New Speakeasy Bar J. Stephens Opens in Downtown Austin - Eater Austin

"The team behind Sixth Street restaurants and bars Happy Chicks and BBG’s (née Bikinis) opened up a new speakeasy this month in downtown Austin. ATX Brands’s J. Stephens Bar is now open at 214 East Sixth Street as of mid-August. The cocktail menu focuses on the 1920s. Of the house cocktails, there are drinks like the light, fruity, and refreshing Once Upon a Time in Austin; the Embezzlement, a play on the Swizzle; and the tiki Kansas City Shuffle. There’s a list of classic cocktails from the era as well, spanning the Bee’s Knees to sloe gin fizzes to Vieux Carre to Mai Tais. J. Stephens also serves food, as well, with a menu that works well in conjunction with drinking. Among the dishes are charcuterie boards, queso-infused meatballs, triple-decker grilled cheese sandwiches, and fried chicken skins served with smoke maple syrup. Overseeing the beverages at J. Stephens is ATX Brands’s beverage director Mark Yawn, who had previously been with Ranch 616, She’s Not Here, and Midnight Cowboy. The food menu is courtesy of ATX’s kitchen manager Josue Escobar. Owner Doug Guller based the name of the bar on the story of a man, John Waller Stephens, Jr., who had been the bookkeeper of a furniture store at the Sixth Street space in the 1920s. After being accused of embezzling money from the business, he committed suicide. Over the past ten or so years that Guller had operated restaurants in the building, employees reported strange things happening, like water being randomly turned on. He named the bar after Stephens, Jr., as a way “to make peace with him and get him on our side,” he said. Eater wasn’t able to independently verify this story. J. Stephens is surrounded by other speakeasies in downtown Austin, ranging from difficult to entry to not-so-difficult, like Midnight Cowboy, Here Nor There, Small Victory, Firehouse Hostel, and Red Headed Stepchild. J. Stephens is open from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. The entrance of the bar is found on the alley behind the Sixth Street building, indicated by the red light. Previously the space had served as extra seating for Happy Chicks and BBG’s." - Nadia Chaudhury

Yelp
We had a great experience at Eden! Miguel was fantastic! Very knowledgeable and personable. Always enjoy sitting at a bar watching mixologists work their magic.

Yelp
OMG. Watch out Whistler's, we think we just found ourselves our new favorite old fashioned. Incredibly smooth and one you want to slow down and sip on!! Hidden behind Dirty Sixth in an Alley Way, Eden us a perfect place to wind down your evening. Creative mixologists, truly enjoying the craft. A small and intimate space. Hint: you may be tempted by fried chicken nearby, but don't do it. Don't ruin the taste left in your mouth by Eden. Pro Tip: order the Dandelion & Disco (mezcal) and Taste of Eden (gin)

Yelp
I have been here twice. The first time, great experience (with the exception of how hot is was - as we were there in winter and heater was making us take clothes off). This last time, left A LOT to be desired. Our visit was fraught with issues. 1. Menu is limited (maybe 8-10 cocktails - which is small for a business who only focuses on cocktails). But they state they can make anything (see more about this below). 2. More than once they forget to put in our order or they were "sure what happened." 3. Their liquor offerings are something you'd expect of a regular bar or Chili's. Gin options were Tanqueray, Beefeater, Bombay (a few versions), etc. The only "special" gin they had was Monkey47...FOR $50 AN OUNCE!!!!! First, if you're a cocktail bar and your special gin is Monkey47, that is sad. Second, a bottle of this typically less than $50. Our server was really nice and apologized for the excuses he was having to make. Overall, I likely wouldn't go back for a third time (for reasons #1 & 3, mostly). I go to cocktail bars/speakeasies for the unique flavors, liquor options, and creative menus. This isn't that, sadly.

