Yelp
With Polonia next door it's the battle of the pierogies! While Anthony Bourdain did indeed go to Polonia and sang its praises legend has it Polish Village Café was tapped first but with the narrow stairs leading to the cellar/basement level they were not able to get their filming equipment down there. To summarize my point of the dueling pierogies story my friends is this: Don't miss out on Polish Village Café! Try both places and you will get an accurate comparison of Polish cuisine. Similar yet different. I want to say the 4 of us ladies got phenomenal service from Alexis. She made great suggestions, was prompt, and was able to make a few modifications for my pickier friends. We started with the soup. Dill pickle for my friends and beet for me. This was some of the best beet soup I've ever had. My Polish babcia would make her beet soup and thicken it with sour cream. Other than my grandma I've never had a thickened and creamy beet soup until here. Dill pickle soup was also great with a tangy but not overpowering pickle taste. Wanting to sample a variety and also wanting leftovers I went with the pick 3 meat plate (city chicken, chicken livers, and fresh Polish sausage). Wow talk about a menagerie of food. The sausage alone was enough to feed 2-3 people. They put a beer gravy over the top which is something I've never had but it works. Chicken livers were deep-fried and slightly on the salty side but dipping them in the extra beer gravy proved to be a wise choice. City chicken was just as I remembered from before. Whatever breading they use somehow manages to stay in place but you still get the tender juicy flavor from the pork and veal that shines through. All four of us had enough food left over for lunch the next day. Prices are more than reasonable for the amount and quality of food you get. I'm excited to be living in the Detroit area again and will be able to satisfy my Polish food cravings whenever the urge hits!

Yelp
This place is usually packed , people waiting on the stairwell to enter. I've been there several time with friends and family. All the servers were quick to get food orders and very nice. Absolutely recommend the Dill Pickle Soup. Now for the hard part, the main event... which is btw the stuffed cabbage. ( also city chicken and meatballs) Unfortunately, for me, I don't eat pork. The stuffed cabbage and other meats are all pork. The rest of the meal consisted of canned vegetables, instant potatoes, rye bread and butter and kraut. I stopped at Sheetz on the way home. (That will be a later review) I still recommend for posterity

Yelp
The restaurant is in the basement and looks like a nice casual place to get some food or watch a game at the bar. It is cash only just a heads up and they do have an ATM. We ordered the mixed pierogis, mushroom crepes which came with a dill pickle soup, and the beet soup. I personally enjoyed the pierogis (except the sweet cheese or I liked that the least out of the mix) and the mushroom crepe. I am not crazy about dill pickles or beets so I didn't enjoy the soups too much. But decent place to have a casual meal.

Yelp
Great Polish food. Restaurant is in the basement of a former house. Cool atmosphere. Very similar to my Polish Grandmother's cooking! Service is good with a pretty quick turnaround. And prices are reasonable.

Yelp
Best polish food....ever? Grew up coming here and the basement vibes and authentic food is unmatched. Have a polish beer and enjoy a pick two with meatballs and stuffed cabbage. You won't regret it

Yelp
have been here four times and each was a great experience! decorations are super cute around the holidays, vibe is very cozy! I enjoy the beet soup, stuffed cabbage, and pierogies. staff is very friendly as well. downstairs can be a bit loud and tight, I prefer eating upstairs much more, for a more quiet and spacious experience. parking is not difficult if you park in the lot close to the restaurant. looking forward to my next trip here!

Yelp
After touring the Motown Museum, our group went to the Polish Village Cafe for a "Family Style" lunch. HUGE plates of MANY Polish favorites were brought to our tables. There was PLENTY of food for 2nd helpings and LEFTOVERS that we took home. The wait staff was efficient and attentive. The ambiance was like being in grandma's house. My grandparents and parents made many of these items for our family dinners when I was growing up. The Polish cuisine here is AUTHENTIC and HOMEMADE. You simply cannot buy a can of this stuff from GFS or SYSCO. Bathroom was clean and odorless. I SHALL RETURN!

