Brian Malarkey Delves Into Baja-Asian Street Food | Eater San Diego

"I sampled the soft-opened, eco-conscious concept from Davin and Jessica Waite in South Oceanside, a zero-waste, plant-based and responsibly sourced menu dedicated to “keeping things real and local” with dishes like strawberry stem pesto pasta, mushroom aguachile, a beet reuben, and artfully presented nigiri sushi with “plenty of attitude.”" - Keri Bridgwater

Yelp
I enjoy coming here and trying something new every time. Today at around 1 pm, it was not very busy and were seated right away. The seating arrangement is comfortable, but this was after we asked to sit at a bigger table than what they were assigning us. I don't understand why you would need to fill in every table if it means to sit a party of 2 in the middle of two parties when there are plenty of other tables. It's just a tad too close, you know? Too personal as far as listening to each other's convo. We split a patty melt and Korean chicken sandwich with fries, both from their regular menu. They also offered a seasonal menu; I ordered their apricot and peach soda from this. They both were very good. The patty melt was gooey with their own version of Swiss cheese. The chicken sando is their basic breaded tofu chicken but with a purple cabbage kimchi and a sauce that I couldn't really pick up on. My bf enjoyed all the flavors from the chicken sandwich. We enjoyed their French fries, but not so much the beet ketchup. I love beets, but I wasn't feeling it so much today so we took the uneaten fries home.

Yelp
The Plot is located in Oceanside with a lovely business front. I was greeted and was seated outdoors as requested. I was kindly handed a menu; a few items were suggested to me and I ultimately ordered the Medi bowl. The gyro bites within the dish were a nice touch. I like what they stand for sustainable and fresh local food. No waste. Leftovers thrown in for Compost for the garden. The whole restaurant was nicely decorated with a cozy elevated space feel and natural lighting throughout; the outside patio is next to the garden. The restrooms were clean and tidy. Next time I have my eyes on the meatless loaf with Argentinian chimichurri and the Shepard pie. Tips: Small parking lot "Walk like you belong in every room."

Yelp
The Plot is a fantastic vegan restaurant that exceeded our expectations in every way. The ambiance is warm and inviting, with a rustic, stylish decor It's spacious enough for larger groups, we choose to sit outside by the garden where most of the produce is grown. The food here is outstanding. With items like cheesy truffle fries, meatless loaf, chicken and waffles just to name a few my mouth is watering as I type, every dish we ate was packed with flavor and beautifully presented, showcasing the creativity and quality of the plant-based options they offer. The service was also top-notch. The staff were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu, quick to make sure we had everything we needed. Whether you're vegan or just looking to try something new, this is a place will not disappoint.

Yelp
Whether Vegan, vegetarian, or carnivore, The Plot is hands down, the best food in town. Service always exceeds expectations and...they welcome pets. Chill atmosphere only adds to the total experience. Course suggestions; everything on the menu! Keep rockin it, Davin and Team.

Yelp
Was invited by a friend and absolutely loved it! :) We were warmly hosted by Ruby- who is an angel! The food is delicious and they were very accommodating to my requests. Wonderful spot in North County!

Yelp
Great space, great people, and great food. We had a lovely dinner on their awesome patio. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the brussels sprouts! Healthy eating without feeling like you're missing out.

Yelp
I've now been to the Plot many many times. We've had a lot of their food- both from the brunch and dinner menu. My daughter always gets the waffle no matter what time of day we go. I love their biscuits and sausage off the brunch menu but also have enjoyed their salads, vegan sushi (chronic roll is my fav), pancakes, chicken and waffles, and their beet Sando. My only critique is I think their food is overly salted. I wish they would tone it done a notch. Other than that, I appreciate this local all vegan eatery with a no food waste theme. Service has always been friendly and there is both indoor and outdoor seating. This makes for a great date night or just a night out among friends. I've also been lucky enough to have my good friend host a baby shower for me here. I do enjoy this place quite a bit. I would love less salt though!

