42nd Ave Fish and Chips

Fish was delicious, unfortunately they forgot my hush puppies and some of my fried cod. The fried cod I did get was cold and raw inside, I heated it myself. See photo of bite with raw cod.

Some of the best catfish and cod I've ever eaten, but next time and there will be a next time. I'm getting the BBQ ribs .

The lady was nice I ordered the barbecue sandwich. When I opened it I thought I had gotten the wrong order until I read the reviews. Then I realized that the 2 half-raw ribs with the bone with the 2 pieces of white bread. Bcz I was ripped off I didn't get to eat lunch. Thanks.I should have known what was up from how dirty the kitchen was. My next message will be to the board of health.

We had a friendly greeting from a nice lady, but then they got slightly slammed and didn't have anyone ready to go in the back, starting any food. So we waited Extra long until all the orders were taken. Then when we got home, both me and my partner were starving and went to dig into rib sandwiches to find, 2 rib-in smacked on plain bread. The ribs were raw and hard to chew and the Mac side was cold. No thought was put into the food and it was absolutely horrible.

Owner was really kind. Great vibes. Catfish and Greens were good. Loved the Hushpuppies. The only downside was the okra. It wasn't battered enough. Perfect meal for a rainy day.

It is surprising that a restaurant with food this horrible can stay in business. We went with our kids to get fish and chips. The fish was so distigustingly oily that we couldnt even eat it, the cornbread bites were raw in the middle, the fries were not very well cooked and somehow we got a lot of them. The condiment bottles were sticky and it just felt like someone once put their love into this restaurant but now they aren't around and the people left aren't able to put in much effort. We ended up having to buy another dinner that night, waste of money.

Wow. The food here is really good. The fish is fried to perfection, not greasy, crispy outside but soft and delicious inside. Ordered the Surf & Turf so got to try the ribs that were perfectly seasoned too. They could be just a tad softer but as is it didn’t take away from the positive experience. Cornbread and fries were just as good as everything else. Definitely coming back to enjoy their food again. There was a lot of people through the lunch rush and it took a while for our food to get out. I still give kudos to the staff though because when we came in it was just one person doing everything. He was joined by more staff eventually and that alleviated the wait for the food. And honestly when the food did get to us, was definitely worth the wait.

fish fried right and all sides from greens yams fries whatever is the truth. i come from seattle to get this spot. service is good the people are welcoming and give home vibes.

Not my favorite fish n chips spot but glad I stopped in. I'll start w/ the pros: - solid breading on the catfish (even if they weren't the meatiest) - nice homey vibe, like eating in someone's living room, you can watch tv or sit out on the front porch. - lots of options: basa, catfish, cod, salmon, oysters, clams, shrimp and ribs and lots of choices for sides as well. - good greens, it had some good chunks of meat in there too. Cons: - ribs were pretty dry, there were maybe a couple good bites and the rest was almost inedible. - the fried okra didn't have any flavor, but I also think I'm just not a big okra guy. Maybe I'd just stick to the fish next time.

DO NOT.... And I repeat, DO NOT give these people $1 of your hard earned $$. I'm in town and staying at an airport hotel. Ordered Uber Eats - $80!!! First... out of carrot cake but already charged me, have to take it up with Uber. Secondly... I ordered Mac n cheese, EXTRA ketchup and my order came with slaw... I got NO MAC N CHEESE, NO KETCHUP AND NO SILVERWARE. We called 3 times trying to rectify the situation, only to be SCREAMED AT AND HUNG UP ON ALL THREE TIMES. Before he hung up on me the 2nd time he said... "did you just call to bitch me out???" I promised him I would take it up with both Uber and Yelp! So... if you choose to order from them... you've been warned!!! If I could give them 0 stars... I would!!!

Fish so good you'll slap your mama! Where do I even begin? A rumbling tummy led me here, and I couldn't be more thrilled at my choice! Of all the menu options, the Catfish Nuggets platter was calling my name. I added a side of mac & cheese, some fried okra and a cold canned soda. A man was busy unpacking a plethora of cakes into the refrigerator and I eenie meenie miney moed my way to a fat chunk of carrot cake with cream cheese icing. There was plenty of available parking though it seemed many customers were walking in from the neighborhood. In addition to indoor dining room tables and bar window seats there is a nice patio with lots of seating with a breeze, a nice option away from the heat of the kitchen. Everyone there was so friendly and they even offer a discount for cash payments. Two televisions inside keep you entertained while you dine or wait for a take out order. Everything was outstanding. The fish & okra was lightly breaded and crispy hot. The mac and cheese was on point & my regards to the baker for that bomb cake. When you grow up in the South you have a certain level of expectation where catfish is concerned and they exceeded every one of them!

