21c Museum Hotel Louisville

"Why book? This boutique hotel is the flagship of the 21c Museum Hotels—a brand of hotels that double as museums. The hotel is a gathering place to enjoy local and rotating contemporary art exhibitions while sipping on bourbon from Kentucky's finest distilleries. It’s like stepping into an artistic playground with pieces on every corner of the atrium. Set the scene Opened in 2006, 21c Louisville’s 91-room boutique hotel is nestled in downtown Louisville on historic West Main Street, along Museum Row. Walking into the hotel, you’re immediately greeted by eccentric art pieces, from sculptures to paintings and photographs, as well as the hotel’s staple mascot, the four-foot red penguin sculpted from recycled plastic. Colleagues, groups of friends, and wedding parties gather at the bar, restaurant, or main museum space downstairs. Guests and non-guests alike can wander through the museum while sipping on drinks from the bar. The museum is open 24/7, so there is plenty of opportunity to spend the day and night marveling at 21st-century contemporary art. The backstory Founded by contemporary art collectors and preservationists Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, the hotel was born as part of a revitalization of the area, as well as to foster a deeper appreciation of contemporary art. They refurbished a tobacco and bourbon warehouse built in the 1800s, keeping original elements of the building like exposed wood beams and vintage ductwork. 21c Museum Hotels is North America’s largest multi-venue museum dedicated solely to collecting and exhibiting the art of the 21st century and has more than 78,500 square feet of exhibition space. The art is open to the public daily, free of charge. The rooms The 580-square-foot Atrium Suite has high ceilings and plenty of space. After walking down a short hallway, the room opens up into a dining room, bedroom, and living room area. Feeling like a residential home, the room features original historic features such as exposed-brick walls. Equipped with two TVs, a king-size bed, and original artwork lining the walls, the best part of the room is the bathroom’s double vanity sinks, a combination bathtub-shower, and second walk-in shower with LED lights. Aluminum water bottles are provided in the room and can be refilled with filtered water on each floor. Entry room rates start at $189 per night. Food and drink Restaurant Proof on Main highlights the bounty of the Ohio River Valley with a bar that features more than 180 Kentucky Bourbons—roughly 89 of them hand-picked from private select barrels. The restaurant and bar have different designs depending on where you are seated; the bold, colorful artwork represents the LGBT community, Louisville in the early 1900s, and pre-colonialism. Savor the fried frondosa mushrooms mixed with goat cheese and garlic gastrique, a dish that pairs nicely with Written in the Sand, a cocktail made with rye, rum, amaro, pineapple, passionfruit, green tea, cinnamon, and milk. While the white-tablecloth restaurant gives off a fine-dining vibe, it is truly a come-as-you-are space. If you’re looking for an evening activity, the hotel hosts Nightcap at the Museum every evening at 8:00; the complimentary tasting allows you to toast to Kentucky’s bourbon culture. If you’re looking to sit at the bar, it does get quite crowded in the evening. Grab your sample of Angel’s Envy Bourbon and walk around the museum exhibition. Wander around the gallery, meet new people, or take the drink back to your room. The neighborhood/area You have all of downtown Louisville at your fingertips. Walk around the corner and you’ll find Blackbeard Coffee serving gluten-free pastries, seasonal drinks, and a delicious chai latte. You’re steps from the Muhammad Ali Center, Kentucky Science Center, Waterfront Park, and KMAC Contemporary Art Museum. Head down Main Street and you’ll come across Whiskey Row for those in need of a drink. The hotel sits on a quiet corner, so your beauty sleep will not be interrupted. The service Very casual. Going up to the front desk is like talking with a friend. The front desk was responsive and always quick to answer calls. Many staff members come in their own style and there are seats at the front desk so that you can sit down and chat with them instead of having to stand. The desk has maps and information about Louisville and 24-hour valet service. Accessibility 21c Louisville has elevators that provide access to every floor in the building. The museum is flat, and has plenty of space to maneuver a wheelchair. Anything left to mention? With a beautiful view overlooking the Ohio River, the 21c Apartment Suite can be used to host parties and events. Don’t miss out on the museum shop where you can take home your own red penguin souvenir, along with bourbon and other local goodies. The walls of the hotel rooms are quite thin, so be prepared with earplugs. The property is pet-friendly." - Kayla Brock

So, I'm sad. I'm here now and this place just isn't what it used to be. We came a few years ago and the art was really fun. We stayed in a fun room. This time, I feel like we have been banished to the worst room. We are in room 325. The walls are paper thin and you can hear a pin drop in the rooms beside us. And we love dogs... But dammit if the people beside us didn't leave their dog and it was crying for like an hour. We just wanted to rescue it! Now the are in and out of their room and they are loud and we can hear everything! And the art installations aren't fun. Not edgy. Not anything but boring. That being said, the location is great for bourbon. Buzzard's Roost is an absolute must do. Amazing. Lots to do down here. Proof on main was great for dinner. Mussels and burgers across the street from the hotel was just ok. Probably won't stay here at this hotel again. It was a disappointment. But would stay in this general location.

