11 Places to Find Charming Chai Lattes in Portland - Eater Portland

"Tiffin Asha’s house chai uses a foundation of Nilgiri tea, grown in the blue mountains of Tamil Nadu, which adds a layer of aromatics on top of the spice blend and caramel of the brown sugar. This chai is well-suited to the restaurant’s sweets, like the coconut ladoo, though it would be criminal to visit Tiffin Asha and not walk out with a dosa. The restaurant is open for takeout." - Nick Townsend

Yelp
I really enjoyed the Saturday brunch options that they had. I had enchiladas and the person I went with had a chimichanga which I took a bite off and it was absolutely delicious. The enchiladas were very flavorful as well. One of the things I appreciate it most was that we were able to go get brunch as vegans, which can be pretty tricky in this city. Overall, I say this is a great place to go for brunch on a Saturday or Sunday with your vegan or non-vegan friends who are craving a Mexican themed brunch.

Yelp
So good, it's excellent Mexican food, vegan or not, but it's also just excellent vegan Mexican food - it's not just deep fried and messy (which has its place), but really tasty and appetizing. I looked at what I ordered and announced I'd never be able to finish all of this. I finished it, because what else can you do; bite follows bite, you don't want to stop. Service was patient and nice.

Yelp
Uh oh, now I need to move to NE to be closer to this glorious vegan Mexican food. First impression: the murals and artwork are gorgeous. There is so much to look at that waiting for food breezes by in a colorful fugue. Limited indoor seating but lots of outdoor tables which are perfect for people watching and enjoying a nice afternoon or evening. We stopped by for brunch shortly after opening and had no wait at all but it got more and more busy which makes sense. The food is worth driving across town!! We were greeted immediately and shown to table, instructed to order either at the counter or via QR code at the table. Food took a little while but absolutely worth any wait! The Crunchwrap is the size of a dinner plate and two of us enjoyed the heck out of half and then had to save the other half for later. Definitely shareable! Bursting with flavors and textures and actually crunchy inside. We got three kinds of salsa which were all overwhelmingly flavorful. The breakfast platto was a great starting point, we were overwhelmed by the entirely plant based menu. Lightly sweet fluffy pancakes with a fresh berry compote and dusting of powdered sugar rivaled anything from your favorite diner. The breakfast tofu is a superstar. Spiced Mexican coffee and horchata were also delicious. Can not over-recommend. Even the bathroom is gorgeous, clean, and well stocked.

Yelp
Ordered a few tacos, an empanada, and the wet burrito to share. Was very excited to have all vegan options. The food was good, but it didn't blow me away, like I was expecting. It's possible that I just didn't pick the most stand out options. If I lived closer I'd definitely go back for another go! The artwork and mural outside were so cute and well done, that was very fun to look at as we waited for the food (which was quite a long wait, but I think that just speaks to their popularity!)

Yelp
Mis Tacones has the best vibe, service, and Mexican-styled vegan food. I've taken my non-vegan friends who also love the food and the experience!

Yelp
Had an enjoyable visit over to Mis Tacones with some friends who were in town who are vegan. We needed an easy brunch spot and this fit the bill. I'll preface by saying that I personally am not vegan. Overall atmosphere is chill and fast casual I would say. Menu can be found at the table but you overall order at the counter which worked fine since it wasn't busy during our visit but I could see slowing things down. The decor is fun and festive with large murals and a lot of color. Food overall was tasty and satisfying. The portions I will say are good, and the general flavors are nice. We split the burrito with asada seitan, which packed a lot of flavor. I appreciated the salsas they had to go with the meals. I wouldn't go as far to say this was better than its meat alternative but it was a solid vegan option. If you need an all vegan spot this is a great choice, but otherwise probably wouldn't rush back.

Yelp
Loved this casual vegan Mexican bar and cafe. Great menu with a bit of everything. The nachos were next level. Tacos and burrito the same. Margarita tasted fresh and delish. How exceptional to have an all vegan spot with amazing food and service.

Yelp
Was disappointed after hearing all of the hype. I love how they use blue corn tortillas, but the taco flavors and stuffings were not as flavorful as expected. The corn empanada just had corn inside and it was a little dry with barely any flavoring. Meanwhile the tacos needed a lot of sauce. I tried one of the asada seitan tacos but unfortunately the seitan had that strange seitan-like flavor. That was my least favorite taco and I had to use a lot of salsa cover up the fake meat flavor. The frijole (beans) taco was way better. For someone who is used to eating regular meat tacos, this does not pass the bar.

