The Biggest D.C.-Area Restaurant Openings in June 2025 | Eater DC

"A Cantonese dim sum restaurant offering staples like congee, shrimp dumplings, and turnip cake alongside heartier entrees such as pepper steak and whole roast duck; the green-covered space is themed around the Chinese zodiac and its symbols of luck and money, with the name honoring the year of the water pig." - Emily Venezky

I came to the restaurant with a group of friends, and we were all blown away! It was one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in Arlington! The food was incredible — every dish was full of authentic flavor, beautifully presented, and perfectly cooked. The atmosphere was modern yet cozy, making it a great spot for both group dinners and date nights. Check their bar area definitely, the display, the signature cocktails, definitely a high-end Chinese restaurant. Also the service was as impressive as the food. Their server and the manager were so attentive and friendly — they took time to explain dishes and even recommended a special item that was off-menu. It turned out to be one of the highlights of the night! (that spicy fried fish and spicy boil beef) We ended our meal with their pineapple bun dessert, which was hands down the best I’ve ever had. You can tell how much care and pride goes into everything they serve. Highly recommend this spot to anyone who looking for amazing Cantonese food in Arlington! Can’t wait to come back!

This was my first time visiting this restaurant with my family. The restaurant is very clean, and as soon as we walked in we were warmly and friendly greeted. The food was very delicious and perfect for a family or group dinner. The service was great, although I requested rock sugar and they kept forgetting. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and will definitely recommend this place to my friends and family.

Overall: Tried 1983 for the first time last night and it's actually a decent place for Chinese fine dining in the area. The menu has authentic choices and even tastes authentic. I highly recommend the seafood vermicelli hot pot. It comes out hot and sizzling and tastes great. Atmosphere: very modern, chic and upscale. Great ambiance. Can be nice for a cozy date. Not too loud or crowded when we went (around 8pm on a Monday night). Service: very friendly service from all staff. Most aren't too familiar with English, but there was one young waiter who spoke great English. He was kind and attentive to us during our meal. Everyone else, including the owner, we're super friendly and accommodating as well. The owner offered us free egg tart pastries at the end of our meal and we were so grateful. Food: GREAT food. All the flavors hit. We ordered the spicy dry pepper chicken, choy sum, vermicelli seafood pot, pork belly with crispy skin (appetizer) and the coconut sage with pomelo for dessert. We wanted to order the shrimp siu mai but dim sum wasn't available at that hour. (Hot tip: I highly recommend the siu mai though. I've had it before and the sizes are huge and very good. Full of filling and a piece of real shrimp in every bite.) All the choices we made for our meal were very good. The only slight disappointment was the portions for the pork belly with crispy skin. We ordered it after seeing photos of it on their page and we're disappointed to see them come out half the size as the photos they used to display it. I hope they update it accordingly so it's not misleading. They also offered a prix fixe menu as part of their November special for $48 per person. All parties must order it in order to partake in the special offer. I recommend trying it as they offer some really good options, including the siu mai, seafood vermicelli, and the coconut sago. Definitely worth coming again.

We had a great experience at this Chinese restaurant, enjoying their dim sum selection. The siu mai and har gaw were fresh and flavorful, with delicate wrappers and juicy fillings. The beef chow fun had an excellent wok hei, and the char siu bao was fluffy with a sweet-savory filling. The venue design itself was a bit dated but it was spotless and new. While the servers seemed a bit inexperienced their friendliness and effort made up for it. Overall, a satisfying meal with high-quality food in a clean, stylish setting. We plan to return to try their other non-dim sum dishes.

Google
One of the best Cantonese restaurants in DC! Everything we tried was delicious — from the tender BBQ pork and savory beef ribs to the fresh dim sum and crispy egg tarts. The pineapple buns were warm and buttery, perfectly paired with tea. Portions are generous, and the flavors taste truly authentic, just like what you’d find in Hong Kong. The service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere felt cozy yet vibrant. Highly recommend for anyone craving real Cantonese comfort food in DC!

Google
Had amazing dim sum and other traditional Cantonese dishes here on our visit! We will definitely be back to try more! The ambiance was wonderful, the service was incredible (very attentive and courteous), and most of all the food was top of the line! A great experience all around and well worth the price - everything came out piping hot and the quality of ingredients stands out above other dim sum restaurants in the DC/metro area! A must visit!!