Great cod and catfish. Breading was just right and fish was really fresh! Service was really nice and they included extra fish for the one of us who didn't want the sides. Totally satisfied!

Fish was dry! I ordered the halibut. My side was wrong, I got spinach was supposed the green beans. And I didn't get my soda. The waitress brought my order out to the car so I didn't check what I got. First time here. Not again. I spent with tip over 20.00. Won't be back.

I just recently drove by and just saw "fish n chips" and I stopped looked at yelp and made a note to visit that shop soon after reading some of the reviews. Having a fish place close by that isn't good we have been craving a good fish n chip shop lately. So during lunch break today we took a chance and happy we did. First of all the place feels like in the south with a nice front porch where you can sit and eat and inside a friendly chef that greets you. Explains what the different fish are - catfish, basa, halibut, tilapia, salmon and cod are on the menu right now. And some bbq rips for a good surf n turf. This time we got a family meal JR which contains of 8 pieces of fish and besides the coleslaw it has to more Sides (in our case fries and Mac n cheese). Fish wise we choose the cod this time (halibut and salmon would not be in the family meal). The Mac n cheese were delicious and the fries are good. Then Fisch was hot flaky and so yummy. The breading not overpowering the fish and you could taste it is all fresh made the moment you order. All in all very good fish n chips. So we will be back there is so many more fish to explore - and rips lol.

Myself and a friend visited this location on June 21,2024. We were in the mood for fried fish, greens and okra. As we were entering a woman was leaving dressed with an apron on and appeared to work at the restaurant. She was clearly distressed about not being unable to locate her keys. She turned to reenter the establishment and closed the door on us as we entering. We decided to go in anyway although we were confused as to what was taking place. The woman proceeded to go behind the counter and continues to rant and rage about her missing keys. She then says, who is next, who wants fish, very aggressively. The patron ahead of us goes to the counter and she says "What do you want", put that down, I believe it was a menu. She goes on about the keys. Her voice is very loud and aggressive. Needless to say, that was our cue to leave. We did not get to try the food and felt very disrespected and somewhat traumatized. You had to be there. Very unprofessional behavior.

Portland is in need of a Cajun inspired seafood joint. Glad to have finally stumbled by one. The catfish basket is pretty satisfying with very large portions. Only thing is that it's difficult to call and place an order ahead of time as the line is busy or no one picks up. But I the food is really great!

The food was fabulous, freah and fast. Our server was great. May even be owner? Small inside seating with TV. We inhaled our food so quickly that I didn't get pictures. Mark had a 3 piece catfish meal with coleslaw and sauteed cabbage. I had a side of greens and hushpuppies. I think he threw in a coleslaw for me. Everything was delicious! We will be back. They have BBQ and cornbread plus lots of other items. Also you get a discount for paying cash. See menu.

Generous portion, friendly service, person working that day was super nice. Food wise I went with the oyster basket, I don't know what it is but the oysters are alright, they lack in flavor. I looooooove oysters so its hard to say that. Coleslaw was good (it comes with the basket.) I went with the fries as my side. The fries where flimsy, needs a little crunch, the ambience is cozy, and welcoming although it started getting a bit to warm, and I honestly run cold and it's cold outside, might be why the heater is up so high. Maybe adding some music in the background would add a nice touch as well.

So, they took the order online, but no one at restaurants, waited till the time they mentioned. Bad service.

