Best Pizza Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona, 2021 - Eater Phoenix

"At his comfortable Italian restaurant in downtown Glendale, Justin Piazza makes three kinds of pizza: Neapolitan-style, Roman-style and New York-style. It’s a lot to pull off. His 12-inch Neapolitan pies take up the most real estate on the menu (13 pies in all, including many classics such as the margherita), and Piazza prepares them according to AVPN regs, using OO flour, San Marzano tomatoes, and a blazing wood-fired oven. His square Roman-style pies, light and airy thanks to high hydration (think 80 percent water), have become just as popular. Consider the amatriciana, a riff on the pasta dish of the same name, topped with bacon, onion, tomato, black pepper and pecorino. Roman-style pies are available until the kitchen runs out of dough, so plan accordingly. If only New York pizza will do, call ahead to make sure it’s available." - Nikki Buchanan, Chris Malloy

Yelp
From the fun "Pizza fit for a Queen" artwork on the way in, to the authentic Neapolitan domed oven and fun pics to look at (Guy Ramsey Fieri for one), you know you're going to be in for a unique experience. The server knew every detail for every pizza we were considering and was a pleasure to talk with--what fun that she was there when Guy Fieri visited and how he enjoyed sampling each dish as it left the kitchen. What a pizza! Perfect char and texture, and with a flavor of quality and freshness. You just can't get a pizza like this unless it's in one of the few certified VPN establishments proving they know the true Naples techniques. Dessert was a cannoli filled on the spot so no soggy tubes here, and this again in the real deal, not some pudding-like or gloppy slop trying to pass. Heard they will be closing after 18 years due to the rent increases which doom so many family businesses-- what a horror to this staple in the community. Visit before July 2025 and convince them to reopen somewhere. Please!

Yelp
It's been years since I'd been here! I moved further away but I'm so glad I was able to go back today! I love love the crust! This makes pizza for me! The staff was awesome. Juliana was our waitress and she did an amazing job checking in on us and helping me decide which pizza to choose today. I had the Guido, which was meatball, onion, ricotta and prosciutto! My daughter got the margherita! We both loved our choices. I noticed other pizzas coming out and everything looked so good! I'm gonna make sure to come back again soon and recommend to colleagues! Make sure to bring cash as you get a discount!

Yelp
Solid pizza spot in Glendale. My friends and I were starving and popped in to get some dinner. We came in around 4pm on a Saturday and didn't have to wait. Italian style decor, darker lighting. We each ordered the 12in "personal size" pizza, cut into 4 slices. It was a lot, even with how hungry I was, I still had a piece left over. I ordered the Bianca and it was delicious! My friends also ordered the Napoletana and Margherita pizzas and no one had any complaints. I would definitely come back here.

Yelp
I have eaten here several times. Each time, the pizza was absolutely delicious and the staff was always friendly. I'm sad to see it close

Yelp
We have seen this place a few times and I'm really glad we tried it! Nothing was a disappointment, the pizza was delish, our apps and dessert were great. The service was wonderful, and it's this cute little place. I do not usually like a Neapolitan pizza, I'm usually a New York slice kinda gal, but this pizza... I couldn't put it down. Crust was perfect, fresh ingredients, every bite was perfect. Not shown here was the ravioli fritti, amazing. Also not pictured is the Salvatore Pizza, and you guessed it, delish. The Zeppolis were perfect to share with our table of 4 and were so good!! Little puffs of heaven. There isn't much else to say, other than letting the food talk for itself! Try them out! Cute for a date night, friends in town, or just when you want some good pizza!

Yelp
We sidled on in after exploring the many comic books and collectors stores downtown Glendale. We walked in and we're greeted by smiling face and a hostess that was dancing to some good music. Immediately we were sat, given our water and given a rundown on some recommendations. We took the waitress up on her recommendations and the food came out freshly prepared and smelling delicious. The pizza is to die for. The crust is made fresh, and everyone ate all of their pizza. The Bianca was a pleasant surprise with its feta cheese and my nephew who does not like feta cheese, normally devoured the whole thing. I had the house salad with prosciutto and I'm already planning my next visit to go back and get more and dance with the dancing waitress.

