The 33 Best Restaurants In Melbourne 2023

"A night out at 1800 Lasagne is a guaranteed good time. The joyful Italian restaurant started out as a delivery service only for those in the know, run out of an old Holden hatchback. The candle-lit, brick-and-mortar version adds romance and nostalgia to the mix with brick archways, checkered tablecloths, and some of Melbourne’s best DJs on record duty. The pork-and-beef lasagne is big on silky bechamel, and there’s an eggplant option for vegetarians. There’s no shortage of amaro, chianti, or prosecco either. If it’s drinkable, delicious, and Italian, you’ll likely find it here." - ellen fraser

A great way to spend a cold Sunday afternoon with live Jazz from 4.30pm that comes with delicious food and drinks including mocktails. Really sorry to hear 1800 Lasagna is closing. What a loss! Signature dish of meat lasagne and garlic bread didn’t disappoint nor did the exceptional service. The dark chocolate gelato topped with raspberries and pistachios was a delightful way to finish off the meal. Thank you to the team including front and back of house staff. We’ll be back to try the other dishes soon. From the other tables they looked just fab.

I just want to qualify my 3-star rating for the food. It is purely based on a personal preference. The food was actually quite tasty but I personally just didn't like the way it was prepared. We ordered the ragu, pesto and carbonara. The ragu was fine - rigatoni and ragu was tasty and cooked as expected. For the pesto, it was done more as a basil emulsion and the pine nuts were scattered in whole across the dish. It resulted in a dish where the pasta sat in a thinnish runny sauce - while it tasted ok, I didn't like the mouth-feel. I prefer my pesto in the more traditional method - where the pesto is more like a oil-based paste with the pine nuts crushed through it. For the carbonara, again it tasted ok, but something about how it felt more like an oily emulsion, rather than having a silky yolky dressing in the spaghetti. I reiterate that it's purely personal preference that's behind this rating and review. The final point is regarding the pricing - I felt it was a bit on the high side for a casual suburban eatery - $30 for the pesto and low $32 for the ragu and carbonara. The portion sizing was very generous though, but perhaps because I didn't enjoy the way the dishes were cooked, it did feel more steep for me for my experience. Otherwise, the setting was beautiful (rustic, old school) and service very good. The place is obviously a local institution in Northcote and has its loyal following, so all the best to the owner and staff. Hope this review reads as being honest and constructive, and not critical and destructive - I fully own it as being based on personal preference as opposed to an actual issue with the food itself.

Absolutely delicious Lasagna. The ragu meat(beef & pork) was tender and flavourful, with a smooth velvet rich tomato base. The pasta was very well cooked and soft, not over layered like some. The bechamel sauce was smooth and not overpowering. The top layer was crispy and added extra flavour and texture to the dish. It was a completely fresh taste and not overcooked. The lovely lady who seats you is amazing and very friendly. Her quality service and professionalism were excellent. Book a table as the place was filling up fast(5:30pm) and by the time I left, only the outside tables were available for walkins as the bookings were constant. Well worth the price and will be returning each Melbourne work trip.

Love the tiramisu, it's so well balanced and smooth. The pipe rigate was also a highlight, thinking about the sauce just makes me crave it more, and pasta perfectly al dente. Cant fault the service at all, lovely people.

3.5 stars. The lasagna is good as it comes with a crispy layer, which is the height of lasagna land. However, I wish some layers inside or the sides had some crispy edges going on. The pork and beef sauce is good. Overall a good meal and a nice lasagna. I wish someone would ask me what I thought at some point during my meal. I ate at 4pm, so the place wasn't busy with customers.

The perfect spot for a cozy meal and cool vibes. We went on a Sunday evening before 5pm. Love jazz matched perfectly with the vibe and the food is just simple and fantastic. Great prices and the service is relax and friendly. The classic lasanha is a must, togue ter with the stracciatella & tomatoes, so so good! Great prices and we are definitely coming back. Booking recommended once we arrive at 5:30pm and got the last walk-in spot on a Sunday night.

This place became one of our favourites after our very first visit. Fantastic food at a pretty reasonable price for the quality and atmosphere - just a great place to celebrate anything big or small. Don't overlook the 'good bread and butter'.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had food that blew me away - this was a fantastic lasagna, possibly the best I’ve ever had. Every element of the dish (the bechamel, the crispy bits on top, the meat sauce) was executed perfectly and so delicious on their own, and the end result when you combine them all is this masterpiece.
