10 Best Places for Live Music in Dublin | Condé Nast Traveler

"Despite its origins as a railway goods handling station for the adjacent Dublin Port, Ireland’s largest indoor arena is a decidedly modern venue, with a capacity of 23,000; it was transformed into its current role in 1988 before being completely redesigned in 2008. This is the city's only arena-sized venue, so it's where you'll go to take in big-budget acts like One Direction, and large-scale performances à la Cirque du Soleil. Our advice when it comes to seating? Pick up seats in the central column of the first row, unless you're into that whole mosh pit thing—and if you are, be aware that it's restricted to those over the age of 14." - Fionn Davenport

Google
I really like this venue for live music. It's big enough to host some great shows, but small enough that pretty much any seat offers a great view of the stage.

Christian Plosenko

Google
3Arena is genuinely an impressive place! A few months ago I went to see my favorite singer/Artist, Tyler, The Creator! The show was SO SO SO amazing and the seats i was in were top tier low-key! The staff were also great and gave me directions to my seat and i easily found it! Loved it so much!

Natasha D'souza

Google
Had been here for Pitbull concert. Staff were helpful and polite, food and drink were averaged price, toilets were decent. Overall good experience. People tend to often get drunk but staff handles it well so it's grand. It's an indoor venue so that's a plus as well.

Google
Visited last week to see Tate Mcrae, we were standing relatively close to the front and the view was great. The staff and security were friendly and professional. They made sure to hand out cups of water to everyone in the crowd as it was fairly hot in the venue. The prices are what you'd expect at a venue in Dublin so can't really complain. The amenities were clean and tidy. We didn't have any issues and had a really enjoyable night.

Google
Best concert experience for a venue ever. They are the gold standard by far. They organized and calmly walked us to the stage , where everyone was able to get to their desired spots with ease. They seeked out the crowd with cups of water to make sure everyone was well hydrated, and showed everyone the upmost respect and courtesy. I’ve been to 100’s of shows around the world , and 3arena is top tier.

Google
On the positive side, I’d like to note the convenient layout of the hall, even from the upper seats, everything is easy to see. However, it often gets very hot inside, and my friends have complained about the same issue. I understand that a large number of people gather there, but that doesn’t change the fact that the ventilation is poor. At summer events, this becomes a serious problem.

Google
Great venue with excellent sound and views from nearly every seat. Easy to get to by public transport. Overall concert experience is top-notch.

Nitin Binawara

Google
It's a great concert arena, closed one which is suitable for all weather. Great location, nearby car parking and efficient transportation from both luas and bus.

Yelp
This was a fab venue for a recent concert. Not too large, good sound and great seating so everyone has a good view of the stage.

Yelp
BRILLIANT VENUE, lots of big artists, I saw Melanie Martinez's Trilogy Tour here in September, great costumer service, HUGE VENUE, we were in standing and we were AMAZED!

Yelp
Well that's that then, Dublin's 3 Arena was our last concert night and it was a magical place that provided us with a magical night. Damn it; done too soon. Mr Diamond has left us once again. We sang tunelessly and danced clumsily at three concerts but other pressures prevented us from doing more. This Arena was simply the very best. Neil's connection with this audience crackled. It was tangible from beginning with In My Lifetime to America at the end. They really loved the guy from the millisecond he appeared. He performed for over 2 hours and at 75 he's an inspiration, no sign of old bones here. The seating was the most comfy of the 3 venues and our posteriors appreciated it. The acoustics too were streets ahead of Manchester & Belfast. The arena staff were much more sociable here but Manchester was tough. Tough for the audience as well as Neil and his 13 strong band. He spoke about the 22 fallen angels, kids murdered just a few months ago. The youngest was only 8 years old, not allowed to live. What a price to pay just for going to a music concert. 250 people were injured, 23 critically with life-changing, life-shortening injuries. This could have been you or me or any of our kids but Manchester's message is loud and clear this evil won't stop us. May those who can never forget those murdered and injured innocents in Manchester, Paris & Las Vegas sleep well and find some peace of mind.

