Where to Drink Margs and Give Back in Detroit | Eater

"Whether you’re looking for a sprawling buffet for a leisurely weekend brunch or late-night happy hour, 5th Tavern has got you and your whole squad covered. The vast menu offers classic crowd pleasers including burgers, sandwiches, or salads, as well as sumptuous entrees like braised lamb shank and sesame ahi tuna. Or try prime steaks and seafood that come to your table sizzling on a stone. Each day offers something for everyone, including Cantina Tuesday when you can score free chips and salsa with the purchase of a specialty Mexican entrée. Tuesday is an especially good day to enjoy the mango habanero margarita, with Astral Blanco, habanero lime syrup, mango puree, fresh lime, and chamoy rim. At $24, the brunch buffet — a spread with an omelet bar, crepe station, and prime rib — is among the best deals in town." - Vox Creative

We met some friends to watch the band that someone was a big fan of. We came from Linden so it was about a 40 min. drive. The service, food and live band was all fantastic! I had the sord fish with mango salsa and it was honestly one of the best meals I have had in the area! My husband had ribeye steak and was very happy with it as well and a friend had the BBQ chicken salad and it looked amazing! We will be back!

We go there often for brunch on Saturday’s or Sunday’s. Mostly Sunday’s. They have Brunch from 10-3. An extremely large buffet style and everything is fresh and delicious. Never had a bad brunch yet. Kids welcome. Plenty of parking. Great value. Just come hungry because there is a TON of food to choose from. Sometimes they have nice live music on patio. A full bar is also available.

Previous visits were wonderful. Great food, great service. The most recent visit was a bust. The coke was basically brown bubbly water. Our server was either new or seriously in the weeds. I received my entree before my appetizer. We waited long periods to even see our server. The food itself was off. I couldn't even eat my dinner it was so saturated in sauce, I ordered the chicken stir fry. I would not recommend it. My sister enjoyed her steak. Her husband and their children didn't enjoy their food. It was disappointing as this has been the family dinner spot when they cone in town. I don't think we will be going back.

Google
What a great place to have a get together. We were pleasantly surprised, having stopped to just grab a bite to eat and wound up staying for five hours. Band was on point and our waitress Ashley was fabulous. I can’t think of a time when my glass went dry we will definitely be back. We had an amazing service. See you soon for another visit, with the new friends from last night.

Google
This is what the Shrimp Rattlesnake Pasta looks like shortly after it arrives at your table, it's incredible! Everything we had was fantastic on our first visit, on Valentine's Day, no less. Considering how busy it was, Kenneth was on top of things as our server and the manager was on the floor checking in with tables the whole time. They made a great first impression and we'll definitely be back.

Fred Vogler

Google
We had a great meal and drinks. I had the rattlesnake pasta, which was fantastic like new favorite good. Ken was our server and he was great. We will definitely be back!

Google
Absolutely amazing food. Service was a bit lengthy but also came during rush hour. Madison did amazing and kept chatting with the table and making sure we had everything we needed. Will definitely be back again.

Google

Yelp
We bought a house in Clarkston in April and have been here about five times now. I can't think of anything we have not liked but there have been a few clear highlights: - on Cinco De Mayo, I ordered fish tacos. LOVED them! And I found out that you can order them any time even though they are not on the regular menu as they are on gluten free menu (why, I don't know, cuz it's grilled fish on a tortilla). - California burrito has been ordered by my husband' a few times now - burgers have been really good!!

