10 Restaurants Worth the Drive From Philadelphia | Eater Philly

"Nestled in the middle of the Brandywine Valley’s breathtaking botanical gardens, this fine-dining establishment is just as elegant as the meticulously manicured grounds around it. The menu at 1906 is a smart mix of classic American dishes and more modern additions reflecting the bounty of the surrounding agricultural areas. The kitchen closes at 7:30 p.m. nightly, which leaves enough time for a serene post-dinner stroll around the property. Tickets to Longwood Gardens are required." - Caroline Coral

We had lunch at the 1906 while visiting the gardens. First of all the gardens are spectacular! Lunch was spectacular! It was a little pricy but considering the quality and innovative menu options well worth it! Our server was just wonderful! Overall a great experience!

Google
Really cool experience to eat overlooking the fountain! Incredible service, and we loved the local Kennett Square mushroom dishes. They have seasonal menus utilizing vegetables grown on-site at the gardens! You do need to purchase a ticket to the gardens to get into the restaurant. I made a reservation about a week in advance-there’s also bar seating which I assume is walk-in. Some favorites were the whitetail - a pear martini, the mushroom tagliatelle, and the little gems Caesar. They accommodated my 1 .5 year old nephew with a great kids menu. Would love to come back for dinner so we could try more things.

Google
Stunning view, you can watch the fountain show from the restaurant. Outstanding service and good food. Our waitress went above and beyond. Lots of fresh mushrooms and locally sourced edible flowers. You’re literally dining in the garden! I can’t think of one bad thing about this place. LOVED IT! You do need to have tickets or memberships of the garden to dine here.

Google
5/5 - Exceptional dining at 1906 at Longwood Gardens! The brioche was fluffy and divine with delicious honey butter. Paired perfectly with the earthy mushroom pate. Risotto was creamy and flavorful, branzino cooked to perfection. The lobster omelette was luxurious and the crab spaghetti was amazing. Everything was fresh and delicious. Impeccable service in a charming atmosphere—highly recommended! Also, if you’re a Longwood member, you get a 10% discount!

Google
Firstly, this is completely different than the old 1906. It was relocated to the space under the conservatory and is A LOT bigger. Honestly, it may be the biggest fine dining restaurant in the area. That said the food, atmosphere, and service were top notch. There was a slight delay in getting seated but they were incredibly apologetic and comped us a drink. The prices vary from reasonably expensive to VERY expensive ($85 prime rib). That’s said the food is OUTSTANDING, unusual and unique and is not for picky eaters. We chose the prix fix which came with 5 courses. From the salad made with ingredients from Longwood’s gardens to perfectly cooked duck to a mushroom shaped dessert that was AMAZING, we were not disappointed. We will definitely eat here again in the future.

Google
1906 at Longwood Gardens is a superb restaurant, with a very nice garden next to it (ha). The ambiance effortlessly blends elegance with comfort, creating a unique dining experience that's a feast for the senses. It's not just about great food; it's about the whole atmosphere. The garden views elevate the dining experience, making it a perfect spot for any special occasion or just a lovely meal out. It's like dining in a Ramsay restaurant...

Truly a fine dinning experience. All our food was elegantly presented as well as had perfectly paired flavor profiles. The portions are certainly petite, however, each dish is meant to be savored and appreciated. The cocktails were light and refreshing- and they didn’t skimp on the libations- each item we ordered was perfection on a plate. Additionally, the beautiful views of the gardens, fountains, and attentive service- 1906, is worth visiting entirely on its own. Although this restaurant is expensive- it is worth every penny!

Google
Ensure you make a reservation! We went on a Saturday night and were able to be sat earlier than our reservation time which was great! Our server was attentive and able to walk us through any questions we had about our meal. The menus on their website are accurate and their drink list is solid. It's a great place to have a celebratory meal and if you're a Longwood Gardens member, show your card for a small discount off your meal!

Yelp
Our 4:00 pm 1906 reservations were actually canceled by the time we arrived at Longwood Gardens and learned the String Queens outdoor concert was also canceled. We received a text informing us of the cancellations, but proceeded to 1906 to sit for appetizers and cocktails, order our entrees, and then head back to Central PA. John, our server, accommodated us nicely for whatever we chose. We even got to see Natalie, one of our favorite 1906 servers who has been at Longwood for nearly 25 years. With the cancellation of the outdoor String Queens Concert, very few people were in the restaurant. We enjoyed our Appetizers ( Caesar and beet salads) and my Feeling Punchy cocktail, and we took home our Bone-in ribeye steak.