Yelp
Went to work in the dark this morning and walked out to a full moon. That means full pie to me. Last night in Glendale, AZ and I needed a bite so called in a pick up order. Ordered the Italian Stallion and it didn't disappoint. Might else well be watching the Rocky movie while eating this, it hit the spot. Thin crust firewood pizza had great taste! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the crust was slightly burned. Or as my wife would call it "toasty." Can't wait to try another pizza the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
This was a ummmm interesting experience We were doing some shopping and just checking out the downtown scene. We got hungry and looked up some reviews for restaurants in the area and this one seemed promising It was around 12:30 so there were not a lot of people inside. Out of all the tables to seat us at she sat us as the only dirty table in the establishment. Odd We ordered the Ravioli which appeared to annoy her as that was the only thing we were ordering. I don't know about you but when it's my first time at a place I like to try a dish and if I like it I order more. There must have been some of their usuals there and honestly those were the only people she spoke to. There was another gentleman there and she didn't really check on him either. We felt rushed and when she brought the check said we could pay at the front. We waited for her at the front for 10 minutes I'm giving this place 3 stars because the food was yummy Service needs work

Yelp
What used to be my favorite pizza spot was honestly a let down upon this most recent visit. I am sad to hear they are discontinuing pasta because the quatro formaggio pasta was a standout dish. I also hated the ripped, dirty paper menus we were given (and why were the layouts different for the menus?). The service was also not too great, I was feeling very rushed. The Italian Stallion pizza was great as always, just not sure if it's worth returning here for just pizza anymore as you get 4 slices per pizza for a big price.

Yelp
Unfortunately just recently closed down. Nowhere in Dowtown Glendale will you get brick oven pizza that they produced. Arivederci.

Yelp
I got the Romano pizza and although the sauce was delicious.... I wasn't impressed with the thick French bread like crust. The service was wonderful, very friendly and fast especially considering that the reason why we even went was because of Glendale Glitters. The ambiance was relaxing nice chill spot. Because of this, I am willing to give it another shot and try something else on the menu.

Yelp
If I could give no stars, I would. I placed a delivery order through slice at 7:05 PM - the expected delivery time was between 7:50-8:10. Immediately, I got a notification through the app that the restaurant was busy and my delivery time was adjusted to 8:21 PM. Ok-no big deal it was just a 10 minute difference. Well, we just got our food, and it's 9:11 pm....everything is cold and steamed up in the boxes like it had been sitting around. I had to not only heat my order up in the oven, but then I had to deal with Slice's customer service to get a partial refund. This isn't the first time this restaurant hadn't been able to handle volume. Their food is great and I prefer to order local but will never do so from here again. Do yourself favor and avoid this place. I should have ordered Grimaldi's.

Yelp
Would not recommend. The server got upset when we needed more forks and after waiting 15 minutes we got up and for them ourselves. She didn't like we took the ones rolled in a napkin but rather waited to get forks in a plastic bin. Her demeanor and service changed over that. The food is not worth the price. Bruschetta was sliced bread with a cup of chopped tomatoes on the side. Pasta is not fresh and no option for fresh cheese on top. The gladiator pizza ($36) was all bread hardly any toppings. The place looks run down. Tears in the booths. Beautiful Friday night and they didn't have the patio seating area open. Go elsewhere-not worth it

Yelp
Pee in the mood for authentic pizza this is your jam. The wait staff was awesome and the pizza chef was top-notch. Probably the best pizza outside of New Jersey that I've had in a long time. I normally don't give five star reviews, but this place definitely deserved it.

Been going to this place for years, never disappoints. I heard they are closing, sorry to see it go.

