Gastro Obscura's Top 20 Places to Eat and Drink

"The highest praise a cook can receive is that their meal “tastes just like grandma’s.” Enoteca Maria takes this concept to the next level—not because it employs professionally trained master chefs, but because a different grandmother heads the kitchen every night.  The project came about after owner Joe Scaravella lost his mother in the early 2000s. When he opened Enoteca Maria two years later, Scaravella staffed his kitchen with Italian grandmothers (“nonnas”) to create a feeling of homey comfort in his restaurant. In July of 2015, Scaravella invited a Pakistani nonna to cook for a night. From there, the program expanded into “Nonnas of the World,” and he invited nonnas from all backgrounds to create a second, constantly-changing menu to supplement the restaurant’s specialty of Italian fare.  Although some of the nonnas hail from Staten Island, most come from Brooklyn. Others travel from New Jersey and the Bronx to share their family’s culinary history. Their food comes from all over the world though. To date, Nonnas of the World has featured cooks from Japan, Syria, France, Bangladesh, Venezuela, Poland, Greece, Turkey, Liberia, Kazakhstan, the Dominican Republic, Czechia, Belarus, Pakistan, and of course, Italy, just to name a few. Two nonnas work in the kitchen at any given time, one as the head chef, the other as her sous chef. This means a South American nonna and a Middle Eastern nonna could be working side by side in the kitchen, learning from each other’s recipes. Cooking classes are offered as well—for women only, many of whom are grandmothers themselves—and get booked months in advance. It’s another opportunity for cross-cultural recipe sharing, as well as a chance to eat food made with love." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Yelp
This is a great restaurant with a super unique concept. In addition to the regular Italian and Japanese menus, there is a rotating feature menu. And all the food, made by "real nonnas," has a homey feel to it. The plates are large and designed to be shared. On the night I visited, the featured grandma was from Sri Lanka. There were three dishes from that menu. We also ordered one dish from the Italian menu and one from the Japanese menu. Hoppers with chicken coconut curry - I didn't try the curry, but rhe hoppers (like a dosa) were nice and light. Potato cutlets - just like an aloo tikki, crispy on the outside with subtle spices on the inside. Noodles - the rice vermicelli at room temperature was served alongside a lentil curry that is a bit more like yellow dal. There were also some pineapple and potato dishes on the side. This was my favorite of the three feature items. Spinach lasagna - super rich from all the layers, a good amount of cheese and spinach, and a comforting sauce. I'm rarely impressed by Italian food but this was incredible. Eggplant dengaku - seemed more like a Mediterranean dish than a Japanese one, but still great. The grilled eggplant was served alongside a salad kind of like tabbouleh, a vegetable dip, and Japanese style cucumbers. All of this came to about $145 before tax and tip. The restaurant is cash only.

Yelp
Enoteca Maria has been on my list to try for a while. It recently earned its Michelin status on Staten Island. All food is prepared by local grandmothers. So you get an international flavor from all over world. During our dinning experience, the Italian grandma talked to us and gave us hugs. It was a lovely experience. Service was great as well. So I see the appeal for a unique experience. I finally gotten an excuse to come here because a friend of ours is moving across the country to San Francisco saw this place on a video (so did we). He was excited to visit the restaurant before he leaves for good that he didn't even eat lunch at work. He ended up with a full belly afterwards. To sum it up, the food was great! We ordered four different dishes, each from a different country. A Turkish chicken dish, Italian Bolognese, Japanese chicken skewer and another chicken stew dish I forgot which country it was from. Oops lol but we had three different styles of salads, it was very fun. I definitely felt like the flavors were fooling around with my palettes in my mouth. My personal favorite dish was the Japanese skewers. It was a really well balanced meal with carbs, meats and greens. It was quiet busy on a Friday night. I loved the super hero figurines and the hanging decorations. It's not what you would expect of a restaurant where food is prepared from grandmas. Overall, I would come back another time to try a different menu (as their menus change).

