The Best Barbecue and Brewery Pairings in Kansas City, MO - AFAR

"A Liberty brewery offering unfussy session beers—examples include a Stick’em Up Stout (a local-history–themed name) and a lighter Civic Duty ale—frequently enjoyed alongside on-site barbecue and on a roomy outdoor patio." - Pete Dulin

Excellent choice for some Kansas City BBQ. Seated quickly, cold drinks, inviting atmosphere, and fantastic food. Nothing pulls you in quicker than the smell of good BBQ. I couldn't help myself but to try the Brisket, Pork Belly Burnt Ends, and the ribs based off the recommendations of friends and the bar tender. And of course nothing pairs better, in my opinion, with BBQ better than some Mac and cheese, which did not disappoint. The layout of their dining area is setup so you do not feel over crowded. Sitting at the bar the service was top notch. The ribs were fall off the bone perfect. The pork belly burnt ends were candy. Perfectly crisp and packed with flavor. And the brisket was well prepared. It is worth the stop, lunch, dinner, special occasion or simply visiting. It is also placed in downtown Liberty and it is hard not to enjoy the area itself and explore the downtown area before or after your indulgence of this great BBQ.

This place is great! We went in for lunch. I ordered the sliced brisket sandwich with corn. My wife ordered the sausage sandwich with fries. The brisket was excellent. It had great bark and rendered fat. The brisket was cut thick. It melted in your mouth and the flavor was good. My only critique is that the brisket lacked that wood smoke flavor. The corn was terrific! My wife loved the sausage sandwich. The sausage is made in house and had a really good taste and flavor. The fries were fried in beef tallow and was excellent! They had just the right amount of seasoning. My wife and friend got a flight of beer. They enjoyed all the flavors and walked out with a couple of six packs.

Fantastic BBQ! First time visiting and we were pleasantly surprised. We had the. 2 meat plate with burnt ends, sliced brisket and another with polish sausage and pork belly burnt ends. Sides were spicy Cole slaw and baked beans. Also had the cheese curds which were spicy too. Meat was spot on and the sides were terrific! We will definitely be eating here again.

First time trying 3Halves. Pretty good. Pork belly burnt end sandwich: Not bad, the burnt ends were cooked a little longer than I’m used to encountering with pork belly so they had taken on a little bit of a bacon flavor. Iowa Tenderloin sandwich: as big as you would expect it to be and of course you’ll be taking leftovers home unless you like to eat triple portions of food in one setting. Baked beans: these are great with huge chunks of brisket mixed in. Street corn: also good with a nice street elote type sauce they put on them. Fries: gotta do better here. Not much seasoning, sort of cold and stale. Overall, we’ll probably come back to try more sometime.

WE LOVE 3 Halves off the Historical Downtown Liberty Square!!! NOT only do they have great, friendly service, an awesome patio, YUMMY food, a cool bar and atmosphere, WE chose to host our oldest daughter's high school graduation party in the 3 room. IT WAS amazing, we had the best and attentive server and fun was had by all. ALWAYS try to support local and go try them today!!! You can thank me later! Thank you so much for a great party!!!

Google
The meats are so juicy and full of flavor! The pasta salad is absolutely amazing—out of this world, even! The ribs were incredibly tender, falling right off the bone and juicy as can be. Definitely a BBQ must-have!

Thank you for making my St Patrick's Day great. I had the pulled pork nachos for lunch and loved them! I asked my waitress Stacy for a recommendation to take home for dinner tonight and she told me to get the brisket dip. I'm glad she did. Great customer service and food.. all in one. I'll be coming back

Google
Amazing BBQ and really good people. John does a great job with the BBQ and Bucky slays it back in the brewery. You will not be disappointed when you come here. Burnt Ends and Brisket are a must-try. The smash burgers are insanely delicious as well. Every once-in-a-while they might have a special item on the menu so always ask :) .

