"This immaculately kept bistro is set in the heart of a pretty Lake District village and its name is a reference to the year the property was first built as the local blacksmith’s. Menus showcase seasonal local ingredients in well-executed, modern British dishes. Convivial service and seven comfortable bedrooms further add to the appeal." - Michelin Inspector

We stayed for 2 nights DBB on their special Birthday Package deal. Excellent value for money as dinner included both nights - had the 3 course menu on the 1st night which was excellent and the 7 course taster menu on the 2nd night which was outstanding. Opted for the additional wine flights which complimented each course perfectly. The stand out course was the Nordic Halibut but there were very clever twists with a transitional course of "Jammy Dodger" which eased you effortlessly towards the dessert courses. ||We stayed in bedroom 2 which was small but perfectly formed with an ensuite shower and a view towards the Main Street in Pooley Bridge. Could sit and watch the world go by! Well appointed room with very comfortable bed.||Breakfast was selected the evening before and was all ready and freshly cooked as you were seated at the table the following morning. Consequently, it was very tasty and beautifully presented with lots of tea/coffee and toast. ||The entire team were a credit to themselves and the management. They were very attentive and engaging. Very relaxed informal dining with extremely high standards on both evenings. The quality of the food, surroundings and staff was fantastic. I feel there may be a Michelin Star in the offing.....

Went for a weekend on the birthday deal, what a lovely experience! From the warm welcome on arrival to the clean, comfortable room overlooking the main street (pleasantly surprised how little traffic noise we heard overnight) to the superb fine dining experience. We had the 3 course menu on the first night, attentive service, loved the egg snacks and the chocolate desert. The seven course taster menu on the second night was impeccable, each course a taste experience, described on presentation, beautifully complemented by the wine flight. Highlights were the lamb tartare, the Johnny Hall pork and the halibut. That Michelin star can’t be far away 😊. |Breakfast is pre-ordered and served freshly prepared at the time you book so no busy times or waiting. The full Cumbrian is a must, set us up for a day on the fells. Plenty of choice and generous portions. |All the staff were great and obviously love working there!

This is a wonderful hotel with welcoming and attentive staff.||We arrived at this hotel late on a Friday evening as we were taking part in Ullswater Trail race the following morning. We were greeted with a warm and friendly welcome, and quickly shown to our bedroom. The room was decorated to a high standard and we were impressed with the attention to detail from the locally sourced bathroom soaps/ shampoos to the 'Indulgent Hot Chocolate' and gingerbread waiting for us in our bedroom. We had to leave very early the next morning so were too early for breakfast, nevertheless we found a table set for us at 6am with a good luck message and some juice and cereals so we didn't miss out. Since we were in a rush that morning, I accidentally left my Apple Watch in the bedroom. The staff kindly went above and beyond to return this to me and it arrived by Special Delivery later that week. We will be back again next year!

Had dinner bed and breakfast. Bedroom tiny but modern clean and well furnished, reasonable value for money.|We have eaten here at least 4 or 5 times before and have been big fans. The food was again very good, but there is now no a la carte menu, with very limited fixed price menu, and I would not have chosen the starter and main I ending up eating. In the past, for the quality of food, this place was an absolute bargain, but those days are gone. We paid over £200 including a couple of glasses of wine, which admittedly is not outrageously expensive for food of this quality, but the dining room with a plain conservatory overlooking an untidy garden and bare topped tables, are not the setting that this price bracket requires. Also, in the past, Mark would be front of house and would go the extra mile to welcome diners, suggesting wines, offering tastes etc. That was missing on this trip.

Visited on 28/04/24 and had the set menu as a party of 4. The service was immaculate from start to finish from the staff who deal with us. The young lady who presented the cuisine was knowledgable and friendly and the gentleman who served the wine wonderfully articulated how each of the pairings would (and did) complement the meals we had selected. The evening was everything we could have wished for regarding the excellent food and wine and for myself personally, was made even better by the experience of having wines paired so beautifully with each individual dish. Please pass on my compliments to the staff tonight for their exceptional culinary knowledge that really elevated the evening for us. Will highly recommend!

Excellent rooms that were well stocked with quality supplies. Comfortable. Food in restaurant was amazing. Small courses on a seasonal three course menu. Satisfied as a few extras fill the gaps between service. A great treat