Yelp
Food 10/10 service 10/10 definitely going again!! The tortilla soup hit the spot & they had a special meal of the day or something that was delish!

Yelp
First tried this place in San Diego and I'm so glad a location opened up here too! (Almost) everything is so good! - Farmer's market veggies (seasonal) (5/5): some sort of asian choy charred on a bed of some creamy delicious sauce and topped chili oil and lentil caviar. Mmm so good. - Chronic (sushi roll) (5/5): crunchy, a lil spicy, salty, a lil sweet- such a great mix of flavors. Really elevates the vegan sushi game. - Biscuits & gravy (3/5): the fried "chicken" was breaded perfectly and very delicious with the gravy. It did feel like there wasn't enough gravy though because it was carrying the flavor for the "chicken" and the biscuits were a little too dense and dry. - Polenta & chorizo (5/5): This was so good with the broccolini perfectly charred, the polenta so creamy, the chili oil adding some fusion. Perfect! Excited to try their brunch menu too since it's different!

Yelp
I'm from out of town and It was a fluke that I found this restaurant. I feel so fortunate as I'm vegan, gluten... blah blah. But talk about healthy AND yummy, prepared beautifully. Great service, clean comfortable environment. I had the balsamic brussel sprouts...omg. I'll be back for more..!!

Yelp
NEW FAVORITE SPOT! First off I love the idea of working with local farmers/ no waste + vegan on top of it all! Luckily I drove down to Oceanside from Los Angeles today to visit family and HAD to try this spot out. Mind you I'm not vegan BUT my experience today makes me want to go back to my plant based ways . I was greeted by RUBY who radiated such positivity! She was SUPER helpful explaining the menu to me and sharing a bit about the restaurants mission . What I loved about this spot is the staff REALLY believes in the mission. Everyone was super helpful and got me super excited to try the menu out . The ambience was just perfect . I started off with the soup of the day which consisted of coconut based broth with kale and other goodies ( DELICIOUS); followed by the cheesy truffle fries with beet "ketchup" ( BEST FRIES I've EVER HAD hands down!) and the plot primavera salad. It was the first time I've ever seen a restaurant use SEA BEANS and really appreciated it! As a forager I love picking this plant near the ocean and found out they harvest the SEA BEANS every morning . The salad was a delight. To top it off I had the makrut lime leaf ginger seasonal house soda + a festive gluten free dessert ( completely forgot the name but I'm wanting more of it !) All in all I had a 10/10 experience . The staff has to be the friendliest high vibration staff I have encountered in a very long time. Whoever is doing the hiring is doing a fantastic job! I loved this place so much I'm going back tomorrow before I head back to Los Angeles! Thank you Ruby for suggesting so many great food choices + excellent service! .

Yelp
Best vegan food in America. I have written other, much longer reviews, but I'll keep this brief. Food: the best vegan I've ever eaten. Service: charming and correct. Ambience: we sat in the garden where the food was growing...you can't beat that.

Yelp
Thanks to @Meglio_knives recommendation of The Plot years ago. We met there for a family birthday and is now a staple in our places to dine. The food is something that is not only beautiful, tasteful but wonderfully thoughtful. Davin and his wife has created a gem that has expanded. Davin takes pride in his creations which are out of this world. The staff is fun and friendly. Food is amazing! Trust me, my meat and potato husband enjoys the food. What I love is their large garden that is used to make these amazing dishes. Wasting food is not happening here as they use every part of what they grow. Give it a try - you WILL NOT be disappointed! And to pick a favorite dish is hard because it's all good!!

