"Though completed at the turn of the last century, thanks to its neo-Gothic style Ghent’s old Central Post Office looks hundreds of years older than that. 1898 The Post, a new renovation of this beautifully preserved structure, has got a bit more than its fair share." - Mark Fedeli

1898 The Post

"What did you think of the hotel when you arrived? This is the type of hotel you'd imagine in a storied Parisian neighborhood, all spiral staircases and antiques. It is sexy and classy, and you would travel to Ghent just so you could say that you had stayed there. Who else do you see at the hotel?Know the Antwerp Six? The fashionable bunch that dominated the global style scene in the '80s and '90s? Their contemporary equivalents. Beautiful, interesting people with exceptional taste—and a better wardrobe that anyone you know. Sounds cool. Now tell us all about your room. The rooms are dark and sultry, and reminiscent of, say, a pied-à-terre in Montmartre in the 1920s: deep-green painted walls, heavy grey curtains, dark wood antiques. The beds are crisp and white, though, and pop as a result of the room's palette. Perhaps intentionally, it makes the bed the focal point of the room, which any place you're overnighting in should, really. The split-level Carriage Room feels more like home, with soft pink linen sofas that are magic against those green walls. What about food and drinks, and is there room service? Can't speak to room service, but the bar is special. Be prepared for the most on-point old fashioned in town, and a Flemish-speaking crowd whose wardrobe you'll want to steal. Sold. So, bottom line: worth it?The Post 1898 is the type of hotel that can make or reinvent a destination. In the past, Ghent was likely a day trip from Antwerp or Brussels; now, it's a definite overnighter—if not weekender—thanks to this spot." - CNT Editors

Northern Belgium Is Our New Favorite Food and Design Destination

"The 38-room boutique hotel, an imposing neo-Gothic landmark that was originally built for the 1913 World’s Fair, is reason enough to overnight here."

We spent about 2 weeks in 3 different countries for our summer holiday, and staying in this hotel was the absolute highlight of the trip! We stayed in the tower suite, and it was a complete dream come true. The view of the city from the room is unmatched, the romance of it all was just overwhelming. The staff was absolutely lovely and SO helpful.

Fantastic experience in room 23. Hotel is in prime central location within 10 minutes walking distance of everywhere you want to go in Ghent. The staff were wonderful, from check-in, to the bar, to room service. (We did not breakfast there). My wife was constantly commenting on the tastefulness of the decor and their fresh squeezed orange juice & cappuccino's. The bed was comfortable, and the AC worked well. We did not hear any noise from adjoining rooms. I can't think of a single part of our stay that didn't exceed expectations.

The hotel is situated right in the middle of Gent, making it easy to walk anywhere in the beautiful city. The staff were super nice and accommodating, including the awesome bartenders at The Cobbler. Highly recommend staying here if you visit.

Absolutely GEM of a hotel!! This hotel, as you can probably tell from the name that it is in an old post office. It is a bit quite difficult to get to. We did take a taxi, but found out the entrance for guests is around the back on the cobblestone. You will need to go up to an elevator to find the lobby. The inside of the hotel is very cool, and very themed towards the old post office vibe that it used to be. ||The staff at the front desk is very nice and accommodating, and they will walk you to your room and show you everything. We had a room that was a king bed loft style, with the bathroom on the second level. They had cocktails little treats and stuff in the mini bar in the room. The bed was very comfortable. The windows opened up and looked out right into the city center. Wow it was beautiful and the perfect location!!! ||There are plenty of things within walking distance to the hotel, including the Castle, bars and restaurants, the river bus stop tram stop, etc. The hotel has an on-site bar and restaurant. We had a few cocktails from the bar. It was super cozy and a really good time! It appeared a lot of people from the city were there so it was a highly sought after bar to go to. Overall I really recommend staying at the post even if it’s a little bit more expensive it’s totally worth it!!