Yelp
SO DISAPPOINTED!! My third visit here and I decided to have to Quattro Formaggio again. I had it last week and every bite had endless strings of cheese you had to roll up on your fork. The ricotta was delicious and really stood out. Tonight I thought they served me a microwave dinner, or maybe I got the bottom of the pan! It was watery. It still had a cheesy flavor, but no strings of cheese. If there was any ricotta it was imperceptible. there were tiny clump of cheese that kind of floated in the soup of oil, or grease... Last week I had cheesy strings hanging from my fork. Tonight I had dripping grease. I should have taken a photo, but the place was full of people and I kind of feel silly taking pictures of my food and people looking at me. After seeing the movie Waiting with Ryan Reynolds, and several YouTube videos that are truly disturbing I will NEVER complain about my food and send it back. I hope and pray that kind of stuff doesn't happen often, but it bothers me enough that I never complain, though I really wanted to tonight. This, as I said, was my third visit in as many weeks. First two visits were stellar. Also the place was almost empty. For some reason tonight it was packed. I had to wait ten minutes for a seat. That's not a complaint. From my first two experiences here I was happy to wait. I just wonder why it was so busy on a random Thursday night. It must have been a sports event. Got my drink and food quick, but then the waitress never checked back on me. I think there was only one young lady working every table. So I don't hold that against her. For being so busy she was in good spirits with a smile on her face. I commend her, and I didn't really require her attention anyway. So, I don't know what to say. I have to take away three stars for a truly disappointing dish. I plan on coming back, but if I have one more bad experience then it will be the last. If you read my reviews at other places I'm easily impressed and hand out five-star reviews all the time. It kills me to leave two stars tonight.

Yelp
Friendly service and fresh flavorful ingredients Calamari - crispy and flavorful batter and calamari, for 12.50, it's well worth getting I liked the white sauce and mushrooms on the pizza Pro tip: bring cash, u get a 10% discount :)

Yelp
This is my favorite pizza spot in all of greater metropolitan PHX. I had the Bianca with my lady tonight and we both nearly shed tears. It was a spiritual experience. These folks know how to make a pie. The perfect crust and balance of flavors. Just come, eat the pizza, and be joyful. Also, our servers were kind and helpful to boot. What else could you want? Nothing of importance.

Carmen B.

Yelp
The pizza was great. Some of the most authentic pizza we have had since moving from Italy. The service was trash. After our party of 4 was charged gratuity, which is no issue, the waitress had the audacity to ask, "Where is her tip?". I had out of town guests who were shocked at her tackiness. I'm so embarrassed I'm sure I'll never be back

Yelp
The food list was limited and the taste not great. It was an experience that was not expected. The outside tables and stools dirty. I cleaned the table and stools with clorox wipes. There was no attempt by staff to wipe the seating area. We would have eaten and sat in germs. The service was okay nothing to give praise. I noticed all the brunt spots on the pizza. The bill was paid but the tip was going to be paid in cash. As we were leaving and standing at the register to give the server a tip. She rudely said out loud for everyone to hear in the small restaurant. Was the food good you did not leave any tip. With an attitude demanding a tip due to the shock of her rudeness. This is not a good place to eat and we will never go back. I posted a review about this restaurant the same day this happened. It look like it was removed or deleted by Yelp. The server needs to wait for her tip and not call out patrons. This was a shock that staff actually demands tips. I will never ever recommend this eating establishment.

Yelp
Absolutely the best! We have been going there before they were on Diners, Drive ins and Dives. The Italian ravioli are a must! So is the caprese appetizer. We always get the Italian Stallion... it will clear out your sinuses. Staff is absolutely great and it's all family. Their cannoli's are delicious it used to be drizzled with chocolate sauce and it made it even better Margarita pizza is great for kids. Before the father retired the had baked spaghetti that was excellent. Expect a wait during Glendale glitters. The used to serve soda's from Mexico and just added another great touch. We have been to the locations that were downtown phoenix and Avondale, they have since closed, Glendale location was/is the BEST!

Yelp
Meatball app was delicious! 3 pizzas fed our family of 4. Hot chili & gladiator pizzas were great.

