Ballard’s 418 Public House Is Closing Next Month | Eater Seattle

"I was surprised when an unassuming Ballard watering hole announced on Facebook that it will close after service on Saturday, October 19. The pub has been a neighborhood staple in its eight years in business and earned a reputation for reliable Mexican food — especially deeply flavorful soups like caldo de birria and pozole — which helped it land on Eater Seattle’s list of the city’s best Mexican restaurants. 418 Public House told Eater that the restaurant is closing because the building it sits in will be torn down after a developer bought the property and is planning a three-story apartment building on the parcel, according to My Ballard; when that sale was originally announced in 2016, the pub said it had several years left on its lease with no plans to close, but it seems the vision for the plot has since changed." - Megan Hill

After researching all the restaurants in the area, 412 Public House stood out—and it did not disappoint! I usually go for steak or salmon, but the tacos on the menu caught my eye. Let me tell you, these aren’t your average dry steak tacos—they were incredibly juicy and packed with flavor. The meat was so tender it left a savory trail of juice across the plate. As a fry lover, I can happily say they were solid! And the drinks? Spot on. I had recently been let down by an Old Fashioned at another spot, but Jeremy, the bartender at 412, absolutely nailed it. Smooth, balanced, and perfectly crafted. The bar was buzzing with regulars, always a good sign when locals keep coming back. For great food, expertly mixed drinks, and friendly conversation, 412 Public House is a must-visit.

Got to get here early. They have a waitlist text system so that’s cool. Grab a drink and wait on the deck. Food was phenomenal. Steak Tacos were awesome, son had filet and he is picky but he loved it, wife had Beef Marsala and liked it too. Margaritas was good and the selection of craft beers was decent. Had a Brown Sour and a local IPA which I liked. Ohhh and the cheese sticks are not what you think. Looks hand made , not some TGI Friday stuff.

First off the Staff is awesome, friendly , knowledgeable . Next the place is clean , smells good , no sticky floors or stained carpets. Next the food , I'm sorry but I gotta say this is the best ribeye . Perfectly cooked rare is hard to hit but you did it. The salad was amazing , tasted fresh , all the different ingrate is make that house salad perfect. The garlic mashed was again perfect , if Ever ever back In town I will be back , very well pleased. Great Job everyone!!! I travel for my job every other week , I review all the places I eat. This place would be in my top 5 of 2025. Again thanks for the awesome food , hospitality, and brew.

The wait staff are so sweet and the service was great. They were courteous. The food was good, but it is pricey. A slice of cheesecake is $11.00. The cheesecake was halved between two people.

We stopped here for lunch. The fried green tomato BLT was really good, although there was too much bread for the size of the tomatoes. The grilled red snapper was moist, but needed more seasoning. The brussel sprouts were great. Service was a little slow, but our server said they were short staffed.

It was our first time going here 2/7/25 around 12:40 pm. Emma our waitress was great. The food was awesome. Crab dip with Wongs .. now this was yummy. Hubby Ron got the Bison burger with fries. Awesome burger. Had to get one to go for our friend Karl who said it was awesome burger also. I Dani got Tortelline Alfredo with chicken. This was yummy too. The waitress even wrote down I was highly allergic to shrimp and lime (Ty). She got a nice tip. We will be back again.

Went for our 42nd Anniversary. Everyone was so sweet. The food was amazing. The food was fantastic. I had steak tacos with sweet potato fries and my husband had a steak, mashed potatoes and asparagus. We had a blooming apple with ice cream and caramel drizzle for dessert. Happy 42nd Anniversary to us. I was a great nite.

On my journey to find the best hamburger served in middle Alabama, I stopped here for lunch. The taste of that hamburger was very good. The smoked Gouda and caramelized onions added lots of flavor. The brioche type bun was smallish. The ground beef hamburger was a little overcooked and slightly dry. I wanted more juicy flavor. The presentation was nicely served on a rectangular white plate. Too large round filled pickle slices were affixed to the top of the bun with a toothpick. Complementing the burger was a generous order of bright orange waffle-cut sweet potato fries. The fries were crispy, but the grains of salt on the fries were too large. While my lunch was not a clear winner, I am intrigued by the chef’s abilities to return for other menu items.

