The restaurant is located in a plaza with plenty of parking. The interior is visually appealing and the menu is extensive. The staff is very helpful explaining the different menu items to us. Ordered the Cut Mirchi appetizer which came with a nice batter and dipping sauce with slight heat. The dosa was huge and came with a variety of sauces. It was cooked with a nice crisp and my favorite sauces were the darker ones. The Chicken Sambar Rice is really good, it is pretty spicy. I loved the flavor but couldn’t eat too much of it due to my spice tolerance. I would come back to try other dishes.

Very mixed food experience on Saturday dinne. Mysore Masala Dosa was absolutely wonderful, one of the best out of thousands I had around the World, including in India: large, beautiful, fresh, crispy and very yummy! At the same time eggplant and okra curry dishes were mediocre at best with inedible okra woody buts in it. And finally the $7 chai was a complete disaster: tasteless, spiceless muddy luke warm (re-heated) 6 Oz in the small carton cup! That completely spoiled the experience which started so great with the fenomenal dosa!

The food here is amazing a must visit restaurant 😊. And options in the menu are really vast. I was confused for a while what should I get 😄. We tried the 70mm paper masala dosa, rava dosa and MLA pesarattu, all were crispy and so good in taste. 100/100. Staff is friendly and place is very clean. 5 stars for over all service and food is really amazing.

Google
Good food, amazing lassi and good atmosphere. We were surprised to see so many people on a weekday for lunch, clearly it seems to be a favorite for many people! We really wanted to visit on a weekend after hearing that there’s live music however a different errand brought us here for lunch and we were satisfied. We got the gobi Manchurian for starters - nice crunchy and well coated. Quantity was also decent for two people. For mains we had panner butter masala- gravy was good, not very spicy. Chilly cheese naan and malabar roti- cheese naan was delicious and quite big but a bit spicy because of the green chillies inside. Malabar roti was soft and good. Both roti’s along with rice of curry was more than enough to fill us fully. Lastly we had the mango lassi which was literally aamraas in a glass! It was creamy thick and sweet, so delicious but very filling! We realised two was too much to finish! However it was too good to not finish.

Google
“1947”, one of The Best spot for people who wants to try Indian food. Pleasant environment, with live music. I totally recommend them, yummy food!

Google
We've been coming to this Indian restaurant for years, and it continues to be one of our absolute favorites. The food is consistently delicious, and the service is always top-notch. There are a few dishes we've loved from the start—and no matter how many times we order them, we never get bored. Special thanks to the staff for always making us feel welcome, especially Gauresh, who is exceptionally courteous and warm every time we visit. It’s the kind of place that keeps you coming back—not just for the food, but for the people too. Highly recommended!

Was just in here tonight and I’m at a loss for words. After waiting for the server to take our order for about 15 minutes, we placed our order for apps, food, and drinks. After waiting patiently for about 25 minutes, our server who took our order came to our table and asked us if we had ordered yet! We said we did, with you! Then another man came by and said he would check on our order. After they realized they threw our order slip out, he came back and asked us to repeat our order! We have a 2 year old and she has a bedtime. The man apologized and said the waitress was new, but I’m more concerned that we told her a whole order and she didn’t even remember taking it! the restaurant was ~40% full, not super busy, and we saw the staff standing around a lot so I can only assume that we were the only group that had this issue. We had to leave at this point, since we already wasted nearly 40 minutes to get served tap water. Maybe the food is good, who knows. But this was a horrible experience after a long day.

Best dinner experience with beautiful ambience, tastes so good and authentic Indian food, my best suggestion must try biryani and I loved Bollywood live music

Yelp
This is still a great option for Indian food in this neck of the woods. The one star off is because it is relatively expensive and there are a few other places deeper in the suburbs that are more flavorful and affordable. Our go to favorites over the years is the 1947 combo which has 2 idlies and 1 vada. The idlies are always soft and fluffy while the vada is crispy and hot. The masala Dosa is tasty and filling. Order all of this accompanied by the chicken lollipop which has a mouth watering sauce (I will be honest, it is not authentic at least the version you get in Mumbai but delicious nevertheless) and can be spiccccy. Service is usually quick and attentive. Ambiance can be a hit or a miss - there are some evenings where they have live music and it can be very loud to the point of being unbearable. Large lot out front for parking and an Indian grocery store in the same strip mall.