Yelp
Service was impecable! Our waitress was great and explained the history of the restaurant as well as their inventory source. Amazing story! We had the carrots and the spaghetti noodles for the appetizer from the season menu, tasty and unique! For entrees, we had the chicken Caesar salad, the seasonal risotto, and the biscuit and gravy. All very good, presentation was beautiful! For drinks, I had the baby Michael (great) and the twisted sisters (a lot of ice and lacked flavor). Also had the plot cake desert which was maybe a 7 out of 10. Overall first time experience was great, you can tell the owners take pride in their craft and want to feed you honest and fulfilling meals. Inside vibe was chill and the music was hitting. Picture soft chill music with low lights and rustic modern views. Was brought here for my birthday as we don't typically have an all plant based restaurant close to home, so it was a great first time visit!

Yelp
This place is fully plant based. So if you have a friend who is like a serious meat lover and don't like plant based meat. DO NOT BRING THEM HERE. That said the food is very good for plant based food. There is a lot of space for sitting and it gives me a very open feel with great vibes. Music played was very soothing and I love the vibes here. There are benches lining the wall with cushions and its generally a very homey kind of feel. Loved how relaxing it was. I got a spam kimchi bowl and my husband got the hot chicken sandwich which essentially is fried tofu sandwiched between two pieces of very nicely baked bread. I sneaked a couple of mouthfuls and I can tell you that is a delicious sandwich. But my husband didn't like it one bit. He is a 100% meat kind of person. Even chicken barely cuts it for him. So.... that said, I found it wonderfully crispy and delicious for a tofu burger. My spam kimchi bowl is wonderfully tasty. It's not the kimchi in the traditional sense but it is very good. It's more like sauerkraut without the spice. And the 'spam' is actually beet spam and again, the texture is pretty close to musubi. I'm going to say I love the textures dancing in my mouth when I ate this. Crunchy and yummy. Just the right taste. I had a nice almond blossom with sake. The almond syrup is not very strong just lightly dancing on the tongue. It's a very relaxing drink. Love it. However one point to note is that the parking to this place is very hard to get to. After we were seated, we were told that the parking to this place is behind the building. We circled the building twice before we gave up and parked at the front. Unfortunately despite it being so good, we probably won't be coming back. Not because it's not good. But because the hubs won't eat plant based food. Will probably bring other friends who are vegans back here. Loved it and can't praise it enough. Edit: I forgot to add it originally. It would be nice if the menu had mentioned plantbased chicken instead of just chicken. Less confusing for the first timers who come into the restaurant to eat.

Yelp
The carrot tacos were yummie & a great suggestion -- I love how the customer can sit in the veggie garden to eat . Looking forward to trying the dinner menu soon .

Yelp
Wow! We are visiting from N. California and we're looking for a special vegan meal. This place is a must try! The food is fresh as it comes and some is grown in a small garden on site. The food is beautifully presented and prepared with intention to details. I left full but as the food is do well fine I don't feel heavy. I had the meatless loaf but to me the star of the show was the greens on top of the sweet potato mash. My companion got the gnocchi and very much enjoyed it.

Yelp
Everything here is amazing! Love the plant-based menu! The risotto is really good and the chronic sushi roll.

Yelp
I hate to say that it took so long to try The Plot, since I believe that it's a responsibility to support ethical businesses to ensure that they can stick around, but I'm so glad that I now have so I can share with you all just how fantastic this place really is. Located on Coast Highway near the south end of Oceanside, is this beautiful, clean, open, bright, welcoming modern space. Conveniently close to the beach and plenty of other local little shops. There's a long tie of outdoor seating in a patio along the south side of the building, and off of it is large outdoor garden that's thriving and full of life, which serves as a supplementary source for their amazing kitchen. Our party of 6 ate at the lone picnic table in the garden yesterday, and I was tickled to see the chefs frequent it for clippings of various herbs and leafy greens. We came twice in one week, and both times the food and service were both top notch. We tried so many unique, delicious, amazing plant based dishes, some duplicates between the two trips because they were too good to resist a second time. Not one bad bite was had, nor a bad taste from any bit of our experiences, including the level of service. Friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, to a tee. Favorites: Ceaser Salad, Broccolini, Cauliflower, Crab Cakes, Olive Oil Cake. Suggestions: Add a black non-fruited ice tea, and some more N/A options! I am confident that a few N/A beers would be appreciated by many, and not sit around wasting fridge space. There's a large shift in alcohol consumerism right now, many people practicing moderation or abstaining altogether, especially those with healthier inclinations, which I imagine makes up a large percentage of the customer base. So glad to have finally indulged in the wonders awaiting here. Hoping for many years of success for this business, continued growth, and culinary exploration and excellence. Can't wait to come back! Keep up the great work and kudos, to The Plot!

