How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Zermatt, Switzerland

"The highest hotel (and restaurant) in the Swiss Alps where dining comes with panoramic mountain views; the on‑site restaurant emphasizes Swiss‑centric dishes made with local ingredients, with examples such as salmon trout, fondue and pork cordon bleu, making it a destination for both scenery and cuisine." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Absolutely beautiful hotel! We loved our stay. We really wished there were more areas to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air, aside from the restaurants. We spent a significant amount of time in our room between hikes and dinner since the wooden benches are pretty uncomfortable and hard to come by. I also wish there were alternative methods for getting back to Zermatt when the train is down. We were stranded for 3.5 hours and had to rearrange all our transportation for the day.

Great service quality, impressive view towards legendary mountains straight from the room, milky way and stars clearly visible, good quality food at over 3000m altitude. Could be even more perfect with a humidifier in the room.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for a nights stay, being that close to the Matterhorn at night and first thing in the morning was magical. The food and service was excellent and the staff were all friendly and welcoming. Just be aware that when booking this hotel you still have to pay for your ticket on the train to get to the location and that adds some significant additional cost and so you need to plan accordingly. For this reason I would recommend a single nights stay rather than multiple nights unless you are hiking the mountains over a few days and want to use this as your base. The observatory is open in October and December if you are looking to take advantage of that.

Terrible experience with dinner and breakfast, in particular the food staff, and the low quality of food for such an expensive stay. No vegetarian menu offered for their included dinner for my vegetarian wife. We were not asked about dietary restrictions either prior or at check-in. You're better off just visiting via train and staying elsewhere at lower elevation and lower price, and probably better food.

By far one of the most amazing hotels my husband and I have stayed at. The view from the rooms is unbeatable and it’s great to have the area to yourself after the last train runs and for sunrise. Dinner and breakfast were excellent. My complaint is that they blast music outside and the speakers were right under our windows and we could hear it even with them shut. After dinner around 7 PM when all visitors but hotel guests were gone I talked to the concierge and asked her to turn it down or off because we weren’t able to rest even with the windows shut and she said she would but it didn’t. Finally after 10:00 when it was still blaring I called again and was insistent that they turn it off because we couldn’t sleep and she finally did. Considering there were no longer any visitors besides hotel guests at 7:00 and no one was seated outside, there was no reason for music to be blasting and disturbing guests.

Please note this review is based on the service received, not the hotel facilities themselves, as we were unable to stay. My mother made a reservation for 20 April 2025 (booking under the surname Yu) as a special trip to celebrate my birthday. Unfortunately, due to the severe snowstorms at the time, it became impossible for us to reach the hotel. We only realized this on the day of travel when attempting to purchase tickets for the cogwheel train. Upon calling the hotel, we were informed that access was indeed blocked—however, we had received no prior communication about this from the hotel until we proactively reached out. The staff appeared understandably overwhelmed by the situation. We were assured that a refund process would be initiated over the following weeks, which we accepted given the exceptional weather conditions. Since then, however, it has been over two months and we are still waiting. My mother has contacted the hotel multiple times, only to be told to speak with Booking.com (through whom the reservation was made). We've since reached out to Booking.com on three occasions, and as of mid-July, no refund has been processed. Based on past experience, Booking.com has always handled issues promptly and transparently. This suggests the delay may be on the hotel's end. It’s now been nearly three months, and the refund—significant in amount—remains unresolved. While we fully understand that the situation in April was out of the hotel’s control, the continued delay and lack of proactive communication regarding the refund is disappointing. We sincerely hope this can be resolved soon and that future guests are provided with better updates in similar circumstances.

It might be the most expensive 3-star hotel in the world, but it's worth it. Included dinner feels like high-end business class cuisine.

Yelp
This hotel is truly unreal. Prepare yourself for a longer review! I stayed here for one night in April 2022. Was it pricey? Technically yes, but also kinda not. I will explain in a moment! Getting to the hotel: You need to ride the Gornergrat to the hotel. This is not free and will add an extra $40ish CHF each way for everyone. When arriving during the winter time you will probably be on a train filled with a ton of skiers. Get comfortable for the 40 minute train ride and enjoy the views. They are incredible! Sit on the right side for the best views of the matterhorn when ascending the mountain. Once the train reaches the final station you will need to disembark and head to the hotel. I recommend wait a moment to let all the skiers off since you will probably have a few suitcases. Once you are off find the first set of elevators to take you to the hotels ground floor. Then enter the building to find the second set to get to the lobby. Things to do at the Hotel: Now this is the best part about this hotel. This hotel you want to book as an escape. There is not much up there and it is wonderful. They have Zooom which is a virtual reality experience. There is also a small chapel and a few gift shops. If you come in the winter you can ski right from the hotel down or in the summer you can go hiking. However even if you do not do any of those, my favorite area is above the hotel where you can see everything. They have a small lookout point that allows you to see all 29 peaks that surround you. Honestly an incredible place to see the stars. It is so quiet and such a great escape. Food: Now for food you have only 2 options. For lunch there is a cafe style food. However for dinner and breakfast they open their restaurant up for a great meal. Now included in the hotel rate is a 4 course dinner and a hot breakfast buffet. Honestly it was delicious and incredible! Rooms: Each of the rooms are named after one of the peaks that surround it. They will tell you the history of that peak and your room will include a rock from the peak. No matter where your room is, you will have a phenomenal view. Overall this hotel will always be one of the most unique hotels I have ever stayed at. 100% would stay here again.

Yelp
very basic food on the cafeteria side, they have an adjacent sit down restaurant. you visit for the views of the matterhorn and the valleys below.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the unique experience and the view of matterhorn from the hotel. Staff were very friendly. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who will be traveling to the area. One thing to be aware is that the altitude is so high that you might get mountain sickness. My husband had headache and I had short of breath pretty much the entire time, but those were small price to pay for the fantastic experience we had!!

Yelp
A unique hotel with a fantastic view. Breakfast and dinner are included and are great. The price is high but considering the unique location and meals included it was worth it to me. Be aware you will need to take a train to this hotel and restaurant. The last train leaves Zermatt at around 730pm. If you miss this there is no way to get to your hotel. The train is 30 minutes long and you will need to pay. They do offer multi day passes and discounts for a Swiss travel pass. A 3 day Gornergratt pass for 2 people with the Swiss pass discount was around 380. Make sure you factor in this cost. I did not when booking.