Yelp
Great hidden jewel in the once Polish town of Hamtramck. Varied menu of your standard Polish plates. Some of the courses are with a twist like the Potato Pancakes with goulash on top. Pancakes were with a kick, they were spicy, and the plate would feed any man. We came on Sunday at noon and the place was humming with guests. Highly recommend coming in for some Polish food.

Yelp
Friends 10th ? Annual holiday get together ! About 75 people 1st time they served a buffet upstairs - worked out great great food , great service. All seemed to work out super. Just wonder why they won't spend just a bit of money & fix - redo the downstairs bathroom- been shut down for years ?

Yelp
Back after about a year the food and service are still great. Our larger group of 9 were seated quickly and didn't wait too long for our food. We had a 2 year old granddaughter with us so that was a big plus. She was really impressed with the darker lighting and all the Christmas lights and decorations. A few of us spilt meals and with the larger portions they serve it was plenty. Ordered a bunch of appetizers but no dessert because we were all full. Hope to be back soon.

Yelp
They still don't take credit card. The atm is a scam , it charges $10 and does a credit check on your card. Food was fine

Yelp
Traditional, heavy, Polish cooking, Served in a classic basement bar setting, by professional ladies, that's been there for decades. A nice combo platter, with the side of pierogies is plenty for 2 to take on a picnic to enjoy out in the fresh air!, Add a bottle of wine, and you have the perfect picnic! Don't forget to bring CASH!!!

Yelp
The worst Polish food I've had eating out. Absolutely underwhelming. I don't remember exactly what I got, but I do know the cucumber salad was so overrun with onions that it was almost inedible. I have never in my life had a cucumber salad that was made like that. As a Polish person who speaks the language and has Polish food at home on a daily basis, you'd be better off going to the Polish markets hot bar.

Yelp
This place is absolutely awesome, the food is so good here, very authentic and the best polish food I've ever had. The waitress was very attentive and definitely polish as she had a strong accent. The place is small but had a very polish ambiance about it and I loved it. I even tried the polish beer and that was amazing as well. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
This place was so lovely. The staff were friendly and inviting. The ambiance made us feel like we're in a different country when we went down those steps and into the dining room. The food was all delightful. Lots of meats and delicious sides. Their sauerkraut was so good. I definitely felt a home-cooked flavor and I felt like I was eating something made by people from that part of the world. The only reason I'm dropping a star is because of the payment process. They only want cash payments. They have an ATM onsite and when I went to take out cash, it ran out of it. Then they told me my server would come to us with a way to accept a card. She came, we tried, it failed multiple times, she had to go back to get it to work. Finally she came back and we got our bill paid. It was a negative way to end an otherwise lovely experience. It's 2023. You should absolutely have a reliable way to accept a card payment.

Yelp
For 34 years we have looked for a truly authentic Polish restaurant. In town for family and my first time in Motor City Detroit and we had family tell us of Polish Village Cafe Down the stairs and you walk into Eastern Europe. A quaint space full of history and heritage. The menu had some of the polish favorites that we have been looking for. Marta greeted us and was knowledgeable about the food and how to get the most from our experience Fresh pirogies, pan fried kielbasa, piping hot Czarnina. We got the stuffed mushroom crepes, juicy meatballs in brown gravy , roast pork with kraut. Every bite was a trip to another place. J and I shared everything and we had so much left to take back with us.... You get plates full of food and love...

Yelp
Adequate. The restaurant is located down a flight of stairs. The ambiance of the room is a step back in time nearly 100 years. The menu has a various options. Most of the items in my platter tasted like they were made a day ago and kept warm. The Dill Pickle soup was good. The service was distracted. Cash only - no credit cards.

