Phoenix’s 10 Best Breweries | Eater Phoenix

"In the far West Valley, this tiny brewpub operates with a laser focus on one narrow theme: video games. Drinkers sip red IPA as they play retro Nintendos and arcade games. The focus extends to can art — charmingly minimal and pixelated — and even to beers. The White Mage (wheat beer) pulls flavor from white cocoa beans, while the Black Mage (stout) uses licorice and cacao nibs. The draft menu may be small, but this mom-and-pop spot is mighty and well worth the quest it takes to get there." - Chris Malloy

Google
Hello my fellow nerds! I’m in town and found this place. I didn’t get a chance to put on my robe and wizard hat but all your base are belong to us. The drinks were great and the company was even better. Talked with Joshua a bit and had a great time!

Kip Nettles

Google
Great little place. Lots of games. People here are nerds like me.

Damon Tighe

Google
The only bad thing about this brewery is that it’s not smack in the middle of a community where people can walk there every night. Novel and delicious beers by a brewer with creativity that is only curbed by making beers that actually taste good. He has physically put entire red velvet cakes into a brew, chocolate pudding with the best chub ever (?), and many more, but the beers only get tapped if they pass a stringent taste test. The atmosphere is novel; Nintendo eight bit themed, and fun with a whole host of regulars because the beer is that good. If you find yourself in the Phoenix metro. This is a Brewery worth making it out to.

Google
We love this place! We go literally every week to play games on their board game nights. There's a different game every month and they are constantly releasing new beers to taste. They also have classic NES and SNES games to play and a large selection of board games as well. The other week they had an event sponsored by Paramount Pictures and gave away a ton of stuff and advanced screening tickets to the new Dungeons and Dragons movie.

Google
If you want a spot to play games, enjoy a nostalgic setting and enjoy some craft beer - this place is definitely a hidden gem. The parking is ample, plenty of spots to choose from. The location is a bunch of office buildings that are rented out, so that throws you off a little bit. The setting was fun and there's a game for everyone. I also appreciated that the owner asked ADA service dog related questions!

Lori Stokes

Google
Best place in AZ to get a craft beer and the owners are true geek gems. Music is all 8 bit, atmosphere is fun, and the beer options have something for everyone. Take a way options available after you fall in love with one of their options. Go to 8 bit, you won’t be sorry.

Rane Wallin

Google
Love it here. It's a great place with great beer and a fun atmosphere. The flagship beers are all very good, and there's a continuous rotation of new and experimental beers to keep things interesting.

Google
Really cool concept for a brewery! Their beer was amazing, service was top notch too. My favorite is easily the Hopsassin's Creed Session IPA, but I did a sampler and their other beers were great as well. Definitely wish we lived closer so I could try them more often.

Yelp
This is a quaint smaller brewery tucked away in an industrial complex but don't let that fool you from the fact that this is a fun place to grab a beer or two, especially if you're a fan of 80s era video games. The environment is very laid back and some tables have old SNES systems you can play on, all while video game synthesized sounding music is playing through the sound system. Ryan the owner is very friendly and knowledgeable with recommendations. They didn't have much outside of IPAs on tap when we stopped in, but the White Mage wit ale had a unique taste which I enjoyed. Would recommend giving it a try if you're looking to check out a new brewery on the west side.
google avatar

Madison W.

Yelp
We love this taproom! The theme is present everywhere, in the space, the beer names, and of course the nerdy guests. Beer drinkers across the valley talk about 8-bit. The bartender was super chill and very nerdy himself. We'll be back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Ryan and his wife were a pleasure to meet yesterday. You can tell they really love what they do and it translates into their craft. As a fellow gamer myself, this place checks all the boxes of a gamer's brewery from the gaming systems at tables to the merch and beer themselves. I started with their curated flight of their flagship beers. Not only were they all great, but the flight holder itself is super cool and deserves to be recognized. I followed up with their Princess Peach IPA, and lastly their Final Ale-iversary IPA, both of which were really, really good. I brought a friend this time, and will continue to invite others from back home in LA to give em a try on their way into PHX. See you guys in a week when I return for the Dbacks-Dodgers series.

