The 8 Best Restaurants in Taos, New Mexico | Eater

"Five Star is the go-to burger spot in Taos, serving juicy half-pound patties topped with fancified fixings. The namesake burger gets applewood-smoked bacon and gorgonzola crumbles, while the Taos burger comes topped with strips of fried green chile, barbecue sauce, and cheddar cheese. There are also above-average salads available, but we all know what you’re here for. [$$]" - Justin De La Rosa

My husband and I weekly for dinner before heading back to Albuquerque, the good was delicious, but the service was lacking to say the least! Our server was a little busy, but treated each table completely different. One lady who was refilling drinks literally ran into me and didn't say anything, no apology or even acknowledgement!!! That same lady was also smacking her gum the entire time 🤬 shouldn't even have gum as front of house! Now for the good stuff, the food! We got the sweet potato fries and the fried green chile strips to start with, both were super yummy! I got the bleu cheese burger, which was phenomenal!!! Hubs got just a cheeseburger & onion rings, both of which were yummy as well. The green chile mayo was delicious as well!

Stopped in for lunch the previous day and had one of the best burgers EVER. Came back for breakfast this morning and had the Taos Burrito. So tasty! Good mix of traditional and New Mexican breakfast options. Thank you Yvonne for your wonderful service.

Google
Friendly employees, lots of smiles. Our takeout order was ready on time and was ...perfect! Lots of condiments and napkins (you'll need those!) and our burgers were grilled superbly. We all had ordered onion rings - and again, done perfectly, which at other restaurants is not always the case. 5 Star Burgers deserves those 5 stars. Keep doing what you're doing! If you're in Taos, stop here, you will not regret it. YUM

Google
Came for a late lunch and this restaurant did not disappoint. It looked very nice inside and the staff was very caring. I got the bison burger with green chilies and pepper jack cheese. I appreciated that they had coffee as it was a really cold afternoon, and the creamer came in a little serving pitcher, which was a nice touch. I did get the large basket of fries. It was a straightforward, delicious burger for a reasonable price.

Google
Grabbed lunch at 5 Star Burgers while in Taos on business and had a great burger. Service was prompt and food came quickly, other than our drinks, which they forgot until after our food came and we asked about them. Legit burgers - tried the bacon and bleu cheese and it was good! I'd recommend a stop if you're in Taos!

Our first day here and we're looking for a good place to eat. A review led us to this place. You must get the sweet potato fries and maple cream dip. I'm still drooling over it! This place did not disappoint!!

Google
Love the food but service was UNPLEASANT. I would have given a 5 star review if it wasn't for the bad encounter. I have a disturbing experience to tell. So, my father, sister, and I went to this restaurant not too long ago. We got some lamb hamburgers which were phenomenal. We asked them to be fully cooked, thankfully they were fully cooked which I am grateful for. But, what we didn't really like was the service. The 3 of us came in and there was a lady at the right side where they have cutlery and napkins. The moment we stepped in there, that woman looked at us and she just stared at us, she made an unpleasant look (disgusted face) but what bothered us was that she was mainly staring right at my dad w/ a disgusted face! She didn't even greet us or most importantly guide us on what we where supposed to do. Mind you, that was our 1st time being there. So, my dad awkwardly leads us to a table. Which we later found out that we were SUPPOSED be taken to a table by the employees NOT us choosing a table. But, how where we supposed to know when that lady wouldn't say anything and just made faces and stare. Again, we were new to that place, it was our very 1st time being there. Anyway, we walk to a table and sit. Another lady with blonde hair attends us and asked what we wanted. We ordered our hamburgers and fries and waited. A kind lady came to refill our drinks once and awhile which we do appreciate her kind behavior. But, we still felt uncomfortable being there just because of that weird disrespectful encounter. While we waited and even after we got our food, we noticed that the same lady that gave my dad a disgusted face would welcome other people with NO PROBLEM. She would greet them, ask how many people were going to eat, and if they were going to eat outside or inside. From there we clearly knew she had a problem with us in particular. We know she had a problem with us because she welcomed everybody else in there like a customer should be treated. I know there are bad customers who treat employees badly but we are not the kind to disturb, make a mess or yell at someone. We were there to SIMPLY EAT in peace. Which at the end we rushed eating because it was uncomfortable. Oh, once we did finish, they immediately gave us the check, we paid, and I kid you not it seemed as if they were rushing us to get out. Anyway, I got no problem with her attending people nicely but what bothered us was her unwelcoming stare especially to my father. Which it bothered the 3 of us. I don't know if this would bother other people but for us it was disturbing. We didn't have a stupid costume nor did we look funny. I know it because everybody in that room had no problem with us being there, people minded their business and so did we. It is very unfortunate because this was our 1st time going there and instead of having a pleasant time and meal, we had an uncomfortable meal & encounter just because ONE employee decided to STARE. What kind of service is that?! What she did was disrespect. So, food was excellent but HER service was not great. I do appreciate the other employees who did their job and not stare. Especially the one who refilled our drinks and would offer other customers more tea. Sorry for the long rant but I felt like I had to share this unpleasant experience making it all an uncomfortable meal which could of been avoided.