Yelp
Tiny little place. Jammed nearly full @ 12:30-1:00. Always a Good sign! I wasn't in any hurry, but I was very hungry bc I skipped breakfast today. Either way, there wasn't any wait time to be seated & as I waited to order the flow of people seemed quite quickly in & out. The place is nice & clean & my waitress was Great! (sorry I didn't get her name) There is an outdoor seating area - but, was wet from the rain showers passing thru for the last 3 or 4 days... but, April showers bring May flowers & I don't know anyone who doesn't like that... I was not @ all sure what to order but, ended uP ordering what my waitress suggested: the Gouda burger (special Strawberry Festival edition). (i.e strawberry jam added) & OMG! I am soo glad I did! SOOO GOOD I got sweet potato waffle fries with caramel sauce as a side to my burger mmm! Highly recommend The lady @ the table next to mine had the crusted Ahi - Next Time 412... Next Time. It looked soo good I had a hard time not asking her for a bite... That all said: It was very Good! No Complaints from me... But, it is a little Pricey for lunch. $23.00 including Tea for 1 person. But, these days - Not all that bad... I suppose & it WAS 2 meals for me....

Yelp
This was a chance visit, but we were not disappointed. I loved the atmosphere. The cocktails were amazing! I will return for a gimlet as soon as I can. The staff was friendly and very helpful explaining the menu.

Yelp
A very cute place with a nice ambience and friendly staff. It was a nice little detour on a trip we took, and a worthy one at that. I got the Gouda burger and my husband got fish tacos. Clean, quiet, and easy to find.

Yelp
We stopped in on our way back home for a quick bite to eat. The menu is fairly diverse so everyone should be able to find something to eat. We were greeted fairly quickly and the restaurant was fairly busy at the time. It had an upscale casual vibe so we felt comfortable in our jeans-no need for a fancy dress. I had the fried green tomato BLT and my husband had a bison burger. My husband said his burger was a tad salty, but it didn't deter him from finishing up his meal. I enjoyed my BLT, with the house fries.

Sonya S.

Yelp
I had the best lavender drink and Marsala beef with asparagus. The waitress was very attentive and keeps checking back to make sure all is good. The atmosphere was really amazing.

Michael P.

Yelp
On the plus side the service was friendly and accommodating. The food which is why I went there was not good. Ordered the brisket sandwich and the brisket was extremely salty to the point of tasting like ham and was not at all tender. The sweet potato fries I ordered as my side were extremely overcooked to the point of being almost like sweet potato chips. Giving them 2 stars vs 1 primarily as a couple of people in my group got the catfish sandwich and really enjoyed it.

Emily C.

Yelp
The service was amazing! Great prices for a menu with a good variety. The salmon was amazing with a bit of a kick of spice. Had the fries as a side and they were great. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
We visited Ava Maria Grotto (nice interesting place too) with another couple, a few weeks ago and went early in the morning to avoid the extreme heat of the day. We picked 412 to try for lunch and arrived right around noon. It was very busy, but we were able to sit together at the bar. There was a happy noisy crowd for a weekday, but it wasn't too loud for decent conversation. And it was a lot of fun. The blood orange margaritas were outstanding. The Asian nachos with grilled chicken were delicious and would have fed all four of us, but we, of course, ordered more food including the brisket sandwich, the Alfredo, and a spinach and fruit salad. All were delicious. Nick, our bartender/waiter was fun and efficient. He even split a single shot of a bourbon we wanted to sample so each of us could have a tiny taste!

Yelp
What a great experience I had at 412 Public House. The food and the service were absolutely amazing! For food, my group shared the wonton nachos with chicken and shrimp, which was stacked high with deliciousness! I do wish that the dish in general had a little bit more sauce on it because it was slightly dry, but still, it was tasty. I then ordered the catfish plate with a side salad. Omg! The plate was full of catfish which was seasoned very well and crispy. Then for dessert, we shared a crème brûlée cheesecake and the butter cake with candied bacon bits. Now even though the cheesecake was good, the true winner was the butter cake. It was almost like you were eating sweet bacon and pancakes. It was absolutely delicious!! All in all, so glad we chose 412 as this was our first time here. We will definitely be back to visit!!

Yelp
Great waitress. Very nice and I had a good drink from the bar. It was very nice evening out with my guy. Pretty quiet so we could talk and giggle together. I got the pork chop with mashed potatoes and enjoyed very much. The

Yelp
Another great spot in Cullman. Came with a large group so we were seated outside but had no problems with service. Didn't catch the name of our server but she made sure we all had drinks taken care of, including refills, all while she was serving another group inside. Food quality was great from the appetizers we ordered to the entrees. Also, plenty of menu items to choose from depending on how you're feeling. Great cocktails as well. Overall, a great dining experience and a restaurant that felt well rounded. They also have nice merchandise.