Google
I had an awesome experience dining here. The servers were very kind, attentive, and friendly. What also made the experience great was the amazing variety of delicious food. Some of the items I had included Spicy Dry Pepper Chicken, Stir-Fried Pickled Cabbage with Pork Intestine, Mongolian Beef, Lo Mein noodles with Beef, and House-Made Snowball Mochi. All were served with complimentary hot herbal tea. I certainly recommend dining here if you’re visiting the area as I was.

Google
I recently visited and had an overall great experience! The orange chicken was probably the best I’ve ever had. Our larger group (of 9 people) were sat in a back room. My only critique is that it took us over 2 hours to eat here. A few of the dishes we ordered were never brought out and it took a very long time for the staff to take our order. We were gifted a congee, but they were also out of white rice (which we never got, too). Surely they are still figuring things out as they are very new! I would consider going back and changing my review accordingly. With that aside, the food was incredibly good. We had a great diverse selection and the setting was quite nice. Soon, they will have a full bar, too. My favorites were the orange chicken, the jellyfish, and the Honey BBQ Pork Bun.

Yelp
The restaurant is very clean, modern decor, and the service is friendly as well. The food all seem freshly made, and tasty (good taste, not too oily). We ordered mostly dim sum, they were all very good. Overall, it is a great restaurant to hang out and enjoy Chinese food.

Yelp
1983 Chinese Cuisine, located at Westpost Shopping Center in National Landing, Arlington, VA, offers a variety of authentic Cantonese dishes, including dim sum, dumplings, healthy soups, roasted duck, and BBQ pork. The restaurant features stylish, modern decor with Chinese elements, such as framed paintings and figurines, and the staff were friendly. We visited for a late lunch, and it was still crowded, reflecting its popularity as one of the best Cantonese restaurants in the DC metro area and northern Virginia. We sampled several dishes, and we highly recommend: - Red tea was served in a pot for sharing, and its quality was excellent, helping with digestion. - Shumai, the largest among dim sum in the DMV area, was very tasty. - Rice Noodle Roll with Shrimp was chewier than others and seasoned with vinegary soy sauce rather than sweet soy sauce, which tasted great. - Seafood with Vermicelli Pot was served hot, featuring a mix of seafood, red and green peppers, garlic, cooked in soy sauce with vermicelli. - Salted egg yolk Kabocha squash, deep-fried and garnished with salted egg yolk, offers a subtle salty flavor that enhances the squash's sweetness. - Their version of General Tso's Chicken is sweeter than usual but still savory and flavorful. - Crispy Pork Intestine was unique and crispy, though its strong pork flavor might not appeal to everyone. It was very oily but tasted better with dipping sauce.

Yelp
4 stars: No complaints, will come again. I score high considering many people automatically dismiss even 3.5's. We had dim sum lunch, the food was pretty good and would come again especially considering the location. It's not my first choice but you pay for convenience and there were no grievances. For DMV level standards it's fine. Location is a huge factor considering the usual 40 minutes drive to Rockville & one hour to return on weekends from Arlington. The price is definitely higher but the food also felt more "premium". You don't feel like you're just paying higher to pay for their rent; in contrast to the other dim sum restaurants in Tysons / Barracks Row / Woodley Park. Service was nice but understaffed even on Saturday noon. Everyone was multitasking, the host station was empty and took a while to meet incoming customers.

Yelp
Came with a party of 5 on a Sunday and was seated right away. The dim sum wasn't really that great in Cantonese standards so I suspect it is the northern provinces. For example, southern har gao (shrimp dumpling) have much thinner, see-through wrap. But it tasted ok for the most part. They also serve black tea - pu'er if you like a hot steaming cup of tea. The atmosphere is pleasant and modern and service for the most part is westernized and great for a nice group lunch or dinner.

Yelp
You don't see many Chinese restaurants that looks this modern and trendy. The decor is really nice and the food taste very authentic and not americanized. Our experience would have been better if there were more servers as service was slow. Fortunately, the food made up for it. Definitely worth coming again to experience other dishes as well as dim sum which is not served at dinner time.

Yelp
Came back to try a few more mains and great overall! -eggplant in casserole: must get if you like eggplant, tender, hot and delicious -egg yolk squash: lightly battered squash that's fried. Very light and flavorful, perfect pairing to some saltier dishes -meat patty: classic Chinese dish, flavorful and salty -crispy Jumbo shrimp: well seasoned stir fry, can taste the wok hei Still have to try their dim sum menu but dinner is a hit!

