Portland’s Most Anticipated Restaurant, Bar, and Pod Openings, Spring 2021 - Eater Portland

"Scout Beer is opening another pod with a promising slate of carts: Poppyseed, the new cart from a Le Pigeon alum serving everything from duck pate to sticky toffee pudding sundaes, will move into the pod, as well as beloved vegan taco cart Taquiza Vegana. The cart will also host two new carts: Maillard, a cart from former Nostrana cook Andrew Gillis, as well as a New England steak bomb cart called Wicked Good Subs. Scout Beer will handle the booze, and a cart called Piece of Planet will make Indian staples and breads in a clay oven." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

I came to Portland for a short getaway, and was craving some good street food. We were introduced to 28th Parallel Food carts and immediately noticed how private it felt from the main road with so many options. We walked from cart to cart perusing the menu before settling on a little bit of everything. Our group tried the Chopped Cheese, several shawarma dishes (my fav), crispy tacos and Kazakhstan stew. All were very good! We topped it off with cold local beer from Pour Choice for the perfect lunch date. We liked that the area was a quick drive to our next stop OMSI. Conveniently located, friendly workers, clean picnic bench seating area and a nice variety of food options. We would return again!

Abdul hooked me up with one of the best meals of my life. Garlic sauce and hot sauce (like Frank’s) and pickles leveled up my chicken gyro. I’ll dream of this dish until I return, probably 11am tomorrow. So damn good. GYRO KINGDOM 10 stars out of five.

Google
28th parallel is such a great spot for good food and crisp beer! My family and tried items from every cart and everything tasted great. Pour Choice PDX beer cart had crisp, fresh beers on tap. Great place to hang out! Definitely recommend

Google
Would highly recommend the Kyrgyzstani food cart! The salmen (meat and potato filled pastries) were delicious. The service was very friendly, welcoming, and quick. Will definitely return! Rahmen!

Google
Shawarma House!!! Is the Best Shawarma I have EVER had!!! I seek out shawarma every where so I know what I’m talking about :) !! Flavorful and right!!! People go here!! You won’t be sorry!!

Google
I’ve never had food from Kyrgyzstan before, but the cart here is top notch delicious stuff. We had the Lagman and the Kazan Kebab. The Lagman had perfectly chewy hand cut noodles with an amazingly fatty stewy broth, perfect for a cold night. The Kazan kebab came with potatoes and a sort of pickled onion, so good. The owner also gave us some complimentary tea while we waited. Was lucky enough to run into a Kyrgyz guy while waiting in line and he let us know some of his favorite items; the wife and I will definitely be back for more! Great addition to this super underrated pod!

Google
Just what this neighborhood needed! Yes, we have amazing restaurants and carts already, but this is nex level. Lots off VEGAN options - everything fresh and so much care. I love the My Taco places fresh vegan taco plate, Chopped Cheese PDX's vegan chili fries, the plantains from the Cuban cart, fresh veggie wraps from the wonderful Shwarma cart - lots of great places to sit and enjoy a beer from Pour. It's just spectacular.

Google
Thai spot was straight on🔥, the shawarma house has some of the best sauces and wraps in town and everyone is so friendly. Definitely don't miss out on this cute little ring!

Yelp
Okay let's get it simple. Chopped cheese (an east coast delicacy), has made its way to Portland. Then there was a good old fashion Ruben. The Ruben was just okay. I kept my pants on for that one. The chopped cheese though? That blew my face off. One of the best things you can get on a hoagie this side of the Mississippi. Get that. Go home and eat it. Go to sleep. Wake up, and go back and get it again. Elite stuff. The rest of the menu looked pretty sexy too. (4.7 Stars)

Yelp
Atmosphere: Food truck pod Food: I was very excited when I got the cheesesteak. It was piping hot and I had high hopes, especially with Whiz. The whiz was done right and was nice and thin as opposed to being too thick like some places do it. I appreciated the idea behind putting multiple cheese types in here, but I think it probably would have been better with just whiz. Unfortunately, my biggest gripe with this sandwich was that the meat used was pretty clearly chopped up burger meat as opposed to the typical shaved steak that you would typically encounter in a cheesesteak. While I hoped that this wouldn't make too much of a difference and would still be an enjoyable sandwich, I just couldn't overlook it as I ate the sandwich. Price: $17 for a cheesesteak (as of June 12, 2025). Reubens were $19. Prices are a bit high in my opinion Service: Excellent service. Very friendly and accommodating Parking: Street parking. Parking in the area can be a little tight but you can find something if you don't mind walking a couple blocks