Yelp
Polish cuisine has always held a special place in my heart. It was a cuisine that my grandma always made and was reserved for special occasions and holidays. That's why coming to the Polish Village Cafe feels like having my own family cook for me, even if they're not actually my family. The menu here is filled with classic options that are so comforting. From city chicken to stuffed cabbage, kielbasa to pierogis, and potato pancakes to name just a few. When it comes to choosing my favorite dinner, it's between the city chicken dinner and the Polish sampler plate. The city chicken dinner satisfies my cravings with its tender meat and delicious sides, but the Polish sampler plate allows me to indulge in a little bit of everything. The cafe is nestled in the basement of an old hotel (according to Google), giving it a unique charm. It can get crowded at times, but that only adds to the cozy and comforting atmosphere. It's an extra special place, especially during the holidays. I just love this place. It's a reminder of good food, cherished traditions, and the joy of being surrounded by loved ones.

Yelp
Solid four stars. Great service and excellent home cooked food. Don't let the location fool you. This is the real deal for authentic Polish food. Schnitzel, chicken livers, cabbage rolls were amazing. The blueberry cheesecake was outstanding and enough for 2-4 people. Will be back when we are in town again.

Yelp
We came in for lunch just after it opened one weekday recently. The main restaurant / bar is located in the lower level. What nice staff! Efficient too! I ordered a cup of Dill Pickle Soup and a Fried Pierogi platter. Wow! I highly recommend both dishes! The soup was excellent. The pierogi were served hot, wonderfully crispy and oh so flavorful. Do be aware, it can get loud in the restaurant. I saw signage posted throughout saying that they were "CASH ONLY" so be aware of that too. Parking is available in the lot next door for about $1 per hour, if nothing is found on the street.

Yelp
Went recently with friends and finally got to try the smalec- very good and the pickles with it hit the spot. I have eaten here before and I would say it's solid Polish food. I love that sour cream is a condiment in a squeeze bottle. The pierogi are good but I recommend the goulash- I can make my own golabki and kraut and kielbasa any time. I tried something different, the Hungarian pancakes. While good I should have gotten the goulash

Yelp
The BEST pierogis I've ever had! I'll definitely have to come back again. Service was kind, smooth, and professional.

Yelp
Amazing authentic polish food. Brings me back to my childhood eating at the home of my polish grandparents home. I have tried several items from the menu. Everything is excellent. Highly recommend the polish sausage soup, pierogies, polish sausage ,sourkraut, sampler plate. too many great selections to name. Service is always excellent.

Yelp
I recently dined at this restaurant on a busy Saturday, and it was quite a mixed experience. The staff was clearly working hard, but the congestion made it tough for them to attend to their tables effectively. The food, on the other hand, was just okay and won't leave a lasting impression. It's reminiscent of the comfort you'd expect at a fair or your grandma's cooking. One major drawback was the bathroom situation. There was only a single restroom for the entire place, which was quite gross. To make matters worse, I looked in the kitchen while waiting in line for the bathroom, which raised some concerns about hygiene and possible health code violations in the kitchen. Overall, the dining experience left a bit to be desired. Cash only no big deal just be prepared.

Yelp
I was a bit hesitant to go here as a lot of polish food contains glutenous foods. I ordered the stuffed cabbage and the cabbage soups and it was amazing!!! I actually can't wait to go back or pick up a catering order for their sausage and stuffed cabbage. It's a super old restaurant and the decor is a little old but I wouldn't expect anything grand. The food speaks for itself. Wait staff was very kind.
google avatar

Yelp
The service was very good. Our server was very sweet, friendly and attentive to our questions. Our table ordered the Stuffed Cabbage, Polish Plate, Pork Chops. The pork chops were excellent! I also enjoyed my stuffed cabbage.

Yelp
If you want authentic Polish food... this is the place!! Everything is top-notch authentic Polish! I was very impressed!! The dill pickle soup is fantastic!! A definite must try! It can get very busy and parking can be limited, but the food is well worth it! Service was kind, friendly and accommodating!