Yelp
My first time trying napoletana style pizza and this place blew my mind. Best pizza Iv ever had! I'll never eat normal pizza again. The service was amazing and the guy whipping up the pizzas by the wood fired pizza oven was so cool and talented! I'll be back as soon as possible! I got the Italian stallion and fungi pizzas and my beautiful lady had the Margherita. FUGGET ABOUT IT!!!

Yelp
I haven't been to this place in YEARS but i remember it being a great date night place with really great food.. years later i guess that's not really the case anymore. Went here for a date night with my fiancée last week and the ambiance was just not there. They were playing loud music from a speaker and it was hard to talk to one another, the decorations are mid and it feels like the kitchen had poor centralization because the smell of smoke kept coming into the dining room. overall it feels like a VERY casual place. The food was also mid and the portion sizes have changed drastically and not for the better. prices have gone up and portions have gone down. i wish i could say i would return but its not what it used to be. 3 starts for the servers trying their best.

Yelp
Amazing pizza. Great atmosphere and vibe in this spot. The entire staff is very friendly and attentive. Can not go wrong here.

Yelp
First time in- excellent! Julianna (our server) was very pleasant, lots of good drink choices, and the food was amazing!! Highly recommend!

Yelp
My wife and I went to La Piazza a week ago. We are Chicago transplants here in Glendale less than a year, and the pizza, service, and ambience were outstanding. The pizzas we ordered were cooked to perfection. The crust was thin and crunchy and toppings were fresh. We have tried several other places, and this by far is the best thin crust pizza that we've had here in Arizona. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
This is a really cool Italian food in downtown Glendale. I didn't expect it to be this GOOD!!! I highly recommend making a reservation on time, even for two people, the wait can be long, but it's worth it. I order Chicken Pesto Cannelloni, Funghi and Tomatoe E Mozzarella Panino. It tasted so freshed and delicious. To get your food it can take some time, but the wait is worth it. To get Parking you can find in the back of the building or by the park but it is really nice to walk around the area.

V. W.

Yelp
Best wood fire pizza. Weird hours, lunch dinner break. Rather sterile inside, not comfortable seating but you come for the food.
google avatar

Andrea H.

Yelp
Passing by looking for coffee and decided pizza is much more satisfying. With many offerings, we decided on the Salvatore - tomatoes, house made mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula and parm. I have to say, it looked better than it tasty. Crust was soggy and bready and was kindve tasteless.Didn't warrant the server's enthusiasm.

Yelp
My fiend loves this place and it is very close to my house. I gave it a try and I love it, too. I'm not normally into Italian food but I really enjoy the food here.

Yelp
I may be a little in love with this place ! Nestled in the charming main strip in DT Glendale is this delicious resturaunt! Walking in to my right is a small open patio that would have me believe a live band would play or perhaps a few tables for outdoor intimate dining . The inside is not massive however it's warm , welcoming , fragrant and there was this feel good rumble in my belly that had me excited to try out this place . It is clean , organized and decorated with portraits that tell its stories . We were greeted within moments by Robert , great energy , smile and as we soon would learn amazing customer service! ( I believe he was the only service in the floor ) From our table view we could see the pizza brick oven being loaded with pizza .. pizza and just pizzas !! Nice touch for ambiance ! Ones seated , you can scan the QR code and it is specific to your table , once the app opens you put your name and phone number in and you can view the menu , order , add to your order and once done pay for your order ! I love this feature ! However , our fella Robert was prompt to take our beverage order , followed by our food order. The pizzas all sounded so amazing , to the point I was undecided. After a brief chat and his detailed descriptions , it was settled , we ordered the Italian Stallion ( meat lovers dream pie) We also order the clam linguini , which took me down a bit of a fond memory of old home cooked deliciousness ! I would have loved some bread to dip into the sauce, I compromised and dip ky pizza crust into it ! So good !!! Now that pizza .. it was loaded! I won't lie .. I used a fork to assist ! So freaking good ! The sauce was mild nothing overbearing to steal away from the other flavors . The crust , was perfection! I wanted to order a big piece of just crust ! Crunchy , airy with that distinctive brick oven flavor. It is too yummy , that I'm Salivating at the idea of my leftover pizza that I'm too full to finish , will be my breakfast of champions ! Folks I polished off a glass of Cabernet , ordered a slice of cheesecake to go , used the app to pay my tab, thanked our server and left with a very satisfied experience ! There will be another date night here for sure !