Yelp
We ordered the (2) prime rib specials; we were served our soup, 30 minutes later we were informed that the prime rib was no longer available. While we understood the situation, it was frustrating to wait that long only to have to change our order. We then decided to share a 14-ounce Delmonico steak and requested that it be cut in half since we preferred different levels of doneness. The kitchen accommodated this request, but when the steaks arrived, it was clear they were not from the same cut. This was not a major issue; however, both steaks were so tough they were nearly inedible, we both ate less than half of what was served to us before we gave up. When we brought this to the attention of the manager, she was dismissive/abrupt and told us we would not be charged for the meal. While that might have seemed like a fair resolution, when we received our tab, we saw that they decided to charge us à la cart baked potato, broccoli, and soup, making our final bill only $4 less than the original meal price.... More than willing to pay for the extra soup that we ordered, by the way, when we originally ordered soups, it was to be included the two complete meals of prime rib that we originally ordered. Additionally, the quality of the sides was unacceptable. The baked potato was so overcooked it was nearly inedible, and the broccoli was so undercooked that it was difficult to cut. My tomato basil soup would've been better as a spaghetti sauce. Flavor was fine, but it was so thick. It was more like a sauce. Throughout our interaction, the manager was rude, unprofessional, and overwhelmed us with complaints about her kitchen issues instead of addressing our concerns. I told her several times to just go away and give me the bill I would pay for the entire thing.... She turned her back on me and continued to complain to my girlfriend about her problems. I'm a Clarkson local. I've gone to this restaurant through three different name changes. Never have encountered such a crazy episode. If upper management is pressuring this GM for some reason to put her in the state, maybe you should reevaluate your approach to management and the way you treat customers.

Yelp
I don't understand how this place only has a 3.5 star in Clarkston. Happy Hour, Monday and Tuesday specials are amazing. Ingredients are fresh and meat quality is great. Outside patio is cool spot.
google avatar

Andrea D.

Yelp
Great happy hour. Many options. Recommend the quesadilla, chicken satay (with generous amount of veggies & great peanut sauce) & spinach/artichoke dip. Decent house wines.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times now and both experiences have been just okay. Service is always just alright. It's a nice big place with lots of seating so that's a bonus. For my first meal I tried the crab, spinach and artichoke dip. That was a little bland and not enough seafood flavor but it was okay. The roasted asparagus and tomato bisque was a little salty and had a weird texture but not bad. My burger and fries were the highlight. The second time I went I tried a steak dish and I was underwhelmed. The meat was a bit tough and had a strange aftertaste. My potatoes were also bland. I also feel the place is overpriced for certain parts of the menu. Some dinners come with soup or salad but the steaks don't even though they're more expensive. Overall I'd call this place hit or miss depending on what you order

Yelp
We came at a super busy time during home coming. But even then the service was still good. Has a nice outdoor seating area for when the weather is nice. Omg, the pina coloda chicken, absolutely delicious. It smelled good outside of the restaurant and I'm wondering if that was what I was smelling lol. The dish must have been new because the waiter/manager asked how it was. She said it was her favorite dish too lol. I had never thought to put rice and coconut together, but I would have that again 100%

Yelp
Drinks were good and the Philly cheese steak sandwich on the lunch menu was delicious. I like this place especially in the summer when you can sit outside on the patio. They have a special Monday menu where several items are only $10. Service is normally great here; sometimes when it's busy you just need to have patience.

Yelp
Great holiday ambience, beautiful Christmas tree and fireplace lit, with Christmas music in the background. Friendly service, very attentive. We had the chili because it was cold outside and it was one of the better chilies that I've ever had at a restaurant. I had a Cuban sandwich with onion rings and my brother-in-law had the Philly steak sandwich with french fries and both were very good! My sister had a half a Cuban sandwich with the enchilada soup. Also have the five dollar margarita special for this day. Since it was taco Tuesday so they had Mexican specialties on a special menu. We love coming here often for their happy hour, which starts at 3 PM weekdays.

Yelp
Don't order Ribs terrible. Sent them back. Don't order Pina Colada Chicken took one bite Help was nice food was the worst I have ever had period. Very disappointing.

Yelp
We went on Saturday for the brunch buffet! Large amount of selections. Full breakfast bar with omelette station. Several lunch items to choose from including Salmon, chicken tenders, chicken wings, chicken medley, Mac and cheese, ribs, roast beef carving station. Pasta and vegetables, mashed potatoes. Roasted vegetables and egg rolls. Small salad bar and fruit. chips and salsa! Nice desert table! Enjoyed most everything, though the ribs were overcooked!! Service was good as was the ambiance!!

Mary Elizabeth M.