Flavor: A Service: B Tea: B Solo dining: A My brother told me this was the best burger in Taos and - after experiencing it for myself - I have no doubt. The patty is juicy and flavorful - not thin but not overly thick. I got the green chile cheeseburger per my brother’s recommendation and it did not disappoint. But now I want to try them all. The fries are great but the sweet potato fries with that maple sauce stole my heart. Greatness all around. If you love burgers like I do then get yourself over to Five Star.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic! To keep this somewhat short & sweet: we had an awful experience at a different local burger place, which was close to our hotel; we ended up leaving before our (paid for) food even came out & we went to 5 Star Burgers, which was the best move because it was DELICIOUS. Everything from games on TV, service, to the menu/food was phenomenal & we will definitely go back when in Taos! That green chili burger & mixed fries with the sweet dipping sauce- YUM! Only thing that could be better is more TVs because Taos really lacks in proper sports bars, but you will not be disappointed here :)

Yelp
5 Star Burgers used to be my go-to burger spot. The burgers were always fantastic, thick and juicy, and the Nutty Quinoa Salad was my favorite. [That says a lot when I would consistently order a salad over a burger.] It was always filling. Recently though, the quality has not been the same. My last in-restaurant visit came with poor service from our waitress. I know it was busy, but it still felt like we were brushed off and rushed to leave. The last two DoorDash orders were also disappointing. The quinoa salad was almost all spinach, with just a couple spoonfuls of quinoa and barely any of the gorgonzola I paid extra for. Even my son, who usually loves the burgers, noticed they were not as tasty as they used to be. I understand the cost of ingredients is high right now and that makes things harder for restaurants. Still, I know how good this place can be, and I hope they can get back to the level of quality and consistency that made me a regular.

Yelp
Didn't do a whole lot for me my first visit, but intrigued enough by some of the menu items, we will go back. The service was great and the restaurant is clean and everyone friendly. We will try it again at least 1 more time.

Yelp
Quality of food is good, service is efficient, it's a nice place to eat. I like that they offer gluten free. Cost is high... but where isn't food expensive?
google avatar

Peg D.

Yelp
Cute place to enjoy lunch. Attentive service. I had the chop chop salad--really good. My dining partner had a burger & definitely enjoyed. Definitely worth a stop.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious chile cheese burger! The menu had lots of tasty options. The sweet potato fries had a delicious and addicting maple cream sauce!!! So tasty and memorable. The green chile cheese burger had a tasty green chile mayo that added to the flavor. Next time I go I plan on trying a salad or their bowls. Great service, nice bar area, friendly, prompt and clean. I was there on a Wednesday night and it was pretty busy but no wait.

Toni J.

Yelp
The last few visits have been terrible. Service particularly. i enjoy the food, but service is what keeps people coming back too. We ate here for my birthday and the service was horrible, after telling my family how good it was.. that was disappointing. We're sat near the bathroom and the smell was not pleasant. I thought that was a one off.. but since then it's been the same. I'll just take my business to Orlando's now.
google avatar

Lau H.

Yelp
Wow when I drove by this place I thought it was a fast food joint but finally decided to drop in. We were seated and there's a full bar inside as well. We ordered the 5star and Taos burger with truffle fries and omg... this place is delicious! I'm throughly impressed and will come back again
google avatar

Morgann G.

Yelp
The burgers were good. However, the service was less to be desired. We barely got checked on after we ordered. And I had to ask three times for the check. Wasn't super excited about the service. It also took quite a while to get food. I personally would be trying a different restaurant the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
3 months ago I gave them a 5 star review. Today, I was shocked. The food was average at best. The service was horrible. We saw friends and were visiting with them and their autistic grand daughter. The child had reached her limit of our visiting. Bus staff gave one of the grandmas a stack of napkins to clean up a spill on the table that had gone on the floor, and told her to clean it up. I have NEVER heard or seen staff instruct a customer to clean up a mess. EVER. When we said something, we were met with "they didn't communicate their situation," as if that would have changed the staffs actions and subsequent attitude. Girls, it's never the customer's fault. You have a job to do and that is to accommodate your customers, not turn them into busing staff. You just lost us as steady customers. And one more thing. The place reeked of sewer smell. The excuse that the cold air and the door opening, pulling the smell from the restrooms through that part of the restaurant, well, that just means there's a ventilation issue. No one wants to eat lunch with the smell of human waste wafting about. Fix it.

