Kedai Makan Review - Capitol Hill - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Kedai Makan was once one of the on The Infatuation Seattle. The Malaysian food here was so jaw-dropping that we once equated its majesty to that of the Grand Canyon, and we even published a whole guide to bars to grab a drink nearby while waiting for your table. That wait was worth it every time. Sitting in the cramped teal space, getting teary-eyed from raw shallots wafting through the dining room was extra-special every time. Now, we’re still crying, but for a very different reason. In October 2022, Kedai Makan closed the doors of its charming original Capitol Hill space, leaving their cozy, steam-filled legacy behind. Now, they’re in a new location under new ownership. And the new guard certainly packs its larger digs (also on Capitol Hill). But a crowd is inevitable when you buy the rights to the Kedai Makan name and menu. Maintaining the majesty is not.  Sometimes relocating works just fine, say if you’re The Brady Bunch trying to make a movie in Hawaii. But in this case, it doesn’t. The new Kedai Makan falls flat. While the dining room itself is spacious, tables are crammed together. And the moment you finally sorry-whoops-pardon your way into a seat, you might have to get up again—because even though Kedai Makan is a full-service restaurant, water is awkwardly self-serve at a dispenser station. Not only that, but dishes come flying out faster than insults at a comedy roast—and sometimes the small appetizer you wanted to have first is the last plate you'll get. It’s not the most comfortable setup, but if the food were great, we wouldn’t mind. But the food isn’t great. Sure, you can expect a similar lineup of Malaysian street favorites, from vibrant chili pan mee noodles to eggy net bread with a side of curry. And while the dinnerware is identical to the Kedai Makan of yesteryear, the food on top of those plates has lost its spark. The roti jala is dry and flakes into smithereens, and that curry is chronically broken, with pools of oil separating from otherwise-tasty dhal. The chili pan mee noodles used to dazzle us, and now they’re just bland.  Even though this place is still called “Kedai Makan,” this is a totally different restaurant, and we can’t recommend a full meal here. We can, however, endorse sitting at the bar for Campari-spiked jungle bird cocktails and a few snacks, like crackly chicken wings topped with a peanutty spice paste, roti baba stuffed with pork and mushrooms, or crunchy prawn crackers dunked in sweet chili mayo. But the hits stop there.  Whether you’ve been a local fan since Kedai Makan’s start, or you’re trying it out for the first time ever, don't burst in anticipating dinner to live up to the expectations either yourself or your friends have set. All good things end, after all.  " - Aimee Rizzo

Yelp
Service is very inconsistent and quality of food is also inconsistent. I ordered the same drink twice and got it made completely different both times. Ordered the Caesar salad, which I thought was below average. Breadcrumbs and pickled onions are a bit weird on a Caesar salad. The nachos were very bland and I'm not sure what kind of cheese they used, but it had the consistency of a fake nut cheese. Also got the mahi-mahi tacos, which were may be a 6/10. My husband got the cheeseburger and said it was below average and didn't have much flavor and then he also got the poke bowl what she said was OK. Every time we ordered something from the pool deck, they delivered the food or drinks, but then never came back to check on us .

Yelp
Good food, friendly staff. A bit pricy for what you get but I guess "it's the island". Drink menu is a bit limited on beers but the bar tender can make you about anything, and with a sense of humor!

Yelp
Great food and great views! This place was at the resort my husband and I were staying at. The chicken wings were crispy and the seasoning was amazing! The hurricane fries were full of flavor. This was hands down one of our favorite meals in Hawaii.

Yelp
Beautiful scenery absolutely delicious food. Our server Russel was very nice and attentive.

Yelp
Market Catch Fish Tacos 2 blackened tuna, firm, lettuce, no sauce, not flavorful Loco Moco 4 rice bowl, burger patty, pan fried egg, grilled onions, gravy, flavorful, comforting Spicy Hawaiian Chicken Bowl 3 medium dry, sweet & spicy, pineapple, bell pepper Lava Flow Mocktail 3 pina colada, strawberry jam, too sweet

Yelp
Great if you're hanging out at the pool but okay if you're looking for something serious. I did enjoy the beef bowl a lot. Otherwise, the poke was okay.. . They have a secret menu coconut drink.