Yelp
Such a neat little place! I happened to be in the area and had been wanting to check it out. Service was fast and friendly. It's in a plaza so plenty of parking available. The beer was good, and we so enjoyed having a console at our table and being able to play some games. They have a QR code you can scan to see the extensive listing of all the games they have, and you can request whatever you want to play. It was a fun visit!
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
I love 8-bit, they gave such a fun take on their beers and what they offer. The place is small but they do have a lot of cool games around for everyone to play including the original Nintendo in 2 player mode which is so cool. Their food is limited so I do recommend eating before. The staff is great and nerdy in all the best ways, I'm a nerd myself so I love talking games, Pokémon, you name it.
google avatar

Shannon P.

Yelp
Awesome ambiance, great staff, and great drinks! If you clicked into this wondering if it is worth the stop-- yes! Play games and drink nerdy beer. What's better ? My only issue is that it isn't closer to where I live !
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
Truly great fun for this Yelp find! This joint is a bit out of the way, but worth it. The proprietor knows what he is doing because all the styles I tried were on point! If I'm in the area I'm coming back here, and I'll need to Uber because the Mayan Chocolossus was not a sessionable beer and crave worthy! They even had a panini maker for a brew snack..I had the cubano, and added the pickled hop shoots! Fab! Ambiance is industrial brewery, service was fab, and prices were great! This joint makes the list!
google avatar

Yelp
A scrappy up-and-comer, a game-themed taproom serving several types of beers. Flights available. Board games are free to borrow, along with standup arcade cabinets (that each had a broken stick or button when I tried). I enjoyed the drinks. I would prefer a darker vibe. The shop is well-lit and seems to welcome parents with young kids, which further creates a wholesome ambiance that doesn't speak to my inner scoundrel. Looking forward to a larger adult clientele that goes to be sociable.

Yelp
Wow, this is a super cool place for any child of the 80s. Owners are engaging and the beer is as good as any I've had from a microbrewery. Not local, but will be back while we're in town and revisit when we come back.

Matt T.

Yelp
An excellent place for nerds. A nice breakaway from the clichéd sports bar scene. Bartenders are awesome. Come and play a game and geek out with others.
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
So impressed with this place. Family ran, with the best employees you can possibly find. If you like retro games the vibe is strong here. The beer just as strong. lol! we tried pretty much all they have and I can't complain about any of them. My favorite was White Mage!! They were setting up for a Fundraising event right as we were leaving. These are awesome people you've gotta come check it out
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped by here while in town for Spring Training to grab a cold one. Being from SoCal we thought this might have been affiliated with the Temecula location but the owner mention they weren't, which is ok because they have they're own little vibe going. Nice small cozy tap room with a few retro Nintendo games you can try for free (just have to ask). In terms of the beer, they only had about 4-5 selections when we went but the ones we had were good. Nice husband and wife owned place.
google avatar

Shay B.

Yelp
Been here 3 times, the first 2 times I stopped by to pick up some beers to go. Last night I actually had a chance to sit at the bar and chill. Really good beers on tap, with very friendly bar service, and nostalgic video game vibes. I will be back when I stop by Phoenix area again.
google avatar

Yelp
The ambiance brings a nostalgic look and feel to your experience. The service is top notch and provided by the upmost souther hospitality from either the owners, or my boy Josh! You can order food from across the way, bring your own, or have an amazing panini that they provide. The video game "8-bit" music playlist of your favorite songs is my favorite! Amazing beer, and that's not just the perk!
google avatar

Nikki B.