Yelp
Such a cute spot if you're into sharing Chinese food! We came on a Sunday afternoon for a late lunch with the expectation of "shitty Chinese" comfort food. Little did we know they serve much more than just orange chicken, so we decided to branch out and try a few different dishes. We were seated right away and given water, and soon our waitress brought over hot black tea and a Diet Coke (alcohol license still in the works). I was craving meat and vegetables, so we ordered the poached crab meat, scallop, shrimp, and crispy rice in lobster sauce. For greens, the waitress recommended the stir-fried choy sum. Not my favorite since it's a bit bitter, but I appreciated the balance. The soup itself could've had more meat, but the crispy rice was a fun surprise--plus it made great leftovers once we added more protein at home. For dessert, I couldn't resist ordering the durian swans purely for aesthetics. Durian can be funky, but these were really good: distinct flavor without the rancid edge. I'd happily grab them to go next time and pair with a coffee. Overall, the food was better than expected, and I'll definitely be back to try more dishes!

Yelp
First, it's beautiful. They did a great job decorating and transforming this location to something that feels authentically Chinese while still modern. Love the decor! Second service is absolutely amazing ! They do a good job at checking in on you and helping you with decisions! Unfortunately, the legal license will be granted sometime at the end of August 25, so we came a little too early to try drinks. But the bar looks beautiful. Food was good but I prefer saucier options especially when it comes to meat / seafood. May need to return to try other options. The fried rice was good so was the seafood with vermicelli pot.

Yelp
Very delicious Chinese food. Service is a little slow, but I would return given the food is so good. Beef chow fun: 10/10. Had the char wok flavor, tender meat, perfectly salted, was a hit. Steamed fish: 10/10. Tender, fresh, just the right amount of ginger and scallions Beef filet with black pepper: 9/10. Perfectly tender, has a nice char. Sweet and sour pork on ice: 9/10. Good flavor, very crispy. Restaurant has a banquet as well. Plenty of space and nice decor. It recently had its grand opening - I hope it stays open and I also hope their service can improve a bit as well.

Yelp
We went for dinner on a weeknight. Thr space is beautiful and the service was very attentive and friendly. The menu is original without being so atypical that you don't recognize anything. Prices were fair for the area. We ordered the egg Yolk prawn appetizer and the dim sum appetizer. My husband ordered a dry pepper chicken fish and I ordered the egg entree. The waitress explained to me that the egg entree is their take on an egg foo young. Pro tip- when the menu here says something is spicy believe them. Luckily my husband likes spicy food because his chicken wasn't kidding around. Everything was good. My eggs were like egg foo young but not. Whereas egg foo young is more of a dense pancake or frittata these were crepey and light. They add their own sweet and sour sauce that has orange juice in it and you can tell it is house made and not some viscous gloop from a can. It is very tangy so make sure you want that before you order. The dim sum appetizer was the stand out, which makes sense since dim sum is their specialty (we are excited to try the full dim sum menu on a weekend). The appetizer came with 4 different steamed dumplings: shrimp, beef, scallops and veggie. All were excellent. The prawn appetizer was my least favorite. While it was still good - the shrimp were cooked perfectly - the egg Yolk sauce on it was almost a little sweet or custardy and the tarot slices it came on were nice but it tasted like 3 different elements rather than one cohesive dish. I feel like there are other things on the menu that would be more compelling. We also tried some deserts - all very nice and house made, but not the main event. My husband really enjoyed the way his tea was served - a personal heater and pot with a delicate little cup to sip from. All in all, would recommend. Apparently we went during their soft opening phase so they are still working out the menu based on feedback. I think that's right. Much of this was already excellent and if they keep tweaking I think this place will be really superb. It is very clear a lot of pride was taken into designing the restaurant and crafting a thoughtful menu. Again, looking forward to coming back for the full dim sum experience.