Yelp
Saw U2 here and it was the first time they played their hometown in 26 years or so. Talk about bucket list, this indeed was it. The sound was impeccable and the arena layout is that of any concert venue in its category. Of course drinks and food were astronomically priced but at the same time I'm not one to attend a concert to eat and drink. I'm there for the performance. To see a band as incredible as U2 and might I add my all-time favourite band in their hometown was truly a dream come true. Though I didn't have to deal with being on queue, it seemed to move quickly for those who did. In addition, the arena is one of the cleanest I've seen. Even the bathrooms were near spotless with thousands of patrons stomping through.

Yelp
A far cry from the grotty (and beloved) Point depot. The O2 is a great venue for gigs of any sort, I've been to comedy, theatre and music events here and it works every time. Having the luas red line stop right outside is a godsend, the sort of facility a proper city would have!! Right, that's enough for now, i`m off to rock out to the melodic tunings of Def leppard and Alice Cooper this eve.... ...and that was last night, this morn my ear drums are shot to hell and it was worth every bit of it. Nothing funnier than being (and watching) middle-aged rockers try to recapture a bit of their youth while sipping a glass of Sauv Blanc and commenting on how clean the toilets are.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
I honestly can't believe how much this place has changed since the Point Depot. Not having lived in Ireland for quite a few years, going to the O2 last night was nothing short of a revelation. How things have changed!! This is a top notch venue, one we as Irish should be immensely proud of. Last year, it was actually the fifth best attended venue in world - even beating world-famous venues like Madison Square Gardens in New York! So what makes this venue so freaking good?! Firstly, I swear you can actually see the stage from anywhere on the floor. Being a small fry, I'm constantly struggling to see anything at gigs. (Why do all the 6fters always end up in front of me?!!) Now, don't get me wrong, it's no Brixton Academy (sloped floor!!! SLOPED!!! Is that the best idea ever?!! Why all venues don't do this, I'll never understand!), but it is excellently laid out and spot-on for small-fry visuals. Secondly, they've got some serious sound and lighting set up here. Really really fantastic quality. There's also no major queues for toilets as there are so many, and there are three bars on the main floor (with loads more on the other levels) so you don't have to wait to long for a bit of liquid refreshment (although it is a tad on the pricey side, I wouldn't be goin too crazy with the booze in there!) The face-lift on the venue itself has really rejuvenated the hold warehouse-looking space into a really beautiful piece of architecture - a perfect mix of modern / funky, with the old stone in the original building. All in all, it's an absolutely deadly spot. (Deadly as in good - for all those non-Irish out there!)
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
A really great music venue. Capacity is 9500 for fully seated gigs and 11500 with partial standing. The sound is excellent and the seats are comfortable. The only downside is that the bar stays open during the show so you spend too much of the show getting up off your seat to let people go to the bar. Drinks are not too expensive. They sell popcorn and hotdogs
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
Great place to see a concert! The biggest plus in my opinion is that it's easy to get in and out of the venue. The security/ticker takers moved everything along rather quickly, so I spent just a few minutes waiting on line and then finding a prime spot next to the stage. Leaving was also a breeze. Less than 10 minutes after the last song, I was already in a taxi heading home. Another nice thing was that there were tons of concession stands no matter which way I looked. So, it was easy to take a break and get a drink or two in the middle of the show. I should also mention that the crowds were phenomenal. If you're going to see a rock show and want to get a taste of some insane atmosphere (something you rarely see in the US these days, sadly), there's nothing better than being surrounded by 10000 headbanging Irish! Five stars!
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
Fabulous venue and very organized. Food is average and expensive as you would expect at a place like this. The ambience is great and there was plenty of staff around to manage the crowds. Would come back here anytime for a concert or other events :-)