Yelp
Got a chance to be in Austin for work recently and thought I'd give myself a little speakeasy tour. Eden was my first stop and it was just absolutely delightful. While there, I ran into a group of people that lived in St. Clair Shores which is not to far from where I live in Michigan. What are the odds of that? They were kind enough to invite me to join them since I was on my own, but I was on a schedule. Eden reminds me of a bar we have back home called Black Salt. Both base their cocktails on ancient remedies and theories and their drinks have a very earthy feel to them. I tried a couple of their craft cocktails and they were both excellent. The bartender was both attentive and efficient. I was here pretty early as it was the first stop on the tour, so it was super calm for the moment but it's not a large venue so I imagine it gets loaded up pretty quickly. Cute spot, nice drinks.

Yelp
Very intimate experience! Phones are discouraged and flash photography is not allowed which is nice. However, drinks were okay. They have different themes and we were there for the earthy/herbal theme. It was kind of surprising that some of the drinks were pretty syrupy especially with the theme and intention of wellness. I personally believe that $20 was pretty pricey for these drinks. Fun vibes though The staff offered for us to order an additional drink before our reservation was up(about 1.5 hours), so we did. We were not done with our drinks yet when we were told that the other reservation was there and we needed to leave when there were two other tables around us that could seat 2-6 people. The next reservation was for 2 people. Really stinks when we paid $20-$22 per drink

Yelp
I enjoyed the vibe of Eden Cocktail Room. It's tucked away in an alley behind 6th Street. I loved that it's cozy without being overdone or feeling too new or flashy. The service was lively--maybe too lively? I ordered The Diary of Eve. The drink was good. My main complaint is that it wasn't cold enough. Overall, my experience wasn't perfect, but I enjoyed the simplicity of the visit. There are a lot of new, polished speakeasies around town, but I still think Eden is worth trying!

Yelp
Speakeasy in an alley.. can't get better than that. Look for the purple door with the red light. Must have reservations as the place is small, but cozy. If you are looking for a little pick me up with a hint of dessert then the Water of Life is your drink. It's warm due to the coffee added to it. It's not overly sweet but you can definitely taste the chocolate and hit of salted caramel.
google avatar

Yelp
Eh. Seems the exclusivity of this place is because they don't sit more than 2-3 tables. We arrived for our reservation and were asked to wait. After seeing multiple parties leave, we still waited. Once we were finally sat, there was only one other party and multiple empty tables. We also had to ask someone who wasn't attending us for our check because we weren't checked on. Cocktails were decent, but nothing special. Overall not a fan.
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
Cool vibe, but seemed grimey inside. The cocktails weren't as good as other speakeasies in the area.

Yelp
Stopped in this evening and I can tell you we are so glad we did. The cocktails were nice, ambiance nice but Andrew and Jason were phenomenal! They were both so funny and personable. I can't wait to go back

Yelp
The Water of Life (Irish coffee type drink) was spectacular. Everything else was pretty mediocre. Service left a LOT to be desired. There was no host to greet us when we arrived for our 6:30 reservation; we eventually just walked in. Our server almost never came over to check in us, even though the server to patron ration was about 1:4. We had to order at the bar, flag the waiter down for service, and ask for our check twice, eventually just paying up at that bar, which was super awkward. A place like this so supposed to be an intimate experience, so the lack of service was a huge disappointment. The place is VERY small, so it didn't really make sense. The decor inside is cute, but was it enough to come back? My second drink definitely was nothing to write home about. The Water of Life, in my opinion, was their only saving grace. At $16-$18 a drink, I expected a lot more.

Yelp
It's a bit tricky to find the entrance but we finally made it to get through the alley. The drinks were absolutely tasty and great, with the highly curated menu - I thought I was ready a poem. We didn't have reservations but still got seated quickly within 10minutes (on a Monday night though). The price is definitely on a higher end, almost one of the highest that I have tried in the area, and I just wished the volume could be low down a bit more so we didn't have to speak up louder to each other.
google avatar

Tanushri S.

Yelp
The overall vibe is very dark and moody! The drinks in my personal opinion were okay, I enjoyed the sweeter options but some of their other drinks felt a bit lackluster. Also, the day we visited there was a distinct smell at the bar, a bit off putting.. but this could be a one of instance. The host was very friendly & helpful! It could be a neat date night spot, I would recommend at-least trying the speakeasy once!