Yelp
Tried making a reservation, and the guy that answered the phone couldn't be more uninterested in helping me. I usually prefer booking online, but their website writes "Please call for reservations." So I did. I kid you not - these were the words that came out of his mouth: "Can I help you with something?" Obviously, that's why I called. "If you wanna make a reservation, call me back tomorrow. I'm in the middle of service here." Then he immediately hangs up the phone. Cool concept but keep the nasty attitude to yourself.

Yelp
The service was super friendly, and we were able to get dinner reservations by calling ahead in the morning. It was so nice to meet Nonna Maria, who was going around to greet and check in on each of the tables while two other grandmothers took charge of the kitchen. The dining room is intimate, and we were graced by the presence of a birthday at a neighboring table, which was fun. (They played a song over the speakers instead of prompting singing.) The decor is a mix of superhero stuff, family pictures, etc., but the ambiance is really created by the grandmothers, staff, and other diners. Just has a warm feel to it, and the food was very good. They gave us a plate of focaccia and pickled peppers to start, which was yummy, then my boyfriend and I both went for the pasta with Sunday sauce, which came with one meatball and two sausages. The sausages were nice, but the meatball was the star. Of course, because they have a rotating schedule of grandmothers cooking and varying menus, you're just going to have to go in and see for yourself, but we had a great time overall and would love to go again. They are cash only, so be sure to make a res and hit the ATM.

Yelp
An EXPERIENCE!!!!! Amazing customer service and any food item is worth ordering. The fact that International nonnas are making authentic food from all over the world is the best part of your dine in express. It is cash only but if you're there at the right hour you can meet the sweetest nonnas come out and get a warm hug and smile. I will recommend this place to anyone and everyone!

Yelp
My boyfriend surprised me with a date night here and it was amazing. We took the Staten Island ferry over which was a fun little excursion in itself. This restaurant brings in grandmas from around the world to cook authentic meals. The night we went there was an Italian, Japanese, and Turkish grandma. The Italian grandma is always there and the lasagna is her signature dish. We got an Italian entree, Turkish appetizer, and a Japanese entree. The serving sizes were large and everything was delicious. We met the Italian grandma and she was super sweet. It was a great place to go to feel at home.

Yelp
What an awesome a novel concept. Food is fresh, home-cooked and if you have the absolute honor and privilege to meet Nonna Maria, you're in for an even bigger treat. Nothing but good health and happiness to 120 Nonna!

Yelp
My feeling is that some of the 1star reviews here are just miserable people who will never be satisfied. "Expensive" is personal, we had dinner for 3 $240 with tax ate a TON of food and had some to go. Everything I had was delicious, the environment was warm and welcoming, so for me in New York City, this is cheap. People saying the tables are small bla bla, read the room, know what to expect when you come somewhere like this. It's supposed to be cozy warm and feel like you are with family and it is EXACTLY that. I would never think to come to Staten Island to eat but I will definitely be back. We left full and with a wholesome feeling.

Yelp
Cute restaurant with the chefs all grandmas! Easy to get here / just hop on the staton island ferry which was free and this was a five minute walk from the station. We met the Italian nona and she was so kind. She kept coming by to fill our water and talk with us. We had the beet and strawberry salad (Italian), the onagiri (Japanese) and the chicken and rice (Egyptian). I would say the salad was excellent the other dishes were 3.5/5. But service was super friendly and on point 5/5 and I love supporting local places like this one. Definitely go if youre looking for something unique!