Yelp
Was in the West Valley yesterday so I stopped in yesterday, just Ryan & myself for about 10 mins so I got to chat him up about the beers & brewery...friendly fellow. I gotta say... I am a total sucker for when breweries have a Theme & run w it!! Plus all the nintendo stuffs reminded me of my childhood. Anyways...review... Ryan was knowledgable & friendly! I liked the selection of beer and I liked the comfy, spacious digs!! Would definitely recommend stopping in if you have never been! Cheers

Yelp
My husband and I love this place! We had our first date here and we came back for our 1 yr anniversary and have made it a point to come here every anniversary. 8-bit is a part of our story and of course the beers are great! What's even better are the owners Ryan and Krystina! They are a very welcoming couple and create such a welcoming atmosphere. Although they probably never remember us, they make it feel similar to family. There's board games and video games to enjoy as well. After coming here for 2 years now, we will always return as long as the environment continues to feel the way it does now.

Yelp
8-Bit Aleworks is so freaking cute! I really love this place! It is a nice chill and fun place to hangout, drink some beers, and play some games. My husband and I came here when we were on a trip to Arizona and we are so happy that we were able to make time and come here. We both got a flight each so that we could try all of the beers. My husband is more of a IPA hoppy type of guy and I am more of an ale or hefe type of guy so there was enough variety for us to test. We really loved not only the beers, but we really loved the names of the beers too. So clever! Can't wait for the next time for us to come here! Definitely coming back here the next time we are in the area. The only criticism that I was say is that I wish they didn't have such harsh florescent lighting. Maybe if they put some softer mood lighting, it would be a little cooler.

Yelp
As a huge Nintendo nerd, this place stole my heart as well as my tastebuds with delicious beer! Highly recommend for a date night - if playing vintage video games and drinking beer are up your alley!
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
Always love coming here . Love the old school video game vibe. Come here whenever I get a chance
google avatar

Yelp
We planned a stop here because of the Witcher warmer and it was well worth it! We love stouts and this has got to be the best stout we've tried yet. It has chocolate, vanilla, and hazelnuts. Basically a Nutella stout. We also tried Sleepy Hollow's revenge (pumpkin ale) and Arroz of Icarus (horchata cream ale). Both were delicious but we did enjoy the pumpkin ale more. We'll definitely be back soon and we'll probably end up getting a growler of the Witcher warmer to enjoy for the season 2 premiere of the Witcher.

Yelp
Stopped by 8-bit for a quick drink.. it was pretty empty for a Thursday. But we like it like that! The place is small but super cool looking. A lil cold, but the games are cool! Josh was amazing and really made our time there great. He was knowledgeable and super friendly! We played Mario cart and had a beer flight! I love that they have different options on the size pours you can get. I will definitely be back! The pretzel was great. Wish they had a FEW more food items but it was great for what I needed. Great seasonal beers though, try them all!
google avatar

Sam P.

Yelp
This spot had great vibes! The atmosphere was really nice with a lot of video games. They even had a Nintendo console for those wanting to play. Beer was good as well.

Yelp
The ultimate place to retro-nerd out w/some brews! Loved the decor & vibe here because it will definitely give you nostalgia if u grew up on 8-bit consoles! They do a great job thematically here from the 3-D printed flt holders to old school Mario Bros perler props. You can request a cartridge from the barstaff to play any of the games listed (my fav is Dr. Mario) on any available console. They also have a beer loyalty club ($5 buy-in) where you can unlock diff perks. The membership card is pretty neat too! The beers themselves were just OK imho. The White & Black Mages were decent, but the IPA was a bit flat. I did enjoy the Cyril Figgis (Danger Zone! for u Archer fans) was probably my overall fav. They don't offer food, but have a "snack" Power Pack. A couple of the included items were expired by a month or so, but my friend didn't want to say anything because he felt it wasn't a big deal. I'm sure if we'd said something tho, they would have replaced or discounted the items since the barstaff (and owner) were super nice! If you're in the area ", definitely worth checking out, especially since the regulars are friendly as well!

Yelp
This place ROCKS!!! The gaming scene is my fave. I love the feel of this place. Ryan and Kristina are freaking rock stars that make this place wonderful. The service is on point. Family Owned has never been real. This husband and wife duo is AMAZING. If you are in the area swing by, you will not be disappointed.

Katie G.

Yelp
Fun little spot. Out of the way, awesome retro game vibes. While the selection is small, it's delicious beer! Some food options are available. Good place to get good service and play some old school Mario games.
google avatar

Matthew A.