We had an amazing 3 nights in Louisville staying here. The room was amazing, great staff was always ready to help and the museum was interesting. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. If you're wondering... Room 215 is directly behind the David statue.

Long story short, we were stuck for a night in Louisville as our flight got canceled. Checking in we were greeted by the front desk agent Anya. I told her the situation and noticed we were tired as it was a late night. She was warm friendly and compassionate. She offered to help with anything we needed. Even giving us drink tickets as it was needed. She offered suggestions on where to eat as it was late. We decided to dine at the hotel because it was open and close by. The restaurant was a half hour from closing for the evening. I know it's not the ideal time to join a restaurant before they close but we had no choice. We were greeted by Sisi who was also our server. She had great energy and didn't mind that we were coming in so close to closing. She helped us with what to order and drink, she even gave us some chocolate truffles at the end of the night. For a very long and rough day, both Sisi and Anya turned our horrible day into a better more restful one. I cannot thank them enough for being so kind.

Our stay was brief but perfect. This hotel is sleek, modern, and extremely comfortable. The art exhibits are an added bonus. We ordered room service from the hotel restaurant and it was easily one of the best meals I've ever had--and I've had food from all around the world. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. We will definitely be back soon!

Saw a review for this hotel on Trip Advisor that talked about their modern art museum and decided to try it out…. LOVED It!! Jared was the highlight of our stay… he was friendly, informative and took time to show us around and point out pieces of interest. The art is wonderful and so unique. ||Rooms were very comfortable and well appointed. Would definitely stay at a 21c again.

I stayed at 21c Louisville on November 29–30, 2024, and unfortunately, my experience was far from what you’d expect from a hotel that markets itself as a luxury property. Around 1 a.m. on my second night, I was woken up by a large cockroach in my room. I killed it and brought it down to the front desk to make them aware of the issue. The response I got was indifferent at best no real concern, no apology, no escalation. Just a shrug. The next morning, I followed up again and was offered a complimentary breakfast as a way to make up for the situation. That was their idea of a fair response to finding a cockroach in a guest room… When I checked out, I was told management would reach out to me directly. A month went by with no contact, so I eventually followed up myself. The person I spoke to didn’t seem to take it seriously and actually asked, “What do you want us to do about it?” Now, nearly seven months later, I still haven’t heard a word from hotel leadership. No apology. No explanation. No accountability. It’s one thing for a bug to get into a room, I get it, it happens. But the real problem is how little they seemed to care. The lack of professionalism, concern, and basic customer service was disappointing. I’m writing this not to attack the hotel, as it truly is a beautifully appointed offering, but to help others make informed decisions. If you’re paying premium rates and expecting a clean, guest-focused experience, I’d recommend looking elsewhere. I gave them every opportunity to address this. They chose not to. *EDITING TO ADD* The Area GM contacted me and made a solid effort to correct this issue. I appreciate the communication on their end and will give them another shot next time I'm back in town. If all goes well, I'll update the review to reflect what I'm hoping is a better overall experience.

My husband and I have stayed at the 21C Louisville many times over the years. It had been our go-to when in Louisville. But after being a repeat guest, even booking their rooftop apartment on one occasion, and continuing to encounter disengaged front desk staff, we started staying elsewhere. They've got that too-cool-for-school thing. Bad character for the service biz.|Anyway, we gave them another shot because we really value the ability to open windows or have a balcony. We booked a room with a patio (not for use in Jan., but for fresh air from stuffy, heated room). This time the service was friendly and helpful. They are still extremely "cool." All the art school grads seem to be working there. (There is a gallery off the lobby and fun art scattered in the entryways).|Rooms are comfortable. Everything was good. No complaints. We will come back.

Google
Hotel 21 delivered with comfortable beds, amazing bathroom lighting, and thoughtful toiletry details. The warm, friendly staff made everything perfect, and don't miss spotting the red penguin around the hotel! While the bar's delicious burgers and drinks were great, the real highlight was their beautifully curated art museum - the interactive installations created such a wonderful, immersive experience that made this stay truly unforgettable.

