All Signs Point to 85º Celsius Opening in Washington Square Mall | Eater Portland

"I watched massive crowds flock to the Washington Square Mall when the Taiwanese 85°C Bakery Cafe opened its first Oregon location in November, drawing huge lines even during a so-called “soft opening.” An obscenely popular international chain often labeled the “Starbucks of Taiwan,” it’s known for breads, cakes, and pastries — from choco buns, mango breads, and egg tarts to taro danishes and the Mangotale (a mango-and-cream-cheese bun). The cafes also serve coffee, tea drinks, and smoothies, including “sea salt drinks” (teas or coffees topped with a salted cream foam). The mall had advertised the arrival as early as April, Portland Food & Drinks first spotted the opening, and openings in Seattle’s International District, Tukwila, and Lynnwood have drawn similar long lines; the grand opening was expected to create even more buzz, and an update on Dec. 3, 2019 confirmed the shop had opened." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
That taro cake was great! I loved how the US is trying out cool flavors like mango and taro. I hope I can find black sesame or chestnut cakes at a bakery one day. The cake looked so pretty. The taste was perfect. We should totally go back and try out other cakes in the future.

Google
I’m glad they opened this bakery in Oregon! Only I visited there once When I went to Seattle area. Finally I saw them! Boba tea, breads, cookies, pastries and cakes are great! Crews are kind and friendly.

Google
My wife and I decided to take a peek inside and we were pleased! I got an iced Salted Caramel Coffee, and she got the Iced Strawberry Matcha and a Macciato Cream Cake. The cake was out of this world at the price! Our drinks were also out of this world, ill.be back!!

Google
This place is perfect for a cheap & good snack I personally love the jalapeño cream cheese bread. I have also tried the mango custard bun & it is not a personal favorite. I wish that the rewards system was easier to use though but I know that’s not the fault of this specific place. Out of all the places to get something to eat at this is my favorite!!

Matt O

Google
Holy in a mall with a cheesecake factory this place still serves the best desserts. The prices are insanely fair at around 1.50 to 4 per pastry and the pastries taste amazing. I got the hikkido roll, red bean bun, ube bread, and the Swiss rolls all of them were fantastic cant go wrong here everything is great

85°C Bakery Café – A Dessert Lover’s Paradise at Washington Square Mall Every visit to Washington Square Mall is incomplete without a stop at 85°C Bakery Café. This delightful bakery has become the highlight of my trips, consistently drawing me in with its irresistible offerings. From the moment you approach, the enticing aroma of freshly baked goods envelops you, making it nearly impossible to resist stepping inside. The bakery is perpetually bustling, often with lines extending out the door—a testament to its well-deserved popularity. Yet, the efficient and friendly staff ensure that the wait is always worthwhile. Upon entering, you’re greeted by a visual feast: an array of over 50 varieties of pastries baked fresh hourly, each more tempting than the last. The selection is so vast that it’s akin to being a child in a candy store, with choices ranging from savory to sweet, and everything in between. The refrigerated section showcases beautifully crafted cakes and desserts, each piece a work of art that’s almost too beautiful to eat. Some standout items include the Tiramisu Cheesecake, a creamy Basque cheesecake topped with tiramisu mousse and cocoa powder, and the Lemon Egg Tart, featuring a flaky golden crust filled with rich custard, topped with buttercream icing and zesty lemon custard. Each pastry is not only delicious but also visually stunning, making the selection process both a joy and a challenge. The packaging is equally impressive, with each item carefully boxed, ensuring that your treats arrive home in perfect condition. This attention to detail enhances the overall experience, adding a touch of elegance to every purchase. Given the indulgent nature of these delectable desserts, I find it essential to balance my visits with a stroll around the mall, both to enjoy some window shopping and to justify the extra calories. But truth be told, every bite is worth it. The combination of flavors, textures, and the sheer variety ensures that there’s always something new to try, making each visit as exciting as the last. In conclusion, 85°C Bakery Café is more than just a bakery; it’s a destination that promises a sensory delight, leaving you eagerly anticipating your next visit.