Yelp
Had an exceptional experience at 1906 Fine Dining for my friend's intimate wedding dinner. The space is beautiful, decorated with many plants and flowers. The private room that we had full view of their mushrooms, which was whimsical. Each dish served was perfectly paired together, and they serve an American menu rooted in seasonality, sustainability, and locality, with many of the ingredients grown in their Ornamental Kitchen Garden. Finally, I cannot stop raving about the service. Our servers were extremely attentive, made sure our drinks never ran out, described each dish in detail, and were extremely mindful of the dietary restrictions of the group. Absolutely a great experience to walk through Longwood Gardens before and after dinner.

Yelp
I had a phenomenal dining experience at 1906. You should absolutely treat yourself to a meal here if you are spending the day in Longwood Gardens. The dishes are inspired and made by ingredients from the garden. It's delightful, fresh and elevated. We started with the pull-apart brioche with honey butter. This was the most beautiful butter I have ever eaten. Decorated with edible flowers and drizzles of local honey, I could not get enough on each piece of fluffy brioche. We also enjoyed the heirloom tomatoes and chilled summer corn soup. These were both refreshing from the summer heat. We opted for two herbal elixirs to drink. These are a great option if you want something fun and bubbly without alcohol in the middle of the day. For our main dish, we tried the summer risotto trio - a kale, carrot and vegetable risotto sprinkled with cracked pepper and edible flowers. This dish was as beautiful as it was delicious. This is a great addition to the seasonal summer menu. We enjoyed a side of brussel sprouts and grilled watermelon alongside our main. The brussel sprouts were shredded with a hint of lemon that complimented the risotto. The watermelon was paired with a whipped feta and seasoned with dill and tajin. It was a sweet and spicy combination that lightened the meal. You cannot skip dessert here. Their signature caramelia cake is absolutely adorable! The entire mushroom, chocolate rocks and coconut leaves are edible. This is the show stopper of an already incredible dining experience. And if you are looking for something extra sweet, order a scoop of sorbet or gelato to go along with it. I highly recommend dining during one of the daily fountain shows. The music is piped into the restaurant, so you can enjoy the magnificent show while enjoying your meal from inside. Thank you to our server who made sure we had a fantastic view of the show, and gave great menu recommendations.

Yelp
Surprised to see negative reviews. This place is amazing. Lots of room for those of us that don't want to make a reservation. You can sit at the bar or at a table in an area designated for walk-ins. The restaurant has amazing views and you can even watch the fountain show from your seat. The drinks and food are amazing. Highly recommend the heirloom martini and the steak tartare (comes out smoking). The servers, bartenders, and staff are all wonderful and very friendly. Highly recommend!

Yelp
For our trip to longwood garden, we made the reservation for 1906, just in time for their summer menu. Not sure when, but they moved to under the conservatory, so it does have more spaces and have a better view now. The atmosphere is pretty relaxing. Foodwise, it's all pretty distinctive with natural themes; but nothing really stands out; everything is between OK to good. Still, not expecting too much inside the garden park. Service, on the other hand, really shines. The servers are very attentive and professional.

Yelp
This is such an incredible dining experience! From the cocktails to lunch to dessert it was all delicious! We even got to watch the fountain show from the window while we ate it was the best of everything! The roasted chicken was amazing, they are very good about helping you navigate food allergies (my family has a lot!) our server was so friendly and attentive and very fast! The entire restaurant is full of gorgeous live floral arrangements! I can't say enough good things about this place I cannot wait to come back!

Yelp
Made reservations 2 weeks before Mother's Day because I heard that it gets pretty busy. Beautiful ambiance. Expected nothing less. Service was exceptional. They all have a keen eye & fast reflexes to make sure our dining experience was spectacular. No complaints whatsoever. Food was pretty decent. I did receive a phone call a week prior to confirm my reservation. I thought that was a nice touch. The receptionist wanted to make sure that I know they were going to be having a prix fixed menu for Mother's Day weekend. I did wish they have a separate menu for people who didn't want what was on their prix fixed menu though. I've heard wonderful things so I did set the bar a little high. Anyway, I am looking forward to going back again when it's not on a busy holiday weekend.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with views of the water fountains! Service was friendly and knowledgeable. Food was great and the presentations were wonderful. Great cocktails. I had the basil Collin's and it was refreshing. I'd definitely recommend for a date night or girls lunch!

Yelp
Made reservations mid week and decided to get the Chef's tasting menu. The price is very reasonable for a 5 course meal! Most of the vegetables are grown at LWG, some of the mushrooms are imported from Japan but that's ok because I love shitake mushrooms! My server, Patrick, was attentive and made sure the Spaghetti alla Chitarra was included in my tasting menu since that's the dish I really wanted to try. The menu changes often depending on the season and can be different depending on the day. Ambiance is great! Decor simple and elegant. I'm definitely coming back!