Yelp
What a nice place! I am glad we made the drive out here. We found this place because we are knocking out the places on the KC Pub Pass and my fiancé wanted BBQ as well as beer. That only pointed to one place! They have an incredibly deal called the Meat Mile, which is said to feed 2-4 people. We were very hungry that day and managed to eat it all, but I imagine on a normal day it could be shared with more people. When we walked to in there was live music going on up front. The hostess politely asked if we wanted to listen to music, we didn't, so she showed us to a much quieter back room. I was very happy with this as I was a little disappointed thinking it was going to be very loud when we walked in. Several other people went past that area to some additional seating outside, but we didn't go see what that looked like. The best foods for me were hands down the turkey, the Mac and cheese, and the street corn. If we were to do the meat mile again, we would double up on all three of those. The pulled pork was good, but there was so much per serving, we didn't need to double up. I can't eat beef so I can't review the brisket. I had one burnt end, which was tasty, but I'm not a fan of fatty meats.

Yelp
We just had a delightful BBQ meal at 3 Halves but the highlight of the day was our server Jesse. His conversation and upbeat personality made the meal an extra special experience. Now to the food. I had a half slab and my wife had the pulled pork which were both superb. A special thanks to Jesse, from Chicago, who made us feel so welcome. Wishing him the best in his future.

Yelp
A neighbor of ours back in Indiana recommended this place. Well worth the visit. Good beer, better barbecue! Everyone in our family was happy. The sliced brisket was a big hit and I loved my burnt ends. Great beers too! This is a must visit if you're in the Liberty area. And they're located right near the Liberty town square. Lots of great little boutique shops.

Yelp
Kansas City bbq great find thanks fellow yelpers. A little outside Kansas City limits is this great bbq spot with many great options. They are also a brewery and wish we had more time to explore all of there beverage options. It was a busy Sunday inside and many happy full faces around. Service was pretty prompt despite how busy it was.

Yelp
Came up here to Liberty and checked out 3 Halves BBQ. A cool little spot. There is plenty of seating, kind of crunched in but it's really not that bad...it's a cool set up. The workers are great and the service was enjoyable. The BBQ was pretty good. Not expected in a small town. I drove here to specifically try out their burnt ends. I will say their burnt ends are better than their brisket IMO. The prices were steep. I can't remember the exact prices but I know a 1/2lb of burnt ends was around $18 or more. That's an insane price hike! They're good but they are pricey. Great BBQ, great restaurant. If you're in Liberty and want BBQ I'd suggest going. It's not the best in the area but no where near the worst. It's above average and I'd be surprised if you left unhappy!

Yelp
Worst service ever and expensive for the care you get. Avoid! Waittess rude and condescending. Needs work on customer service . Food and beer good but certain help is terrible.

Yelp
Food was delish and fresh!. The 1st time I came they were too busy to serve us ..it was on a Saturday night around 8. ...they told us that if we didn't have a reservation that they couldn't get us a table (3adults and 2kids) so we came back during the week and the food was great! My only advice is maybe call in advance on the weekend!

Bambi B.

Yelp
Our favorite place in Liberty. Best beer and BBQ in the area. If you are here out of town, we highly recommend this awesome brewery.

Yelp
The BBQ here is outstanding. Highly recommended. The server was attentive and quick. This is the perfect atmosphere for a speedy and really good lunch. I wanted to take a photo of the food, but it didn't last long enough to do so. A+

Yelp
Decent, if not great, food and beer. I stopped drinking but recall the beer to be quite good and that the brewmaster formerly worked at Cinderblock, home of what was my favorite IPA. The service is generally quite good but suffers when the crowd is unplanned for large. Yet, their attitudes are generally good and the food comes quickly. As for ambiance, the outdoor seating area and front room bar area are very good. Monday nights is an open mic night for local and other musicians ranging from beginners to seasoned, folk to rock, and otherwise pleasing to great. We spent three hours outside last Saturday and had a wonderful time. Check it out and, if you're curious for history, come early and explore Liberty's and stay later across the street at the Corner Bar, a standard in town since WWII. Liberty, more than a town, it's a feeling.