Yelp
To anyone who was at the old Point Depot and who hasn't been at the O2: rest assured, the O2 is waaayy better than the Point. The Point was so named as it was constructed in an old railway depot, and as such was shaped like a big long and narrow shed, which is essentially what it was. This made for kind of shitty acoustics and if you were anywhere near the back, just forget about it, you're weren't really able to see anything. The new O2 is a building that was specifically designed for the listening of music, so there's something for a start. The new building is narrow and short, with the standing area below and tiered seating in a sort of amphitheater shape above. It was in these seats (the Audi Club, don'cha know) that I saw Bob Dylan a few weeks ago, and we were so close to the stage that I could almost count the wrinkles on his wizened forehead. The acoustics were pretty top-notch too. Located only a few minutes walk from town so punters can avail of public transport to get there and back, the O2 is very convenient to get to. All in all, a nice concert venue.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
My first gig in the new 02 last night, the former point depot has come along way from barn like point depot. The O2 is really impressive and its new look seems to be stripped down Industrial meets airport terminal. As Cathal says the new around the area is long and narrow with the main concert hall in high and amphitheatre like, with everyone getting a view and depending on the gig as seat. Was there to see Leonard Cohen and aside from the fact that the man is a legend, what a showman, the sound and atmosphere were great. Theres toilets and bars with overpriced drinks a plenty too and the venue itself is well run and managed to get 11,000 people out of the venue and out into the Dublin evening safely and with minimum fuss.
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
I've been to the 02 twice now and I can't remember the last time I was so impressed with something. First, I went to Girls Aloud which was fully seated and the venue looked amazing. We walked in - no crazy queues going through a maze of fences, you simply walked up to the door, scanned your tickets and in you go. We were greeted by the super helpful and really friendly o2 angels who happily brought us to our seats. One bad thing was that I hated their outfits - particularly the girls. But their enthusiasm made up for that! The way they have laid the venue out means you'd be hard pushed to have a bad seat. We were close to the middle and to the right of the stage, but it felt like we were in the front row. I can't recommend it enough!

Yelp
Great place for a concert. Girlfriend and I saw The 1975 while in Ireland and we had a great time. There was a huge crowd outside of the arena before the doors opened, but staff managed to get everyone in quickly and safely. We walked around the arena before the show and there literally was not a bad seat in the house. The show production and sound was excellent, even though we were in the balcony. Great job by all staff (and the band of course!) for making the experience an unforgettable one.
google avatar

Sile O.

Yelp
Three Arena is a large concert venue in Dublin. Very good public transport links with the Luas stopping literally at the door. Good organisation on entering and exiting the venue. Inside their are multiple snacks and drinks outlets on all levels. The only downside the upper level is a bit steep and their is no banisters or supports on the steps. Not a place to sit if afraid of heights.
google avatar

Ahmed A.

Yelp
I've been to the 3arena many a time over the past few years! I've experienced bands while seating and standing and have literally attended over a dozen concerts here. It's a pretty fantastic venue but I would agree with other yelpers that there is an issue with being able to see some bands while standing. I would consider myself slightly vertically challenged so this has been an issue on numerous occasions! Another major issue would be the venue price of booze. Two pints for €13.00. Pretty intense. Lastly the security is alright but not the best. I've seen a lot of people smoking indoors and what not and when I brought my sister to a one direction concert there (my eardrums are still recovering) there were people being crushed and pushed against railings so at one point the music was stopped. The size of the venue along with the great sound system, good seating options where you can see everything clearly ad massive screens save it though and is why I'm awarding 3 out of 5
google avatar

Emma G.

Yelp
Woohoo!! I love this place. I've been attending concerts and shows here since it was The Point Depot. The concerts are always excellent, the seating plan is well situated so it's easy to see the stage from anywhere in the arena. As with all places like this, the food and drink are expensive and because you can't keep the lids from the bottles, it's easy to waste €3 on a bottle of lucozade if someone knocks it over when they are drunk. It's definitely an excellent venue for concerts!
google avatar

Odeta K.

Yelp
Very great and friendly staff. Great staff during the Chemical Brothers concert really made the night great!
google avatar

Orla L.

Yelp
The arena is great. Really good layout that you can see from wherever you sit. The seats don't go up too high so you don't feel your in heaven when you sit there. Didn't find queues a problem and the toilets were well organised an unexpectedly clean. The sound is fab. My only negative is that it isn't bigger and tickets sell out fast. Little mix, I'm sorry!!
google avatar

Cristin L.

