I need to first preface that Kansas City BBQ has overall been a wash with me, and I live here. So let's get that outta the way by saying I have very low standards for local BBQ in general.
When I do venture out to a place that has gotten some notice, I try to order a few different things on the menu so that my view is not tarnished by one thing, which I did.
We ordered a couple of appetizers (the pretzels w/ beer cheese and the loaded tots)
The cheese was lacking in flavor, I mean, it had some. I'm just not sure what it was (normally, there is a very specific flavor associated with beer cheese, and this was not even in the ball park) but It reminded me of bland Mac and Cheese served in an old folks home the pretzels were fantastic though.
Now leading to the Tots, which overall, nothing to write home about. They had pulled pork, which was tender but also lacked any flavor other than a small smoked flavor, which was disappointing cause it's normally one of the better meats here locally.
I ordered the two meat plate with ribs and brisket, the ribs were absolutely amazing they had flavor and that fall off the bone with PROPERLY RENDERED FAT, which is hard to do I guess in Kansas city the brisket was well cooked but ultimately met the same fate as the pulled pork.
The fire roasted street corn was just awful. It tasted like hot mayo corn with tajin, and the Mac and Cheese matched the flavorless pit as the beer cheese.
We got the salad, which came in an unusually large dog bowl with turkey... the turkey had some good flavor but was ultimately dry, so it was OK but not great.
The sangria was in my girlfriends words, "tasted terrible."
Overall, the service was good and attentive, and the atmosphere is about what you would expect of a BBQ joint, casual.
Overall, other than the ribs, everything fell the same way Kansas city BBQ normally does, it requires sauce to be edible (which is the same as putting steak sauce on your steak, if you have to do it, the cook did a crap job) and was as disappointing to me as I was to my parents before they put me up for adoption.
Edit: I was just informed that the corn was made and tasted exactly like it should have, so I guess that's just a me problem.