Yelp
The Chicken Tkka Marsala had a delicious sauce with just enough of a bite, but the chicken was very dry and over cooked. The Mango Lassi was great. The chicken fried rice had a bit more bite than I had hoped for, but was really good. Next time may need to ask for.less spice. While I did a take out order, I did take in the decor. I really liked the way the restaurant was outfitted and from.what I saw it looked like a great use of their space. The reason for the lower score was the interaction when I picked up my order. No hello, how can I help you, not even a thank you. It wasn't like the place was busy. Having been to India, Singapore and other parts of SE Asia I understand that I may not get the warm and fuzzies, but I had at least thought I would get a THANK YOU. I hope the staff reads this and takes this constructive critique to heart.

Yelp
Food was good. Samosas were good. Had some spice. Lamb vindaloo was not bad. Lamb was a little dry.

Yelp
Went here was lunch on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. No reservations and we were seated promptly. We ordered cut mirchi and chili paneer for appetizers and the cut mirchi was divine. The presentation was very appealing and appetizing. Chilli paneer lacked a lot of gravy but was good. For our mains we ordered coriander dosa, gonghura chicken, vegetable biryani. Coriander dosa was very well liked, it came with a variety of chutneys . Chicken with rice was mighty delicious. The spice quotient was perfect for me. We also ordered rumali roti which paired well with the chicken. And the biryani was delicious. For dessert, the gajjar halwa was very received and it was great way to wrap the meal. I wish there were some gluten free and dairy free options for dessert. Those are always hard to find on the menu.

Yelp
Obsessed with the dosas! I've never had one before, but it was so crispy and yummy. Their lentil soup has soooo much flavor. Will totally be back here. My only thing is that things were spicy and they don't warn you on the menu- so if you don't have a tolerance for heat, be careful here.
google avatar

Yelp
In a sleepy, unassuming strip mall, there's a delicious, crispy ginormous Paper Masala dosas! The dosas were 3 feet long and the idly was fluffy and the size of my palm! The Masala was on point and not too spicy, just wish there was more of it! The peanut sauce had a nice spicy kick and paired well with the dosa. The Biryani (lamb, chicken, and veggie), were quite spicy! My sister rented the private back room for a large party for 50 people with about 8 tables and a bar in the back. The Mango Lassi helped to diluate the spiceness and both the red and white wine were good. There was a band or live singer in the main dining room and the unsurprisingly, the restaurant was packed. Will definitely come back for some Dosa!

Yelp
This place offers an extensive menu with lots of options to try. I was excited to try their chicken paneer. Their majority of their dishes are served with rice, but you have to order the naan separately. The dish was good, but I wish it included more chicken for the price. The staff were friendly and willing to answer any questions that I had about the menu.

Yelp
We arrived at 630 on a Friday - party of 5. Thank goodness we got in early. It was mobbed by 8 when we left and it was hard to get our bill. The food was delicious. I got a spring dosa which was the lentil crepe with vegetables and cheese inside. I expected paneer but it looked like shredded orange cheddar. The samosas were great. Note they only have vegetarian samosas. My husband got shrimp biryani and it took the longest to arrive. It's plentiful and very spicy. Unfortunately it was also very salty. Others with us were very happy with their orders.

Yelp
We picked out 1947 Norwood for a date night and were not disappointed. Huge menu with large gluten free and vegan selections. Everything is super flavorful and fresh. Portions are big and filling. The only downside was that we kind of got lost in the shuffle when all the DoorDash/pickup orders came in and had to flag down a server a few times for water refills and napkins.