Yelp
Finally made it to Enoteca Maria which was on my list for quite some time.! They have a regular menu and a guest Nonna, open Fri Sat Sun. I made the reservation for two about 3 weeks in advance, the initial date I wanted of a Saturday was sold out for the 530 seating. My second choice, Friday at 530 was available. It was 101 degrees that Friday and I will say by the time I got to the restaurant I was not as hungry as I wanted to be. I will be going back in cooler months for sure. My dining partner and I both chose lasagna she chose red I chose white. We shared. The red sauce is out of this world. I was tempted to ask if they sold it by the jar. The white lasagna was not as heavy as it appears and CHOCK FULL OF ARTICHOKE. I hope you like artichoke. Nonna Maria was absolutely a darling. I did not care for the ganache cake. Next time I will get the banana pudding. The Guest Nonna menu on this day had a Turkish selection and a Japanese, both featuring a feta appetizer and an eggplant main course. Unfortunately I am not a fan of eggplant or feta. We were seated at the front and my back was to the restaurant but it seemed to go back a bit with a bar on the side. I will be back for the meatballs and I'm curious if the menu is rotating because on Google it is large and extensive but I saw a small selection to choose from when we were there.

Yelp
ENOTECA MARIA Noonas of the world In a narrow little building with a tiny Noona number 1, a familial staff and great sound track let the food transport you back to your granny's apron. A brilliant concept: let Noonas from around the world cook and they will come. We ate dumplings from Noona Ukrane, nigiri from Noona Japan and sea-bass from Noona Italy. Finally Eli, our server, brought banana pudding and crepes with chocolate chip and ricotta. My friend also ordered gluten free white chocolate cheesecake....lost me at gluten free but he loved it. A new friend at nearby table celebrated his birthday. The bartender cranked the Beatles birthday song and it was wonderful as the entire crown sang to him. Bucket list restaurant for sure.

Yelp
CASH ONLY (or Venmo!) I love the concept of Enoteca Maria, so I feel slightly guilty for the 3-star rating, but 3-stars means it was alright! I'm obsessed with hole-in-the-wall restaurants where the food tastes like your grandma made it. When my friend told me about Enoteca Maria, I decided I had a reason to go to Staten Island. It is conveniently located near the ferry, so it is definitely worth a visit! I called two weeks ahead to get a 2:30pm seating on a Sunday. They are closed in the beginning of the week so plan ahead if you want to make a reservation. The interior is no-frills, which makes sense for the concept! We had a nonna from Italy and one from Japan working the day we went, though did not see the nonna from Japan. I ordered the risotto ($18) and my friend had eggplant dengaku ($25). The highlight of the risotto was the sausage, which had nice flavor. Otherwise, the risotto did not have much flavor. My friend's dish tasted like a steak meal with an eggplant substitution. The sauce was delicious, and the eggplant texture was nice. The whipped potatoes were pretty cool and complemented the dish nicely. We had a bread pudding for dessert ($14) that was also decent. I was missing more texture from wafers, but the vanilla pudding was good. Service was alright. The waiter who helped us was courteous, and we didn't need a water refill. I was just personally not wowed by the food. If I do end up coming back with someone else who wants to try it, and I have an outstanding dish, I will update my review accordingly. That being said, I do think this is an experience every New Yorker should try at least once!

Yelp
My friend told me about the concept of the place - inviting nonnas to be guest chefs, which I thought was a great idea and I've seen in Taipei too. The day we went was an Italian nonna so we got delicious "home-cooked" meal. The place is a short walk from the ferry so pretty easy to get to, and good for tourists as a way to see the statue also.

Yelp
My mother in law saw this place on The Today Show. It was so sweet to see the lovely grandma's in the restaurant, walking around, welcoming everyone with a heartwarming smile, or a hug. The Nonnas were humble, and seemed genuinely grateful for us to be there and try their home-cooked meals. We were able to try dishes from Italy, Japan, and Argentina. You could tell them were made with love. I felt like a part of the family when we left.

Yelp
During my eploration of Staten Island I was intrigued by the concept of nonnas of different nationalities sharing cultures through food. Enoteca felt like a big family kitchen. My Nonna for the day offered three Mexican choices. However, I ordered lasagna from the traditional menu along with the harvest salad. The salad was hearty and the lasagna was comforting. I finished with banana pudding which was a nice variation on the traditional southern dessert. At the end of my meal I was greeted by kindest 90 year old nonna with the warmth that definitely made the visit worth it.