Yelp
I was super excited to try this vegan Mexican place in PDX. Ordered Taco Al Pastor and Quesadilla Asada. Both were pretty great. The al pastor have quite a flavor and that garlic cashew crema sauce on top of it is a great combination. I liked the taco tortilla as well. Liked quesadilla asada too - just put some hot sauce by the side. I was tempted to try mock tails and cocktails as they looked great! The service was quick enough.

Yelp
I like Mexican food. Once in a while I'll have to be honest it's not my favorite food but I always find something delicious and when a buddy of mine recommended a VEGAN Mexican we had to try it. I am not a vegan or vegetarian (my husband is a pescatarian (he eats veggies and fish). But that never hood us back on trying vegan dishes. Mis Tacones not only a vegan Mexican but also a great safe place for the lgbtq community a specific part of the community even can eat free on special occasions. And everyone can support this with paying forward a meal. Great idea and worth it! The food was great and everything you see on the pictures has been tasty. So nothing wrong and if you like Mexican food then you will enjoy mis tacones! The Ambiente and music (!) is authentic and a reason my husband almost run out with bloody ears haha (say he isn't a fan of traditional Mexican music) - but he stayed to finish his burrito. TBH he did not since it was so much food we had to take it home to enjoy it tomorrow. Prices are on the higher end for a "order at the counter" restaurant but then again it's worth it and it's community supporting! So all is fair!

Yelp
First timer from Southern California! My cousin brought us here as it's one of their favorite places to eat. I've been vegan-curious () and was super stoked to try it - my husband was a bit more apprehensive. I ordered the soy chorizo y papas empanada and it was TO DIE for! The asada taco was also super yummy. My husband absolutely loved his asada burrito and said it was one of the best burritos he's ever had. In LA so many of the taco stands use cheap asada and it's just not great, so to have a bomb vegan asada burrito was awesome. Next time we visit we will absolutely be back!

Yelp
*vegan review* one of our favorite places in Portland AND all-time favorite vegan Mexican restaurants!!! Everything we've had here has been a 10/10. When we make trips to Portland we'll end up here at LEAST once. We've brought non-vegan friends here and they loved it just as much as us. You must come here!!!

Yelp
Just had this. I had the gluten free fries, my man had the pollo nachos and a taco, everything was amazing. So good for vegan food. We also had the margarita flight all the flavors were good. The servers are extremely nice and helpful!

Maggie M.

Yelp
Yikes! So disappointed - ordered takeout What we got did not match menu photos online. Guacamole was overly salted puree, Chips - menu stated house made but seemed rather mediocre standard Mexican restaurant. Pico de gallo very small portion - taco - okay but salty Somebody in the kitchen loves salt!

Yelp
Sooooooo good. I am not even vegan, but I crave their flavors. Go now while they have the fresh Watermelon Margarita with Chamoy rim. You're welcome.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome spot. Delicious food and drinks. I'm pretty sure they gave me the wrong food order when I went (asked for a burrito bowl but got loaded fries). I ended up just eating it anyway and it was so good. The rumchata is to die for.

Yelp
This portland place is greatly raved. Very chic ambiance, parking here is really difficult and street parking only. Empanada Elote Nicely done with a good amount of corn Frijoles Taco This was ok, but we liked the other one. Tres Hermanes Taco Good tasting California burrito Loaded Al Pastor Quesedilla Best of all, we had ordered. All the dishes were missing the light kick that Mexican dishes could bring. We were given green and red sauce when asked. Both of the sauces were so diluted, did not help, green was little better. If they use fresh ingredients and add little spice to their dishes, this has the potential to become a great one. Great service, though!

Yelp
A vibrant spot with fun ambience and energy. We're immediately drawn by the La Chimi and Papas Nachos. Both the description and photos for these sounded/looked amazing. Unfortunately, only one item delivered...The Papas Nachos had a lot of potential with cremay and flavorful sauces, as well as an abundance of Al pastor, but the fries themselves were cold and soggy. A big no-no for me. I barely touched it. In contrast, the La Chimi was piping hot, freshly fried, and crispy on the outside. Love the generous amount of filling and guac in the burrito. The pickled onions were very refreshing as well. Wish the meal turned out better than it did, but all in all, a so-so spot for me.

Yelp
Mis Tacones is SO good. I was visiting Portland and ate here twice during my four day visit!! It's been a couple months since I visited and I still think about it all the time! 10/10!!

Michele H.

