Best Anticipated Austin Restaurant Openings in 2024 - Eater Austin

"The essential barbecue truck is finally opening a physical restaurant in Austin proper this year (there had been one out in Smithville for two years). Owner and pitmaster Tom Micklethwait is turning the truck’s commissary and catering kitchen space into a whole market-style restaurant with indoor and outdoor areas, all the better to enjoy the smoked meats, sides, and sweets. Once the new Micklethwait restaurant opens, its food truck and beer bar Saddle Up will close at the end of the year." - Nadia Chaudhury

Yelp
Oh my! Micklewaithe has been a favorite of ours for years, so of course when we heard they were opening a new location there was a fear it just wouldn't be the same - and it's not- it is even better if that is possible!! The building itself is beautiful and the outdoor seating area- next level. Okay and that's even before the food. The pulled lamb? Nothing tastier, brisket - insane , turkey moist and flavorful and don't get me started on the sides!!! Beet salad, coleslaw, Mac & cheese - everything top notch. We drove from New Braunfels just to eat here!!!

Yelp
Invited to a soft opening at the new location on Tanney St., in Austin. As you can imagine there was a line, yet everyone waiting was in good spirits. It didn't take too long to get inside. Tom Micklethwait truly has smoking meat down to a craft. They offer brisket, sausage, turkey, pork, beef and lamb. When i judge a BBQ restaurant, the quality of the sides has to match the effort put into the meat. The evidence is there. Macaroni and cheese, greens, beans, fresh green beans, chile cheese grits and the freshest bread I've ever experienced with BBQ. Then there are the desserts, banana pudding, a home made fudge brownie and others. Micklethwait has taken his craft to the next level. Price, taste, value and ambiance. All the boxes are checked. One thing I noticed was that the staff was working in harmony. No one seemed stressed out or over whelmed. Polite, friendly and sincere. There is seating inside, with a huge outdoor seating area outside. So head on over to East Austin and give them a try. Parking may be a bit of a challenge. Street parking is available, so be respectful of the neighbors. Michael C. - Georgetown, Tx.

Yelp
I don't think it's my favorite BBQ spot but there are some notable items here (mostly the sides). Brisket - Solid brisket, I did find my pieces to have too thick of a fat slice between them. I usually like a more moist fatty brisket, but the fat was a bit much I think. And I would've liked if the rest of the brisket was more moist. Beef Ribs - these were good, they didn't fall of the bone with moisture as much as I'd like but they did come off pretty easily. Sausage - I actually really enjoyed the sausage, very juicy and tasty! Lemon Poppy Slaw - probably the best slaw I've ever had at a BBQ spot. I usually get tired of slaw when it's either too creamy or too vinegary, but these really hit the spot and worked perfectly with the meats when put in sandwiches. Herbed Potato Salad - might also be the best potato salad I've had as well! It was almost mashed liked mashed potatoes but with still some chunks of potato (but softened). It was also really refreshing and I didn't tire of it at all as I continued eating it. Their sides here really shone, even though I think the BBQ wasn't the best I've had in Austin and didn't really excel in any particular meat.

Yelp
My favorite Austin BBQ spot. The brisket is consistently incredibly flavorful and perfectly crusted. They always have unique meat offerings (venison, lamb, etc.) and amazing sides. The texture of their beets is perfect, their bbq sauces are homemade and so damn fine. There is almost always a line, but it moves very fast! The service is great, and the outdoor seating is ample.

Yelp
The potato salad and brisket was the best for this place. I would say overall, the food is 4.7, the sausages were somehow very dry this time. Service was excellent, we ordered online and it was timely. The place was in a shaded tent area. The benches were clean and long enough to fit a crowd.

Yelp
Nut allergy friendly! Nothing I ordered had any issues and I don't think they have anything with nuts. First off, Google Maps takes you to a weird spot. They do have some parking. We got in around 11:30AM on a Sunday and were shocked that there was no line after driving by the absurdity that is Franklin's. I came with an 18-pack of beer prepared to share with people! Anyway... They do have a bar at Saddle Up. It took 22 minutes for us to receive the buzzer notification for our Family Pack (5-6 people). We added a 0.5lb of the lamb. I'd definitely do the beef rib here if I return. Anyway, that family pack fed 9 people comfortably! Everyone had their own favorites. Online it says that they give 3 quarts of sides but on site I was offered 4 pints so I'm not sure which is correct. Highlights were the cucumber salad and grits for the sides, and the sausage for meats. Their spicy barbecue sauce was also phenomenal. Will happily return to try their beef rib some day.

