San Francisco Bakery Black Jet Baking Co. Is Selling Adorably Explicit Cakes to Raise Money for Planned Parenthood | Eater SF

"Regarded as serving some of the best fried chicken in the city, South is facing an impending closure amid a legal battle between co-owner N’Gina Guyton and ex-husband Ian Kavookjian over her legal right to shutter the business without his prior knowledge; a judge issued an emergency order preventing Guyton from closing the restaurant on June 30, but Guyton says she’s done, and Kavookjian also wants rights to the restaurant’s recipes despite not having worked there for years." - Lauren Saria

My boyfriend loved the Steak Sandwich with fries and I absolutely loved the Chilean Salmon with Broccolini and Quinoa. We had the mocktails since we don’t drink. Overall— Just delicious. Opal was our server and she was great. Not bad prices. Will come back to try brunch.

Google
First time visit, but won’t be our last. Our server Salomon was excellent and helped us with our selections. The food was excellent and prices were very reasonable. We started off with the Urban Sour, Jalapeño Margarita, Whisky Sour, Garden Tini all fresh and and full of flavor. If your a light beer can you have to try the Outlaw Lite. Ordered the Tuscany Chicken great flavor with the sun-dried Tomatoes. The Steak was cooked to perfection (medium rare) fries were light and crunchy! Penne Pasta was light, delicious and cooked just right. The Nashville Chicken was Hot, but not over the top. It was cooked just right crispy and the onside, nice a moist on the inside. I’d order it again. Order the Urban Salad, but was served with our meal, so no room we were all full! The layout is wide open, so when busy it’s loud, but feels very homey.

We must have went on an off day, compared to other reviews. We had a reservation for 6 people and waited to be sat, then about 10 minutes passed before the host brought waters for the table, and 10 more minutes before our server finally greeted the table. Our party ordered drinks and food all together at 7:40; it was not until 8:15 that we received half of the table’s drinks. Our server was very kind although forgetful - one friend ordered Brussels sprouts as an appetizer with us and they came later than all other apps. Entrees arrived at 8:30, then they told another friend that they were out of the beer she ordered an hour before. Food: The buffalo chicken bites were good, fried green tomatoes were fine but my friends reported feeling ill after, and the baked potato fries were just plain French fries with a pile on top. My pasta primavera arrived and was honestly slimy (photos) . My friend’s medium rare steak frites arrived and were very overcooked. The Tuscan chicken and the wings both arrived cold to the touch. As someone who’s worked in food service I hate to leave negative food reviews, however something is up. Even if the food options were unique, that speed of service is unacceptable for a restaurant that took so many reservations at once. Last note is that the restaurant is attached to the end of a church with a beer garden style yard in the front. The parking lot is accessed by stairs and a gravel path which was wobbly and likely inaccessible for strollers/elderly. If our food had arrived warm and delicious, then the situation could have ended on a good note, but it felt like one issue after another. Three stars because the manager was very apologetic and our meal was comped due to cold food/long wait times. I believe this restaurant has potential once they work out the kinks.

Lol listen to what everyone says: It looks like a church BUT JUST GO IN!! Trust me it'll be so worth it🤌 The food was absolutely incredible, and I have a whole family of picky eaters🤣 I got the Steak Frites (sorry for the photo, it was almost gone before I remembered to take a picture!) with sweet potato fries and mashed potato. Listennn the steak?? Melted in my mouth it was so juicy and flavorful and everyone at the table said that the mash was the best they ever had! I am not from here, but I wish I could have dinner here every night 🫶

Google
Steak and Chimichurri was amazing. Beautiful building. Salad was fresh, ranch dressing was bomb. Halona our server was super polite, helpful and gave great service. The apple funnel cake for desert was also wonderful!! Would definitely come back when in town. Overall awesome experience.