Nicole P.

Yelp
This pizza is unbelievable. Absolutely as good as Pizzeria Bianco or Pomo. If you like ricotta, get the Bianca! It was sooooo delicious. This is a low key spot with amazing food. Absolutely recommend!

Yelp
Kids and hubs wanted pizza for lunch during the week and this happened to be off Grand and close by. It's located in downtown Glendale literally on Glendale Rd. It's cute and plenty of parking around the corner. We walked in and were quickly greeted by the friendly host up front. We decided to get takeout and originally wanted just a normal round pizza pie. I guess they only have round pies like that on certain days so she told us about a square pizza they have. We went with the gladiator and added mushrooms. It was pretty expensive being it was $32 and change for it. The wait was not long and we were on the way. The pizza, I was surprised when we opened it up that it was like a giant piece of focaccia bread in thickness. Was not expecting that. The toppings were of good quality but expected more of them for the price. Overall, the food was okay but not what we originally went in for and it just didn't wow us. We might stop in again if we're in the area to try their pasta or other items in the future.

Yelp
Have been wanted to come here since seeing it on DDD!! Living in Central Phoenix I guess we thought it was far? Nope... 20 minutes! Easy. Went the first night of the Glendale Glitters. Arrived on. Friday fairly early. 6 pm. We were able to score a table! Loved the menu. Server suggested the thick cut pizza . She also said it takes some extra time.. would we like to order an appetizer. Sure. Calamari it is. Oh and a bottle of house Cabernet. Everything was wonderful. I can't wait to return. Will try the traditional pizza next time. And the meatballs!! Saw them go by... I was drooling!!

Yelp
Easily the best italian food I've had in the city. Casual restaurant with some outdoor seating, fair warning it is a bit small so plan accordingly (I've attended in the early evening ~5pm on a saturday and got quick seating, got busy quickly after). I had no issues getting a table on a weeknight. Prices are reasonable and I almost always have leftovers. The four cheese pasta dish is simple but easily the best on the menu. I've had friends claim the pizza is just like the ones they've had when visiting italy, I'm a fan of the white pizza. One note: i've noticed they can run out of certain items often around dinner, so perhaps arrive a little earlier in the day.

Yelp
This has been my favorite pizza place for years now. I would go to the Glendale one every now and then, but mainly the Downtown location for lunch. Even Mateo, the waiter, knew me. Sad to say, this place has gone down quite a bit. We ordered two pizza's and both were undercooked from the bottom but had a burnt crust somehow. Immediately after lifting a slice, all the sauce, cheese, and meat fell off. Pizza's use to be cut into eight slices and now it's just four, making for huge slices where everything falls off even easier. I know the pandemic hasn't been kind to local business', and that most restaurants are understaffed. I truly hope this place goes back to its roots and continues to be the awesome place it has been before.

Yelp
TBH, so glad I stumbled across some information about this spot. Reading up on it, looking at the reviews, and checking out the menu was enough to get me curious. Being featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives coupled with being on The Phoenix New Times 2023 Top 100 Restaurants in Phoenix wasn't a bad acknowledgment either. I must say this place did not disappoint

Yelp
My buddy referred me to this place we went there and had the pizza and the fettuccine Alfredo it was excellent. They also had a great list for wine. We enjoyed it a lot.