Yelp
I am visiting Texas and was looking for some good bbq and this place was recommended to me and I see why! Wow, enjoyed my whole experience. The staff were very friendly and provided great food recommendations. I tried the 2 meat plate, ribs and brisket with grits and potato salad. The meat was tender and had a great smoked flavor. And the grits were amazing, I typically don't get grits but was open to try something new and I'm so glad I did. My husband tried their frito pie and Mac and cheese and it was also very flavorful. They have plenty of outside seating, some indoor seating. They also have drinks inside with a variety of options to pair with bbq.

Yelp
We recently walked up to the new location, and visited Micklethwait when they opened in our neighborhood! We walked in around 3 and they were putting up a sold out sign, but we were truly just looking for some drinks, and they let us in. When I got up to the counter, they still had food, just not brisket. We ended up ordering some jalapeno sausage, green beans and two draught beers. Unfortunately, something happened with keg so we were given cans, but I'm unsure if there was a price difference, and nobody seemed concerned, so who knows! The inside was so nice, and welcoming! The outside yard was quite large, and dog friendly, with lots of room for everyone! One of the staff members brought us out a huge container of mac and cheese and our lives changed in an instant. Holyyyyy heck that mac was SO good! Wow! I can't speak much to the food this go around, but we'll definitely become quite regular to this newly converted church of bbq delightfulness!

Yelp
So glad our Austin friends recommended this place. Everything was really good, but the beef rib was the best thing I've ever had. If I were to go back, I would order the beef rib and a couple sides. I particularly liked the grits, mac n cheese, and potato salad. The pickles are really good too.

Yelp
first visit to their new brick and mortar restaurant : was so quaint ; inside an old church. The outdoor patio was huge. The new place did not disappoint Food just as good as ever; great variety and offer so much more than just barbecue. The sides are gourmet , homemade bread. can park on the street they even had collard greens well seasoned

Zack B.

Yelp
Great service! The faces are friendly and they remembered our names when we came back the next day. We make it our business to try a bbq place on every trip we make and they didn't disappoint! We felt super cool also being some of the few who'll get to eat here before the grand opening. Everything was great. We got 2 three meat plates. I think the ribs were the highlight right after the pulled lamb. The turkey was sooo juicy. All of the sausage is good. We didn't get it on the tray but bought some of them all to go. The sides were okay. I think the Mac and cheese and the beets were the best! Also the slaw. I bought a container of that Togo. The beans had a great flavor but they were undercooked. I still ate them tho lol Don't forget the pickles. I got some of those to go too. The ambiance is also cool. It was cold out so we dined in. It has the feel of an old school church. Much like my childhood one. The patio will be perfect for an Austin summer. I'll definitely be back next time in Austin. I think my ticket will be a three plate- ribs, sausage, and turkey with Mac, beets and slaw on the side

Yelp
Tucked away on Rosewood, just behind Saddle Up sits the very cutely designed Micklethwait truck, serviced by a very friendly and knowledgeable team. My favorite frito pie in Austin! Need I say more?! While it isn't in the bag, it is topped with a heaping piece of brisket, and the size is generous all around. All of the sides are delicious including a creamy and delicious mac and cheese and rotating salad options. I am a huge brisket fan but don't sleep on the duck taco. I love that they integrated tacos into the menu -- Very Austin of them! The setting is lovely, there are tons of picnic tables, various amounts of shade, and Saddle Up for delicious none alcoholic and alcoholic beverages! Sometimes there is a DJ back there adding a fun ambiance. Lots of parking spots and bike racks, making it an easy meet up for those near and far.