Yelp
Kyle is the best server I have had in a long time. Has gone above and beyond to meet my needs.
google avatar

Yelp
Generous portions, prompt and friendly service, amenable to all my special requests. Btw the generous portions were really generous. The seared ahi on my Caesar salad was a huge slab, and the salad itself was huge.

Yelp
We came here while waiting for our room which took longer than expected. 1 calamari, 1 virgin pina colada, and 1 lime in coconut cost $50.26. The calamari took forever to arrive and while it was good was very small for the price of $18

Yelp
This is a challenge on the star rating. The food is really quiet good, better than I would expect from a hotel pool bar. We are staying over a week onsite and it has been great to grab a bite. We had the garden burger, loco moco(awesome) wings, calamari, lava cake, and all were good. The Ceasar Salad is great! But the service - inconsistent. If you are at the bar or nearby it is good. Nice bartenders. Saturday I was surprised to be offered poolside service. Ordered a drink and food, got both. (The food runner is awesome) but then NEVER saw the server again. She never left the bar area, chatting with other server, etc. When a manager type came by she literally started running to look busy. 2 hours and 40 minutes later I went up to close out my check at the bar since she never made another round. Bartender had to find her standing behind the TV. I get pool service takes longer. I get they likely did not have enough servers (2) for the bar and pool, but if you do not have the staff, dont offer the service. Or come by to close out open checks if you are no longer offering the service.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with their Caesar salad!!! Honestly! I could eat it everyday!! Family and I sat at a table looking out into the ocean at sunset and the ambiance was absolutely perfect!!

Yelp
So, I think this is the same place as the Fire Hen, but I'm not sure. That was part of our confusion. You just kind of sit down at a table in a vaguely defined area and hope someone comes by. Eventually someone did and we were able to order food and drinks. The cheeseburger, which I dont think is on their regular menu, was amazing. One of the best I've had in a long time. My wife liked the chicken tenders she ordered as well. Its fun to sit there poolside close to the ocean. Nice vibes. I just wish it was a little clearer what you're supposed to do. The tables dont get bussed very often so it's likely you'll have to sit down at a cluttered table until someone comes by. Yeah, kinda strange but overall we had a great experience. The server was very friendly.

Yelp
This is an outside typical hotel bar. The drinks were very expensive. $30 for a cocktail and a beer. We had read there was happy hour but were quickly informed they do not have a happy hour. Super odd because it was a Tuesday at 4:00 and dead. I watched the server with the long dark hair wipe off the tables half ass and kick the chairs back into place. The tables were still filthy and the bar top super sticky. It lacked so much but could be great with a more cheerful and diligent staff.

Onnie E.

Yelp
This bar was just ok. The food was ok and the drinks were light. The view is amazing! I stay at this hotel for business and they could definitely use some different management skills.

Riggs S.

Yelp
I come to this hotel every week for work (flight crew). Often times we get in late so this is the only dinner option in the area. I usually try to call in to pick up and eat in my room, they NEVER answer their phone. And then when you go over to the bar you get completely ignored. If you manage to get anyone's attention they often treat you like you are bothering them! Terrible attitude and service, and their food is really a 4/10 to begin with. I'll be brining my own food from now on. No Aloha, so sad!

Yelp
The Mahi fish tacos were okay, The fish&chips were bad. Seems like they were sitting for a long while. The Hurricane fries and Ahi nachos were very good. The service was good. Sitting 50 yards from the beach was something we don't often get to do. So, the ambiance was great.
google avatar

Kim P.