Super helpful and friendly staff, nothing was to much when it came to assistance and advice.||A beautiful building decorated with such style and class, the rooms were amazing and full of lovely little touches that make you feel special. The cocktail bar is a highlight, again tastefully decorated without being over the top. Great choice of cocktails and some specialities as well. The outside Cobblers bar and Terrace are a fantastic place to sit and watch all the activities on the river, bridges and quayside promenade.||

Classy, unique, quiet, calming and quirky. These all describe the awesome hotel that is 1898 The Post. Check out the Cobbler Bar for an amazing selection of cocktails all with their own unique story. The rooms are clean quiet elegant and comfortable. Had an amazing nights sleep to top it all off. The expense is WELL WORTH IT!

The stay was short but nevertheless unforgettable! A very friendly and refreshingly down-to-earth crew is running this unique, surreal and inspiring place. I immersed in an atmosphere, that carried me away in a fairytale kind of world. If Jules Vernes knew this place, '1898 The Post' would have been the perfect stay for Mr. Fogg, who travelled the world in 80 days...So glad, the place is not fiction! Thanks for the nice experience!

Yelp
Excellent hotel right in the center of Ghent. Rooms are spectacular with high ceilings and lofts. Very up to date from a technology standpoint, yet blended with the spirit of the original post office. The cobbler restaurant and bar scene are a delight. Lastly, this hotel has the most amazing front desk staff, they assist with your bags, show you to the restaurant, explain the hotel and city features, truly outstanding. Julie at the front desk is a delight, energetic and competent.

Yelp
1898 may be the most charming hotel I've stayed at. Located in the heart of Ghent, its convenient proximity allows for tons of leisure nearby including visiting bars, lounges, restaurants, cafes, chocolatiers, cathedrals, and castles. Similar to much of the central area in Ghent, it maintains a very unique, historical atmosphere. Staff may dress as if they're in the early 20th century for instance. There are older, castle-like spiral staircases leading up to different corridors, including an Honor Bar with snacks and drinks you can take and pay for at a later time. Walls are adorned with photographs and history of the building, which has gone through various transitions such as a prison, a post office (hence the name), and finally a hotel with a sizable shopping mall and restaurants at the base floor on the opposite end. There's a bar/restaurant that's pretty popular located next to the reception area, where you can choose to pay for breakfast or get cozy with friends and grab drinks. Hotel amenities include tea, coffee, water, the usual toiletries, a beautiful desk to get some work done or draw inspiration for your project or perhaps your next novel. There are several props including parchment paper with etched ink, a magnifying glass, several books, and more. I went with the double story room which has an upstairs shower area and sink. This place was very spacious, with a large, comfortable bed, giant windows overlooking all the city action to capture the sights, sounds, and fresh air which provided a wonderful ambience. Hotel staff are very friendly, stemming from reception to the maids. They're quick to service and replace anything you may need. Parking is $25 Euros a night in their own private space just a couple blocks away, so inquire about it and you will receive very thorough instructions on how to get in as it may be easy to miss. If you're looking to bring back some chocolates that Belgium is well known for, head over to Van Hoorebeke Chocolatier nearby for some beautifully gift wrapped boxes for your friends and loved ones. Be sure to also grab some of the freshly made hot cocoa, which may just be the best you'll ever have in your entire life.

Yelp
A fantastic boutique hotel in the center of old town in a repurposed post office building dating from the early 1900s. We stayed two nights in early December a week ahead of the holiday market. Our room, #15, a king room (aka "letter" room) was wonderfully cozy with intimate spaces for the bedroom and the sink and roomy modern rain shower in a fun upstairs loft-totally unique. The room had at least a 20 ft ceiling with massive windows and shades out of a dickens novel. The brooding dark color accentuated the warm feeling and the quirky historical reproductions used to decorate the entire hotel gave the feeling you were staying in a cross between the Smithsonian and Hogwarts-we loved it immediately. While the building itself faces a square and grand church, the entry is around back on the river side in a turret. After walking through a picture post card courtyard all decked out for the holidays you climb up two long flights of curving stairs to reception on level +1 although there is a tiny elevator for you and your luggage. Our room was on this level down the narrow hallway and behind a door with key-card secured access. Our room rate included a sumptuous breakfast buffet overloaded with local foods and European classics. In the later afternoon this space, The Cobbler, transforms into the hippest cocktail bars in town with waits to get in (tip: be sure to ID yourself as a guest as they save a few spots for those staying and you may get to just skip the line). Bottom line: absolutely loved our stay here and at around 360€ felt this was a great value given its location within east walking distance to all the key sights, restaurants and shopping. HIGHLY recommended