Yelp
About 10 weeks ago, I did an online order on UberEats and when I saw within 2 minutes that the promo code was not honored by the restaurant, I called to have the issue fixed or order cancelled. Not only did the man on the phone, say they will not honor the code, but they charged me though they honestly could not have started prepping my order already. I happened to be in the Norwood area today so I went to speak to the manager and Mr. Ayub (not sure if he is the manager but said he is) said the restaurant was in the right to charge me without me getting any food delivery eventhough I called within minutes BECAUSE they do NOT honor any promo codes. They claim they are the third party and do not have to honor the promo codes. BEWARE!! In my 30 years of customer service experience, there has been a rare number of occassions where I have been treated rudely twice by the same store. Usually, the management would be intelligent enough to offer me a gift card or free items from their menu as compensation for the items that I ended up paying for and never received. Order at your own risk!!

Yelp
this is my second time to 1947 norwood and the visits were about a year apart and still so amazing south indian food!!! get the table long dosa. can i just say what a lovely concept for sharing dosa together (or eating one along couch cough) and not charging $50 for no good reason. they basically just make it wider and thinner. it's such an art. we got the mutton appetizer and chili chicken to eat with it. my friend ordered the szechwan noodles to go and said she loved it. and to top off our long drive from rhode island to mass for dosas, we also got the nutella dosa at the end for dessert. it's on the kids menu but they let us get it for a sweet treat hehe. such homey cozy vibes and staff. you could dress up to come for dinner all fancy or casual lunch, they did a wonderful job with the decor that way.

Yelp
Great food and vibes, 1947 Norwood offers a very extensive menu for all. LOCATION: Plenty of parking and space to accommodate large groups! The deco inside was very nice as well. FOOD: We ordered the mango lassi which was decent but not the best we had. My partner ordered the Lamb Chettinadu and liked it! I ordered the Mysore Masala Dosa and absolutely loved it - it had so much flavor and the crepe was perfect. We also ordered the Babai Idly and popcorn chicken to share. The babai idly was wonderful but popcorn chicken can be skipped. SERVICE: Staff was nice but helpful when we had questions!
google avatar

Jen H.

Yelp
A little hidden gem right off route 1 with an extensive menu and welcoming staff. There are plenty of tables inside, but it looks like they do a robust to go business as well. Portions are generous and the flavor in every sauce, meat and dish were delicious! Plus, we had plenty of leftover to take home for a second meal. My only call out is that the water cups are fairly small and you have to ask for refills a few times (especially if you order something spicier like the vindaloo)
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
Great indian food and the best in the Medfield/Walpole/Sharon region! Me and my family have been searching for a great indian place in the Medfield surroundings for a while and 1947 got the trophy! It has a good ambiance (albeit a little noisy), great service and, more important, great food. The menu is extensive, with plenty of vegetarian and gluten free choices, and the seasoning and selection as authentic as it gets. We had the 70 cm dosa , samosas, chicken tikka masala, butter chicken and a paneer dish that was very hot and different from all curries we had before. We'll definitely go back for more.
google avatar

Felicia C.

Yelp
Best Indian Food in the area!!! It's my go to spot and I'm lucky to live in Norwood so it's close.

Charlene L.

Yelp
The menu is very extensive with lots of options. It made me excited about the possibilities of trying new things. Saag Chicken and Chicken Korma were delicious. Those are my go to and you could tell that everything is authentic from the main dishes to the Naan. Definitely will return and look forward to being introduced to dishes that are new to me.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
I ordered 3 entrees and the rice given wasn't even enough for 3 people. Probably one of the worsts Indian food I've had in a long time. Chicken was overcooked. Also, service was horrible. I would never come back again.

Yvette V.

Yelp
Amazing samosas and recommendations for not to spicy food options. The food was with the wait. Will definitely return.
google avatar

Edward M.

Yelp
Very clean and airy. We get goat or lamb vindaloo. So far it's been exceptionally good hope to return for other interesting items. Very good spice mixture. Brought family and they were very impressed.

Lihos S.