Yelp
The nachos. The happy hour. The service. Their steaks and seafood are good. I particularly like the bone in ribeye. I can't say enough good things about this place. There are two locations but the clarkston one is my preference. Lisandro has been a consistently good bartender and server. Friendly and attentive and an overall great person to handle our order and evening. Next date night, or girls night, you should definitely check this place out!! Ask for Lisandro, he's the best!!

Yelp
Food is always prepared well. Carry it window makes it very convenient. Place is always packed. Hard to get a spot at the bar sometimes.

Betty C.

Yelp
Always had good food and service here. Staff is always very friendly. Pietions are generous

Yelp
First time eating at this restaurants and it's a Friday night , the waitress is slow and everything seems to bother her and not something she wants to do. The 1/2 slab of ribs are over cooked and dried out , the sauce couldn't even help. The cedar planked salmon needs serious help, more than just throwing a handful of peppers on it. The bread , when the waitress finally brought it out was stale and hard. The dining room is noisy and dated from somewhere in the nineties, our table was warped and leaning with paper towels trying to keep it balanced and even. I should have not even bothered to go in after seeing the shoddy condition of the entry doors. All I can say is save you money and eat somewhere else , who wants to over pay for bad food, terrible service and for lack of better words a dump that hasn't been remodeled since it was Mesquite Creek 20 years ago.

Aeris W.

Yelp
The food was great but our server Annie was even better. Annie was just the sweetest little lady. Made sure I always had my drink full while having multiple other larger tables. Amazing job!!

Brian S.

Yelp
Food 5/5. My wife and I had pina colada chicken and it was great. Mixed drinks were terrible. More mix than alcohol (gin and tonic and mango habanero margarita). 0/5 on those. Old fashioned 4/5.

Yelp
We attended a dinner for about 35 people. The restaurant was packed upon arrival. We were assigned two servers. Madison and Brooke did a great job. A manager also helped with any requests. She was so nice about accommodating me. Our group had three entree options. A steak salad (an enormous salad with a generous amount of meat), Shrimp skewers: (Six large shrimp, rice, string beans) or Chicken pasta. Everyone had a house salad and yummy bread. I ordered a margherita pizza. It wasn't what I expected. I asked if I could just have the vegetables from one of the entrees and a baked potato. The manager said, "instead of making due why not get something you a tually want?" So, I had the linguini and tomato soup. The pasta was yummy. The soup was creamy and delicious. Dessert was carrott cake or cheesecake. The carrot cake was rich and yummy. My family enjoyed the cheesecake too. There is extra parking around the back of the restaurant. The patio was full, in spite of the hot weather.

Yelp
This is a pretty decent place to go. I tried their nachos, their crab and spinach dip, and satay chicken and vegetables. The nacho was really good and it never got soggy towards the bottom, which is not easy to find. It stayed crispy all the way through. Perhaps a tiny bit over baked but all in all good. The crab and spinach and artichoke dip was delicious and so was the chicken satay. The real star, however, was the amazing vegetables of the chicken satay came with. They were fantastic. The restaurant was clean. Sat in the bar and it's got a great sports bar feel to it Without being the kind of place you would think is loud and obnoxious. The server was fantastic Food and drinks came quickly and he was very very nice. And the blueberry mule is delicious.

Rita M.

Yelp
Made reservations for Friday dinner. Seated and served promptly. Great service. We tried the braised lamb shank, field berry salad, chicken cobb salad and seafood linguine. Everyone was pleased with their food. We will go again.

Yelp
Nice place just as you come into downtown Clarkston. One of the few places open in downtown Clarkston that you could get lunch or brunch during a weekday with a full bar and an extensive menu. A girlfriend and I were looking for a brunch type place to enjoy bloody Mary's and a good lunch after a night out and before heading home. Place is empty when we arrived and opted to sit in the bar for more of a social feeling instead of quiet in the corner of the dining room. Service was excellent very attentive. We ordered an assortment of appetizers and had a lovely visit. We'd definitely visit next in the area. The weekly specials are great and I wish they were better advertised.