Yelp
Great food and service ! There was a little wait and it was crowded as there is not a lot of seating. A pub type ambiance with more elevated food. We had the shrimp nachos and steak tacos. Both were excellent!
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
Food was perfect, highly recommend! We had rib cut pork chop and the salmon Had to search hard in town to find positive reviews of other locations. This was worth 10 minutes of drive from hotel.

Yelp
OMG..... what a place !!! It was quite busy when we arrive with not a seat to be had. It was 12:45, so we sorta expected the crowd. Then, voila'.... a couple stood up and two seats became available at the bar. Nice classy, friendly restaurant. Jessi was extremely busy, but finally got our drink order. They close at 2:00... quickly, we ordered the pork sandwich with sweet potato fries. It came loaded with pork chunks (not shredded like usual), with a couple of onion rings stuffed inside. It was stinking delicious!!! . The portion pork meat far exceeded our expectations. The sweet potato was large slices, very crunchy on the outside with a very soft center. Perfect meal for us to share. Highly recommended.... But get there early @ 11:00 when they open.

Yelp
Small, packed bistro with great service and food. I was pleasantly surprised to find this quality in Cullman.

Yelp
Found this hidden gem by a local recommendation. MY WORD is all I have to say! The bartender Nick was friendly, helpful and put up with me asking for a couple of tasters so I knew which beer I wanted. I ended up getting one of each I tasted ... yea they are that good! The food - ok let me tell you about these sliders. They sound amazing right... they taste even better ! The side salad ... just do yourself a favor and get the spicy ranch! Great spout for day date, business, casual , you name it. We will 100% be back! Don't miss out ... make your way to downtown Cullman today and check out this gem

Yelp
The ribeye steaks were excellent. I highly recommend. The waitress was very attentive even though they were busy.

Yelp
If you're looking for an exceptional place for date night, 412 Public House is the top choice in Cullman! The food is consistently delicious, and their spicy margarita is a perfect 10/10. Also the customer service is great. Stephen P. Gannon deserves an award for best business owner

Yelp
Great place! I stopped in while traveling through for business and the yelp reviews brought me in (and were dead on as always). I loved the at home vibe of the room, very welcoming. The service was impeccable. I started with the seared Ahi Tuna and for my entree had the steak tacos.

Marsha R.

Yelp
Cute place, great service. Full bar and outdoor seating. Great portions. seasonings were good. Food was hot when it arrived.

Yelp
The refurbished old building provides wonderful ambiance. Casual dress. Convenient street parking. Seating at a cool bar, a couple high tops, and tables. Good vibe! Drinks are great. The food and service is excellent. The two of us had salmon off the menu and a special of crispy chicken breast on sweet potatoes and roasted Brussels sprouts covered with gravy. Both were well prepared and tasty. Reasonable pricing. It is an annual stop on our drive to or from Florida the past few years.

William P.

Yelp
The restaurant is small so parties larger than 3 would be tight at the table. However, the food is great. Highly recommend the catfish plate. Desert is a treat if you have room for it. More than likely you will need a box to take some home. The bar serves good drinks, wife says try the margaritas. We have over time had the steaks, burgers, fish sandwich, all was very good. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
We had the best time with our family here. We tried amazing food and had the best sever! The appetizers, drinks, and ribeyes were most delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Last year was our first time trying this restaurant. We have been several times since. Our reason for not going before was the limited menu but don't let that stop you! They usually have a daily special too! Checkout their FB page for hours

Yelp
Great food, excellent server staff, comfy small luxury vibe. Stephen, the owner, will likely be in his signature waste coat making sure everything is perfect.

Yelp
Our server Olivia was awesome and very knowledgeable when asking about menu. The food was delicious and drinks. I would definitely recommend and come back even if my drive is 1 hour and half away.

Bailey C.

Yelp
Best restaurant in Cullman. Great lunch and dinner. I've yet to have their brunch. Service is always great. Their cocktails are delicious. Only wish their restaurant was bigger so they could accommodate more people.