Yelp
Have been here about 20 times. Best Indian food in the area. Have never had a bad experience. The food comes out quick and is super fresh. The dosas especially are amazing. The staff is amazingly kind and their live music is great.
google avatar

Dan L.

Yelp
What a lovely place!! Service was very attentive, not too busy, and the food was SO FLAVORFUL!!! Even when ordered spicy, the taste was phenomenal!!! Can't recommend the lamb saag or the popcorn chicken enough!!! Would visit again in a heartbeat!!
google avatar

Sa Ta N.

Yelp
Good food, but the service has really slipped in the last year or so. Everything's very rushed, and food often comes out in the wrong order (entrees before starters, etc.) and the check before you're finished eating. Also, AVOID weekends at all costs because they have the worst singer in the world performing there every time.

Brenda D.

Yelp
Wow the paper dosa!! The entrees were outstanding- we eat a lot of Indian food. This is some of the best I've ever had. Definitely try

Mena M.

Yelp
Absolutely phenomenal. Food is always great. Service is attentive and helpful. Spice is just right (for someone who likes spice). Call ahead to know if there's live music which is always entertaining!

Haley L.

Yelp
I got an assortment of dishes and a 70 mm dosa. It was absolutely wonderful. Good price point and excellent service. This is legit stuff.

Kristine S.

Yelp
Great quality and portion sizes for the price. My favorite Indian option in the area.

Laurie H.

Yelp
We had a few questions about an appetizer, the waitress couldn't understand our question. The pictures on the menu were not pictures of their food,. The vegetable pakora wasn't in balls, as shown. It was almost stringy. The pakora was very good though. We ordered Chicken Tikka Marsala, medium--it was not spicy but was good. We were given water to drink with no ice. When I asked for ice, they didn't have any. They had a DJ setting up (this was 6pm on a Sunday night) and they played Indian music, the DJ sang. We went on a Saturday night last time and they played children's music, very off for a date night out. We were charged a 18% "service fee". No one informed us of this prior to ordering, it was not listed any where. We are a family of five and to suddenly add 18% to our bill and still expect a tip? That was an expense we didn't budget for. We will not be going back because of the fee. You can't charge a free, then ask for a tip on top of that. Sorry--they lost a family as customers.
google avatar

Vinay S.

Yelp
New Indian restaurant in the neighborhood and we went there to try. The mutton roast biryani was really awesome and the big dosa kids ordered, They loved it. Some food might be too spicy for most of the people, so check with the server, the level of spice
google avatar

Anish K.

Yelp
Decently good Indian food! The restaurant seemed to be quite busy for friday night dinner. We had ordered takeout with Kerala Chicken Fry as appetizer and Gongura Chicken Curry as entree. The kerala chicken fry is Chicken marinated with a variety of spices and then deep fried. It tasted good, but was a bit too dry and slightly over fried for my liking. The Gongura chicken curry is Boneless Chicken curry cooked with a paste made of Tangy "Gongura Leaves" and other spices and herbs in South Indian style. The medium spicy curry was good along with rumali roti which seemed to made partially of whole wheat (contrary to the usual), but was a welcome delight since one usually doesn't see rumali roti on the menu. The garlic naan bread was bit of a disappointment though as it was undercooked.

Yelp
Solid 4.5 Rating. Here's my feedback: 1st & foremost I absolutely LOVE Indian food. I've tried some of the best Indian restaurants from SF to Miami To NYC. This place was pretty darn good. Flavor Town!! My biggest gripe with Indian food is it's usually overly spiced without enough flavor. Now this place doesn't ask how you like your spice level you get it how they make and I'm totally ok with that. What got me was even though their food was most definitely spicy it had FLAVOR!! Not a single bland dish. The ambiance is cool. We walked into what felt like an Indian Karaoke lounge with a gentleman at the front getting down on some keys with heavy auto-tune for his vocals. It was very entertaining and brought life to the place. I read other people's reviews talking about how terrible service was and/or the attitude of the servers. Our server was just fine. I don't expect servers to kiss ass. I can appreciate a person just being who they are and delivering food as it's ready. We asked for extra water or anything additional we needed but not once did I feel like the servers were rude or inattentive, just busy! We ordered: Veg. Samosas Veggie Pakoras Shrimp Biryani Chicken Korma Fish chettinadu Childrens chicken (non spicy) Garlic naan Anything we didn't eat that night we took home and ate all of the left overs. Def. My new go to Indian Spot in the greater Boston Area.