Yelp
Thursday 7/25/2024 I was highly interested in this spot due to it being the highest rated bbq spot on google and yelp. Also word of my mouth from the people in Austin grew my anticipation even more. On my first visit to Austin in 2023, I missed out on going but this time I finally went. The service was pretty great as she was nice and very helpful. Also the pricing was pretty good to as it's one of the only Texas bbq spots (I've been to) that let you order the meat through 2 meat plates or 3 meat plates rather than straight up by the pound. For my visit, I got a 2 meat plate of brisket & ribs with sides of mac n cheese & beans $20, 1/4 pork shoulder $6.50, and 1/4 pulled lamb $7. - The Mac n cheese was pretty underwhelming, it was okay but it didn't have a lot of flavor for me. - The beans were alright but they weren't the beans I was expecting from a Texas bbq spot, I was more so expecting a bbq beans type of side. - The ribs and brisket were very tender and they were a solid choice but I've had better. - The pork shoulder really impressed me as I did not expect it to be that good. I'd honestly say it was the star of the show as the flavor and taste were on point. - The pulled lamb also impressed me as it was way better than I expected and I would say it was the second best item I had. - the sauces were underwhelming as well, they were just okay but not good in my opinion. All in all, micklethwait is a pretty decent bbq spot but I can't say it's the best Texas bbq I've had. If you were to visit, I would highly recommend you at least get the pork shoulder and pulled lamb as those were quite the surprise for me.

Yelp
I cannot believe we live across the street from this glorious meat oasis. The macaroni and cheese is everything you expect it to be in the South. The brisket tacos pack so much taste it's like a burst of absolute bliss to mouths The sausage sandwich is the stuff dreams are made of. Great service. Fun, outdoor, family-style seating. Located behind Saddle Up.

Yelp
Micklethwait is a bbq place that serves its food via a food truck. They have outdoor seating with fans and free water. I came on a Thursday during lunch time. The wait was not that long at all, and I got my food fairly quickly. I decided to get the 2 meat plate, but I also liked that they had options for other mains like tacos. For the 2 meat plate, I got brisket and pulled lamb with a side of beans and jalapeño cheese grits. The brisket was so tender and juicy. The lamb was also delicious and easy to eat. They both paired well with the sauces on the table. Grits aren't exactly my favorite but the jalapeño grits definitely are one of the better grits I've had. It is not spicy at all though, more cheesy if anything. The beans were good. Felt satisfied by the end of the meal.

Yelp
By far, Micklethwait was our favorite meal of our Houston and Austin trip. We got the 3 meat + 2 sides plate. We selected pork ribs, brisket, sausage, grits, and cabbage. The brisket and grits were the stars of the plate, but everything else was tasty too. We arrived around 11:50 AM on Thursday, and there was only 1 person ahead of us in line. By the time we had finished around 12:20, there was about ten people in line. If the line had been shorter, we would've gone back for seconds. All in all, we were very impressed with the food, especially considering that the initial wait time was so short. Unfortunately, we visited on the second to last day of our trip, so we didn't have the chance to go back.

Audrey K.

Yelp
We saw the wait at La Barbeque and decided to come here instead. The wait for food and drinks was under 10 minutes! They had drinks next door where we got iced coffees. They also had Arnold palmers, beer and wine. The two of us were satisfied with the three meat plate and one lamb taco each. The only other bbq I've been to in Austin so far has been Terry Blacks and so I'm going to compare it to that. The ambiance was very laid back, cookout style in the backyard. We sat at picnic tables outside and shared the bbq sauce and hot sauce with the table. The mac and cheese was delicious. The sauce was a bit thin but it doesn't lack in flavor. The sausage wasn't too flavorful and neither was the taco. The sausage was smoky but it doesn't amount to the jalepeno cheddar at Terrys. The lamb in the taco was tender but the taco overall didn't have much flavor. The brisket was tender but it wasn't as juicy. I chose to dip it in some bbq sauce which was really watery but it had a nice kick to it which tasted like apple cider vinegar. I enjoyed the thick pickles very much because they had a really big crunch and the lemon poppy slaw was amazing!!!! I'd say I enjoyed the sides more here than Terry Blacks, which I anticipated but, they missed a bit in the meat category.

Yelp
Great place great atmosphere. It worth a try. The meat is tender and juicy. I'd recommend pork rib and brisket. The service is nice.

Regis G.

Yelp
Everything is excellent, love brisket, beef rib and sausage. Do not sleep on the Mac n cheese!

Lola D.