Google
I absolutely love this place, it's one of the best bakeries in Oregon! The egg tart was crispy and full of flavor, and they even had taro flavored pastries which I don't see often. I really love their white chocolate bread, I definitely recommend it. This place was recommended by my cousin, and I'm thinking about going again. The place was clean and the staff were kind!

Cynthia S.

Google
I'm so happy this location exists! I used to only get 85° whenever we visited Seattle. Their egg tarts are the best! If I could suggest anything, I would suggest bringing back the mangonada! Now if you could just open up a location near Vancouver, that would be amazing. 🫶

Yelp
Service: The smaller pastries displayed are self serve. You can order cakes, drinks and other snacks once you get to the counter. Nice, friendly and relatively speedy. Pastries: The main reason I go. Wide selection of options of buns, egg tarts, milk bread, etc for you to hand pick and choose from. Fresh and yummy for for breakfast or snack. Cakes: 8" round cakes for $40 is a bit steep, however they do taste good. Overall fluffy but a tad sweet for my taste. Their single slices are okay but for $6-8 per slice is again also steep for what it is. If you have to buy a cake from here, I would rather get the full round cake than the slices. Drinks: Okay, does the job. however there are better options available within the area. Overall, I think this place is a great bakery for their pastries. appropriately priced with a wide selection and made fresh everyday. More often than not, I will always recommend this spot when coming here.

Yelp
I love the breads. Everything else feels like mass manufacturing, because it really is. This is a world wide chain. I like their prepackaged teas, but it's gotten pricey for something that is premade somewhere else. The cakes are cute. But not made with natural ingredients. The creams don't melt and keeps its same exact texture and shape if left out for days.

Yelp
This a high quality bakery in Washington Square mall. I came on a Friday around 1pm and none of the pastries were sold out so there was a great selection of pastries and breads to choose from. Everything is clearly labeled on the signs and individually packaged, which I appreciated. The line can be pretty long, but it moves fast. The standout pastry to get here are the egg tarts. They are not too sweet, perfectly creamy, and have a buttery crust. I tried the mochi egg tarts for the first time and they were great, but not anything too different in texture from the original. I also got some filled pastries that all had a hefty amount of the filing and tasted amazing.

Yelp
The service was great, I felt comfortable in this bakery. I also enjoyed the pastries that they had! This is a great place to go when you're with friends or family!

Yelp
There's always a long line when I come in, but they are fast. If you are looking for some goodies, this is the place to go. I always enjoy their cakes and pastries, it's very light in sweetness. Inside is not a place you go for a date since it's very loud when busy and the line runs past the tables.
google avatar

Gene W.

Yelp
It's hard to justify paying over $40 for an 8" cake but this bakery makes a legitimate argument. Besides being a great looking cake, the ube taste was present. As with most Asian-style baked goods, the cake & frosting was light and not too sweet. Other sort of exotic flavors were also available but at this price point, bakery from here is definitely only for special occasions.
google avatar

Adriana Z.

Yelp
Love a good Pastry? Grab a tray and you get to select your favorite pastry, Asian essence pastry, Soft, airy, fluffy. Busy location, might have a little wait line, always a busy spot!
google avatar

Yelp
An international Taiwanese chain bakery / cafe, this was my first time visiting the Portland location. For the milk breads, sweet and savory pastries, muffins, and cookies, it's self serve. I really appreciate that each item has a card clearly indicating the name, calories, ingredients and price. At the counter, there is a display case with gorgeous rainbow sherbert colored cake slices and specialty desserts. While I didn't try any of those, they certainly looked beautiful and I would come back to pick up an assortment for a dinner party. I opted for a savory hotdog pastry because I needed protein not was good, hit the spot for an afternoon snack. In addition to the baked goods, they sell a variety of coffee and tea drinks, smoothies and fruit juices. Several tables to sit at, cafe style.