Yelp
Enoteca Maria / Nonnas of the World was the restaurant you wanted to be on a very cold evening , the food was beyond good and the service and family feel ambiance was warm for the soul The concept of having different grandmas cook is great. The burrata cheese and meatballs were so delicious. The concept is great and the staff so friendly. Highly recommend. We had pasta and fish. All food great A definite repeat

Yelp
Enoteca Maria represents all that is good in NYC and the world. When people live in NYC or are visiting from out of town, I always encourage them to meet the unique people who bring magic to this city before it is too late. I think of all the iconic people I have had the privilege of being in the presence of in this amazing city: whether it was Dom DeMarco sling pies on Avenue J, getting a late night soft serve from Ray Alvarez in the East Village, listening to jazz in Marjorie Eliot's apartment. And now I get to add a warm hug from Nonna Maria to this illustrious list. Somehow this place has blown up on social media. The concept is simple - each night a grandmother from around the world serves up a tasty meal from their home country. Nonna Maria's home cooked Italian food is always on the menu, while the rest rotates. When we were there, we sat next a couple from Germany who came all the way to Staten Island because they saw this restaurant on the news! 5 stars because of how warm and genuine Nonna Maria is - what an absolute delight and joy. You can tell hospitality is in her blood, and will make everyone who steps through the door feel like they are family. You will need to make reservations, as they fill up pretty quickly. There is just a certain energy and kinship when you step through the doors, because everyone is so happy to be there. Food and wine was delicious, with great portions at very reasonable prices. Everyone needs to add this place to their NYC bucket list!

Yelp
Best empanadas I've never had, thanks argentinian nonna! It was crisp and not oily, and the filling was filled with a delicious spiced beef. The focaccia and pickled veg on the side was also phenomenal - I wish they sold it in jars. What an experience and surprised - with all the variety in cuisines and quality of food they bring in it's easy recco!

Yelp
We all give Staten Island a hard time about not actually being a borough. And for the average New Yorker or tourist, there isn't much to the place besides a fun, free ferry ride. But somehow I dig deep enough into the internet to find Enoteca Maria, or Nonnas of the world, a wonderful little treasure located in the snubbed borough. Nonnas of the world is the brain child of owner Joe Scaravella, who actually works at the restaurant. One of the OG nonnas, Maria Gialanella, walks around the restaurant giving you the softest, warmest grandma hugs and telling you stories of her native Italy in beautiful broken English. While the concept started out strictly as Italian nonnas, grandmothers from all over the world serve up comfort food, using recipes handed down through their families. The night we came, we had Haitian ratatouille by nonna Kay, as well as a bento box by the Japanese nonna. We also had meatballs from the original Italian menu. The meal is preceded by this wicked tasty focaccia bread with pickled veggies. Of note: the menu and the nonna who is cooking rotates and can usually be found on their website. Sometimes the schedule changes unexpectedly. There is always an Italian menu available regardless of the starting nonna. Countries I saw just browsing the site include Sri Lanka, Peru, Trinidad, Bangladesh, Puerto Rico, Turkey, and more. The restaurant is small. Acoustics are terrible, but what are ya gonna do? Reservations highly recommended. Call the number on the site. I'm pretty sure the owner took my reservation and said, "see ya then, sweetheart," which I loved. They are open Friday through Sunday with meal times of 2:30, 5:30, and 7:30. There appears to be a good wine list, with great descriptions, but we didn't partake. The site is about 3/10 of a mile from the Staten Island ferry terminal. It's cash or Venmo only and Venmo does add the three percent (or whatever it is) fee. For the large filling meal we had, what amounts to a three course meal, and a couple large bottles of sparkling water, it was about a 100 dollars before tip. Is this the best food you'll ever have? Maybe not. Is it an experience you'll never forget? Definitely. Take the free and romantic ferry ride over to the bullied borough and check it out.

Yelp
The service was wonderful. The food is amazing. The Burata, hot peppers, lasagna a la Nonna, the gelato and coffees. So much food. So much love Nonna Maria visits you several times during the meal and adds that little extra love. Ambiance is very warm and friendly. They don't rush you . You must go!!!