Yelp
We came hoping for excellent barbecue based on so reviews and videos. Unfortunately we did not have a great experience. The staff was kind but the food was lacking. We got a 3 meat plate with brisket, Tex Czech sausage and carnitas (since they were sold out of ribs). The brisket was dry and dense, the carnitas meat was cold and also dried up. The sausage was average but didn't blow us away. The macaroni and pickles were my favorite things on the tray. Wish we could have had a better experience.

Yelp
A visit to Austin was made much better with a visit to this cozy restaurant. We sat outside under warmish dark skies and tried the brisket, pork ribs, lemon poppy slaw, jalapeño cheese grits, Frito pie, and beet salad. Order at the front, pick up when called.

Yelp
There's well over 1000 reviews, so there's not a lot more than can be said. However, I should point out they only have about a dozen parking spaces along with about a dozen picnic tables not including some four tops scattered on the property. From the look of the older reviews, it looks like they have recently moved into a new trailer. I got here 15 minutes before they opened on a Saturday and was surprised to find no one standing in line and plenty of parking. That's definitely not the case if you were at Franklin's just down the street. If you're dining here, you'll be sitting outside, but it's fairly shady with several misting fans to help out with the heat. Considering how much business this place does, I'm surprised they haven't transitioned to an enclosed brick and mortar establishment with AC. One thing you'll notice, they do not have a porta potty, so you'll have to go inside the Saddle Up bar next-door to use the restroom and to purchase drinks. Once you place your order you'll be handed a buzzer to let you know when everything is ready which keeps the line moving. My wait was less than 10 minutes and they accept cash and credit. They do offer free water from a cooler. This place is dog friendly and they even offer some water bowls to fill for the pooch. I got the three meat plate to enjoy now and some barbecue to go. I have to admit I enjoyed the two sides that came with the meat, although I was surprised they don't offer up any bread (guess I should have asked). The rub on the brisket and the smoke ring were exceptional. The rib and the sausage were also 4 to 5 stars. Apparently they do not offer baby back ribs. Since you'll be dining outside, you will be waving off the intrusive flies, and you will be under the watchful eye of the ever present grackle. They do offer a great vinegar barbecue sauce on every table, which is unnecessary since the barbecue speaks for itself. By the time I left at 11:30 there was less than 25 people here with a couple of parking spaces still available. Check out the photos below for more information.

Yelp
The hubby and I arrived at Micklethwait on a Thursday afternoon. It wasn't super crowded so we were able to order and find a seat within 10 minutes. We ordered the brisket Frito pie which was very good but way too spicy. We pushed the jalapeños to the side but it was either the chili or salsa verde that continued to kill our tastebuds. A little warning would've been nice, so we'd know not to order it. We then shared the two meat plate with brisket and sausage with a side of mac and cheese and potato salad. The brisket had a nice smoke ring to it, sausage was our favorite part of the meal, while the mac and cheese and potato salad lacked salt. Not my favorite bbq place in Austin but worth trying for the sausage alone. The service was lackluster. They weren't rude but not friendly whatsoever which caught me off guard, since Austin seems like a very friendly place.

Yelp
So to start... we visit all bbq places and over our journey have become a bit of what some might call bbq snobs. So here we go. The brisket and ribs are literally fall apart tender. Everything is so moist. Their seasonings are more subtle than most BBQ places that are pepper and salt heavy. Hubby says they earn a 5 based on their own taste merit, not relative to other places. Potato salad is very good and different with many herbs. The cucumber salad has apples and is more refreshing with a light, thin, creamy dressing. Sauces taste like they have a bit of apple cider vinegar. Good and different. Now, in a side by side comparidon ...Terry Blacks bbq is way more my "plate of bbq", but that's just me. They also have frito pie brisket... so that is a point in their favor. Food truck setup with most seating outside. They have very limited inside seating at the Saddle Up. Saddle Up is also where you go to get your drinks. Serve yourself. That means no A/C .... just saying.

Cindy S.

Yelp
We were there on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025 @ 12:30 pm. We had a little wait, but that was expected; but really only waited 7-10 minutes. Very nice staff & helpful. Food service was great. The food itself was awesome, the Mac & Cheese side dish is to die for. Would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Stephanie K.