Yelp
My family and I just ate here on New Years Eve. It was wonderful! We did have an interesting visit from the start due to someone who needs secret service when they are out and about, wink wink. It made for a weird vibe because that's all people could talk about. But, that is no fault to 1906. The entire ambiance of 1906 is breath taking. I loved the furniture, colors, decor, and the large windows let in so much light and offer great views. The sunset was beautiful. The bathroom hall is nice as well. Single stalls. The food was fantastic. There was five of us and we had many items off the menu. The attention to detail and the delivery of the food was an art at times. We have no complaints about anything. The one item on the menu our entire table enjoyed the Roasted Green Circle Chicken. It was brined in honey and lavender. The flavor was delightful! It is pricy but, understandably. I'd pay $80 for that chicken again ha! I highly recommend adding 1906 to your, "places to try."

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant inside Longwood Garden that I didn't even know was there. You can make reservations ahead of time but need to buy the ticket into the garden separately. We were able to walk in and wait for a table, which took about 30-40 minutes. Everything we had was delicious and beautiful. The earthy mushroom flavors of all the dishes was really impressive. And the desserts were amazing!
google avatar

Yelp
Service was incredible. Ambiance was beautiful. The person who had scallops said it was the best scallops they ever had. The two who had steak salads put the steaks in the top 3 they've ever had. Everyone enjoyed and had fun with the pull apart brioche. The bill was less expensive than we expected.

Yelp
Everything about 1906 at Longwood Gardens is top notch. The food, service and ambiance are wonderful. We ordered the tasting menu. It was well balanced and delicious. Our table was at the windows with a view of the fountain show.

Yelp
The good: beautiful setting in a lovely garden that is well worth visiting with impeccable service. The bar served well crafted drinks, a Cosmo and an Old Fashioned. The not so good - the food. That's a problem. My friend had halibut and I had the duck, we both chose the mushroom soup and we split a dessert. The presentation of the mushroom soup, the mushrooms in the bottom of the bowl with a non-dairy scream sauce poured over by a server, was charming. The soup had a dark flavor, not at all bad, but no other strong flavor. It needed salt. It needed other flavors. The halibut and the duck portions were small. They were small period, but especially for the price of nearly $40 an entree. My duck, three slice of breast with a sauce, was flavorless. Not exactly sure how they did it, but it barely tasted of duck. As I ate this, I realized if I didn't order something else, I'd be hungry. So we ordered a loaf of bread, which was nicely seasoned and warm with flavored butter. My friend really liked her halibut but she was happy to have the bread and we are most of it, taking home a few pieces. Note that there a large variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes. On to dessert. We chose to share a Caramelia, which was chocolate mousse, espresso caramel, cocoa soil. It was very pretty but overly sweet. Again, it all looks beautiful but it's just not as good as you'd expect it to be. To sum up, beautiful place, great service, lackluster food and small portions. For a $220 dinner, you shouldn't have to eat bread to not be hungry.

Yelp
My first experience at this restaurant was disappointing. Service is a big deal to me. I honestly would have given this restaurant only two stars because of the service but felt that a bit harsh since the food and atmosphere were well above two stars. I waited too long to be seated when there were plenty of open tables available. I waited 20 minutes for my cocktail. The server did apologize for the extended wait and did not charge me for the drink. There was way too much time between actions like receiving a menu, taking my order and then being served what I had ordered. I was seated with only a drink menu and had to wait for the server to visit the table before receiving the food menu. Why not give me the food menu right away? At least I could have been deciding on my meal while waiting for the server to make her appearance. The server, although very nice and polite, was rather scarce during most of my meal. I dined solo. I should have been in and out in about an hour, hour and a half max but ended up being there over two and a half hours. This took way from my garden exploration time. In full disclosure, this was during the busy holiday season. There was a fire alarm incident during my visit which required the guests to actually leave the building for about 15 minutes. I appreciate the circumstances but feel that service was still below what it should be. The fire alarm threw off any rhythm the staff had but should have had a minimal effect if the service level were higher to begin with. The decor was quite nice. It was very sophisticated, modern and worthy of the garden location. The overall design was good with the larger tables in the middle and smaller tables on the outer perimeter. The food was well prepared. I liked that they served items grown within the garden or locally sourced. I started with a Caesar salad and ordered the Lasagna as an entree. The lasagna was delicious and flavorful. It was prepared with locally sourced mushrooms. The portion was generous. For dessert, I ordered the Caramelia which was a chocolate mousse dessert shaped like a mushroom. Very clever plating for the dessert. It was visually appealing and delicious. My hope is that this restaurant improves on its service. It has a lot of potential. It would be a shame if it did not live up to the high standards of the garden which surrounds its location.