Yelp
I am so grateful I stumbled into this amazing little bar the other day! It is very much hard to find and the entry is in an alley, but worth the hunt and anxiety when you have a moment of doubt about what you're getting yourself into. When you enter, there is a dark sign and a curtain guiding you into a cozy bar with great music (their Spotify is on their website). Chris and Trevor were awesome - I came solo and they took a lot of time giving me awesome recommendations for Austin. I felt like I had a solid insider look at some of the best spots in the area, and I ended up staying out much later than I planned because I was having such a good time! Obviously, you also come for the drinks and these hold up to the hype. I had the Fall of Dram which is a beautifully balanced scotch drink with a hint of coconut. I followed it with the Fruit of the Forbidden, a floral vodka based cocktail. Both were delicious! I never would have tried the scotch drink (mostly because I had no clue what Monkey Shoulder is) and I'm so glad it came recommended!

Yelp
I don't live in the area, but came here with two of my friends a couple weekends ago. The ambiance is wonderful and a great surprise being that it's so far removed from the nearby Dirty 6. We had excellent service and the server even went as far as telling us if we didn't like our drinks, they would be happy to make a new drink. I don't drink a lot personally, and only ordered one drink which was The Fall of Dram. Being completely honest, it was hands down the best alcoholic drink I've ever had. Wish I knew how to make it at home! I highly recommend this place if you're ever in Austin and looking for a cocktail bar with quiet vibes, great ambiance, wonderful service and excellent drinks. Tip: make sure to get a reservation! The location is very small.

Yelp
Eden is a fairly new speakeasy cocktail bar on 6th street. Definitely make reservations to come here because it is small and booked out. Finding this place was not easy and my sister and I struggled for a while. They did give good directions though, we just weren't expecting it to be in an alleyway with homeless people and garbage haha! However, once you find that red light and make your way inside you are instantly transported to another dimension? It seems like it! This ambiance is dark, sexy and sophisticated. Perfect for a date night or a small friend outing. They had our table and menus ready. Very creative drinks on the menu that goes with the name and meaning of Eden. I enjoyed the Dairy of Eve drink and my sister enjoyed the water of life. Definitely would recommend going here and I will be back.
google avatar

Tucker H.

Yelp
Small so you'll want (need?) a reservation, and a speakeasy vibe for sure. We found the service to be good, and the drinks excellent. The Water of Life seemed to be the table's favorite, but 'Dust to Dust' and 'Reap & Sow' both got repeat orders as well from the group. Recommended!
google avatar

Darlene B.

Yelp
When one of your best friends is in town, you have to make the most of it. After doing the dinner at a nice restaurant, then partying/dancing at another club, we ended the night here at this speakeasy. It was a very intimate, very sophisticated vibe and we liked it! They had some tropical inspired drinks, as well as some classics. We probably would've enjoyed it more if we weren't 3 tequila shots deep, but it was still a nice way to end the night. We had some trouble finding the spot at first because we ended up on the other side of the street, but you actually need to go in the alley. I feel like half the fun about speakeasies are finding it, especially in the middle of a busy place like Dirty 6!
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
Ambiance was fun, server was interesting. It took too long to get drinks, especially considering so few were there... I didn't feel like there was much booze in it, and it was $20, making it the most expensive drink I've had in the last week. Lots of opportunity for the location to be cool, but needs work.
google avatar

Tash M.

Yelp
The name of this speakeasy refers to the biblical garden. If this is what the apple tastes like, consider me an eternal sinner!!! The focus here is on fresh ingredients and creative infusions to bring the classics to a whole new level!! I am currently sipping "Adam" and wow did eve miss out!!! Best spin on a Manhattan I've ever had!!!!! I don't think I can go back to the "original sin". Ambience is very chill and barkeeps are talented, so helpful and courteous. The location is just the right amount of tricky to make it feel like a real speakeasy. Sinners are indeed much more fun!!! Truly and unequivocally fantastic!!!!!!