Yelp
On the way from DSW we decided to grab a bite to eat. My sister, my children, and I decided to go to 1983 Chinese Cuisine. I had saw a flyer in the DSW elevator. The inside was beautiful! It was nice, clean, and the lighting was amazing. This was a soft opening and we went on a Saturday. Our waitress offered us the lunch special menu and we noticed it said mon-fri. I confirmed with her that this was still acceptable being it was Saturday. After placing our orders she came back and informed us that it was in fact only on weekdays. We told her that was fine and wanted a min to go over the actual menu. She continued to come over to the table and seemed a bit annoyed that we hadn't yet decided what we wanted. She seemed agitated but not unpleasant. That's the only thing I did not like about the experience. The food was decent. What we had: For appetizer we had Garlic Chicken Wings: Rating 5/5: These were really good I had the Crispy Jumbo Shrimp w/ Fried Garlic: rating 5/5- This had great flavor and a bit of a kick Both my children had Orange Chicken: Rating 4/5 - I tasted it and it's not my thing (I also don't like oranges). My son loved it and my daughter did not. She likes oranges but didn't like that it had a SUPER orangey taste. My sister ordered from the Dim Sum menu: Steamed Beef Tripe with Ginger and Green Onion: Rating 4/5- she said it was good but would not order it again (I didn't try this. I didn't like how it looked) Steamed Spare Ribs with Gold and Silver Garlic: Rating 4/5- she said it was flavorful but do not prefer her ribs steamed. She would also not order this again ( I didn't try this either) Shrimp Siu Mai: Rating 5/5- she said this was absolutely delicious and would order it again!

Yelp
I cannot overstate enough how much I enjoyed my visit to this restaurant. It's relatively new, but it's such a cute addition to the neighborhood. Additionally, the interior is absolutely gorgeous. You can tell that the owner of this restaurant took a lot of pride in the interior decor. You are surrounded by so many Jade and Gold hues and accents from wall to wall. Additionally, inside, you will find gorgeous and comfortable dining areas, some of which can be sectioned off for private groups and parties. There are also tables with Lazy Susan/rotating centers. Now for the food: Honestly, some of the best Chinese food I have had in this region. I love the fact that the menu offers such a wide variety of dishes from fried rice and orange chicken, two really good dim sum that is made fresh right there. No, really, They have a chef preparing dim sum right there and you can watch as he does so. Fried rice: really good. Needed a little bit of soy sauce, but ultimately some of the best I have had and well cooked. Spring rolls: absolutely bomb. Full of big pieces of shrimp, cooked perfection, and delicious overall for such a simple treat. Dim sum: I ordered three different types, which included a shrimp, a veggie, and a pork and shrimp. They were all very good. Extremely fresh, and extremely filling. Orange chicken: definitely no way you can compare this to panda express. Crispy and perfect amount of sauce so that it didn't get soggy. Flavor wise, it definitely is more on the orange side. There isn't too much of a kick, but it has good flavor overall. Pastries: durian swan was very good if you liked Durian fruit. I do not, but it was still pretty good. The egg tart was really good. I really enjoyed this. I do not recall what the third muffin like pastry was, but it was definitely my favorite. Service: the service was great. The staff did a great job at anticipating our needs. Without us requesting anything, we received to go boxes and bags, and then you offered to pack our items up for us as we watched the dim sum creation. I would absolutely come back here. In fact, I look forward to coming back here soon. The dim sum here is some of the best I've had in years since leaving Southern California.

Yelp
We had a great experience here overall! I've been eyeing this spot to open for a while now, so I was excited to try. The first impression is definitely that this is Canto-approved! So many family and friend groups when we came. I loved the decor and furniture--it's like just upscale enough that you feel like there was some deliberate procurement but casual enough to stop by after walking around the mall. The service was definitely spotty but I think they're just getting their footing. We got a spread of pretty good food, but the beef chow mein was honestly so good I'd come back for that alone. Other highlights were the sago and the sizzling chicken. I'm really happy with this addition to the neighborhood but I'll definitely come back in a bit after they've settled in.

Yelp
The food was great (pineapple bun, chongqing spicy chicken and eggplant w minced pork in a claypot). The service was wonderful, both the server and manager/owner were very personable and friendly. The ambiance was very elegant and comfortable, I def wanna go back! Thanks very much for a wonderful first experience! 下次见!

