D.C. Food Writers Discuss Their Best Restaurant Meals of 2020 - Eater DC

"The giant platter of barbecue I ordered from 2Fifty. It included almost everything on the menu: beef rib, spare ribs, brisket, sliced turkey, pulled pork, all cooked slow over hardwoods until the line between smoke and meat was indistinguishable." - Gabe Hiatt

Today I ate at 2fifty's in Union Market, and I must say it was an outstanding experience. The name, representing the perfect temperature at which their beef brisket is cooked for 16 hours, sets high expectations, and they certainly deliver. The beef brisket was nothing short of exceptional, perfectly balanced between moist and lean, resulting in a melt-in-your-mouth texture. The hot and mild sauce options added an extra layer of flavor, and the sweet and sour pickles complemented the dish beautifully. I'll definitely be returning for the Mac and cheese, coleslaw, and cornbread in the near future. 2fifty's has undoubtedly earned its reputation as the best beef brisket in DC, and I can't wait to explore more of their menu.

This place was awesome. $21 for a 3 meat sampler, brisket, pulled pork, and sausage with 2 sides that was really delicious. Meat was juicy, I'm usually not a fan of sausage but it had allot of flavor. Very generous portion. This location is inside of union market and is usually pretty busy. But you get your order pretty quick, well worth the 10 min wait or so. Highly recommend!

Google
The customer service is A1 and the food outstanding.Everything is tender and tasty you will not regret it. The price reasonable for some bomb a** BBQ. I usually get the trinity Texas platter which is enough for two. ALL I CAN SAY IS THIS BY FAR THE BEST BBQ I EVER HAD IN TOWN. Both locations Riverdale and DC Union Market are delicious. Real smoked BBQ.

Google
Holy Texas Trinity! Incredible sampler of mouth-watering brisket, succulent and spicy sausage, and tender pulled pork with two ramekins of sweet and spicy bbq sauce. But wait, there's more: two mini sides of your choosing (the Mac n Cheese and potato salad were delish), plus pickles and onions. And toast. I never made it to the toast. Absolutely epic bbq.

I came here for the brisket and it did not disappoint. Good brisket is difficult to find in DC but this place nails it. I will be back soon.

I don’t have the right words to the describe the flavors in these meets… from the taste, the juiciness are AMAZING! And don’t get me started with the customer service, everybody is friendly and polite. The place looks clean and neat clean. I really liked the design inside the place. It is definitely WORTH IT! Can’t wait to go back.

Google
That was delicious. Straight brisket, slice of bread and pickles. Perfect tangy sauce although did not even need it.

I lived in Texas for over 20 years and am well accustomed to Texas bbq, so I knew I had to give 2fifty’s a try. While this isn’t on the level of places like Snows, Terry Black’s, Franklin, or Pecan Lodge, it’s still the best Texas bbq I’ve had in the DMV. The brisket was tender, had the right amount of pull, was well seasoned, and not too fatty. The sausage was good as well, a little less flavor than expected, but honestly tasted along the same lines as what you would get from a place like Kreuz. Make no mistake, this isn’t going to taste like bbq local to the east coast, so if that’s what you’re used to I recommend coming in with an open mind, remembering that across the country bbq styles widely vary, and that even the best bbq joints don’t always have consistent quality (i.e. don’t write it off based on one bad experience).

Yelp
This is so good. I ordered the brisket sandwich. It was $22 but came with so much meat I wasn't even mad. They serve it with pickles and slaw on the side and a small bbq sauce. The sandwich is on a poppy seed bun. It was honestly the best brisket I've ever had (and I order brisket everywhere). I watched them build it and noticed they combined the sandwich meat with cuts from the thicker and smaller portions of the brisket when slicing so the dryer parts were mixed with the really moist parts. Brilliant. The bbq sauce was heavily seasoned and more on the savory side. I especially think you'd enjoy this brisket if you are a fan of pepper (and even if you aren't like me.) due to the rub on it. I'll absolutely be back!

Yelp
I think BBQ makes everyone happy, honestly there is a BBQ style for everyone as well. We all have our favorite style, process, particular wood for smoking, sauces and seasonings. So on my recent tag along trip to DC with my hubby, he took me to Union Market for lunch. He decided on BBQ and got enough for us to share. Brisket and the pulled pork... I can talk sides until the cows come home, everyone has sides, but sides don't make the meal, they accompany it. The brisket was tender, tasty and had that nice fatty part that I adore, like that's the first part I eat, I really enjoyed this a lot. The pulled pork was very good, but lacked some flavor, not sure if it was just me, but the BBQ sauce helped make the flavor pop!! Hubby was very happy and has eaten here before and enjoys that the portions are hearty and delicious. When I am back in DC, I will for sure hit 2fifty's again!