Cassandra L.

Yelp
Cousin and I came in for a bite. The food was REALLY good. We ordered garlic chicken- BOMB, samosa were good. My meal was the Telangana curry goat- my new favorite. My cousin had the lamb masala. I forgot to take a picture of my food before I dug in. They give a good portion with enough meat! will return. Service could have been a tad bit more pleasant. But it wasn't bad! Maybe because their website says they close at midnight and we were there till about 10:15. ...... They closed at 10:30pm major discrepancy.

H L.

Yelp
Haven't gone since we saw mice running around earlier this year. Does anyone know if that problem is resolved? It was absolutely gross sitting and eating food while mice were all over. They keep their doors open a lot , so they manage to come in. But since that experience , we haven't been back. Besides that, service was a bit slow then except for 1 of the men who is speedy. Food was usually pretty good. Hope they've taken care of the mice

Yelp
I've been stubbornly going to one Indian restaurant in the South End - Mela. I've tried maybe a couple more but it was always a disappointment so I decided to not venture elsewhere for my quest for Indian cuisine. I came here because we were nearby and my friends really wanted to do Indian so like a good camper, I went. And I am glad I did, I've never had a flakier or buttery-er samosa like this before. Everything was great but I kind of wish the mild dishes could be milder. Other than that, I have no complaints. The atmosphere was chill and service was superb. Treat yourself to this unique experience. Oh they even have a DJ and somebody went up to karaoke. Super fun vibes!

Yelp
First of all let me start with this. Please for the love of god hire server who actually want to do that job. Every single employee looks miserable and you feel like you're a burden on them. What am I paying you for? We ordered pav bhaji and the unhappy server mumbled how they don't have chaat. Ok, so why is it on the menu? Then, the food came out and it was flavorful but way too spicy for majority of people. They don't even ask what spice level you want your food to be. It was recommended to me but I won't be recommending to anyone else.

Sara S.

Yelp
Average overall experience. We ordered appetizers first given the extensive menu, so we could have time to look before we ordered our mains. They don't have a drink menu so we went with the straightforward mango lassi. We got the gongura chicken appetizer which felt either overdone or old. Not as spicy as the server suggested, but totally edible and finished. We ordered a rasam vada, but it didn't come. Only one person was taking orders for a relatively busy evening, so ordering our mains took a while - we had to flag the server to do so. Our rasam vada was forgotten - the server acknowledged this when we followed up. We ordered a Mysore masala dosa with extra potato masala, Bengali fish fry, the lamb chop and the 1947 chicken biryani. Unfortunately the rasam vada we originally ordered and the dosa came out together which was tough for one person to eat - both, at the same time, while still hot - and the dosa was sans the extra potato masala (instead there was extra sambhar). Fortunately, though, both were very tasty! The fish fry and the lamb chop were both good - we would order them again, but perhaps for take out. But then, again, we had to follow up on an item. The biryani never came - and the server said "it wasn't fired" when we asked about it. He asked if we wanted it to go, but at that point, given the second mishap, we decided to give up (was it us?) and head back home to Boston. Happy to take the leftovers home - but just not sure when we'll be back.

Yelp
Came in for a late bite (930) after a show at the Fall Out Shelter. Split the Masala Dosa, Golbi 65 and the Onion Padoka. Flavors and textures exploded from each dish. The spice level left warming sensation across the lips and tongue. The Golbi and Dosa were crispy; with the Golbi bursting with flavor and that sensational spice. Friendly staff and attentive service. Stylish spot as well with large booths and table for groups.