Yelp
I missed this place for a similar style bakery at the Clackamas mall. I will say that the products were good, but I was a little disappointed. They didn't have the items I was hoping for that. I got when I frequent There. Place was very clean things in the case were fresh. I didn't get anything prepackaged outside the case because really truly I wonder how they could be so fresh with just how much volume they have there. Don't take my word on that honestly, I have no idea if they do bake and package all of those fresh each day. Like most of these Asian bakeries, I like a fruit, moose or fruit cream based item and the cake you did not disappoint not a bad price not a great price, but it was a great product

Yelp
I love this place for its convenience and yummy treats; however, I haven't stopped by in awhile and I would have to rate today's experience a 3/5. Upon entering, the white trays at the entrance were all dirty, with food crumbs all over them (usually they're relatively clean). Additionally, when I went to purchase my items, it took some time for the cashier to acknowledge me, even though I was the only person in line. On a more positive note, I loved that there was still a wide selection of pastries and desserts on the shelves. I will likely be back in the future because I love their food items, but am hoping for improvements in cleanliness and service.

Yelp
I came here on the weekend and got their grapefruit green tea. I ordered at their drink kiosk rather than waiting in line since I wasn't buying any pastries. However, the kiosk didn't give me a physical receipt for my order... so I just memorized the number. It was so busy, and everyone else around me had a physical receipt...my order number eventually came but the staff didn't believe me, but I had the number written down, had also purchase history to show. Eventually got my drink, I wish the kiosk provided a physical receipt. The grapefruit drink was fine, nice and refreshing. I remember at other 85 locations many years ago they used to put in a whole grapefruit.

Yelp
I got my birthday deal which was 50% off any drinks. I got oolong milk tea, 30% sweet and regular ice. In the end, I just paid $2 for it (wish it was free like other places but I'm still thankful for discount). I thought the portion was good and the oolong flavor was nice. The drink had a good tea flavor and it was not too sweet. I think I like this one over the original milk tea.

Yelp
I wanted to do an update from my last review over. Year ago they have improved their selections at this location and happy to report I do come here every week to get my fix !
google avatar

Brianna H.

Yelp
I didn't get a chance to go in, but my roommate brought some back for me and I will definitely be going soon! The pastry was incredible and melted in your mouth! I cant wait to try everything else!

Yelp
An absolute must when going to Washington square mall everyone in my family loves 85 bakery. You can't really go wrong with anything they have the cakes, sweets, pastries & drinks are all very good and taste like good quality ingredients. My favorites are the cheese bread it's a hit & the little mango cakes. They definitely sell out fast on the weekend but the lines are fast & definitely worth it!
google avatar

Diana B.

Yelp
The buns here are so amazing, and not too overly sweet! I come by here at least once a month, and always end up spending well over $50 just because I make sure to grab all my favorite buns for me, my family, and my friends! Big hit with everyone I've shown this place to!
google avatar

Dan I.

Yelp
The service and ambiance is not the problem for this review so I'm not really focusing on that. The bread is good but they really made it smaller it's like 50% less than a year ago. And it's also more expensive so wow.
google avatar

Lisa E.

Yelp
Had the red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. Excellent! It was beautifully decorated and tasted amazing (moist, not overly sweet, nicely put together). Everyone loved it! Would definitely purchase a cake here again! Will have to try some other items here soon!
google avatar

Shanti Kiran N.

Yelp
Seriously epic bakery! Their cakes are amazing! I've ordered birthday cakes from them and have never been disappointed! We've tried their strawberry as well as their Black Forest cakes. Both were well received and delicious and were eaten rather quickly! I wish this place didn't exist inside the mall but it's still really delicious cake - so I'm not complaining here! It's really nice to have a dependable bakery where you will always get good value for money.
google avatar

Yelp
85 degree bakery is a must get whenever I'm at Washington square, and you can't miss it once you're inside the mall! The big window displaying all the goods and the smell will lure you right in. I came 10 mins after opening and everything was warm and fresh off the oven. I enjoyed picking through a variety of both savory and sweet bakery goods and my drinks were amazing especially the jasmine, you can smell and taste the tea as you're sipping it and they've perfected their sea salt cream which makes the drinks 10x better. Overall 85 bakery is my friends and family favorites!
google avatar

Mason M.