Yelp
Service was over the top and the food was great! Recommend the Green Chili Cheese Burger!

Yelp
I am SO sorry to leave this review, but things have GOT to change. Ever since the business was sold, the quality has gone down, down down. I have eaten there 5 -6 times and each time, I left rather disappointed from feeling ignored to the quality of the food not being as good as before. Today was the final straw. Everything about my to-go order was wrong. In the past, I gave this establishment a 5 star review. I just hope the new owner isn't in over her head and can improve the service and the quality of the food. Thanks.

Yelp
If you're looking for fresh ground angus patties cooked to temp then this is the place for you. The green chili mayo was amazing and all of the food was delicious!

Shelli G.

Yelp
We were visiting the area with our pups and found this place online as a dog friendly restaurant. They welcome dogs on their patio so we decided to give it a try. The green chili burger was the bomb and the French fries were delicious. Also, craft beer! Yes, please! This place was a 10. Good food, good service and a pet friendly patio. They even brought a clean bowl of ice water for our pups. Great place!

Yelp
Green chile burger was good. Fries were fried, that sort of thing. With a beer, it's a smooth experience. My review is four stars for 5 Star Burgers.

Yelp
Best burger in Taos !!! 5 stars is right. I didn't take a before picture but I got an after pic. I totally savored every bite and my mouth is watering while I'm writing this review. The green chilis makes this burger part of a solid New Mexico family. Thank you for a great burger experience!!!! We will be back !

chris

Yelp
The exact burger i needed for dinner. Ambiance was the perfect local burger joint. The red sangria was perfect for the lady.
google avatar

Debi S.

Yelp
5 star?? Nope, 10 STARS! Went to Taos today and wanted to try this place after we went to the Taos Pueblo and the Plaza (gift shops on steroids). 5 Star is a fantastic burger place with super nice folks and service. The menu is so yummy with something for everyone. I had the burger bowl which was a very large patty on lettuce, grilled onions, mushrooms and other goodies. Hubby had the Old Timer (appropriate, I know ) and said it was wonderful. We also split a "small" order of mixed fries - sweet potato and regular. There were enough fries to feed at least 4 people. They serve this amazing maple cream with the sweet potato fries too. I have only 1 tiny request of the servers-when you are asked if you have Diet Coke please be sure to tell the customer that it's Pepsi and not Coke. Anyway, loved this place. If you get to Taos, check them out!
google avatar

Amy E.

Yelp
5 Star Burger is an appropriate name! It was great!! I had the Green Chile Cheeseburgerand my husband had a Burger Steak with grilled veggies. The wine was good and reasonably priced, too. They seated us right away--even though they were busy. Our waitress was great and very attentive. We literally thought this was the best customer service that we received in Taos. (Just when we were disappointed in the lack of service and quality of the food at other places--we found 5 Star Burgers)!!! If you are visiting Taos--go to 5 Star Burgers!!

Judy C.

Yelp
Burgers were tasty! I am gluten free and the bun was good. You can choose how you want your burger and even get a mixture of fries. We like regular and sweet potato. Friendly staff We will go back again
google avatar

Madalyn U.

Yelp
5 Star Burgers? More Like 1.5 Star Burgers! I went and expected brilliance! I also expected quinoa. Which NO ONE KNEW ABOUT! It's like RICE! Similar to f#*%\$ LENTILS! Widely cultivated for its edible starchy seeds before introduction of OLD WORLD GRAINS!!!!!!!(as said by Google.)!!!!!!! We ordered a few burgers and this man decided that everyone needed tomatoes, okay tomato guy, and took a millennia to read back our TEENY tiny WEENY WINY little order! SPEED IT UP BUSTER!!! I WANT MY BURGER!!! But other than that, nice ambiance. Might come again.