Yelp
Awesome, unique atmosphere. Owners and staff obviously care about the the business, as well as the environment they are creating. Great beer, great events. Always recommend for anyone looking for a place to grab a beer and board or old school video games.
google avatar

Chelsey H.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this little hidden gem! Fun brewery that is decorated like your favorite childhood game, MARIO!!! The walls are blue with fun decals all over. They even have mini piranha plants on the tables and a mini mario. This is hidden in the back of an industrial complex. They don't sell any food, so eat before you come or bring it with you. They have tons of fun games out for you to play from consoles with vintage classics to a mecha of board games. We played never have I ever with a big group and had a blast! They offer a bunch of different beers I got Ichabod cranes nightmare which was an imperial pumpkin stout and it was pretty good. The showstopper for sure was the.beer flight that was in a 3d printed pipe. We had so much fun taking pictures and you get a ton of beer with that one. Overall great vibes to be had here for your inner child or your geeky self
google avatar

Kelsey E.

Yelp
8-bit regular because it's great! Lots of really solid beers and new varieties often. Can bring your own food in (no drinks), but they have limited snack options. Let's be real going to play games and for the beer!
google avatar

Alane O.

Yelp
This place Is a super cool concept, could use some help on the execution. So not like a traditional arcade bar where you stand and drop quarters into an arcade game Here you actually get to sit at a table and play old school gaming systems. Yeah just check 3 hours of your life at the door right. Good variety of games but not multiple games so if one person has what you want to play might as well choose a runner up because ain't no nexties. Complaint....food......there is none.
google avatar

Mr. M.

Yelp
Meh... bar in an industrial park? Couldn't spend the extra $100 per month rent and get like a real site? Like no food options. I guess people don't like to enjoy a little grub while they drink a beer or two. Apparently they think kids are ravenous wild animals and belong on a leash.... I dunno. Went there once and it seemed like a bunch of depressed locals. Too bad because the idea of this seemed amazing. Maybe they can get their feet off the ground one day. Best of luck. Again, could really take off if done right!

Yelp
For years, I'd wanted to check out 8-bit, hearing so many positive things from my Yelp Elite friends and westside buddies. I could never find the right time to make it work out though, as the only time I'd ever venture west of downtown was to take trips to California. Finally this past weekend I just said heck with it, I'm going to go on a hike and drive as far west from there as I need to to check out this brewery. And wow am I glad I did! I was greeted by the bartender Eric who was busy opening the place up (arrived shortly after noon). He was extremely friendly and shared his knowledge of the brewery's history, as well as the experience of 8-bit's owner and head brewer, Ryan. Being into video games since before grade school, I instantly felt at home with all the NES and SNES games/decor. I ordered a flight of their four flagship beers and also had a taste of the Princess (seasonal peach IPA). While all of them were great, the Princess definitely won the prize for me. I love how the flight is delivered in a green pipe like something straight out of a night of imbibing while playing Mario Bros.! In addition to the awesome beer, 8-bit's got the games! There are a few arcade games throughout the brewery, most notable being Donkey Kong Jr. in MINT CONDITION! If you are nostalgic for the days of NES or SNES racing Bowser in Mario Kart or stomping on crocodiles in Donkey Kong Country after school, they have have consoles set up at tables around the brewery with a wide variety of game cartridges for your enjoyment. Stop in for a brew or two and some gaming fun! I will definitely be back when their smores beer is on tap...heck who am I kidding I'll probably be back sooner!
google avatar

Angel O.

Yelp
Fun themed brewery to stop into and try interesting beers. A few arcade games and Nintendo available to play at tables.
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
Chill environment with good beer and some retro games. Can't complain! You can bring outside food and play some Sonic or browse their games they have at the bar. Service is great and the staff are friendly! Definitely suggest the White Mage.
google avatar

Hector B.

Yelp
Full disclosure..... LOVED THE BEER. See my ratings on untapped under Toryvalben.i tried all they had on tap and left with cans to go! They're wasn't one beer that I didn't think nailed it. I was very impressed. Service was wonderful but the beers.....