This is my third time here and I have not been disappointed yet. The women working in the kitchen know how to cook fr. Atmosphere is comfortable kinda like home or ya aunties. Food is delicious and they have bomb desserts. I forgot to take a pic but they have a lot of cakes and even banana pudding plus more. Also have a large selection of drinks. 5 stars from me!

if you want fish and chips, and are within the united states, this is absolutely hands down the best place to go. I have never in my life eaten better fish and chips and my travels have taken me east to west and internationally. I can guarantee you haven't had better.

the food was amazing had the talipia and it was cooked to perfection came out very hot with kringle fries which i love the coleslaw was amazing the place was clean and the customer service was fantastic as well definitely recommend this to anyone visiting or locally

Note that this was DELIVERY. Basic frozen & bagged wavy-cut fries, tartar sauce was very good, fish would be okay (cod), except it and the fries were soggy. Coleslaw was 100% "meh". $20 for 2 skinny pieces of codfish, weak fries, meh coleslaw and 20% driver tip. Not again. Added 1 star because I ate it, and resurrected the fries in the air fryer. I'm an excellent cook, so this was an extra disappointment.

When ordering your food take a moment to look into the kitchen it's filthy! Nothing is authentic about this food. The greens come from a can. The owner frying fish rock solid from a sink. Don't use gloves I will never eat here ever again in my life I'm surprised I'm not sick and throwing up

Placed an order and quite a few items were missing from our order. Was very disappointed because this is my first time trying the restaurant . I also was greeted with a "we are closed!" Soon as I was walking in for a pre paid order. I laughed it off but overall customer service could be better.

Food is good most of the time but their attitudes are terrible. I hate ordering from 42nd fish and chips due to having to speak to them and deal with attitudes and harsh demeanors. Not a welcoming environment at all.

Ordered the family meal with 12 pieces of catfish, fries, hush puppies, and sides of mac and cheese and coleslaw for ~$35 before tax/tip. We ordered by calling in and ETA was ~15 mins but when we got there it was an additional 15 minute wait so I would give it 30-45 mins for your order to be ready so just take that into account as there might be a small wait. As for our meal - let's get down to it. + Catfish - The catfish pieces had a nice thin coating of cornmeal that stuck well to the flaky fish and didn't overpower it. The coating was flavored well, but at some bites were a bit over salted for my taste buds. The fish was flaky and were nicely sized. Would I say it's the best I've ever had? No but overall, the fried catfish was light and tasty. + Hushpuppies - These babies were super flavorful. Nice crispy coating and dense inside for being small in size. I'd get these again. + Mac and cheese - Okay mac and cheese but I would add a bit of seasoning it to if if you're eating it by itself. Pairing it with the fish adds a nice flavor contrast and balances each other out. Overall, I thought the family meal deal was worth the price point and the combo was able to be 4 meals. Food wasn't too heavy or oily for being fried and was easy to pop in the air fryer the next day.

I got home five min ago and had a few bites of each. I am not eating any more and I will eat almost anything even if it isn't good. I'm pissed I spent $35.00 on this. Pros: call in ready in 15 min. Cons: hush puppies- soggy/gummy. Not fully cooked and zero flavor. Shrimp-am I at an Asian restaurant and just ordered tempura? Oh and zero flavor. Mac n cheese-gag. Guess what on flavor? Ha...zero. I added salt and pepper. Didn't help. It's also gummy and like it is a week old. Catfish bites- lord help me. Overly breaded. Overly to the point of making it super dry. Bones all throughout. And the skin just makes it weird and chewy like beef jerky. I'm not really sure there was actually catfish meat in any of them. I was tearing each open to see. Self serve station for tarter sauce, cocktail sauce, and ketchup, etc. during COVID not a good idea. The spray can of Lysol hovering over the utensils should make it ok though, huh. I just can't. Glad others had a nice experience here. We did not and will not return.

The Fish and Rib combo hits the spot every time!! Love how the ribs are seasoned and not drowned in BBQ sauce which has the right spices!!

Ordered food, I waited 20 min for pick up. The Guy ( both cooker and cashier) asked for name and didnt start it until mentioned.