Yelp
I may not have been born here, but that makes me ever the more scrutinizing of barbecue, and this is absolutely sublime. Brisket is perfectly peppered and smoked, moist like I like it, with a Carolina-style BBQ sauce that's not too heavy on the vinegar. Sausage is excellent, and a 2-meat plate is generous. The sides send them into 5-stars - rarely do we enjoy all bases covered at one joint, but Micklethwait knocks it out of the park with jalapeño cheesy grits (like mac 'n cheese but more Southern, slightly less guilty) crunchy house made pickles, and the very best purple cabbage slaw I ever did meet. Wholesome, delicious, satisfying. I'd move in but this one is still serving from a truck - not too much longer and they'll have a dine-in brick & mortar, dangerous!

Yelp
Was in town recently for the UT-UGA game and decided to undertake a BBQ tour of Austin and surrounds. Context: I grew up in TX and went to school in Austin. I've had plenty of BBQ both within and without TX. I did not try all of the spots that I wanted to this trip in Austin, notably missing out on Terry Black's, Interstellar, and LeRoy and Lewis, amongst others. I am judging BBQ relative to all other BBQ out there, not just vs TX-style or Austin BBQ. Goodness, Micklethwait is excellent. Fantastic setting - outdoor seating with old-time country music playing. Indoor bar with beers available. The food is downright superb: brisket is packed full of flavor (9/10), as are the ribs (8.5/10). Sides are quality (7.5/10), but the true star of the show, what the bartender referred to as their "secret weapon" was the barbacoa (10/10) - smoky, with a crunchy exterior and juicy interior, this was downright amazing. Can't wait to return to what seems to still be somewhat of a hidden gem of Austin BBQ.

Natalya C.

Yelp
I never leave reviews, but I felt like I needed to leave one this time. I used to come once a month when it was a food truck. Now that they have moved to this new location I feel like the quality has gone down drastically. I don't think I will be coming back unfortunately.
google avatar

Paige K.

Yelp
We came midday to Micklethwait and had a few people ahead of us in line but after placing our order, our food didn't come out for 40 mins. Being it's all pre smoked we were a bit surprised and so we're the people around us. The food itself was good - the lamb was tasty but a lil dry, the brisket was decent but I had better over the weekend, thso grits just good not great but the beets were delicious. I like the open set up and that they were dog friendly but given the wait and compared to other bbq we had in Austin, don't think we would be back.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Wow! Is the perfect brisket sandwich out there??? Yes, yes it is. You can certainly find one here. They even make their own bread. Excellent grits and potato salad sides to boot. Only one kind of BBQ sauce, but it was very tasty. Quick moving line, seating inside and outside available. Go here. Trust me, they didn't make Top 50 for no reason.

Yelp
I can say with honesty that I don't think you can get bad bbq in Austin, TX! I've been to a handful of bbq spots in Austin and none did wrong. I tried MCM for the first time on my most recent trip to Austin. This restaurant is set up with a trailer to take the orders, a second trailer that seems to smoke the meat, and a separate building with drinks, coffee bar, and restrooms. It's all outdoor bench seating, overhead covering and lighting. The line to order was relatively short based on what a local told us. The menu is the right size, not too many items, just the right meat options and a bunch of sides. I ordered a 1lb beef rib, poppy slaw, and potato salad. The beef rib was really tender, fell off the bone with no knife needed! Flavorful without any sauce, but there is a sauce on the tables if you want to add it. I only saw one bbq sauce option. I tried it and enjoyed it. This is a highly rated bbq place in Austin, definitely try it when you're there.
google avatar

Taylor S.

Yelp
The ambiance is fun and outdoors would be great on a tad warmer day! Parking was easy! We got pulled lamb and brisket! The brisket was a little too fatty but all so tasty! Grab a beer inside the saddle and wait for your food inside--it was a bit blustery out for us!
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Everything here is good! I tried several selections here and was impressed each time. Brisket is what you definitely want but also try their frito pie. The place is outdoors, so plan for a nice picnic experience and the staff are well informed on their menu and how the food is prepared. Definitely top of my BBQ list.
google avatar

Gregg Y.