Yelp
We frequent this spot often and are never disappointed! Orlando is our favorite bartender by far. He remembers us every time and is always so fun to talk to and so friendly and attentive. The filet is my favorite, but I also love the rattlesnake pasta and the lemon artichoke chicken. The vibe is always comfortable and welcoming. I never leave without an espresso martini for dessert and also love their other cocktail specials and wine list.

Yelp
Went for the first time to attend a group dinner for 50+. Food was served buffet style (salad, green beans, pasta and chicken and roast beef). Nothing great but all was good and enjoyable. The wait staff was a bit overloaded, but labor is a problem for most restaurants nowadays.
google avatar

Mia M.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. The server was efficient and knowledgeable. Reservation was seamless even though we showed up early. We would definitely go back. Pros: - Service - Food quality - Portion sizes - Drinks Cons: - They brought out the dish with the wrong sauce at first, but replaced it quickly. Unfortunately, that meant that my partner just had to sit and wait while I ate.

Yelp
Great service, great food, and a menu with nice variety. I highly recommend getting the Brussel sprouts as an appetizer, just don't forget to add the bacon!

Randall C.

Yelp
This restaurant offered the worst brunch for Father's Day. It was an insult to the children who wanted to celebrate their Dads and also the fathers. Here are some examples. The supposed eggs benedict were prefab with the soft boiled egg resembling a pale yellow marshmallow of the same consistency and less flavor than the marshmallow. Beneath the marshmallow was a paper thin, 50 cent piece sized something that was supposed to be meat. Not a chance. Then the 1/2 English muffin. You couldn't even cut through it with a knife. Now the cutting station. The one employee had to take care of slicing the "meat" and making omelets. He had an electric knife which wouldn't cut through the meat so he was trying to use it as a saw. I have never seen such miserable looking slabs of meat which were no where near edible. Now the scrambled eggs. They were gray. Need I say more? I could see the embarrassment on my daughter's face due to the garbage being served. How can the management of this establishment even think they're positively serving the public?
google avatar

Celeta S.

Yelp
Great location, parking is plentiful and the ambiance is great. There was a storm brewing and due to how busy they were I think they could have utilized their umbrellas and patio space more effectively. The service was great and the food was delicious I would certainly go back. This is a gem!
google avatar

Katelynn D.

Yelp
If I could give this place 6 stars I would! Tonight was our first time coming here and it was a Friday night. We had a reservation and they were packed! Our server was very nice and made sure we got our drinks and food in a timely manner. We both got the Ahi Tuna Sashimi and it was very flavorful. The only thing I wished was that we had more of the Asian slaw and less rice, but that's just my preference. The restaurant is very nice and has a ton of options on their menu. We can't wait to come back
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Stopped and got a carryout order of chicken salad club sandwich with homemade potato chips. Very clean and well staffed restaurant. This beautiful restaurant is in downtown Clarkston and has a interesting brunch menu that looks very tempting. The sprawling brunch buffet at is every Saturday 10am-2pm and Sunday 10am-3pm. Definitely will be back to try more of the menu. This is a popular restaurant that the locals like. They also offer your favorite cut of juicy steak or seafood table side on a hot volcanic rock. Nothing quite like hot ROK cooking.

Mark S.

Yelp
I do love this restaurant and enjoy the ambiance of it. The selection of food is good and I haven't really had anything there I didn't like. Last time I was there, I requested a little more lettuce in my salad because it was like 2 bites worth. A manager came over and took care of it right away. The salad I got in return was way above what I had asked for and I was totally surprised. It's nice when a restaurant knows how to take care of their patrons! We will always return. Thank you

Privamicia M.

Yelp
I ordered the grilled Kale salad and it was incredible! The salad was fresh and the ingredients were original.

Autumn M.

Yelp
Our party of 6 received fast service and enjoyed the atmosphere! The salads were delicious and everyone was pleased with their food. I would definitely go back.
google avatar

Lyanna M.

Yelp
never ever go to this restaurant!!!! waited half an hour and was blowed off!!! go to bullfrogs they have better service and food!!! never will come back again!!!

Alyce D.