M. J. A.

Yelp
This couldn't be easier! The name of the place is the same as the rating: FIVE STARS! And that's an enthusiastic five stars! The burger was just what you'd expect with such a name. Big, juicy, prepared with care, and oh so delicious. The onion rings were wonderfully tasty too! Nicely breaded, fried to perfections, and delivered to the table piping hot. My girlfriend opted for the turkey burger, and claims it's the best turkey burger she's ever had! It was generously sized, super moist and flavorful. The service was also top-notch, and the casual, upscale burger-joint atmosphere was perfect for a relaxed evening out. Definitely Five Stars all around.
google avatar

Scott O.

Yelp
We got the Mediterranean bowl and the green chili cheeseburger. $25. The green chili cheeseburger did not have any flavor. We tore this burger apart trying to find some. But, if not for the sauces provided on the side this burger would have been all but tasteless. We have been having a lot of luck lately out West with green chili cheeseburgers. But, not here. The Mediterranean bowl was a little better. But, it tasted a bit off. Better to try to find a lamb kabob somewhere than to hope for a similar experience with the 5 Star offering. Or service was pretty good. Maybe it was an off night on the grill?
google avatar

Rodney V.

Yelp
Excellent food, hamburger and onion rings. Got it Take Out. They roll up the streets here in Taos!
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Yummy green chili mayo for dipping your fries & chicken strips. Excellent service!!! We'll definitely return on our next trip to Taos.
google avatar

Aprille S.

Yelp
We are in town for a dog show and were looking for a dog friendly place we could take our two pups with us. From the moment we walked in, the staff were just so friendly and nice. The fur kids enjoyed some nice bacon and bowls of water with ice, the puppy thought that was the best thing ever! The food was delicious and we enjoyed very much. Their outdoor patio is lovely. Great spot to sit out and enjoy. It seemed very popular with the locals, which is always a good sign in my book!
google avatar

Lynda H.

Yelp
Great burger! I had the 5 Star burger with blue cheese and bacon. Also, there was a wonderful sauce for the burger. It was yummy! The service was good, as well.
google avatar

Joy Q.

Yelp
Good spot with fresh ingredients and good portion Thumb up for the Value for the price Highly recommend the fried green chili
google avatar

Susan K.

Yelp
This is not a typical burger spot. They have lots of delicious choices that are far beyond the traditional burger. The Reuben sandwich is delicious and so is the burger salad. The service is efficient and friendly. The place is clean and attractive.
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
Best hamburger ever!!!! That's it!!!!! A review has to be at least 85 characters and that usually isn't an issue for me! Great service! Clean restaurant! Great service!! And the best hamburger ever!!!
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
I had the balsamic burger salad bowl, it was fantastic, we tried several other burgers, and they were all very good too. Service was very friendly and helpful if you're looking for a hamburger, my family would definitely recommend eating at this place, great quality they use hundred percent black Angus beef, burgers are made freshly

Kay C.

Yelp
Always love stopping to eat at 5 Star Burgers when we visit Taos!! Food is always delicious, love the caring staff and relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommend!!

Cheryl R.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite burger places in Taos however since apparently it has been sold to another owner there are a lot of things not good about #1 the service is awful now you have to wait forever to get your food. #2 the wait staff literally steals from you if you happen to use a credit card this has happened more than once but just last week it happened again. My husband put a 20% tip on the table (7.00) and the wait staff added a 7.00 tip to the bill. There were only 2 of us so gratuity being added should not have been done. This will not happen again as we will never return to 5 Star Burgers. I have lived close to the Taos area for over 10 years and have been frequenting this business for all of those years but not anymore.

LouNel E.

Yelp
We had the best food and fantastic survive. We just ordered burgers and they were juicy, thick, hot and fresh. They have a house made spicy green chili Mayo that is very yummy. We will be back the next time we are in town.

Natalie R.

Yelp
Please update your business hours! They actually close at 8pm on Friday nights. We showed up at 8:15pm and they had the doors locked and told us they lock the doors at 8 to start shutting down the restaurant. Very unfortunate because I love the 5 star in ABQ and was super excited for my friends to try it!
google avatar

Richard B.

Yelp
Winner winner burger dinner. Heavy weight champion of the Burger Wars. 5 Star Burger and Onion rings, feather lite, is all you need to know.
google avatar

Kirstin B.

Yelp
The Taos location is on the struggle bus right now. I get it, busy Friday night and only 1 server for the whole place- difficult for anyone. The one server did a bang up job considering. The rest of the staff....what do you do? The "hostesses" (plural. Two girls), ignored my group for more than 5+ minutes, decided to seat us outside (outside was requested but then rain) in the rain instead of under the coverings. We asked to move inside, stood by the front check in/hostess stand for another 5 minutes before the only server came over and sat us. The two hostess girls were wandering around. Literally not even helping the server. It was frustrating. The food itself was delicious as usual (I normally go to the Abq location). I think if management trains the hostesses to help their server and not ignore guests, this place will be fine.
google avatar

Ben F.