Yelp
Heard about this new spot just around my neighborhood and have to give it a try. 1983 Chinese Cuisine Restaurant, located in Arlington very close to Pentagon mall, very upscale, clean, bright restaurant offering transitional Cantonese food. There is street parking nearby or paid garage. Interior is beautiful, clearly aiming for high end dining experiences. The restaurant still in soft opening stage, so the bar area isn't ready yet, and some shelves still empty. We went on a Sunday afternoon without reservation and was told would 15-30 mins waiting even though some tables are available, likely due to limited staff, we were seated in 20 mins, our waiter is friendly. Dim Sum: Siu Mai (Pork and Shrimp): taste pretty legit, similar to home taste. Chicken feet in Abalone Sauce: love the texture, tender and soft, but I couldn't taste the abalone sauce, still, the sauce itself is very flavorful. Beancurd Roll: Kinda my only disappointment here, lack of seasoning and bit bland overall. Pineapple Bun with Molten Egg Custard: Amazing, absolute highlight, beautiful top, and lave-like custard filling coming out, my hand was messy but worth it. Will come back for this. Main Dishes: Signature Roast Duck: One of their recommended dishes, duck was okay, not bad, but not very outstanding, The skin could be more crispy and duck could be less fat under skin. The plum sauce servicing the ducks is a plus, excellent with the duck. I guess it is hard to find a truly exception Cantonese roast duck here in US because to restriction on the roasting methods and differences in duck breeds. Crispy Jumbo Shrimp with Fried Garlic: Love this dish, very crispy texture the friend garlic is amazing added a ton of flavor. Overall, food is pretty solid, and original, pricing are on the higher end, and portions are quite small. Will come back another time to try more dishes.

Yelp
We visited for dinner on Aug 6, before the grand opening, with my parents after their flight into DCA. The restaurant was quiet, and the bar wasn't stocked yet, so I had tea (served nicely in a glass pot, charged per cup). We ordered two dim sum platters, braised pork belly with taro, braised pork knuckle, and shrimp fried rice. While that would usually be enough for four at a Cantonese spot, we left a bit hungry and underwhelmed. Service was very polite, though we were oddly distracted by staff assembling & diassembling a large table nearby during most of our meal. Also, parking in the lot behind the restaurant isn't free and there was no validation. Hope to return post-opening and update with a better experience.

Yelp
We came here to try ahead of their soft opening (dinner time), they weren't serving dim sum at the time, which is what I really wanted. The service was good overall but a little slow. When we got there there were only a couple tables, but by the time we left it most of the tables were occupied. The interior is modern and clean. We ordered several dishes beef chow fun, pan fried dumplings, sweet and sour pork on ice, and honey glazed char siu (bbq pork). Each of the items were good. The char siu was good, it had the honey sweetness and the bbq (Chinese style) that I wanted. I enjoyed the beef chow fun, the noodles weren't too oily and they were good texture. The sweet and sour pork took us by surprise, since it was truly unique. It was literally served on ice with the sweetness from the pineapple and strawberries. The ice was interesting because the pork came out warm in the inside and cold on the outside. It was still crunchy from the fry and not drowning in sauce. The dumplings were standard. The prices overall were kinda high for the dishes. We also got snow ball mochi. They had soft, chewy mochi on the outside. They also gave us some coconut dessert which was pretty tasty, reminded us of a coconut panna cotta.

Yelp
A NEW bombshell has entered the villa and its serving up Chinese classic dishes in one of the most elegant and sleek aesthetics in pentagon row! I mean, seriously the restaurant is GORGEOUS and staff are friendly and kind. Now, lets talk about food. Hot and spicy boiled Sichuan fish, roasted duck, dim sum ('til 4pm), fried rice, Mongolian beef....etc so many great menu items to choose from and I can't wait until they get their ABC license so I can enjoy it all again with a nice cocktail or glass of wine. -SpicyAivy

Yelp
Went on a Saturday earlier side of lunch at around 11:15. The restaurant was fairly empty and got seated rightaway. The restaurant started filling up around 12 noon. This is where Bonefish used to be at Pentagon City. They renovated the interior to be upscale Chinese which I like. It's a good place to have larger family gatherings. It's hard to find authentic Cantonese food in NOVA so we wanted to try this place. I would say everything tasted good and reasonably priced (portions not big but again they are paired with reasonable price so to me it's acceptable). Lots of servers around so service is more attentive than your typical Chinese restaurant. Every dish I tried I would get again. The sweet and sour pork was a surprise because when I saw the ice and all that strawberry I was not sure what to expect. But the pork itself was cooked to perfection. Definitely give this place a try. I'm hoping it'll have better business than Bonefish did! Parking lot nearby is paid but very cheap. $1 for 2 hrs.

Yelp
Had a wonderful first experience at our new neighborhood restaurant. The decor is lovely, the acoustics are excellent - even crowded you can have a conversation without having to raise your voice. Service was spot on - friendly, efficient, but not too cloying either. The food - ah the reason we eat out -right? Absolutely delicious. The pan fried dumplings were perfect - stuffed to the gills, flavorful; Beef Chow Fun was full of flavor and the noodles were cooked perfectly, as was the beef; Crispy fried Squid was a highlight - not at all greasy, crisp and plenty of squid (it wasn't all breading as can often be the case elsewhere). We will be back and often.....Welcome to the Neighborhood!