Yelp
Visiting Portland and wanted to get some good eats...well, Mis Tacones did NOT disappoint!! The Papas con Soyrizo Empanada was my go to! I visited this place twice to get my fill. The fact that their food is homemade and GF was their winning combination. The place is adorable and with awesome, picture worthy decor! Small, but mighty good! I can't say enough about the owners, Carlos and Polo, who were beyond friendly, gracious with their time and energy! I would NOT pass by this place without stopping by! A Portland MUST!

Yelp
I was in town visiting and absolutely had to stop here. It was a must and has been on my list of vegan stops. Everything was so flavorful and delicious. I couldn't get enough of it. I went on a Saturday afternoon, it wasn't crazy busy but definitely the small crew was backed up. So there was a little wait but well worth it. Casual style place with something for everyone. Order at the register and then pick your spot to sit. My pro tip: TRY THE HORCHATA literally the best I've ever had.

Yelp
Myself and two of my coworkers randomly chose to come to this place. One is vegan and the other is vegetarian flexible lol. I'm neither, and thought I'd be down to try my very first vegan restaurant. Mis Tacones did not disappoint. Food was 10/10, our server was great, and the vibes/decor were clean, the music was poppin on the front of the menu it says "trans POC eat for free". I was shocked, and elated because I am a trans person of color, so my meal was FREE. My burrito I ordered was $19, I did have to pay for my alcoholic Paloma drink which is totally fine! My drink was $11 and I left a decent tip. my two girl friends had to pay for their meals we had a good time. It's queer owned, welcoming, good friendly people. We will be back! Thank you

Yelp
My new favorite spot to get a burrito and that is saying something for this town. Their vegan food is some of the most amazing I have ever tasted. Even my 10 yo son has been won over. Service and staff are always kind too. Great spot with a casual vibe. Donate a little extra and help to feed our local BI-POC trans community in need while you are at it.

Yelp
We were here for brunch on a Saturday. We had made a reservation for 6 but half our group came half an hour late. They were quite nice about it and still gave us the table on time. We ordered via the QR code on the table. One of the drinks we ordered without alcohol was mistakenly made with alcohol. I'm glad I tasted it before giving it to my daughter, realizing that it was alcoholic. We told them and they gave us a non alcoholic version quickly. Food came fast. They didn't have the egg substitute ("Just egg"), so everything came with the tofu scramble instead, which was pretty good though. All dishes tasted great (quesadilla, soyrizo & huevos desayuno, enchiladas suizas, breakfast plato). Drinks weren't as good as I was expecting them to be, based on the reviews. Really liked the Cafe de Olla though. There's a lot of natural light coming in, so it was great to try it during brunch time. Will try their dinner menu next time.

Taylor V.

Yelp
I love the Cali B burrito. The brownies are to die for!! Everything I've tried is wonderful and all vegan! :) This business has friendly staff, and is openly accepting of Latinx and LGBTQ+ people, especially trans people of color. There is nobody I would rather support and have many times driven out of my way to visit. There is cute, colorful wall decor and fun music is usually playing.

Yelp
I never knew this place existed until I happened to stroll by it, and I'm so glad I did! The entire place is vegan--everything here is fully plant-based, and on top of that, it's delicious! The employees are great, and there's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Personally, I enjoyed sitting outside, especially because of Portland's warm August weather. When I visited, I got a fried chimichanga and a quesadilla. I also tried one of their mocktail drinks, and everything was delicious. Although I wish the menu had mentioned that the chimichanga was fried, it was still fantastic. The presentation of the food was great, and I would definitely come here again if I'm in the area.

Yelp
We didn't feel like we were welcomed which starts the visit off on the wrong foot. We ordered margaritas and chips and salsa which were deliciso. We were looking for a different kind of food, with meat, so we went to pig patas.
google avatar

Martina C.