Google
What a lovely dinner place! First off, the inside decor is absolutely gorgeous and the table side service was warmly gracious - with impeccable timing. I had the 71 Smash-burger with a side of tomato basil soup, and it was simply transcendent. Friend’s Nashville Hot Chicken was perfect-o. Just the perfect amount of hot to bloom in all the spicy ways, but not aggressive. Next time, I am getting two orders of Brussels Sprouts though, they were madly delish! 10/10 recommend.

Google
All in all a great experience. Seems a bit weird to have a beer in a church but it’s a cool place. Food was very good and service was too. The Mrs had the Salmon with quinoa and I had the Chicken Bacon Ranch sandwich with fries. We also had Fried Green Tomatoes with Jalapeno pimento cheese. Washed it all down with Outlaw Lite beer and water. My favorite part was the Ric Flair painting hanging in the dining room…wooooooooo. We will definitely be going back.

Google
This was an old church turn into various businesses, the main entrance is the restaurant. The decor is simple but very cute, love how the atmosphere. The food was great had lunch and started off with the Brussel sprouts app, they are amazing, then had the salmon and chicken sandwich, everything was fresh and well made food was delicious and the service was great, will be coming back again.

Yelp
My wife and I heard about the Sunday brunch and decided to give it a go. We were surprised to find it as busy as it was and had a few minute wait, but not bad at all. The inside was bright and airy as this building is a converted church built in 1930 (found that out from the menu). They had immediate seating outside, but the water looked to rain soon so we decided a few minute wait was our better option. the proximity to the Baker Creek preserve also makes this a go to option after a morning on the bike trails. My wife had a Mimosa to start the meal, and I was surprised how quickly it came. I ordered house ricotta waffle, country gravy, scrambled egg, breakfast sausage, wisconsin cheddar, hot honey maple syrup. It was either that or the Chicken and waffle and my waiter Calvin said I could't go wrong with either selection. I ordered an extra side of syrup just so I could dip the waffle for extra sweetness if I desired-good choice! My wife ordered the Breakfast flat consisting of naan, country gravy, crumbled sausage, scrambled egg, Wisconsin cheddar, drizzled with hot honey maple syrup and another win for our taste buds. We will be back and this time bring our fur baby as the outside seating is dog friendly.

Yelp
This is the third time I've visited this restaurant and each time, I love it even more. I don't know how I had forgotten how marvelous the French fries area. They are fried in a delicious, mouth-watering, savory, yummy stupendous batter that is out of this world. Our server was patient with us as we had a toddler and an infant. I had the Portobello Philly Cheese steak vegetarian sandwich on a Hoagie Roll and it was outstanding. I adjured our server to let the owner and kitchen staff know that I would die and go to heaven if they put garlic fries on the menu. She said I am not the only one who has requested that so who knows. The POWER OF YELP REVIEWS. They are not on the menu, but if they were, I would probably drive the 35 miles round trip once a week just to indulge. I implore you to start the chant!! Yelp
Enjoyed a visit for lunch after reading great reviews. The place did not disappoint. Cool idea of turning a church into a restaurant and other businesses. There are a good number of steps in order to get into the restaurant, not sure if they offer handicap accessible entrance. The service was good and food was fantastic! The vibe and interior decor was great. Plenty of available free parking and next to a park too. I will definitely be back for future visits.

Yelp
Such a great vibe and beautiful restaurant. Inside is such an open and warm environment that offers a quality service. The food was tasty and we would be willing to go back for another visit.

Yelp
What a great meal we just ate! I had a steak sandwhich and it was great! Steak was cooked just right and no grissle!! My son had the Tuscan chicken, mashed potatoes and quinoa. Exploding with flavor and moist. Mashed potatoes were amazing and the quinoa was very tasty! They also have coke products, thank goodness. Ambience is cool too, its an old church with a great vibe. Oh, yea, side salad was very yummy with the basalmic dressing. Yummy!