Yelp
Went last night to check out this spot and geeked out so hard that my homie had to Phoenix Down me. Their beer selection is a little small, but what they do serve is fantastic. We tried a flight of the regulars, then had a taster of each of their seasonals, so we explored the entirety of their offerings. I can't tell you which one was my favorite, because that'd be like trying to pick a favorite Souls game (they're all different and amazing in their own way [even #2 {which is actually my favorite}]). The White and Black Mage were great for what they are- I'm not a huge Wit or Stout fan, but these were thoroughly enjoyable. The Assassin's Creed IPA and Legend of Zymer DIPA were both really nice, the latter having a citrusy head that smelled like amazing body wash. Now, the seasonals are what really stood out. The Princess Peach was pure bliss, and I think it was 9-10% so it packed a wallop. The bread pudding one (I don't remember the name, but it tastes like spiced bread pudding) came home with me in a single growler. The gose... oh, that gose. Slightly salty with a hint of sweetness, like a swig of estus after one's first victory over the Capra Demon. You know what I thought was *REALLY* amazing??!?! NO HAZY IPAS! Right now 'tHe SCenE' is flooded with hazy IPAs and IT'S JUST TOO MUCH PEOPLE STAHP IT ALREADY JEEBUS! But here, there wasn't a single one. Though I'm sure that if they DID make one it'd be fantastic, I was very happy to see that they didn't have any on tap. Apparently the owner is kinda over them as well, so I know that I have a kindred soul out here in the west valley!!!

Yelp
I like coming here with boyfriend. This place is more for him. Since he was the one who introduced me here. It's a bar owned by a husband and wife. They are super nice and welcoming.
google avatar

Lloyd G.

Yelp
Great place. Bringd back memories of my childhood. Wish they had more on tap but worth the visit

Penny L.

Yelp
This is Avondale's best kept secret. A great place to meet up friends and play some board games. They have a rotating tap of beers to choose from. The staff are very funny and seem to love what they do. I can not wait to go back.
google avatar

Kirah R.

Yelp
So cute here ! Sitting here now enjoying fine beers and great paninis ! Lovely staff and just a great place to be! I am so happy we saw this place on yelp and gave it a try! We are regulars now!

Yelp
My buddy is an avid beer drinker, and he wanted to hit up a new brewery. We were in the area so we decided to stop in here. This place is located on the back side of an industrial area, not too far off the 10. Setup is pretty cool with art of video games all over the walls. They have a few Nintendo systems set up around the bar, as well as 2 full sized arcade games that take quarters. We played some Donkey Kong Jr. About that...hard freaking game...don't remember it being that difficult when I was a kid, lol! My buddy ordered a flight of beers and a pint. I was driving, so I did not partake, but my buddy said that the beers were kind of whack. Not in the sense that he hated them, but in the sense that he wouldn't come back here just for the beers. To chill, maybe....play video games, maybe...but specifically for the beer, nope! (I trust his judgement, too.) If you like beer and old school Nintendo, this may be worth a stop. Service was friendly and prices were decent, I guess. I don't think I will be returning though.

Yelp
This is one of the best breweries in the entire state of Arizona. Easily top five. Yes, they have a video game theme and they name their beers after video game characters and they have games you can play at the taproom and etc, etc. But the reason to come here, more than anything else is the quality of their beers. I won't drink just any ol' swill because they have a fun name that appeals to my inner nerd senses. Like, I won't rave about a beer just 'cause it's called "Super Miller Lite Bros." Or "The Legend of Zima." Or "Sonic The HedgeCoors." Or "Popovkemon Go." No, the reason to come to this brewery is the fact that they make high quality, delicious beers and the fact that they come up with the craziest infusions to surprise your taste buds when you least expect it. 8-Bit Aleworks has a weekly "hacked" beer. They take a flagship beer of theirs and they infuse it with all kinds of awesome stuff like rare hops, coffee, spices cereal, fruit, fruit cereal and any other thing your nerd heart could desire. I have some friends who are traditionalists when it comes to beer. They think it shouldn't have all this added stuff because, in their opinion, that isn't "real beer." If I brought those friends to 8-Bit Aleworks they'd have a legit heart attack. But hey, it's their loss. As far as I'm concerned, you can add whatever you want to a beer as long as it tastes good. And the brewer for 8-Bit sure does know what tastes good. Be adventurous with your drinking. Because there's nothing more boring than sobriety.