Yelp
Great food, friendly staff, and it has that relaxed, but upbeat friendly atmosphere. Small town at its finest and burnt ends & ribs to dye for.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Was visiting Kansas City for work, and this was one of the breweries that I was told to check out. Swung by on a Monday evening, which just happened to be open mic night. Several good performers that played that night, definitely could tell it was a lot of locals and some repeat performers. Great ambience! I chose to have one of their IPAs, which was pretty tasty, and also had their pork nachos. The nachos were a huge for the full order, and they had ambled delicious, pulled pork on top, along with cheeses, scallions, hot jalapeños, and they all blended very well for a delicious taste would definitely come back here again

Yelp
I love BBQ and my wife loves Tenderloins, so we had not been to this place and decided to give it a try. I had the two meat platter with Brisket and Burnt Ends. The brisket was nice and tender, but the BBQ Sauce ruined it for me. The sauce is just not good compared to other places in the Kansas City area. I know that Burnt Ends should have a little bit of fat on them, but 3 out of the 4 chunks I had were ALL fat. My wife ordered the Tenderloin and the portion and thickness were fine, but it was WAY over seasoned with pepper and other seasoning that made it very spicy. She was very disappointed by this and made the decision to toss the rest when we arrived home. I don't think we will go back. The service was outstanding however.

Yelp
First walking into this place, the atmosphere looked clean and welcoming, but the food awful. Our cheese curds came out cold and still frozen in the center, I ordered the meat mac & cheese, and the noodles were not done and the meat was dry. My friend ordered a hamburger and the bun was harder than the table we ate at. I simply cannot agree with the overall high rating of this place. The weight staff enjoyed congregating together more than serving the customers.

Yelp
So impressed with this place!! Wow everything was so great. The ribs had amazing flavor and the meat was so tender and juicy. Didn't even need bbq sauce! Burnt ends were amazing. Even the sides were great. The Mac and cheese was so good! The cheese curds had the perfect cheese pull. Wow. What a cute place! No bad things to say!

Yelp
I need to first preface that Kansas City BBQ has overall been a wash with me, and I live here. So let's get that outta the way by saying I have very low standards for local BBQ in general. When I do venture out to a place that has gotten some notice, I try to order a few different things on the menu so that my view is not tarnished by one thing, which I did. We ordered a couple of appetizers (the pretzels w/ beer cheese and the loaded tots) The cheese was lacking in flavor, I mean, it had some. I'm just not sure what it was (normally, there is a very specific flavor associated with beer cheese, and this was not even in the ball park) but It reminded me of bland Mac and Cheese served in an old folks home ‍ the pretzels were fantastic though. Now leading to the Tots, which overall, nothing to write home about. They had pulled pork, which was tender but also lacked any flavor other than a small smoked flavor, which was disappointing cause it's normally one of the better meats here locally. I ordered the two meat plate with ribs and brisket, the ribs were absolutely amazing they had flavor and that fall off the bone with PROPERLY RENDERED FAT, which is hard to do I guess in Kansas city the brisket was well cooked but ultimately met the same fate as the pulled pork. The fire roasted street corn was just awful. It tasted like hot mayo corn with tajin, and the Mac and Cheese matched the flavorless pit as the beer cheese. We got the salad, which came in an unusually large dog bowl with turkey... the turkey had some good flavor but was ultimately dry, so it was OK but not great. The sangria was in my girlfriends words, "tasted terrible." Overall, the service was good and attentive, and the atmosphere is about what you would expect of a BBQ joint, casual. Overall, other than the ribs, everything fell the same way Kansas city BBQ normally does, it requires sauce to be edible (which is the same as putting steak sauce on your steak, if you have to do it, the cook did a crap job) and was as disappointing to me as I was to my parents before they put me up for adoption. Edit: I was just informed that the corn was made and tasted exactly like it should have, so I guess that's just a me problem.