Yelp
My friends and I visited for a concert and were looking for a good brunch place. Boy, did we find one! Since it was a Sunday afternoon, pulling up to a full sized Baptist Church was a little disconcerting. It took us a few minutes to realize that it had been repurposed and was now a multifunctional space. Since it was right after opening, there was a little bit of a line, but it moved quickly, and the service was very friendly. Everyone was so cheerful and friendly that it made the wait go by quickly. Inside, it is very tastefully decorated to celebrate its past as a church but also embrace the nature trails and biking paths nearby. It was a perfect balance of the old and new. Oh man, now the food! Everything that we had was absolutely amazing. The appetizers, our main courses, and the very reasonably priced carafes of mimosas. Everything was piping hot, looked as delicious as it tasted, and had very generous portion sizes. This is a great place to stop for brunch if you are anywhere in the Knoxville area!

Yelp
What a great setting! This restaurant is in a converted church sanctuary. Great decor, live plants, cool lighting all around, especially the back lit bar. We were seated quickly and our server was attentive. The food was pretty good, hubs got the ribeye with fries and I ordered a cup of soup and a cocktail. Husband liked his steak, my tomato soup was cold so I had to send it back to be heated up. It was ok. The prices were good, healthy portions and we enjoyed ourselves. We'll likely be back.

Yelp
Service superb, Mabel gave us time to view the menu and gave suggestions Chicken tortilla bowl of soup was hugs, it had great flavor yet needed to be warmer/hot The place is an old church in/out Good vibes

Yelp
Fell in Love with location the second I found it as I was driving aimlessly in the area. The food is pretty good. The only thing lacking is the service. Went 3 different times & service was different all 3 times. And never was it busy. (Always had enough servers) None of which was stellar service.

Yelp
I really encourage a visit here. The location itself is interesting with chic decor and just a wholesome feel. The staff are amazing and made really good suggestions when they shared what they liked The table next to us was very friendly and made some suggestions too. This is a good place to meet new & interesting folk (at least it was when I went). The menu accommodates carnivores, vegetarians, vegans, and gluten free!!! There is an amazing drink selection if you're into booze & brews. I also felt the price was standard and the portion was perfect. I did not need the chipotle sauce on my bowl, but I tried it anyway & , as in it was delectable . Definitely going here again when I'm in the area.

Yelp
Met a friend here the other day, and it was a delight. Great choice for a spot to enjoy Sunday late lunch. Unfortunately, the brunch with until three and that's around doing that. But I was craving a salad so it worked out anyway. Plus nobody really should do brunch after three anyway, right? It was pretty hard to find not well marked, but that kind of added to the allure. Situated in an old church, the interior was absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful shelves to hold the alcohol and pews for half the table to sit on. Even the bathrooms made me feel like I was going to youth group from the smell to the style. They really class up the space, and now the ceiling is adorned with beautiful Edison bulbs and greenery which is sadly fake, but they do have plenty of real plants around too. The harvest bowl I got was delicious. Full of greens and quinoa and beans. And avocado. Yum. I added tofu, but I wish I had known it was fried. If I knew it was fried, don't think I would've opted for that. But I will say I like most fried food It was delicious. At four dollars for four squares of tofu that weren't that healthy I felt a little disappointed. Not to mention the dressing felt like it was predominantly mayo. Something like that I kind of wish was served with balsamic, or at least that option. I should've asked. I did appreciate the vegetarian add on option tho! The service was exceptionally kind and attentive, very professional, and great recommendations.