Yelp
More like 4-1/2 stars. I loved the sandwich, but have to take off at least half point for the lack of hot pepper or hot sauce options. I mean, since they're already chopping up a bunch of stuff for you, why not offer chopped hot peppers as an optional add-in? For those of us who like it spicy, this is a sandwich that cries out for chiles of some sort. I took mine home and poured hot sauce on before each bite. But it would have been better if the peppers had already been part of the sticky, gooey, yummy mess. Or even, since the chefs are obviously gourmets, have a housemade hot sauce available, but offer to mix it into the sandwich rather than having to pour it on later. The only optional add-on they have now is making it "dirty," which means you buy a small bag of commercial snack chips -- corn, potato, whatever you like -- and they'll chop it into the mix. But the sandwich is dang good other than that omission. If you like saucy meatballs with cheese, greasy cheeseburgers, sloppy joes -- this is sorta like those, but maybe better. I just had my first chopped cheese today, and I'm hooked. I'm not usually a big eater, and I'm pretty much a health-foody semi-vegetarian, but I ate almost the whole sandwich, including half a pound of beef. It's just so good. I'm talking about the Chopped Cheese, on hero bun. That's their namesake, signature dish. Some reviewers here talk about the Philly cheesesteak or the Reuben -- those might be good, but if you don't get a Chopped Cheese you're missing the point of this place. Next time I'll probably bring a friend to share it with, so I'm not tempted to pig out so much. It seems like it would be a tough thing to save and reheat the next day.

Yelp
It's a food truck, but the food is fantastic! The fries are great, but the chop steak is amazing. Soft melts away has a great spice. Services fun. A married couple that are just very cool and happy. Yeah ambience is nothing to write home about Butt go for the food.

Yelp
First time having a chopped cheese and now I'm sad that I can't get this back home! Everything about this sandwich was perfect. Although it was stuffed to the brim with ingredients, the bread held up really well and stayed fluffy. The filling was the perfect balance of cheese, ground meat, and vegetables. The meat was cooked perfectly and stayed juicy and tender. Each bite was an umami explosion in my mouth and it left me wanting to try everything on their menu. The owners of this cart were so kind and friendly as well! They noticed we were waiting for their cart to open and tried to speed up opening for us. There's also a shaded tent right next to the pick up station where you can enjoy your food. I highly recommend eating it fresh!

Yelp
As an east coaster, I think this is the best chopped cheese I've had in Portland! My partner and I split the sub and fries and it was more than enough.

Yelp
I've never had a chopped cheese anything before in my life, but based on the reviews it seemed this was the one to order. First of all their bread of choice - from one of my favorite bread folks- dos hermanos is delicious. The sandwhich was ooey, gooey, and just the right amount of tanginess and zing. For those like me who are new to this ---- Imagine the best meaty, cheesy, casserole you've ever eaten in your life living on a hero. Tasty, comforting and the owners couldn't have been more friendly and helpful.

Yelp
I picked this from the yelp reviews and was not let down. A cool set up of a handful of food trucks that are professional and appealing. Parking is a little tight, but that didn't bother me. I decided on chopped cheese for my first time visit and ordered the Ruben sandwich with fries! It was so totally delicious. The bread was perfectly cooked and the corn beef was amazing. That's the way a Ruben should taste. The sandwich was packed of corn beef and in no way did they skimp on ingredients. A delicious tang with the delicious sauerkraut. And the bread was fresh and toasted perfectly. What it made the trip perfect wasn't just the food, but the owner was extremely inviting and took the time to make conversation. In fact, I went in the next day and ordered the same thing because it was so delicious. While I was sitting down waiting for my order on the first day, I grabbed a beer next-door and sat down waiting for a very short time for my sandwich to be ready for take out. Forgot to mention, the fries were cooked perfectly and they gave a huge amount that I ate throughout the next couple of hours working. If you're looking to take a chance on food trucks, give these professionals an opportunity to make your day!! The photo doesn't do the sandwich any justice. I had them serve it to me without any of their normal presentation and wrapping that they had done the prior day so well. I was taking it to my car to eat without judgment, lol! Yum Trust me, the sandwich is thick and literally fed me for two days and I'm a big guy. I'll take a more detail photo the next time I show up. The owner is very approachable and genuine. She takes great pride in making sure the food met my expectations and loved my feedback.