Yelp
Amazing Indian cuisine. Garlic Naan is savory with perfect balance of crisp and chewiness. I must come here for my monthly fix of tikka masala and palak paneer. Mango lassi beverage is perfect complement to my meal- sweet, tangy, custardy with just the right hint of spice. I could drink 3 of these in one sitting! Service is always 5 stars. Staff is always super-friendly and attentive- no hovering or rushing here. Highly recommend this restaurant. The menu is quite extensive and will try other offerings in the future and update my review. I will always remember stuffing my face with my palak paneer with a confused look while processing a music video with Nick Jonas singing in Indian.

Yelp
Yikes, I must have ordered on an off-day!? I ordered butter chicken and Avakai goat curry, and the chef must have dumped an entire jar of salt for both entrees. The goat curry simply tasted like salt, where it was not edible at all. The butter chicken was comparably less salty but still way too salty. Also it has bones? I don't think I have ever ordered butter chicken from a restaurant that has bones. I ended up throwing out the food, because they were simply not edible. What a huge disappointment, because I wanted to try it based on glowing reviews. Based on my own experience, sadly I won't be returning. Hope your experience is better than mine.

Nadege P.

Yelp
Food was good. We only tried it once dining in. It's family style with the seating to be desired. Maybe it was the evening we went, but there were a few rowdy families which made the dining experience so so. The ambiance overall wasn't great as a result. Service was fine.
google avatar

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
This was a terrible takeout experience. Not only did the delivery take too long, once the food arrived it was so spicy that all but one dish was completely inedible. When we called the restaurant to complain, the woman told us it was our own fault for using ordering online. We will never return and will share our experience with others.

Judy G.

Yelp
Did was very good, but the service during the lunch hour left a lot to be desired. It seemed half the people in the restaurant were walking back into the kitchen, but to get service was like pulling teeth
google avatar

Harry K.

Yelp
OMG! Ordered the Tandoori Sampler & Chicken Tikka Marsala and was completely blown away! WOW! Talk about one of the best, mouthwateringly, succulent dish, that truly tests the chef and kitchen, as they have to prepare (and cook) each of the various ingredients! The Chicken Tikka Marsala was cooked to absolute perfection. Check out the photos below! Well done, for knocking these dishes, out of the park!

Lifejourney7000 L.

Yelp
Highly recommended! My family recently celebrated my mom's 80th birthday at 1947 Norwood Indian Restaurant, and we had an exceptional experience! The cuisine was supremely flavorful, the manager (thanks Ayub) and staff were patient and attentive, and the ambiance was relaxed. We enjoyed every aspect of being there and look forward to dining at 1947 Norwood again!

Yelp
Exellent Rava Dosa and Idli along with sambhar and chutneys. The food was made ans served quickly too.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing deep Indian cuisine, have not had any Indian cuisine that expressed such different flavors, sure they have the normals, chicken tikka masala, but it's elevated. Menu is diverse and explorative. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Finally got my biryani fix an hour outside of boston, the South Indian coffee was amazing and the biryani just perfect. I will be returning as often as I can!

Yelp
Really probably 4.5. I'm glad this part of the state is ramping up the competition with good Indian restaurants. I've been here on three different occasions for takeout and we've ordered the 1947 Special Dosa, Andhra Chicken Curry, Gutti Vankay Koora (pureed eggplant), Navratan Korma, and Goan Chicken Curry. I loved the Navratan Korma especially - mixed veggies with cheese, cashews, raisins in a tasty spicy sauce. But I thought all dishes were good, well prepared and better than you would get at the average Indian restaurant. Some were more distinctive than others. The food here has an authentic feel to it. They're not necessarily going to tone down the spiciness just because you're a westerner ordering food. But if you do want the spiciness toned down just tell them. I found the portion size and prices to be good - about what you would pay at an average Indian restaurant, albeit with better food. I didn't find them to be stingy with certain ingredients either.