Yelp
Met an out-of-town friend here for a leisurely meal after she braved the heat on the nearby bike trails. Note that GPS does not do a great job of finding this spot yet, but if you see a large brick church, you've come to the right place and it's on the right hand side across the street from the Baker Creek Preserve trail parking lot. It is obviously a super cool, older building with a lot of character and the owners have meticulously restored and renovated the indoor space. Pull super hard on the front door or you may think it is locked (expanded wood from this wild heat?). Once you get in, it is so unique and inviting. Amazing woodwork and windows and very friendly service from start to finish. The weekend brunch menu lasts until 3 (along with reg menu) and the drink and beer selection seemed ample. My friend ordered an Urban Wilderness bowl and I ordered the black bean burger with sweet potato fries. My meal was vegan and hers vegetarian, both with GF options available, FYI. In general, I was blown away with how inclusive the menu is for those with unique dietary needs. My friend liked her bowl and my burger was really well-seasoned, but admittedly a bit dry. I did not notice the glaze but did appreciate the creaminess of the avocado. The sweet potato fries were great! The laid back and eclectic vibe inside (there were people wearing their Sunday church gear mixed with people who had clearly just biked the trails) and inclusive menu will have me come back to try more, especially with my friends who are vegan and/or GF.

Yelp
This is a really cute and modern restaurant that has a lot of potential. I was impressed with the decor and the transformation from an old church into a restaurant. However: ***Vegans Beware*** Before heading over to 71 South, I reviewed their menu on their website and was impressed that they had Mains listed with both the vg (vegan) and ng (no gluten containing ingredients talk with server) designations. When it came time to order, I asked about the Cauliflower Steak Main since I'm not a huge steak sauce fan. During this discussion I found out that the Mains marked as (vg) for vegan, were actually NOT vegan. Only the "main" itself was vegan (and also gluten free in this case), but the sides were not vegan and gluten free. Turns out the mashed potatoes that come with both "vegan" mains are not vegan and the quinoa that is listed on the menu as being gluten free, is not because it now contains barley and new menus have not been printed to reflect that the "quinoa" is no longer ng. It should be noted that the menus are 8 1/2 x 11 pieces of paper that you could edit and print on a home computer. After many questions about the menu, we realized the only things we could eat were the Brussels without bacon and cheese and the roasted beet hummus. We had ordered two drinks as well, a beer and a mixed drink. Once we got our food, it was unremarkable and tasteless. My mixed drink had little flavor and can best be described as being flat in its profile. The server came to ask how our meal and drinks were. We were honest and it was clear she wasn't taking it well and seemed like she wanted to cry. We explained it was not her fault, and we were just trying to provide feedback for improvement of the menu. We told her we'd be happy to discuss further with a manager or supervisor and she told us she was one. Shortly thereafter, Zack came over to introduce himself as a manager and we shared with him our concerns. He said servers are supposed to explain that vg and ng items don't mean "everything" on the dish is vg and ng. I have never been to a place that advertised vegan and gluten free items on their menu, that were not. I explained that could be dangerous for someone relying on such markings. He said he understood, and we hope he does and changes are made ASAP. After pouring our thoughts out about the food, we were worried that our whole meal and drinks would be comped, which we wouldn't have accepted since a lot of people complain at restaurants to get free stuff. That did not happen, the bill came, at full price. I drank maybe three sip of my drink and we left quite a bit of the rest of our food behind. It would have been a decent gesture to at least offer a discount since we'd been clear on our disappointment in the whole meal; and left it up to us to decline. Instead, after the bill was presented in full, our server came back later with a business card for 10% off "in case we ever wanted to come back". We found this odd. More of a "why bother". I wish them luck and hope changes are made, there's a lot of potential there. And while I realize I'm not their target market diner, Vg and ng items should not be included on a menu when they are not. That feels like a bait and switch which leaves the patrons in an awkward position of not wanting to get up and leave when those items don't match their advertised designations.

Yelp
The food was amazing. The wait time wasn't long for a Sunday brunch. Great service too!

Yelp
What a great concept.... A church now a cafe... with a bar in back... plants growing gloriously in.... Holy water‍Ivy growing upside down from the roof and what once housed stained glass windows or so it would appear.. shelfs for the bottles of spirits behind the bar!! Great, comfortable atmosphere.. greeter/ seater was a little on the dry side.. smiles work!!! Main menu offering a wonderful and creative selection and a few extra menus for the weekend and such. Server was timid and not chatty for help in description's but opened up more as we finished up. Food was amazing!! 4 of us.. 4 different menu items and they're FRENCH FRIES ... are amazing OMG! Fun place to go, relax and you'll have much goodness to choose from. Give it a try you'll enjoy what your there for.. great food!