Yelp
Follow-up visit. This place is REALLY special. Waitstaff all unusually wonderful, great personalities. An extraordinary menu range, whether you are vegan ... or not. The fries are out of this world. Well . . . everything is. Not inexpensive, but well worth every nickel.

Yelp
The Plot is an excellent choice for a casual yet charming plant-based farm to table meal with loved ones! I visited the Plot with a party of 8 friends for a weeknight dinner. Despite our large party, we were sat immediately (wow!!!!). Upon arrival, we were loving the modern interior and gorgeous outdoor area. I definitely recommend sitting outdoors on a nice evening, and the mini fire pits beside each table were a nice touch. The Plot's gardens stole the show. Following our meal, we had a lovely time walking through the gardens and appreciating the hard work that has gone into growing the veggies and herbs that we just enjoyed! The menu and early summer seasonal menus were solid, plenty of different plant-based options that cater to different preferences and allergies. We enjoyed: - 3 cocktails that I can't find on the menu (lol) - Cup of chili - Green goddess salad - Chicken and waffles - Seasonal risotto - Sweet potato gnocci - Meatless loaf - Chronic roll - Plot cake (comped, thank you!) - Dark chocolate mousse (comped, thank you!) Food and drink were all exquisite. Our party thoroughly enjoyed everything that we ordered, and important to note that the majority of the group in non-vegan! Each dish was full of umami and depth of flavors. My personal highlight was the plot cake and dark chocolate mousse...don't skip on dessert! Our server was excellent, though I didn't catch his name. He gave special attention to those in the group with allergies. Overall, I recommend the Plot to anyone regardless of if you're vegan or not. It's perfect for a casual date or family/friends outing. It's more than just a restaurant, it's an experience!

Yelp
Came for my friends birthday she is vegan and it is her favorite place to eat. Although the rest of us aren't I enjoyed trying new foods and flavors i normally wouldn't, everything was delicious. Im writing this for mainly our server unfortunately we forgot to get his name but we came 12/17 @ 6:30 if that helps figure out who he is lol. But he was very passionate about the food and ingredients here. He embodies what great service is about. Thank you for the experience it was a great dinner!

Yelp
I'm not vegan but I do love some good vegan food! I don't make the trip up to north county often, but I'm so glad that I stopped by the plot for lunch. I got a fried "chicken" sandwich that was tofu. If you've ever had stinky tofu it's that consistency, plus pickled vegetables. But the potato salad - best I've ever had. Portions are a bit small, but the prices are cheaper to reflect that. Staff were very friendly and accommodating to my food allergies. I also love the sustainability of the restaurant, they have a beautiful outdoor patio area in the midst of a garden. I saw them pick vegetables, so I think they do use the food they plant. There were quite a few flies outside for this reason, but I understand that it is a garden. Would definitely come back! And would love to try the express restaurant in carlsbad.

Yi S.

Yelp
Nice interior design, but SAME formulaic menu that is too spicy. Everything is redundant and in order to think outside of the box, it would be helpful to change the menu per season. The "sushi" does not taste like anything. Do not get me started on the co owner Jessica who is rude, condescending to paying customers and a walking red flag. So many other vegan spots that are a million times on point.

Thomas O.