Yelp
I just about remember my first visit to the point depot.... it was a school tour to see the musical cats! It was just amazing... The renovation of the point was the best thing to happen to this venue. Everything is so much easier because of it! Toilets are so much easier to get to and less queuing time. Sound is much better too. Luas is an added bonus too. I dropped a star for the price of drink etc, but it always was and always will be expensive, won't it :(
google avatar

Gigi L.

Yelp
The O2 is my favorite indoor venue for a concert in Ireland. First of all, no worries if it rains - not a fan of wearing wellies and slopping around fields to see a show - no thank you! Secondly, there's pretty much no bad seat in the house. Weather you have a side view, front and center, up in the rafters, or trapped in the mosh pit, you can rock on and enjoy the show! Finally, the bars and bathrooms (not necessarily in that order) are conveniently located and there's so much space to mill around and enjoy the buzz before the show. I've attended two performances here and I certainly plan to return! Raise your hands and sing along! Flick your lighters -- uh, I mean smart phones! Rock on my peeps!
google avatar

Stephen D.

Yelp
What a great venue. Saw U2 there on Saturday. Not really a bad seat in the house given the semi circle design. Concessions could be better. No real food choices and probably the only place in Dublin that doesn't serve Guiness
google avatar

James A.

Yelp
The O2 is a high quality entertainment venue. I saw New Kids on the Block there a couple of months ago and was very impressed. (By the venue, not so much by NKOTB. Grin). The O2 is easy to get to. There's no parking but there are shuttle buses from St. Stephen's Green and Connolly station, or it's a short walk or cab ride from the city centre. The drink prices are lower than you would think, and there isn't a bad seat in the place. The acoustics are impressive too. Cabs can be hard to find after everyone pours out of the place. Walk round the corner onto East Wall Road, then down to Upper Sherriff Street and down there a bit and you should have no problems. In such a great venue, even Donnie Wahlberg with his shirt off isn't too hard to take!
google avatar

Paul O.

Yelp
The O2 Point 3 Arena Depot has undergone a lot of changes in recent years, not just in name. Compared to the old Point Depot, which was quite literally a massive shed, the 3 Arena is a purpose built venue for acts of many sizes and genres. I've seen stage shows, comedy acts, rock and metal bands, composers and many others here. Due to the design of the arena, you can easily see the stage from any seat in the house or on the floor. When they were thinking about the floor plans for the new building, they made sure to plan for 16,000 fans needing to use the bathrooms at the same time. Thankfully, this isn't a problem - there are plenty of bathrooms, and the queues move quickly. And of course, because there's a captive audience, refreshments are quite expensive, but at least they have people walking through the aisles, selling bottles of beer from their backpacks. What a fantastic idea!
google avatar

Jason D.

Yelp
Sound is amazing went to see lee evens roadrunner here and nearly died laughing Top venue the only reason i did not give it 5 stars is because the seats are very small i am 6"3 and found it very uncomfortable my knees hit off the chair in front of me it hurt after a while The girl i was with found the leg space between the seat very small to and she is only 5'5 Overall a good venue one hundred thousand times better than the old venue
google avatar

Mariam A.

Yelp
I went there with my husband to attend 'Michael Buble Concert', The night I still can't forget
google avatar

Marita T.

Yelp
The O2 is an excellent Live Entertainment Venue in the Dublin area. I would classify this as a small Arena style venue with a GA floor for most shows I've been to and seating in the bowl of the arena. This venue has a great sound quality and truly not a bad view from floor to top tier seating. The staff has always been extremely helpful and friendly, even in the most dire of situation. The location is great, located centrally on the Quays down by the Convention Centre & Docklands-with easy access to Luas. This venue is a go to for any show that you'd like to experience with a crowd.
google avatar

Christian P.

Yelp
Great venue to go for a concert. I have been there to see the Coronas and Imagine Dragons. The place is really well organized and loads of staff are there to take care of you. I have been to the VIP lounge as well and that is a nice place to go for a company party or a venue. I would say it fits up to 2-300 people.
google avatar

Lisa J.

