On the Grid : 401 Richmond

"One of the true hidden gems in this pocket of the downtown core is the Roof Gardens located at 401 Richmond. Beginning informally about 20 years ago by Property Manager, Mike Moody, the once-barren area is has flourished much like its tenants in this arts-centric space." - Jam3

"Once a tin lithography factory, 401 Richmond set the standard for industrial-to-arts conversions and now houses over 150 artists, nonprofits, and urbanist orgs; it’s open to the public so you can wander halls, pop into small galleries, and find a quiet moment on their secret rooftop patio—grab a coffee at Dark Horse downstairs and flip through design-forward titles at Swipe Books nearby." - Coolstuff Team

The building is an architectural marvel, I loved their gallery themes, the curatorial choices were very thorough and as a fellow urban planner, I really enjoyed Jane Jacob’s landscape artwork and literature. The gallery also has a courtyard which is nature lover’s dream admist the concrete walls on Downtown TO!

Art building with many floors and rooms displaying artwork. Also a coffee shop with great selection of food and drinks. For sure I’ll be back to explore more and relax with cup of coffee ☕️😄👍🏼

Visited this Art Gallery during the White Night on October 1st where there were presenting in their little garden “music video clips” from the 50s and 60s, a type of vintage YouTube, using the original film technology. Spent there over an hour. It was like going back in time. Of course, I visited the rest of the gallery. The art in conjunction with the architecture of the building has a distinctive spirit. I go there sometimes, plus it’s free! It also hosts numerous art and more organizations, so super cool.

I absolutely love coming here. It is the place to explore a multiude of different exhibits of all types of art. It's a hub that celebrate artists. The staff were friendly and professional. The space itself was amazing to explore! There is also a small courtyard. If you love art you mist come here.

Delighted to have come across this building - It's a quiet collective of art studios, free of charge for the public to access and view. The industrial aesthetic of the building (refurbished from an old factory) is reminiscent of Montreal architecture to me.

I randomly stumbled about this building while wandering downtown and I'm so glad I went in. There are so many random art galleries and the building itself is gorgeous. Amazing place to just wander around alone as there is something around every corner.