Yelp
Decided to try a philly cheese steak since it's been a couple of years since I last had one. Looked up places around me and landed on Chopped Cheese PDX. I got the east coast Philly $18 and the girlfriend got the chopped cheese $17 on hero's. We both really enjoyed what we got. The total of both sandwiches includes the +$1 to add the small side of potato salad which we really liked. One of the best new food carts we have had in while. Solid place, will be back for sure

Yelp
Having never visited New York or spent much time on the East Coast, the chopped cheese has always been something they do that I have been somewhat fascinated with. Well, I finally got to try one and it did not disappoint. Basically a chopped cheese is ground beef cooked on a flat top and then they add cheese, onions, peppers, and whatever else and toss it in a roll. Kinda like a Philly Cheesesteak, but quite possibly better than any Cheesesteak I've ever had. The tomato soup was good as well. Lots of layers of flavor and dimension and rather different than most tomato soups. This place is great, so get to it before it takes an hour to get a sandwich.

Yelp
I have been searching for a place that does a chopped cheese in town and finally found one. This food cart is located in a food cart pod off Ne 28th and Glisan. They do have a few other items besides the chopped cheese that included French dip, cheesesteak sandwiches, and reuben. We got the chopped cheese and a West Coast Philly cheesesteak. The chopped cheese was wonderful and made just the way you would want it to be. It's definitely great, however I fell in love with the West Coast Philly. Something about all the combination and the cheese whiz just made it the perfect Philly. I can't wait to come back and try a couple of the other items next time.

Yelp
Craving meat lately & finally got the East Coast Philly- Whatta a delicious pleasure! Owners were super kind and obviously know what they're doing. One of the best NY steak sandwiches I've had in Portland! Will visit again soon. Thanks for a familiar taste of the homeland. I'm walking over here!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food and super friendlyservice! I especially loved the French Dip with the Guinness glaze. Meat was tender and tasty and the Dos Hermanos bun soaked up the glaze and the au jus perfectly. Love that they offer East and West Coast style Philly Cheesesteak, and I have been missing a good Philly Cheesesteak in inner E Portland since West Coast Phillys closed. Will definitely be back and bring some friends.

Yelp
Insanely delicious. Incredibly nice and professional Lisa and Josh who own the cart. They care deeply about what they're putting out. It's a really well constructed menu where you can't go wrong. Of course I had the chopped cheese! It was absolutely everything you would want in a sandwich. I'll definitely return and try many more things! Please support these wonderful folks because they bring the goods!

Yelp
I want to complain. I really do. But pretty much like every other reviewer I was filled up, satisfied and happy. There's enough to choose from for beef eaters, other eaters, and veggie eaters. Not sure about vegans. I do honestly believe that most people will get a nice sampling of food from our east coast and it will leave them coming back for more!
google avatar

Ari C.

Yelp
Solid! Amazing food! Ordered a chopped cheese and an East coast cheesesteak. This could have easily fed four people. Excellent service. Wonderful food (chopped cheese was the fave). Will be back!

Yelp
They had me at meow! I was lured by the delicious photos and good reviews, but I knew these were my kind of people when I rang that bell. I've never had a chopped cheese before. I'm deeply sorry I've been missing out all of these years. My guy & I got a chopped cheese with no lettuce (because I'm a strictly no salad on my burgers kinda girl. It doesn't belong, I cannot be convinced otherwise) on a hero and an east Philly, so we could have the best of both worlds, because that's how we roll and frankly how any pair dining together should do. And a side of fries. That chopped cheese was phenomenal. My initial thought was to hold the red wine vinny, not because I don't like the flavor profile, but because I didn't want it to contribute an unnecessarily soggy bun. It didn't. I took one bite and didn't, couldn't, put it down. That shit was good. Like real good. It was all over my cheeks, running down my forearms...bits of cheesey beefy goodness spilling out everywhere. (This is where the fries come in handy) The East coast Philly was also delish; in our opinion, the meat could've use more salt, but I loved all the cheese and the hero held up perfectly. I never knew it was the west coast that messed up the Philly with their peppers & fungus, but I'm pleased to not have to mod this one, it's done just right: ribeye & onion with all the cheesus. The fries were fresh and crisp with a sauce I could've used another several sides of. I didn't expect them to be Cajun reasoned, not sure if we glazed over that description. The only disappointment was not having received any of that delicious potato salad everyone is talking about in their reviews. I'll try not to take this personally and hope for some on our next visit. We live in the burbs; Chopped Cheese PDX isn't in our neck of the woods or on the way to anywhere, but we will absolutely travel for delicious eats & will visit again soon.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY MOST TRY! I am obsessed with Rueben's and Philly cheese steaks, I've tried one in every major city in the US and these guys have THE BEST hands down! my GOD!! They put their spin on them and it should be the new standard. The portions are huge but the proportions are perfect. Seasoning, sauces, breads on points and all of it unique and high quality! 100/10 will eat again! instantly my new must go when I'm on the west coast! service was exceptional, nice little area, heated covered seating. all around fantastic experience!