Yelp
We had a party of four for lunch on a Friday. We arrived early and were seated immediately. Our server was very friendly and helpful although not fully knowledgeable about wines. The bartender stepped up and helped us with our wine selection. The facility is new and very well decorated as well as clean. The menu is small but the selections seem chef inspired with an Asian flair and everything we had was well presented and tasted good. The standout was the shrimp wonton nachos. Serving sizes were plentiful. We will be going back! Urban Cowgill Oct 2018 Update March 2019 412 continues to deliver the tasty goods! The latest offering is a brisket sandwich that is amazing. Folks this sandwich is big enough to split for two. There is at least 3/4 lb of tender juicy brisket. I'm not sure but I think it was corned beef. It was definitely smoked and had a bark on it for sure. The crab dip was also delicious. Quite tasty, served with crispy fried wontons. The folks at the next table were British and also got the brisket. I don't know how one person can eat one of these but they did!! It was like the server brought it and woof woof it was gone!! Give 412 a try. You won't be dissatisfied. Urban Cowgill March 2019 Update June 2023 Over time we grew a little tired of the same menu, not that anything was bad. Recently we heard that they updated their menu so we stopped in for lunch and found a much more efficient and formally managed, yet still casual 412. It seems they have acquired some better folks to work there which means to me that it is also well managed. There's one gentleman at the window where the food comes out and he is facilitating and making sure the orders come out and the plating is good. The food came out quickly and was great. Robert was our server and he was super friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu. The caesar salad with chicken was great but didnt compare to the Gouda Burger, which might mention has been on the menu since the start. The sweet potato fries were stand outs being perfectly cooked, mushy inside and crispy outside. We will definitely be going back. Urban Cowgill June 2023

Yelp
This restaurant was a pleasant surprise! Food was delicious, great service, and nice atmosphere. My husband had a filet and he could have cut it with a spoon. I had the scallops with Parmesan grits and they were perfectly cooked. Great evening!

Alan B.

Yelp
Just finished brunch. Cool little restaurant with a boutique menu. I had the wonton nachos with chicken. Wife had fish and chips. Both meals were plenty of food. The nachos were Asian based with a sweet sauce. Next time I'm going to ask for a glass of the sauce, it was that good. The fish and chips were large and tasty. The chips/fries were good. It is definitely worth a visit. Our waitress was very attentive without being in your face all the time. Overall a great experience.

Yelp
This was our first time eating here and we really enjoyed it! Our server, Amber, was really nice and helpful while we were choosing what to eat. She gave us extra time to look over the menu, made suggestions, and answered questions about the menu items. She kept our drinks filled and our table cleared without being intrusive. I had the linguine alfredo. The consistency of the alfredo sauce was perfect, but the taste was lacking. There was no seasoning in the sauce. It was just bland. However, the grilled chicken in the dish was seasoned perfectly and the linguine was perfectly al dente. The crab dip appetizer was very good, but had a strong fishy smell and taste. Almost like canned crab or tuna. It was served with fried wonton chips that were amazing. Perfect crunch. Perfect amount of salt. So good! My husband got the smoked gouda burger (no bun) which was good. He said he wished he could have chosen the cook on the burger as it came out well done and a little dry. He got two sides with his burger. The brussel sprouts were deep fried and topped with parmesan cheese. That was a delicious and crunchy goodness. The asparagus spears were also delicious although there were only 4. This place has a vibe. It's like fancy, but approachable (if that makes sense). There were patrons in full suit and tie and some in jeans and tshirt. There are exposed beams, industrial lighting, chalkboard with a quote above the bar, lots of really cool things. There's a full bar that's set up to be beautiful as well as functional. Loved everything about this place!

Chastity B.

Yelp
This is a great little quaint restaurant. Food is good. Drinks are good. The menu definitely needs to be updated. It's been Almost the exact same options for at least three years now. A change would be very welcomed by the locals.

Yelp
We were a party of two. We sat outside as it was a gorgeous day. We shared a house salad with blue cheese dressing. It was plenty to share. Then we shared the Smoked Gouda Burger, the cauliflower crust pepperoni pizza and roasted brussel sprouts. Everything was delicious and the service was great.
google avatar

Beth C.

Yelp
Food and drinks were good. Service was good. Tables and chairs were very close together. I would not go during peak hours unless you want to eat with strangers

Marla M.

Yelp
Fabulous! Great, unique food, service was outstanding, and the ambience was neat. I would highly recommend 412!!! Robert was my awesome waiter, and he guided me through what to try during my first trip to 412.

Yelp
Got turned away for being to busy. I understand that they are having more traffic than normal but it's not ok.
google avatar

Hunter G.

Yelp
good service and great customer service, the area is beautiful around the restaurant, and to top it off the food is amazing, no complains what so ever other than the fact that they didn't have bacon bits for the salad, thank you 412, will be coming back

D G.