Yelp
2fifty's was a pleasant surprise at the Union Market! Having lunch already, the hubs and I decided to go for a 'second round', and we're glad that we did! They wood-smoke all their meats in their own smokehouse, located in Riverdale Park, which I find pretty cool! Their menu offers meats by the pound, sandwiches, trays, various sides, and drinks. Wanting to try a nice sampling, we opted to go for the Texas Trinity. This can be for a tray for two or for one, in which we went for the latter. This came with: +prime brisket - we had a combo of the lean and the fatty, in which the fattier one was so much better; hoping to get more of those! +pulled pork - this was juicy and good with the BBQ sauce +1 smoked sausage - I usually don't like sausages that come with a BBQ sampler, but 2fifty's version was SO DELICIOUS! It had a very nice kick to it, and so yummy! +choice of 2 sides - we went for the potato salad and the mac n' cheese; I really enjoyed the mac n' cheese as it was super cheesy and the pasta wasn't overly cooked or mushy! +a slice of Texas Toast +BBQ sauce +pickles & onions Staff here are super friendly and kind! There's online ordering available, but we just went up to the counter to order. A tasty spot, this was a good find. Definitely coming back for their smoked sausage! +smoked sausage! +mac n' cheese! +friendly & kind staff! +online ordering available +located inside Union Market +parking in Market lot

Yelp
Located in union market I saw brisket and I wanted to try it. I am a brisket lover. Small spot that has a new different options to get a taste of BBQ. The lady that took my order was very helpful and nice, service was really fast. I went the brisket sandwich that came on a poppy seed bun, side of pickles, coleslaw and bbq sauce. I got a side of mac n cheese and a drink. I am more of a lean brisket girl and the brisket was really fatty. The flavor was good and once I put the sandwich together it was decent. The Mac n cheese was way over cooked. The noodles were super mushy. If I wanted BBQ this wouldn't be my first choice.

Yelp
Awwww - it's a baby 2fifty's! For anyone who hasn't made it over to their smokehouse, it's a good preview of their classics. It's more of a greatest hits list with a platter and a couple sandwiches, but even then it's a solid eat for Union Market. I wanted ribs so I got the two plate with my friend. Their jalapeño sausage is actually my fav, and the ribs were solid too. The brisket was noticeably saltier than I remember from my pickup orders but was otherwise solid too. Love that their beans got bits of briskets in it and the slaw is solid. Their sauce has more of an acidic punch and is tomato forward - not my personal preference but it's still good! Also gotta show love for the fact they have employees from the deaf community - always up for inclusion. They got a QR code so no worries ordering - just file it online and they got your back right away!

Yelp
Mac and cheese was f*ing amazing. The brisket was delicious especially with their bbq sauce that I drizzled on top. The corn bread was great too. I love the order completely!!! I had the brisket, Mac and cheese, pickles, and corn bread. The slice of bread comes with the dish This order was sooo delicious . It wasn't spicy. It has a small kick at the bbq sauce. For anyone who doesn't it's just as amazing without the bbq sauce. 10 out of 10. The girls at the front were very kind , friendly service and helped me order this great dish that suited me. The location is inside the Union market place and it's very busy but very enjoy location. Outside seating.

Yelp
It was ok to me. I saw a segment of 2fifty's on the local news for Hispanic Heritage month, so I bookmarked it to try. On the segment, their food looked really good so I was eager to see the hype. I got brisket with a side of coleslaw. To me, the brisket needed some seasoning and I wasn't a huge fan of the sauce that it came with. In addition to the sauce on the side, I had them add spicy sauce on top of the brisket, but I didn't find that spicy at all. No heat, no pepper, no nothing and the coleslaw was not the best I had. It was palatable, but I could have opted for another side. I thought they had good service, and the employees were friendly. I personally wouldn't go back.

Yelp
A decent spot in DC for some Texas BBQ! They located inside of union Market so you can mix and match with all the other amazing vendors. The prices are a bit expensive, but I guess that's DC for you. It could be smokier and fattier but it's great if you're craving/missing some Texas BBQ. You get your pick between lean or moist and I loved combing the Mac and cheese with the brisket for a tasty combo.