Yelp
Great service, drinks, and food. You can't beat the beachside view. It's a little spendy but since we're staying at the hotel, it's convenient. I recommend it!
google avatar

Yelp
Jeff was the best bartender we have had on the island. Food was great so were the drinks. Atmosphere was amazing with great view of the ocean. Would absolutely recommend stopping by and if Jeff is working your experience will be great

Yelp
Eh, not too good. Especially not for the price. I don't usually mention price but my $24 burger was not the quality of burger you deserve for your 24 bucks. . . Here is the deal. It is in a hotel at the pool in front of the beach. They have a captive audience and the view is pretty. It is. There is some live music in the evening and it's the islands and I get it. Things are expensive but the quality is just not there. Crappy patty, overcooked. The fries were good and crispy and the Taro bun was very good. The beef just wasn't there for me. It wasn't just the burger either. I thought the drafts were a bit warm and the whole menu was expensive for what you get. You are paying for convenience. I have been staying at this hotel for years and I feel like the quality has been on a slow and steady decline. I haven't reviewed before because this is "just a pool bar" but I am hoping a few reviews wakes the management up. It's a sad little pool bar that probably rakes in some money on marginal food and uninspired service to a captive audience. I'm here for work. I eat here sometimes, I may even come back but this place is just a sad place. I would actually be a little depressed if I was here for a meal on vacation. This part of the island is not known for its food offerings but if I can I will probably try to go somewhere else next time I'm in town if it's not raining.

Yelp
Good hamburger, and the poke bowl was so good.. It's right on the beach. Nice swimming pool.

Yelp
Always a good time when we come here. Try coming at 5:30 to hear the live music and see the fire lighting. Prices are average for the resort on the island and it's good food also good ambiance. Servers and bartenders are always welcoming and have a great attitude. My favorite was the Hawaiian BBQ beef and the fish and chips , the mahi mahi was so good ! And if you get a pina colada get a double with the floater amazing!
google avatar

Sam p.

Yelp
They DO have happy hour again! Starts at 4pm. $6 drafts and $2 off Pupus. BUT it doesn't start until 4pm. Other place down the beach starts at 3pm. At least they are ramping up again after C.

Yelp
4 stars for service and 3 of the 4 relate to the food. SERVICE Grab your menu from the bar and self seat. Our server came out promptly and she was very nice. Even acknowledged the hawaiian name my husband decided to go by while we are on vacation lol. She went MIA towards the end but other servers took care of us and I assumed she had gone on break or lunch. FOOD Poke appetizer was void of flavoring. Perhaps it had not marinated long enough. As well it was fairly warm for poke. The wonton chips were ok. Hubby felt the fish and chips lacked in seasoning. I tasted the Mahi and it was nice. The batter was still a bit gummy underneath and the fries were Luke warm. The banana lumpia was good. A nice touch would be to add whipped cream or even a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Other than that it was fried well and I wish the center could have beem warmer but I understand not wanting to burn the outside. DRINKS Hubby had a gin and tonic and the butterfly margarita.. I had the Pineapple drink and all drinks were as expected.

Yelp
Prompt, efficient service here for lunch. We shared a huge Caesar salad and teriyaki chicken tenders. Both were very flavorful and presented well. Ocean and pool views enhance the experience.

Mal B.

Yelp
Got the Ahi Poke Nachos and multiple Mai Tai's (local). It was GREAT! Look you're paying resort prices so it's going to hit your pocket book. But they serve you drinks right to your seat by the pool! Even a shot... the bar takes a bit, but they're cranking out drinks. You can't beat the view with a drink.

Megan M.

Yelp
Amazing recommendation by Serena to come and check this place out. The fish tacos, fish and chips and poke nachos were beyond amazing. She was so welcoming and offered amazing service. Our parents loved the place so much they went back the following day to sit with Serena and enjoy it for a second round. Beautiful to relax and enjoy some good food while sitting ocean front. Thank you Serena for your hospitality. Made our trip one to remember.

Yelp
This is the poolside restaurant at the Sheraton Coconut Resort. Since we were staying at the hotel, it was very convenient to eat here. We also enjoyed the live music on a Friday evening. And the view is amazing since your right on the beach. As for the food, beer battered fish tacos were pretty good. They also serve chicken wings from a virtual restaurant Fire Hen, the wings were bomb! They have tons of flavors and you can even get the sauces on the side but either way the wings are super crispy and still juicy inside. For hotel food it's pretty good and there's lots of seating around and near the pool.