I have driven by this place for years. I had no idea. I heard a commercial on the radio! Thank you for advertising! Okay so from the moment I walked into the place I could feel the love. Walking in the counter to order is straight back and the tables are step up around the room. Quiet Cozy and small but very cool. I ordered with the young man at the counter. He was polite and very helpful. I got Cod Basket! It comes with your choice of side. I had to try the Mac and cheese.... See what they was working with. I sat by the window front and looked over the Portland Mercury while waiting. They had some jams going too. Nothing like some good Soul Upbeat music. About 15 minutes later my food was ready. The nice young man told me "Here's your order and have a great day! Aww he melted my heart he was only like 12! He's has better work ethic then some people I know. Lol Oh well! I got to the car and had to peek at my food to see what I had gotten. My pieces of Cod were huge and fried perfectly. The batter was nice and crunchy on outside and was nice and flaky inside. Now to the Mac! They used real cheese you could taste all the good flavors. I didn't even need salt or pepper! I'll be back for sure. I felt Welcomed and at home when I was here.Keep up the wonderful Ambiance and The Fabulous food! I appreciate you!

Food was decent, not as good as was hyped though. Fish sandwich lacked flavor. Too much breading IMO. Better than Sex cake was amazing . That being said dirty establishment needs cleaned top to bottom. Tables were sticky/greasy and difficult to eat off of. Worst part was the difficult and rude staff. This was my first time here, so I asked a couple questions and the gentleman's recommendations. I am not a returning customer. Of course I'm not surprised looking at several reviews about how rude the staff is, but seems that the owner continually defends them or gives excuses for their behavior. This is bad business! The main cashier employee- pretty much could've cared less. Was rushing me along and there was nobody else in line or any reason to hurry up. Only a few people in the establishment, none waiting on food. He was abrasive and short with me. When I asked for more napkins to be put out on the condiments table-he handed me a handful of them and said take them over there myself. No please or thank you. Unbelievable. Won't be back don't appreciate the rudeness and lack of maturity to treat customers this way

I had the catfish basket with coleslaw and greens and a slice of sweet potato pie for dessert. Everything was so good and it even changed my mind about coleslaw. It was all very good!

This place has the smallest parking lot imaginable. It's like they barely have anything at all. There is plenty of street parking around the venue so parking is not an issue. There are some seats on the patio. The inside of the place has two TVs and a good number of tables. The staff is friendly and they cook the fish from order. I got two pieces of very crunchy fish and a side. The food is good. I will return one day.

I'm giving this place 4 stars because they are GOOD. I've been here a few times but this recent time it was an older man cooking by himself and he can for sure COOK! I'll probably try to go when he's the one cooking. The times I have gone, I felt like I so nervous to order because the young man and woman weren't in a great mood. But I kept being kind and ignored the vibe. apparently reading the reviews, the vibe is off sometimes...

Ordered my food 7/27/23 to be delivered. My particular order I selected a 4 piece fish. I don't know if they didn't have the kind of fish I wanted but they sent me ribs instead (which I didn't even know they did) The ribs were small and dry and left much to be desired. Mainly I wanted fish I would have preferred if they would have just canceled the whole order instead of doing any subs.

I ordered the shrimp combo basket. You can order which type of fish you want ( tilapia, Basa, cod, catfish, ) and I ordered the basa fish that was recommended. It's so delicious! I didn't use tartar sauce it was so good. The isn't an excessive amount of batter on either the shrimp or fish.

Good would recommend the catfish and potato salad were it for me the older guy definitely is the one you want making your food !!

The best fish and chips in town three piece fish basket and fries and slaw I couldn't even eat it all they give you a lot of food everything's fresh and handmade I wouldn't go anywhere else they have barbecue ribs shrimp baskets halibut banana pudding all fresh and handmade you better check it out

I go to this place 3 times a week and the ribs the best in town hands down! And the cod is also another favorite

Thank you for a great meal! My friend and I were looking for something close by, friendly and we got lucky. I had the 1/2 rack of ribs which were juicy and tender. My friend had the two piece Basa fish and chips and they were cooked perfect. Aaron, the owner, has added some new help and they are really friendly and helpful. Can't wait to come back and bring more friends, thank you Oh, and try their 'Better Than Sex cake, wow

Came here with my wife yesterday, and the catfish and chips were the best I've had in years. What really impressed me, though, were the collard greens - most restaurants don't get those right, but 42nd Ave's tasted like delicious home cooking, and were so good we will order a big batch next time.

I dunno. I went on Saturday 8-27 4 piece Basa with greens and coleslaw. Older gentleman cooking food was delicious. It was so good I went back Wednesday 8/31. A boss chic was at the helm. Same order. Fish should t be tough. Felt like I got the sloppy seconds. Fish was cut funny so that every bite was chewy. Something was off. Batter fell off. I'll give another shot when The old dude is cooking.

