4 Star Theater

Great spot for live music! Went for the first time to see one of my favorite artists, JW Francis. Classic theater, comfy seat, great elevated stage so that even if people are dancing up front they arent blocking your view, great sound, visuals, etc... During the opener, The Moondrops, 6 minutes of visuals included clips from the Teletubbies with a psychedelic backdrop - it was awesome. If they continue to book acts I am even remotely interested I will absolutely be returning as much as I can!

Comedy Night at this Theater is Great so very convenient. Parking may take a little patience, but I've always managed to get nearby spot if I'm not rushed. This Theater and The Balboa are both operated by CinemaSF. Some of the best commedians have performed here with the finals for SF Comedy Competition. Cute & imitated little theatre. Went to see THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS after a long day. Clean and nice setting and comfy seat. Love the structure and landmark. Just oldie but goodie.

Very neat and clean theater. Loved the art hanging in the lobby/gallery. Nice craft beer selection. I didn't stay for a movie because I was pressed for time, but will be back. Great place to stop in for a bite to eat and a drink even if you do not have time for a movie.

Yet another classic cinema in SF with that old-school vibe that makes going to watch movies in theaters a real treat of an experience. Tickets as well as drinks & food are quite reasonably priced. The theaters have quite a flat structure with very minimal slope per row, meaning seats towards the back are definitely advisable for the best viewing angles - seats in the closer rows are a bit hard on the neck after a coupe hours of looking up at the screen. All in all after seeing a film here I now understand why it's considered by residents of the Richmond District to be a pretty iconic venue. The family that runs the theater is kind and welcoming, the movies that play here are often hard to find elsewhere (like foreign films - for example, I saw the Spanish film "Pain & Glory" here), and the theaters are quite cozy. Tips: tickets at the door (at the time of writing) cost $12.50, which (again at the time of writing) is the same price they are sold on websites such as Fandango. There is no reserved seating in advance. Also, note that movies start at the EXACT time they are scheduled to start. I learned this the hard way as I came in about 30 seconds after the scheduled start time and missed the opening frames of the movie. Finally, there are only 2 1-person restrooms - one for men and one for women, meaning it is definitely advisable to get there early should you need to use the bathroom before the movie.

One of the friendliest, coziest theaters I've ever been to. Came here while I was visiting San Francisco to watch Spirited Away, and is one of my favorite memories of the city.

Reopened, and the remodel of the lobby looks good 👍. Went there for coffee ☕️, and they have an espresso machine to make your favorite coffee drinks. They also sell bagels courtesy of The Laundrymat (Balboa). Would like to visit for a movie 🎬 in the near future. Great theater for the neighborhood, for it brings good energy.

Well done remodeling, very classic and beautiful. The popcorn is delicious and vegan, good drink option and parking was easy. Great choice of old films.

Cute, classic community movie theater tucked away in the richmond. I bumped into this spot after going on a post dinner digestion walk and was surprised to find out they do FREE weekend matinee shows! Howl's Moving Castle is one of my all time favorite movies so I had to go and I was really happy with my experience! Depending on the movie, the theater can get packed so plan accordingly. Outside of that, this theater is also attached to a Tunnel Records shop with lots of cool offerings. They also seem to have other shows and events, so it's very worth stopping by next time you're on Clement!

Quirky, cool, amazing lil local theater with movies and live music, as well as visual experiences. Definitely keep a lookout for their ongoing visual and auditory happenings. Support this small business; they're really freaking awesome. Can't wait to go back.

Came here this past weekend for the Green Film Fest of SF, presented by Indiefest. Parking is horrendous in the area, but after circling around about 8 times, I lucked out with a spot right in front of the venue. Pretty cool theater, connected to a record store, or more accurately, it has a record store inside (closed off on a Saturday evening of course). The movie posters and art decorating the walls in the lobby added character to the place. Service at the ticket counter was straightforward and sufficient, and they sold snacks and drinks, including popcorn, pretzels, sausages, and ice cream. Sound and picture in the auditorium were clear and engaging, and the folding seats were basic but clean and comfortable. Cool spot. They probably should have called themselves "5 Star Theater."

It's so awesome to have this theatre up and running again in SF. The team at CinemaSF (who also operate Balboa and the Vogue) have done a great job. There are so many things to like here. First, it's an old and beautiful, single screen theatre. Second, they have a really well curated selection of movies that really reflect the diversity of people in their community. Things that appeal to me even further: always a solid selection of canned beer available to go with their delicious popcorn. Think barebottle or original pattern. And recently, Tunnel records has setup shop in the back, meaning you can pick up some tunes during your visit too! And while it's hard to say yet if this will be a permanent thing, they've started having bands play here! 4 star, you keep getting better and better. Cheers.

Just saw Mrs. Doubtfire with my son during a special Robin Williams Tribute week and they arranged for a comedian to do a stand up skit beforehand! My son is still talking about it. And boy do I miss interacting with Robin around the hood. Thanks, 4 Star. You and the Balboa Theatre embrace community and fun and the Richmond is lucky to have you!

