National City Restaurants to Visit | Eater San Diego

"Tijuana-style birria is the house specialty at this Highland Avenue outpost. The straightforward menu offers birria in bowl servings or stuffed into crispy, red-coated tacos and quesadillas. Dip your tacos into the consome which cooked the birria for an extra splash of beefy, spicy flavor." - Mario A. Cortez

There was not much parking but it is california. Service was a bit slow they were nice. I ordered the birria Ramen, birria tacos and, asada tacos. I give them all 5 stars. Special liking to the salsa which had just a little spice at the end with a lot of flavor.

Alondra

Google
Food delicious however they take forever to attend you we were the only ones there yet they were chatting with each other we were starving they weren't attending us we kept on having to ask for items and the place felt iky mind you the tables we were at would smell because of the trashcan close to them

Keyra De la Riva

Google
The place was very relaxing but the tortillas tasted and smelled a bit weird, the birria had too much spices that I couldn’t even feel the birria and they don’t give any onion or cilantro on the side, they just throw them in the birria. Plus another side of tortillas was $3.75 and they are really thin (not worth it)

Google
The birria tacos are good, but not life changing. They aren't greasy enough for me. My suggestion is to get a cup of consume to dip them in. Takes the flavor up a notch. I like the little patio. It blocks the road, so it's like being somewhere else. The staff are friendly and attentive.

Google
It's a must whenever we are in San Diego to come get some birria tacos here. The meat is tender and flavorful also the consome is very delicious. 10/10 would recommend

Google
Very friendly. Wonderful customer service. My first time eating Birria tacos. Soooo Good 👍 👌 👏 😋 Thank you again.

Oscar Sanchez (OZ)

Google
Overall okay experience, I was expecting more of a flavor burst but the birria and the consomé missed the target for me. Didn’t take photos of my food sorry it was cold and I couldn’t bare to eat cold tacos.

Jessica Manzo

Google
Tortillas were bad. Returned it and got my money back at least but cashiers questioned me as if I were lying. All they had to do was smell the tortillas like I started

Yelp
First time customer. This birria spot is located in the heat of National City. They serve Tijuana style beef birria that can be enjoyed in a bowl, taco, or quesadilla. I visited on a Monday around midday and there was no waiting for a table. They have both patio and a dining room area. I was greeted by Lucia who was welcoming and quickly prepared some garnishes for my meal after getting seated. I ordered a large birria bowl and requested they add "nervio," which is soft beef tendon. The plate came with warm tortillas, diced cilantro and onions. The birria did not lack flavor and was well seasoned. Good portions for a $13 plate. I believe this place is open every day. Only downside is the limited parking. You might have to park around the block or across the street. I will definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a delicious plate of TJ style birria. Cliente primerizo.

Yelp
Food was good, service was fast, and the ambiance was very relaxing. We visited 664 in National city, though soon we'll try the location closer to home on Imperial. The tacos were tasty. The salsa was excellent and complimented the meat very well. My husband order two quesabirrias and I ordered two tacos. We shared a drink- it was a good size, about 24 oz cup of Jamaica. Overall good experience, recommend to anyone looking for a quick, somewhat affordable lunch. My only recommendation is more for folks who like their food a bit saltier. The meat is delicious but was slightly under salted.

Yelp
This Highland Ave location in National City is one of a few locations in San Diego County. There were ample street parking on a Saturday for lunch, which was good. You can't miss the vibrant red awning and signage of this eatery. It was a little confusing when you enter as there isn't a host and we weren't sure if we were supposed to just sit anywhere, wait for someone to seat us, or order first. After asking a server, we were told to just sit where we'd like. We waited for menus, but none were brought over so we looked at pictures of menus on Yelp! A server came over not long after and took our order. She spoke only in Spanish, but since I don't really speak Spanish, I just told her what we'd like in English. The authenticity of this interaction made it seem really promising, especially since we were the only nonSpanish speaking table there. A bowl of slices radishes & lime wedges, as well as a squirt bottle of their spicy house salsa sauce were dropped off at our table. My excitement was building up in anticipation for fulfilling my recent Birria Taco craving. Our 3 birria tacos & 3 Quesabirria tacos arrived and whey looked awesome. I was ready for the flavor bomb party that was about to happen in my mouth. Unfortunately, their Birria was bland. Their spicy house salsa was also bland. There was no salt on the table, which would have helped, but never have I ever had a bland taco or birria. I asked my partner if it was just me, but glad that it was the birria and not my tastebuds. The tortillas were nice and the meat was very tender & juicy. If there was only seasoning & flavor. While we finished the rest of the tacos, I decided to check some reviews on their Yelp! page. Turns out there are numerous reviews that also mention bland food. There were also many complaints about bad or rude service, which I have to say we didn't encounter. The service we had from beginning to paying was fine. Our server was pleasant and from what I observed, service was fine restaurant wide. It was a disappointing birria taco experience at a place that specializes in birria. It wasn't horrible, but definitely not memorable in a good way.