Yelp
Literally Howarts in a hotel. Everything is so beautiful, especially the interior design. In each room there is an upstairs with the bathroom and you can see the bed from above. The shower is a rain shower. they also havw a selection of alcohol in each room that you have to pay for. I HIGHLY recommend staying here if you come to Belgium, it makes your dtay that much more magical

Yelp
This place is about a year old and it's amazing! The staff is great, the rooms are nice and the overall vibe of the place is perfect! It's right at the center with parking near by. You can catch a boat tour at the back along the water and there are cafes everywhere!

Yelp
I loved every minute at this hotel! We had spent the day traveling from the US and the staff were super welcoming as we arrived. The room was FANTASTIC! The perfect size for the two of us and the style fit the history of this beautiful place. We ended up walking around to just explore and everything in the hotel is stylized to give a nod to it's history but also contemporary twist. It's located in the central part of Ghent, right next to a canal which makes it fantastic for us travelers to explore the city on foot. I can't wait to come back and stay here!

Yelp
For our single night in town, we decided to stay at 1898 The Post. Aside from reading glowing reviews online, it's also a very solid pick given its location: it's right in the heart of central Ghent, with the red tram line (the 1) just a block or two away, connecting you directly to the train station. At the time of year we visited as well (December), it's also right next to where the festive Christmas market is set up. The entrance to the hotel - at least while checking in (once you have a room key, you can swipe in right off the central square) - is on the canal. There's a small elevator you can jam yourself and your bags into, or you can climb a few flights up the spiral staircase to the entrance to the hotel. Despite being in the old post office, the hotel itself is very compact: you have a lounge/dining room just as you enter in (The Cobbler), followed by the front desk - and outside of the rooms, which are on the southeastern corner of the building, that is it. As such, despite being in a grand-looking building, the hotel very much has the look and feel of a cozy boutique hotel. The folks at the front desk were very friendly and spoke English very well, and they were glad to hold our bags while we ventured out into town (unfortunately, early check-in was unavailable given the hotel was fully booked up). The decor has a lot of literary and postal themes to it, which is fun and keeps with the spirit of the hotel. This extends to the room as well, which I found to be absolutely fantastic to stay in. The room itself has a lot of books and other retro touches that make it feel like a study. There's a minibar that had several small bottles of liquor, along with bitters and a lemon that are inviting you to make a cocktail. All of this is in the downstairs portion of our room (which was a duplex of sorts). Upstairs is where the bed is, along with two sinks (a 'nice to have') and a shower room that is open air but is quite spacious by European standards. The only negative about the layout is that the toilet is on the lower floor, making it a bit annoying to hike down the stairs to use it and return if you are in bed. The views out the windows are quite nice, and even better, the soundproofing is top-notch - despite going to sleep with the raucous drinking in the holiday market picking up, we had no problems at all falling asleep and could barely hear any noise at all. Aside from really enjoying our short time in town so much that I'd like to return ASAP, I can't wait to come back and stay at this hotel again. The ambiance perfectly matches the old elegance of central Ghent, while it has all the modern amenities and furnishings that you would expect of a luxury hotel. Perhaps the only thing missing is a fitness center - but I think that's a small mark off of what is a wonderfully delightful hotel to stay in.

Yelp
Really nice and charming place off the main street in Ghent. A little hard to find, but they serve good drinks and have a great atmosphere. Nice place to rest your feet while exploring the city!
