Hubby and I got to return here for lunch this past weekend. We'd just left Vino Vino's Turkeyfest and had sampled roughly 35 wines in an hour on an empty stomach. We needed some spongy bread STAT, and I was a little thrilled (enhanced by tipsy) to walk back into this place, one of our old haunts "back in the day".
In our salad days, I was working right across the street at Bailey Square taking xrays and hubby was the UPS driver for this area. This was back when I had A WHOLE HOUR for lunch and I could eat carbs at will with no repercussion, so we ate here probably once a week for years. All the staff knew us and the owner, Eddie, would always flirt just enough with my hubby in his wittle brown shorts to make him embarrassed and yet, somehow flattered. I would always get a sammie and fries or a chicken or tuna salad salad. I remembered them to have some of the best fries in town so I was interested to see how today's food would hold up to my admittedly rose tinted memories.
This weekend I got my old favorite, the Italian Sandwich and fries and hubby got the Rueben. That sandwich rocked my tipsy world, loaded as it was with several Italian cold cuts and cheeses and served on an olive oil and rosemary foccacia. Nothing too fancy about it but delicious. And, yes....the FRIES! Perfectly cut, these ain't your wimpy shoestring variety nor your bulky steak fries. They are just riiiiight and seasoned perfectly. Just like I remembered. As a bonus, they also have yummy crispy pickles! Hubby really enjoyed his Rueben as well.
I was so happy to see quite a few lunch diners here as, for me, I sometimes forget this little gem is tucked away here. Still the service has always been friendly and prompt. Even back in the day, lunch here would still leave us with 15 minutes to spare, uh, inspecting packages in hubby's UPS truck :)
Definitely a place to put back on my radar when in the area. The food is great and the memories make me all warm n fuzzy inside (wine helps :).
Btw, there's parking in the back! (that's what he said....)