Yelp
Restaurant is opened in an abandoned church. Well designed and decorated. Definitely a nice place to eat breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. Food is pretty good and service is very good. There's a full bar. Giant parking lot is helpful. Several of stores in the church are interesting. I had a smash burger and fries which was good and reasonably priced. Definitely worth a visit to south Knoxville.

Yelp
Hard to find but well worth the hunt! The smash burger was delicious and the fries were amazing. Service and ambiance were great also. Will definitely be back! All the food looked amazing

Yelp
I went here 2 years ago and had a great experience. wanted to try it again and went this past week.... not as good as i remembered. i went on a monday night at 7pm and tried to order 2 different cocktails and an entree that my waiter told me they had run out of. service was also frustrating- our waiter was rushing us to the point that he asked if we "had had a chance to sign our check..." he didn't seem to care at all and was not helpful. the other entree ordered came with the salmon completely raw through the middle... definitely not planning to come back and was let down.

Yelp
We tried this for the first time recently during Sunday brunch and did not regret coming! Definitely a 4.5/5 for the overall experience: +1 - Venue and Vibe - loved the reuse of the existing property and the artwork inside! +1 - Location and Parking - not too bad to find, plenty of parking so don't worry about that! +1 - Cleanliness - looked clean at the table, inside overall, and in the restroom. +1 - Food and Drink - enjoyed all the food, particularly the buffalo cauliflower and bacon. +0.5 - Staff and Service - started off great but ran into some delays and miscommunications, but ended well. Will be back - go check it out!

Yelp
How adorable is an old church that is turned into a restaurant! The vibes were immaculate and so adorable! Next to the drinks which the mimosa is a steal of a deal and the winter berry margarita is such a fix for a sweet tooth. The food is amazing! I didn't try the Brussel sprouts but they smelled amazing! Finally the service; the people working here are phenomenal and greet with with such great energy. Extra thankful to have spent my morning here for brunch!!
google avatar

Yelp
New go-to brunch spot. Mom and I split the Call from Cali, which was an amazing, flavorful breakfast burrito, $10. They also have $3 mimosas!? Absolutely unheard of with that price... and it was a good sized mimosa too. Great atmosphere, good service for how busy it was and you've got to love the prices for how great the quality of food is. They had an outdoor vintage market going on in the parking lot outside as well. Will be returning very soon! A must try brunch spot.

Yelp
A friend and I enjoyed dinner here one evening recently. We were both excited to try out the new restaurant we'd heard about from several friends. It's located in an old church in the Urban Wilderness area of South Knoxville. It's beautifully decorated with simple, clean decor. We had a reservation and were seated immediately in a table/booth combo. Our server immediately greeted us and took drink and appetizer orders. We decided on the baked potato nachos to start with, and we were really pleased with them. For entrees, we both chose bowls. I selected the Urban Wilderness Bowl topped with salmon. I enjoyed the quinoa, avocado, tomatoes and especially the chipotle dressing. The salmon was OK, but had a much stronger fish taste than I normally experience with salmon. My friend chose the Baker Creek Bowl, with grilled chicken and said it was very good. It included more roasted veggies with the quinoa and sweet potatoes. Overall a good experience. The restaurant was super busy, and I suspect they're still working out a few kinks. I'm sure we'll try it again!

Yelp
New eatery in South Knox opened a few weeks ago. As we approached, I thought we were in the wrong location. The restaurant is actually a converted church (1936). Their signage is not well pronounced. The entry is quite interesting...There are high ceilings, arched windows, church pew seating behind the hostess stand and a bar behind that, which almost felt sacrilegious (I didn't know if I should order a drink, say a prayer or ask forgiveness) so to cover ALL basis, I did a little of each...LOL We ordered wine, beer, the "urban wilderness" bowl, Latke sandwich and cheesecake. The service was great and the space is beautiful, reasonably priced and the food was tasty. We definitely have plans to return.