Yelp
This is the definition of a true Speakeasy... Address sends you to a spot, but when you get there it's a "front". Keep looking, or go to the site for exact directions. The place is where you least expect it. Purple doors, as if was meant for me (being my favorite color). Then a second pair of doors with Eden written on it, opens the actual place. Dark, with the bar being the first thing you see, then it opens up to a small room where a limited amount of people (with reservations) enjoy their libations. We were escorted to our table, and presented with menus by the lovely girl introducing us to their concept. She was amazing with recommendations and I ended having the Diary of Eve. Smooth, not too sweet and beautifully garnished with a rose petal. The Water of Life was also incredibly good. It was almost like an Irish Coffee but better with the sweetness of the salted caramel and chocolate cream. The mixologist also came to our table to see how we had liked our drinks and made a bit of conversation with us before having to go back to make other drinks. Really enjoyed the personable and friendly service they both provided. Eden is a "must do" in Austin.
google avatar

Carolyn B.

Yelp
Ambiance was lovely, service was impeccable. Found the cocktails a little uninspired. They were pretty much prohibition era classics, just with Garden of Eden themed names. Well executed, but kind of basic considering the exceptionally high pricing.
google avatar

Jeremy R.

Yelp
Rated 2 Stars because of their service and availability. Ignore the posted hours; they will have last call 30 minutes before closing (midnight), even when the bar has plenty of thirsty patrons. It seemed like the server was more interested in pre-closing the bar, rather than serving us. We waited with empty glasses for 15 minutes. Drink quality and ambiance were great. I will try the place again and edit the review if the experience is better.
google avatar

Sandy Y.

Yelp
We got a cocktail each. Each one was meticulously executed. Both were variations of different cocktails but you can tell that it was well thought out. Before choosing our drinks, we asked a bunch of questions. To which, each was answered. The server and bartender knew what they were talking about, which give me confidence to say that this spot is worth a visit.
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
Eden, while a cute, intimate speakeasy setting, would not be my pick to return to, with all the choices in Austin. Most of this was due to service. Our server was very personable and funny, but introduced himself to our table in the same way 3 times, did not have our drink order correct multiple times, and brought another tables check to our table. It was very hard for us to get our check and we had to both get it and return it to the bar, as he was not very attentive. We did enjoy our drinks-though I would not say they were highly unique or different than standard cocktails, all with a bit of a banana flavor added.
google avatar

Bruce L.

Yelp
Terrible service, screwed up our orders multiple times. Not great ambiance. Didn't give correct change. Won't be going back.
google avatar

Vivian F.

Yelp
Disappointed by the overall experience. Drinks were mediocre. Real kick was the time limit. We received the check without asking and were told our time was "up". We had our first round and it was 50 minutes in. Pretty sure I saw a 90 minute time limit when I made reservations. Also there is only one entrance in or out, and it is down a dark alley with a lot of sewage water running. Look for the purple door.
google avatar

Vance W.

Yelp
An amazing hidden speakeasy, in the alley and behind an unmarked door. It will take your eyes some time to adjust to the dim lighting, but it is absolutely worth the effort! Amazing handcrafted cocktails, served in a unique and cozy setting with a groovy vibe.
google avatar

Samantha M.

Yelp
Taste of Eden- really overwhelming with the raspberry flavor. Weird raspberry dust that got all over my hands while drinking? Water of life- amazing! Like an upgraded espresso martini but warm and perfect for the chillier weather we have been having! Super super kind, knowledgeable, and well put together staff. Will be back!
google avatar

Kristina C.

Yelp
Best cocktails we had in Austin on a trip for my birthday! Parking is metered on the street (good luck!). Walk about half way down the alley and look for the purple door across from the dumpsters. Menu is incredible and several innovative concepts I haven't seen anywhere else. Inside is intimate without feeling cramped. Will definitely be back when I am in town again!