Yelp
1st let me say that this was my favorite pizza place ever. However, we went yesterday for the 1st time in a while and had a horrible experience. 1st there was a sign on the door stating due to staffing no pastas were available. & the server was obviously having a bad day. I ordered my usual Regina Marguerita pizza which is the best pizza, and a lasagna pizza. We took our two girls, one of which was having difficulty sitting in her seat, so i took her for a walk outside while we awaited our meal. By the time we returned, my wife and older daughter had already dug in to the two incorrect pizzas that were brought tot he table. I go to Piaza Al Forno because I Love the Regina Margarita pizza; it is traditionally not round and not cut. That is not the pizza we received!, and although still a decent pie, it was not the pizza I ordered. We also recurved a pizza with 3 meats on it, NOT the lasagna pizza. When brought to the attention of the waitress, she argued that they were the right pizzas, although finally relenting that the lasagna pizza was wrong, and taking a percentage off of our bill, however still charged the higher price of the Regina. Additionally, I have not had pizza this year, as I'm on a very strict diet. This was a special treat for my birthday, yet for over $50 I did not receive what I went for. we will not be going back. I will now give the same advice I was given before we went yesterday for the last time! Go to Piazza Blanco! It is way better And actually serve you what you order!

Yelp
This was our absolute favorite place to go to for any type of Italian food before the quarantine came about. So you could understand I was pretty excited to get back here now that it was open for sit down again. We got in no wait at all sat right down, place hadn't changed! They have an awesome Wall Of Fame right when you walk on with different awards and places they support. Not to mention the Guy Fieri signed seal of approval! Pretty modest selection of different beers and cocktails, a short but sufficient wine list as well. Can't have good Italian without food wine! Being has quarantine caught up to my gym activity I opted for the Chicken Marsala with no pasta, sub broccoli. I did miss the pasta a bit, but trying to stay low carb this is a great order. Chicken is pounded thin with a great lemon caper sauce with just that touch of sour/acid on the tongue. (Pro tip ask for side of the wood fired bread to sop it all up!) The wife got a Margherita Pizza and not was delicious. The pizza is neapolitan style and done in an awesome wood burning oven. The cheese is gooey, basil was fresh, olive oil was just right. Hard to wrong with anything. They make a good Italian meats pizza as well. Don't sleep on the side of bread for all your sauces! Price can't be beat either!
google avatar

Liz W.

Yelp
Would give zero, but can't. The waitress was incredibly rude and the pizza was not at all what I anticipated based on reviews. Won't be back
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Hand tossed fired pizza at its best! I had the Italian Stallion and it was a very good pizza. Fresh, hand tossed and full of meat. The crust was so light it was almost invisible. I loved the mozzarella. One of my colleagues got the spinach salad with oil and salami. She shared a taste and I liked it as much as the pizza!
google avatar

Clayton K.

Yelp
Pizza was excellent. They try to get you to use your phone to scan some QR code to read the menu. It's a complete waste of time, You have to sign up on a website to even use it. Just give people the damn menu.
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G pizza! Stopped in for lunch. Purposely ordered too much to save for later. I'm a HUGE wood fire pizza girl - this is the spot! Ordered the Diavolo and Italian stallion. Highly recommend!

Yelp
My wife and I went to Italy a few years ago and have wanted to find pizza close to what we had in Rome. We found a place up in Flagstaff that is the closest we could get to it. Then we tried La Piazza al Forno and we are so excited that we have a place this good and this close to us. The pizza is incredible. On top of that, the women that helped us were very nice and great to talk to. We can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Incredible food! Love the pizza and pasta feels like a true authentic Italian pizzeria in the heart of Glendale. Their board is also a must

Yelp
La Piazza Al Forno My visit to La Piazza lived up to all of the hype and more. It had been hyped up on the @foodnetwork by @guyfieri and tons of local pizza lovers told me- ya gotta go, ya gotta go! Family owned and operated and a whipping out true, VPN style pizzas! The owner, Justin is one of the most passionate owners I've met in the business. He cares so much about the quality and consistency of his pizzas that he's involved in every single phase of the pizza making and when you go in, he'll be the one you see cooking your pie! Alright, now on to the score. Best Neapolitan Pizza in the state HANDS DOWN! Score it: 8.6 for #2 all time in the state of AZ out of 140! Recommendation: Messicano- pep, jalapeño, hot honey!