Yelp
I know that giving the 21c a 2* rating is going to make me sound pretentious, but I swear I am not. I'm as working class and easy-going as anyone you'll ever meet. And let me also be clear - I am not rating the museum. I am rating the actual hotel. So here goes... The walls are so thin that I could hear the person snoring in the room next to me. It sounded like we were separated by a curtain rather than a wall, and I'm not exaggerating. On another occasion, the individual in the room next to me was having a phone conversation, and I could hear everything. I could even hear the person on the other end of the receiver, and they were speaking at a normal volume. It was so bad, I had to open up Spotify and turn on "rain sounds" or some other white noise just to block it out. Which, in turn, probably disturbed my neighbor on the other side of the opposite wall. Sorry, y'all! It is Thunderdome out here and I need some sleep. I stayed here 5 nights, for work. Which means, I would really like a desk in the room (not a crazy ask, IMO). No desk. I had to slide this table over to the corner near an electrical outlet and work from there. And the table was just enough higher than the seat that it was uncomfortable. The room had 2 sets of curtains, but only one window. The natural light was very limited. Usually I wouldn't care so much about this, but that part make it feel almost like I was in a chamber more than a hotel room. The bathroom & shower were great. I wish they had put as much thought in the rest of the room as they had the bathroom. This place would be awesome if they had. But they hadn't, so it wasn't, and now I am sitting here writing a 2* review on a Louisville staple hotel. Go checkout the museum and eat at the restaurant, but avoid the actual hotel if you like sleep and comfort.

Yelp
During our recent stay at 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, we had some positive experiences but also encountered significant issues that completely marred our visit. On the positive side, the food and cocktails at Proof on Main were fantastic. The staff at the restaurant as well as the the friendly doormen, contributed positively to our stay. We also appreciated the art gallery, a highlight from our previous visit, which once again added a unique touch to our experience. Without these positives, this would have been a one-star review. Our room was clean and spacious with a comfortable bed, meeting our expectations. However, upon checking in, we discovered that the perks we were entitled to through our booking with a travel advisor, such as breakfast, property credit, and room upgrade, were not initially applied. The front desk eventually resolved these issues by providing breakfast vouchers and confirming our upgrade, though the lack of initial acknowledgment was disconcerting. Additionally, when we checked out, the property credit was not applied which added our frustration after the experiencing the peculiar situation below. Unfortunately, a troubling incident involving my missing purse from our hotel room overshadowed our stay. Despite our assurances that it was likely taken by accident with the linens, the hotel's handling of the situation was extremely poor. We spent considerable time dealing with the front desk, cancelling credit cards, and worrying about the lost purse, which significantly affected our trip. Although the purse was eventually returned, the staff's reluctance to take responsibility and the persistent issues with our booking perks left us with a negative impression of the 21c Hotel brand. Over a week later, I still have not received a response from management about our experience.

Yelp
First time here I stayed on a Sunday night. Everyone from the valet, front desk, and wait staff at the restaurant were so amazing and went above and beyond for a great experience. I was traveling for work and wanted to stay somewhere within walking distance to a restaurant and the Louisville Slugger Museum. I made a reservation for the restaurant, Proof on Main, that is located in the hotel. Old Fashions here are so delicious and I've never had such a good one that was this memorable. I started with a little bite, Amuse Bouche to get my appetite going. Since I was dining alone I wanted to try a little salad and pasta. This pasta was so fresh and chewy. And it was the perfect amount of food.

Yelp
What is this place? A. Hotel ? B. Art museum? C. Both A and B? D. Neither A nor B? (Answer Below) This is one of the most unique hotels I've ever stayed at. Our room was spacious and well appointed. The beds and bedding were insanely comfortable. The décor reflects the artistic theme of the establishment. The bath and shower brought back psychedelic memories from my youth when the UV nightlight was turned on. Penguins are ubiquitous. The three foot tall, injection molded penguin on our floor was constantly on the move, up and down the hallways and frequently stopping in front of a room--no doubt thanks to the occupants' colleagues or traveling companions. Valet parking and bell service when you arrive makes this downtown location easy and convenient for guests arriving after a long drive from out of state. It's easy to find too--just look for the giant gold replica of Michelangelo's "David." And then there are the galleries--filled with interesting art--mostly if not all contemporary--many by BIPOC or LGBTQ artists. I thoroughly enjoyed strolling around taking in the art. Some pieces seem to be part of a collection, others are part of curated displays. Check their website for more information about the works on display when you are in Louisville. Art lovers can visit the galleries even if you aren't staying at the hotel, or if you dine at the restaurant. The attached restaurant, Proof on Main (reviewed separately) provides guests with high quality food and drink for breakfast, lunch or dinner--everything thing guests might need, all under one roof. On top of all that, there are famous distilleries, specialty museums, shopping, restaurants and nightlife, all within easy walking distance. Price wise this is an upper tier hotel, but well worth it. It was definitely one of the lodging highlights of my annual trip with my college friend. And the answer is, of course: C. Both A and B.