Wulf M.

Yelp
Bravo - got the cheese thing and holy moly its one of the best sandwiches i ever had. Most of the food in portland is super overrated but this place is legit, ambiance and service are great as well 5 stars a+
google avatar

Chloe R.

Yelp
Best chopped cheese in Portland, had to try the namesake first & can't wait to get the rueben next time! Portion size for the price cannot be beat. ... easily could be two meals but it's so good you just can't stop. Oreo peanut butter cheesecake made me moan (hot). Insanely great customer service (reminds me of old Portland, if you know you know)

Robin M.

Yelp
This place is appropriately named. The chopped cheese burger is the star. First time we've had one. I can't imagine anyone doing it better. Don't ignore the little side of potato salad they throw in with every meal. It was an amazing surprise. We all 4 loved it. We'll be back, often.

Yelp
My wife and I ate there last week and were very impressed. Friendly staff, quick service and probably most important: Great Food. They offer some unique food choices that are hard to find in Portland. I had the Philly CheeseSteak and my wife had the classic Cheese Sandwich with Tomato Soup. Both came with some great Potato Salad and a pickle. The flavor of everything was...Umami I guess. Wonderful. Additionally, most of their ingredients are locally sourced; their breads are absolutely delicous. Gene and Georgia

Larry R.

Yelp
I got it on hoagie (more $$) with just hamburger and onions and cheese, so it might be better with lettuce tomato (I hate mayo) and vinegar? I like the one at CRUX brewery allot better, though that is in a different part of Portland. Theirs includes really good fries $16 before beer and tip., here a coke is like $4.50 so I think the total before tip is $19. CRUX has table service and indoors and outdoors seating. (I thought I was getting a can of coke but they only had bottle for a dollar more.) I might try some of their other sandwiches when I am nearby.

Yelp
Everything is great! Fresh and hot off the grill. Try them. Lisa and Josh are very devoted to pleasing you!

Yelp
This food truck is near and dear to my heart! They have amazing chopped cheese sandwiches! I tried their northwest version with grilled veg. Just the right ratio of meat to cheese to roll! They don't have hot peppers which is a personal preference, but well worth the trip. They have a dipped sandwich that I'm dying! Seriously though, if you like cheesesteak sandwiches, you need to give Chopped Cheese PDX a try! Great people, great food, fair price!
google avatar

Andy I.

Yelp
Absolutely blown away by how delicious the chopped cheese on a hero sub was! Almost seemed like Michelin star chefs working behind the scenes. They also source high quality ingredients, which is obvious once you eat any of their offerings. And they have incredible veggie/vegan options. I will be back many times. I will bring many people. They deserve to be known!
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Really delicious food, we got the chopped cheese with potato salad and it was so good! You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

P K.

Yelp
yall @chopped_cheese_pdx just brought me back to life. this potato salad is unreal. the fries were maybe the best in portland and reminded me of Checkers back east. the tomato soup was toe curling and the french dip/au jus made me cry a little. that chopped cheese was so authentic i took a bite and a bodega cat appeared. 12/10

Tiffany M.

Yelp
So they have really great east coast style food and their burgers are so tasty give them a try they are new.

Killer chopped cheese, ran over on a lunch break and they got me my sandwich fast, so delicious, I can see why they are rated so highly. I'll be coming back.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Just opened and definitely recommend the Chopped Cheese and coney fries.

Andy K.

Yelp
Got the east coast cheese steak. It was delicious. Heavenly good. The food cart atmosphere was nice too. Bring your own water or buy it. Sushi's next door was good too.

Robert T.

Yelp
Amazing chopped cheese sandwich with great customer service as well. Nice addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
This place is the shit! If you don't go you miss out. They have the food in town. They have the best service too.