The food here is go good I nearly lost my mind! The servers were also very understanding and helped me pick something I loved. Everyone in PDX should be eating at 42nd Fish & Chipd.

If you're into the classic Black Southern fish basket (and I am), this is the place to be. Fried catfish, greens, slaw, hushpuppies, and a cooler full of really great-looking high-calorie desserts. Plenty spacious too, both indoors and on the large porch -- a pretty good place to feel covid-safe. Also, a good place to get stuffed for under $20. If you're doing takeout from here, I'd just drive up and order. Yes, they take to-go orders by phone but it's really not any faster. If they're not real busy, a takeout order only takes about 15min to prepare.

Good food. Good price, it was fast and easy and friendly service! Collard greens extra yummy too.

This place is perfection! You can't find a place as great as this here! A real talent! Everything tastes amazing.

This had become my go to fish and chips spot, but today was the last time. The last time (2/5) I ordered from 42nd Ave Fish and Chips, the fish was over cooked (or re-heated), very dry and chewy The coating was very hard and crumbly and pulling away from the fish. I thought, maybe last time was just an off day, I'll try them again today (2/17), and it was the same thing. It used to be nice and light, with the right amount for crisp. IDK if they have a new cook or they're re-cooking leftover already cooked fish, but it's horrible and I'm done. I texted my friend today and told her I take back what I said about the place. Don't go, the quality has gone downhill.

I'm thinking this might be a better place to order in and NOT for delivery. First we were missing our cobbler and our key lime tart from the order. About half of the fish was not cooked all the way through tho what was was fairly tasty, excluding the pieces that were soaked in the grease in the bottom of a styrofoam container. The cod had what appeared to be a more cornmeal type breading that you would normally use on Catfish and was a little odd. I would have preferred a more battered fish. The fries the mac and cheese and the coleslaw was all okay nothing to write home about but decent.

I rarely leave yelp reviews. But this one was a necessity! Here visiting from Arizona craving fried fish. The place is small & quaint with a cozy front patio. The food is outstanding. We ordered cat fish with greens & coleslaw. The greens are perfectly seasoned & delicious. The fish seasoned & fried to perfection! We also got fried cod fried shrimp & greens. Same absolutely perfect! Looking forward to one more visit before heading back to the desert!

After our event, we thought we'd try local, we're just right in the area, and was recommended by one of our friends. DH had the cod fillets with fries and cole slaw. He thought they were quite good, except the fish could have been cooked a little longer or crispier. I ordered the halibut fish & chips with side of fries & greens. I wanted corn bread, but they were out. I love the greens! My fish had the corn bread batter, which was also good, but tasteless unless you have tartar sauce and we didn't get one. It was to go, and we added our own condiment once we got home, which improved the taste! The rest room could have been cleaner, but it is the end of the day with 2 hours more to go.

First and last time going there. The cook (middle aged and slim) kept us waiting to order, no welcome. He said "what do you want" I ordered cod and chips, "what size" I asked how big are the pieces, the response was rude... "2,4 or 6 piece"...... We should have left. Others were kept waiting too. The cod was fresh and hot and cooked nice and the fries crispy but I would have preferred flour batter rather than cornmeal and the batter needed (in my opinion) a little salt. The cook brought us the plastic baskets of food and went into the bathroom leaving us without napkins or forks (mainly for the cup of coleslaw). Place is filthy, all the interior doors had black scuff marks on, tables dirty, not wiped after each sitting. I felt uncomfortable as the cook was obviously in a very bad mood so I was glad to get out of there. Condiments i.e ketchup, vinegar and tartar sauce were just sitting on a shelf for use but tartar sauce should have been on ice. Never again!

I read some good reviews and I'm looking for a soul food place so I made the drive to give them a try. I saw they cut and batter their own catfish. I had coleslaw and collard greens and unfortunately is not pleased. The fish had no flavor and the tartar sauce was bland so no help there. The collard greens were made with smoked turkey and didn't pack enough flavor and the coleslaw was also bland. They had a lot of repeat customers so there seems to many who do like them but I won't be back.