Yelp
This was a nice chill vibe dispite them being fairly busy. We actually really Enjoyed this place. It was one of the better margaritas I've had in a while. normally don't drink all of my drinks but this one was easy. They brew some of their own beer. You can even ask about purchasing some to go. We got their spicy cheese curds for an appetizer & they were good & so spicy! Their ranch was good & helped dial it down a notch. I ordered ribs with wasabi slaw & ranch beans. The wasabi slaw had the most subtle wasabi flavor. I'm going to try to recreate it at home. It was Really unique. The beans weren't my style but they weren't bad. They had more of a tomato base chili style flavor where I prefer more of the bbq style. But other than that, no complaints. The ribs were fall off the bone & a nice introduction to Kansas City :) My husband really enjoyed his pulled pork sandwich & loved the Mac & cheese! We definitely recommend if you're in the area.

Yelp
Reviewed this place back when it was "the jousting pigs" and found it to be a gross place with very bad meat but i wouldnt have ever called it bbq. What a relief to get to finally experience some of this amazing bbq that KC natives claim they have 'round these parts. (im from texas and always have high expectations) Husband and I had a bit of a wait when we came in the door. hostess was a little busy but once she caught a glimpse of us she visibly made efforts to get to us as quick as she could. Greeted with a smile and thats always nice. Enjoy seeing staff that are friendly and upbeat. There were families and couples so dont shy from bringing the kids. Not sure if they have high chairs so call first if you have a need. Our table was a really chilly and i understand the staff is rushing around and the kitchen is hot so they feel warm. but i have to say there were two families who both had a kid with a blanket. not sure if they were regulars and knew it was cold inside but they had the right idea. My husband's tenderloin was massive. and very tender. i tried some and it was wonderful. I asked our server which she recommended between the burnt ends, should i get beef or pork. She immediately insisted the pork was perfection and was she ever telling the truth. Hubs could not keep his hands off my burnt ends and helped me make quick work of them. Be warned they are filling. had to take my turkey home with me. Everything was delicious. They have alcohol for those that like and bar seating as well. table seating is low or high top tables. no booths. Couple of TVs Didnt use restrooms so cant report on those. Staff was great. and sweet tea was actually sweet and fresh as well. Place needed a little tidying up and seemed like it was half finished. the empty fridge case was an eye sore behind our table and since it was lit up it was super bright being empty in a darkly lit area of the restaurant. areas seemed crowded and our table was too small for all our food plus the table condiments and drink menu/paper towel. need larger tables even for two seater tables if you want all that stuff to fit. would not have been able to keep the chips and queso on the table with dinner had we decided to order it with the meal. Just something for owner to consider. Overall i really recommend. id love to see this place last and grow. That PORK. THOSE BURNT ENDS! thanks for dinner.

Yelp
Very cool place! Lots of great beer options. The food was excellent and the portions were huge so come hungry or be prepared for a to-go box. Service has been good both times. It's downtown area so parking can be challenging.

Yelp
We had an event May 10. Had a caterer hired that cancelled on Tuesday May 6. Called 3 Halves on Wed May 7 and they said Absolutely! Got all the arrangements taken care of on Wed. I should mention all this was done over phone and email as I am in WA state! The owner himself delivered our food right on time on Sat The food was amazing! Brisket was melt in your mouth. Pulled pork, coleslaw and Mac n cheese were soooo good!! And their regular and spicy sauces - yummmm Next time I visit MO I will be eating at 3 Halves!! Thank you for everything!!!

Bowen R.

Yelp
This bbq restaurant is a great place to eat some bbq, The Service was fast, helpful, and friendly!

Yelp
Checked out this spot with our pub pass. I was a bit disappointed they didn't have any seltzers since I'm gluten-free, and most places on the list have been able to swap my beer for a seltzer. I went with a lemon drop cocktail instead--it was decent. Our server was friendly and chatted with us a bit, which was nice. The vibe of the place was great, and I really enjoyed the music. Looking forward to coming back and trying the food next time!