Yelp
We stumbled upon 1906 while visiting Longwood Gardens in PA. The restaurant gives a fine dining vibe with an inviting ambiance. The ingredients on the menu are locally sourced and fresh. We ordered a bunch of veggie small plates and everything we had was very good. My favorite was the broccolini and their house baked bread. I could literally eat two of those myself. I'll definitely dine there again next time I visit Longwood. However, The service was a bit slow. Reservations are recommended

Yelp
New restaurant is beautiful, plenty of staff running around, but not very organized. We both ordered drinks. partner was given a mixed drink instead of a glass of wine. They almost did not believe her that they got it wrong. My beer, a local brew, took forever to arrive. Paid $9 for what I call the Longwood pint, about 10-12 oz. I ordered the duck, very expensive for two pieces of meat the size of my thumb, no crispy skin, no sides, for around $39. One piece had grizzle running thru it, not much flavor either. We ordered dessert, I ordered a small ball of sherbet for $9. It arrived with a candle and Happy Birthday. It was not my birthday, so they took it back. Next, they bring TWO dishes of sherbet, each with a candle and Happy Birthday charm. They did comp her wine and the dessert. You cannot dine there without paying full admission to get into the garden, on top of the crazy high prices in this place.

Yelp
New restaurant just opened. They are obviously still working out the kinks. Beautiful new location under the conservatory. Lunch was very good and we were in no rush anyway...but it took 2 1/2 hours... yikes! Not quite as "elegant" as expected - little things, like mixing up who ordered what, giving the bill to my wife, leaving extra place settings on the table, being seated at a table set for 4 despite having a reservation for just the two of us (pet peeve). Food was excellent. The PB&J dessert was amazing.

Yelp
What an amazing experience this turned out to be, thank you to Tara and our amazing server Brittney. We got seated on an amazing table, followed by an introduction to the menu and the amazing dishes. We ordered our appetizers and each of them were out of this world. The drinks were phenomenal as well. Brittney's help and suggestions were wonderful and she was extremely patient and attentive. Our entrees came out in a lovely presentation and were delicious. And we were visiting Longwood gardens today to celebrate my sons graduation, and Brittney was already apprised of the celebration and surprised all of us with som CT as

Yelp
Delicious American food. We visited 1906 on a Saturday afternoon, and it was mostly full. The restaurant has large windows with a view of the outside, green booths and pale green cushions atop the wooden chairs, and purple flowers at the tables. Classic pop and motown music played over the speakers during our visit. I ordered the carajillo to drink, we split the brioche as a starter, and I ordered the blue oyster as my main. The carajillo was delicious with an excellent coffee flavor that was well complemented by the tequilla. The brioche was light and sweet with a sweet butter. The blue oyster dish was scrumptious with a lovely blend of flavors. Overall, I had a surprisingly lovely experience at 1906 and would highly recommend dining here for a nice lunch at Longwood Gardens.
google avatar

AB H.

Yelp
We had a great lunch today. I split the mushroom Wellington and the beef carpaccio. Both were excellent! The mushroom Wellington comes with some tender microgreens and a foamy sauce. The beef carpaccio comes with a small piece of burrata cheese and some toasts. We had the chocolate mouse dessert which comes shaped like a mushroom. It was amazing. Do not skip dessert!! The restaurant is beautiful. We had a table right next to the windows and the sun poured in. This was my second visit; the first time was close to when it opened in November. The food wasn't as good the first time- either because of what I ordered (the mushroom soup) or just because they have gotten better with time. It's a special place to have a delicious lunch while at Longwood.

Yelp
We have been longtime visitors of the gardens but I recently tried this new location of 1906 for the first time. The interior of the restaurant was decorated so beautifully, but was also very cozy at the same time. All the food was really amazing and I would definitely recommend the mushroom soup, crab pasta was to die for, and the steak was cooked perfectly. Honestly everything we tried here tasted great, and there was such an attention to detail in the presentation. For dessert you have to get the chocolate mousse as it shaped as the cutest red mushroom!
google avatar

Mandy G.

Yelp
While at Longwood, we stopped at 1906 for some cocktails. The bar was full and we didn't expect to get a table, but they squeezed us in and it was wonderful. The view of the light show outside was great, the inside is very beautiful, and the staff were all extremely accommodating and over-the-top polite. Everything is pricy, no doubt about it. That's why we ate lunch down at the cafe. But for some cocktails in the evening with the twinkly lights? Stupendous. I'd come again.
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
Truly a five star experience. 4 of us had a late evening reservation and had drinks served to us in the waiting area. The decor and vibe is very cool and sophisticated but not pretentious. I started with the Pate, velvety mushroom goodness. Another had the mushroom soup but said it could be heated up some. For my main, the French Omelet. My companions made fun of me until they saw it delivered. Beautiful and filled with Maine Lobster, bearnaise and some greens. It was delicious. My companion had duck which she said was amazing. For dessert, the Caramelia came out like a giant mushroom and the warm du pont donuts were yummy. It was expensive but it is really special and we will be back to taste more of the menu.

Alletta E.