Yelp
Bakery was so good had amazing sweet treats that day and the next day it's fun picking out all your items and etc. People working were nice and respectful.
google avatar

Lawrence H.

Yelp
A variety of goodies that everyone can choose from, share, and enjoy. Something for all palettes! Friendly and a relaxing area to enjoy some sweets and more! Especially after shopping a bit too much.

Shade N.

Yelp
Well, they can't seem to fill the custard buns with custard. I can't buy them anymore. Not enough savory options or consistency.

Bob H.

Yelp
Good service, good coffee and pastries. They were very busy when we were there but they were courteous and quick with service.
google avatar

Ben K.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in the mall! Love the grab-and-go cafeteria format and the wide variety of treats. I've tried a few things from here and have not been disappointed. Definitely recommend trying this place out!
google avatar

Bennette I.

Yelp
My daughter was celebrating her birthday and she choose Korean bbq for dinner so I wanted an Asian sweet treat for after. I picked up four individual desserts at Washington square 85 degrees location. It's always bustling in there! I got the mango delight, strawberry cake, opera cake and blueberry cheesecake. Her favorites were the cheesecake, strawberry and mango in that order. No one loved the Opera cake a little too much coffee flavor so for non-coffee drinkers, its was a little of a disappointment. However, someone who loves coffee would most like enjoy it. They are beautiful and show really well on a dessert platter.

Yelp
Omg, this place has thee best pastries. They have breads, pastries, muffins, cakes you name it. After a delicious dinner of savory we needed something to cleanse our taste buds. Yes, pastries!! And you can't just pick one, you will be tempted to pick many for home. When you walk in you will find cabinets full of savory and sweet pastries. The pastries will surprise you, because they're not sugary sweet, but a perfect balance of sweetness and are very moist. Find your tray and walk around to select your favorites. Believe me it will be difficult. The prices will vary, but reasonable to your pocket. They also have a nice cafe on the other side, for your convenience to sit and enjoy a beverage. Customer service is quick and thorough, hand them your tray selection and they quickly check you out. Nicely decorated and a clean establishment. I obviously bought enough for me to extend my experience. Yes, I was tempted !! Go check out 85*C Bakery and Cafe in Washington Square. Sure wish they had one at Cascade Station or Waterfront Vancouver. Please

Smaly K.

Yelp
Their pastries have always been tasty. Haven't had any in a while, so decided to grab something on my way home from shopping. I got one of my favorite that I haven't had in a while: the Chocolate Chip Bowl, but it didn't seem to be extra tasty like I remember it to be. I also got two new items that I haven't tried before: the Apple Danish and the Cinnamon Roll were decent.
google avatar

Shelley W.

Yelp
Originally had this in Seattle and was so happy when they announced the opening of this location. They have a wide range of options for both savory and sweet, as well as drinks and cakes. Conveniently located inside the Washington Square mall there are some tables inside if you want to stay and eat there.
google avatar

KC K.

Yelp
What happened to their customer service? My daughter and I always liked this place. I think their food is always tasty and price is great compared to their competitors. However, when we stopped by today, there was no customer service! I had to wait at cashier more than 5 min when there was no customers waiting other than us. A few clerks looked at me but didn't say or do anything. Why???? Plus I noticed no labels on many breads too. We knew what we wanted so that's fine but I don't think new customers will know.

K N.

Yelp
Do NOT order a drink through the app here. I waited at the pick up window, 15 minutes pass, no drink yet. Another person who was also waiting asked the guy making drinks (shoulder length hair, I think a co-worker called him Ryan) if his drink was ready. No response. So me and this guy keep waiting and when Ryan? brings more drinks to be picked up, I ask him if he even received my order yet. Eyes down, turns away quickly and completely ignores me. They look really understaffed here so I don't blame them for slow service. But you can't even tell me if you received my order? Just going to completely ignore us?
google avatar

Al D.