Yelp
Very nice mix of main courses to satisfy meat lovers and vegans at the same time. The sweet potatoes fried with cowboy caviar was amazing. Chicken wings were amazing. The chicken fried steak was dry.

Yelp
We went here last night for my son's birthday and they were incredibly kind. We didn't have a reservation (call ahead is strongly encouraged) and they worked with us the best they could with the availability they had. We ended up getting to our table and it was worth the wait. I should've taken photos of our meals but everyone commented on how good their food was. Several vegetarian options are available. I look forward to returning and to also trying their brunch one weekend.

Yelp
Been here a couple times now. Atmosphere is great. Food is good. Beer is solid. Right next to pump track. I'd recommend it. Be patient as they're still working through "service" being a new open restaurant.

Yelp
First time visit to 71 South. The atmosphere was nice, and lively. The food was hit and miss. The burgers and fries were excellent. The tomato basil soup, and the humus were awful. The soup was not touched, and when the server asked if we wanted to take it to go, I told her it was not good. She walked off without saying a word. The soup was on our check when it came to the table. Overall, the service was bad. Our server had zero personality, and obviously did not like her job, or us.

I'm H.

Yelp
Love the place. Service was great. Monthly special was chicken and dumplings. It was chicken soup with a biscuit crumbled up! Broth was not creamy and dumplings crumbled biscuits? Not good for 1st impression.

Yelp
Not only is the food here top-quality and delicious, the fact that it is located in a renovated church makes it even cooler! The staff are always super friendly and helpful, and the place is always super clean and even decorated for different times of the year. If you're around the south Knox area, you have to check this place out. This is a go-to for me after some adventures in the urban wilderness.

Yelp
Uniquely made delicious food. The Brussels Sprouts were particularly good. Tho' it is kind of difficult to find.

Yelp
One of the best meals I have had since moving here 2 months ago. I got the fried egg sandwich with bacon added and it was very tasty. The only critique would be the bread, seemed it was more for a lunch sandwich and was bigger than the filling by a couple inches. Everything about it tasted great though! The potatoe that come with it looked strange, but they tasted great, if you like pepper, which I do. I did add some ketchup. The restaurant is an old church, it is beautiful, bright and inviting. The decorations are cheerful and engaging. All of the staff was friendly and quick to answer questions and get me seated. It has a large parking lot and there is a sign that a brewery will be opening soon too. I will be returning.

Yelp
Cannot wait to try brunch here! What a cool concept. Love the ambiance and layout. My husband and I had conflicting reviews on this place so I have compromised with a four-star review. Jack at the bar made the most delicious and refreshing drink: Ridge Runner. So good I had two of them. Also tried the St. Sevilla. Like a toned-down version of a creamsicle. I look forward to trying the rest of the cocktails on the menu! Apps: tried loaded potato fries and urban cowboy fries. Would take the potato over the cowboy fries. Husband doesn't like battered fries so he wasn't a fan. He also had complaints over the jarred jalapeños rather than fresh. I take fries any way I can get them, so I liked the loaded fries a lot. Also ordered the latkes. Chipotle sauce wasn't my favorite paired with these, but they make for a good starter. Really enjoyed the Tuscan Chicken. It was a hearty portion with great flavor. I thought I'd have leftovers but I ate the entire thing. Was between that and Chicken Bacon Ranch. Husband got steak frites and was convinced chimichurri added zero flavor. I tried some of his mashed potatoes and they were to die for. I wish I caught the server's name because she was attentive and delightful. Will be back for brunch (without my husband) :)

Yelp
I was there with my family on saint patties day, such a great atmosphere. the food was amazing!! i definitely recommend the patty melt. our server Chloe was very friendly and sweet!