Yelp
I've seen it all over San Diego, and it's like taunting me to try its birria tacos that are popping up on my recommendation. I figure why not give this location, which seems to carry the most reviews, just a try. With its own standalone corner spot, it serves families and folks with its simple menu, and I thought that would bring good service from the staff here. The interiors seem to have upgraded a bit with remarkedly clean restrooms for now, and of course, its TJ-themed meat is where it draws its repeat customers. The tacos come in hot and flavored with juicy oozing oil. The cheese was plenty, but I also enjoyed just birria taco straight up for its natural fatty flavors.

Yelp
Very Bad Service To Start Off With I Came In For Two Orders & Was Told They We're Serving My Food Already Then And There But They We're Not ! About 2 Or 3 Different Orders That Came After Me Got There Food Before I Did ! I Had To Go Up To The Counter And Remind Them I Haven't Gotten My Food & Tell Them My Order AGAIN And THEN He Started Making My Food Then And There, To Me That Is Very Bad Service !! The Food Was Okay But The Condiments Were NOT The Lemons Were Dry & Looked To Be At Least A Couple Days Old With Absolutely No Juice In Them ALL Seeds & So Did The Sliced Raddish It Was Kind Of Slimey Like When There Old I Had To Get My Own Elsewhere ! It's A Nice Setting & Good Atmosphere But If I Was The Owner I Would Have To Talk To The Employees About This Before You Loose Customers Regarding The Service & The Disposal Of Old Condiments Instead Of Trying To Use What They Got ! UNACCEPTABLE

Yelp
Good spot for birria! Very similar to the real thing. The meat needs a bit of salt but if you add the salsa it has a good amount of salt.

Yelp
Hands down best birria I have ever had in San Diego. Sometimes it's a hit or miss on the tortillas hard or then can be soft. But the flavor is all I can say does it for me Staff are amazing. Looks like lots of kids with little experience but they are trying so that's a plus we all start somewhere. If you are looking for some dank food this is it 10/10 hands down

Jessica S.

Yelp
Over all service is great. But the food is disgusting!! Too chewy, old flavorless. Disappointed for the heavy buck we paid. We left half the food behind. Never again!

Angel M.

Yelp

Yelp
These taste like authentic tijuana birria tacos! The service is fast, the tacos are normal size (big) they do charge for the consome but its good. The price is fair, restaurant is ok they have indoor and outdoor dinning. Good birria tacos

Yelp
My first time here. I always pass by, but never stop. Well I was hungry and wanted a quick meal. So I bought 2 birria tacos. These tacos are served very hot to the touch.. the tacos are topped with cilantro and onions. The meat alone is pretty tasty. The meat is flavorful, but not overwhelming. I wouldn't say its the best I have had, but they are good. And for 2.75 each. I will come again. Their salsa is pretty good as well. Spicy but not tear jerking. I got the tacos to go. Since the restaurant is right off highland, a main street. It can get noisy from the cars. The server was nice and since there was 1 person a head of me. I got my food fast. I recommend to come in the afternoon. I have seen this place pretty full at night.
google avatar

Sophia G.

Yelp
Out of all there locations this one is the best the birria is very flavorful and has so much taste the staff are very helpful and friendly the menudo is also good but could use some butchering to the meat me and my family enjoyed we will definitely be back

Yelp
Was in the Chula Vista area and craved birria tacos... I will drink the consume I don't care how hot it is outside it's SO GOOD. There were always customers coming in and out and my friends have always heard of good reviews here. And the customer service was exceptional! They are so helpful and quick; thank you very much. Overall, a great experience! *You have to order the consume separately + they give extra limes !

Natalia S.

Yelp
He ido a bastantes birrierias porque me encantan, y de verdad que jamás había comido un taco sin sabor. No me lo acabé porque me dio algo de náuseas. Le tuve que poner mucho limón y mucha salsa para que supiera a algo. No volveré mil disculpas.