Yelp
I'll let the locals confirm this but I feel like you can throw a rock in Austin, Texas and probably hit a bbq spot. And while I haven't tried all the bbq spots in Austin, (Franklin's included) I am happy to say that Micklethwait has quickly become my favorite. I ordered a two meat plate: brisket and spare ribs with mac n cheese and jalapeno grits on the side. -Brisket: some of the best brisket I've ever had. -Spare ribs: great flavor and with a good bite to it. -Mac n Cheese: better than most. -Jalapeno Grits: stole the show. Amazing. You order at the window and they give you a buzzer to let you know when your order is ready. It's mostly outdoor seating, but there are a few seats inside by the bar if you get lucky. The whole setup at Micklethwait feels like a bbq with the family and I feel like that played a small factor into my enjoyment of the entire experience. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Lawddddd this line was deceiving. It didn't look that long but it moved so slow. Lesson learned is to not show up starving. Ultimately, the little alcohol shack next door saved us with delicious micheladas to keep us from hangriness. Bbq was yummy and lots of side options!

Fred F.

Yelp
Went to the new place yesterday It's in a horrible part of east Austin Parking is a joke Got 2 meat platter Beans were fantastic potato salad was fantastic The brisket was a little over done little tough Tex Mex sausage is good Has a different texture to it and a kick on finish FYI prices on yelp are wrong everything is $2 higher

Yelp
Taste: 5/5 Value: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Food truck with lots of tables!! Loved every bite

Yelp
Some pros, some cons about the Austin bbq experience- Pros: pork ribs were fire 5/5. The flavor of the rub, the meat is so juicy, everything about the pork ribs was delish. Brisket was pretty decent, the outer edges and fats melted in your mouth but towards the interior center of the cut it did get dry and tough and chewy. Then jalapeño cheddar grits were phenomenal! Best side so smooth and so creamy, I had never tried grits before and this blew my expectation out of the park. Mushroom taco was delicious from the sauce to the juicy mushrooms loved every bite! I liked the casual table settings and their homemade bbq sauce and eating outside. Cons: the wait!! It's insane how long people in Texas are willing to wait for barbecue. I think from arrival to receiving our food took about 1.5 hours (still less than the 3 hours at franklins but my gosh who has that time)? I thought waiting to order would be the main wait, but even once we ordered it was a good half hour to forty minutes to receive food. Add a second person taking orders, there's enough space to double the smoke pit capacity, do something the wait is too long! The beet side dish to me was very bland. I love beets I expected them to be flavored or pickled or something interesting but it was just beets with some cream or something added and they tasted too sweet and too bland. Also, I feel like they didn't put enough meat on a three meat plate, it definitely wasn't enough for two people and I feel I got more meat on my two meat plate than my friends did on their three so a little inconsistent there. I'm glad I tried the Austin bbq "experience" but I don't think it was that great to warrant going back. I can't believe the long wait times and expensive prices to fetch your own food and bake under the heat.

Jonathan W.

Yelp
Great BBQ tacos. We went here for lunch and had a sandwich and the tacos both were very good. Tacos edged out the sandwich. Has one pork shoulder and one brisket. I have had a lot of BBQ around the world and this is honestly some of the best I have had. It is well done good smoke and their sauce on the tacos was complementing and did not hide the meats flavor. Go. You won't be disap

Yelp
The service was great; the lady that took our order was very friendly! The food was good but the brisket in my sandwich wasn't as tender as i had hoped. The mac n cheese was very tasty, id get it again. My boyfriend got the turkey and he thought it was amazing! It was very juicy and flavorful. He got the two meat plate for $20 and the portions were huge! I'll come back but next time i will get a turkey sandwich instead.

Yelp
Stopped by Micklethwait's as Franklin's changed their hours and are not open weekends. Their loss. Our gain. BBQ was absolutely delicious and so were the sides we tried...potato salad and summer cucumber salad. Had the three meats platter of brisket, turkey and ribs. Would have loved to try the pork shoulder, but they were out. Little house next to food truck called Saddle Up supplied great selection of drinks and some desserts. Super friendly staff there and handy!
google avatar

Yelp
There is a reason this place is on yelp's top 100 Bbq in tue United States and terry black's and Franklin are not. Iykyk. Beer garden. And bomb bbq. Brisket is out sight. Folks are friendly. Definitely not a cook out. Don't miss out. And you can order ahead and avoid the lines and pretend you just did it qued in your own backyard. Don't miss out. I heard they are moving to their own brick and mortar. Thank you kindly Micklethwait and Saddle Up!!