Eve S.

Yelp
I took my friend to dinner at Enoteca Maria for her birthday. The restaurant decor was ugly, but the food was delicious. Our server was excellent. A friendly "Nonna" named "Maria" repeatedly visited our table. We ordered the Harvest Salad, Lasagna Della Nonna, and Lasagna Bianca. Large portions! We ate the Gateau au Chocolat for dessert.

Yelp
If you are going to have food at one restaurant in NYC I will venture to say that this should be the one. And yes it is in Staten Island. It is conveniently located a walkable distance across (a short five minute or so) from the St. George's ferry. Founded by an Italian American who's Nonna (grandma) is the magical cook that can whip up heartwarming fresh dishes from her Naples childhood is the star of the show. However, they have a unique set up where they would have Nonna's from all over the world (such as Palestine, Egypt, Ukraine, Japan) take over the second kitchen and create dishes and food from their childhood from where they grew up. A unique and powerful idea. I have tried the Colombian, Italian and Egyptian Nonna's food and also the Turkish Nonna's food as well. On my latest visit I tried the Harvest salad which has peaches and apples sliced with cheese and greens and warm walnuts sprinkled on top. Fresh and refreshing, just like the Mozzarella and tomato salad. However the most unique dish I tried on my last visit was the Lasagna Bianca which is a vegetarian lasagna and the most unique concoction of tastes I have tasted in Italian cooking. The layers of organic pasta with mozzarella, ricotta and a medley of seasoned sauteed vegetables in a creamy bechemel sauce. Also tried the Linguini Aglio e Olio which is the simplest of combination of garlic, linguini, olive oil and love, sprinkled with red pepper flakes. The Turkish Nonna makes the best Kofte you will ever taste in your life. These are rounded patties of ground beef seasoned with inions, fresh herbs, then pan fried and served with rice and a side salad (see pictures) Try if for the food and you will remember your grandma's cooking and if you never had your grandma's cooking then all the more reason to visit!

Yelp
Italian Grandmothers and nonnas from around the world with farm to table fare that is so worth a visit. Location: a short walk from the Staten Island Ferry station ferry terminal, I would remember to stop at the ATM(cash point) on the way because it is cash only. Also, you should probably have a reservation if you have not already made one. Call and ask Joe, the owner, he will do his best to accommodate. As you walk in you will notice that this is a tiny but mighty restaurant that has a warm feel with some industrial design elements. You may notice extensive super hero figurines on side above the large wine selection that enoteca is the Italian word for Wine repository and Maria is Joe's mother. He named the restaurant in his honor and this place has been labor of love. Now, I have been fortunate to be coming to this place for about a decade with many special memories and meals along the way with Joe, Paula, and all of the grandmas. Food and drinks: Anything and everything is great. I particularly love the meat and fish selections paired with next level locally sourced vegetables produce. You can't go wrong but ask for recommendation. As aforementioned, they have a deep wine list which will satisfy most all patrons. Service: At this place, it is not service. You are part of the family and they know when to give you time but also help when needed. Paula and Joe know the perfect timing. Sum-up: Make a reservation, get some cash out, and enjoy some Italian and international cuisine at a NYC institution. Looking forward to the soon film which will feature Joe and his story with the grandmothers. Vince Vaughn will play Joe in a hopefully classic film. Skip the movie before you go to experience this real life "Cinema Paradiso"(personal favorite film) for the real life restaurant version.