Yelp
Happened to be near this place and decided to give it a try. It was pretty good especially the consume. Three tacos was enough and filling. The orchata was sweet enough to enjoy as well. Plenty of space to sit inside, I went during lunch so the place was empty. But service is definitely fast. Another gem in beautiful San Diego!

Yelp
I went with my pregnant wife for a quick brunch and of course cause she was craving for some birria We ordered 6 quesabirria's and they were delicious! We also ordered the extra birria soup which was amazing as well and made for more tacos if you still arent fully full! I had my bottled coca cola and my wife had a horchata which we both loved! We will definitely be back to eat here again! A+++ service too!

Yelp
The first time I (remember) having birria was last year in TJ with my boyfriend and his brother. I had regular birria tacos and quesabirria tacos along with the consomé (which is basically the birria broth). I fell in love. I had been craving birria for a while and I did not get any the last time I was in TJ, so I was hoping to find a spot in San Diego to fulfill my cravings. I think I found my spot. (PS: My boyfriend told me 664 is the TJ area code, so I dig the name!) We went around 11AM on a weekday (which was also a holiday), and it was not busy, but there were some tables that were filled. We started to wait in line, but I guess it was the takeout/pickup line. Not even a minute later the worker asked if we were dining in and we said yes, then she pointed at a table to sit at. Once we were seated, someone brought out a plate of salt, limes, radishes and hot sauce. I also noticed our napkin container was empty, but someone else filled it with napkins before I needed to ask. Then a worker came up to us and we were able to order. We ordered quesabirria tacos with consomé and two drinks (coke and sangria). The total came out to about $30, which was not too bad, but of course much more expensive in comparison to TJ (and consomé is free in TJ, at least where I went and where my boyfriend has been). Though the quality was pretty similar! Even my boyfriend agreed that the tacos were good. The tortillas were crispy, the cheese was not too overwhelming, and the birria was very tender. All of this plus dipping it in the consomé was just heaven on earth. By the time we were finishing up, more people started to arrive. The workers then came up to us with a card reader and we paid that way. All of the workers were wearing their masks. There are tables outside and they are pretty distanced. There is also an indoor area, but I believe there is very limited seating (or none since we are currently going back to purple tier). I know that this place is available to order through Postmates and Uber Eats for sure because the drivers from these services picked up food.

Yelp
Food is amazing the staff are very kind it's clean and a good environment 100% recommend coming here for yummy food!
google avatar

Yelp
Worst customer service. Food is just ok. Not worth coming back with the staff's attitude. Stay away
google avatar

Preston S.

Yelp
Amazing Birria! I would recommend adding cheese and the consume with it! My group ordered 25 tacos and it took only 10 minutes to finish our order! Not a long wait at all. Not much parking in the area so be warned or take it to go!

Yelp
Quesabirra had a HAIR in it!! never had problems here before, loved their food so i cut them some slack when i saw this and called to let them know about it like "hey there's someone's HAIR in my food, fix that for the future and you guys should use hairnets." they couldn't understand what i meant. and then they tried offering me some sort of discount. I don't want that. Id like my food to be sanitary and NOT have a hair in it. and it's not just laying there either but it's TANGLED IN THE MEAT .
google avatar

David V.

Yelp
Always a great place to start your morning after a long night. Yes, it will cure your handover! The Birria served here is the closest I can find to "grandma's recipe" from deep in Baja California. The Agua frescas taste homemade, whereas the horchata has cinnamon floating at the bottom of the cup also. They also serve Menudo which is a favorite that my family tends to order. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
google avatar

Tony G.

Yelp
Tacos and food are on point, simple menu, for myself eating at the restaurant is the best way to enjoy
google avatar

Yelp
Lil dudes gave me raw tortillas like they changed skin color and my meat tasted like i peed on chicken ts was good though

Yelp
We were able to walk in and be seated right away. The location sits conveniently on Highland Ave. This TJ themed birrieria hits the spot when you're hungover, hungry, or plain craving birria. The meat is very flavorful and juicey. We had quesabirrias (cheese birria taco with corn tortilla) and a madrazo (flour cheese birria quesadilla). Another thing we found awesome was that they have extended their hours as we had been craving birria for a couple weeks but knew they closed in the early evenings. With these new extended hours, it will make it even more convenient for us to get our fill in. Overall, the food is amazing and the service is great! Come check it out.
google avatar

Denia R.

Yelp
The birria and salsa had no flavor whatsoever. They took a while to bring us our food and when they did they didn't bring lemons or salsa so we had to wait again. When they did the just brought one little container of salsa for 12 tacos.

Chris G.