Yelp
OK so after the owner responded to my review, I genuinely feel bad now for giving two stars SO I'm going to show some love here because the staff was very lovely when we visited. They did however tell us many things that were simply not true (go back and read my initial review where I explain). I'll give some benefit of the doubt here though and concede that maybe they were just honest mistakes. Please do get all your employees on the same page though. Please have your most experienced staff member give the garden tour and maybe not the guy that just started working there. Please do work on serving consistent dinners... Even my wife who has been multiple times and raved about it, said her dinner was a let down. Lastly, please do take this criticism constructively as I am just trying to help this wonderfully thought out restaurant as well as potential customers who are about to drop $200 like we did. Lastly, the owner is correct in stating that Donna Jean did not close down. They were closed for renovation when my friend went recently but there were no signs up to explain that they would be open the following week so they thought the restaurant had thrown in the towel. Regardless, even though I personally see the vegan trend dying (sustainable & well balanced pasture raised meat, cheese & eggs are factually good for your health) we should absolutely support restaurants that try to source their food sustainably. Its our only way forward! I do honestly love the mission here at The Plot, we just didn't love the food & the inconsistent comments we received.

Yelp
We loved our dinner so much at one in Costa Mesa that we had to give the original a fair chance. Totally different vibe in a good way. Outdoor you can sit amongst the plants with a nice fire pit. Indoor is a larger space cool vibe and simple decor. Good was just as spectacular. I ordered polenta chorizo and meatless loaf. Both excellent and super flavorful. Kat, our server, knew the menu inside and out and was very helpful in helping us choose. Chef surprise is always a nice treat.

Yelp
I'm very conflicted. I want to like the plot. Really nice servers; servers who also ignored us when they sat us in the garden. Two dishes were great, two were pretty awful and if anyone had come to ask how we were doing maybe I would feel more charitable but we literally had to go inside and retrieve my wine after the second course since no one had brought it out. The servers cleared our dishes and silverware and when they brought the main course departed and I was left with no way to eat my good. Literally went inside AGAIN to just get utensils to eat since no one was coming back to check on us. My second white wine arrived in a carafe that was warm to the touch so surely the person carrying it out might have noticed? Such a pleasant place and also oblivious. They comp the dinner which was on the seasonal menu and just wasn't good. The "meatloaf" and elote were excellent.

Yelp
A highlight of our upscale dining affair was the enchanting Cat, our server and host. Her grace and attentiveness added an extra layer of sophistication to an already exceptional meal, transforming the evening into a truly memorable experience. Cat embodies the epitome of refined service.

Yelp
Hate to disparage a vegan restaurant that's offering unique and elevated dining options, but we were severely disappointed with the takeout order we picked up today. $22 for the spicy bbq and you get 8 pieces - and no rice - and we found the flavor to be underwhelming. The carrotfish and chips is $21 for four tiny pieces of "fish" (which was a solid A-) and a half a pound of fries. Not much of a meal! Perhaps sit-down service is better.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our experience at the Plot! To start, service was above and beyond incredible. Our server was attentive and considerate and customized her recommendations (and the free welcome dish) to my gluten free needs. The cauliflower appetizer was really flavorful without being over powering. It was my favorite dish! My husband got the gnocchi and I got the risotto. Both were very flavorful and the portions were HUGE! It was so nice to be able to sit down and enjoy a healthy, vegan dinner in a beautiful setting!

Yelp
We went last weekend to a brunch at The Plot. Medha and Sashank are saying: "I love the vibe ... and atmosphere. The biscuit is sweet, but it also has an umami undertone to it. Their sauce is better than a regular eggs benedict. I say: Ditto. They love the French fries. Their my personal favorite in San Diego. Here's the best brunch to order: The fries The scallion sauce Ceasar Salad -Dressing on the Ceasar is good Their bread is good - so anything with their bread Sausage is made out of lentils for the sausage and biscuits If you come at night, you can get their vegan sushi. Again, you wouldn't know it was vegan unless I told you. Very flavorful. It's so much fun eating with a vegetarian couple. And I especially like introducing people to this 'gem' of a restaurant. And believe me. Vegan or not. It's good to eat great tasting food that your body can process. I mean, give your waistline a break! Lol Lately we've had lots of requests for vegetarian meals for both San Diego Foodies and Carlsbad Foodies on Meetup/fb. In the future, you will see places where you can fully order both vegetarian and their regular faire. In some cases, it will be strictly vegetarian... but only if it's absolutely delicious, like The Plot. Hope to see you at our next Restaurant Review Event, Chef Marian

