There is a vicious existential crisis going on with the very moody night guy. Casteneda writes about different types of neurotics & psychotics in our society, and goes so far as to name some of them by template.
This guy is the poster child for The Petty Tyrant. Apparently he's got some hard and fast rules that are not posted anywhere but they are also arbitrary- he will spit venom at someone who comes through the door to spend money for daring to enter the unlocked store past midnight because he has hours he created to avoid the unpleasant transients who he freely refers to as "jobless bums"... But he can be seen catering to a customer who is stuffing money into the gambling machines all hours.
He is very free with his insults and judgments but literally is in possession of no facts or backstory of any Soul he hurls invective at. If questioned he will attempt to kick the person out with a lifetime ban, on occasion he has threatened violence and challenged physical altercation but always with the caveat that the person he is threatening 'throw the first punch' so that he can invoke the law when it serves him.
He will also invoke that he occupies a caste of primacy, because he has a job and a house... Meanwhile he has never engaged a single person he accuses with a conversation about what their backstory is. He is essentially a very simple minded man who paints with a broad and cruel brush. Quite clearly suffering from some manner of trauma and or inferiority complex.
I have endured much from this man child, but the final straw has been in denying me my walking stick (my clean 4 ft bamboo, which was erroneously conflated with a 6-foot bo staff that I use outside and have never brought into the business- this will be borne out by video) when I set it off to the side upon entering the empty store... and accusing me of not being handicapped. My primary care physician and my lawyer will be happy to prove otherwise.
A heartbreaking addendum to the story is that I had thought that the day manager, an older gentleman was a man of greater reason, but when I approached him about the issue he immediately became defensive and took the side of the night clerk.
This is all regrettable because I believe that I may have met the actual owner in the past and he struck me as a dignified and measured individual. The people that represent his investment?? Rotten, without empathy and dispossessed of any scope of understanding.