Yelp
Everything!!!! My experiences there have all been fabulous... I love the view. Great food.... And the service has always been impeccable. I consider it A 5 star restaurant.!!!!!'

Yelp
We were excited to try 1906 in Longwood Gardens. The ambience is incredible, everything is so beautiful. Unfortunately, i think the service end needs work. Nothing was actually wrong, but the hostesses seem kind of snooty and nobody seemed very warm or inviting. Almost like the wait staff has to project a certain image and they're not terribly comfortable with it . Husband and I had cocktails that were beautifully presented in gorgeous glassware, but for the price extremely small. We started with pull apart Brioche rolls that were delightful. Probably my favorite of the evening. It came with a delicious butter . I then had the mushroom bisque, which is poured over a mound of mushrooms. It was good, but not outstanding. The mushrooms had a bit of strange texture. I couldn't tell if they were dried or roasted or what. Husband had the beet salad which he said was good. I had the Day boat scallops which were delicious and perfectly cooked, but the vegetables that came with were kind of strange- not terribly flavorful. Would not order that particular dish again. Husband got the French Omelet with lobster and it was delicious. We were too full for dessert ! I wouldn't be in a hurry to return, mostly because of how expensive it is. Would love to sit in the lounge but no one could even tell us how that works!

Yelp
Tried the recently renovated, gorgeous 1906 restaurant during a recent girls' trip to Longwood for Christmas. We had booked our reservation for 7 people months in advance (along with our Christmas tickets) and were asked to put down $25 per person to hold the table, though this did come off of our bill at the end. We were seated immediately, and though it did take a while for us to receive drinks due to the dinner rush and they did miscount our round of mushroom bisque initially, the service was otherwise fine. A few of us opted to enjoy beverages --- the Nuts and Berries and the Whitetail (with a dominant pear flavoring) were both excellent. A few of us chose the tea-infused non-alcoholic offerings and enjoyed those as well. We all started off with the Mushroom Bisque, which the restaurant is known for, and it was certainly delicious. For those who are plant based or lactose intolerant, our waitress shared that it is actually made with coconut milk! For my entree, I opted for the Mushroom Wellington as I often prefer to try items I cannot easily make at home. This was a delicious, though lighter entree with buttery pastry and smooth mushroom Duxelles, served with a side of greens. For dessert, we asked which items were shareable and were told "all of them," though I would argue that there are probably some more easily shared than others. In any case, we chose the Caramelia, which includes chocolate and salted caramel mousses encased in chocolate/white chocolate to look like a little mushroom, which was both tasty and adorable. We also order the apple, which was similarly shaped like an apple that melted under a pour of warm bourbon dulcey sauce to reveal caramel mousse and apple sorbet --- this was probably the table favorite. Longwood Gardens members also get to enjoy a discount --- just one member of the party has to show their card for your whole dinner party to receive it. Overall, a pricey but delicious place to eat with a charming atmosphere. Would definitely go back on future trips to Longwood.

Yelp
Came here for Thanksgiving dinner and food was delicious. It was a prix fixe menu for the holiday for $125 per person. 3 courses and you get to pick one. Portions were great and we were not super full. The ambiance was very nice as well and produce is from the garden at Longwood gardens.

Yelp
There are pros and cons here. Came on Monday of a holiday week for the first time. Had a 445pm reservation and was at around 515pm with 6 of us. Have the following comments... - for the price, if expect 5-star service. Instead, service was a snails pace. The brioche app for the table came within 10 minutes. Was another 30 minutes for the other apps we ordered. Our drinks (ordered same time as apps), came 15 minutes after the apps. Our entrees arrived just under 90 minutes after sitting. We ordered coffee after entrees and after 30 minutes of waiting for coffee, we asked for it to be removed and for our check. Overall, we had 2.5 courses in 2.5 hours. And the server was far from attentive. Never got to order a second round from the bar. 1/5 stars - brioche - very sharable between the 6 of us 4/5 - flower salad - while I wanted the cesar salad, I couldn't have the homemade dressing, so the server recommended the flower salad. It smelled like a bouquet on the plate which was lovely. Then it literally tasted like weeds. After nearly throwing up the third bite, I was done. 1/5 - mushroom wellington - this was phenomenal. I dream of the gravy that came with it. Was it worth $34? No but I happily paid it. 5/5 - rooibos mocktail - this was wonderful and enjoyable. 5/5 Other friends had the French omelet that they found amazing as well. At the end, the entrees and cocktails were amazing, service was miserable. The ambiance was nice with a nice view of the outside. My portion of the meal cost was about $75. I sadly do not need to return.