Yelp
Surprisingly decent dim sum in the Pentagon City area. My expectations were low, because the only other Chinese restaurant that I know of in this area is Yunnan by Potomac, and that place is bad. We ordered the lamb chop (monthly special), shrimp shumai, rice noodle roll with beef, and beef short rib with black pepper sauce. The lamb chop was expensive at $38 - nearly $10 per chop. It tasted decent, but nothing to write home about. The dim sum options on the other hand were pretty solid. The rice noodle roll with beef was a large portion and packed with meat inside. It comes with soy sauce, but you can ask for chili oil or vinegar on the side to really jazz it up. The beef short rib was made with like a Korean galbi style cut of meat, and it was very flavorful and savory. The shumai was just normal shumai, but the pieces were pretty fat (large) If I were to come back, I think I would stick with the dim sum options and just load up on dim sum. The food took a little while to come out, because I think it's cooked to order. The service was hit or miss - the waitress didn't really seem to know the menu very well and had to go back to ask the kitchen for details. However, the other wait staff were prompt with water refills and taking away dirty/empty plates All in all, worth a try if you're in the Pentagon City area and want some authentic-ish Chinese food

Yelp
This place is so good! They have only been open a month! Service was excellent, food was fresh, atmosphere so cute! I had the beef chow fun (they put a lot of meat in this one and I loved that it smelled freshly charred off the wok), crispy eggplant (so light n crispy n so good) and shrimp stuffed egg rolls (and they really meant it when they say stuffed!). For dessert, I got the pineapple bun with salted egg yolk cream and it was so freaking good. I've never had a pineapple bun before, so this one sets the bar for sure! Love that i have leftovers cuz it was a great meal! The only thing I did not like was thw chili oil...it seemed a lil burnt, but didn't have any heat or flavor or maybe I'm just used to really hot hot chili oil lol. Other than that, id definitely come again! I hope they keep up with the same momentum and don't lose it!

Yelp
I ordered the roasted duck, but it was served rather cold and mostly fatty -- about 80% fat with very little meat. The skin was not crispy at all and felt thick and heavy. The flavor of the dishes overall was quite average, yet the prices felt overpriced for the quality. Seafood soup specially. The only positive aspect was that the place itself looked clean and cozy, but the food definitely did not live up to expectations.

Yelp
The place is 2 weeks old so IMO it has some menu adjustments to make. The menu features few "standard fare" Chinese options. Always looking for a good hot and sour soup or steamed dumplings but sorry no. The 2 dishes we had were very good but we did not see an appetizer or soup that we recognized. Service was excellent and ownership was engaging talking about food options. Frog is not on my go to list. But they were very nice and authentic. Hoping for future menu items better suited to my tastes but the place was busy and food kept coming out from the kitchen. Prices were a little steep and attributed that to high rent and labor. Very upscale decor. May go back for the whole fish that looked very good.

Yelp
This is a stunningly beautiful restaurant with translucent stone ceiling lights, green velvet banquettes, marble tabletops, large windows, and custom made wood and glass room dividers that can cordon off a beautifully airy, light-filled sophisticated private room. The service is attentive, though with this being its first month, a few kinks could be worked out like having the freshly cooked dishes be brought out sooner while they're still piping hot. My favorite dish was the tree mushroom and duck soup. The soup bowl was almost dangerously hot to the touch, and the soup was a truly long-cooked soup (老湯) with sumptuously soft pieces of duck. The shaumai (shrimp and pork) dumplings were just a bit big - smaller size, daintier even would have been nice. The beef chow fun 乾炒牛河 had thinner 河粉 (rice casserole) that captured the flavor of the beef and soy sauce consistently throughout the dish, though again, serving it as soon as it is cooked and ready would be key to the best temperature for this dish. The tea service (a glass teapot just big enough for 2-3 over a wood slat tea candle) is so perfect both in looks and in functionality - why can't all tea everywhere be served as well as it is here?!?! Overall, with a few tweaks and maybe just a little more adventure and creativity to the dishes, this would be the best Chinese restaurant in the DMV region. It certainly maybe the most beautiful!!

