurant was. We were immediately greeted and seated. Luckily, we got there when we did because it filled up quickly. It's not a large place, but there are an ample number of tables. They are close together, though. We order chips to start out with. A very small bowl of chips came out with two excellent sauces, a Green and a smoky red. Very yummy, but I wish there had been more chips, which also were very good. I ordered the burrito with steak. It was nice and large stuffed with all sorts of wonderful things, including steak, beans, and queso. It came topped with sauce, so I had to eat it with a knife and fork, which worked for me since burritos can be a bit messy. It was delicious! My husband got something he's never had before, the Chilaquiles, which was tortilla chips, topped with egg, queso, and sauce. It was a little spicy, but he loved it. He definitely wants to go back and get that again! Our niece ordered the Huarache with steak. It was small, but she really liked it. If we had not been with her, I probably would've ordered a drink. We were sitting very close to the bar and the bartender chatted with us and was very cool! He was making really lovely looking drinks. Definitely another time! the great part about Taqueria habanero is that their prices are very reasonable for this area. I definitely left fall and happy! Highly recommend.

Yelp
***UPDATE*** THEY ADDED TIP TO THE RECEIPT! I TIPPED APPROPRIATELY FOR THE SERVICE OR LACK-THERE-OF AND THEY CHANGED IT. FORTUNATELY FOR ME, I TOOK A PICTURE OF THE SIGNED RECEIPT I LEFT. I KNEW THEY WERE SHADY AND THEY PROVED ME RIGHT. MOVING FORWARD WITH MAKING SURE THIS IS DEALT WITH. *****CAUTION - BEWARE *****We were super excited to try this place bc of the reviews but left disappointed and grossed out. Our waiter, Emerson, was non-existent. He was more interested in gossiping with the other employees than doing his job. We never got water refills and had to get up to ask him for things we needed, bc he was not interested in doing his job l. Finally, the worst part is that there was a COCKROACH crawling on the wall next to our table. We killed it and had to get up and show him. He was unfazed, which clearly means he is used to seeing them there. We will NEVER come back to this place. It is wayyyyyyy overrated, and they're depending on their past accomplishments vs working on their current reputation . What's even more.... there are other reviews warning of food poisoning. That's interesting considering the COCKROACH we had nearly crawling on our table. I'd say a visit from the health department is due.

Yelp
Tacos, guacamole and margaritas were great. The churros...looked amazing but I didn't know they were filled.

Yelp
Meh. We got a couple birria, tinga poblano, and barbacoa tacos to share. They were fine, but a little dry, except obviously for the birria. My friend enjoyed the tinga poblano most, while I preferred the birria.

Yelp
Love this spot. Fold and service are good, music and its volume are good also. Being Mexico-born, I definitely approve of Habanero.

Yelp
Amazing authentic Mexican food here. I love coming because the food is delicious and the drinks are tasty. I loved all the tacos. The marinade keeps the meat and shrimp juicy and the tortillas are homemade. Of all the tacos my favorite are the shrimp and steak. The flautas are HUGE. We got the Al pastor- we wished it was a little spicier. The rice and beans are salty in just the right way. The final part of this restaurant that keeps bringing me back is the salsa verde. I always have to ask for more and sometimes ask to buy some to take home. Enjoy this restaurant- it's easy!!

Yelp
Some of the best mole sauce in DC. Consistently good food, quick service. Very hole in the wall vibes.