Tim N.

Yelp
The hotel was nice. Had everything we needed and was conveniently located in Louisville. If you are an "open minded" "art" enthusiast you might like it. Being a loyal patriot, I didn't appreciate the wall-sized photo of an upside-down American Flag. This is not how a flag should be displayed. This is not art. It is disrespectful and disgusting, especially seeing it on Veterans Day. Calling this art only because it's controversial and offensive is lazy. Shame on this hotel for allowing this to be displayed and shame on this artists imitator for passing this off as art.

Yelp
There's nothing more unique than having a two-story art gallery within a hotel you're staying. The gallery is open 24 hours a day and is open to the public. The hotel offers a bar and restaurant as well both of which are amazing. We had a deluxe king room, which was cozy and comfortable. It was also very clean. The only thoughts I have about the room that are negative is that the bathroom was on the smaller side. Reception was unremarkable and nothing to write home about but it was very easy regardless. What a great experience.

Yelp
If anyone were to ask about my trip to Louisville, yes yes, of course my friend's wedding was beautiful! And yep, we had a lovely stay, and yes the stores, tastings, and people of Louisville are wonderful. Yes but. Actually, Yes, AND... the art museum at 21C is AMAZING. An art museum, tucked into a hotel, okay, weird. But yet, the collection we saw was one of the most stunning and thought provoking ones I've seen in a long time - and we came in from a wealth of spoils in New York where artwork can be found anywhere you look, let alone in some of top most well-known museums in the world. STILL, I can't help thinking about how amazingly thoughtful the collection was at this museum slash hotel slash restaurant. Truly, kudos to the curators and come bring your skills to NYC. What an amazing opportunity for us to experience art in Kentucky. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Stayed here 10 years ago thought it was good but went downhill and won't stay here again because unlike most hotels you have to refill your water bottle by walking the entire floor from the room I was in. What other hotel that charges as much is so cheap that they don't provide water bottles that you have to refill??? Crazy nuts. Then housekeeping left the dirty linen on my floor after they cleaned my room. So who wants to come back to a room that's been cleaned but the staff left the dirty linen on your floor?? The front desk supervisor did offer two free drinks and to send up a full water bottle after I complained but really not what you would expect from this price hotel. Is the whole chain this bad or only Louisville??

Yelp
Everything was wonderful! Location, decor, food, a grand slam of a stay. I will definitely recommend 21c Museum and Hotel to all my Louisville bound friends. Thank you.

Yelp
Very cool place to stay! Right downtown and about 15-20 mins from Churchill Downs. Great vibe inside and in the room with amenities to match all needs. Having the museum to walk around was a definite plus!

Yelp
First time here -- came for basketball and decided to splurge -- and was not disappointed. Rooms are spacious and well-appointed (although I am frustrated by Nespresso machines -- too much work to get enough coffee -- but that's my own peculiarity). Service was polite and professional and generally outstanding (and wonderfully kind of funky set of employees in a very good way), and the art throughout the lobby and elsewhere in the hotel was plentiful and interesting (if sometimes a little off beat and even disturbing...but that's what art is supposed to be). Loved the portable large red penguin sculptures that made surprise appearances in various places in the hotel -- presume it's a combination of the staff enjoying the theme of the hotel and guests having some fun with moveable art. The bar is fabulous with tremendously knowledgable bartenders who made great recommendations on flights of bourbon...which most definitely sang me to my rest! Can't wait to try another 21c in another city.

Yelp
21c continues to offer thought provoking art installations, unique hotel experiences and a good place to hang for a bite cocktail or two. I've never encountered a rude employee or one not willing to assist. So grab a cocktail at Proof and walk around the galleries. Look up in the elevator and book the cyclone room. You won't regret it!
google avatar

Yelp
The rooms are absolutely perfect here. Spacious, clean, modern and plenty of room to make yourself at home. Appreciated the corner table and seating. Bathroom had a very cool black light feature and a huge shower. The entire hotel is also filled with unique works of modern art. Parking is valet for $32/day or $9/day in a garage right behind the hotel. The bar staff in the onsite restaurant, Proof, makes a proper cocktail. They have a small fitness room, a steam room and a sauna.

Yelp
Went for lunch on 6/29/24. Bartenders were horrible. Terribly understaffed. Everyone was frazzled. Left after 1 drink each and went across to mussel n burger bar.

