"In retrospect, it's no surprise that street food is such a big part of Portland's epicurean culture—food carts offer tons of diversity and an opportunity to support small, local businesses, plus their small size means owners can be highly specialized. Rather than roaming around like they do in other big cities, Portland's food carts park together in groups, called “pods,” which is great because a) you can sample tons of different foods at one time, and b) they're easy to find. There are pods located throughout the city, but the classic version is the Alder Street pod, right in the center of Downtown—it takes up an entire city block."

Stopped by here around 11a on a Saturday morning. Most food trucks were open, but 5 of the about 15 food trucks were closed. There was a good variety of food trucks representing many different cuisines and ethnicities. There was plenty of seating with some tables having umbrellas for shade. The is a stage, but wasn't being used when I visited. Ended up ordering a few gyros, but the other food trucks seemed to have some good options too.

The food cart square has some of the most flavorful and reasonably priced foods. You've gotta stop by a few times. You're guaranteed to be too full to try more than one or two places at a time. Don't bother paying for too much parking time or sticking around to eat. There's very limited seating. Some carts have their own seating or areas where you can stand and eat. We tried the Korean cart. It was A M A Z I N G.

The very first truck on the corner, the Egyptian Mediterranean truck was by far the best. The cook was incredibly nice and it was by far the best lamb I've ever had. For two people it was barely over $20 to literally stuff our faces and we could barely finish our food because there was so much, but we didn't want to stop because it was so good.

Tito’s Burritos is where me and coworkers on a layover stopped to grab some, and the little spot didn’t disappoint. Authentic Mexican food, I ordered chili rellenos, and they were great Staff is very personable as well. I’d definitely try them again if I came back to the PDX area.

So many options but only so much stomach room.. they have taco stands, Iraqi, Thai, halal, gyros, Hawaiin, and much more for reasonable prices. A great place for lunch. I had Mr. Taco.. $6.50 for 3 tacos and a soda. Fantastic. Now the area can get sketchy at times..but that seems to be downtown Portland.

Ordered the triple meat plate. It fed 2 for $20. It was so delicious and hot. It came with the 3 meats, hummus, tzatziki rice pilaf and pita bread. The night life was something here but it is a grab your food and go kind of area.

Tito's Burritos has some of the most authentic Mexican food! I've been told that anyway.. they have cactus burritos and other great dishes with even better prices. I stick to the carne asada burrito myself and the burrito is huge and very filling!

We got after 5 on a Saturday so more than half of the stalls were closed already. The gyro was good but the chicken shawarma was a bit dry.
