10 Best Towns to Visit in Switzerland for Enchanting Castles, Majestic Mountain Views, and Gorgeous Alpine Lakes

"If you only ever go to one thermal bath in your life, be sure to make it Peter Zumthor’s Therme. The Swiss architect has created a sensational and sensory experience built from locally quarried quartzite slabs. It’s the perfect reward after a strenuous day of hiking or mountain biking to relax in these naturally occurring thermal springs." - Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel Lydia Mansel is a writer with more than eight years of experience editing and writing for both brands and online publications—with a particular focus on travel, fashion, and lifestyle. Me and my husband only came for a day in the spa. I don't know about other comments, but the ladies on reception were really polite and nice. Architecture and location are beautiful, so if you are coming because of that, go for it, these are the most beautiful spa we've ever visited. The outside pool is amazing. But if you are coming because of spa, for these price, there are better places to go. We had a good time, it was not crowded, so we were able to explore everything, but as people already mentioned, there were a lot of couples using the spa as their private rooms. Especially small niches with small pools. Sauna is unacceptable for that price, I'm not even sure what type of sauna that is. It is dividend in three rooms with different temperature, separated with curtains. The hottest part of three rooms with sauna is unbearable to be in, because the hot steam blows directly in your face if you are sitting on the stone. It was not just us, all people that came there, left the room immediately. All the pools are the same, except in the change of temperature. Theya are all just still water. The worst part is that you can't eat anything, because there is no restaurant or anything similar to buy food so we left after three hours because we were hungry.

The spa. And here comes the real adventure I honestly couldn’t figure out: Is this a designer spa, or a public city pool with good architecture? At the spa reception, the manager seemed concerned about exactly one thing: making sure no one brings in a phone. That’s where the service ended 🤣 As first-time visitors, no one asked if it was our first visit, no one explained the concept, no one showed us around. No introduction, no guidance, no sense of orientation. For a spa like this, that’s essential. ⸻ A note to the hotel manager and spa director (if such a role exists) I find it strange how strictly the “no phone” policy is enforced, while the spa itself often feels like a high-end architectural brothel. In every pool, couples openly making out, heavy public intimacy, very explicit physical interactions. Not particularly pleasant to watch, especially considering that the spa is open to external visitors, not only hotel guests. The aesthetics also suffer: – plastic bags – towels hanging over every railing – a general feeling of a municipal swimming pool I’m quite sure that if the original architect saw plastic Denner bags piled up on designer benches, mixed with thrown-together bathrobes, he would start bleeding from the eyes. You didn’t ask for advice, but it has to be said. You clearly need to find a competent spa manager. Someone who actually understands what spa philosophy means, and equally important, what service truly is. Please understand that service is not just pressed shirts, polite faces and enforcing rules at the entrance. Service is care. It is awareness. It is the ability to read the space, the guests, the atmosphere, and to protect the concept you are selling. Right now, the architecture is doing all the work, while the experience is left on autopilot. And a spa like this deserves much better.

Such a great experience. The water felt incredible on our hair and skin. There were so many different activities like sauna, cold plunge, various pools and spas. It was the perfect way to spend a day of relaxation.

4.2?? How is this true? My soul was reborn in the spa, particularly the elderflower bath. And the private alpine viewing rooms were spectacular. 10/10.

Everything is great - except the unfriendly reception, no food/drink rule for all day you spend (if you get out, you can't get in back, quite nonsense) and decreasing water temperature over the years. Not so sure if it is part of cost-cutting. Otherwise a magnificent place.