Maria R.

Yelp
Very good,I don't normally drink beer but enjoy drinking it here, even better when accompanied with Taco Hog carnitas... parked outside every so often...
google avatar

Yelp
The video game tie-ins are just overdone. Really fun for the first 20 minutes, and just tiring after that. Beer is perfectly OK. Crowd was less friendly than I have encountered in similar establishments. Location is in an Industrial park, which is typical for small breweries. Bartender was very knowledgeable on the beers and the brewing process.
google avatar

Jason F.

Yelp
I stopped by here earlier today with my wife and her parents for some afternoon drinks. 8 bit Ale works is located in a random business park and doesn't have a large sign so it may be difficult to find. Once you do find it though, you will be glad you did. The inside of this place consists of a large bar surrounded by tables with 8 bit video themed games stuff on all of the walls. 3 of the tables have video game consoles, 2 NES and a 1 Super NES. You can play the game that is in the console or you can look at the list of games on the bar and exchange your game for another. Whenever we got there we choose the console with super Mario bros and also went through RC Pro AM and Super Mario Bros. 3. I digress though as what brought me here was the beer. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery I went with their sampler which for $7.50 included their 4 flagship beers. It had the white mage (wit), black mage (stout), hopsassins creed (session IPA) and Legend of Zymur (double IPA). Then I also tried to get a 4 oz. addition of a Press Start (honey brown) but the bartender and I got our wires crossed and I ended up with a pint. So we shall call it a happy accident as I didn't mind drinking it. Honestly I was having such a blast playing the video games with my wife that I didn't register the beers as much as I normally did. All of them did taste how you would think that their styles would with my favorites unsurprisingly being the Double IPA and session IPA. The bottom line for me is that I would come back here again in the future. As a matter of a fact I mentioned to my wife that if we lived in the area I would come back at least monthly. The beer here was good and I loved that this was a great combination of things I loved in my childhood (video games) and now in adulthood (beer).

Yelp
I met the proprietors at Phoenix Comicon 2014, and I have followed along via Facebook as they prepared to open up shop. It was fantastic to attend their "alpha" grand opening to thank early supporters. I met my husband over 15 years ago because of our mutual love of Final Fantasy. We fit in at 8-Bit Brewery. My husband loves his craft beers, and he enjoyed all of 8-Bit's initial offerings--he even had the distinction of having his orders blow their first two kegs! The wall art depicts classic gaming scenes, and the background music streams familiar soundtracks in 8-bit renditions. Quite appropriate! They don't serve food, but that night the Frites Street food truck dropped by. They plan to have more food trucks visit. These are genuinely nice folks who have created a phenomenally good product. We'll continue to follow along and support their business.

Yelp
I can't get enough of this place! The decor, the atmosphere and the beers *chef's kiss* Ryan is incredibly knowledgeable about brewing, ingredients and of course video games. This place is great. If you haven't tried it yet, what are you waiting for?
google avatar

Roddy G.

Yelp
I was intrigued by the whole theme with 8-bit and decided it was worth the Uber. Had a good time chatting with the folks at the bar, bar tender was awesome, and the beers were really good. Solid night there. Only negative is the whole strip mall looks dark like it's closed but 8-bit is OPEN! Go check it out.

Zoey C.

Yelp
service and ambiance is amazing. The owners are super nice and I love trying the new beers and playing the board games and video games there.
google avatar

Yelp
Great beer. Video games. Friendly, welcoming ownership. What more could you ask for. If I lived closer this would be a regular spot. If you can't find it at first, don't worry it just takes a bit of searching but it is in the commercial park!