Yelp
i went there last night and this venue is simply enormous with lots of levels, seats and bars. simply getting in the door is so much easier; i remember queuing for take that when it was the point depot and that meant going up and down barriers and more barriers but last night was so easy, we just walked up to the doors and straight in. once in there are lots and lots of stairs, grey metal corridors and the place felt quite cold and a little impersonal but i suppose they are dealing with thousands of people and everyone seemed to be moving along without hassle. i saw the xfactor show which i thought to be not as good as watching it on the TV. the singers seemed to lack in interest, remember Janet Devlin? well she came out and sang and hardly muttered 'Hello Dublin' before running back behind. i thought it was funny though that some kept saying how great Dublin was for voting them into the competition! i always thought Ireland did'nt have much say in the voting in the XFactor! but my 11 year old daughter enjoyed the show and that was the main thing.

Yelp
We flew in from Boston just to see Van Morrison in November and couldn't have been happier with 3Arena. It's really clean, well organized, and easy to get to. Van Morrison was slightly crotchety that night, but what else is new? Fab time.
google avatar

Yelp
I went to see my favourite transvestite marathon running comedian last night, Eddie Izzard at this spot. What a fantastic way to start a week through fits of giggles. One of the people in my group had a cracked rib from falling over her dog, seriously. It hurt her every time she laughed and she knew that ahead of the concert, now that is a fan perhaps sadistic in way ;) The last time I saw Eddie Izzard in concert was when it used to be call The Point but alas now everything is branded these days, in time I will be called Moët (I have delusions of grandeur). It's night and day with the difference in the old theatre to the present one. Anyone who has not been since it's renovation should try their best to get out there. Now any seat that you sit in gives you a view of the stage, it is a world class venue. The lightening was fantastic as was the huge screens surrounding the stage. Organisation is excellent and efficient, the staff are wonderful and patient. Complaints, I do have to gripe about the prices. I know, I know it's naive of me not to expect a huge markup but it still hurts. Bottle of water 3 euro (what galled me is a bottle of beer is the same price, didn't seem fair). Sandwich 5 euro Packet of M & M's 4.50 euro An evening with the genius that is Eddie Izzard in an amazing venue, priceless. I know you can groan out loud for that cheesy moment but I could not resist.
google avatar

Ellen O.

Yelp
I was here for the first time, since it has been converted from The Point Depot, for the Arcade Fire concert. It was mostly standing room. The seats above looked like they give you a good view of the stage and the standing space was grand. I was warned not to stand directly under the balcony of seating as people have a tendency to either deliberately or accidently spill drinks or drop items! There was plenty of beer and drinks on sale at expected more expensive but not extortionate prices. You can also pick up a new O2 mobile or avail of some of their services at the O2 shop if you are bored and looking for something to do! I can't understand why they don't have a cloakroom. Surely at €2 a pop someone could make a mint out of this service and frankly, especially at a standing concert, it is seriously inconvenient to have to hang onto a coat or a bag.
google avatar

edel n.

Yelp
I love this venue. I love the fact that there is a Luas from city centre which will get yo within shouting distance of the entrance. I love the seating arrangments in the venue, the bars and selection of foods available. The sound is great and it still manages to maintain that small venue feel. And now it has the Gibson Hotel smack bang next door.
google avatar

Brian J.

Yelp
My first real concert in Ireland and that with one of my great idols Mr. Carlos Santana himself. And must say,the O 2 is a really nice and good place for concerts and the staff there was very help full for a newbie like me. The reason for the 3 stars is very simple. How can a place in these times charge you 6 Euro for a Carlsberg pint, that is simply totally daft. But great concert and the toilets facilities was very nice. And leaving the concert no problem's very nice and friendly "guides" to show me Danish guest all the way to the Luas. Not the last time I have been there for a concert.
google avatar

Charlie S.

Yelp
Good prices, great venue and the Gorillaz concert.... A great party in itself. Drinks at a decent price, toilets easy to find, as were the exits. Very friendly once again, and the structure was very nice. A bit of a walk from the center of town (30min stroll). The Garda was all around the 02, and helpful. Recommend to get there 30-45min before show if you have tix at box office, just to be safe.

Karina C.

Yelp
I went to The O2 for the first time recently and I was very impressed. We were standing downstairs at the Depeche Mode concert and the whole experience was extremely positive. It's a comfortable venue with easy access to both the bars and toilets at all times. And while it was a sold out event, not once did I feel claustrophobic or squashed. Now maybe going to see someone like Miley Cyrus would be different. Depeche Mode fans are older and therefore more laid back at a gig!
google avatar

andy m.