Yelp
We are staying at 21C in Louisville as I type. I gave the hotel 2 stars despite the rooms being okay and the restaurant being good. What really was upsetting was the lobby artwork which included a menorah made out of guns (anti semitic) and other artwork projecting one person's unhappiness on others. We really felt unwelcome. We will never stay in another 21C. If 21C hates America so much they might consider setting up shop in Iran.

Yelp
I loved coming to visit this museum and this super cute and chic bar is a nice touch! I definitely need to check more of the art scene when I return. I was visiting my sister for the weekend and we had an action filled night. Definitely some very unique art pieces here and I would say this makes for a great date night. Walk around, take it all in and then sit at the bar to discuss your faves or not so faves. Oh yeah don't forget, you can look but you can't touch. Be courteous and help to preserve these original pieces.

Yelp
Absolute trash!!! Booked a room with 2 beds and arrived to be given some basement wanna be cabin in the woods trash with one bed. It's me and my daughter they said they upgraded me? And gave me a roll away bed! HTF is that an upgrade? It's me and my daughter and I drove 6 hrs to sleep in a nasty ass roll away bed because they sold out of rooms with 2 beds that I reserved . Trifling 100 % never again!

Yelp
A dead on 4 star experience. Loved the hotel as a gallery (absolutely 5 stars), Rooms themselves were decent (3 stars), Location is convenient but really dead in the evening (4 stars). Art -- The exhibitions here are extremely engaging, curated magnificently well. They allowed some political satire but kept it clean. Anything and everything was used as a canvas, including the smoke stacks from the building. There are plastic penguins you'll see articulated throughout the hotel, its really a fun gallery! Room Pro's -- 5 star bedding, super nice sheets & a few different pillow types. 5 star products (malin and goetz). 5 start architecture, great repurposing. Amazing do not disturb door hanger. Room Con's -- Dated TV + remote was not in a covid bag. Loved the Nespresso machine with 6 good pods but hated the damn coffee mate (Hotel lobby coffee was also complemented by coffee mate). The shower curtain hung higher than the tub itself so water got all over the floor (room 406). Was not a fan of the carpet. Pro-Tip: If you're willing to roll the dice, plenty of STREET PARKING right along the hotel on Saturday nights. I didn't have to leave the curb from my car to the lobby

Yelp
Wow what a great discovery. We had no idea this place existed but learned of the museum portion via geocaching. We wandered around the free galleries of this hotel / museum for quite a while. The exhibits were fascinating especially the puffing mushrooms. Of course the highlight for all is the men's room on the main floor. Don't miss it! Loved the penguins and the art car outside...
google avatar

Yelp
Hotel was unique. It's close to everything so you can walk around downtown. It was exceptionally clean and got coupons for night caps at their bar upon check in. Don't be surprised when you open your door and find a big red penguin at your door!

Yelp
A Gem in downtown Louisville that does not disappoint. If you haven't heard of 21C, you're in for a treat - a concept hotel that offers a very unique and immersive experience centered around contemporary art for hotel guests And to the public. The art gallery is free and offers a rotating art collection. Check online for the free guided tour times and dates. You don't want to miss the famed voyeuristic bathroom. Just go. Highly recommended.

Yelp
21c Museum is an awesome spot in Louisville! The museum is free and open 24/7! The art exhibits changed frequently enough to visit multiple times a year! I also try and visit other 21c museums when traveling and are always a cool experience. I also have celebrated NYE at 21c in Louisville and it was a great time would recommend it to anyone!

David R.

Yelp
I travel a lot to many cities always looking for something unique and special. When your assessment is motivated by how you related to the experience when it touched your emotions is a positive way, then I give the venue top billing. Go there to just walk through the visual interplay to become soothed or shocked or sensualized. Each presentation will grip you in a different way. Just go

Yelp
Yet another good stay in 21C Museum Hotel.. Really good 1 night stay on business. Not surprising, considering my other 21C stays (Nashville, Chicago, KS, Raleigh). Well located, thought provoking art installations were expected, a given, as I would say. Service was cheerful and friendly. Nice and cool restaurant and bar Proof on Main with very decent breakfast, good meal in the bar, and trendy cocktails and wines. Heavy on Bourbon, as expected. Rooms were clean and spacious with plenty of amenities. Appreciated Accor Platinum upgrade too. All in all quite a good stay, perhaps without a wow factor, but no complaints! Would stay again.

Liza W.

Yelp
The location is perfect. It was nice to be able to walk to so many options for dinner or the Louisville Slugger Museum. The parking garage nearby is inexpensive (valet is pricey, just park yourself). Rooms are average, but the soaps are divine.