Yelp
I have to admit that I usually don't leave a bad review, unless something has gone really wrong and went unchecked. I am hoping to prevent certain unmet expectations from future patrons. Having tried to have dinner at this place for many years now, I was always unsuccessful in making a reservation. To my surprise I was able to make one for a Friday night. I was really excited to feel the welcome and eat the authentic deliciousness of what was supposed to be so much talked about, Nonna's experience, or so I thought. This was no grandmother's welcoming place! Very dark ambiance with some obscure toys... chairs and tables without imagination and rather uncomfortable. Barely any room to maneuver for anyone including the waitstaff. What also irked me was the tension in the room, not so much from the patrons, but from the staff... the bar tender (owner?) had not smiled once, Nonnas did not even come close to my own! The Italian one chatting up every table, which I admit was cute, while delegating to the wait staff, again while bickering with the other rotating Nonna who was on her phone... I wasn't prying, just very difficult to miss the dynamic in such a small space. Foodwise, it was mediocre at best. It wasn't bad, just nothing special... we had some apps from both the staple menu and from the rotating Nonnas. We didn't finish the feta cigars at $16 /4 pcs. If one can't tell the difference between a store bought and the restaurant served dish, there is a problem. The meatballs were pretty good, but as the Nonna herself pointed out, very easy to make at home... the branzino was prepared well. I have to admit that I loved the salad that came with the fish. My husband also wanted to try the Japanese vegetarian entree... Unfortunately none of the dishes left a wow! Had high expectations and was disappointed. This is not a place where I will long to return to, unlike my grandmother's kitchen.

Yelp
This is one of those institutions that you have to go to if you live on Staten Island. From the moment you walk in the customer service is incredible, from the owner/founder to the waitstaff to the grandmas of course. The Italian food is absolutely to die for. The lasagna in particular knocked our socks off. The Egyptian seafood stew was pretty good, and the Japanese desserts - wow! Go!

Fayh S.

Yelp
Had late lunch with family here. We didn't realized they close for break @4.30. We arrived around 4 o'clock. Rushing to order before the kitchen closed. The lasagna portion is enough to share and delicious. The meatball is decent also. Their red sauce reminded hubby to his grandma Sunday sauce. We also order the special chicken dish from PR. Overall the food is delicious.

Yelp
What a beautiful concept and such a lovely evening! This little Italian restaurant (main menu) has a different "nonna" cooking their culture's dishes. We had a nonna from Turkey cooking 3 dishes and we ordered all 3, but also had 3 dishes from a nonna from Japan. We then, of course, had to have nonna Maria's lasagna and 3 desserts. Everything was DELICIOUS!!! The entire experience was just super charming. There were 4 of us and we left full & happy! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

Yelp
Pizza is so good but I always ho back gor Stromboli which is delicious. Service is excellent and ambience is great since they have 3 different seating options, fast seating, bar area and dining room.

Yelp
Everything here was so good and everyone was so nice! It's a relatively small space so best to make reservations beforehand. The miso salmon was the best I ever had and the meatballs and sausage were so soft and flavorful. The portion size was also really big so we were all stuffed by the end of the meal. They have a rotating menu so I would definitely come back again!!

Abbey R.

Yelp
The best spot to eat near the Staten Island ferry / St George. Sat at the bar and enjoyed quick and friendly service. Solid wine selection, even better food! There was a Peruvian Nonna in house tonight but I was called to traditional Nonna fare and got the Lasagna Della Nonna. It was perfect...The layers! The banana pudding was insane- creme bruelee bananas with homemade cookies. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
After the NY Times, Sporkful, and national press starting raving in 2017, it was on our list. But 2 years of closure. What better than cooking from Italian and other nationality grandmas?? We took the 30-minute Uber from LES to somewhere in Staten Island. Cozy and friendly would be the first descriptors. Add packed - so reserve. The menu always has Italian dishes and then meals made by rotating grandmas from other countries. Ours was Turkish although there were 2 Jamaican dishes. We ordered a variety of appetizers and entrees. Most were excellent but I must confess the lasagna was my favorite. One of the Turkish appetizers tested your "hot" tolerance. Further, some of the dishes were enormous - as the rabbit. So order fewer appetizers or plan on taking much home. It was a veery fun and memorable evening. BTW - they have a large wine list - many countries - and don't think any were priced above $40. Damages for 4 with tip was $300.