Yelp
Stopped by this establishment while on vacation to Austin. What a fantastic lunch! Be prepared tobwaddle out as the portions are LARGE. Jalapeño and cheese grits were terrific. Pork shoulder was tender and smoked to perfection. Don't miss this place when in town!!

Yelp
WOW. If you want great BBQ but you don't want the lines, Micklethwait is your spot. Pros: + Short line @ 12PM on a Friday + Friendly staff all around + Indoor and outdoor seating available Cons: - N/A What We Ordered: + Beef Short Rib, 5/5 + Brisket, 4/5 The BEEF SHORT RIBS were out of this world delicious! Juicy, tender, and fell right off the bone. $35 per pound and sold by the weight, so ours was about 1.3LBS? The BRISKET was good, but the leaner part of the brisket was not as moist. You can see in the photo how not juicy it is. According to my Texan cowboy, you can order it extra moist? But he forgot. Oh well. The meats come with Texas toast, pickles, and onions. They pair so well with the meats. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this spot and definitely coming back if I ever visit Texas again. But I'm gonna bring a takeout salad with me next time cause this meal makes me feel like my arteries are gonna instantly clog. SIDE NOTE: holy smokes the portions are huge down here. I wanted to try the Pork Spare Ribs and the Sausages, but I knew my stomach wasn't going to fit all that food.

Yelp
Some of the best brisket in Austin and when taking into account how short the line is, it's the best wait-time-to-quality-of-BBQ ratio in town!! Waiting anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes you will get amazing brisket, sausage, and turkey, great sides, but only mediocre ribs. The BBQ sauces and hot sauces spread around the tables are also lovely. The parking lot is small so you might need to park on the street, but there are lots of covered picnic tables in front of the airstream restaurant. They also have many drinks and pastries available in the building next door.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic. The Sope was a special item. So loaded, I could not pick it up with my hand (I mean, I did, but quickly put it down because it wasn't stable). Loaded with lamb and an assortment of toppings and spices. The Sope itself was unctuous and lovely to bite into. The sides were also very good, but the meat was perfect, clearly the star of the show.

Yelp
I am drooling thinking about micklethwait - wandering LA looking for a beef rib or brisket that is similar (nothing really beats it). Came to Austin on a little trip determined to find a 10/10 bbq spot - this one definitely took the cake for me. Their beef rib was huge, so tender, fatty, and flavorful. BBQ sauce is a nice addition but not needed! The brisket was the same, portion size was great - i love myself a fatty brisket that cuts like butter and melts in your mouth. Not sure about parking since we Ubered over, but when we went on a Sunday afternoon the place was pretty empty (honestly i think we went at an odd time so that might be why). There was plenty of seating - you can sit inside (which we did because it was scorching hot) and lots of seating outside. We ordered at the truck outside, they gave us a buzzer, and we grabbed the food when it was done. We got a beef rib and brisket (not sure how many lbs) and it fed 4 of us (we did go on a little burger tour beforehand so not sure if we could've eaten more). Honestly so good, must try!! I will definitely be back on my next trip.

Yelp
Some of the best barbecue I've ever had. I had the pulled lamb, pork ribs, brisket, sausage, jalapeño cheese grits, beet salad and lemon poppyseed slaw. All of the meats were exceptional, pulled lamb is a bit unique and I'm so glad that I got it. It's honestly really hard to say which meats I liked best because they were all great. The cheddar jalapeño grits were exceptionally good, one of the best bbq sides I've ever had. The beets were pretty good and the coleslaw was alright, I would try something different next time.

Yelp
Was able to walk here from downtown. There are lots of outdoor seating. There was no wait when I came around 12pm on a Friday. Got the 3 meat plate with brisket, pulled lamb, pork rib, and it came with 2 sides which I got the mac n cheese and lemon poppy coleslaw. The meats were all tender and seasoned as expected for any bbq. The bbq sauce was a nice complement to the meats. The coleslaw and pickles were refreshing. I enjoyed the mac n cheese as well. Texture of the macaroni and flavors of the melted cheese was balanced. The plate also came with sliced white bread. There's a small parking lot.