Yelp
I love this place and i live nearby so i go pretty often. I went today to pick up an order I made on the app which I had never done before. I waited a while at the window and I couldn't tell where I was in line so i tried asking an employee through the window. The employee (some kid with glasses and blonde locs) was SO RUDE. It was a busy day, so I can understand that they may have been overwhelmed. But they were so rude and monotone for no reason, made me feel dumb for asking a question; then proceeded to slam my drink on the counter and walk away immediately. I never write reviews, but I felt the need to this time because it made me feel so uncomfortable. And I love going to 85, but interactions like that make me want to avoid it.
google avatar

Kimmy H.

Yelp
This place is located in the mall and offers an array of Korean pastries for a great value. The buns are about $2-3 each and will hit the spot. I got about 5 buns and liked the pork floss bun in particular as it was a nice savory sweet. The milk tea bun was also pretty tasty and I was surprised that it actually tasted like it. The cakes on display also looked delicious, but I didn't buy any. My only complaint is that I wish they used a different kind of packaging or taped the pastries in the bags closed as customers would touch the items then put it back and it's now exposed.
google avatar

Breanna V.

Yelp
I have loved everything I got here!!! I got my sisters birthday cake from here and it was delicious! She was so happy with it! Light and not too sweet. SO glad they had red velvet
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Every time I go to Washington Square, I end up going to this bakery! It's very Covid-19 friendly in that their pastries and bread are all individually wrapped. Obviously not environmentally friendly, but I appreciate the cleanliness of the store. It's a long and deep bakery with cases of either side. Not confusing at all if you've never been to these kind of Asian-French bakeries. Here are some treats I got this day I went: white chocolate strawberry bun, guava strudel, milk pudding bun, and egg tarts!
google avatar

Nanny N.

Yelp
I really like this place. They have a big selection of things for all types of food tastes. I always leave with a big tray of food.

YingYing H.

Yelp
There is a hair in the bread I eat.I saw a black hair in the middle of eating. This may be a mistake. But it made me disappointed in you. This affected my interest in bread.
google avatar

Deborah K.

Yelp
Asked for napkins and was told by the supervisor JULIAN that they are out of napkins until tomorrow. Was handed napkins in this manner (pictured below). When I looked at the napkins, both JULIAN and a female worker next to him writing on stickers looked at me with the facial expression as though I'm asking for too much. It is hard to believe that a bakery is out of essentials. Instead, the workers appear extremely lazy and uninterested in helping customers. DIRTY 85 location. Would highly suggest different management or an audit nonetheless.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
I love the pastries and the cakes here. They're all so beautifully presented, fresh, and delicious. They have a large variety of sweet and savory, from individually packed bread, toasts, desserts, and smaller rolls. Their taro swirl is a must-try! It has a lot of filling and is decently priced. I haven't tried the drinks but would be interested in trying them. They seem quite understaffed as the shelves are not always stocked and the store is almost always filled with customers. However, I've never had an issue with customer service here. The staff are friendly.
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
A wonderful selection of baked goods being resupplied with fresh and warm constantly. The prices are good and the goods are not too sweet.
google avatar

Huy Y.

Yelp
If you want high quality bread ranging from ($2 to $3) this is the place to go. I typically come here for lunch and it would cost between ($6 to $7) and I can choose three types of breads. I did come in today hoping to try out their bubble tea but they ran out and I was informed that it would take 2 hours for it to come out. I would think that since they've been here for two years they would have the pattern or consistency but maybe not. But I did order their Vietnamese coffee and it was what I expected. Since it was very sweet I let the ice melt a bit for a perfect flavor. I would say that their pastry consistency is very good and will most likely stay good for 2 to 3 days. The milk bread is something I always go for.