Yelp
"We're going forward into the future, not back into the past," said Isobel Crawley. "If only we had the choice," responded Violet Crawley. WIth a tear in my eye and my mind full of nostalgia, I think of those lines from a show about two grandmothers talking about the passage of time. Indeed, a trip here does the impossible: it gives the diner a chance to turn back the hands of time and return to a place when your grandma would welcome you and tell you to eat. Not ask, but tell. The food is like grandma's: delicious and nutricious, a rare combination these days. I went when two nonnas, one from Peru (Nonna Rosa) and the other from Japan (Nonna Yumi), headed the kitchen. I enjoyed a delicious sautéed Peruvian cod with gyoza and some Italian rosé. For dessert, I had a delicious matcha cheesecake and espresso. Two distinct dishes from two distinct cultures cooked by two distinct chefs was quite the New York experience. The restaurant is cozy, giving a feeling that you're at grandma's. Because of its small size, I highly recommend making reservations. They have indoor and outdoor options. The staff was friendly, attentive, and above all, professional. I felt welcomed and well attended. I highly recommend to both locals and those who wonder into Staten Island. Indeed, here I felt like I had the option to turn back the hands of time and sit down to eat my nonna's food.

Yelp
Randomly walked by, and this place was busy ! Luckily they were able to sit us outside. They have a cute little house that sits max 8 people . They have a little heater, if needed and window for ventilation. Really romantic vibe to be honest. The servers here are all so friendly. We only got one thing just because we were full and just wanted to try things, and they weren't rude about it. They were super attentive and even offered to give me more bread. Got the vegan dumpling because the pork was sold out. Really good, with their sauce and the cucumber complimented it. Overall everyone here seemed so happy and they do give off that family vibe! Must stop place !

What a wonderful little Staten Island gem. The Italian and Nigerian menu was absolutely superb and the service was wonderful. It's the epitome of what makes NYC special.

Yelp
We had a great dinner at Enoteca Maria! We arrived at 7:15 for our 7:30pm seating. The hostess greeted us right away and explained that they were clearing tables from the first seating and she would seat us at 7:30pm. We were seated and our server was right there bringing us water and getting our drink order. This is a very small and quaint restaurant. Once we started looking around we noticed the decor and all the marvel characters. We weren't exactly sure how the dinner would go and we were a little confused on who our Nona would be. The website said Nonna Dolly from Shri Lanka, but when we were seated the menu gave three options... Turkey, Japanese or Italian (they have Italian at every seating). Nonna Maria came over to see us and she made our night. She was spunky and friendly. The quintessential Italian Grandma!! We were a party of 6 and we ordered from the Turkish menu and the Italian menu. All of our food was amazing and the service was excellent! We were hoping to meet the other Nonna but she was really busy in the kitchen. When she headed home at the end of the evening everyone gave her an ovation.

Yelp
It's such a cute idea nonna's around the world cooking! Nonna Maria was walking around talking to every table. She was very sweet and kind. We went the night an Armenian Nonna cooked. We got some pan friend chicken with rice and tried their Italian menu, porchetta. I'm giving this place 5 stars for the service and ambiance. The food is 4 /5. The chicken wasn't dry but I wish it had more flavor. It just tasted like pan fried chicken. The porchetta wasn't too bad. The skin was so crispy! The pork was soft and very fatty. I didn't get much flavor out of it either. I'd come back and give it another try.

Yelp
The food is amazing. It's small and unique. Love the grandmas. Highly recommend. Especially great for date night!

Yelp
My mom and dad were in town, and I made a reservation and took them as I'd heard so much about the experience. It did not disappoint. Because they aren't super mobile, I drove in and was able to find parking nearby, which was key. I believe it's not super easy to get to. The ambiance was awesome and the food was as good as expected. Would love to go back and try again...the joy is that with each nonna, the menu changes, so you can't get tired of what's to offer!