Yelp
New place in Pentagon City/Row. Big space and plenty of ambiance. The food selection is plentiful. Have only been there once, during Restaurant Week. Authentic and flavorful. Great service too.

Yelp
The food was incredible, fresh, and flavorful. The sizzling chicken pot and steamed pork patty with salted fish were incredibly good. Very authentic Cantonese cooking with some unique menu items I don't often see at other restaurants in the area. I've only ever had home-cooked steamed pork patty (蒸肉饼), and I was very impressed with 1983's version with the salted fish. Service was friendly, restaurant was a bit busy. We didn't mind waiting a little, but food came out slowly. The restaurant's interior was beautiful and felt high end, but the food prices were quite reasonable.

Yelp
A very culture surrounding dinning place. Very relaxing. Food is good. Service needs improve! We will return!

Yelp
The food has delicious, well-balanced flavors, really good taste but the service leaves much to be desired--slow and inattentive. Beautiful place but unfortunately the service is really poor.

Yelp
This restaurant made me sick for 7 days!!!!! Upon arriving the boss lady was pleasant & kind so I was excited to eat here. The boss lady only sat us down and never came back. Her waitresses WERE HORRIBLE. The girls were very lazy. They brought out the food without utensils or plates/bowl for us to eat with. They just stand around & I had to ask multiple times for simple things like spoon & fork. My Rice never came. By an hour plus into the meal, I had to hound the waitress who was standing around to get her attention where is my rice- it took her 10 more minutes and she brought out (cold rice) that look like someone ate part of it but I gave it a chance & When I ate it, the rice was hard and cold. My husband had to tell her and she came out with new rice immediately that didn't look touched this time & had steam coming out of the rice (very bizarre) like she wanted to see if I would just eat left over food that people throw away??? The place wasn't busy but to get any service was ridiculous- all the waitress was standing around just not caring. After I ate the food, I felt sick an hour later!!! I had to throw away all my leftover food. It was a waste of $118 just to get sick with crappy services. It took over an hour to get my food & it's only because I finally stood up to ask. Horrible place I wouldn't recommend not even to my worse enemy

Yelp
This is a new restaurant that serves authentic Chinese food which is something that was sorely needed in Pentagon city. The interior itself is very pretty and the food came out quickly. We ordered the salt and pepper squid, crispy beef, beef chow fun, and the claypot chicken. The portions were pretty generous and came out piping hot. Will def be coming back.

Yelp
They served dim sum but not an authentic place. First they don't actively serve hot tea when we sit down. Each piece of Shrimp dumplings and Siu Mai is big (traditional one are small). Some dishes come in warm but not hot. Service was okay. Environment is clean and easy to find parking.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the time with friends at 1983 Chinese Cuisine and had an amazing time. The Poached Crab Meat, Scallop, Shrimp & Crispy Rice in Lobster Soup is a must--silky broth with crackly rice. The Sautéed Beef Fillet with Black Pepper was tender and aromatic, the Sizzling Chicken in a claypot arrived bubbling hot, and the Salt-Baked Shredded Chicken was wonderfully fragrant. Staff were warm and attentive, pacing was perfect for sharing and celebrating, and the room was spotless and cozy.Great food, great service , a perfect night with friends. Five stars!

Yelp
Dim Sum food qualifying pretty good. Apparently they make them in house. The ambience is upscale and services are very friendly.

Yelp
The worst Chinese restaurant in DC area. Char siu takes over 40 minutes then tastes like sweet beef jerky. Egg yolk prawn tastes like custard cream prawn smelling vanilla! Dumplings was dry no flavor, maybe forgot salt? We almost suspected there was no chef that day. Do not go this restaurant. This area has a lot of good Chinese restaurants.

Yelp
A wonderful addition to Pentagon Row. The Dim Sum lunch option was delicious, with quick and attentive service, and the restaurant offers a beautiful ambiance throughout. I'm looking forward to when they start serving alcohol. I'll definitely be stopping by again.

Yelp
The service and the food were so good. When we went there they didn't serve alcohol but now that I see that their bar is open will definitely come back.