Yelp
The art is definitely worth a visit. Had a lovely class of moscato in the bar with girlfriends.

Yelp
This review is only for the art museum portion, as I did not stay here but ventured over to see the art. Nothing beats a free museum filled with some really nice pieces of work. There are various rooms and downstairs with art all over. Every nook and niche is filled with some art to explore! Even a small ATM room had two pictures hanging and the conference room had some really eye-catching pieces and not all were in picture frames! There was a set of bowls that were painted with various subjects. You can see the penguin logo of 21C Museum/Hotel throughout! Such as a door complete with red penguin logos spread out! The art exhibits are not always the same but I enjoyed what was currently on display! If you didn't get enough, you can bring home some for later! The hotel has a store where you can get a wooden red penguin for $40! Check out the penguins sitting all over the facade if the museum and Michelangelo's David! David is part of the hotel and can be seen loitering outside on Main Street in full gold glory.

Yelp
My primary experience with 21C is as a local that visits the artwork and exhibits, sometimes a special event. It's on the list of places I tell visitors to stop in as they enjoy downtown Louisville, especially because it's a unique, free spot - and who doesn't want to see a massive gold statue of David? 21C features newer artists (still living!) and passes artwork amongst their hotels, from city to city, which gives you a reason to keep coming back. Several artists are featured at once so when visiting the different galleries you get a completely new perspective. Make sure to check out the smoke rings outside the window, the falling letters that form around your body, the bathrooms and its well known bar, Proof. You can take your drink with you as you wander the building. 21C also offers a restaurant and rooms with its famous penguin. I've been told each city has a different color, Louisville being red. Make sure to check out other reviews about dinners and rooms. They come with a high price tag but may be worth the splurge.

Yelp
Super cool free museum to explore. It has two levels of art and installation pieces, several of which were made specifically for the space. Definitely a must-see for art lovers. I think we spent about an hour looking around, maybe a little longer but we didn't read everything so maybe give it 1.5-2 hours if you might want to read all the materials.

Yelp
Nice clean hotel right in the heart of downtown. Close to the river walking park with great art and a very nice bar and restaurant. Hotel includes gym with Peloton and sauna. Will be back!

Yelp
21c Museum Hotel Louisville is a great hotel in downtown Louisville. It is walking distance from many great spots in the city including the Muhammad Ali Center, Louisville Slugger Museum, and the downtown bourbon distilleries. The hotel room is an art experience itself with the trendy décor. I enjoyed the stay and walked through the art museum on the first and basement floors of the hotel. It is a unique hotel that I was glad to have stayed in. The gold David statue in the front and the bejeweled limo make the place quite recognizable. One of the front staff members was a little belittling when she spoke to guests but she isn't going to deter my 5-star rating. I will stay here again. Come check it out.

Yelp
We had stayed previously at the 21c in Cincinnati a few years back and having a good stay there, we figured this would be a safe choice for our one nighter in Louisville. All in all, we couldn't be happier with our choice to stay here. The hotel is just as clean as the one in Cincinnati. And also similar, this one has a free museum throughout that's open to public. Cool! I did appreciate that the fact that since the premises is open to the public, the elevator access to get up to the rooms is room key controlled to ensure no strangers can just wander around the hallways where the rooms are located. Another reason we decided to stay at 21c is that they are dog friendly. No need to shack up the puppers at a doggie hotel, but you can just bring them along with ya! Staff was super accommodating and welcoming to us and the pups during our stay. And gave us a door sign to indicate to housekeeping that the pups were in the room in case they needed to service the room. Location is pretty nice as well. Walking distance to a handful of distilleries, plenty of bars & restaurants, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the performing arts center, and even the KFC sports arena home of University of Louisville basketball. We were a bit worried that being close in proximity that the area would be a bit rowdy, but for the Saturday night we were they it was relatively tame as many of the distilleries do close relatively early in the evening. No issues with noise or falling asleep. Parking they do offer a valet service or a parking garage right next door. We utilized the parking garage and upon exit the next day, gate was permanently lifted and no one on duty. So I guess parking was free? Not complaining. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay here and in Louisville in general. Definitely looking forward to another visit soon! 'Til next time, cheers!

Yelp
I recently stayed at the 21C Louisville location and was completely turned off by what I considered an anti-America "art" display. The hotel itself is nice, great food and a really great attached bar. However, the display of completely distasteful anti-America themed "art" made me want to never stay at the hotel again. Even several of the hotel staff commented that the display "missed the mark"

Yelp
I like the hotel but, it has been 30 hours since checkout and a $100 hold is still on my ATM.