Yelp
I have to sadly give 3 stars for the food here, but the service and welcoming atmospheric definitely give the boost to 4. Let me say I'm not a HUGE fan of "meat replacement" for vegans. I'd rather have plant based. I don't like fried food at all, it doesn't make me feel good. But my daughter LOVES Mexican food and was dying to go. We kind of just had an impromptu Mom/daughter afternoon and she chose this for late lunch/early dinner. We got nachos with (I THINK,) Al Pastor. I liked them okay. They were very greasy, chips, sauces and the "fake meats." As I said, I'd rather keep it simple and fresh but we wanted to experience this spot we had heard raved about. We had Asada Quesadillas, which I REALLY disliked because they were actually DRIPPING WITH grease. (Which you can see in the picture where I'm holding a slice.) My daughter liked them the best so I had one and was done. Because that much grease equals a very unhappy tummy for me! We also got two of the tacos. We got the Pollo (soy curls,) and the Frijoles. Thank goodness these were my daughter's least favorite because they were my favorite. The tortilla itself was a lovely texture. Floppy but thicker than a flour tortilla and a BIT chewier. I really enjoyed it. Because I really dislike plain corn tortillas. These Nixtamal tortillas were delish!! The Pollo was a great flavor and the frijoles as well. It lacked texture in the actual taco for me though. Like a bright vegetable mix, cabbage, peppers, salsa? I don't know. So just okay. The drinks we enjoyed were delicious. I had a margarita, which was delicious. And she had an Agua Fresca and it too was delicious. As I said, the atmosphere is VERY welcoming and we wanted to support a business that welcomes everyone. Especially when they welcome Trans POC to eat FREE. That's awesome!!! The young guy who took our order came and checked on us several times and was very friendly. That added kindness got me to 4 stars since to me it was all a bit just OKAY.

Yelp
Vegan or not, best refried beans and therefore best frijole tacos this far north. Great level of spice and flavor in all of their vegan meats, and legit staff. Their dessert pop up items are also great! Just wish the restaurant was a bit bigger to accommodate more patrons, as it gets crowded.

Yelp
TLDR: Mis Tacones made us move to the PNW. 10/10, no notes. We visited Mis Tacones on a brief trip to Portland 2 years ago. It was so good that we went for a second time and decided we needed to move from the vegan-barren land of LA. Mis Tacones (for our household) represents so much: the liveliness of queer expression and empowerment; the fruitful possibilities in centering veganism and gluten free cooking with Mexican dishes; the warmth and safety you love being surrounded by, especially over a delicious meal around familiar faces. The music, decor, and colors are so welcoming and homey. We're very grateful to have found this place, and to know that it encouraged us to take the leap out here. Without a doubt, we need to keep supporting places like Mis Tacones!!

Chelsy X.

Yelp
The food here is excellent!! I ordered the Cali B burrito for ($17) and my husband got the Nachos Asada with fries ($17). They were so bomb, we totally forgot it was vegan pretty much the whole time we were eating. Great for meat lovers who have skepticism towards vegan food. I wasn't a fan of the mangonada, wish I got a different drink.

Yelp
I don't appreciate the upcharge for using a credit card. If there was a notice, I didn't see it so it's either barely mentioned or not at all. Customers resent such type of nickel and dime tactics, it almost always backfires in the long run. The Rum Horchata was creative, decent. The Torta bread was fresh and fluffy, overall, a satisfying sandwich. While the interior is aesthetically pleasing, the aura was far from friendly (not rude though.) I appreciate the the POC, queer and community focus angle. One and done for me.

Ben W.

Yelp
The owners, the cooks and the servers deserve the world. Such a good value, this place. You could split a wet burrito between two and be happy for the day. Always filling, fresh and flavorful, house made seitan is phenomenal and I dream of the generous rims on their Michelada's. Half the time I order to go but It's always lovely to dine there. Vibrant atmosphere and decor. Mis Tacones feels like home. Sure you have to pay, but I'd argue you can taste the love more here than any place in portland.
google avatar

Yelp
Really great flavor combinations and the vegan cheese in the quesadilla was incredibly delicious! Loved the presentation of the food and the staff were very friendly.

Laura C.

Yelp
What is there to say that hasn't already been said? Amazing vegan food, super nice people that work there, big portions. It is a tad on the pricey side, but honestly.....it's worth it. Get the nachos and split them with a friend. Also, the refried beans are a 10/10.
google avatar

Yelp
Mis Tacones. If you're flying into the PDX, or Portland, please stop by and support local business. Food here is amazing and I promise you the service is incredible. In addition, La Casa de Mama is a Latina-owned & family operated pop-up Vegan Mexican panadería in Portland, Oregon. Overall chill vibes and tasteful meals and desserts.
google avatar

Holland M.

Yelp
100% vegan with gluten free options-- YES! This queer owned business knocked it out of the park for us, and that's not easy to do when ordering via delivery. The food tasted fresh and had generous portions. My partner enjoyed his burrito and nachos, and we can't wait to try more!

Nando C.