Yelp
Visiting the area and was brought to this restaurant. FABULOUS! The vibe is fire. Love the location of being inside an old church. The continued remodeling taking place to create an spectacular place to dine and hang out is awesome. I wish I lived here to be able to come back again. The food was tasty and well priced. I loved they have a craft cocktail menu. The service was quick and polite. This place in on SoKno and well worth the drive if you are coming from another part of town. The meatball sub my son liked and the sweet potato fries are so good! Wilderness Salad was epic. The grilled cheese and soup was a kids meal but adult size food!

Yelp
We enjoyed the chance to finally visit this unique restaurant. We all shared the food we got so we could experience the different flavors offered . The menu is good with a lot of different offerings. It seemed like they are trying to accommodate a lot of people's preferences. We wanted a couple of items that we didn't realize are only available until 3 pm & we could not order them . I think they need to make a separate menu for brunch offerings & one for what's available after 3 . The menu was a piece of paper so that could be fixed so easily. Don't show us what we can't have, right? The staff we interacted with were friendly & helpful. We got our food & drinks promptly. The things we loved - the cauliflower Buffalo bites , zucchini latkes, sweet potato fries, grilled portobello & Baker Creek bowl , black been burger . The sides that came with the portobello were underwhelming though. The mixed drinks we ordered were decent but nothing too wonderful. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really interesting. A complaint ( & I realize it's nitpicking) is the chairs have rounded backs & there's no place to hang your handbag . We were a party of 4 & all of us had to sit with our bags in our laps. This was just kind of awkward. Also, it has a big set of stairs leading into the building not sure if it's handicapped accessible. When my one friend was in a knee brace she would have had a difficult time coming into the restaurant. It was noted by her that we didn't see signs for a handicapped accessible entry. The little details like this need to be realized & corrected of by owners & managing staff . I will definitely go back because this place has good food & lots of potential.

Yelp
71 South is my new favorite brunch spot! I've tried multiple things from their menu, but my favorite would have to be the fried egg sandwich with latke and bacon added. Another favorite would be their avocado toast! The service is unmatched. Our server Colton was attentive, honest, and quick to know what we needed. He normally bartends, so I'm glad I happened to catch him when he was serving. The atmosphere is amazing! 71 South is an old church that has been converted into a great brunch spot. What a cool concept! 10/10 would recommend!

Yelp
Came here after hearing about it during a prize giveaway. Was greeted and seated nice and quick. The wait staff was pleasant and helpful. The food was amazing! We tried a few veggie apps and split a smash burger. I honestly have to say that everything was outstanding! The apps were perfectly prepared. The beet hummus was refreshing, and the included sliced veggies were tasty and fresh. The Brussels were crunchy and savory. But my favorite was the buffalo cauliflower, as well as the burger. I suggest you give it a try! It's "off in the cut" but well worth the visit. It was also pretty neat being in an old church - the acoustics in this place are wild!

Yelp
If you're looking for a quick summary and don't want an in-depth review, then 10/10 come here for brunch. Period. Browsed Yelp for new brunch spots we hadn't tried yet and were hoping to find a new place and stumbled upon 71 South. They have reservation options through Resy which is incredibly convenient. This place is so intentionally designed and well-executed. It is a former church that has been re-purposed as the restaurant it is now. Everything from the decor, the church bulletin-type menus, to the semi-pew seating leans into the former religious establishment that this place once was. We started out with the carafe + juice flight which featured house prosecco & a flight of orange, cranberry, blood orange, and pineapple juices. If you're looking for a variety in brunch drink variety, this is the choice for you! For food, we tasted a variety of options, and each one was exceptional! The sausage balls were savory and the gravy complemented them amazingly. The hot honey maple drizzle came on the side, and while we didn't eat much of it, it did taste quite nice. We ordered the crispy brussels and they were out of this world! Perfectly cooked, and the bacon that accompanied them was incredible! The goat cheese that was sprinkled on top was icing on the cake. The fried egg sandwich is definitely something worth trying for sure. We added the bacon and latke, and both were amazing additions to this sandwich. The bread was amazing and the flavors in this sandwich were delicious. The best item we ordered during this first of many visits was the avocado toast. The sourdough bread was beautifully toasted, the eggs were amazing, the sriracha was a brilliant addition, and the cottage cheese topped off this dish in an incredible way! Can't wait to order this again the next time we come back. Overall, this is our new brunch spot. They're a new spot, but they're a bunch of industry veterans that absolutely know what they're doing and it shows. Eat here. The food, the people, the place...10/10.