Yelp
Wow I really like this place. The seating is beautiful because they have their own garden and everything feels very sustainable. Really good vegan options, the spam kimchi bowl was super filling. It even had sea greens in it, which I had never tried before. We were able to bring our laptops and work from here as well, and they had coffee, beer, wine as well. Loved it

Yelp
This place has a serene atmosphere. As soon as you walk in, it feels like you will enjoy a peaceful dining experience. I sat on their beautiful patio and had the Korean BBQ "Chicken," which was tasty. This was my first visit, so the portion size was unexpected as I am used to large portions in most restaurants, BUT this meal was very filling, so the portion was not an issue. I also had Kombucha, which was tasty. The staff are friendly and welcoming. There is not plenty of parking so street parking is preferred. If you are visiting or are local and want quality plant-based food that's locally sourced, please stop by. I can't wait to try their Sunday brunch!
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best plant-based meals you can get in the SD area! The Plot is a restaurant that prioritizes sustainability, innovation, and clean eating. There is a parking lot with some parking spots and street parking is available as well. Once you walk in, they have indoor or outdoor seating. Wifey and I stopped by for dinner and ordered the Mexican-cronic sushi and the chicken and waffles. The chicken is made with tofu and was a very interesting experience for me. Overall, the staff here are very friendly and accommodating. They are knowledgeable about the menu items and willing to give recommendations. Side note: make sure to go stroll their garden before or after your meal!

Yelp
Blown away by how delicious the food is at the Plot. We are not vegan but do love vegan food and left feeling so thrilled and satisfied after this fabulous dinner. Highlights were the crab cake to start (the texture and taste are phenomenal), the delicious polenta and chorizo, and the Thai chicken larb. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. We can't wait to return.

Yelp
This is a very tasty vegan restaurant. The service is top notch! Love the inside decoration with comfortable seating. Best meat free chick and waffles made with oatmilk.

Yelp
Walked in to order a healthy dinner. Service was fast & nice, the ladies there, running the place are friendly and accommodating. Plenty of seating to choose from. Ordered off the specials menu. Couldn't decide between two items as a server for additional information and recommendation. She recommended the best selling menu item which happens to be the most expensive. It was terrible. I'm very open minded when it comes to vegan food, but this was just bad. Both taste and text you were off, it was mushy & undercooked. I thought again about what I ordered and the food they came. Entree Did not look or taste anything like the ingredients described. Disappointing & over priced. I've been here before and had good food and a good experience, but sadly they fell short tonight in the food category. Very upsetting, considering it was a special occasion.

ImaYelper Y.

Yelp
It's a nice place. Cute garden in back. My husband thinks food was ok but he wouldn't return. I had their take on a shepherd's pie but I really disliked it. There was an odd flavor throughout that was overwhelmingly too much. Waiter acted like it was some great secret. It's not a good one though. We both liked the fries. I would have to try again but my husband would rather not.
google avatar

Mars V.

Yelp
It's yucky, really tried and the food should be good but sadly it was not even close. Tried two different entries could not eat either. Place was empty, they offered to have us not pay (I'm assuming this happens often) but we paid and tipped. The concept is awesome the food needs help, like Gordon Ramsey of the vegetarian world help.