Yelp
This cute little place is a hidden gem. The ambience is very welcoming, if I could only make one small suggestion. It would be a great idea to have additional help for the front, it was a quite a bit of work for one individual. Other than that, it was a good place for vegan brunch !

Sydney A.

Yelp
The food was incredible! All the authentic flavors were there and honestly tastes almost exactly like the non-vegan thing (I'm dairy free for health reasons so it's hard to get cream or cheese) but much lighter. We were greeted warmly by staff as soon as we came in but were given enough space to check out the menu as long as we needed. We ordered through a qr code at the table which was cool. The vibes inside were fun and cozy. Please check this place out if you can.

Yelp
Oh man... I have enjoyed many vegan Mexican food establishments for the last 6 years from all around California to Las Vegas, to Portland, Chicago, and beyond. I can say Mis Tacones has been my favorite out of them all!! (and there are many high ranking spots) The staff was great and everything we ordered was amazing. Bonus points for having alcohol and extra bonus for a brunch / breakfast food!! Seriously I'm not joking how great this food is. Y'all should expend to Las Vegas so I can enjoy weekly!! :)
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
Burrito Ahogado was a challenge for me to finish, as it should be for the $19 price. The Brownie was amazing, as it should be for the $6 price. The interior design is inviting. The weather was nice enough during my visit, that I sat at one of the tables outside. Service is friendly and prompt.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
I really like this place because of their belief in vegan foods with a twist on making the food taste like traditional Mexican food even though it's vegan, but it is delicious nonetheless. I like that they give out food to the homeless which is great. It's really helpful in the community to give back, especially to those who are more in need. right by downtown Portland. It's in a good spot ample parking just close to the street so you can find parking on the neighborhood areas or you can get the street parking. Inside the business it is clean and there's plenty of tables to sit down and enjoy a meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Mis Tacones is a queer-owned, 100% vegan, Mexican food spot on NE Killingsworth. And it's awesome. Polo and Carlos started the biz to create and find their community. It transitioned from a pop up to this brick and mortar. They're doing some radical things: they say trans POC always eat free and have a "pay it forward" option while ordering for those who want to support. I stopped by during Latinx Heritage Month and I am so glad I did because it's going to be a regular in my diet. Westernized Mexican food is typically heavy on the meat and cheese. Here, they've done a great job making vegan versions that are still so delicious and filling. I believe they primarily use seitan as their meat substitute. They've got all the menu items you want - burritos, tacos, nachos, empanadas, quesadillas, and more. Plus a full bar, taco Tuesday specials, and a happy hour. I got the carnitas burrito to-go. It's not cheap but it's gigantic. Staff was friendly. I was accidentally double-charged by the payment system and they were responsive to my email and quick to fix it. I definitely encourage you to support this biz and their delicious vegan Mexican food!
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
The ambiance is light and refreshing. Indoor and outdoor options for seating. Casual and comfortable. If you first eat with your eyes, be prepared to feast twice. Each plate presents well. Then you dig in and feast again. Nachos? 10/10. Burritos (we tried 2)? 10/10. Tacos? Yep, 10/10. Bring an appetite and if you get a burrito, be prepared to take home leftovers. Really tasty for vegans and non-vegans alike. Fresh food served up well. Go. Go now!
google avatar

Ariana Q.

Yelp
Food is absolutely delicious! Service is rather slow but mostly friendly. If I lived in the area, i would definitely come back again, just because the food is SO good. Expensive but the prices aren't out of the ordinary for vegan food. I would still come again, despite the service.
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
My partner and I got all 5 kinds of tacos and all of them were awesome. Cute inside. Fast. Delicious. Definitely recommended.
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Food was all quite tasty and decently sized. I'd recommend the burritos and nachos. The burrito was very nicely wrapped and pressed which made eating it no pain at all. The margaritas were average. Service was good and they were all friendly. I wish they would move the bus station to where the empty ice cream cooler so you don't need to push through people if on the other side but can instead drop it off as exiting. A sign for where the salsas go or have it by the bus station would also be helpful.

W J.

Yelp
Firstly- I will say the food was very good. I would definitely eat the food again. That being said- the restaurant itself was not a pleasant experience. Counter service, bus your own table, get your own water, and chairs that were painful to sit in made it feel impersonal and an unpleasant dining experience. To top it off, being asked to leave because people were waiting made it so we felt absolutely unwelcoming. TLDR- get takeout, and go sit somewhere where you will be able to relax and enjoy the food.

Yelp
Food was magnificent! Service was good. Best burrito I have ever had, including meat burritos! Five stars for this one!