I finally made it to 4 Star theater, the latest of the Cinema SF theaters! Like the Balboa and Figure, 4 Star is charming, local, and independent. What's unique is that it also houses Hot House, a little record store and merch area within the theater that sometimes hosts art exhibitions. I watched Jaws here and loved the weird ads beforehand, including Weird Al's Jurassic Park video, inexplicably. Would love to come back here again!

Really enjoyed viewing the classic movie Slapshot at 4 Star Theatre as it has a great vibe to it and a nice selection of beer and non alcoholic beverages. Theatre and bathrooms were very clean so it was all comfortable to relax. For SF things to do, catching a movie at 4 Star is going into my regular rotation.

Fridays only to get "The Laundromat" pizza. Same owner as the restaurant on Balboa and 38th Ave. I stopped by, two choices: pepperoni or mushroom. One slice of mushroom, toasted. So hot, was walking and eating. I'm partial to no tomato sauce, which is what this is. Parmigiano parmesan cheese makes the edges crunchy like cheese sticks. Smells so good once it gets heated. Doughy kind of thick.

My husband loves movies so I thought it would be a great idea to rent a local theatre to show his favorite movie! Communication with Michael to reserve the theatre was easy. On the day of our event, we dropped off a balloon banner at the theatre in the morning. The kind and lovely staff helped us hang and set it up before our guests arrived that afternoon. Shout out to Serena for being so communicative and enthusiastic! The movie was a foreign film and the theatre was able to play the blu-ray DVD that we provided. (They tested it a week before our event as well to make sure it worked) The popcorn here is also very tasty! Overall our guests were blown away by this cute retro theatre that had a larger screen than we expected. They also enjoyed that it is located in the nice Clement St area. We were very pleased and encourage others to support this neighborhood theatre!

4 star is a beloved neighborhood theatre. They are now open for movies, and coffee & bagels in the morning. Let's support this awesome local (and one of the last) working theaters!

Just came to see the Carole King documentary and it was sooooo good. I'll be supporting this theater as much as possible!!!!! Thanks for reopening!!!!

We saw "Once Upon a Time in the West" which is a very old film. It was super fun to see it here. They have good concessions and they even serve beer. It's definitely an old timey theater experience and that is a good thing. The people that worked there were super friendly and efficient. They also have a record store in the "lobby!" I will be back.

I recently missed a show and tried to contact the theater beforehand by phone (no answer) and email (no response). Despite this, they refused to offer a refund. To make matters worse, their refund policy is nowhere to be found on their website. This feels like deceptive business practices, and I'm disappointed by their lack of customer service. They have a nice selection of films but sadly their customer service is so shady and abysmal, I'd recommend seeking out any other art house theater in the bay.

I'm just happy that a historic neighborhood theater like this one is still around as SF seems to be blazing ahead with paving over every single inch of this once charming city. They've added a cool ass gallery/art space (?) and I think it may be due to the new ownership/mgmt. Anytime an Ang Lee flick like Eat Drink Man Woman (a classic) is shown here it makes the trip up from the northern peninsula worth it because how many other theaters in this city will even show international classics (those limited offerings at the megaplexes barely count) like THIS place? It's definitely worth the rideshare trip or if you can handle the challenge of finding proximity parking, which will probably take at least half an hour depending on your luck or relationship with the parking gods. Plenty of decent places to eat in the area but check the hours because it's in a sleep-ier part of town.

A super cute theater. Very small, but perfect for a date night. Plenty of things around the area as well to do before or after the movie. Definitely recommend.

One of the few remaining neighborhood movie theaters. I prefer sitting in a cozy old theater like this to the new ones with recliner seats and waiter service and other bells and whistles. The wonderful owners are trying to keep the 4-Star alive but it's tough in the City these days. Please consider coming out and supporting this local business. You'll be rewarded with a magical small movie theater experience.

Four Star Theater is a neighborhood gem. The theater is beautiful and clean, with lots of yummy food and beverage offerings, including Laundromat pizza Friday nights, and bagels on mornings and weekends. We've been a few times for their children's films showings, including Soul and Frozen. It's nice to be in a space that's kid friendly, and definitely helps the whole family relax. They only seem to host kids movies once a month. I hope they add more -- We try to go as often as we can and always have a great time. More chick flicks would be nice, too -- Bodyguard, anyone? :)

First time going to 4star since it had reopened and I honestly expected more with how long this theater had taken to reopen. It's a throwback theater, so vintage seats and vibes are to be expected, but there was a major issue - at least on the left side of the theater - with a smell of mildew/sewage which seemed to be seeping through or under the wall. My partner and I were getting near constant wafts of it which made for an extremely unpleasant experience. We had already moved once during the show because someone inexplicably began setting up extra rows of regular chairs in the back of the theater after the movie had started when there were plenty of seats still available... so I didn't want to move again, but damn that smell was terrible. Someone NEEDS to check the plumbing of the bathroom on the other side of the wall. Can't say I'm excited to go back, if you want a vintage theater experience, try Balboa theater first.