Yelp
3 Halves popped up on my social media recently and left me intrigued so my next trip to Liberty I had to make a stop. I ordered the pork belly sandwich with the Korean sauce and it was mouth watering good crispy outer shell and tender on the inside it was a delightful sandwich. I asked for spicy sauce and it did not have any heat perhaps adding a grilled jalapeño as an option would be my recommendation to the Chef. My wife ordered the pork tenderloin which was enormous fit for a King but will make a great lunch meal the next day. Another bonus was the excellent weather so we sat outside with our doodle she enjoyed the tater tots. I can't wait to go back and try something else on the menu.

Yelp
Great BBQ. Cool ambience. Good selection of beers and cocktails. Excellent service.

Yelp
They served our last minute group of 21 on a Sunday afternoon with ease. The food, service, and ambience was great. Just what we needed after a long weekend of baseball.

Yelp
Friendly place and variety of beers and barbecue near the cute downtown area of Liberty

Yelp
Best service and food around. Beer is cold and tasty. Cool location. Definitely be going back soon.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. Got the meat mile and everything was delish--especially loved the pork and the fries. Great beers as well. Service was fast and friendly. And LOVE the location in downtown Liberty. We'll definitely be back

Yelp
What a great new addition to the KC BBQ world. Stopped by here while in town for a Chiefs game and I wasn't disappointed. Their burnt ends rank up there with Joes and Q39 which is amazing. I'm not a coleslaw fan, but fell in love with the wasabi slaw. My boyfriend from Iowa said the tenderloin sandwich was true Iowa style and he managed to almost eat it all. Ambiance is great with bar and regular seating. We sat at the bar and Jill gave exceptional service! I'd hire her away if I could. She even was nice enough to give me ingredients to the peppermint expresso martini and I purchased once I got back to TX. Everyone needs to try out this location on all fronts.
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
Went for the beer, but was knocked out by the food! BBQ based menu with great sides. Love the atmosphere and the staff was friendly.
google avatar

Beverly N Derrick A.

Yelp
Their Smash burger was delicious. I ordered a salad in place of the fries; it was amazing and large for a side salad. The outside patio was beautiful. Service was great as well.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
I'm on a tour of KC Breweries and BBQ, so 3 Halves Brewing and BBQ is a two for one stop! The beer and bbq were both good - the BBQ in particular was better than many of the KC "institutions" that others frequent. The meat came without sauce, so that you could choose between their regular and spicy sauces. The burnt ends and brisket were both tender, and the spicy cheese curds were surprisingly hot. Another nice touch - a changing table in the men's restroom. Thank you, as I sometimes bring the kiddos and it's nice to know there's a changing table, if needed.
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Food was fantastic, moving from Texas to this was some of the best BBQ we have had in the area. Seasoned well and very moist! Beers also good , our server Jay was a gem! Super friendly and very engaging! We will be back
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
It was a beautiful evening and we were excited to sit on a patio, have some drinks and barbecue. Visiting 3 Halves Brewing gave us one of those things. We entered and wait to be seated, we asked the hostess if we could please sit on the patio. We were told the patio was only for large parties as there were only large tables. Bummer for sure but we rolled with it, she then proceeded to sit us in the back of the establishment in a corner with storage items, definitely killed the mood. The only positive thing was the food and our waitress, food came out quick and we paid and left as quick as we came thankfully! The loaded tots were very good, next time I will be sure to ask to sit near a window ‍
google avatar

Rachel P.

Yelp
We had an enjoyable time with some beer and BBQ. The flight was a nice chance to try several options. I enjoyed the Mexican lager and the cherry sour the most, and the cream stout was a perfect serving in the smaller glass. The burnt ends were good, as was the brisket. The beans and corn were nothing special. The patio is a great spot to enjoy a beautiful evening and the server was very personable.

Tracy P.

Yelp
Busy night but got in quick. Great atmosphere, servers, food and beers were all 5 stars. I would highly recommend this spot with a casual atmosphere!

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Beware, smoking is allowed on the patio so if you want to sit outside to enjoy the nice weather and fresh air while you dine....you may not be able to. We've been here several times and enjoy the food, beer and atmosphere, but this ruined for me.
google avatar

Rolanda P.