Yelp
Loveeee! My boyfriend and I have been really into speakeasies lately, and this may just be one of our new faves. It's difficult to find a true speakeasy in Austin, but Eden is one of the few that does it really well. This place was started by the same owners as Here Nor There, no it's no surprise that the cocktails, service, and vibes were all on point. It's difficult to find (which adds to the secretive vibe!) so here's how to find it - when you're on 6th or 7th street, walk down San Jacinto Blvd or Brazos St and you'll see an alleyway. Walk down that and you'll see two purple door. Once you go through those, you'll see Eden. I was definitely a little skeptical walking down an alleyway and wouldn't recommend doing this alone or at night. Once we entered, we were welcomed with red curtains and a front desk where we could check in - Eden takes reservations ahead of time and seats are pretty limited so I would recommend securing your spot beforehand. The inside of the bar was dimly lit and had little candles at each table - perfect for a speakeasy vibe! We loved every single cocktail we ordered! Here's what we had: Diary of Eve - my favorite! I'm a sucker for foamy, egg-white drinks and this one was just so refreshing, light, and delicious. Reap & Sow - think spicy (kinda) margarita! Loved this one but am still partial towards Diary of Eve. In Lieu of Taboo - fruity and yummy! This one was my boyfriend's favorite. Taste of Eden - The drink itself was really good but the glass had raspberry flakes which can be a hit or miss. Overall, I would highly recommend this spot for a date night, girl's night, and just a nice night out with friends. We had a great time!

Yelp
The ambiance is perfect. Greeted at the hidden alley door by owner Chris Crow, we were led through the curtain into a cozy, dim sanctuary contrasting the debauchery of Dirty Sixth Street. Just picture a tiny hidden room nestled in some obscure core of the block surrounded by Happy Chicks, Voodoo Doughnuts, and Recess Arcade Bar and you might get a sense of how Eden can serve as an oasis from the chaos. Opened for about a year and a half, I was very excited when I learned that the owner was tending bar at my absolute favorite Austin speakeasy for almost three years and shocked that this spot had somehow never crossed my radar. Created in 2011 by Joaquín Simó of NYC's Death & Co, "Naked and Famous" is one of my favorite cocktails. It consists of mezcal, aperol, yellow chartreuse, and lime. When I saw the "Naked and Shameless" [illegal mezcal, epsilon, mango-infused aperol, chartreuse, citrus, fresh banana] on the menu, I was naturally very excited to try Eden Cocktail Room's twist on my go-to. I was very disappointed when I took my first sip and discovered that it was basically a glorified tiki cocktail. The smoke was barely even perceptible. I had no intention of turning the drink back but it was clear to the server that I was dissatisfied -- he insisted that he resolve the situation. I was much happier with my second choice, "Dust to Dust" [altos reposed, islay scotch, amaro, mañana montenegro, pine des charentes]. But my major complaint about my experience is that -- on bustling Sunday-night-of-a-holiday-weekend -- the entire place was being run by only two employees. So returning a drink and waiting for a replacement ate away at the limited amount of time that we had before leaving for our dinner reservation. If the server had alerted me that their interpretation had a much sweeter profile than the original, it would have saved a lot of time and effort. "Water of Life" [jefferson's bourbon, salted caramel, demerara, filter coffee, chocolate cream] was a perfect finisher. It is similar (and serves the same purpose) as Here Nor There's "Sláinte." Overall, we had a nice time but with a few minor tweaks, this spot could cultivate a much better customer experience.
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
Love the vibes here. Hidden, dark, intimate. Service is super friendly and they have innovative cocktails with a theme true to its namesake. Yes, cocktails are pricey but that's expected. A recommendation is probably needed. Just find the red light over the purple doors!
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
They joke and say they get the spillover from folks that can't get a reservation at Here Nor There, and after having been to both in the last week, I can honestly say it's a fine substitute that completely holds its own. The word hasn't gotten out yet so you can have the place all to yourself, essentially. It's not huge, but very comfy! You enter through a purple door down an alley and while the alley may not be sexy, Eden sure is. I'm pretty sure our group had everything on the menu and beyond the clever names and gorgeous glassware, the beverages themselves are fantastic. Easy sipping...like, reaaaaaaaal easy sipping! The fan favorites of the table were the Water of Life (their boozy coffee drink), the Reap & Sow (just the right amount of habanero) and their gin martini (they use a Japanese gin that was so smooth!). Cocktails are $15 so pace yourself!
google avatar

Esteban G.