Yelp
Service: 3 out of 5. Obvious that most of service staff is young and inexperienced. Hostess gave away our table despite having reservations. Reason given was that another group of similar size came in and she thought they were us. Once they pulled a few smaller tables together, we were seated. Took 15 minutes for them to bring us water; young kid who took our food order initially mixed it up. Finally, a more experienced staff member took over and there were no more issues with the service. Felt bad for her because she was obviously the go to person and it seemed she was doing everything for half the tables there. Food: 4.5 out of 5. We ordered 12 dishes and 11 were outstanding. Traditional Cantonese. Fresh ingredients and prepared/cooked perfectly; best were the jelly fish, honey glazed char shu, eggplant, whole steamed fish, hot pot. The only disappointment was the lo mein (celebrating a birthday so had to get a noodle dish). Had an odd overpowering taste of cumin (5 spice maybe) that made it bitter. Drinks: N/A. Only sodas and water, waiting for their liquor license. Suggested that they put that info on their website. Ambiance: 4 out of 5. Nice clean modern space. Mix of tables, booths, and it looked like they had a private room in the back. Grew up working in my dad's restaurants in DC/VA for over 30 years. This place has the pieces to be very successful if they can get the service right.

Yelp
High end Cantonese place. Beautiful ambiance. Feels like Hong Kong, where my in-laws live. Best Chinese in the area. The roast duck was juicy and crisp. The mapo tofu spicy and delicious. The honey beef crispy and sweet. Eggplant casserole melts in your mouth. Crispy shrimp excellent. The mango dessert was refreshing, and the Portugués egg tarts taste like they do in Macau. Went with foodie friends who also loved it. We will be back.

Yelp
This place is easy to love. High end Chinese in a great location with excellent service. On our first trip there we found the crispy honey chili beef, the mongolian beef, and the Choy Sum (which is a vegetable similar to wok choy) to be very good. The shrimp Shu Mai were outstanding, as was the hand shredded eggplant appetizer. The garlic pork ribs were good but not great. They were short ribs with a dry rub that wasn't particularly flavorful. I wouldn't get them again, especially since there was only 4 of them for $16. Similarly, the beef chow fun was good but not great. I was expecting the long broad noodles and they were much smaller. Next time I through I plan to try the orange beef and the egg rolls, both of which friends have raved about. Worth knowing is that the Dim Sum part of the menu is only available from 11-4 each day. I'm definitely going back soon for it.

Yelp
1983 Chinese Cuisine features a number of unique Cantonese dishes. The ambiance is lovely. Service at lunch was excellent, although they are only a few weeks into service so they are still getting things nailed down. The Siu Mai was excellent. The Beef Ball was outstanding - so light an fluffy. We enjoyed Turnip Cake which has great flavor, but could have been crispier. The Snow Peas with Chinese Sausage had great flavor, but were a little oily. I liked the shrimp on a lotus root slice with an eggy sauce, but my friend was put off by the topping. The restaurant is seeking feedback. You should go and help them out.

Yelp
Authentic food prepared very well. A small challenge to bring less adventurous eaters to this establishment. Recommend the people and will try again

Alex E.

Yelp
Amazing service, great portion sizes for the unique and VERY flavorful food. Nothing tasted too heavy or oily, and I especially loved the shredded eggplant. The mongolian beef was great and so was the egg custard dessert. The ambience and decor was absolutely stunning with beautiful paintings and an art-deco feel. 10/10 Definitely try this place if you're near Pentagon City!

Yelp
Do not go here if you don't want to spend all day in the restaurant and then get sick after eating. My wife and I didn't get our food for an hour after sitting down and the restaurant wasn't busy. We also had to ask several times for our side dishes and rice to be brought out and then when we finally got the rice IT WAS OLD AND GAVE MY WIFE FOOD POISONING. 0/10 save yourself time money and health

Yelp
I left out mad at myself for coming here. The food tasted mediocre. It was overpriced with small portions. The decoration was nice. The service was ok. I won't come here again.

Marichel G.

Yelp
The ambience was very nice and the food was incredibly delicious. My family and I ordered the Dry scallops and shrimp fried rice, sliced fish in black bean sauce, Mongolian Beef and Crispy Jumbo Shrimp in Garlic. All the dishes were so yummy. And the staff were friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant to others in a heartbeat! Thanks for a great dinner!

Yelp
A new addition to the neighborhood that is very welcoming. The restaurant is very nice and cozy. My friend and I ordered the black pepper ribs, shrimp spring rolls and fried rice. We enjoyed everything we ordered and will certainly return to try other menu items. The staff is limited since they just opened but they were efficient. The managers/owners took the time to stop by our table to see if everything was satisfactory and both men couldn't have been more friendly. Give them a try. You'll be glad you did!