Yelp
Unpopular opinion warning, BBQ is not my faaaavorite food, l mean I like it enough, but it's never my first choice. Insert big but here, if I'm in Liberty this is one of my favorite spots! They have a great variety on the menu without it being overwhelming or lacking quality. We consistently receive great service and it's always clean. There's a lovely outdoor patio which the weather is perfect for this time of year. It's a place you can linger with friends and no one makes you feel bad, there's not a hint of pretentiousness here, just an air of; we make good food, you enjoy it...sort of feel. The atmosphere is rustic-sleek, if that's a thing. My menu highlights: Burgers, hit every time, I dare you try the cowboy burger, I've only had a bite or two of a friends but dang ditley if that didn't send me to tasty town and I never wanted to come back. It's the sort of meal your offered a bite of and then you spend the rest of your meal drooling over it with an inner lament for having not ordered it yourself. Loaded Tots, whoa Nelly, I'll be back for those. Nachos with brisket...those are my jam. Salad, fresh, huge, satisfying and the ranch is bomb. Mac n cheese, is just perfection really and when topped with meat it's the most charming food group you'll ever meet. Cheese curds, fresh, hot for you. Never hard or under a light, this place doesn't dabble in half-assery. Fine people of Liberty, you lucked out when this placed settled on the square, it's worth a drive from anywhere around the metro, and there's lots to do nearby, pickle ball courts, walking trails, frisbee golf, mountain bike trails, shopping or roller skating if that's your thing. Lastly, I'll say this, 3 halves is creative BBQ fare with great beer choices that will satisfy anyone in your group. There's something here for everyone! Get over there and nosh

Dichosa M.

Yelp
Really excited to try due to reviews but was disappointed. It was slow service, and the meat was dry. We have been trying lots of barbecue while visiting the area and this was the most disappointing. Most expensive too. Won't be back since there are so many great choices nearby.

Sandra M.

Yelp
The service was great! The bbq brisket sandwich was so good! The baked beans were spicy but full of flavor. I would definitely return.
google avatar

Seth B.

Yelp
Huge portions for a true BBQ joint. You cannot go wrong with the sliced brisket sandwich.
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Grabbed a late lunch at 3 halves. Loved their beer flights! They have my FAVORITE sour I've ever had- the currant state of affairs. If you like fruity beers or sours, definitely check it out! We ordered the two meat plate with brisket, burnt ends, street corn, and cheese curds. The brisket and cheese curds were perfect! I am usually a burnt ends girl, but I didn't love theirs. The outside was super tough and PEPPERY. The street corn was just ok. Lastly, service was SLOW. We sat and waited for a LONG time before ordering. Overall, I'd go back for the sour beer, brisket, and cheese curds!
google avatar

Teddy A.

Yelp
This place is incredible! I have had their beers for several years and they have always been stellar. They have stepped up their food game a well. The bbq is amongst the top few in KC for me. Today I got this delicious tenderloin. Definitely should check them out!

Yelp
3 Halves Brew Pub & BBQ is our KC BBQ go-to when we come up for Chiefs & Royals games! 5 stars! Period! Great meals! Ambiance rocked! Service was 5 star! See ya there!

Jeffrey N.

Yelp
Had the pulled pork Mac and Cheese, was amazing and the bbq sauce was delicious. Tiffany Tea was my server and she was pleasant and attentive. Would highly recommend you check this place out.

Dawn B.

Yelp
Slow. Slow. Fingers all over the rim of my glass. Reaching through near my face to get items. Braided her hair in the eating area/bar. Poor service. Food okay. Simply nasty Won't be back. Ever.

K W.

Yelp
The beans were not cooked long enough & were tough, the mac & cheese was pasty & they put Parmesan on top which ruined the flavor, the Carolina sauce was tart, the French fries were soggy and when we got our bill, it was just as much as Jack stacks. Over priced, not good. And they told another table that they're out of ribs in addition to their beans at 7pm on a Friday.