Yelp
So glad to see The Plot come out on the other side of the pandemic. They continually pivoted to keep up with the over 70 (yes, seventy!) ever changing executive orders issued by Governor Newsom. So many of our favorite places were forced out of business during that time, but we were cheering for The Plot and I'm happy to say they survived. I did my best to support them with take out when they couldn't serve in person, and to visit regularly in person when I could. My friend even threw a birthday party for me at The Plot one year of the three year pandemonium, that I will never forget. Our favorite server is Kat, who has been with The Plot since the start and provides the most outstanding service and always has a cheery and helpful attitude. We feel like she's almost family. The food is unique, thoughtful and mindful...and tastes good to boot. Every time there may be a lacking flavor or something that can be improved in a dish, next thing you know, they're improving it! I'm not that much of a dessert person but my favorite thing is their cheesecake. Two flavors: regular and chocolate. Last time I visited I was told it's temporarily off the menu while they work on issues with the crust and filling not sticking together. That's the attention to detail they provide to their dishes. As to the cheesecake: for me, it's going to come apart in my belly, so please put it back on the menu regardless! :) The decor is very modern and unassuming while being welcoming. Recently went for lunch for the first time and was happy to see there were gluten free options on the lunch menu as well. My only complaint is that some of my favorite menu items have disappeared or been reimagined quite regularly and that can be disappointing.

Yelp
On our way back from San Diego on our animal rescue mission, we were searching for a vegan spot for a late lunch. We found The Plot in Oceanside, which had amazing reviews and photos, so we decided to give them a try. We were extremely pleased with our choice! Not only was all the food delicious, but we also discovered that this place is zero-waste and focuses on sustainability. They serve almost all their vegetables from their beautiful garden in the patio section and the back of the restaurant. Speaking of zero waste, they have the tiniest trash bucket in the kitchen, which is unheard of in the service industry, because everything is either composted or recycled at The Plot. The staff was incredibly kind and knowledgeable about the restaurant's concept. They take pride in working there and contributing to environmental betterment. Our fabulous waitress and the other staff members, who have been vegans for many years, were also very informative. They were so gracious to us the entire time My husband and I, being very health-conscious and advocates for animal rights, were delighted that they did not skimp on their plant protein! The portion of protein was much more generous than what we're used to at other restaurants, even from when we were omnivores. On top of the amazing service, they gifted us a mouthwatering dessert for the long journey home I cannot recommend this place enough! Vegans, the vegan-curious, and even omnivores must try this place. You will all leave with smiles on your faces. Trust me!

Yelp
Olive oil cake ... where can you find a dish like this!!! The plot has various ingredients you won't find in many restaurants

Yelp
The best vegan food I have ever had! Ruby was the most amazing server ever and had the best recommendations. The sitting area is beautiful and welcoming and overall just a wonderful way to spend the day

Yelp
What a great vegan option in North San Diego! The food was thoughtfully crafted and their items are made in-house, even their hot sauces and ketchup. Their take on sriracha was the best of the hot sauce trio they brought out. I ordered their special of the day, banana flower blossom sandwich with fries. The fries were fresh-made and good. The sandwich was good too, although it was a big portion and I couldn't finish it in one sitting. The employees were friendly. The restaurant interior was not pretentious and felt comfortable. They have outside dining options as well. There's a lot of street parking available.

Yelp
WOW!!! The Plot is one of the best plant based restaurants I have been too. it's amazing how they make healthy food with a comfort food twist . The decor makes you want to stay there the whole day. Very industrial modern minimalist and spotless. And last, but not least, our server Ruby Ten Stars for her for being so much fun and making my day with her kindness. I can't wait to experience the brunch menu next weekend