Yelp
I anticipated trying this new place out, and found it enjoyable. The church atmosphere is certainly unique. It's big, bright and spacious. I was a bit disappointed with our seating. There were numerous tables of two in the restaurant, yet we were seated right next to another couple, then another couple were seated right next to us. The tables are bit too close to begin with, so I'm not sure why we had to be "crammed." The menu has some unique offerings. I had the zucchini latke sandwich. It came with two latkes (one would have been plenty), cheese, bacon, spinach and tomato with a spicy sauce. I didn't think the cheese and bacon went well with the combo, but the sauce was a perfect addition. It came with thick housemate chips that was also a good compliment to the sandwich. I also had a local craft beer on draft. Service was very good. Our server was attentive and pleasant.

Yelp
I tried 3 things from the menu. All were quite good. Enough I have recommended the restaurant. It is a converted church, with several businesses taking over. The service was good. And it is a pleasant environment.

Yelp
Food is ok, but nothing that stands out. It's nice after a bike ride, convenience is our main reason for eating here. Service is ok, not super fast. Nothing to drive across town for.

Yelp
Found this gem tonight, I'm in town with my daughter who will be a senior at UT. I got the monthly special salmon croquettes with mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. The sides were amazing! If I ordered again I would request the lemon aioli on the side of the croquettes (it was too strong for my taste buds). My daughter got the Baker Creek salad and said it was the best healthy meal she has eaten in a while. Our server was super attentive. Loved the renovated church building and artwork. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The food here was amazing! Simple but elevated dishes that filled us up. Inside a beautifully renovated church. Service was great!

Yelp
We came opening day with our toddler. It's a great space. Parking could be an issue until construction is completed on the lower parking area. Drinks: I got the Paloma. Not a fan- similar to a Truly and didn't have the ingredient for the rim. Husband got the Appalachian cocktail- much better. I followed with chardonnay and it was fine. Food: Brussels appetizer 10/10. Brunch Hash- good, mixed with potatoes and sweet potato then served with a side of potatoes. I will likely ask for salad instead of side of potato next time. Husband got Nashville hot chicken sandwich. Average. House chips were yummy. Toddler: grilled cheese with soup. Good but grilled cheese cold (fine for a toddler) but soup is yummy. They were out of SEVERAL things (chili, Tajin for my Paloma, processo, and very low on bacon) so we couldn't get what we really wanted, the Frito Bowl and mimosa or my second choice is tacos. The owner came out and was VERY kind. I mentioned the cold grilled cheese but everything is has been preference. I look forward to trying again once kinks are worked out. I think it has all the ability to be amazing and I want to get my first picks!

Yelp
The space is absolutely beautiful and full of light, but my wife and I found the food uninspired and the service mediocre. I try to eat vegetarian but should have asked about the black bean burger before ordering. I suppose I assumed it would be homemade but it tasted just like a store-bought garden burger. My wife got the tofu bahn mi sandwich and it was just...again, uninspired. Same goes for the Brussels sprouts we shared as an appetizer.

Yelp
We had the BEST food, drinks, and service here! I was so impressed by the atmosphere, vibe, and hospitality. We were so happy that we decided to try somewhere new and check this place out. I highly recommend this restaurant. We will be back and plan to regularly visit!

Yelp
Everything was great! Friendly service and yummy food. Ordered burgers, a chicken sandwich, chicken fingers, fries, and brussel sprouts. Will definitely be coming back!