Yelp
Nestled in Longwood Gardens it's great to have an upscale restaurant to enjoy. Known for their mushroom soup which is flavorful albeit rather salty. I recommend the wild salmon which was well prepared and not dry. Service is friendly and quick. Prices are city prices but I think I would prefer over some burger and fries joint. Can't wait until the new iteration opens in October

Yelp
Major disappointment. 1906 is a Christmas tradition for my family and we were excited to check out the new spot. While the ambiance was nice, the service and food were horrible. Food - It tasted like mass produced catering food. Our brioche came out lukewarm (the table next to us their butter was frozen). Pretty sure my steak was not the cut it said on the menu and only had 4 small button mushrooms. Service - Where to begin, we were seated 35 minutes after our reservation time. It took another 20 minutes for our server to acknowledge us. Had to ask for a steak knife and we were never given a utensil to serve our shared side. When I asked to pack up our leftovers the waitress only packed up one item and left the others on the table. I miss the old 1906 the food was so much better and the service was never this slow. The new restaurant is pretentious (you can tell just from the menu changes) and is trying to sell itself as fine dining when it's far from it. If you wanted to give this restaurant a try do yourself a favor (save money and time) and skip this spot on your next longwood trip.

Michael P.

Yelp
I'm usually a gatekeeper, but feeling generous tonight. This restaurant continues to deliver wonderful culinary experiences! If you want huge portions, don't come here. If you want exquisitely prepared food with local ingredients, curated wines and splendid views- 1906 will not disappoint. Love this place.

Yelp
Had a lovely dinner with my sister and some friends. It is interesting that this place is only open for dinner on Friday and Saturday, I hope they open that schedule up soon. I had the Whitetail cocktail, very tasty, my sister had the Winter Chic and my friend had the Nevergreen. All were very good. The bar takes a bit of time, but they seemed to be very busy. John our server was very knowledgeable and explained all the dishes we asked about. We ordered the beef carpaccio, salmon tartare, and the artisanal cheese board. All were very good. My dinner was the little gem Caesar with white anchovies and the Spaghetti Alla Chitarra. Both were spectacular, at first I thought the spaghetti was a bit salty and al dente, but since it also had had huge lumps of crabmeat, the flavour evened out and the chewy pasta worked well. I had two glasses of the Skouras Moschofilero from Greece which paired very well. Desert was stellar, the banana cake is a floor show as it is served, the warm dupont donuts were also very good. I will be back.

Yelp
1906 is a really fine restaurant on the grounds of Longwood Gardens. Excellent and innovative food with great service and the beautiful surroundings of one of the most beautiful and elegant botanical gardens in the world! WOW!

Yelp
I rarely post reviews. But 1906 was so good, I have to share. Setting is beautiful and service was gracious and timely but not rushed. And every dish was superb--little gem caesar, corn & crab soup, blue oyster mushroom agnolotti, crab & saffron pasta. Fresh, seasonal, delicious. Finally, presentation was beautiful--agnolotti, pictured, give a sense. Highly recommend

Yelp
Tried the chef's menu with my partner and we absolutely loved it. We are not fine dining people and usually dinners out include massive plates of tacos, so we were a bit skeptical about what to expect in terms of taste and portion sizes. However, we were more than pleasantly surprised. The service was amazing. Everyone was so courteous and accommodating in terms of food restrictions. The view and ambience is beautiful with a grand view of the main fountain garden. We were celebrating a special occasion here and it was a perfect setting. Coming down to the food, we were served a total of five dishes, not including the palate cleanser. We were told Kennett Square is the hub of mushrooms for the entire world, which we had not known previously, despite living in the area for several years so we were excited for the mushroom dishes especially. The dishes included: 1. Caesar salad - this was a typical salad, but the highlight was crispy well-seasoned mushrooms. We could not get enough of those mushrooms! 2. Mushroom bisque - a creamy earthy mushroomy soup, again with crispy mushrooms. Very flavorful and will definitely get it again. 2.5. Cucumber sorbet(?) (Palate cleanser) - while this did not count as one of the five dishes, it was very cute and refreshing. 3. Ocean Trout - this was one of our favorite dishes. The trout was very well cooked with crispy skin and sat in a creamy flavorful potato gravy. We thoroughly enjoyed this and scarfed it down in minutes. 4. For this course, I received crispy tofu and my partner received the lamb due to our differing food restrictions. Crispy Tofu - this was also very tasty, exemplify a fine dining Thai dish. The plating was exquisite and the curry was the highlight. Lamb - my partner enjoyed this and it was also plated beautifully. 5. Caramelia - was quite far the cutest dessert I've ever had. Molded into a perfect mushroom, reminiscent of toad from Mariokart. We almost felt guilty eating it, but we were so glad we did. It was so good, and we will definitely be back for more. Overall, this was a wonderful fine dining experience, even for those who are not well experienced in such settings like us. We will definitely be back to explore the gardens further and to dine at 1906 again.