Yelp
Just an update for the 21 C hotel and museum. They hosted a Vision and Voice poetry reading last week and a friend of mine was one of the readers. It was such a classy event. We were in one of the galleries small art rooms for the readings. At the beginning of the event Ms. Gillenwater, a 21 C museum gave us a short tour of the museum, specifically discussing 5 of the pieces displayed that are by KY artist. Once back in the reading room there were 6 local writers who read from their orginial writings, some poetry others chapters of new books they have just finished. They were all creative and fun. The hotel provided snacks and water, had chairs set up and were so hospitable. I have loved the hotel museum since it opened years ago and am always excited to see the new art that surfaces periodically in their galleries. Love the art, the atmosphere and the attached resturant/bar, Proof. Great assest to downtown Louisville.

Yelp
You know I was really hoping that this would be a great place to stay but slowly finding out it's NOT! front desk people were excellent, so is the Bellman our room is very nice but can't use the balcony because it's infested with some sort of a bug, I guess that's not their fault, but what a waste!!! The restaurant and bar we paid for an upgraded bourbon experience... Don't buy it!!!!! Bar Proof on Main didn't even know what it was and when I finally figured out what it was you get 3 1/2 ounce taste of whiskey from their "exclusive" list you could've bought yourself and saved more than half the money!!! The room service doesn't answer the phone. The coffee machine in the room doesn't work, when I called to ask about how to use the television I was yelled at because supposedly I should have known the Internet was down. I called to see if I just wasn't using it correctly and when I told her I was sorry I just wasn't sure I was using their menu correctly. She then apologized for being hateful! Two nights for almost $850 I guarantee you I'd stay at best Western next time or the Marriott down the street.!!!!

Yelp
This hotel was such a treat to stay at! I love that there is a museum on site that you can walk freely, no cost of admission. Our room was 430 and the bed was fantastic. I loved their coffee machine and that they also had half and half available. The fridge is stocked with their minibar and if you move things around, the sensor will assume you are imbibing and will charge you. So don't use the fridge but instead call the front desk if you need something to hold your food or drinks in and they will bring another fridge for you to use during your stay. So many cool things about this hotel. The restaurant on site, Proof on Main, is very hip with its decor and vibe. We opted to pay for valet which cost $32 because if you self park, you would need to pay for parking every time you left so valet was the clear winner. The employees were all so great. The front desk staff to the restaurant staff, I definitely felt like I was treated very well. I want to visit all the other hotel locations in the country, such a cool and novel idea!

Yelp
I've been here so many times but I guess I've never written a review. It's cool that 21c started here! They have locations in Lexington, cincy, and I think Nashville. The Lexington one is less impressive, though I hope to check out all of their locations. It's cool to see art here for free. It's all modern art and very thought-provoking. They showcase a lot of minority artists and make you think about political and social issues. It's bigger than I thought as you can view stuff on two different floors and in multiple rooms. I see some of the same stuff sometimes, but most of it changes. Make sure you check out the black things that pump out rings of smoke. You can view it outside, on the first floor, and the second floor. In addition, there are two rooms that sometimes aren't open for viewing. When I went the most recent time, you could view more pictures. They are in the hallway over by the bathrooms, I believe. When I went, it was mostly photography. Very cool though as one rooms displayed photographs that one of the co founders of 21c took! I never tire of coming here over and over!

Yelp
Not overly impressed with hotel in comparison to the 21C in Lexington. Staff were friendly and followed Covid protocols. Provided requests in a timely fashion (extra towels and coffee). The space was not what I anticipated in regards to the art. Lots of open space in galleries. Bar/restaurant that was attached was not what we expected so we dined across the street. Tried to go later for drinks but they close super early for a bar on a Saturday night. Room was nice but for 4 people and 2 full sized beds, it was not ideal. Good thing my bestie and I were used to being in the same bed since our teens. Queens would have been preferred. Room also got very cold throughout the night. Parking on street or garage.

Yelp
This is an upscale hotel. Modern in design and service concepts. Rooms are spacious and elegant. Professional hotel service to the top degree Owners have a personal art collection that they share with the world through a gallery in the hotel. Anyone can come see the collection, which rotates throughout the year, for free. Even better...you can get a signature crafted cocktail in the bar and sip it while enjoying the art. Event space is also available. Highly recommend a visit or even better, book a room.

Yelp
Expected more. We checked in late and the restaurant was closed and room service wasn't available. Room was nice and comfortable, but very dark with no outside light. There was tons of quirky stuff everywhere. Pictures, still art, antique furniture, very suggestive and not so subtle photographs of nudity and sexual acts. I guess, idk what to think of it all other than it's just too much. It's expensive and doesn't include parking, has a so so restaurant, so definitely not a place I would return to.