Yelp
Do not GrubHub this restaurant, not worth your money or time. Fries soggy, missing soup, literally 1/4 container of coleslaw and dried out ribs for $60. We are strictly home cooking at this point.
google avatar

Lora C.

Yelp
Stopped in here for lunch during the week since we were in the area. Cute little place with nice patio seating. My husband and I both ordered drinks and the spinach & artichoke dip as an app. We got it without the crab but I bet it's delicious with it added in. The drinks were meh...I ordered a blood orange margarita and I think someone forgot to put the blood orange flavor in it because it tasted like pure tequila. On to our entrees.... I ordered the rattlesnake pasta with chicken and my husband got the zip burger. I thought the pasta was so delicious! He thought his burger was pretty standard for a bar burger. Overall our experience was good, our server was incredible and checked in on us multiple times to make sure everything was good. We would definitely visit again to try other things on the menu!

Anne S.

Yelp
Great Monday specials with burgers, salads and sandwiches for $10 with a drink purchase. Server was quick and friendly.
google avatar

Joanne R.

Yelp
Great ambiance and service. Nice food selection. The lemon artichoke chicken was flavorful and moist. The Maurice salad was pretty and a bit deconstructed. That made it eat differently than traditional Eat outside of the weather cooperates
google avatar

Anne P.

Yelp
We had been here before several times and it was great. This last time (before Xmas) the food was average and the wait long even though they were not busy. Easy access and parking. I'll go back just to give them another chance.
google avatar

Beth C.

Yelp
Had a delicious dinner here recently with great service! The lobster grilled cheese with tomato asparagus bisque was *chef's kiss*, my side of chef's vegetables were cooked and seasoned just right, and the wine options were plentiful. Looking forward to returning soon!

Deb W.

Yelp
Disappointed in service today. Appetizer, salad and entree all delivered at the same time! No apology. Food was good, just disappointed in the service.

Halaina L.

Yelp
Such good food! Mango swordfish is to die for! Will definetly be returning when back in the area

Jim K.

Yelp
Amazing Sunday brunch buffet on Father's Day. It is well worth the money. The inner decor of the restaurant is fantastic with a nice outside patio. Service is always quick and kind.

Kelsey H.

Yelp
Came in for drinks and dinner and had Riley as my server. She is so kind, brought the food out quickly, and made us laugh!! So great... would definitely recommend 5th Tavern and her!

Tom G.

Yelp
Loved the lamb shank, tomato asparagus soup and best carrot cake I've ever had. Served warm with caramel topping. Prices pretty good too. My new clarkston favorite.
google avatar

Roxanne P.

Yelp
A friend treated me here for my birthday . I had a steak salad, which was large and delicious. I had leftovers the next day for lunch. Their fresh bread was so good. Free for the table. My girlfriend had a seafood pasta. She loved it. We sat for hours talking. Great atmosphere. Good service. Bar service was slow, so get your order in ahead. They were very busy on a Wednesday night. We then got a piece of carrot cake. Ordered it warm, which was an interesting option. It was a very large portion and delicious. I had those leftovers over the next few days. I recommend this place. Large selection of menu options, good food & service & nice atmosphere. We will be back.

Linda L.

Yelp
Service was terrible. Sooooo slow bring napkins lemons and 40 minutes to get bill. Food was very good and plenty of it. Peach passion cocktail was delicious. I was in town from Texas last year and we had slow service. Anthony the Mgr. Took care of us after we talked to him, for that reason I will try them again. Thanks Anthony
google avatar

Julie P.

Yelp
I've been there a few times and have had carry out several times. The French Dip, and French onion soup are great. They have a very nice brunch. Their bread pudding is divine. Good portions. Nice restaurant, very large. Lots of outside seating. This last delivery was a disappointment. The Rattlesnake pasta had no Cajun spice and the lemon artichoke chicken had no lemon flavor or capers. I ended up cutting up a lemon I had at home to flavor it.
google avatar

Frank P.