Yelp
Service was slow and order to go girls have no customer care experience there just running around asking about other orders not knowing whats going on or who they are helping and last but not least they gave me few items wrong in the order it's self

Yelp
Just had the most satisfying lunch I've had in a long time. After doing an errand with family. We decided to take a trip to National City for lunch. There is Mexican food place there that serves birria tacos and consome. They have other things on the menu but we were there strictly for the birria. Birria is slow cooked meat cooking in it's own juices. The birria here is beef. Put in tortillas they are made into tacos and the juice is made into Consume. A juicy meaty soup that you can eat alone or as a sauce to dip your tacos into. With only having take out. No dine-in at the moment due to city/state Covid rules. Our bag was additionally packed with cut radishes, chopped white onions, sliced limes, chopped cilantro and small containers of hot sauce to add even more flavor; and if that isn't enough. They give you more tortillas that were dipped in sauce. Dipping a taco in the consome and taking a bite just seemed over the top decadent. Every bite was amazing. If your a fan of shredded beef. This is it. 664 TJ Birrieria is a great place to have lunch. National City and the surrounding area is littered with good Mexican food options but this place stands out. The food is amazing. Not cheap but better that good. The staff is friendly. The location is easy to find and has plenty of street parking. Support local business especially the good ones. 664 TJ Birrieria is fantastic. Eat here.

Yelp
So my family was craving Birria so on a Saturday morning I stopped by to grab a large order of Birria to go. The order I got was skimpy. I was disappointed. It tasted good but sometimes it can be bland. This isn't the best Birria spot but it is decent and does the job.
google avatar

Ady G.

Yelp
I decided to try this place out even after reading all of the reviews. I'll definitely be back. The service is slow but that's really an unfair thing to complain about when there's only two ladies working the front and answering the phones for to go orders. People can only move so fast. That's something you should consider when going here. If you're in a hurry, this isn't the place to enjoy birria. Other than that, the food is amazing!
google avatar

Sheena J.

Yelp
Amazing. My boyfriend lives in National City and the last time I visited SD I wanted to try those tacos that people dip into that orange soup thing. To be honest, some people have started making birrueria tacos in Hawaii but charging them for waay to much, like 12 tacos for $40-50 worth. But here my boyfriend said I'd actually be getting more for less. So we decided to come one morning and I was not disappointed AT ALL. They're real good at following covid and keep their masks on when interacting with you and taking your order. We sat at one of the little booth tables right outside the window to order and it didn't take long before our tacos came in (we both got 3 each). The tacos were so juicy and oily--but in a good way. Especially that soup/oil thing you dip them in, omfg. If I really wanted to, I could have ordered so much more and just spent the day there. There was so much flavor and texture going on that I am definitely glad I waited to try birrueria tacos here in SD versus paying so much more for them from the people in Hawaii selling and making them. Delicioso~
google avatar

Shayna L.

Yelp
Service was slow... and we were one of a few. Tacos were kinda basic... the meat could have been more flavorful. Tacos were def better than the the tostada.

Nadia A.

Yelp
Don't waste your time and money here there's better birria spots. Food was average. The staff need to work on their customer service.
google avatar

Aleida P.

Yelp
I've tried "664 tj birrieria" in various locations in San Diego & Las Vegas and they have not been bad but I did not like my food today. The tacos were awful, the tortilla was falling apart, the meat was dry & the 1/2 order of birria was stacked with a gross amount of shredded meat & the consome had no flavor. For their prices I've definitely tried better & will not be returning. It was just gross.
google avatar

Yelp
The best Birria in San Diego! Highly recommended!! I have been to the chains in all of San Diego, and they are all consistent. Authentic to the max!
google avatar

Yelp
GOOD ASF!!!!!! 10/10 recommend!!!!! Birria Tacos One of the best Birria spots I have been to here in San Diego!!! Consomé was bomb af'

Yelp
i called in a order and was missing 2 quesatacos. when i called asking if i could just stop by again and grab my missing food i was told to bring back the whole order. it was incredibly difficult to get my missing food. it was a $60 order. they lost a customer over 2 quesatacos. employee didn't want to give me the quesatacos because she would get charged the food, i find this incredibly shady of the owner if this is true.
google avatar

Jasmine C.