Yelp
This place should be condemned by the health department. Nasty, dirty kitchen and wash area. Piles and piles of dirty dishes, overflowing garbage cans, leftover food, all just piled in heaps. While waiting for the bathroom I watched someone stick their finger in sauce, then stick their finger in their mouth then put the sauce in something. 1 bathroom was out of order, the other was disgusting with paper towels everywhere, overflowing garbage cans, dirty toilet and floor. Just gross. Out waitress could not have been ruder. She must have thought she was clever but she was just obnoxious. Everything we asked for she gave us snark back as an answer. Our food took over an hour. It came in shifts. We got some wrong items then she said that WE ordered the wrong thing and argued with one of our party that she had ordered incorrectly. She had not. My stuffed cabbage was undercooked - think pink - and flavorless. My green beans had to have come out of a giant can. My mashed potatoes were also flavorless and had tomato sauce dumped on them. It was one of the most unappetizing meals I've had in years. My bf got the kielbasa. We both said it was no better then what you could buy and grill from Kroger or any grocery store. The chicken noodle soup was reminiscent of Mrs. Grass soup, tiny little noodles in a flavorless broth. WTF. I don't know what happened here - but wow, this place is a disaster now. I'd give this a big avoid. We asked if our waitress could split our checks, she said sure. When we were done, the checks weren't split and she sat down at a table next to us and did the calculations to see who owed what. Totally unsure if what we owed was correct but we were fed up by that point and just paid $44 for the worst meal I've ever had at a restaurant.

Yelp
My fiancé is from Minnesota, so while in Detroit on a visit I brought her on her first visit!! As soon as you walk in the door you are taken back in time by decor of an old style Detroit pub. Greeted by the kindest and most helpful wait staff. She recommended delicious beer and was very attentive. The food speaks for itself. Old world traditional Eastern European. The dill pickle soup is second to none, the dill cucumbers are so fresh and light and the polish plate gives you a taste of all their specialities. Pierogis are crispy on outside and flavor bursting inside , kielbasa is tender and so juicy, stuffed cabbage is how grandma makes it and gravy on the mashed potatoes is just damn good. Side note-I was also very impressed, as they have a vegetarian options!!

Yelp
Polish Village is one of the more well-known Polish restaurants in the Metro Detroit area, and for good reason. Outdoor seating is available in the warmer months. The interior has a speakeasy look to it. The service is sufficient. As for the food, there are plenty of options. The chicken noodle soup was good, but the dill pickle soup really surprised me. I'm not much of a pickle person, but it was delicious. The pan fried kielbasa and any of the pierogis are great apps. I didn't know what to expect from the schnitzel, as I always thought of that as more of a German dish. Come to find out, Polish schnitzel is ground meat, where German schnitzel is a pounded cutlet. The schnitzel was flavorful. Based on its appearance, I thought it was going to be dry, but it wasn't. I recommend the schnitzel dinner over the schnitzel sandwich. Keep in mind, this is a cash only establishment. In conclusion, Polish Village has something for everybody and offers an enjoyable dining experience.

Yelp
Absolutely the best polish food ever! The dill pickle soup is so yummy. I always get a side of pierogis, they are to die for!

Yelp
First time trying Polish food. We were hungry sure but the food was delicious. Service is quick and friendly. Bring cash though, no card.... Will be back - and looking forward to it

Yelp
If you are going on the weekend, make a reservation or be prepared to wait! This place is small and quaint. The service is fast and our waitress, Katrina, was delightful. The kielbasa appetizer we loved and was hands down better than than the kielbasa meal in our opinion. We sampled a variety of pierogi and it's was a thumbs up on all but our favorites were the traditional potato and cheese. The potato pancakes were delicious...even better heated up the next day for breakfast. The cabbage rolls are authentic and were delicious. We had one liver fan and he said the chicken livers were very good. My favorite was the beef rolls stuffed with ham and pickles. Speaking of pickles, the dill pickle soup gets two thumbs up. This is a gem!
google avatar

Yelp
Atmosphere was dark and old. Server was attentive but tried to up sell from a sandwich. Casual dining. Sides in small plastic containers. Lots of pepper In almost everything. Gravy on mashed was thick but flavorful. Pierogi were fried fry. I am used to sauté onions and butter. Stuffed cabbage was filled mostly with rice. I prefer an equal amount of rice and meat. Not the best but certainly not the worst.
google avatar

Vincent L.

