The 38 Best London Restaurants, According to Eater’s Local Dining Expert | Eater

"A treasure. Unmoved by the comings and goings of trends, Bermondsey’s 40 Maltby St is a 40-cover answer to the question, pejorative as it may often be: What is British food? Steve Williams is a chef’s chef, cited by James Lowe, Brett Graham, and Florence Knight in their top five in the city. Raef Hodgson of distributor Gergovie Wines — which features low-intervention styles — runs the front-of-house without hubris. Recent dishes included winners such as pork schnitzel with raw celeriac, mustard, and braised potatoes, onion, and thyme, or a chestnut and brown sugar meringue. Know before you go: Check Instagram for the menu, which always features an in-joke or two." - Adam Coghlan

Yelp
A shop owner at Borough Market recommended this restaurant to us and I'm so glad we went! The food was incredible and the atmosphere was casual but cool.

Yelp
Rather expensive tbh. Very good selection of wine. we got a bottle and it was great value. The beef tongue was out of the world. It was so yummy and they are not shy in giving you plenty. Pork curry is very flavorful. I do think you can get it cheaper somewhere else but oh well. Come around 5 because it says they open at 5 but there was already people so I guess I'd you wanna secure a table, come early because it does get really busy.

Yelp
Great service, cute space and blah food. Love the fact they give everyone bread. Nowhere in London does that. Beetroot orange salad had a nice acidity to start things off. But way too small. Barely enough for 1 person. Broccoli potato rosti was a bit bland. Broccoli and mushroom lacked texture. Far too gooey. Bernaise was a nice umami touch. Pork & fennel ragout was the consistency of a very bland chilli. Fried polenta was boring. Think it would've been more fun with a quinoa or another grain. Or preferably a tagliatelle.

Yelp
40 Maltby St is a simple yet elegant restaurant that serves some really delicious and fresh foods. The menu is constantly changing week to week as the chefs see what is in season a build around it. Otherwise, you'll find a solid selection of wine and only one beer on tap (at the time it was an organic ale). Service here is solid. I went with the monkfish and it was delightful. Fresh. Well cooked. A nice batter on the outside. Accompanied by some good vegetables. Was honestly a pleasant time

Yelp
The best lunch I've had in London. Tucked away in one of the railway arches of Maltby Street market lies this hidden gem. Honestly I can't believe it's taken me so long to find this place. The market itself is brilliant. Nice and varied mix of food and food related market vendors blended with more established and permanent restaurants. We visited at lunch time one Saturday, around 12pm to be precise and the place was empty. Staff were super friendly and we were immediately welcomed in. A small bar/dining area greets you and seating is communal. This is a small space and they make every inch of room count. The small space quickly fills up so arrive relatively early to avoid disappointment. Expect to stay all day, so you will want a nice seat. First things first, choose your wine. The extensive wine list is fantastic. There is no table service here, which I loved. It really added to the vibe of the place. Rustic isn't quite the right word. Informal, friendly and relaxed does it more justice. Next thing to decide is what you're going to eat (first). The menu is presented behind the bar on a chalk board. I was a little put out by this at first but actually have decided that I love the idea. Everything they do here is seemingly for a reason and that reason is to create a unique and amazing dining experience. It's just fun here! We started with a few small dishes but ended up trying everything - some things more than once! The food here is simply divine. Simple dishes, simply cooked and simply delicious. The menu changes often so I cannot recommend a single dish - all I would say is try them all! Friendly and super knowledgeable service, super food and a great atmosphere - you need to come here, again and again

Yelp
Yes, yes, yes. Great new british food, inventive and traditional, rustic and delicate, (... you get the idea!) Plates are small to medium, so think of it as tapas-y style. Chatted to the very friendly head-chef, and he enthused with passion for simple, tasty and seasonal food, with quirky world twists and matched to really interesting wine choices. Very much in the St.John tradition (which is just up the street). Perfect for a drop-in and pick-me-up.