Yelp
I went with my daughter for a birthday lunch. It did not go as expected. After 20+ minutes I asked for the status of our food and was told that it would take another 15 minutes. I experienced that before , but did not consider it when I selected the restaurant for lunch. We decided to get our food as a to-go package. Back in the office I found that my BLT had no bacon on it. Really? The salad had about 1/5 of the dressing it needed to taste. I believe in continues improvement and wanted to make the manager aware of the situation. Both phone calls resulted in no phone call back. The person picking up the phone did not really know on how to handle the situation. The manager was not available and has not called back. I will not go back. The food is average, the tables are so close that your neighbor tables can join your conversation at any time, and lastly customer care does not exist.

Yelp
Great burger and great catfish sandwich Love the atmosphere and food Great service and very friendly

Yelp
I read some of the reviews. It sounded like a really nice place. It was, except some of the menu items, like the blueberry dessert, were not available. Wife got crab cakes. I had a steak. We both got Caesar salads, which were good but no anchovies were available. The Wonton Wrapped cheese sticks were excellent. It being around May 4, they had a drink special called "May the Forth be with you". Cute and tasty. Odd thing was that the GM GPS insisted on taking me to a woman's center. Must have been the dark side of the force. Programmed up Google maps and it took me right there.

Ken S.

Yelp
Excellent all around! Servic, Hospitality, Vibe, Food all A+. Jeremy the bar tender was amazing the food is fantastic and very reasonable. If we lived closer we'd be regulars! If you're in Cullman you need to give this a try it's awesome! Can't wait to go again. Thanks for a great dining experience!

Claire T.

Yelp
As we walked in we got told to shut the door as we barely made it in the door. We waited an hour and they kept telling us we would be seated in second with no tables coming available soon, everyone had just received food. We then asked to just push two tables together since it kept telling us we were first in line with no wait time for 30 minutes. The young hostess told us no and then we asked to just be seated in them separately and she also said they had none available as we were looking at them.
google avatar

Bob B.

Yelp
First time at 412 Public House. We got there right when they opened for dinner. It seems to me they had plenty of time between the lunch and dinner times to do something about all the dang flies! There was no food on any table yet, but when I sat down there were five (I counted them) flies at the table and they never let us alone. Not an auspicious beginning. The food helped to make up for it. I ordered the crabcakes. The remoulade was very good and I wished there was more of it. I'm sure I could have got more if I'd asked. Diner #2 got the fried chicken over garlic mashed potatoes, and man, there were a LOT of potatoes! Diner #3 got the linguini with alfredo sauce. Two of us also got salads, which were your typical dinner salads. For dessert we shared a lemon chiffon cake that was also nice. Get rid of the flies and I'll bump this up a star or two.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Scallops and burgers- OMGoodness! Ambiance fabulous and encouraged interaction among fellow diners. Little narrow and crowded. Had a bit of difficulty navigating a wheelchair from the front entrance to the table in the back, but we managed! Our server was top notch. Took a while to get the food but understandable due to the crowd (strawberry festival underway in town). No complaints and will def stop by again when in the area! No pictures unfortunately- but what a nice surprise to find this restaurant on our journey north! Did I mention the food was amazingly delicious?

Yelp
Nice old school pub type setting. Very friendly bunch working there on a Saturday afternoon. Good selection of taps from local breweries and all cocktails use handmade mixes. Got to try the wonton nachos with chicken. Outstanding Smoked Gouda burger was huge and quite tasty.

Judy J.

Yelp
Really good food and service! Interesting choices! Very resonant building so if you hate loud restaurants you might not want to eat inside.

Yelp
We were really pleased with this selection for lunch! We arrived for what would be considered a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon (no college football - so not sure what that would be like if they had a game on) - and it was still crowded. All tables were full, but they indicated we should be able to get seated in 5 minutes. Pretty accurate - 5 minutes later we were getting seated. Small menu, but plenty of good choices so not a big deal. My wife went with the Chicken Wonton Nachos and I had the Cuban - of course I had to go and make it my own (no egg and pepperjack cheese in place of the swiss). Both of us were really pleased with our selections. Really solid 4 out of 5 on both meals. Wontons were freshly made on site - even told us how to make them ourselves if we were interested. Ask your server for what they have on draft - nice selection, approx 10 - 12 to choose from. We both had a sample and liked what we had enough we ordered one each (my wife a sour, me a stout). Total damage was about $40 (pre tip). Really good place with a chill vibe about it. Also, wasn't on the menu and wish we would have known about this - the Fish and Chips looked (and smelled) amazing!

Yelp
I don't think I've ever had anything at 412 Public House that I didn't love! The won ton nachos, the burger, the seared ahi tuna, and much more. Creative and delicious. The tables and chairs are packed in there pretty tightly, so be aware if that sort of thing is bothersome to you. You can always call in a carryout order, if so.