Yesterday we visited the thermal baths in Vals and unfortunately we had a very bad experience. I should mention that our group consists of four architects and that we came to Vals from Italy precisely to experience a day of rest and relax in such an important place for architecture lovers. In the afternoon, a very unpleasant situation occurred. One person in our group had to leave the spa for a few minutes due to an emergency. But the receptionist once talked to the manager informed us that we could not leave and re-enter even for an emergency of a few minutes. In order not to lose the day, the person in our group had to pay the expensive entrance fee again for 5 minutes of absence to re-enter the spa. It is unacceptable that in a place of this level there is such a lack of flexibility and attention to customer needs, which should be a fundamental part of an “alpine luxury” and relaxing experience. We were only treated as payers and not as customers to be taken care of.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary at this hotel, and our stay was absolutely wonderful. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by Martina, who went above and beyond to ensure our experience was perfect. Her kindness and professionalism truly made a difference. The hotel itself is stunning—luxurious with incredible attention to detail in its architecture and design. A true highlight of our stay was the thermal baths, which provided a unique and relaxing experience, making this hotel stand out even more. We truly enjoyed every moment and highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a memorable and high-quality stay.

Yelp
Review #2500. "I work a little bit like a sculptor. When I start, my first idea for a building is with the material. I believe architecture is about that. It's not about paper, it's not about forms. It's about space and material" said the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. In the case of Therme Vals his material was 60,000 slabs of local quartzite and his space a mountainside in the Swiss Alps. Built atop thermal springs, this incredible homage to water is one of the most breathtaking places I've seen up close. When architects are particularly obnoxious they speak of building the space, not the walls. It's no wonder they're drawn here -- now they can pontificate on another dimension: the water. How it feels. How it sounds. Even how it tastes. All kidding aside, I think the architects are onto something here. In the same way that light animates a space, water at Therme Vals is similarly abstracted. Its echo as it rushes through the quarzite walls; the way in which as you are in the water you are also in the mountains from which the water comes. The ride through the Alps from Zurich alone is worth the trip to Therme Vals, and when you arrive you will notice the place has a somewhat sacred feeling to it. As the Pritzker prize (architecture's Nobel) winner aptly put it, "Our spa is no fun fair." You will not find a menu of detoxifying lunch options, herbal tea or magical panpipe music here. In place of such frivolities you will be given the chance to luxuriate in a pure and unadulterated bathing experience. Whilst doing so you may gaze out upon cleverly framed views of the expansive Alps (a reminder of where it all comes from) or fall asleep in the sunshine on the stone outside. It is meditative even for those least able to quiet their minds. You can hop from the fire pool to the ice pool, swim in the outdoor pool and then relax in the flower pool (my favourite) before doing it all over again. Should you want a beverage in the baths you can drink from a brass cup attached to a chain beneath a rush of water; its ferrous taste as unique as the place itself. I spent but a few hours at Therme Vals though I often fantasise about returning to stay at the hotel (in one of the Zumthor-designed rooms) and partaking of the baths at night (only hotel guests are permitted in from 19:00-20:00) and in between hikes in the Alps for several days at a stretch.

Yelp
Bathing in thermal waters inside a national monument, the uncontested masterpiece of the famous architect Peter Zumthor, makes always a certain effect, especially if the environment is so far from your everyday surroundings. When you enter the narrow corridor, like a tunnel which leads to changing rooms, you seem to go in a mine through bowels of the earth. The spaces are very elegant and linear, walls are flatware of squares of quartzite, the local rock, which colour is pearled grey with clearer and darker nuances. It is soft and warm and if the sunlight touches it, it glitters particularly when the rays reach the water of the outdoor swimming pool. In the indoor spaces there is half-light everywhere: in the elegant cloakrooms, in the cabins of the massages, in the relax rooms, in the indoor swimming pools. Except sun beds in mahogany tree and doors of blue glass there are no decorative elements, such as e.g. vases of flowers or quite simply some colour spots. The impression which you receive is of a total immersion in another (if I dare to say, almost supernatural) dimension made of silence and relaxation.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE SO MUCH! This is the best thermal bath I have ever had in my life. I really want to come back here someday. This place is very clean and they have wide variety type of baths with different temperature ranging from steam bath (Turkish Bath) to sauna. The most important highlight that I like the most is the breathtaking views of Vals. It is very relaxing. Overall, I really enjoy this place with my group. Highly Recommended!!! No Regrets at All!