Yelp
We enjoyed our five star burgers. We had the green chili cheeseburger and the old timer. Very good beef flavor and the green chili burger had a wonderful heat and chili flavor. The onion rings, and french fries were not too greasy and very tasty. We went through the drive-through, and although we were told it would be about 15 minutes, had our burgers in about five, very fast service. The price was fair. The service was fast, the food was good. can't ask for much more from a burger place.
google avatar

Tikila M.

Yelp
Great food and service. Servers were very friendly and accommodating. Everyone in my party enjoyed their food. My only issue was that they initially tried to sit us at the table all the way in the back RIGHT outside of the restrooms. Ew and NO. Nobody wants to see (or smell) anything out of there while eating. We spoke up and got a better table. Everything else was good.
google avatar

Seann P.

Yelp
Green Chile Burger was mediocre at best... Just sloppy and I promise when I say the fries come so small I counted 12 fries... But took over 30 minutes to get our check!!! Go to Burger King.

Franco J.

Yelp
Great service and staff I got a bison burger cooked just how I eased it and everything was amazing environment
google avatar

Russell L.

Yelp
BEST BURGER EVER!!! Traveling through Taos and stopped in due to convenience!!! It is a MUST STOP!! Charlotte was so friendly, kind, and efficient. Would give 6 stars if I could!!

Joella K.

Yelp
Food was incredibly delicious. They have gluten free buns. Our server, Dina, was great. Cute place, awesome location (we're staying at Don Fernando), walked there in under 10 minutes. Considering going back tomorrow night so husband and I can try 2 different specialty burgers. My six year old says "give it 100 stars!!"
google avatar

Zoe K.

Yelp
***BEER AND WINE ONLY*** Really good service! Fancy burgers and interesting selection of sauces. Come hungry because the burgers are huge. All sides sold separately. We always come after a particularly hard working day!! Bon Appétit

Richard T.

Yelp
Friendly and good service. However, the burgers were tasteless (a little salt and pepper would go a long way)No flavor in the beef. Green chilis were not flavorful.
google avatar

Dia M.

Yelp
On our recent trip to New Mexico we did a day trip to Taos and stopped in here on our way back to Santa Fe and we were so glad we did! First off not too many restaurants were open being that it was Easter Sunday. Second we did not bother looking at the ratings/reviews and just walked in. By the looks of the parking lot the place seemed to be super busy. Upon entering the restaurant it was quite busy. We waited to be seated and our server gave us a heads up that they were short staffed and for us to be patient. We really appreciated his honesty and for sharing that with us. But I have to say that the two servers handled the crowd with courtesy, calmness, and efficiency. They were never frazzled and served with a smile! We ordered the Asian Chicken Salad, Green Chile Cheeseburger and an order of fries. The burger was incredible, cooked perfectly and was very flavorful. It came with a side of green chile mayo which added an additional kick to the burger. With the green chile and pepper jack cheese, the spice level was just the right amount and not overpowering. The salad was fresh with a variety of greens and a good amount of grilled chicken. It was very filling! We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and topped it off with an ice cream cone which they were offering for just $1.00. The ice cream was delicious too! It doesn't surprise me that this casual burger joint has earned many accolades! If ever in Taos do stop in. You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Janice S.

Yelp
The food was one star but we had to give an extra star strictly for the service, as everyone there was truly busting their butts to get everyone served. We're baffled by the five star reviews...these were literally the worst burgers, fries and onion rings we've had in years. Soggy, greasy flavorless messes on super dry buns with odd, chewy texture onion rings that we had to choke down after a day of skiing. If you're from outside of New Mexico and are craving a delicious burger, you're going to want to head elsewhere. We were so disappointed.
google avatar

Jeanie M.

Yelp
For a casual yummy meal, this place is great. The restaurant was clean. There was plenty of seating. Staff were courteous. Food was delicious. Parking was steps away from the restaurant. Prices were reasonable. Hubby and I had burgers. Mine was keto-ized--no bun. They asked how I wanted the burger so I asked for medium rare. It came out medium, no rare in sight, but it was delicious, so no big deal. Hubby enjoyed his burger, as well. We would go back!

Karine K.

Yelp
Loved everything about this place, great service, the food was perfect ! The meat was so tasty. Only regret is not knowing about this place as we visit Taos on a regular basis.