Yelp
Before now, the best BBQ in the city was outside of it in Riverdale, Maryland. A husband-wife team sold brisket at the Riverdale Farmers Market before opening a brick-and-mortar nearby during the pandemic. With nods from local media and an already loyal fan base, 2Fifty Texas BBQ soared. Now they're bringing their brisket, ribs and sides to a stall at Union Market saving D.C. residents on gas driving outside of the city. Here's why you should go: 1) Food: Their meat is smoked and well prepared at their brick-and-mortar in Riverdale and delivered to the Union Market stall Wednesday-Sunday. You can't go wrong on any order, but their ribs and brisket are always homeruns. The sides are quality, including the pineapple. 2) Service: The owners and staff are very kind. They open at noon-8pm Wednesday-Sunday, but close once they sell out. Go early as they are popular. 3) Space: There are a few tables inside Union Market, but when the weather is nice, I recommend finding a picnic table outside or on the rooftop. If you love BBQ, you can find it right inside Union Market!

Yelp
While in Union Market, my fiancé and I had bbq from 2fifty's. My fiancé had pulled pork with a side of coleslaw while I had moist brisket with a side of mac n' cheese. All meats came with pickles and onions, bbq sauce, and Texas toast. The meat was tender and pulled apart. The mac and cheese was cheesy and delicious.

Yelp
Eh, was expecting much more from 2fiftys after all the hype. I imagine the MD location is a bit better...doesn't look like they make anything in DC. Menu is truncated for the union market location, they even have different websites and socials which makes things confusing. Ordering online was easy and it was ready when I got there. Tried a combo platter for two, and the pulled pork sandwich. Combo platter - ribs fall off the bone and were probably my favorite offering. Sausages were good, brisket was good but not perfect for me - the lean meat wasn't all that flavorful, relying on the super rich layer of fat, which is great but at times a bit overwhelming (and i love fatty brisket). Not a big fan of the sauce so didn't use much of it on anything. Sandwich was ok, but pricey at $17 without a side, and the pork wasn't out of this world. Sandwich needed sauce. Sides (cole slaw and potato salad) were average. They include a single slice of bread for a combo meal for two which was weird and 3 ribs (why odd numbers?). Pickles were good. Anyway, I'll try the MD location at some point but being closer to home isn't enough to get me to stray from fedpig for my bbq fix.

Yelp
I was excited to try this new bbq place after seeing how much of a success it was in Maryland. But I was slightly disappointed at the flavors overall. The brisket was great -- a good balance between the fattiness and lean meat. But for everything else, I think the flavors were just average with nothing too spectacular to make it stand out from other places. The service was fine but generally, the prices were high (then again this is Union Market. I would rate it a 3.5 - 4, hoping that it can continue to tweak its flavors.

Yelp
Ohh my worddd this brisket was the best. So tender and flavorful. We also got sides of Mac and cheese and corn bread. So much food. We now have leftovers. Yummm!

Yelp
Seems to be out of place as it's in a neighborhood but this is some awesome BBQ. The Wagyu Brisket was so tender and moist and so were the pork ribs. I can't wait to go back to try the Dino beef rib. My fav BBQ in the DMV.

Yelp
While I definitely appreciate and advocate for the proliferation of Texas style BBQ across the country (see my review of Lewis BBQ in Charleston, SC), and there is no question that 2fifty's is attempting to do just that in a manner that exceeds other efforts in the DMV, I don't think we're there just yet. I do love that they use prime brisket, I wouldn't be surprised if they source post oak to cook their meats (though it didn't taste like it to me), and perhaps they custom-built their smoker. I only visited their Union Station location so it's hard to opine on all of this based on admittedly a singular visit. But something just seemed... off. The fatty brisket isn't as soft, luscious and velvety as those offerings I can find across the state of Texas. I wasn't enamored at all with the ribs and the sides were marginal. I heard that I missed out on the sausage, but I wonder whether my palate is just so used to particular flavors in Texas that anything doesn't match it is considered substandard. But yet I like DCity so I think it's something else. End of day, if you are looking to experience Texas BBQ without hopping on a plane, then this is a rendition that attempts to stay as close to the model as anything I have found in the DMV. But I still think you need to come to Texas to receive the full experience.

Yelp
Brisket is the best I've ever had outside of Texas, and I've been looking. Tender, juicy, great smoke ring- lord I think Jesus himself made it that's how good it is.

Yelp
Now I love this place. But recently my coworkers and I ordered from the union market location....which isn't a bad location. But I can see an increase in revenue if a food truck was available. Amongst our large order were (2) separate 1/2 lb order of ribs. After unpacking we thought we missed an order. We called to verify only to find out they combined the 2 orders because it was equally a pound. After not really being provided a solution I gave up Now imagine having to explain that order to the 2 workers...with an odd number of pieces. I just don't think the assumption should be made that it's ok to combine an order like that . Especially when there is an 2 can eat option but hasn't been chosen. We will more than likely continue to order from the Riverdale location.