Yelp
We had an excellent meal. We do not dine in restaurants often. Between crowded atmosphere and rumors of poor service across the hospitality industry post pandemic we just don't. I am so glad we did this time. We were there on a very rainy weeknight and the restaurant was half full at best which is how we like it. This is an upper scale place. We normally opt for the cafeteria which is consistently good or the beer garden which we have had mixed experiences with. First atmosphere. The inside has a nice updated look. We actually were outside on the terrace in a heated tent. Lots of fairy lights and Christmas trees for the season. Even on this cold, rainy night we were very comfortable. All the tables had fresh flower arrangements, which were beautiful but I would expect nothing less from a public garden. This is the type of place where you have multiple servers and they were all very attentive and worked together well. Water was refilled, plates were taken, new silverware placed all quickly and without prompting. Now the most important part the food. Complimentary brioche bread was served in mini flower pots - so cute. I ordered the mushroom soup as I have had it many times before and it is excellent. One of my favorites. Delicious as always. We ordered truffle gnocchi, salmon, and the pork chop. All was served hot and fresh with beautiful presentation. We all loved our food. Then we saved room for dessert. Desserts were between $12-15 if memory serves, and I was expecting a very small portion but excellent presentation as is typical in higher end restaurants. Imagine my surprise when a very large tiramisu was served in the form of a log with a gnome. (I love gnomes.) Fresh flowers added a lovely touch. My daughter got the flower pot. Everything you see is edible including the pot. My husband ordered the cheesecake. It was all delicious. Amazing experience. 10/10. Highly recommend

Yelp
My husband and I had a wonderful experience at 1906 this evening at Longwood Gardens. Tara greeted us with a smile and a lovely attitude happy to be serving us. She truly made our experience. I had asked for a mocktail which was not listed on the menu, Tara suggested something that I absolutely loved; I believe it was a citrus caffeine free tea mocktail with lime. We ordered the brioche to start, the taste of the brioche with the butter with honey was delicious- seeds on the brioche from the gardens itself and homemade butter...YUM. For a main entree we ordered the Dayboat Scallops and Spaghetti Alla Chitarra with a side of the Grilled Brocollini; it was all phenomenal. We also enjoyed the Caramelia for dessert, which was presented looking like an adorable mushroom! The dining room was enormous, smelling of flowers all around. If you have ANY specifications due to seating, your diet preferences definitely put that in your reservations and definitely do not show up expecting a walk in- without a reservation expect a least an hour wait (we had reservations weeks in advanced and were glad we did as we were seated immediately). We were treated amazing by all the staff and I cannot say enough how much we enjoyed our first experience at this fine dining restaurant. We will absolutely be back for more special dinners. Thank you to Tara and all that catered to us this evening!

Yelp
What an experience! I went with my Mom on a Tuesday for lunch after a snow storm. The view from our table was towards the fountain and tower. The staff is very helpful, greeted us at the door and did the coat check. Our seat included a wonderful view and they allowed us to move over a few tables to avoid the sun shining in our eyes. I loved the beef carpaccio with its salty like mayo sauce, crispy crackers and egg. There were some greens in the middle too with the same sauce which was delicious all together. The meat was thinly sliced with melted in your mouth flavors. They were out of gnocchi so I got the fusilli with pancetta, brown butter and winter squash. I also really enjoyed the pasta and the sauce was sweet and the flavors complimented each other. My Mom got the bisque from the mushroom section of the menu but she said she preferred the mushroom soup in the main dining area better. It was very earthy. The scallops were cooked perfectly with a light flavor. It came with three, some broccoli and cauliflower and greens. The mashed potatoes were buttery and standard. The cabbage (Caramelized Savoy) had a vinegar like taste which is described as crispy cabbage with keepwell soy. I enjoyed both sides but ended up having some to take home as we were getting full from the other dishes. We got the Caramelia desert which was shaped like a mushroom! It was filled with chocolate mouse, white chocolate outside, espresso caramel that drizzled out when you cut it open. All of the things on the plate were edible including the soil and rocks which are chocolate candies and cocoa soil. The dishes were very creative and artistic. I want to come back and try out more delicious food! Our waiter was very friendly and knew the menu well. He helped us pick items and described ingredients and presentation. They have a cheese board option and drink menu also. The music was calming and not too loud. The bathrooms are single stall with orchids inside. I will be back again.

Yelp
Fabulous! Four of us had a wonderful dinner and experience! The setting at the conservatory and the decor/ambiance of the restaurant are unmatched. We arrived a bit early to have a drink at the bar and our cocktails were great: Negronis, a Frosted Violet, and Cosmo. Then seated at our table (with comfy chairs) we had a lovely view of the fountain lights - perfect on a cold, dark winter night. The decor is modern but very warm with a lot of wood and greenery (all from Longwood), perfect lighting, and acoustics. Though the restaurant was busy, we could hear ourselves talk due to the special acoustic ceiling. Service was on point: energetic and very friendly. We asked lots of questions about the restaurant, and staff were happy to engage. We were most impressed with the food: choices, presentation, and flavor. Everything from brioche, flatbread, mushroom Wellington, fish, pastas, to desserts was delicious and did not disappoint. We all agreed the experience reminded us of a "Michelin" spot without the pretense. Overall, a great night out; we all look forward to returning.