Yelp
It was long overdue for the Capital to have an excellent, large capacity venue. Its great that they took The Point, which was an acoustically awful old barn and made it into something world class. The sound is really good whether you are standing up front or sitting at the back. Also, the access to the bars and toilets and handling of queues at them is great. The Luas to it has only sweetened the deal.
google avatar

Angela T.

Yelp
We were here for the Notre Dame pep Rally, and we had a great time. I would say all the seats had a great view of the stage, and the sound quality was excellent.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Now I'm may be biased when it comes to this venue, however I went to see Cirque du Soliel most recently (it was incredible) and as a patron I really like the venue! I went into the Blueroom bar, chilled out and had a drink having arrived early which is a nice place to spend time before the show. The staff are always helpful, especially if you're having trouble finding your seat or any of the amenities. I love that the arena is in an amphitheater-esque layout so you can see the stage from every seat, not like in the Point where you got stuck at the back or side of the stage and couldn't see anything! Its got a huge capacity but I don't feel claustrophobic or on top of other people when I'm there. All in all I think its a great venue, with a great layout, helpful staff and top notch acts! Oh and in response to the above request for a cloakroom, the venue has a capacity of upwards of 14,500 people, so to be fair it would be logistically impossible to cater for even half that number in coats and bags not to mention the problems arising from lost tickets at the end of the evening!
google avatar

Linda M.

Yelp
Just attended one of the best concerts I have been to. The 3 arena aka Point Depot is fantastic. Amazing sound quality and stage views from everywhere in the venue. Toilet facilities are great. Bar queue moved along nicely and the whole look and atmosphere is spot on. When bands are charging an arm and a leg to see them...rest assured you will be able to see and hear them at this venue! Not a bad position anywhere.

Yelp
i go to the O2: Three Arena A LOT! was at Spandau Ballet a few months ago and just back from Fleetwood Mac. i even booked Dixie Chicks for next year. and i can never understand when i see the criticism some people have. someone said it was badly signed and hard to get into? its on your ticket and there are massive signs on every entrance. its impossible to not know where you are going, you just look up, or ask someone. i have always found the staff to be not only helpful be downright friendly. i don't know any of them personally but i always have a good laugh with the security staff on the way in and the staff at the counters are always in great spirits even when they are under insane pressure with 4 thousand odd people before a gig. so well done to all of them, i think you all do a great job. Anyway, "Fleetwood Mac" were awesome. i haven't been in there before when it was all standing all the way back to the bars, and i think its a great idea. the atmosphere was electric and i didn't see anyone not enjoying themselves. and to anyone giving out about people going to the bar during the gig......Really? its Fleetwood mac? maybe you thought it was a play? but i went to see a rock concert, so i had a drink. i recommend the three arena to everyone if you want a good concert, I've yet to have any bad experience here!!!
google avatar

Wesley W.

Yelp
The 2 is a great venue to see gigs live. No matter where you are seated, you have a great view of the stage. The sound system is amazing and one of the best in Europe. I personally like the fact they have multiple bars throughout so when you need a drink, you never have to fight a huge queue to get one.
google avatar

Nusheen D.

Yelp
Great venue that is large, but somehow still intimate. I had the pleasure of attending Saltimbanco (Cirque du Soleil) here and can't imagine a more satisfying experience; can only imagine how great a concert would be here.
google avatar

Tobias A.

Yelp
Went to see Eddie Izzard there. Well, it is a nice arena, and if you have been to more you can judge if they are good or not. It is a little bit like a labyrinth - really it is, but I've seen worse. But when it comes to the arena itself, the toilets and the bar/restaurant system, it is top notch.
google avatar

Lynn A.

Yelp
I do like this arena - i wish it didn't keep changing names. It's extremely expensive for food or drinks though. I like that at most music events you can see the stage even from the bar on the ground floor.

Yelp
I went to o2 for the wrestling last week great staff very well run by goodies b4 u go in, greatbsitting areas parking good not to dear for the time we where on there, greay fun nite was had by all !