Yelp
While entertaining my granddaughters on vacation, I wanted to swing by this museum/hotel so that the kids would have a chance to see artwork that might challenge their young perceptions about what it means to be an artist. One likes to paint. One likes to doodle. So to see them respond to sculpture and mixed media installations was interesting. We didn't stay at the hotel, so I can't comment on how nice our stay may have been, but I applaud that a hotel embraces the arts and offers something original for its visitors to see. There are a couple floors with several rooms that have contemporary artwork of many styles. Note: be sure to check out the Cloud Machines by Ned Kahn on the exterior (east side) of the building. It is fun to watch! Review #3280

Yelp
We've stayed at 21C Louisville five times over the past 7 years. It's always been great. This year they are claiming the COVID exemption as far as service goes. Rooms get cleaned once every 3 days (been here since Wednesday and it's now Saturday). I was assured our room would be cleaned today. Left before 9AM and returned at 4PM. No such luck. Had to beg the front desk to empty the trash and give us new towers. Really? Bar and restaurant are operating on very reduced hours. This is a premium priced hotel ($250+ a night and $32 per night valet). Same price as prior years when they had their act together. 1/3 the service and same price - doesn't seem like a value proposition that's sustainable to me. I totally get it there is a pandemic. I've stayed in 5 other hotels since June 2021 (it's late August 21). All had altered their service levels. But this is by far the worst experience and its unacceptable.

Yelp
Museum area is much larger than the 21C in Cincinnati. And beautifully done. Part of the art was mirrored glass on the end of the bathroom walls. You can see out, but others can't see in. Just a small one on ladies room. Full wall on mens. We figured it our when women wer ane standing right at the mirror trying to freak their men out. We giggled cause I think it would be uncomfortable if you actually there inside watching yourself being watched (even though you can't see in) It's a fun place to visit and thee's even a small gift shop. The Cracking Art Penquins are red here, as opposed to yellow in Cincinnati. I adore those penquins.

Yelp
Drinks: I had a bourbon and ginger beer cocktail and it was so yummy. They did have a few other unique drinks to try out. Everyone at the table enjoyed their drinks. Food: I tried the fried sweet potatoes. They were sooo amazing. They were sort of charred so they had a nice crunch, topped in green onion sauce and paired with a yummy creamy sauce. LOVED IT. Their French fries were also so perfectly soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. I just had a few snacks since I had eaten before we went Service: the waiter was very kind and attentive. It did take a very very long time to get drinks and food. It was a friends birthday so they gave us adorable house made cotton candy! COVID-19 friendly: everyone was required to wear masks until food had been ordered. Hand washing station at the front. Our table was in its very own section, at least 6 tables away from all other patrons. Masks were strictly enforced when using the restroom or going to the museum. I felt extremely safe there. Art: the art was very interesting and diverse. We really enjoyed exploring the many different and unique art pieces after dinner.

Yelp
One more Free thing to do in Louisville Downtown. This place is basically a hotel with contemporary art museum. 21c Museum is North America's only museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting contemporary art of the 21st century. The museum is open free of charge 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Just look up when you arrive, and you'll notice this ethos right away there, towering over 7th and Main street, is a double-size replica of David (inspired by Michelangelo) Pros: --------- Free Attractions In Downtown Close to lot attractions Street parking and own parking for the hotel Places of Interest Nearby: --------------------------- Kentucky Art and Craft Gallery 0 miles Louisville Science Center 0 miles Louisville Slugger Museum Factory 0.1 miles Frazier International History Museum 0.1 miles Muhammad Ali Center 0.1 miles Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts 0.1 miles KFC Yum! Yelp
The big chains could learn a thing or two from this hotel - great rooms with all the right amenities, great service, daily housekeeping, fantastic restaurant, and visually stimulating. I highly recommend this very eclectic but fabulous hotel.

Yelp
Stayed at the 21c for the weekend. We had a great experience there. In the era of COVID-19 they are very safe and clean. No worries. Staff is top notch and personable and excellent. Special shout out to the desk staff, bartender for making special drinks for us, and the valet for running everywhere. The room is very well appointed and comfortable. We had two issues and both were handled. The TV was off and wasn't getting reception they fixed that. And the drain in the shower was in need of cleaning because it filled up fast. Both fixed. The art is very cool and unique. It was fun seeing it. We had a drink at the bar but did not eat. So I can only say the bar was a good experience. Bartenders are very good and personable. I would definitely stay there again.