Yelp
This is just for the BAR! Stopped by after a sub-par Xmas light evening at Longwood, the bar was the highlight and only redemption of the evening. Ambiance: Open, modern, comfortable, crisp - very nice! Seating: Sat at the bar, but there is a dining room if you have reservations. Service: Bartender and head mixologist were awesome - friendly, helpful, made the evening. A+ Crowd: Older Drinks: Excellent cocktails! We like our mixed drinks and these custom creations hit the mark! A+ Food: Food is good, no complaints. Restrooms: Unisex, clean, very nice. Parking: Huge parking lot. Value: Little too expensive for what it is. Experience: Had a great time at the bar, loved the atmosphere and the bartenders; it was not cheap. After the disappointing Xmas lights this year (seems like it is less and less each year) the bar saved the evening. Give the bartenders and the head bartender/mixologist (British guy) a raise - professionals all the way.

Yelp
I had been to the old dining room and I remember liking it a lot. This new experience needs a lot of work. We were seated 15 minutes after our reservation time despite being 10 minutes early. Not a huge deal but the host said that we would be offered a drink which we were not. We sat down and eventually ordered a drink. For a 7:00 reservation our first drink arrived at 7:50. Our appetizer at 8:00. Not great. For appetizers we had the little gem salad. A few leaves of lettuce were dressed well. Then big chunks of lettuce core with no dressing. Overall not good. The beef carpaccio was tasty but pretty rich with a lot of sauce. The scallops were a little bland. We ordered a second drink. Mine arrived but my wife's never did. For entrees we had the crab pasta which was very bland and the mushroom Wellington which was just ok. After our dinner plates were cleared the waitress came over to pour my wife's wine. Since she wanted it with the meal we turned it down. Because the tables are on top of each other we heard the same conversation on our left and right. Three tables, all members of Longwood, zero intentions of coming back. Seems like this was a waste of $90 million dollars.

Yelp
This was the ultimate date night! Yes, like others said, the service is slow-- WE LOVED THAT!! If you are in good company, you are in no rush! I loved that we weren't rushed and could enjoy our time. The food was incredible! The spaghetti with crab was something I will dream about for a long time. And the best part was sitting at the window and seeing the fountains and lights outside. We also enjoyed getting to go for a walk around Longwood after dinner. My only negative is that when I went to make another reservation for dinner again. There are no dinner times for the foreseeable future because the gardens close at 5pm now. I hope that changes!!

Yelp
This was a special place. The staff was attentive, the menu was varied and sophisticated, and the wine list was very extensive. Everything was delicious. Our party had the duck, risotto, fusilli with pancetta, pomme frites and grilled savoy cabbage. Amazing!

Yelp
We have been fans of the original 1906 Restaurant for years. We were about to be seated in a lot of direct sun. I asked to be seated at another table in an almost empty dining room for lunch. Seeemed to be a big deal, but we were moved. Our server was very pleasant and professional. We all shared a delicious seeded brioche with fancy butter. The mushroom bisque was yummy. I had the French Omelet. Totally awesome! Perfect eggs, filled to the brim with sweet lobster. Unfortunately, my "scallop aficionado" wife found the scallops to have a strong fishy odor. Since one of our companions was enjoying her scallops, my wife said nothing.

Yelp
Now in a new location, under the Conservatory and facing toward the fountains. It's a beautiful space with a garden theme that really works. The food is excellent. We were there for lunch and had the Oyster and Chicken Salad plate along with the Spaghetti Alla Chitarra (Maryland crab, saffron, herbs, pasta). Both were delicious as was the Caramelia dessert, which consisted of chocolate mousse with some very interesting flavors added (see photos). Service was very good as you'd expect in a restaurant of this caliber. On the downside - no more flower pot bread! And the prices ... well, you don't dine here that often! Adding two ice teas to the above our bill with tip was over $100 for lunch.

Yelp
Just call me not impressed. This has been my favorite restaurant for years! The food was always perfect as was the service and cocktails. This was our first experience at the new 1906. We had 6:45 reservations and had to wait until 7:15 to get our table. Then it took the server almost 15 minutes to bring us a menu. Our server turned out to be great! The cocktails are still amazing. But the menu leaves less than a great impression. They feature a whole chicken for $75 and a ribeye for $90. The menu offers many meatless options which are each around $30. Our food was just soso - certainly not what I'm accustomed to at 1906. The new space is stunning, but it's not so stunning as to over shadow a soso menu and average food.