Yelp
So I know this is a chain bakery, but I have to give props to the Asian fusion bakery that has my heart. Over the past couple of months my husband and I have used this as a treat every Friday to celebrate the end to another week. Whether it is a good day or a bad day, we come here for a little pick me up. My favorite thing is that most bakeries strictly have sweet items, but this one has a few savory treats with a sweet twist. Here is what we've tried: 1. Taro Swirl: I love the taro filling. the custard is delicious and with a bit of warming; it is ooey gooey! 2. Sweet Cream: this has a sweet cream cheese filling and it is to die for!!! 3. Mango Custard Bun: this is a great mango custard. sometimes it has very little custard and throws off the bread and custard ratio, but i still love it! 4. Jumbo Guava Cheese: GUAVA LOVERS!!! yes please. this pastry reminds me of an apple pie from McDonalds with better flavor. 5. Bordah Dan: this is a similar bread. this isn't really filled but a good sweet bread 6. Marble Taro: similar to Taro Swirl, but no filling. Just bread. Light taro taste, with a hint of sweetness 7. Egg Tarts: if you time it right and these come straight from the back-heated it is GOLDEN! hour. Its like the Krispy Kreme hot sign on! 8. Cheese Bites: these are generally in the fridge section. To most people it would be a savory treat, but these taste like mini cheesecakes minus the crust! ITS PHENOMENAL! 9. Pineapple Cake: These are pre packaged up near the line. They are very dense and you either love em or you hate em! 10. Lemon Cookies: These cookies are madeline's! They are delicious with a very slight lemon taste! It has a lemon hard shell very thinny on! 11. Salted Butter Bread: This is a sweet bun with sweet cream cheese! Yes please Savory Treats: 1. Elote Bun: MUST GET! This is my husbands go to pastry for savory. He never strays unless its not there. its a bit messy, but so delicious. 2. Sausage Roll: they do this as a normal or spicy! the spicy has no difference to me, but its a great hearty snack! 3. Jalapeño Cream Cheese: this is my favorite savory treat. Especially if it comes out warm! It is delicious. The only note: On one too many occasions I get the stem of the jalapeño and its not very enjoyable! But this flavor is spot on! 4. Mushroom on Whole Wheat: I love mushrooms and this is a delicious treat. You can't really taste the whole wheat dough! 5. Hawaiian Chicken: This reminds me of a BBQ chicken with PINEAPPLE. It is a great combo for those who like pineapple on pizza! 6. Garlic French: Yes please. There are two variations to garlic bread, but this one is a bit more sweet. 7. Ham and Cheese: The cheese crust is great. I love it! Its a bit more sweeter than a traditional ham and cheese, but yes get it!! Overall this bakery never disappoints. My husband try to choose new ones. sometimes they are out of our favorites, and we have tried more than these, but these were the memorable ones :)

Yelp
My weakness! I'm like a kid in the candy store in places like this. So many or should I say too many options. I'll say, definitely go earlier in the day, but not when they first open. I've gone when they first opened & they were still bringing items out. So we shopped around for a bit, came back & everything was out. I've also come closer to closing, where shelves were understandably pretty empty. I haven't tried anything I didn't like, but I have my favorites. Favorite sweet pastry is the milk tea bun. Although this last time I got it, I didn't see any boba inside. Favorite savory is hands down the spicy sausage. I like to try different ones, but this is one I always make sure to get at least 2 of. Can't beat the soft buttery pastries. So yummy everytime.

Yelp
This is a bakery I fell in love with in Los Angeles. The baked goods are all individually wrapped so there's no concern about touching and not buying. Everything I've tasted here this far is absolutely amazing. You grab what you want on a tray and get in line to checkout. There's always a line to but well worth it. They have electrical plug-ins at most tables. They could use a little background music if there's anything to suggest. Best baked goods around!!

Yelp
Mochi Egg Tart ~ big box packaging, tiny tart inside. A itty bitty filling of mochi, do not taste the egg, too much packaging waste for what you get. You try some and you lose some.
google avatar

Ana R.

Yelp
All the pastries are good here, but my favorite has to be the Spinach Kale Danish for savory and for sweet, Egg tart. I also love their iced teas. Service is sweet and fast.
google avatar

Arhemi P.

Yelp
The absolute best pastries i've had in a while super fresh , The drinks are so good as well although i wish they had bigger servings for them. The prices are great! , The employees are also amazing and patient no matter how busy it gets! Wish they'd make the seating a little better but with such little space it's understandable. Everything else is 10/10
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
I did go back again... Many pastries were very gooey, undercooked, and we threw them out. QC has gone down. I'm sad to say it's not a fave anymore. Other locations, in my experience, are/were consistent, and better, than this one.