Yelp
A Detroit stable in hamtramck. Authentic polish food and it was very very busy so the food can't be bad. I would get the half and half for appetizers, meatballs, stuff cabbage , polish sausage for entree. Don't get the garlic chicken because it is far from anything about garlic chicken. It is just a plain fried chicken cutlets. Try the polish beer too, seems like everyone was drinking that
google avatar

Dave K.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Detroit! The food is fantastic and the service is wonderful. It reminds me of restaurants from my youth in all the best ways. We both got the Polish plates which I recommend. Complimentary bread sticks and butter is so old school, I love it. Great vibe too.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
Outstanding recipes and service will make you forget about the old country (well, not really but almost)
google avatar

Andrea D.

Yelp
So legit. My grandma made amazing stuffed cabbage but theirs are the BEST I've ever had. The sour cream is definitely not lite or fat free and it does not disappoint. The potato pancakes with apple sauce are super yummy. My daughter really liked the kielbasa appetizer with grey poupon. Next time I go, I will get the boiled pierogis - just like nana used to make. Charming inside. Good service in spite of being insanely busy.

Randy T.

Yelp
Real authentic Polish food, with great service and good prices. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Food has always been good, but menu has been limited, depending on the day, which made getting the desired food hard. A little dark in the basement, has a great old bar and pub atmosphere. service was harried and fast!
google avatar

Janey B.

Yelp
This is the second time I have been lucky enough to be at work when Wendy brought lunch to EEC from Polish Village Cafe. I swear my Grandma Betty made the sour cream and cucumbers. I was taken back to childhood summers when we all ate dinner together and Grandma always had a bowl of these on the table. Wendy brought fresh bread and butter, crackers, Pierogis, lemon garlic chicken cutlets, kapusta, and...be still my heart, potato pancakes with sides of sour cream and applesauce. It brought tears to my eyes. To think after doing a days worth of Colonoscopies with the amazing Drs and staff at Eastside Endoscopy Center. We sat down and ate like a family.
google avatar

Yelp
Authentic Polish comfort food nice service and excellent beer on tap. Same building since 1969!

Yelp
This a yearly pilgrimage for a group of friends. This place is struggling with facility issues but always puts on a great meal. I go use to bringing cash . Sad that this year Hamtramck is having with their water and drainage in this great city. We always capped the day at one of the "local water holes" but they were all closed because of the facilities being broken.
google avatar

Taliy S.

Yelp
The outdoor seating area is so lovely!! on a good day it is a perfect spot! we tried their signature sample plate, called the Polish plate and everything was perfect!! we also had their crepes witch were amazing, especially raspberry and sweet cheese! and the waitress was nice and kind , Katezhyna!

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Too much pepper in golabki! The food here is usually really good but was pretty disappointed in how much black pepper was in the food. I'm allergic to black pepper and never had an issue here before. Service everything is always great.
google avatar

Elizabeth N.

Yelp
This place is a total dive! The food is SO yummy tho that you must come here. The beet soup was so flavorful. The pierogies were awesome, as was the mashed potatoes, galumpki and sausage. They were out of sweet pierogies when we came so we were disappointed but we must come back.
google avatar

Russel H.

Yelp
Huge portions at reasonable prices. I paid less than $30 (pre-tip) for three courses. I had the small potato pancake appetizer; four large pancakes for $8. The Polish sampler included stuffed cabbage, kielbasa, pierogi, and more. Service was attentive and friendly even though the small dining room was packed.
google avatar

Jo W.

Yelp
My first meal out in Detroit! Such a cute little place! Really enjoyed the pierogi and the chicken. It had a cute old-world Polish vibe. The waitstaff was very nice, and my friend and I left here satisfied and stuffed. We were seated by a cute piano in a corner near the entrance, and I'd say the vibe was pretty cozy.