Yelp
Interesting, super delicious and ever-changing menu. This is almost like a pub - casual, relaxed, simple - crossed with a speakeasy - hidden away and for those in the know. They have a curated list of wines by the bottle and glass that will excite your tastebuds. Each wine has a story and each food matches the wine. Highly recommend. Perfect spot for post Druid St Market fun.

Yelp
Honestly, just brilliant. Fantastic. It is everything I look for in a restaurant - small, manageable and a constantly changing menu that highlights seasonal favorites. I always go for restaurants that have smaller menus rather than larger, as items are more likely to be super fresh. Anyways. This place doesn't look like it - but it's a hidden gem. It's at the head of Maltby Street Market, right before you enter the ropewalk. They have an excellent selection of wine, and the small dishes are incredible. A friend and I got the vegetarian options of fried courgettes (with goat curds and pesto) and beetroot and Beenleigh Blue. Let's just say the attention to these dishes are....breathtaking. If you have any questions, the staff is absolutely happy to help answer them. They know a lot about their wine, and can help you decide what you should get based on what you order. What a perfect pairing! Lastly, they carry Little Bread Pedlar bread. The baguette is worth going alone. Before you go, check if they're open though!

Yelp
Can't believe more Yelpers aren't flocking to this place. I love it. Set in a railway arch this is a wine driven restaurant. Just look on the menu for whatever they are making today. Everything was delicious and I love having lots of small plates and pairings. They are really knowledgeable and excited about their wines. We had cauliflower fritters, a delicious duck, a haddock florentine, a fabulous chicken cream soup, and ginger truffles. It is primarily bar-style with a communal table so I'd recommend going with one or two other people to keep it manageable. Bon appetit!

Yelp
Hidden gem in London. Excellent variety of wines. Food is amazing

Yelp
Nice atmospheric, railway arch wine bar. I'm not a wine drinker (my companion was), so all I can say on that front is that the wine is plentiful, various and seemed to meet her exacting standards. The food, however, was wonderful. The cheese board was varied and interesting; the bread superb. The kid goat ragout was tender and flavoursome. The gernot (spelling?) was even better. The menu changes daily too, so there will be something different to try every time.

Yelp
Quick glance: + great selection of wine and tapas + fantastic atmosphere for intimate catch-ups + staff with good knowledge of wine... - ... but could do with being more engaging with advice - slightly tricky to locate for first-timers Full review: This particular joint is located in Maltby Street Market, converted from previously unused space under railway arches on this road. 40 Maltby Street is a gergovie wine merchant, but on select evenings it also doubles up as a tapas bar serving up a wide selection of wine by the glass, as well as by bottle, and decent food. Check their website to confirm opening times. For first-timers to Maltby Street, the location could be slightly tricky to find, so remember you are looking for the railway line. Other than that, the venue itself is superb for a intimate catch up with your special ones or with a close friend. The venue isn't very big and there is no reservation, so arrive early and grab yourself an area. There are bar stools and high tables, so it may not be as comfortable for some, but I personally found the ambiance and noise level (or lack thereof - no blaring music and you can't really hear the rumble of the train) to be perfect for an evening catch up. In fact, the bar stools were pretty comfortable too! The staff was, unsurprisingly for a wine bar, knowledgeable about the wine on offer, although some could be more attentive to customer's needs. This particular chap recommended us a white wine because we were having scallops to start, which on a wine-pairing basis was sound advice. However, my friend prefers deep, peppery red wine and told him as much, particularly as we were having stronger flavours for other courses, but instead he recommended us light, fruity red wine which, while perfectly palatable, left my friend slightly disappointed. Overall, though, 40 Maltby Street is a great place for some nibbles, good wine, and long catch-ups.

Yelp
great place to pop in for some wine or food while at maltby street market. particularly if it's freezing outside like it was yesterday! we had a couple bottles of red here but didn't get to try the food, since there were so many goodies outside at the market.

Yelp
This place sums up what is best about London. Unusual, quirky, hidden away venue. Unpretentious and effortlessly cool set up. Young knowledgeable and friendly staff. Simple but excellent quality and well prepared menu (food and drink). Mixed aged and type of crowd. Could it be better? Only if they opened for breakfast and I lived next door!