Austin C.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped at The Crooked Surf for a drink before we went into the pool and they did not disappoint to say the least. We got Pina Coladas with a Strawberry Lava Flow and it was delicious. Not to strong but not to weak. The bartender was great as he showed us all the different lava flows you could add to your drinks! The vibe here is laid back and very fun and inviting! If you're staying at the Sheraton or just swinging through stop by and grab a food and/or drinks.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
Nice beachfront bar with decent cocktails and food within the Sheraton Coconut Grove resort. The fries and fried chicken were very good. Friendly service.
google avatar

Collin M.

Yelp
This is pretty much the main hotel bar for the Sheraton at Coconut Beach. Has a lot of TVs and games going on. The servers were pretty great and they do a good job filling up the drinks quickly. The food does take quite a bit longer (1.5 beers to be exact) but we weren't really in a rush so wasn't a big deal. Prices were about standard for the area. The location is great though. You can see the ocean to the east and the beautiful pool to the south.

Magenta B.

Yelp
Kyle Labenz an excellent talented local musician will be playing on New Year's Day, a great reason to go and check out this place! 5:30 - 7:30 PM
google avatar

Krista S.

Yelp
Good vibes here especially if you're staying at the Sheraton. It's self seating and you can even take your food to go and sit by the beach and eat up (you just can't bring your drinks there) Food quality is pretty good but they don't have an extensive menu (just the usual burgers, fish tacos wings etc) Nice workers and one of the nights there was even a live band!
google avatar

Emilee B.

Yelp
Great setting and wonderful music. Sat at the bar and had the most expensive Mai tai of my life - and it was no Monkey Pod! $21 for one...insane! I chose not to eat and give them more of my money. I stay here often and am very disappointed!!
google avatar

Thuy T.

Yelp
Shizz the bartender here absolutely made our 1-night stay at Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach. I felt like we found the best bartender on the island! The Crooked Surf has an good array of cocktails and eats. I read that the food was bland, though we did not have entrees there the arugula watermelon salad and the shishito peppers were great to eat since we had a good amount of cocktails there! Shizz has great stories, great showmanship, and a true craft and at his skill. All the other staff at the bar were very nice and just radiated that day. I highly recommend stopping here for a drink! We did and didn't leave until hours later.

Yelp
Outdoor covered area next to pool at The Sheraton. Nice view of the surf/ocean. I would rate that a 5.0. I had the chicken bowl with grilled peppers and onions and a pineapple teriyaki sauce and some slightly hot aoli sauce. I give it a 4.5. Would be better if it had grilled pineapple in it! Husband had the ahi poke nachos. Rated a 4.5. The fish and sauce were really good. He even liked the pickled cucumbers, and he doesn't like cucumbers! Would be better with regular light nacho chips instead of fried wonton wrappers; they were bulky to hold and cut up his mouth a little bit. Service was pretty good. Rate it a 4.5 because it took a while for us to each get a beer.

Yelp
Resort restaurant and bar at Sheraton Hotel Resort Coconut Beach. Super impressed by the food and drinks, less impressed with speed of service but someone kept telling me "we're on island time now" so that makes it better I guess? Pulled pork sandwiches was so good and my wife's bowl was also delish. Calamari to start was a bit disappointing portion wise but tasked just fine. Cocktails were good and beer was nice and cold! It was nice to have the live music with that killer view too! Worth it for anyone staying or walking by.

Jess R.

Yelp
We went into our HI vacay without researching much for food since we seem to be disappointed when we do that. This is the best food we've had in Oahu and almost all of Kauai as well while still being *somewhat* reasonably priced for Kauai. We had the bbq beef and chicken dynamite bowl and both were excellent. Heard great thanks about poke bowls as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Bar located next to pool, open area. Beautiful location and if the weather is nice it's amazing!! The service has gone down drastically over the past months-year and the food quality as well. They used to have an amazing menu with good choices and everything was tasty and fresh. Now, I prefer to eat somewhere else! The have live music nightly .. typical one person performing & it's hit or miss. The first night the music was fantastic, second night okay and the third night awful!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here three nights in a row and hands down... RAY was the best server of the three nights!! Super kind, attentive and just a great person. The food was pretty good, expensive (but hey, it's a restaurant at a hotel, so it is to be expected). We ordered a variety of dishes, but the repeats were the fish and chips, banana lumpia, burgers and the bomb ginger teriyaki sauce that goes with anything (fries, wings, etc.). Thanks Ray for making our experience stellar!