Yelp
This place is great. The drinks are very tasty, the vibes are great, and staff is friendly. I've been here a few times whenever it's not so packed and it's always been very enjoyable. I wish they just did more walk-ins. I think that they require reservations even when the floor isn't full, which I find a little odd. Other than that it's great spot.

Yelp
We found a new speakeasy in Austin! It feels like an intimate night out, and the staff is well-versed in all things craft drinks. The cocktails are pretty damn good and worth checking out. Let's get into the review! Pros: - Innovative craft cocktails - Staff loves what they do - Intimate + speakeasy vibes - Easy menu + short - Great convos at the bar - Clear ice (A MUST) - Glassware on point Cons: - Entrance in the alley - Smaller than expected - Parking in the area Drinks: - Old fashioned - Taste of Eden - Custom-made drinks Summary We did a tour around the area for some speakeasies, and Eden is a place you have to try! From the glassware to the clear ice cubes, they paid attention to the little things. You can't say you have craft cocktails, but your ice is out of wack. It's like going to a sushi spot, and the rice is crap, NO BUENO. Parking was a bit hard to find as it's around the 6th Street area, so it's crazy packed. However, if you plan on making it a crazy night out, Uber/Lyft, so parking is not an issue. The entrance is in the alleyway, not on the main 6th street area, but you can't miss the two big purple doors. It's not a giant bar, so make sure you reserve your spot in advance. The drinks are tremendous. Some places can make the old fashioned overly sweet, but this one was just right. Even expressing the peel to give it a smokey flavor was on point. We chatted up with the owner, and he created one of his favorites, and it was damn delicious. You gotta try this place if you care about the details and want an elevated experience like Here Nor There. Cheers!

Yelp
Laid back and secluded. Business casual is not enforced as some patrons were wearing hoodies and t-shirts

Celeste C.

Yelp
The bartender Iggy recommended the sunflower helianthus and I enjoyed it a ton (drink on the left). If you like gin highly recommend. Not only were the drinks good, but Iggy was actually the one who made the experience a fun one. He was friendly, funny, and overall a great person. This was my first time here and I'd definitely come back. Don't forget to tip your bartenders by the way!

Yelp
I really was looking forward to visiting my speakeasy in Austin and while it didn't disappoint I just happened to come on a bad night for the business. Whatever issue a business could experience they were experiencing on this evening. However, my cocktail was good and I would like to return to see what the experience is like.

Yelp
A new speakeasy in Austin! I came here on Saturday night and was able to sneak in without a reservation cause it was still early. My date and I were at the firehouse lounge prior so it was an easy find right behind the same building. I highly recommend getting a reservation ahead of time. We got the couch but no table for our drinks. That's what happen when you don't make reservations. The cocktails were Garden of Eden themed and they were fabulous. The menu design alone makes me wanna try everything. I had the Fruits of the Forbidden and Reap and Sow. Both were really delicious and beautifully presented. The music were also easy to jam to and not too loud for a conversation. For those who's all about the gram, there's also a really cute neon sign on the wall you can take photos with. I definitely will be back but with a reservation next time.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Ive been here a few times and both experiences were pleasant! The entrance isn't super hard to find (just look for the red light in the back alley) but parking can be challenging as its right on 6th street! Interior of the speakeasy is super cozy and chill! Great for hanging out w a small group of friends and not super loud! Its not that big so id recommend getting a reservation if you plan on coming with a group. Drinks are good and decently strong! Service is also super friendly and welcoming both times I've been here :) will def be back!