Yelp
When we came here, it was the Egyptian grandma's day to cook. She made us a seafood medley which I was surprised by how tender the calamari was. Solid work on the rice too. Just FYI, they're cash only and have a pretty limited non-alcoholic drinks menu (flavored Pellegrino is pretty much it).

Yelp
Worst experience I've ever had for dinning. Clearly double standard of service as we are the only table of Asian in the resultant. The server is not giving us water, not taking our order, not asking how the food was, ignore me for at least three times when ask for box/check, no smile at all when talking. Plus they don't accept credit card, only venmo and cash. Yet the venom is not working. The food was strong in taste and a bit overpriced, idk why people keep sucking there ass, clearly not worth it.

Yelp
Food was great and the Nona cooking was adorable. She made a great red sauce and lamb dish for Easter. The service on the other hand was pretty bad - almost felt like I was being treated like a kindergartner and we had to ask several times for various items. She also only took one category at a time - if you try to order pasta with your wine she'll say brb and wander off with the drink order and restart. The place has potential from a decor perspective but has a bunch of comic book paraphernalia instead of restaurant decor. Come for the food but make sure it's not a busy day.

Yelp
This is my 3rd visit to this distinctly different fabulous off beat eatery. It was featured a while back on a major news station. The schtik is that there are different nonas from different countries cooking various specialties from their country so the menu is always changing. There is always an Italian Nona on hand though. Part of the menu could be a little jarring for some - featuring testicles, kidneys, hearts, feet etc while the rest could be straight on ravioli , lasagna, stews, ribs etc. I was with 5 people Portobello mushroom in pastry puff - excellent Long hot peppers stuffed with spicy sausage and Parmesan cheese - amazing but REALLY spicy Fruitti di mare - incredible with the best lemon vinaigrette Ribs that fell off the bone served with scrumptious carrots (slightly sweet), celery and cabbage with a side of polenta. Just perfection Porchette with a side of veggies Lasagna made with beef and pork ragu. Everything blended perfectly - not one ingredient overwhelmed the rest. Rigatoni stuffed with sausage and shrimp. Deserts to kill. This restaurant is a must. Reservations are hard to get. The special Nona is only there for dinner not lunch. Lunch features the Italian Nona only.

Yelp
I love that this place is run by grandmas from all over the world! So fun that the menu rotates between foods of different countries. My favorite dish is the white lasagna!! I also love the filo pastry Greek appetizer and the pork. I've been here a few times and the grandmas are so sweet

Yelp
Our daughter Sierra met some people from Enoteca Maria and led us there last night for a fabulous grandmother inspired Italian and Middle Eastern meal. (There are sometimes visiting Nonna's from other cultures to add to the Italian menu. Last night she was Middle Eastern) The combination of great food, wonderful service and ambiance, led by Paola and Nonna Maria, has moved Enoteca Maria to the position of my most favored restaurant in NY. Enoteca Maria is a good price performer and the ferry ride only adds to the fun. Among us we ate baba ganoush, meatballs, stuffed cabbage, lasagna, and branzino. Of course we also had fococaccia and pickled vegetables to begin with carrot cake to conclude. Yes, we ate well and tried to sample the menu. It was great. If you have ever had a Grandmother inspired meal, you will know what I am talking about.

Yelp
Brought my italian grandma here and it got her seal of approval. That's all that needs to be said let's be honest XD. Great food AND great and friendly service. We had the pleasure of tasting Maria from Lombardy's homemade cavatelli, stuffed calamari and zucchini parm all of which were absolutely delicious. I have never had such tender calamari. Also one of the only meatballs I've enjoyed while dining out. That's a sure sign of quality Italian food! I will definitely be frequenting this place from now on.

Yelp
Revolving menu because of their policy of revolving chefs -the nonnas. Tried rabbit stew, didn't taste like I remember- Rabbit was a bit dry. Service was excellent as you'd expect from this caliber of dining. I'd give them another try on the next chef rotation

Yelp
Some of the best food I've ever eaten! The fresh focaccia was perfection. The Turkish chicken was flavorful and hearty. Staff was lovely as well!