Yelp
The most amazing Texas BBQ this side of the Mississippi. The Brisket is always perfectly smoked, moist flavorful and juicy. Ribs delectable and when the have the Pork Belly do not hesitate, not always on the menu it is a special. That Dino Beef Rib will feed 2-3 people.

Yelp
I was at Union Station -Washington DC, on a weekend and I thought I would try this place. I am giving it 4 Stars because the brisket was unbelievable. One of the best I've had in years. The coleslaw was mediocre and when I go back, I'll try another side. This small venue seems to have it it's act together. I didn't wait long for the sandwich and it was well prepared. I did order a Diet Coke in a 16 oz. bottle but it was a warm. Not cold at all. Beyond those little flaws , I suggest trying this place. It was a little pricey for 20 bucks a sandwich but that's like everything else in Washington DC. I was surprised to see the sales tax was 10%. Then again, it is Washington DC and that's you would expect. So with the tip it was a 20% markup. I would probably visit Washington DC more often and support these type of venues Unfortunately, the District has way too many MONEY GRABBING speed and red light cameras everywhere throughout so I avoid driving through town whenever possible.

Yelp
Everyone knows that Union Market is one of the places you should check out while in DC, but now I'm telling you all that 2fiftys is the place to go! Honestly did not think we would be eating barbecue here, we even made a couple laps just in case we saw anything else we liked, but always ended up back at 2fiftys. Our expectations? Honestly we did not expect much, but wow we were surprised. I believe we got the Texas Trinity (which was good enough for the 2 of us). 1/2 lb Prime Brisket, 1/2 lb Pork Ribs, and 1 Smoked Sausage + your choice of two sides. Comes with Texas Toast, bbq sauce and pickles & onions. We chose the potato salad and corn bread as our sides. First off, the presentation blew our minds, didn't think barbecue could be presented so pretty. Now, the MEAT, wow, amazing. Like I said, we were very surprised with how GOOD the food was. The brisket melted in your mouth, the sausage had a nice kick to it, the ribs were so juicy, cornbread was soft and moist and everything all together was just a heavenly meal. If you're around the area, please check this place out!

Yelp
Hea-ven-ly. Super rich texture. A perfect combination with fat. Nothing overpower the others. Just done right. Side dishes compliment meats marvelously. It is a such a nice addition to DC. While my dear Federalist Pig is on the dry side, 2fifty's is wet. Wit these two, I don't need to go Texas to fix my needs.
google avatar

Piotr L.

Yelp
I gave them about 4 tries and have tried all of their offerings so far. There is something missing with the brisket is moist but I think it loses a smoky bite from the transport from the flagship shop. The ribs I think hold up better in transport with the meat being perfectly bite tender and retain their flavor. The pulled pork is... aite? When it's dry and lean it really stands out, but when it has the right amount of fat it works great. The sauce is sour and smoky with a step too little heat on it in my opinion, the lack of other sauce options affect my thoughts on the sauce they have on hand. The sides are aite, coleslaw is coleslaw, not too much vinegar and the veggies are fresh and have good crunch, the potato salad much the same, finally the pineapple is a pretty desert and palate cleanser.

Matthew B.

Yelp
The first time I got the pulled pork sandwich, it was fantastic and a healthy portion for $17. However, the second time I ordered it, more than 50% of it was pure fat and was extremely disappointed. On the bright side, they offered a refund and open to giving another shot!
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
Extremely rude and unhelpful staff. For a new restaurant at Union Market, they sure don't seem to care about building a good reputation or customer base. Online ordering system doesn't align with the hours of the restaurant, the store will randomly close even if you have ordered ahead of time, and if you arrive any time after 6 PM (even though they close at 8 most nights), prepare to be treated like a huge inconvenience by the staff for asking for a fork or to-go bag. This is because they just want to leave. BBQ wasn't even good enough to justify the attitude. You've got tons of options at Union Market, and other BBQ choices, don't waste your money here.
google avatar

Joe G.

Yelp
Go here! Not only the best BBQ in DC, this place is as good if not better than the most high ranked places in Central Texas. It's perfection. Cooked on offset pits using live oak fire, it's authentic as you get. The sides were all fantastic. The staff are extremely friendly.

Kalin B.

Yelp
Some of the best barbecue I've had around the DMV area! The prices aren't bad for what you get (typical barbecue prices) and good potions. There's some negative comments about the meat being "too fatty" but that's what makes it stand out from the other dry BBQ!

Patricia C.

Yelp
I was at Union Market and this was my first experience with Texas BBQ. I was not disappointed. The brisket was tender and ample and the sauce was good. I will go back

Matt P.

Yelp
Best bbq in the area. Brisket is the only thing you need. It is magical. Pulled pork sandwich also fantastic.