Yelp
First time visiting from Phx I was so excited for actual sit down vegan food!! The atmosphere was gorgeous it was so nice out we chose to eat out doors. 2 vegetarians, an Omni and a vegan walk into a bar..... ok it's not a joke first for appies we had truffle fries they were amazing lettuce wraps they were a special not sure if they were on the menu but they were so fresh and delicious. Also got the roll not sure the name. If you like fresh whole plant based food this is definitely the spot! The Omni ordered the meatless loaf it came with potatoes. He was expecting it to be more like meat textured as opposed to veggie based which could have easily been avoided if he actually read the description under "Meatless Loaf" sorry boo. Everything is made to order it doesn't get any fresher they even have a garden the veggies ordered the Korean bbq I believe. It was all so beautiful. I ordered biscuits and gravy my only complaint is that the flavor took me back to chicken pot pie more so than biscuits and gravy. Where biscuits and gravy usually has sausage. It was really good either way. Definitely hitting up this place next visit. Oh and I almost forgot the Troubadour drink was excellent, service was great, I will be back!!

Yelp
We stopped in for dinner on a drive from LA to San Diego. There are a few reasons we will not return: 1. The waiter seemed to know little about the menu. When asked about the soup for the day, he had to check. When he said squash soup, I asked if it had cream, and he had no idea. 2. After we ordered, the waiter returned to say that one item was not available. I ordered another. Unfortunately, he did not take the unavailable item off the bill. 3. My entree was brought 7-8 minutes before my husband's entree. This should never happen. 4. After one bite of the soup, I decided not to eat it. It had blackened bits in it and tasted burned. When the waiter cleared, he asked if I didn't like the soup, and I explained. He replied that the chef likes to char his vegetables. Well, that might have been something he could have told me if he knew anything about the menu. 5. The unavailable item remained on the bill. We were given only a total with no itemization. After we left, I realized that the amount was way too high and we phoned. They said they would credit it back. Almost one week later, that hasn't happened. And finally, the food was meh. There are many better options out there. I'd skip The Spot and find somewhere else.

Yelp
Okay... I've only been once for brunch, but the food was so good! The chilaquiles were loaded with flavor (we added avocado), and the queso on them was great. The biscuits and gravy is not exactly traditional, but each element was delicious. The biscuit, the house made sausage from lentils and rice, and the gravy were a delicious symphony of flavors. I really loved the maple syrup drizzle on that dish... Fun balance of salty & sweet. This spot is on my list for a return visit the next time I'm in the San Diego area!

Yelp
**Spoiler Alert! The Plot is great!** I'd quite like to give 4.5 stars, which is The Plot's current rating, but as it stands I'll give 5 because eating there was a really nice experience and the service was top notch. A friend and I arrived for dinner around 8pm on a Friday evening. Here's what we had: Her: two glasses of the Rocco Chenin Blanc ($9 each) To share: Crunchy Roll ($13.50) To share: Späm masubi maki roll ($14.50) Her: Caesar, add chickën ($18.50) Our subtotal came to $65.14 (including the addition of "1% for Zero" @$0.64.) After tax, dinner was $70.46, and we each paid a little over $40 including tip. For a nifty vegan dinner, not too bad. Funnily enough, while I'd been most excited for vegan sushi, I ended up liking her chickën Caesar the best! (The full menu is plant-based, and "meat" is spelled with umlauts on the vowels likë sö to denote meatlessness.) The sushi was nice. Our server was on point recommending the späm masubi roll. The crunchy roll was fair. But the sushi was more pretty than practical, sliced quite thinly and not rolled well. The Caesar, on the other hand, was expertly seasoned and the tofu chickën was fantastic. I live in Santa Barbara; if I lived closer I'd be ordering that dish at least once a month! In addition, our server was super. I didn't get her name, but she was so kind and helpful. I'm allergic to cashews, which are a common ingredient in vegan cooking and are widely used at The Plot. The server helpfully checked with the kitchen and let me know every single dish I could order--not only those without the "nut" marker on the menu, but also those that are prepared using shared kitchen space and equipment. She attentively yet not overbearingly checked in on us while we ate, and chatted with my friend and I at the end of the meal. I'd like to go back and try more of the menu options, as well as brunch! No plot holes here. Maybe just roll the sushi a little tighter.