Yelp
Very disappointed. I ordered a bone in ribeye, mid rare. The 1st couple of bites were good but after that it was terrible. Way over cooked, closer to mid well than mid rare, full of fat and gristle. By this point, the rest of our group was done eating so sending it back was not an option. Spoke with the server and the manager, was told that they would remove 50% of the price of the steak. When the check came they had credited me $7.50 on a meal that cost $38.00. Now I understand why the place was less than half full on a Friday night.

Don H.

Yelp
5/3/24 My wife and I as first timers had an early dinner here on a recent Friday. We were "walk-ins" but seated immediately and our waiter was right there with water and asking if we'd like a beverage of flavor before ordering appetizers or dinner. Friday - a cocktail for me and wine for my wife. We both ordered Great Lakes whitefish that arrived in a timely manner and was excellent in taste, doneness and portion size. Our comment - we will go back as we enjoyed our entré, the ambience of the restaurant and the attention of our waiter making sure everything was to our liking.

Yelp
Delayed review. The food and service were not as good as Telegraph location Update Okay. A twilight zone experience here. Let's begin with we have been coming to The Telegraph location for a number of years as a Blended Family celebrating our grown adult children's birthdays, our children getting engaged/married to including the addition of grandchildren plural to functions. We utilize 5th tavern as our go to family restaurant: birthdays and whatever other occasions in between a year.Over the years our family has now grown from 5 to 7 with the addition of two grandchildren.A year ago and one grandchild (Telegraph location) they put 5 adults at a high top table and expected us to put our 1 year old grandchild in double stacked high chairs in order to be near high table height. We refused due to the lack of safety in stacking high chairs and the potential for a busy one year old failing from the height.Mind you we were specific about having a low top and the need for a high chair. So, we go to the Charleston location for the next birthday. We did get a low top, however, the quality of the food was not what we were used to at the Telegraph location. So back we go to Telegraph and now we have another new addition, a 2 month old granddaughter. All in the one year. We have reservations and request 7 at a low top with two high chairs as you can put an infant carrier on a high chair. We have a 2 year old and a 2 month old now for reservations we tell them. Us grandparents arrive early to confirm at the Telegraph location that we are in fact at a low top with two high chairs. We are told yes. When our whole party arrives we are taken to a high top for 7 people. Why when there are multiple 4-8 seat low top tables open in the restaurant. So three strikes in a one year timeframe :messed up our reservation at Telegraph location, bad food in Clarkston, and the same messed up reservation yet again at the Telegraph location. On top of this as we are sitting there a mouse is crawling along the chair rail of the wall were our grandchild and his father are seated. In no great hurry to go anywhere soon either. I asked twice to speak with a manager. One ever came to our to our table and I did not want to cause an issue. I was blatantly refused my two requests. Maybe there is no manager? That would be par for the course of our experience. When staff came to catch the mouse we were told the babies come in through the door to the patio looking for their mothers. WHAT??? They just can't stop those babies from getting in...Umm,let's face it, if they have to keep catching mice them there babies are potentially being born inside and living in that restaurant! No comment was made that an effort had been made to exterminate them. They just chase them down and catch them. Over and over and over...Like it is the norm!Seriously, they catch them with napkins /ziploc baggies as you are dining.Tearing apart the booths, lifting the seats as the mice run away. Who is watching what is happening here?It used to be such a nice place to dine. Wait staff at both locations is subpar. We ordered two orders of Chips and queso and received one order of chips and a half cup of queso and a second half cup of queso....minus the chips. Our meals did not come out together. I don't get the logic of the whole situation.I get we are coming back from COVID and regrouping but I can't accept jeopardizing public health and safety. Both with the addition of mice infestation and trying to put 1 year olds at a high top in double stacked highchairs then still messing up our reservation yet a second time! I don't see coming back. I could not even enjoy the meal. All I could think of is that mice are being allowed to come in through the patio door,to run ramped inside, to deliver their babies as I can't see babies walking in looking for their mothers and how are they keeping prep tables, drawers, pans, utensils , food ... clean from droppings. And, if you want to dine at the new location 4th Tavern (Waterford location) you can't make reservations on the weekend. Only during the week. I mean really??? Okay I am DONE.Like just DONE.