Andrea L.

Yelp
Y'all. If you order from the Fire Hen menu, don't get tenders; the chicken texture and breading was barely a step up from freezer Dino nuggets. For the price and setting, that really failed expectations. That said, the house rub was delish and the side fries regular portion was huge. Service was delayed / slow.
google avatar

Chris A.

Yelp
Stayed at this resort and had several dinners at the Crooked Surf. Their BBQ Beef and Macaroni Salad was delicious.
google avatar

Elsa S.

Yelp
Great place to have a drink during happy hour while watching the waves. Low key atmosphere makes a great poolside bar. Happy Hour is 3pm-6pm

Brian F.

Yelp
Bartender Jenn was the best bartender I've had on the island. I come here often and have been to every bar around the area and she's my favorite. The food was pretty good and the atmosphere is great. Live music was also wonderful. I give my experience at five out of five because Jenn was accommodating funny And cares about what she does. I'll be coming back soon.

Yelp
Super tasty. It's located inside the Sheraton Hotel just poolside. If you're a guest it seems like a really convenient place to get a bite to eat. Looks like a bar and they serve you if you're wet from the pool too. We arrived at 10:50 and they said they start the lunch at 11am. Not sure what the hours are all day though. LOCO MOCO WAS SOOOOO GOOD. it's a bed of rice, mushrooms, caramelized onions, Wagyu beef patty, and a fried egg with gravy throughout. TRY IT. It's a dish they serve everywhere and I don't know how good it is elsewhere but it was sooo good here. Fish and chips tasted fresh, crispy, airy too. It didn't feel super coated with batter and the taste of the fish was super fresh amazing SERVICE WAS UNBELIEVABLE. Chance was soooo sweet and provided amazing service while we dined here.
google avatar

Bri D.

Yelp
Part of the Kauai Coconut resort I had high expectations for the Marriott brand. Came here for appetizers and drinks. I got the dirty Shirley and the blue something, the dirty Shirley tasted funky. We also got the calamari and poke nachos. The nochos lacked sauce and tuna, it was more of a thick wonton stuck together chips. The calamari was average.
google avatar

Yelp
Avoidable food Overpriced liquor Not-so-cold beer 3 stars for ambiance and really good music on Friday and Saturday

Klemens T.

Yelp
Came here to get small kine drunk before I go to sleep, buuuut thanks to this Crooked Surf bar, they did an amaaaazing job on NOT doing that for me. This bar is located in the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Beach Resort right along the pool and ocean. My friend and I came here and it took about 10mins before we were helped. Drinks we got were ok and the chicken wings were cold and tasted like it was overcooked. The chicken wings had like an vinegary adobo-like taste to it and sprinkled with furikake, all which weren't in the description of the this dish lol. The overall flavor to me was ok, but if my friend knew it tasted vinegary, he wouldn't have ordered it and on top of that, it did taste like it wasn't fresh. We ordered french fries which weren't on the menu and that was really the only thing delicious. For drinks, we ordered the Painkiller (gross), the Pineapple Downfall (mediocre), and other custom drinks. Our waiter is very nice, but he took forever to come around. The bar wasn't too busy, but he was like the only one working the floor and there was only one bartender working the whole bar on top of the floor tables. Overall service was trash, the wait for so long to get my drink or put in an order, that I was freezing outside. I would've had better luck just walking over to Longs, buying alcohol there, and getting all bus in the jacuzzi.
google avatar

Fatima M.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday night. The food was great their drinks are good except that I dunno if there was alcohol in it cuz I didn't feel anything when I ordered my pina clearada! But it was delish. I had their poutine. The fries were perfectly light and crisp and the flavors where well balanced. The service staff were really nice too.
google avatar

Jie L.

Yelp
We stayed at the sheraton Kauai in coconut beach, so this was a matter of convenience. You can order your food and drinks pool side. Happy hour is 3 - 6, I was not able to grab a picture of the updated menu, but prices have hiked since the photos I've found on Yelp. The food is not the best thing ever, but the convenience is hard to beat.