Yelp
We had made a reservation for Here Nor There, but it was cancelled day of. I had heard about this place shortly after and decided to give it a try...I'm so glad we did! It's quite a small, exclusive speakeasy so I would definitely recommend making a reservation on popular nights. The bartender was incredibly helpful in choosing a cocktail and provided recommendations. We both really enjoyed our drinks and time spent in this cozy, swanky speakeasy. Perfect for a date night.

Yelp
Its a cool entrance and probably the most truly "speakeasy" entrance of the 7 downtown. The walk in dark ambiance is what really originally got me excited about finding secret bars. We had a reservation and were the only people in the entire bar and asked for the bar seats. They said those seats were claimed which is fine but awkward since the place was empty on a Tues. I had the Fall of Dram which was solid and I forgot the other drink my friend had and it was good. But it was pretty warm inside and only a couple other groups were seated while inside. (The bar seats were never taken the 30-40 minutes we were there) . Overall I just didn't feel welcome being put at a side table in an empty bar and probably would not come back. I won't list the 7 downtown Austin Speakeasies but this would be my least favorite of the bunch.

Yelp
was so excited to try out this place. cute little speakeasy. the lighting is really dark so we needed to use the light from our phones to be able to see the menu. the manager quickly rushed to our table and said we cannot use the lights as it's too bright and it will flash every one in the eyes so he then gave us a little flashlight (mind you it was brighter than the lights on our phones) then we went to take photos and had the flash on (room lighting is horrible) so he then again came up to us and said we cannot use flash bc there's mirrors and it will light up the whole room (all while every other table was using flash and he did not say anything to those guests). I felt like he was targeting our group, for no reason. he was very uptight the whole time. like dude chill. it's a speakeasy. as we were leaving, my gf and I wanted to touch up our makeup and he said "if you're closing the door, only one person can be in there at a time" ... like why does it matter? we are just touching up our makeup?? that manager just gave us bad vibes which led me to give a 2 star review. as for the drinks, it's a cool concept but the drinks were a little on the sweet side even though we said light sweet. we hopped to a few different speakeasies in the area and had a much better time.

Yelp
Thank you fellow yelps for recommending this hidden gem!!! My husband and I enjoyed a couple of perfectly crafted cocktails here last night. Everything from the hidden alleyway entrance, to the chill music & swank velvet chairs set the perfect speakeasy mood. Our waitress and bartender were both very attentive and clearly love their job & appreciated our presence. Their menu of cocktails are unique, complex & deliciously balanced, with lots of herbal influences. Even the glassware & custom ice cubes are stunning. Next time I am in Austin I will make sure to make a reservation here again. Thanks Eden for a memorable & tasty date night!

Yelp
This place is dope!!!! The entrance is a purple door under the red light in backstreet. The inside had a secret and intimate vibe with beautiful candle lights. The bartender was really nice to talk to and the drinks were absolutely gorgeous. I would definitely come back here for other drinks. The drink menu gave good twists to some classical cocktails.

Yelp
Don't waste your time. Much better options. They didn't have 2 of the 8 drinks in the menu. Did not give an options to replace. Drinks not worth $22 and the weak pour on caprianha was literally half a normal drink

Yelp
I loved this little speakeasy! It was very relaxed and laidback, with great service. Make sure you have a reservation since it's a small spot. We had the Water of Life, Reap and Sow, and the Naked & Shameless. All three drinks were delicious and you could tell that a lot of care went into the creation.

Yelp
Excellent service and courtesy, great host, very good drinks. Flaw: Atmosphere is lacking. From the website, I was expecting a swank & classy spot, but it comes off as cheap and tawdry. Music was loud and a bit harsh. A painted mural was rather tacky and sophomoric. Whole place needs a design overhaul. It may have just been an off-night, but: No bar snacks were available, the overly-profane rap music was oddly jarring in the (otherwise) silence (there was only one other table with guests at 8:30p) and it just felt empty, no vibe. Could not get our night on. So, we had one (very good) drink and changed locations to Higher Ground. (Here Nor There was our first pick, but was totally booked.)