Yelp
Been craving birria tacos and seen this place on social media so I had to check it out. This review is during covid. They offer take out and outdoor seatings only. I came on Saturday at noon and waited less than 2 mins to be seated. As soon as we finished eating there was a line outside. There's about 6-7 tables. I ordered the quesabirria tacos (it comes with cheese) and consome which is the soup that the meat is cooked in. P.S. dip your tacos in the soup!!! The tacos were not greasy! The meat was tender and the soup was so flavorful. It was so good.
google avatar

Yelp
Worst service ever . I don't know how many times we come and they are unorganized. They seat two different parties and the party that comes in after us gets serviced before us and gets there food before we even get a drink let alone even have someone come to our table to let us order . They need to have better management on there servers and customer service . At a point an time this place was actually good but now it's gone to shit . Negative stars if they had any.

Samantha C.

Yelp
FIRST AND LAST TIME COMING HERE!!!!!! Horrible service. Got seated and had no one ask us for our order for over 20 min although the place was almost empty. Had to then wait 40 minutes for food to come out and it ended up not being our complete order. Afterwards we had to ask all waitresses for our bill repeatedly. Had one waitress ignore us multiple times. We had to stand up for them to even acknowledge us. Waited 20 minutes for the bill. HORRIBLE SERVICE... THERE ARE WAY BETTER BIRRIA PLACES WORTH YOUR TIME... would rate it 0 if I could. BEWARE! Waitress press their own tip before handing you the checkout machine and beg for them after providing unacceptable service.

Evelyn V.

Yelp
Food was great but service was horrible I usually go with my colleagues and Pay separate but for some reason today the waiters got upset and said that couldn't be done and that they never have done that Felt like she was telling me I was lying

Martinez A.

Yelp
Lo peor de la birria los limones mas secos que nada el servicio es de lo mas feo una vez fuimos esoeramos una hr para que nos tomaran la orden nos fuimos por su falta de atención al cliente
google avatar

Valeria C.

Yelp
This place has gone downhill in recent months. I hadn't been back since June, when I received literally no meat and only fatty bits. But I decided to give them a try again and see if it was better. Nope. I ordered two large orders to go, which was my usual. It was 21 dollars, and I left an 18% tip. When I picked up my food, I thought I could smell something burnt, but dismissed it. When I arrived home, I noticed the smell was stronger. I opened the tortillas that came with and all of them were burnt! I understand one or two burning, but all of them??? Wtf?!?! I'm never coming back.

Sonia Q.

Yelp
Delicious!! The best in town! I recommend this restaurant for having the best birria in town. I come from Mira Mesa just to have birria.
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
I visited this place awhile back just leaving my review now. The birrias were soggy and meat was bland. I felt like they were rushing because they were closing but dang treat the very last customer food with the up most food respect. I am sure they can do better for sure. Maybe if I was to visit them when they arent closing I would have a better experience.
google avatar

Carolina F.

Yelp
First time here ... waited for a little over 20 minutes and no one came to our table to take our order. Another family comes in after us and get their order taken right away. I understand it may be a busy place and it could take longer than expected to get our food. I did see many waitress back and forth getting food for other tables. I just think its wrong that no one even came to our table to let us know there would be a wait on top of that the other family who had just walked in got attention right away. On our way out, i thank one of the waitress and said we would leave since no service was provided. Waitress was rude and rolled her eyes on me. I would it 0 stars if possible.

elizabeth m.

Yelp
Stopped by to have breakfast yesterday and unfortunately the Birria was horrible. I ordered 2 Birria quesa tacos and a Birria quesadilla and my husband ordered the Birria plate. The Birria was so bland, I added salt and lemon to help with the blandness, and that didn't help. The broth of My husbands Birria plate was very watered down and tasteless!
google avatar

Frank D.

Yelp
The Birrieria here is really good I took my girlfriend here for her first time and she loved it. The consome, Birrieria tacos, and quesobirrieria tacos are my go to when i eat here. Also I recommend getting the Jamaica as a beverage. Unfortunately the workers here don't speak very good English and it's hard for them to understand what I want when I order. The service is also hit or miss. There's been times where I've waited for 10 minutes for my food and there's been times where I've waited for 15-20 minutes just to get my order taken.
google avatar

Chae L.

Yelp
My first time trying birria quesetacos with consome. The tacos are made fresh with 2 tortillas and melted cheese. The tacos are very filling. The consome is like a stew. There are two types: one with shredded beef and the other without. You dip the taco in the consome and it's delicious! They are only doing takeout due to stay at home order.
google avatar

Yelp
Birria is the hot new thing, and this place makes it mouth-watering. Simple menu of tacos, quesobirria, and the like. Delivered hot, quick, and so tasty. The salsa alone is worth the price of admission. Don't forget to get a cup of consommé for dipping!
